That's right, they're back!
To cut a long story short, I got really burnt out from running this blog and also got super hyperfixated on my other projects, but now I'm back and ready to go!
Just two things to mention:
1 - I'm getting rid of the side characters, for now (with the exception of Rosemariee) since they're not connected to the main story. They might show up again at some point tho
And 2 - I want to actually get somewhere with this story without burning myself out, so I'm going to stop caring so much about whether every single drawing looks perfect. So if things look a little more sketchy or the anatomy is a little messed up
That's all for now, I hope you're ready for Minervaa's chaos bc they'll only get weirder from here (the ressurection is canon btw)
Also have one more bonus doodle that may or may not be foreshadowing future plot points:

The Morning Gift
Author: Eva Ibbotson
First published: 1993
Rating:  ★★★★☆
I adored this story! A romance born on the eve of WW2, that holds the foreboding but still shows you that people still lived their lives and had their hopes. I was happy to note that for once the main female character of Ibbotson´s is not a sheer perfection (this girl has actually some issues to go through), though I admit I could still do without the comically evil rival (it would have been so much more interesting if there actually at least appeared a possibility the other girl might succeed). But all in all, especially because of the last third of the book, I thought this was a well-crafted romance with some, perhaps cheesy, but well-used tropes. Just, for the love of god, DO NOT listen to this as an audiobook recorded by Kate Lock, who insisted on using a fake German accent and squeaky voice for the main character, making her sound like a stupid child of 10. (And that is not the only horrible thing she does to the selected characters).
Jane, the Fox & Me
Author: Fanny Britt
First published: 2012
Rating: ★★★★☆
A beautifully executed graphic novel in which the story somewhat fizzles out and feels unfinished, definitely could have been longer and yet I rate it quite high simply because it hit me like a train. I was not a fat kid but all my life I felt I was, even if in my case there was no bullying. I felt this little girl´s pain deeply.
The Witches: Salem, 1692
Author: Stacy Schiff
First published: 2015
Rating: ★★★☆☆
I think Stacy Schiff is an excellent historian and has an extremely readable style of writing. I also think she has done a stupendous job putting this mammoth project together, but I need to agree with those who complain about the density and slowness of the text. It is next to impossible to keep track of the names and the accusations/descriptions of the alleged witchcraft are so similar (or completely the same) that it is very taxing to keep up. I am not sure whether I should be complaining though, because, after all, I DID want a book about these events and I got it. I would recommend an audiobook though, makes it easier to get through.
The Clockmaker's Daughter
Author: Kate Morton
First published: 2018
Rating: ★★★★☆
This is a story of a house and people connected to it in an intriguing web of connections. It spans from the 1860s to the modern day, not always in chronological order, and I must say that Kate Morton managed to jump through the timelines quite effortlessly. There is a great number of characters but I had no problems following who was who, though admittedly some of the timelines were less interesting than the others (notably and predictably for me I enjoyed the modern one the least). I also had trouble when some things, already revealed to the reader, were "revealed" again. The main voice is that of a ghost (trust me, this is not a spoiler), and while I did not mind it, I also believe the book would have been stronger had that been completely committed and we only got to know that particular character from the other stories it touches. Even after all that I have to say I was surprised at how easy this was to read (it IS a chunker) and how much I enjoyed it.
A Face Like Glass
Author: Frances Hardinge
First published: 2012
Rating: ★★★☆☆
I adore the fact that Frances Hardinge does not talk down to children, because this is undeniably a middle-grade book, but does not shy from some pretty heavy stuff. However perhaps I have read too much Frances Hardinge at this point because I tend to really like/be intrigued by the start of her books, her world-building and her unique ideas, but then it all became too much with this one and I was impatient for the story to be over.
Brigid of Kildare
Author: Heather Terrell
First published: 2009
Rating: ★★☆☆☆
I am sad to report that this book was kind of a mess. The historical bits would have been just fine on their own, even if I had wanted a little more depth, many a time I felt like we were merely dipping our toes into the fascinating story of Brigid. But then the author decided to weave in a "mystery" set in modern times and those chapters, apart from being unnecessary to the story, felt just tedious to the point I was considering skipping them altogether. A bummer.
When Women Were Dragons
Author: Kelly Barnhill
First published: 2022
Rating: ★★★☆☆
As long as it was a family tragedy infused with the elusive and unexplained, I was enjoying this book quite a lot. But then, in its second half, it becomes too wordy, too idealistic, too uninteresting.
The Silent Unseen
Author: Amanda McCrina
First published: 2022
Rating: ★★☆☆☆
The good thing: the topic, even if you have read loads of WW2 books, is an unusual one. The bad thing: the story is extremely weak (walking and talking do not an intriguing narrative make), the characters shallow, the motivations extremely basic, the romance needless and not particularly well done. No matter how many betrayals posing as shocking twists you cram into the last third, you cannot make me invested in this.
Charlotte's Web
Author: E.B.White
First published: 1952
Rating: ★★★★☆
As a non-UK and non-US child, I have never read this book when I was its target audience. I picked it up now more for the super cute edition than anything else. And indeed throughout I kept thinking: sure, it´s cute. But is it that great? And then I got kicked in the guts by that friggin ending.
Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands
Author: Heather Fawcett
First published: 2024
Rating: ★★★★★
Just as enjoyable and delightful as the first volume! I love the tone, the language, and the romance (I am SHIPPING Emily and Wendell so hard), it can be both touching and humorous at the same time. Cannot wait for the conclusion of this series which so far I find to be one of the most joyous literary events in years.
The Great Mortality: An Intimate History of the Black Death, the Most Devastating Plague of All Time
Author: John Kelly
First published: 2005
Rating: ★★★★☆
The Black Death epidemic of the 14th century remains one of the most gruesomely fascinating events in European history and I dare say this book is a very accessible, informative and well-organized study of it. It is strictly chronological, leading you in the steps of the disease, and adding stories and explanations that make it all less clinical and more humanly tragic. Just perhaps the ending sounds way too much like "but in the end it was a good thing" felt like a very, very weird conclusion.
Psyche and Eros
Author: Luna McNamara
First published: 2023
Rating: ★★☆☆☆
I finished this book out of spite more than anything else. The myth of Psyche and Reos may just be my favourite of all the Greek myths, unfortunately instead of crafting it into something fresh and memorable Luna McNamara tried her hand at mixing every Greek myth you have ever heard of and made Psyche insufferable during the process for good measure. It is not even subtle mixing, instead, she goes full Marvel Universe of Greek gods on you, twisting the story to incredible lengths just to cram more of the mythology into her book. I would also say that the original myth takes quite a beating in this reimagining, being stripped of much that made it so appealing to me as a reader. Sometimes less is more.
A Middle-Earth Traveller: Sketches from Bag End to Mordor
Author: John Howe
First published: 2018
Rating: ★★★★★
Beautifully executed "sketchbook". It would seem that while Alan Lee was more concerned with the Elven stuff, John Howe focused on Dwarves, Orcs and the more gritty parts we saw in the movies. There are, however, also illustrations from the Silmarillion included. I would imagine this is a perfect book to take with you outside, where you can sit under a tree and just leaf through, dreaming of Middle-Earth.

MR. BUNGLE MELVINS  ☆ SPOTLIGHTS ★ The Showbox, Seattle
  Photo Review by Chris Schanz
One might ask what would bring me out of retirement? Was I retired? What the hell have I been doing for the past three years? All things Doomed and Stoned have been in flux for me. I’ve been focusing on my day job. I’ve been focusing on my family. I’ve been focusing on my garden. All this focusing has left me nearsighted. Blurry. The COVID era left me with a shitty hangover (not long COVID – I’m just trying to forget that shit and move on!). Sure – I’ve shot shows, band portraits, weddings, funerals yadda yadda fucking yadda. I wanted a sign that the universe is ready for my gifts, once again.
Enter Mr. Bungle and The Melvins. The Geek Show Tour, sponsored by Ipecac Records celebrates both the vast accomplishments of Mike Patton (Faith No More, Fantomas, Mr. Bungle) and The Melvins – on their 40th anniversary! The perfect lure to get me off my ass and feel like I actually can contribute something to music, art and photography in general without licking the taint of Instagram and an AI-generated algorithmic overlord soon set to devour us, Titans, Gods and all.
The Showbox at the Market is the perfect set. I feel at home there, usually right by the soundboard. So many shows seen there – Sonic Youth, Nudedragons (Soundgarden), Brothers Of the Sonic Cloth, Sleep, Uncle Acid, Bell Witch, Graveyard, Chelsea Wolfe, The Black Angels – on and on, and on and on. It’s by far Seattle’s best concert hall, IMHO.
SPOTLIGHTS
I admit. I wasn’t prepared for Spotlights. A buddy of mine in Denver by way of San Francisco said they’re sweetly DOOMY. I was in. I got three songs to fall in love. Head over heels! Words escape my brain, only memories of sweet, subsonic joy flowing through my chest and brain. I followed up with Sarah Quintenero after the show at the merch booth, loading up on their vinyl. I’m blasting “Tidals” on vinyl while writing this in my cave, but “Alchemy for the Dead” is a MASTERPIECE! I’ve been binging on their Bandcamp all week now. Bold, deep bass fuzz, ethereal vocals and serrated guitar riffs. My new summer soundtrack.
They’re still on tour – and I highly advise you to see them now!

MELVINS
This brings me back to the Melvins. The force that shaped my twenties in Seattle. My band Fuzzbud had a six-degrees-of-Kevin Bacon thing with a Morton, WA / Monteseno, WA, somebody’s cousin played in a band that opened for…whatevs. We tuned to DUH flat and had a good time. BUT…The Melvins were always a mainstay in any of my playlists.
King Buzzo did NOT disappoint! I was singing along from the photo pit. I was kidding beforehand that there should be some sort of SNL skit – a play by play commentary of the photo pit action. Think Howard Cosell announcing each of the photogs falling over each other for the shots. I thought it was funny, anyways. I’m a dork.
ANYWHOO. Buzzo provides! Dale’s a GOD. I got my HEALTHY fix of Houdini, culminating in a THREE BASS OVERLOAD on Night Goat with Sara Qintenero from Spotlights and Trevor Dunn from Mr. Bungle joining Steve McDonald to rumble your bunghole. What did I miss by NOT seeing the tour finale in San Francisco? A reunion of Fantomas (Mike, Buzz and Dave Lombardo)! When these guys get together, (black) magic always happens!
The Bride Screamed Murder by Melvins
Melvins Setlist
"I Can’t Shake It" (1998 split with Cosmic Psychos, Some Girls/I Can’t Shake It)
"Zodiac" (1990’s Bullhead)

"I Want to Hold Your Hand" (2018’s Pinkus Abortion Technician - Beatles Cover)

MR. BUNGLE
The main event. I knew they led with the Mr. Rogers theme on most nights. ADORABLE! But to my surprise, and delight! They performed the John Sebastian theme to “Welcome Back Kotter”! FUCK YES. I’m a Sweathog and everyone knows it! We would also be treated to the Pepto Bismol jingle not too far into the set.
I was wanting, wishing for a few more songs from 1991’s Mr. Bungle release, primarily some “Squeeze Me Macaroni” and “Stubb-A-Dub” action. Stubb was my go-to track in our house in college. After many a trip, I believed I was the proverbial “family dog” to our tribe…just elated to be along for the ride scrambling from party to party. Luckily for me, I got some “My Ass Is On Fire” and I was satiated. “Speak Spanish Or Die” brought me right back to my thrash and skating days (Days. Rolled my ankle on the half-pipe and drove the crew to all the spots after that). Van Halen’s Loss of Control? A TOTAL surprise and I was elated! Ear to ear grins and giggles!
I came for the Melvins, Mike Patton and Dave Lombardo, but I left with a deep adoration for Spotlights and a 365-day calendar of “The Many O-Faces of Scott Ian” and that’s more than OK. I’m in love. Thank you, Scott, for fulfilling this schoolboy’s adolescent dreams, 30 years later!
The Night They Came Home by Mr. Bungle

THE WHALE | FILM REVIEW
The Whale (2022) ★★★★
Drama, 1h 57m
Dir. Darren Aronofsky
Cast: Brendan Fraser, Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, Ty Simpkins, Samantha Morton, Sathya Sridharan, Jacey Sink
Summary:
A reclusive English teacher suffering from severe obesity attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter for one last chance at redemption. (Letterboxd)
Tumblr media
My review (slight spoilers):
Before watching The Whale, I had set some expectations that were only half met. My expectation for amazing acting fully came through, with an incredible comeback by Brendan Fraser that is absolutely worth the hype. But rather than my expected heart-warming goodbye story, it was very dark and cold most of the time. It was a great one-location film that wasn’t easy to watch but I still highly recommend it.
The story portrays the evils of depression and the addiction it leads up to and it is heartbreaking beginning to end. Even more so are the moments between Charlie (Brendan Fraser) and Ellie (Sadie Sink). Since I expected something more heart-warming, their toxic dynamic came as a great shock, especially as it just kept going. Whenever Ellie would reject Charlie’s advances to get to know her, something in Brendan Fraser’s facial expression would be so touchingly painful, I couldn’t help but feel so much for his character. He could act with his eyes alone which makes his performance worthy of that Oscar nomination. Ellie’s character isn’t easy to act out either as she is very conflicted, and it really showed Sadie Sink is a young actor to watch. The final scene became that much more heartbreaking after everything that was said and done between them both, I’m glad I wore waterproof makeup to the theatre.
Great acting isn’t just found between those two but with the whole cast, which consists of a pretty small number. The most outstanding performance to me was that of Liz (Hong Chau). I daresay she might have been my favourite supporting actress of the entirety of that year. Whenever she was on screen, my eyes were on her and the perfect way she delivered each and every line. The chemistry between her and Fraser on-screen was beautiful and if the film had been just about the two of them, it would already have been amazing.
I’m glad Charlie’s homosexuality was established early on because it made the references to queer literature (Moby-Dick, Song of Myself) a lot more valuable. As a literature student, it added more layers and points of interest to the story and makes me appreciate the writing more, even though it isn’t incredibly subtle.
The Whale is heartbreaking but with Charlie’s naturally positive personality, it still held on to some heart-warming moments and was surprisingly uplifting and empowering at times. Needless to say, its topics of death, depression and eating disorders are all quite triggering so it feels vital to be in the right headspace to watch. An incredible comeback that makes me excited for anything with Brendan Fraser and the rest of the cast in the future!

Super Mario Bros.
“Super Mario Bros.” looked like a movie that would be fun to make fun of, but ended up being extremely difficult to sit through.
Mario Mario and his brother, Luigi Mario, are plumbers working in Brooklyn. Luigi starts dating a girl named Daisy. When Daisy gets kidnapped and transported into another dimension, Mario and Luigi jump in to rescue her. Before Daisy disappeared, Luigi was able to procure her necklace. The Mario Brothers come to realize that the necklace is an ancient meteorite that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs in their reality. Placed in the wrong hands, the meteorite can be used to fuse the two realities back together.
I remember watching this movie when I was in middle school and thinking it wasn’t the best, but it was cool to see such a different take on the Mario Brothers. This was back when I thought turning every IP into something gritty was cool. Now that I’m older, I don’t really subscribe to the belief. I think some properties benefit from a more gritty take, but most don’t. A prime example is the Mario Brothers. People like their world because it’s vibrant and fun. “Super Mario Bros.” takes all of that and throws it out the trash. This universe is a seedy underbelly, almost like a dystopia. It’s constantly dark and people don’t know how to use their car brakes. I don’t mind Mario having a Brooklyn accent, but I will never understand why they chose John Leguizamo to play Luigi. I think he’s fine, despite the fact that I don’t like him in a lot of movies, but the age gap between him and Bob Hoskins makes their being brothers implausible. I think Bob Hoskins was fine as Mario, but I don’t think he’s a mascot that kids could get behind. There were a bunch of mind-baffling changes made from the source materials that just do not work. Goombas are known to be smaller creatures, but they’re hulking beasts in this movie. Yoshi looks like a generic dinosaur. They never refer to King Koopa as Bowser. King Koopa also just looks like a normal human until the very end when he turns into a generic, cheap-looking dinosaur. What pisses me off the most was what I learned about after I rewatched the movie. I always love hearing about actors enjoying their time on set and how the director fosters a positive environment while filming. I genuinely think this produces a better performance overall. Reading about the sheer incompetence of Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel made my blood boil. You know it’s bad when a majority of the cast had to be under the influence of whatever they could get their hands on in order to get through production. Bob Hoskins would even talk badly about the director a couple of years later, even after they resigned from directing entirely. Dennis Hopper, the guy who played King Koopa, reportedly got so fed up that he yelled at the director for three hours straight. There’s even a story about how Rocky Morton poured hot coffee on one of the extras because he didn’t like them. Then, he later tried to deny this by saying he was only trying to make the extra’s costume look more weathered. This is the behavior of a trash human being. I normally don’t condone letting personal gripes be leveled in a professional setting, but I think this is the rare occasion where it’s warranted. I’m glad these two aren’t directing movies anymore. They don’t deserve to. They’re not only incompetent, but they’re also calloused, evil people whose legacy will be this stain on cinematic history.

"like its hot" by Morton J Mendelson
Time: 8:04
Difficulty: ★★★★ Theme: ★★★★ Fill: ★★★★
Favorite Clues:
15A: Pre-nursing homes? (5) 18A: Potter's area of expertise (5)
We love a Wednesday that almost feels like a Thursday, don't we, folks? This week has been great so far for puzzles that don't rely on the traditional "several long entries with something in common and revealer at the end" archetype, and I've been enjoying them a lot. Today's theme requires solvers to continue solving the seven theme entries by pivoting down when hitting a wall (for new solvers, an entry clued with an em-dash usually indicates the entry is the second half of another entry).
Without a revealer clue, it took me until the third pass to start to put together what to do with the down theme entries - FAST, SPLIT, and TEASER were all figured out on crosses and I could tell they were somewhat related to the clue, but definitely missing something. After inputting UTERI for 15A and MAGIC for 18A (both fantastic clues), SPLIT TICKET clicked and the rest of the puzzle was smooth from there.
I think there were some awkward tenses (USER manual @14A) and naticky brands (SANKA @24A and STOLI @70A) but the crosses weren't too hard that it was unreasonable or impossible. On the whole, the puzzle was definitely on the more difficult end of the Wednesday range, but still firmly within the realm of reasonable, and I appreciated being challenged more than expected midweek.

Theatre Review: Chicago starring Jinkx Monsoon as Matron "Mama" Morton (Ambassador Theatre, Broadway) ★★★★★
When a production has been running for as long as Chicago has—over 26 years on Broadway—there’s an expectation that it might have become a dusty museum piece, but this one continues to razzle dazzle ’em eight shows a week. One element that helps to keep this Tony-winning revival so vital is its frequent cast changes in key roles, often with headline-grabbing names. Last year saw Angelica Ross and…

Type: Evaporated salt pellets Weight: 50 lbs. Use for: 2-4 bags/month We love this salt because it's sold by Morton, the leader in the water softener salt industry and a brand that has become synonymous with quality and purity. The Clean and Protect II Water Softening Pellets dissolve easily in water and contain up to 99.65% sodium chloride, so they're a great option for anyone looking for a highly pure, dissolvable softener salt product. Key Features: - High-purity pellets - The Clean and Protect II Water Softening Pellets are sold in pellet form, making them ideal for treating very hard water. They're 99.65% sodium chloride, so they'll leave minimal residue behind in the brine tank. - 3 bag sizes - You can buy this Morton salt product in three size options: 25, 40, and 44-pound bags. - High-quality softening - Customers agree that the Clean and Protect II Water Softening Pellets is one of the highest-quality softener salt products available today, and can even be used to rejuvenate old water softeners that have previously been used with poor-quality salt products. Best For: People who want to spend their money on the highest quality skin-friendly water softener salts available today. Pros: - Using the Morton Clean and Protect II Water Softening Pellets in your water softener is easy thanks to the easy-tear opening and the sturdy plastic handle. - You won't find a better quality, highly-pure salt pellets product than this Morton softener salt. - Enjoy reduced cleaning thanks to the salt's high purity, which minimizes dirt accumulation, bridging, and clumping in the brine tank. Cons: - You pay more for a premium product. Morton's Clean and Protect II Water Softening Pellets are competitively priced, but costlier than rock salt and solar salt products. Best Natural Salt Option Our Rating★★★★★ Diamond Crystal Solar Naturals Solar Salt Crystals Based on our research, the best natural water softening crystals are the Diamond Crystal Solar Naturals Solar Salt Crystals. Type: All-natural solar salt Weight: 50 lbs Use for: 2-4 bags/month These NSF certified salt crystals have a high purity of 99.6% and are produced by the natural process of evaporating sea salt, which produces a product with a low insoluble content and superior dissolving abilities - good news if you have sensitive skin and need salt that properly dissolves in water. Key Features: - High purity - The Diamond Crystal Solar Naturals Solar Salt Crystals are just 0.05% off being as pure as our top pick, the Morton salt pellets, with a purity rating of 99.6%. - Made naturally - Solar salt is made by the natural process of evaporating seawater with the sun, a process that just uses "sun, wind, and time" (according to the manufacturer). - Multiple bag sizes - You can save money by buying a bigger bag upfront if you decide to be a committed Diamond Crystal customer. The salt crystals come in bags from 25 pounds to 20 kilograms, plus extra-large totes from 1,800 pounds to 2,000 pounds. Best For: People who prefer all-natural water softening salt that won't add anything artificial or impure to a softened water supply. Pros: - We love that the Diamond Crystal Solar Naturals Solar Salt Crystals are made from a completely natural process, meaning you can enjoy salt-softened water that doesn't contain added chemicals or impurities. - These salt crystals have a low insoluble content (which is obvious by their clean, white appearance), minimizing residue in the brine tank and making cleaning easier. - It's good to know that this Diamond Crystal water softener salt conforms to the NSF/ANSI/CAN Standard 60 requirements for drinking water treatment chemicals. Cons: - Sodium chloride crystals aren't typically as good as salt pellets for treating very hard water, so check with the manufacturer to make sure they're right for you. Best High-Purity Salt Our Rating★★★★★ Diamond Crystal Bright & Soft Salt Pellets We think that the Diamond Crystal Bright & Soft Salt Pellets is the best water softener salt product for people prioritizing high-purity sodium in their water softening system. Type: Compacted water softener salt pellets Weight: 50 lbs Use for: 1 bag/month These salt pellets are up to 99.8% pure- that's about 0.2% purer than any other softener salt on this list - meaning that skin sensitivities are highly unlikely to be triggered by the minute concentration of impurities in the product. Key Features: - Highest-purity salt - You won't find many other water softening salt products with a higher purity rating than this. With only 0.2% non-NaCl molecules, the Diamond Crystal Bright & Soft should almost eliminate skin irritation associated with impurities. - Prevents mushing and bridging - Due to their high purity, these water softener pellets reduce the likelihood of mushing and bridging in the brine tank, ensuring your soft water always contains the right amount of properly-dissolved salt. - 5 bag sizes available - The manufacturer sells this salt product in 5 bag sizes, from the smallest 25 pound bag to the largest 2,000 pound tote. Best For: People who want to look after their skin and their water softening system with the highest-purity salt. Pros: - We love that the Diamond Crystal Bright & Soft pellets are almost completely 100% water soluble, so they're highly unlikely to cause skin irritations linked to dissolving problems. - Again, this Diamond Crystal water softener salt conforms to NSF/ANSI/CAN Standard 60 for drinking water chemicals with health effects, which is reassuring to see when you're looking for water softening salt that won't irritate your skin with impurities. - Carrying, lifting, and pouring salt from the bags is made easier thanks to their two-handled design. Cons: - Unlike some of the natural salts on this list, the Diamond Crystal Bright & Soft pellets aren't entirely additive-free. They contain Sodium Hexametaphosphate (SHMP), which is generally recognized as safe by the FDA, to prevent mushing and bridging. Runner-Up Natural Salt Our Rating★★★★★ Morton Pure and Natural Water Softening Crystals Our runner-up choice for natural water softener crystals is the Morton Pure And Natural Water Softening Crystals. Like the Diamond Crystal product, these salt crystals are additive-free and made from a completely natural process, so they're another great option for people with skin sensitivities who want to avoid softener salts laced with impurities and additives. Type: High-purity salt crystals Weight: 40 lbs Use for: 3-4 bags/2months Customers love Morton Pure and Natural salt, but this product is on the pricey side and doesn't seem to have an NSF certification, which puts it slightly behind the Diamond Crystal salt in our eyes. Key Features: - High-purity salt crystals – From what we can tell, the Morton Pure And Natural Salt is made from solar salt, although we're missing information about the salt's actual purity rating. - 40-pound bags – There's a single bag size for these Morton water softener crystals: 40 pounds. Morton recommends adding about two bags of salt to your softener every two months, depending on your water hardness and daily water usage. - 4 benefits in 1– The Pure and Natural salt offers a complete solution in most water softening systems. Importantly for sensitive skin, it reduces skin and hair dryness, as well as reducing scale buildup, extending appliance lifespans, and minimizing your cleaning duties. Best For: People who are loyal to Morton but want a natural, additive-free alternative to Morton's slightly more processed salt products. Pros: - Again, no additives and minimal impurities means a greatly reduced risk of skin sensitivity and irritation. - Like all Morton products, the Pure And Natural Salt is one of the best salts for treating hard water scale in most water softener systems. Expect good dissolving and complete scale elimination (with the correct softening settings). - Thanks to the easy-tear opening and sturdy plastic handle, Morton salt bags are easy to open and lift. Cons: - We couldn't find information about this product's purity percentage, which makes it difficult to compare to competitors. Best Non-Salt Option Our Rating★★★★★ Morton Potassium Chloride Pellets Based on our research, the Morton Potassium Chloride Pellets are the best choice for people who would rather avoid salt altogether due to skin sensitivities, but still want the benefits of ion exchange water softening. Type: Potassium chloride Weight: 40 lbs Use for: 2-4 bags/month These pellets are almost entirely free from salt, (containing at least 98.1% potassium chloride), but have the same benefits as a Morton salt-based product, including complete water solubility and exceptional water softening. Key Features: - 98.1% potassium chloride – The Morton Potassium Chloride Pellets contain almost 100% potassium chloride, so they’re almost completely impurity-free. - Salt-free softening – You use this potassium chloride product exactly the same way as you'd use normal salt in your water softening system, and it produces the same results - you just need a bit more potassium chloride for effective softening. - 40-pound bags - The Morton Potassium Chloride Pellets are available in easy-open, easy-carry 40-pound bags. Best For: People with big budgets who want to avoid all the setbacks of using salt in their water softening system - including possible skin irritation and additional salt intake - and prefer to buy from the most reliable brand. Pros: - There's no risk of salt-related skin irritation with this Morton product because it contains no sodium chloride (salt). It's almost completely pure potassium chloride. - Aside from being kinder to skin and hair, the Morton Potassium Chloride Pellets have other benefits due to being salt-free: they're suitable for people on low-sodium diets and they don't give water a slimy feel (which is common with sodium chloride). - You shouldn't notice a difference in your softening results after switching from salt to this product. You'll enjoy the same scale prevention and improved lather with soap and detergents. Cons: - The cost of these potassium chloride pellets is significantly higher (about $25 upwards) than the Morton salt products. The perks of salt-free ion exchange come at a premium. Best For Hard Water With Iron Our Rating★★★★★ Morton Clean and Protect with Rust Defense Iron in hard water may dry out the skin, leading to irritation and itchiness - and we've found that the Morton Clean and Protect with Rust Defense is the best salt product for treating low iron levels AND hard water, eliminating sensitive skin and hair issues caused by both. Type: Evaporated salt pellets Weight: 40 lbs. Use for: 1 bag/month These water softener pellets offer all the usual benefits of a Morton product, including easy dissolvability and high-efficiency water softening, so the salt itself shouldn't aggravate your skin. Key Features: - Removes 10x more iron - According to Morton, the Clean and Protect with Rust Defense pellets can remove 10x more iron than normal sodium chloride salt pellets. We'd love to see data to support this impressive statistic. - Evaporated salt pellets – This Morton water softener salt product combines evaporated salt pellets with other ingredients to both soften and reduce iron in water. - Better for water softening system - If your water contains iron, the Clean and Protect with Rust Defense pellets offer good protection for your water softener. Benefits of iron-free water include reduced fouling of resin beads and longer softener lifespan. Best For: Well owners who have hard water with a low iron content and who want to avoid the skin and hair effects of scale and rusting with a pure, all-in-one product from a reliable brand. Pros: - We think it's great that the Morton Clean and Protect with Rust Defense prevents skin and scalp issues associated with both hard water and iron. If you're looking for a convenient solution to treat both of these issues in one, you'll find it here. - Reducing iron in water also prevents rust stains and metallic taste. - You don't need any more salt than normal when you add this product to your water softening system. Morton recommends about 2 bags every 2 months - the same as for its other salt products. Cons: - Due to its additional iron removal abilities, this Morton salt product contains the following additives: sodium citrate and citric acid (naturally occurring, FDA-approved), and a small amount of surfactant (detergent). Not ideal if you want to avoid additives and impurities that could irritate your skin. Runner-Up Non-Salt Option Our Rating★★★★★ Nature's Own Potassium Solution The Nature’s Own Potassium Solution is our second-choice option for people looking to avoid water softening salt altogether in their ion exchange systems. This salt-free potassium solution contains no minerals or impurities that are known to aggravate the skin and produces scale-free water without the sliminess of salt-softened water. Type: Potassium chloride Weight: 40 lbs. Use for: 2-4 bags/month Why does it take second spot behind the Morton potassium chloride? It's not quite as long-lasting or popular with customers as Morton's product. Key Features: - Salt-free softening - Enjoy all the usual soft water benefits without the salt. We can't find a percentage for purity for this product, though. - NSF Certified - Just for extra reassurance that the Nature’s Own Potassium Solution won't add any dangerous chemicals to your water, it has an official NSF/ANSI/CAN Standard 60 certification. - 40-pound bags - You can buy this potassium solution in a single 40-pound bag size. Best For: Anyone who, for some reason, doesn't want to buy the Morton potassium chloride and still wants to enjoy the benefits of no-salt softening. Pros: - No salt means no risk of irritation for people who are sensitive to salt in water. - We always love to see an official NSF certification for safety and quality. - Customers reported benefits including no slimy feel as you get with salt) and better water for watering plants. Cons: - We'd love to know what percentage of potassium chloride is included in this product, but we can't find the information anywhere. 🧾 Buyer's Guide: How To Choose The Best Water Softener Salt For Sensitive Skin When you're deciding on the best water softener salt for sensitive skin, make sure to consider the following factors: Your Budget Start by determining your maximum annual budget for water softener salts. Skin-friendly water softener salt is often slightly more expensive than normal water softener salt because it's made using the most natural processes (usually evaporation) and is typically a very pure form of salt that dissolves well in water, reducing the likelihood of skin irritation. The purer the salt, the more expensive the product. The general cost of a 40-pound bag of high-purity softener salt is $5-$8. Potassium chloride, a salt-free alternative that doesn't aggravate skin like sodium chloride, is significantly more expensive, costing about $26 per 40-pound bag. But the cost might be worth it if you want to avoid sodium altogether. Your Household Water Hardness Your household water hardness is another factor to consider when deciding on the exact type of skin-friendly salt to use in your water softener. Test your water hardness if you don't know it already. Very hard water supplies are best suited to softening with salt pellets, which are less prone to bridging and more efficient than water softener salt crystals. However, salt crystals tend to be more naturally produced, which often means that they're better for sensitive skin. Regardless of the type of salt you choose, you can save money by looking for bulk-buy deals that reduce the cost per pound of salt. Your Water Softener Type The type of water softener system you own will also affect the type of salt you can use. Most water softener salts for sensitive skin are suitable for all types of water softening systems. But if you have an all-in-one system that combines the brine tank and the resin tank in a single unit, it's best to use water softener pellets rather than crystals to prevent clogging. Check your user manual or contact the manufacturer to learn about the recommended type of salt for your water softener. Salt Purity & Type The purity of a salt product may be linked to its likelihood to cause skin irritation. Pure-grade sodium chloride is 100% NaCl, meaning that it contains no impurities or additives that could trigger sensitive skin. 📌 It's very rare to find a salt product that's 100% salt, so the closer the percentage, the better. Most water softener salts for sensitive skin are around 99.6% to 99.8% sodium, which is still very good. Salt purity is linked to salt type. If you're concerned about your skin health, we'd suggest avoiding rock salt, which is the least pure type of salt and doesn't dissolve well in a brine solution. Evaporated and solar salt are both good options. Solar salt is created through a natural process, so it's a generally safe option for sensitive skin, but it's not ideal for homes with very hard water. Evaporated salt tends to have the highest purity and dissolves very well in water, so the salt itself shouldn't trigger skin irritation. You might have to pay a bit more money for high-purity salt, but the overall benefits - including healthier skin, reduced brine tank cleaning and maintenance, and better dissolvability - make the extra cost worth it for most people.
