(joint propaganda for del Río and Vélez) When I asked my 58-year-old coworker who I have been keeping updated on the vintage men tournament if there was anyone she wanted me to submit on her behalf, almost immediately she said Dolores del Río, soon followed by her assigned rival by studios (due to being the first major Mexican actresses in Hollywood) Lupe Vélez - which del Río did not play into and Vélez did. First of all, she's on the money; that's how much of a treasure she is. She's beautiful in such a distinct way you need very few lines to draw her. More F/F and NB/F ships in Baldur's Gate 3 plz ty. More Shadowheart fic in general. More trans women in fic. I'm doing my best when I can, and I've got a few mutuals fighting the good fight as well, but we're fighting against a vampiric tide.

U. Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.

Shadowheart is cheating, so we can just assume she's looming over this list lmao. Some of these are "fandoms" in a loose sense lol.

Tavore Paran from Steven Erikson's Malazan series of books. This is the definition of a "grower" character. She is cold, demands a lot of her people, and the events of the books require her to be even colder and more distant from literally everyone except for her lover. She's one of the few lesbian characters in that series that I can think of off the top of my head. Her arc in the final few books is so good it makes me want to chew glass. That scene at the very, very end? Genuine tears. The only thing that moved me like that in Malazan was Beak.

Lupe dy Cazaril from Lois McMaster Bujold's Chalion series of books. He is genuinely one of the capital-K Kindest characters I've ever read in fiction. A broken man who returns from wartime slavery to find purpose in his life, being a genuine and warm person to everyone he meets that deserves it. A really satisfying character arc, and he's not really much of a fighter when we meet him which is always a great fantasy character pivot for a male protagonist.

April Ludgate from Parks and Recreation. She's sarcastic as fuck, a pretty full and fairly well-rounded character for a TV comedy, and extremely weird. I have like 800k words about her on AO3 lmao. Tons of thoughts about her that literally fill multiple books.

so playful and so fun! such a lovely exploration of various wlw dynamics

Tonks has slept with a lot of women, but none of them were like Rolanda. She's been butch for as long as she can remember, and has known she was gay since before starting Hogwarts, but butch-femme dynamics always made the most sense to her. There was a complementarity to having a pair of high heels beside her boots and her trousers crumpled on the floor alongside a skirt. Besides, Tonks likes her lovers to have enough hair to stroke and tangle her fingers in. (…) Tonks made a speciality out of seducing girls who claimed to be straight. There was an art to it: being a sympathetic ear for their boy troubles, making them laugh, and flirting just a little, gently, before pulling away. usually when i get crazy about something all i need is a couple good 75k+ fics to get it out of my system for a couple months…but aloto is SO new (and so small) there hasn’t even been enough time for those to even begin to appear. that combined with the fact we don’t know if it’ll get renewed or cancelled, which could be announced any day, deposits me firmly in Blorbo Limbo. uncharted waters. no idea how to escape. actually maybe when they finally announce the fate of the show. my only hope is [checks notes] amazon prime

Thought Conrad came out of nowhere? He was hinted at in Episode 7…

TLDR: Julia is a symbolism genius, S02E07 is an allegory for the relationships and identities of the main characters.

Like many viewers, I thought Episode 7 (the episode with Villainius) was a fun ‘filler’ episode, until I realised that there must be more to the character design than just aesthetics. My theory is that the ‘God Punisher’ game is an allegory for the relationships between the main players in the Celestial Spear experience and confirmation of the identity of the ‘mastermind’ behind everything. I got as far as working out the metaphor before the finale but not the identity of the master mind so I’ll take this as a theory win!

Let’s start with Villainius. 

Firstly, his helmet and shoulder pauldrons are very reminiscent of Felix’s/The Ticket Taker’s helmet. The main areas of interest here are the curves/horns and the one central eye. 

Secondly, he is referred to as the protagonist’s ‘childhood best friend’, just like Felix is to Eugene. 

Thirdly, he goes in between the protagonist and Liticus Guysus (more on him in a bit), just like Felix/TTT did between Eugene and Conrad. 

Finally, his name is Villainius the God Punisher. Up to the final episode, we thought The Ticket Taker was the villain and we were told that his main job was to punish those who misbehaved during the experience.

Now on to Liticus Guysus. This one is a little bit tricky, but now knowing that Conrad was behind everything I can see there was a hint to his identity all along! 

Liticus Guysus was the ‘evil’ advisor to Villainius, just as Conrad was instructing Felix/TTT. This gives us confirmation that to confirm the identity of the ‘mastermind’, we should have looked at Liticus Guysus. 

Now I was thrown by the red gown/armour as I assumed this referred to Harvey’s waistcoat, however, Liticus Guysus clearly has four stars on the front of his gown/armour. Where else do we see those exact four stars in that arrangement? On the very front of Conrad’s uniform. Liticus Guysus’ helmet also follows very similar lines and angles to the front of Conrad’s uniform.

theres two moments of vulnerability from jess and lupe that i never really see people put emphasis on. for jess, it’s when beverly gives her back the fines. we don’t talk enough about how her eyes fill up and she says “no ones ever done anything like this for me before.” jess, who screamed in the street and yelled THERES NO CRYING IN BASEBALL. she’s all rough and tumble, but that moment of almost helpless endearment gets me so much. another moment is when carson and greta swoop in to help her at charm school. the look on her FACE is devastating like she’s so insecure in that moment and about to lose it all. she’s such a well rounded character, a perfect blend of tenderness and snark.

now i really never see anyone talk about this lupe moment, and it’s mostly played for laughs in the show anyway. but when she thinks carson has found out about her in ep6, she’s like, genuinely scared. the way she jumps up all rabbit in the headlights with this terrified and helpless look on her face. like lupe is TOUGH. she’s confident. but she knows carson could take it all away from her. her voice is literally shaking at the start of the scene. this moment, and her conversation with esti, humanises her beyond “mean lesbian.” the DEPTH of lupe despite not being a main MAIN character is impressive.

You know what ALOTO has NONE of? The "Predatory Lesbian" stereotype.

Too often in wlw media there's this stereotype of a lesbian (usually butch) who has this bravado, "I could treat you better than your boyfriend could" or "I could turn you" type of energy. While some girls might see this as sexy and confident, I see it as predatory and uncalled for.

But in ALOTO, they avoid this stereotype perfectly! A few examples:

Jo and Maybelle We see from the very beginning that Jo is fawning over Maybelle, especially with her "What's your type?" "Blondes" response:

Is she being flirty? Yeah! But from then on, she's just as respectful and playful with Maybelle as she is with the rest of the girls, and never makes a move or does anything to make Maybelle uncomfortable. Maybelle never felt threatened by Jo, or even with the reality that she might be gay after all. In 1x07 she says, "And so what if she's queer?" And reminds Shirley that above all else, Jo is their friend.

2. Lupe & Carson 1x01 scene

In 1x01 when they're at the bar, Lupe and Carson are small-talking about running away from home. Lupe comments on her haircut, Carson says, "I don't think I look that different, though." Lupe gives her a knowing smile and backs away, saying "Eh...you kinda do."

In MY opinion, she's appreciating her haircut in a way that says, "You look kinda hot now," but is perfectly nice and doesn't do anything other than compliment her. (The fact that it just adds to Carson's Gay Awakening isn't Lupe's fault, LOL.)

3. Shirley's Perspective

Shirley is used as the traditional/fearful view of gay people, the "You're a lesbian and I'm a woman, therefore you MUST be in love with me!!" perspective. But the story is great about using the other characters to nonchalantly point out how dumb that is (her 1x07 convo with Maybelle, Carson's "That's not how it works" comment, lol). They don't make it into a huge political statement, they literally just look homophobia in the face and go "WHO TF CARES"

4. Honorable Mention: Carson & Greta

Carson & Greta is obviously a huge topic, but I just want to point out that I don't believe Greta was acting predatory or pursuing Carson in any way. She only acted on signals that she believed Carson was giving her, and was brave (stupid?) enough to act on them.

Even when Greta brings up Charlie in conversation, she's never bitter or disparaging about him, other than to say that he looks boring lol. No man-hating lesbians here, people!

ANYWAY, I just love that the girls have nothing but respect for each other as friends & teammates, and that their sexuality is only deemed a "threat" to external forces (except for Shirley, who again has an awesome self-realizing arc in that regard.)
