fic rec friday
“That’s not fair.” Sirius was crying now, and Remus swiped his tears away with his thumb. “This isn’t fair. We haven’t had enough time. It’s not fair.”
“I know, love.” Remus leaned in for a kiss, and wondered if it would be the last. “I have loved you for sixty-two years, and it’s nowhere near enough.”
Or
Sirius loses his memories.
this is an angsty one folks!
so, i know that i usually recommend more fluffy works, i do, however, love this fic so very much and it's basically what it says in the summary
if you are in a place where you can do with an angsty fic right now i would highly rec this bitter sweet little story
as always, leave lots of love and kudos to the author and have an amazing rest of the week <3

The Shoebox Project by dorkorific & ladyjaida in Audio and Video by greeniron
@hprecfest day 3 prompt: a podfic
Relationships: Sirius Black/Remus Lupin, James Potter/Lily Evans Potter
Summary:
The Shoebox Project is a multimedia story of Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, James Potter, Peter Pettigrew, and Lily Evans in their last years at Hogwarts and first year after school. This is an audiobook and video compilation (and completion) of the collective attempts to podfic the SPB between 2004 and 2014.
Comment:
I've already posted a fic rec for the shoebox project years ago and have raved about this fic on many occasions over the years, but in my eyes this fic absolutely deserves its fandom classic status. And if you've ever wanted to read it but didn't want to download all the pdf files, I highly recommend checking out the podfic version! It's so lovely and it also includes all the art in the videos. I will try to find the tumblr post because I think I remember reading a meta post talking more in depth about the different recordings, but a little bit of that history is mentioned on ao3 as well, and I think the fact that the podfic consists of so many different recordings, done by different groups of fans over the years who were then collected and completed, speaks for the impact this fic has had on the fandom and the love it has deservedly received over the years.

It's time to rave about my latest obsession, and that is @burningaurora's podfics.
I don't get around to reading nearly as much as I want to for a lot of reasons, and I feel like I'm always behind in fics. So much I want to read, so little time.
Well, along comes @burningaurora, who is making podfics of so many good fics I haven't been able to read. I've already read @impishtubist's Da Capo and @msalexwp's Stray Dogs, and now I'm working through @r33sespieces 's Unexpected Reunion. (Which, by the way, are all FANTASTIC fics and WONDERFUL podfics, if you're looking for somewhere to start.)
Now, all of a sudden, my 45 minute commute is fic time rather than listening to talking heads on the radio. I'm *thrilled.* I want @burningaurora to do all of AO3 so that I can just keep listening forever.
So go listen to her podfics! Pick one of the above! Or try @heartofspells's These Days of Dying, or @mostlyoptimisticdinosaur's Basilisk, Boggart, and Boyfriends (oh my), or @engie-ivy's Forgot to Mention One Little Thing, or you KNOW you been wondering what's up with Crimson Rivers.
Seriously, the list is EXTENSIVE. Go listen to a podfic!

💃🏼 Muny muny muny!!!💃🏼 (to the tune of Abba's Money Money Money) here u go 😚
🥰 a fic that gave you warm fuzzies let's GOOOO I'll do two kid fics that are essential reading
To Build a Family by @second-sister
My favorite wolfstar raises Harry, I think. And we get Neville too!!! The way childhood loss and grief are portrayed is gutting in its accuracy, but also healing in watching wolfstar lovingly navigate the complexity of parenting children who are not your biological offspring. I don't want to get too spicy on main but that last bit is v important to me.
And yes I listened via the podfic version ty as always @burningaurora
Away Childish Things by @letteredlettered and podfic by RattleandHum
A CLASSIC. I guess I have a real reparenting your inner child kink huh. Anyway. Required reading for Drarry and, again. Podfic. Need I say more.
RattleandHum is also currently podficcing SebastianL's The Man Who Lived which is a fab segue to...
✨️fic I wish I could read again for the first time
*inhales* WOLF,WOLFWOLF,WOLFWOLF,WOLFWOLF,WOLF
Wolf, Wolf by SebastianL was one of the first fics I ever read and it is a part of me, my DNA, my lil brain meats ya know? If you haven't read it please, please consider reading it. If the MCD scares you DM me we'll talk about it I am so sirius.

HP Rec Fest: days 10-13
Tumblr media
I neglected my reccing duties. This happens when you don't prep and queue all posts beforehand. Did I prep and queue the upcoming posts yet? Of course not. Onwards!
@hprecfest prompts: A fest fic, a dark fic, a WIP I'm following and a fic with >100k words. 2 Drarry and 2 Wolfstar recs.
Nature pricks them on to ramp and rage (21014 words) by @goblinmatriarch (Drarry, Explicit)
Lord Draco Malfoy may be a young man spending time in Dumbledore’s summer court, but that does not mean he needs to succumb to its licentious frivolity. He carries the burden of his lineage, the shadow of rumours, and the dignity of his betrothal to a good match. He is certainly not fool enough to be distracted by the dark curls and ready grin of the court’s stableboy, who seems to have taken up with every courtier who looks his way.
For the fest fic, I give you my favourite story from this year's @hp-bodiceripper fest. It made me laugh so much every time a bucket was mentioned. I need more stableboy!Harry fics in my life. Or to say it in Draco's words: "Surely, Draco had the self-control to be around a saucy drop-trou and his hypnotic bucket-related coquetry without succumbing." Spoiler: he did not.
Do not miss the embedded 12th century rimming debate. It is glorious.
Railway Lands (65012 words) by Maelipstick (Drarry, Explicit)
Draco finds his own way to cope with being a failed Death Eater at Voldemort's headquarters. Voldemort finds a way to destroy the wizarding world even after his death. Harry is trying to hold the world together while his mind quietly comes apart. Warnings for graphic drug use, depression and suicidal ideation, Draco being an arsehole, sex work, criminality, non-con sexual situations, shifting POVs, ofc werewolves, self neglect and self harm, general unprettiness, unplanned parenthood and references to other works of fiction.
This dark fic got its hooks in me during my last time in Drarry fandom. It's pretty unrelenting. I haven't re-read it in a long time but it's still rattling around my brain.
Gathering Home by Quietlemonhush (Wolfstar, 20/?, 74k, Explicit)
Remus flipped the light on and sucked in a breath as he looked over his classroom, as neat and tidy as he had left it the day before. The room exuded warmth, colorful and bright, playmats on the floor and books stacked up along the walls, little boxes of crayons on all of the tables. By the end of the day, ten kindergarteners would arrive to what was functionally their second home, to once again tear it to smithereeens. Eleven, Remus corrected himself—four months into the school year, a new student was joining their class.
Remus shouldn’t be attracted to Sirius Hill, not when Remus is responsible for teaching his five-year-old little brother to read and count, and especially not with that mysterious baby strapped to Sirius’s chest. He shouldn’t. He isn’t. He is not.
Really.
This canon-divergent, trans!Sirius raising Regulus und Harry fic is both a comfort fic and a story hurting my heart in the worst ways. Every single thing this little Reggie says hurts every one of my feelings, and Sirius is trying so damn hard to take care of his boys, and then there is Remus and his mother, who are both so bloody lovely I can't stand it.
marginalia (266547 words) by @spindrifters (Wolfstar, ensemble, 52/59, Explicit)
This story began a long time ago. That part is already written. Nothing can be done about it now. It began with two young men—barely more than boys—who upended the world, magical and mundane alike. Grindelwald and Dumbledore, glorious leaders of the revolution, who brought wizardkind out of hiding and into the light during those last, violent days of 1899. But a winter's night seventy-seven years later is where things really kick off. Because Remus Lupin knows what to expect when you’ve been sold somewhere new. He knows it better than he ever thought he'd have to by this point. He knows how to survive. And Sirius Black is doing his best to just graduate Hogwarts and get himself and his brother away from this goddamn house. He's got it figured out by now. He has a plan. Neither of them, however, had accounted for the other messing everything up by the mere fact of just existing.   (Or, the one where Sirius is heir to a pureblood first family and Remus is a half-blood servant, but a chance meeting leads to healing old wounds, stumbling into love, and just maybe accidentally kickstarting a revolution.)
For my second WIP and >100k fic, I picked this marvel of world building. I'm only at chapter 28 so I need to catch up before this WIP is no longer a WIP. The breadth of characters, backstory and universe creation is incredible. I often get bored with fics this long, but this one is so immersive and ernest in the best ways. You can tell the author wants to tell this story honestly and truly. It is a pure joy. You probably heard of this story already if you're into Wolfstar. It really is that good. Also, Pigoletta is recording the story as a podfic.

Slash Podfic Recs
The world needs more podfics! And lucky for you, if you were on the hunt for some, I've found a few you might enjoy!
Narration is an artform all its own (and audio editing?? I don't even wanna think about that, not gonna lie.) Curl up in bed and close your eyes and let someone tell you a story. Or hit that "play" button and have someone keep you company, and entertained, while performing house chores! Listen to a story while on your morning commute.
A variety of ships for you, a variety of lengths. All excellent stories! All I ask is that you please leave some love for these creators if you stop by; podfics get so little traction compared to the written word. And even if all you can manage is a kudo, I'm sure it would be so very appreciated!

Danse Macabre
written by doshu, narrated by Aspen_Gray. Harry/Tom. Rated M. 2 hours, 45 minutes. Angst. Non-linear narrative. Sad ending.
A last dance. A cold comfort against the inevitability of death.
Harry’s danse macabre began with Tom Riddle in the Chamber of Secrets. It only took him six years to notice.
Theft of Assets, Destruction of Property
written by Helenish, narrated by EosRose. Draco/Neville. Rated E. 3 hours.
Surely it is a mistake to allow a single youthful indiscretion to cloud an already promising career.
An Ode to the Loose and Wrinkly
written by RoozetteR, narrated by fire_juggler. Charlie/Severus. Rated E. 13 minutes.
Before Harry is brought to Grimmauld Place the summer before fifth year, Charlie sneaks away to the Burrow and blows Severus. That is all.
Of Comets and Counter-curses
written by Woldy, narrated by fire_juggler. Remus/Sirius. Rated T. 44 minutes. Traveling. Motorbike.
If the past is a foreign country, can travel help to resolve a troubled history? Dumbledore assigns Remus and Sirius a mission to explore three European cities, or perhaps to find each other. Written for the 2008 RS Games as part of Team Post-Hogwarts using the prompt 'Brothers on a Hotel Bed (Death Cab for Cutie)'.
Sympathy for the Devil
written by Writcraft, narrated by fire_juggler. Harry/Scorpius. Rated M. 40 minutes.
Scorpius has wanted Harry for years. So far, Harry has managed to resist. This Halloween Scorpius hopes to change his mind.
Never Unseen
written by HogwartsToAlexandria, narrated by JocundaSykes. Kingsley/Severus. Rated T. 12 minutes.
Saying he'd hoped the day Severus let him help would come would be overstating the facts, but Kingsley certainly was glad he'd been around the night the other man needed his help more than he needed his pride.
The Once and Future Headmaster
written by allthingsmagical, narrated by JocundaSykes. Albus/Harry. Rated T. 2 hours.
Never has there been a more hopeless crush.
Colourblind
written by Someone_aka_me, narrated by Lady Ravenclaw. Charlie/Draco. Rated T. 14 minutes.
"She says the colours will come when he is finally touching the person he is destined to fall in love with. She says that everything will change in the matter of a single moment." He is fourteen when the world goes sideways.

written by astolat, narrated by Lazulus. Draco/Harry. Rated E. 2 hours, 30 minutes. Courtship. Snakes.
Draco found the nest down in the Manor’s cellars, while he was clearing them out.
Paranoia and Puns
written by You_Light_the_Sky, narrated by RuneLore. Cedric/Harry. Rated T. 1 hour, 20 minutes.
Harry makes three rules in order to survive his fourth year: 1) Watch the new DADA professor like a hawk, 2) Suspect all animals of being animagi, and 3) Avoid Cedric Diggory at all costs.
It's a shame Diggory didn't get the memo.
The Secret Language of Plants
written by Endrina, narrated by sephonered. Series. Remus/Severus; Draco/Harry. Rated E. Part 1: 3+ hours; Part 2: 7+ hours; Part 3: WIP.
“Just… tell me. Tell me what is going on, Snape.” What was going on was that Severus Snape had no trouble tracking down one Petunia Evans, now Dursley, to a little town in Surrey where he saw how exactly she was treating her nephew. Which somehow led to last night and Severus knocking on Lupin’s door with a toddler half-asleep in his arms.
Divination
written by smilebackwards, narrated by sisi_rambles. James/Regulus; James/Lily. Rated T. 8 minutes. Second POV. Sad ending.
Mars is bright.
Only One Word

Empty Houses by bigblackdog Pairing: Remus/Sirius Rating: E Word Count: 6k Podfic available here Read by: bbd_elise Length: 30-60 minutes Remus, I’ve been at Grimmauld all week. I’m not selling it. I went back to look for the letters. I assumed they had been lost but when I was pardoned I learned they sent my things to my mother at Grimmauld. Turns out she didn’t burn them on sight. Found my leather jacket. All our records were broken. And all our letters were safe. The spells I’d put on the box to keep James and Peter out at Hogwarts were still on. I’d forgotten and all my hair felt out when I opened it. find the full podfic library here

fic rec friday
“I don't want it to be like it was. We loved each other so much, but we were so bad at showing it.” Remus explained. “I don’t want it to be like that again. I don’t want to hide things from you. I want to be able to talk about stuff. Everything. It’s going to take time, but like I said, you and I, we can help each other. I can’t say that I’ve been through anything like what you have…Listen the truth is, I haven’t really healed as much as I should have done either, and I wouldn’t suggest any of the methods I’ve tried so far. Maybe just being here for each other will make a difference. I just know that when we are apart, bad things happen.”
~OR Remus and Sirius run away together to the continent and get reacquainted.
Set in the summer after Prisoner of Azkaban.
I personally love this fic, it's honestly right up my alley, so if you like the fic recs I usually post you are probably really going to enjoy this one!
Favourite tropes included are:
HEALTHY COMMUNICATION
Working through some shit together
Fix-it (because they deserve happiness)
Feeling things while on the run
Werewolf communities
Finding a family and getting to keep it
Working through trauma
Wolfstar parenting Harry
Calling Dumbledore out on his bs
Real honest character growth
I found this fic while listening to BurningAuroras podfics so, ya know, there is a podfic available for this fic ;)
As always leave lots of love and kudos to the author (and @burningaurora) and have an amazing rest of the week <3

Harry Potter Rec Fest Day 13 - Over 100K
I so appreciate the dedication that it takes for someone to write over 100K words; I think even my M.A. thesis topped out at 30K (with much academic padding). I've read a ton of long fics so there's probably some recency bias here for @hprecfest day 13, but I've also tried to share a couple different pairings ...
Blood Magic (Podfic) written and read by houseofthehebrideanblcks and thestralsofspinnersend Pairing: Draco x Harry Word count: 334,676 Length: 33:05:11 Rating: E
@thistlecatfics already said all the things about this fic in their recommendation for the podfic the other day, and said it in a much lovelier and more eloquent way than I ever could. I guess I came at it from a different perspective though - as someone who is very lucky to feel not too traumatized by life or struggling with addiction or mental health (not a brag, just context), I got to see inside the brains of people like that and feel great empathy for them. Isn't that what art should do - put you in the shoes of different people and make you see the world differently? This is a slow, beautiful story of down-and-out Draco AND Harry heading toward something like peace and love, but it's a long road to get there. Also featuring endlessly patient counselor Luna, supportive Ron & Hermione, and lots of magical creatures.
The podfic is also really well done. The authors recorded it as a podcast originally. If the 33 hour single file on InternetArchive isn't really your speed, you can get the podcast version here, which includes their commentary after each chapter. Maybe not for everyone, but I found it interesting as a companion piece to hear their writing process and talk about trauma, treatment, and recovery in their own lives.
Choice and Chance by @chaoticcrumpets (Podfic by @etl-echo-audiobooks) Pairing: Draco x Hermione Word count: 116,972 Length: almost 10 hours Rating: M
This fic is so interesting. I had gotten a little burned out on Dramione before listening to this fic and this fully resparked my interest. I don't want to give too much away, but it's a mystery, a time travel adventure, and a romance. All the characterizations are very real, even though there might be more than one characterization of some of the characters. Can I use character more times in one sentence? Ah, and the twist at the end!!! *Chef's kiss*
Sweater Weather written by @lumosinlove (Podfic by @itsaash & cast) Pairing: Wolfstar, other adorable OC pairings and more! Word count: 156,108 Length: 15:23:00 Rating: E
I didn't think a hockey AU would be for me, even though I kinda like hockey. I was tempted by the prospect of Everyone Lives (TM) and I'm so grateful for it. This fic is beautiful, the development of all the characters, both canon and original, is incredible. I laughed, I cried, I gasped, I sighed, and when I was done, I wanted to start reading it all over again. At the time, it was newly finished and a sequel was on the way. I've been waiting for a nice vacation or sick day to reread it and its sequel, Vaincre. @lumosinlove has created a wonderful world and I just want to see the characters play around in it forever. I haven't listened to the podfic, but I'd encourage everyone to give it a shot!
************************************************************************
This one barely counts as a self-rec because I'm really just gushing about the author ...
Way Down We Go by @xiaq Podfic read by Cailynwrites (with @etl-echo-audiobooks) with beautiful album art by @abrilas-art Pairing: Draco x Harry Word count: 109,767 Length: 13 hours Rating: T
If you had asked me the ratings of my two out of three of my favorite novel-length Drarry fics yesterday, I wouldn't have thought the answer would be T, but apparently it is. This story, along with Away Childish Things, rewired my brain. I love the pace, I love the development of both boys' characters, I love the ancillary characters both old and new. It's just a perfectly told story. Although I should be encouraging you to go listen to my podfic on AO3 or Spotify, I can definitely also recommend the reading experience. Don't skip the adorable author's notes containing the adventures of the author's dog and grad school woes (relatable).
If you want to get a taste for the podfic before diving in, try this snippet or this one.

2,5,6 for the fic self rec game 🥰🥰🥰
Thanks for the as Mia!
Send me a self-rec ask!
2. A fic to stay all night reading
Under the Right Moon
Wolfstar, 10/10 chapters, 34k words
Enough bulk to it that you can get a good late night going, but not an overwhelming amount. Watch the tags, but it's about Remus who has a history of SA (via Greyback) and his non-linear recovery from it. Features some truly awful Lyall, some lovely platonic Moonchaser bonding moments, and Sirius who tries so ahrd to help Remus.
5. A fic to make you laugh
Click to Connect
Wolfstar, one shot, 11k words
This is my crackiest fic to date. It's a twist on a soulmate fic with what I've affectionately called "Anal Legos." It features Prongsfoot that are far too comfortable with each other and a truly chaotic way to find a soulmate. Amusing, sexy as hell, and a sweet ending to boot.
6. A fic to make you cry
Dusk
Wolfstar, 2/2, 5.6k words
This is, so far, the saddest thing I've ever written, but in such a good and cathartic way. I still cry when I reread it. Also, check out the podfic for it, by @burningaurora
The Last Diary of Lily Potter
Jily, 5/5, 12.8k words
October 24 still gets me every time.
