I wasn't around back then, so I don't know how common the psychological understanding of this profound quote was at the time, but it strikes me as one of the most important messages we could possibly get out today. - Anyone who has ever truly conquered the forces of evil inside themselves will tell you that they did it through loving the unlovable. That it has a miraculous transformative effect on the worst parts of our minds. - They'll also tell you that shame, repression and judgements drive these demons deeper, they make them more powerful and eventually they consume everything. - The more I talk to people about the shadow, the more I realize how common it is to experience 'evil' thoughts and how many people are troubled by them. How many people believe they mean something about them. - Of course we'd want to contain these things, of course we'd want to do whatever we could to stop them from spreading. It's a noble thing to do, the idea of loving that which we find detestable seems not only scary but immoral. - But it's what is required to transform these forces on a fundamental level. It's what's required if we ever want to live in a world free of hatred and violence. - It's also what's required if we want to live a life of personal satisfaction, if we want to be able to truly love those around us and if we ever want a shot at inner peace. - The fact that we have them is a simply a sign of our capacity, we are truly free to become anything we want. I had one of those important dreams last night and I woke up super introspective, thinking about the transition this last year was. - I moved to Los Angeles after the most impactful break-up of my life, and in many ways, that transition largely defined my life. - I'd never had to leave someone I was still in love with before, and I'm still not entirely sure how to process that experience. But I do know that I've grown more in this last year than just about any that preceded it. - I see where I sold myself out, I see the long term impacts of compromises I didn't realize I was making, I see where I withheld love, I see where I was scared to commit and all this has made me such a better person I am so much more proud of being. - This last year was crazy, I've regained my sense of self and it's stronger than ever. I've learned to be alone while also learning how to love in ways I was always afraid to. I'm more clear about my purpose than ever before and I feel genuinely equipped to dedicate my life to my mission and my values. - Might be a bit before I feel comfortable dating again but I love this life, I love who I am becoming and I love what I am doing with my life. My family, my friends, my mentors and students, my home, my new city and all of it. - It's bittersweet that something so beautiful could he born from losing something that I love but here we are. WHOOPS! - They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I think a more accurate way of saying it would be the road to hell is made by people who didn't listen to their shadow. - It's a sad irony when some of the kindest people you'll ever meet will suffer from depression, anxiety and repressed anger issues... All because they didn't want to be bad people. - Often times it can even turn you into the very thing you're wanting to avoid, that's what happened with me. - I was a HUGE asshole when I was younger, then I overcompensated by repressing all my anger and selfishness. Guess what happened? I became consumed with anger and selfishness and almost took my life as a result. - Imagine my surprise. - Now I've learned there just isn't anything virtuous in avoiding anger, selfishness or anything deemed 'negative'. - Real virtue is integrating these things into a coherent and honest values system so that you can use them in the ways you deem worthy. - I'm going to be addressing this in my group course coming up at the end of January. Thaaaaanks though. - Okay so anxiety is a funny thing because it both matters and doesn't at the same time. - I think the best approach to dealing with anxiety is to combine Eastern and Western philosophies. - The west says your anxiety is a series of messages from your unconscious that you need to sort out and integrate into a cohesive worldview. Which is absolutely accurate, if you're anxious, you're anxious for a reason and if you understand what's got you all anxious then can do something about it, you become more whole as a person. - Whereas the east says it's all just noise and none of it matters. Which is also accurate and really helpful when you're in the midst of an anxiety attack and need to catch your breath. Or when you need to get a higher perspective on your situation. - I lean more towards Western in that I'd rather have a healthy relationship with myself than transcend what I consider to be myself. A lot of hear me say shit like this and think I have no interest in justice, or that I think there is never a time to make a stand for what's right. - Which is just wrong. I've been rocking anti Nazi gear since I was 15 and so I've had 17 years to think about this problem. - Here's what I find, there are generally two kinds of people in the world. Those who have seen the transformative effect that understanding and compassion can have on the worst parts of the human psyche, and those who haven't. - Those who have seen this transformative effect have a keen insight into the enemies we currently face in the cultural landscape. They not only understand the psychological foundations behind these ideologies, they understand how to root these problems out at their deepest levels. - Those who never sought to conquer the enemy within, are a fucking liability. Maybe good in a street fight, which has it's place, but their long game is trash. - Here's a quote from Sun Tzu in the Art of War, a historical document on the art of conflict who's advice has time and time again predicted the course of human history. - "If you know the enemy and know yourself, in one hundred battles no danger. If you know yourself but not the enemy, one victory for one loss. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, in every battle certain defeat." - I don't know about you, but one hundred battles no danger sound pretty good to me. - However the only way to get there and avoid trading scar for scar is to truly understand your enemy and yourself. Luckily, everything you hate in your enemy is already inside you. If you'll only look, humble yourself and acknowledge that it could've been you who got suckered into thinking dumb shit, we might just have a chance. - A chance at doing more than damage control, we could change things on a fundamental level. I try to be a grounded and as scientifically minded as possible... But there's some shit I just can't explain. Synchronicity is probably the best example. - I've heard it described as possibly the unconscious being aware of FAR MORE than we ever imagined and organizing us around our environment in highly functional ways.. which kind of makes sense in theory, but there's no way to prove it. - I've also heard it explained as hippie magic with quantum stuff and all that, but once you start thinking you've got a handle on quantum mechanics I get even more suspicious. - Yet, it's a process I've relied on for about 12 years. I've relied on it because through trial and error I've found I could trust it. - I don't know how to explain it, but when I stay true to myself and follow my intuition especially when it doesn't make logical sense... Things come together as if they were planned the whole time. - The people, opportunities, circumstances and shifts in perspective required to make things happen that are aligned with my vision are more than a little surreal sometimes. - Divine plan? Unconscious guidance and pacing? Who the fuck knows, all I know is this... Something wants you to be the real you and will support you in incredible ways if you choose to follow it. - Something seems to align us with our environment for the purpose of advancing our individual expression and creativity. Okay for real though, I feel like this should be the first thing in the human handbook. - It's seriously amazing to me that after millions of years of evolution, that we're just now barely starting to get a grip on how our emotions work. - It makes more sense that you should just be able to push a thought away if you don't like it. It makes so much sense that none of us even question it until we have to. - It's just another one of those hilarious tragedies. You can spend your whole life trying to be a good person, just to have that speficic effort be the thing that turns you into a monster... How terribly tragic, almost cruel. Yet, also kind of poetic. - As much logical sense as it might make on the surface, if you really look closely... It makes even more sense that taking a tyrannical stance towards our inner world creates catastrophic results. Like no shit right? - Treat yourself like a monster long enough and see what happens. There's this thing about creative do gooder types. They take shit care of themselves. - Truth is most of the time it comes down to guilt, or fearing being a 'bad person'. At least in most of the people I talk to. - Which makes sense, it takes a lot to make someone create something honest and present it to the world. Having to prove you're a good person would just about do it. - But the thing is, for most people there's no end point. There's no point at which they've scored enough 'good person points' so call it a day and let it go. - So they give and they give, rarely getting anything back, then burn out and wonder what the hell happened. - Sound like you? - Well check this out.. the fact that you even give a shit means you're at least mostly good person. Someone once told me that the part of the brain that processes pain is the same part that processes pleasure. - I never did the research to confirm that one, but I did notice something in my integration process. - After a while 'painful' emotions actually start to feel good. - It's funny to joke about the pain and stuff, but once you get comfortable with this stuff it stops hurting and actually becomes pleasurable. Which is a little weird to say, but trust me on this one. - Of course not all the time, sometimes I still crumple under the weight of my own experience. But if I stick with it I almost always end up cracking up laughing as I get to the other side and it ends up taking less and less time to get there. - So yeah, I joke about the pain kuz it's funny to me...
