— People often underestimate the seriousness of your sudden shift of motivation, in this day and age; it’s uncommon to see anyone (especially younger people) read a book or have any interest in having goals whatsoever, but you’re different, you’ve set the curve, you’re the centre of attention and everyone should be like you especially when it comes to academics, parents are constantly asking you to teach their kids your way because of how effortless your work ethic and dedication to school seems.

— Whenever the teacher needs an example on how to do a math equation or what a well written and worded essay SHOULD look like they always hold up your assignments as an example, you are 100% the best example of what a student should be like an any generation but especially this one, all of the parents and guardians with the “brain rotted iPad babies” or “wasting their lives away because of technology addiction teenagers” beg you to tell them what your “secret is” but maybe you’re not even fully aware of your greatness or level of discipline and success.

— You have a very distinct and important morning routine that you do every day, whether your routine has 4-steps or 40-steps it’s almost like it’s been burned into your DNA to follow it daily, your routine is not optional, you have the most perfect sleep schedule it’s almost as perfect as you, but in case you need a late study night you wake up everyday well rested regardless of whether you slept a full 8-hours or not, your memory to do things is amazing, you have a better memory than most people in your classes, you remember everything that you hear, read, and write in terms of school, you remember how to spell everything, your handwriting is always neat and legible, you could basically rewrite the dictionary at this point, fun fact: most people in this generation aren’t fluent in English because of the lack of spelling and vocabulary (my teacher said this so it’s probably true), while the other people in your class are crying over the phone ban if you have you you’re perfectly fine without your phone for 6-8 hours a day, you’ve never had any issues writing stories or having original thoughts, you have an extremely expanded vocabulary and are an amazing writer, “You don’t use brain rot?? Nerd alert!” It’s surprising to hear someone only use quote “brain rot terms” ironically, whilst the rest of the world is having unintelligent conversations about skibidi toilet and whatnot you’re the complete opposite.

— You have no issues in and are the best at all forms of mathematics, geometry, algebra, calculus, arithmetic, trigonometry, number theory, statistics, set theory, topology, discrete mathematics, probability, combinatorics, numbers, mathematics analysis, analytical geometry, differential equations, applied mathematics, game theory, pure mathematics, linear algebra, numerical analysis, and matrix algebra, natural sciences, engineering, medicine, finance, computer science and social sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, earth sciences, zoology, ecology, microbiology, astrophysics, neuroscience, logic, ethics, psychology, philosophy, mechanics, and social sciences, morphology, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, psycholinguistic, linguistics, phonetics, historical linguistics, stylistics, and computational linguistics plus whatever other courses and classes that you have. [If this last part seems random it’s because it is, it’s copy and pasted from a personal sub I made a year ago for 11th grade :p]

My back up is a lawyer/judge in business because I am actually really good in social science subjects yk and business interests me a lot so yeaa

"the three body problem" by cixin liu

i started reading the english translation of "the three body problem" by cixin liu. i just finished the first part and i know that i like it so far.

as an ethnically han chinese person i feel more connected to this fictional recounting of the cultural revolution than i do to most literature i read in high school. for context, i never liked english class. i didn't willingly read literature on my own after 8th grade (2015), i didn't read *any* books after 11th grade, and i wouldn't pick up and complete a book until this year. (i'm excluding fanfiction from this lmao)

the fact that there's a whole scene dedicated to the politics and ulterior motives of academia and the content we learn in school was really... cool? it's valuable to question the source and motives of information but things become extremely ethically questionable once ideological differences start to step on people's human rights. but more than that, i never would have read anybody talk about science, academia, and teaching in any literature ive ever (been made to) read before.

the maturity difference between my 15-18 year old self and my 23 year old self definitely has some part to play, but this is still the kind of literature i think high school me would have appreciated. this is literature that would have gotten me to enjoy english class. this kind of chinese, stem-oriented content is really more personal to me compared to old american/european social issues.

like, my grandmother grew up during the cultural revolution. she had a soviet education and became a computer programmer. her daughter, my mom, is a programmer and data analyst. now, i'm aiming to become a mathematician.

i think, another reason why i feel so drawn to this book now that i'm actually reading it, is because i feel like i can actually learn about my family history through this. i only began reading this because my mom was really obsessed with the "three bodies" tv series - she watched the english and chinese versions, then went on to read the original chinese of "the three body problem." she said the book is better than the tv series and bought me the trilogy. so i guess i hope to connect with my mom and get more information about my own family history (at least, my maternal family history) through her.

so yesterday i went to this college workshop thingy through my school. my one friend couldn't come unfortunately. so the first half of this thing i spent awkward and alone. my workshop started at 11am. there was one other girl who was in my workshop and she said that she'll just stick with me since there's no one else from our school who's in that workshop (my friend was in it too but..). so that girl, i only knew her as my friend's friend from computer science. but after we left the workshop at around 1.30 we stuck together. she did have other people to talk to but she wasn't really close with them. we talked and talked and talked and walked around the very pretty campus of christ university and bought juice and chocolates at the canteen (didn't get lunch cuz the line was too long and we weren't willing to sweat in that heat, plus i had packed snacks). we probably walked to the auditorium block and back to the canteen repeatedly at least 4-5 times. we spent the rest of the time till 4pm sitting on the stairs on the second floor of the auditorium block. at first she spent her time texting/scrolling on her phone and i was reading my book while listening to music. then we somehow struck up conversation. you know that mood where you're somewhere out of the normal school routine and you're sort of tired after an "event" and you have really deep conversations? well that was the exact vibe. in my experience that happens during the end of the school year (like the last few months) but it happened yesterday afternoon/evening. we talked about future careers, and life, and she told me about her whole story with her boyfriend that she's been with since 9th grade (we're in 11th grade rn).

my point is, i was terrified and resigned myself to be awkward as hell the entire time because this is a new school with new classmates and i attached myself to one person who couldn't come, this unfamiliar situation resulted in albeit a bit of awkwardness at first but later a new friend.

now i'm not saying i'm glad that my friend couldn't come, she was really looking forward to this. i'm saying sometimes unfamiliar/uncomfortable situations (out of your comfort zone) can result in unexpectedly nice results.

Today I drew Mary Jackson! She was born on 9th of April in 1921. In Hampton,a Virgina. She graduated from highschool with the highest honors and she earned bachelor's degree in mathematics and physical science from Hampton University.Before she was recruited by NASA she taught math at an African American school in Calvert County, Maryland. There were unfortunately still segregations across the South. Then in 1943. she returned to Hampton where she became a bookkeeper at the National Catholic Community Center. In 1951. she was recruited by NASA,she started as a research mathematician at the Langley Research Center, she worked for Dorothy Vaughan in the segregated West Area Computing Section.In 1953. She accepted the offer to work for Kazimierz Czarneckl in the Supersonic Pressure Tunnel, but unfortunately she had to go undergo training to be promoted as an engineer. She needed to take graduate level courses in mathematics and physics. They offered her a night program by the University of Virginia which was held at the all white Hampton Highschool which is honestly f@#@ed up. But luckily she petitioned the City of Hampton to allow her to attend the classes and after she finished all her courses,she was finally promoted to an aerospace engineer in 1958. And she became NASA'S first black female engineer. She was awarded with:
