The reason i think Bartylus is so amazing is that jegulus, although us Regulus kinnies really want someone like james, excludes the grit of Regulus's character. He's a toxic person who'd hate the idea of being 'saved' despite what he says. His relationship with James would make him obsessive, clinging to this 'perfect; person cause he doesnt know how else to escape the situation he's in and wants the same ending Sirius got. Not saying James is perfect, but even in modern settings i feel like their characters lose a lot of complexity and their dynamic is never written as unhealthy. Whereas Bartylus is toxic not because of their dynamic but because Regulus and Barty individually are toxic. They don't want to save each other, they want to suffer together, and that is really beautiful in it's own way. It erases the need for straight roles- a damsel and a hero- and shows two complex people loving each other the only way they know how. Bartylus captures the pain and repression of their characters, they wouldn't want to be 'perfect'; they wouldn't want a dynamic where, for example, Barty is 'calmed' by Evan and Regulus is 'softened' by James.

complicated relationships with your parents are like. you cut up fruit and bring it to my room without me asking. i can't remember the last time you told me that you were proud of me. you told me i wasn't good enough for you but i'm not even good enough for myself. your hugs feel like coming home. i can't tell you anything that happens in my life. i doubt myself every day because of something you said to me when i was eight. would you like to hear about my day? please don't ask me about my day. i miss you even though you're in the next room. i wish we didn't live together. i've never loved or resented anyone as much as i've loved and resented you. are you okay? are we okay? are we ever going to be okay?

You know what irks me. It's that regulus died for nothing and it's such an understated point- i mean an 18 year old who seemingly had everything gives up his life for a house elf and it's all in vain? But in the books it feels rushed; it's not a satisfying, heartbreaking ending but just an anticlimactic one.
But here me out-
imagine if the locket was the last horcrux to be destroyed (apart form Harry but he isn't aware of this yet) and he goes to the cave ALONE. He accepts that he will die drinking the potion but it's fine as he assumes anyone will be able to kill Voldemort once the horcruxes are all destroyed. So he goes to drink the potion but finds it's water...Because the locket isn't really magic- it's a fake. And because of this Harry never has to die in the cave and Regulus's sacrifice saves the child of the man he loved (because i believe Jegulus is canon- fight me)
So Harry has to follow the note tracking Regulus's life to find the locket and ends up realising regulus and his dad were in love (and who knows maybe he has some revelations about a certain Malfoy). And James is standing there in the afterlife watching him being so selfishly grateful that regulus sacrificed himself for Harry but still missing him because this whole time Regulus has been trapped as an inferni.
But Regulus is set free when the locket is destroyed and JAMES IS WAITING FOR HIM IN THE AFTERLIFE 😭
oh and it's not dumblewhore waiting for harry when he initially dies but regulus (or james or lily or ANYONE better).

jealous regulus over barty is my favorite. i could see regulus consistently putting his arm around barty and going: "hes mine.", "no, but yeah hes mine" in the most unrelated context. Barty fucking loves it, since hes the same.

Are you telling me Tv shows are able to have lesbian representation?!?! Who'd have guessed

Remember, you are not crazy because you ship two characters a show is queerbaiting you into shipping. It's not your fault that with such little representation the queer community turns to shows that exploit them for views. I often see people saying 'you only like things with gay people' HUH WELL MAYBE I ENJOY SEEING SOMETHING I RELATE TOO AFTER YEARS OF SHOWS WITH NO DIVERSITY
Anyway
enjoy your ships- whichever they may be, and stay delusional

Do we really trust Harry Potter, the most oblivious and sexually repressed main character i've ever read about, correctly assessed Wolfstar's 'brotherly' relationship...
