Some late night art ramble about freelancing / art balance and a thank you!

Last night inbetween work trying to find something among the pile of poorly named psd files I ended up coming across some WIPs of paintings - so hard to believe I actually spent hours just painting pieces before I really started focusing more on creating "commissionable" styled artwork. Something that I was able to make in a relatively quick manner whilst still enjoying it AND being able to market it as a commission format. Its been so much trial and error and I'm so grateful so many people have given me the opportunity to draw for them ! But man I sort of miss the freedom of painterly pieces like that too. It feels like that was my roots. I guess it was that trap of time constraint whilst also selling relatively low for a very long time. To make any livable amount of income from commissions at those prices I really just had to sell A LOT. And to complete those without spending ages on them they also got a bit more simplified to save on time and manage the quantity. I really hope in the new year, or just near future in general, I manage to finish more really painterly illustrations - hell, even finish the ones I've already started but never got around to finishing because of being too exhausted / burnt out from commission work. Not to mention scrambling to find the energy or time to try and make something for a portfolio to look for a studio job... I love being able to draw so many people's beautiful characters and bring them joy with it , but I never truly realized how difficult the balancing act would be between work art and personal art. Freelance is rough. Happy to be able to do it - but rough. Especially having next to no art mutuals to share with and the reliance on the non-stop mangled social media to push my work out there... Anyway thank you to everyone who's supporting me really. Without your kind words of encouragement and compliments to light my way in the days I feel like giving up I really wouldn't be here. Thank you!

I know I'm a few weeks late to responding to this ask, but I will gladly respond anyways!!!! Thanks so much for this ask, anon!!!

I realised this is a very long response so I'm gonna put a buffer here, click to read about my trip (in no particular order) and see some of the photos I took in QLD!!!

To start off - yes, I HAD A LOVELY TRIP!!! It was actually the first time I went on a passenger plane by myself, too!! There's something very other-worldly being in a whole different state surrounded by strangers... the plane-trips were amazing tho, there was a thunderstorm in Brisbane that I flew over (you could see the lighting UNDER the clouds!!!) and when the plane landed back in Adelaide (SA is my home state <33) there was another storm!! I wasn't worried tho, I had my headphones and a good book and I was set for all my flights ^^

Here are a couple of highlights from my trip:

Went searching for platypuses with my uncle and brother (didn't find any, sadly... but i found a freshwater eel!!!)

Went to an arcade with my cousin!! I had never been to one before, funny enough XDD (also we played laser tag, my team took the high ground and obliterated everyone (we won by like, 4,000 points))

Apparently there are Taco Bell restaurants in every Australian state except SA??? I saw one in Queensland and was like "WHAAAAT I thought Taco Bell was American!!!" and so we went to it and got crunchwraps for dinner!!

Went out to dinner with 20 family members (my brother stabbed me in the hand with a fork bc i tried to steal one of his chips) and had a lovely meal!!

Went to a beach with my cousin and saw a chart hanging up by the lifeguards showing all the lethal jellyfish that frequently appear there. There were eight. Eight killer species of jellyfish. (I love Australia)

Oh speaking of Australia, yes, we saw giant spiders. There was one on the door of my uncle's house and another back at the house we were staying at. Unfortunately I didn't actually find out what species they were... but DEFINITELY not ones we get in SA!!!

I BOUGHT NINETEEN PAIRS OF EARRINGS IN QUEENSLAND. NINETEEN!!! (also got a rad Moon-Knight t-shirt <333)

Went four-wheeled-driving in a jungle!! My brother and I got to stand on the edges of the car while my uncle drove us XDDD

Taught my cousin how to play Deltarune and how to defeat Sans - just thought I'd mention this here as well because it was a highlight XDDD

Overall, I had SUCH a great time away and I'm so happy I have these great memories!!! I'm so grateful for my lovely family (except for my brother who stabbed me >:T) and I loved to spend time with them!!

But now, of course, I'm back in SA working harder than ever on PIC Chapter 2 ^^ Thanks so much to everyone reading this, for your patience, support and love!!! <33333

Yayy I finally get to do one!

I’ve been meaning to do a draw this in your style challenge for a while, but holy moly-! I did not realize how big the family has gotten! When I started this account 2-3 years ago I had no idea what I was in for and the hundreds of amazing people I’d meet. Genuinely, if it weren’t for you all I don’t believe I could ever find as much enjoyment in art as I do now, and for that i am infinitely grateful. I don’t know how long I’ll remain an artist, but for now I’ll enjoy every minute that I am one.

Now on from the sappy stuff! I wanted do host a small dtiys challenge as a thank you. It’s not a competition and there is no prize or time limit. While we're on the topic of De-aging AU's I wanna talk about Jason and Damian if Jason was 14 again real quick.

Do you guys think that Damian looks at this version of Jason, so different from the version he knows, nothing like the person he was told Jason was, and feels uncomfortably seen?

Damian was always told that Jason died because he was reckless, because he disobeyed orders, he was fired as Robin and he got himself killed. A cautionary tale, not a threat to his position. He dismisses Jason because Bruce does, because Dick does, because sometimes even Babs and Alfred do.

That's not the kid that he's looking at now. This Jason is happy, and smart, and full of love that has not yet soured into grief. He hangs on Bruce's every word, trains until his hands bleed and his body gives out to perfect the moves Bruce teaches him. He looks at Bruce with stars in his eyes and he calls him dad.

And Damian can't help but think, that this is the perfect Robin. The perfect son. And if Jason - sweet, loving, strong, Jason - can be fired, can die and have his room locked away and his pictures torn down, can have his last memory as Robin be as A Good Soldier, how could the rest of them ever compete? What could Damian do to stand a chance?

Jason will never grow out of the shadow of Robin, like the rest of them did. As long as Bruce, and Dick, and Babs, and Alfred look at him and see a dead kid who came back wrong, he will never get to be anything else. He will not get to be looked at through who he is now without the shadow of a dead boy looming over him.

And the worst part? Jason is exactly the same person he was back then. Bitter, sure, angry, justifiably, but he is still the boy with too much love in his heart and righteous fury festering in his gut. He is exactly the same boy who threw himself in front of an explosion to save his mother.

(The lines between the mother that betrayed him and the father that disgraced him are so very blurred. Fire or blade or crowbars or fists it does not matter. It ends the same way it always does because Jason Todd always dies, in every universe, in every timeline, Jason dies and crawls out only to be killed again and again and again.)

Comic 1:

First panel, Ingo and Akari are standing together. Someone off-screen asks “oh, is that your dad?”. Akari has an awkward smile and replies “oh, no no. he’s my...” There’s a long pause as she looks at Ingo. He’s leaving it up to her. She finishes, “He’s my coworker... friend... guy.” In smaller font, she continues “yea. that.” Comic 2: A dramatic panel of Volo, looking pissed off, shouting “who are you to interfere?!!” Ingo tugs the brim of his cap lower. The upper half of his face is in shadow, while his eyes stand out. He looks threatening but has his expression is his characteristic neutral-frown, and he says “...I’m her coworker friend guy.”. In the final panel, Machoke is throwing an incredible amount of punches, a reference to Star Platinum from Jojo. Ingo is pointing with one hand, his battle pose. The background text reads, “What does that even mean??” Volo is experiencing off-screen violence.

Comic 3: The comic is titled “Reunion”. In the first panel, Ingo shows off Akari, with a faint smile on his face. She is labelled “best girl (assigned by god)”. He says, “Emmet, this is Akari, my coworker. She’s the reason I was able to return to this station.” In smaller font, Akari comments to herself, “ooh... so this is the man in white.”

In the second panel, in smaller font Ingo notes “I think I remember now...” He says, “Akari, this is Emmet. He's also my coworker.” Coworker is underlined. Emmet is crying in the background, looking confused, conflicted, distressed, and happy. He says, “Brother...?” In the final panel, we see a framed photograph of all three together. Underneath are the words, Employee of the Month. Akari is dressed as a depot agent, and she and Ingo pose with peace signs. Emmet is red faced from crying, but he’s smiling widely. He looks happy.
