How I would bring Spyke into the 616 canon

So, for obvious reasons, Evan is the son of Ororo's dead aunt/sister of her father instead of her sister (the obvious reason is that Ororo doesn't have a sister in canon and I don't feel like retconing her one)

Evan's backstory is that Aisha Munroe (giving Ororo's aunt a name because she doesn't have one for some reason?) had him out of wedlock with a man she thought would stay with her, but dumped her when she got pregnant which made her fall into depression. She ended up giving him away without her parent's knowledge, but the guilt would catch up on her and she would eventually tell her family what she had done. Her parents forgave her, but she never forgave herself. Afterwards, Aisha would turn to a life of hollow pleasures, buying drugs and having another child out of wedlock (David Munroe Jr.). Then she got AIDS, and died.

Evan himself got lost in the foster care system, moving from house to house for being a "trouble-maker" (it was just racism). By highschool, Evan thought he had settled down with the Daniels household, a upper middle class black family that lived in a white neighborhood. Then he found out he was a mutant. He hid it for as long as he could, but when his adoptive parent's found out they kicked him out. By that time, Evan (who was 17 going on 18) decided to get out of America and to go live in the one place all mutants could feel safe: Genosha. Then

Yeah.

Ororo's family was one of the Genosha victims on the ressurection back burner and she never even knew it.

Fast forward to whateverthefuck the From the Ashes status quo is: Ororo has a nightmare where a ghost woman that looks like family begs her to save her son while choking her. The ghost then disappears, and Ashake shows up to tell Ororo that while this is a dream, her long lost cousin really is in danger and she needs to find him. Ororo asks for any hints and Ashake tells him his full name and that "he is lost in darkness".

Storm then flies over to her grandparents house and asks if she may have any lost family members. They are shocked at this information because Harriet (Storm's grandmother, her grandfather doesn't have a name) had a dream where she saw the ghost of her daughter beg her to save her son. Storm tells them it wasn't a dream and her grandparent's tell them the story of Aisha Munroe.

The three of them then go on a wild goose chase across the U.S., finding every foster home Evan's ever been to and eventually reaching the Daniels household. The Daniels tell them that they kicked him out for being a "demonic" mutant and Ororo has to leave so Harriet kicks their teeth in.

The trio headback to New York at a dead end because 1) they have no way of knowing if Evan's in the White Hot Room or not and 2) they have no Cerebro, no Peofessor X, no Jean Grey, no telepaths to help find Evan cuz their all busy. Storm then thinks back to what Ashake told her about Evan being "lost in darkness" and realizes that he was right under their noses the whole time: the Morlock tunnels.

Storm then goes underground alone to search for Evan and runs into Callisto who tells her that hey, someone who vaugely resembles you just showed up causing problems and you need to fix it!

This when Storm finally meets her cousin, Spyke

Spyke is ruling the Morlock tunnels with an Iron-fist and he blames accuses Storm and her mother for being the reason his life was so hard: if David Munroe had never left his real family to be with some african princess, he would still be alive and could have helped him mother when his grandparent's couldn't.

Storm begs Spyke that none of this is true but then she quickly realizes that something is very off about him. Spyke then challenges Storm to a fight to the death and Storm accepts, not to kill him but to try and subdue him, and that's when he winks at her.

Dun dun dun, he's posessed by Shadow King.

Storm then gets into a fight with Spyke and despite being massively more powerful than him, Storm is holding back and Spyke isn't which makes them almost evenly matched (and also they are in a tunnel so Storm can't use her full power without killing everyone anyway). Storm then makes the super hard decision to fry Spyke's brain in order to launch the Shadow King from his mind. After that Storm tries desperately to revive him and it looks like he won't wake up. In desperation, Storm remembers all the times she used magic and been called the avatar of life, and Storm chants "winds of life, I command you to save him from darkness!" and pumps magical wind into Spyke's lungs (I pulled this magic Storm stuff out my ass at the last minuet because I thought it was cool lol).

Nothing. Ororo cries for another family member she couldn't save. Then Spyke wakes up! Ororo then hugs him quickly, overjoyed that she was able to save him.

She then takes him back to the Munroe household where their grandparent's and David Jr. meet Evan and welcolm him to their family and let him know he will always have a place with them, as Evan Munroe.

Whatever happens next is anyone's guess :P

I was browsing my bookmarks, and found a good one that I didn't remember... and that turned out to be gone. I ran it through the Wayback Machine, and turns out the site has been down for a few years.

So, for my own sake and for posterity, I am posting it here, because it is useful information.

How to Go Cage Free

I have been researching the care of companion parrots ever since they captured my interest at age 18. Now at age 30, I run a small rescue out of my home that specializes in special needs birds, including parrots with behavioral issues and some with what would consider depression. I take pride and enjoyment out of offering a variety of fresh healthy foods daily, rotating toys a couple times a week, and spending one-on-one time with each of them. Lets put it this way: I never shower alone!

But even after doing all of that, I still felt that I needed to do more. They seemed happy, but something was still off. I visited the Foster Parrots, Ltd. sanctuary in 2013. At first, I thought it was going to be a sad experience; there are around 500 parrots in their care. But when I arrived to see all of the huge free-flight setups, I discovered how happy those birds actually were. It was then that it hit me: I need to find a way to eliminate as many cages as I can.

Even if they are born in captivity, parrots are wild at heart. They are not domesticated animals; their brains are not wired for life in a cage. Depending on the bird, some think of their cage as a safe place to go to sleep and eat, but others act out, get depressed or start feather picking from boredom. The huge, most important part to consider when thinking about going cage free is (pay attention): You must know your bird, and if you have a flock, you absolutely must know your flock.

It took about a year for my rescue, Hurlin’s Parrot Rescue, to convert to going mostly cage free, and we are still changing things weekly. Keep in mind that we have a flock of 20, and it is a slow process because I allowed everyone to adjust at their own pace. In the beginning, I built jungle gyms hanging from the ceiling out of untreated manila rope. I hung a variety of toys, and they used that as a supervised playtime area – supervised so I could learn who may get along with who, or who was going to be a issue with other birds.  As an important note: The large birds such as the Macaws are always kept in separate rooms, the Cockatoos in another separate room, and then the Amazons and African Greys in another.

The next step was to add large hanging perches made out of bird safe woods such as poplar, maple, untreated but de-barked pine, and Manzanita wood. It is important to hang all items with either stainless steel chain or plastic chain, depending on your birds (many will chew plastic chain).  I installed dishes directly to the stands and hung toys from the chain so they could reach them. Who got to try out their cage free setup first was based upon each individual’s behavior during the supervised playtime trials.  For example, I started with the more shy birds that would need more time to establish their territory, let them get situated, then moved on to the Timneh African Greys who had already established their flock. All the while, I routinely weighed each bird to make sure they were maintaining their weight and not losing due to any stress that may be associated with the big changes. My flock personally had no weight concerns during the transition, but better safe than sorry.

[missing image] When choosing your chain, also make sure that it is safe for little birdie feet. There are certain types known to trap toes.

Meanwhile in the Macaw room, I hung all five of their ceiling play stands in the same day and moved the cages out. Shower curtains were also hung on the walls to assist in their giant poops and food flinging. I did this transition more suddenly because everyone was already used to each other; most had been in the same room for over a year. There is one handicapped Green wing Macaw in this flock, Paco, whose feet were so badly injured that they are paralyzed. Even she is cage-free: I made a play stand that works for her from hula-hoops wrapped in fleece fabric. This works wonderfully, since she is unable to climb or perch, she would just sit in the bottom of a cage all day and crawl through any poop. I had to wash her blankets and bathe her daily. Now she just aims her butt off of the play stand and poops on the papers like everyone else, usually with a little happy dance afterwards!

During the transition, only a few problems occurred: My Scarlet Macaw, Booboo, who is normally a high-anxiety bundle of nerves and plucks herself accordingly, did pluck her feathers during the first week of the change. Aside from being more nervous than usual, she otherwise seemed happier than normal and in bright spirits, and even began to play with toys – something I never saw her do before. She has now fully adjusted and stopped plucking (until another hormone season comes around, most likely).

There are four birds who unfortunately can never be cage-free, but I found this out in the very beginning during supervised play times. One is our male Eclectus, who puts a lot of effort into chasing down the Amazons, and in turn his friend Velvet also cannot be cage free, because she will find a dark corner and get “nesty”, which is something that we avoid here. The Eclectus species also has different dietary needs. Another caged bird is Toby, our “hot” yellow-nape Amazon, but that was common sense and expected, as he is highly hormonal to the point of unpredictable attacks. And the fourth is Buddy the Red Lory for obvious reasons: he’s a completely different species with different dietary needs, and he is a little guy that could easily get hurt.

About three-to-four months after switching to cage free, there is one bird in particular, Spooky the Timneh African Grey, who began to claim to entire room as his territory and bully the other birds, so as a precaution he maintains a cage while we are not home, but the door is opened at all times when we are home. His setup may or may not go back to cage free again in the future. This is a great example of how flock dynamic can change over time, and you as the caretaker have to be prepared to make any changes that come with it. For me, that was regretfully adding one more cage to the bird room, making five cages total – not bad at all if you consider the flock of 20.

I often get the question of “what if a bird gets adopted, or needs to join the flock?” Similar steps will be taken if another bird is relinquished to our rescue and has the possibility of going cage free. Of course, we maintain our quarantine procedures; our quarantine room is an entirely separate room from any of the other bird rooms. Then, once we are positive the new bird is healthy, he or she is brought into the bird room in a cage to gage reactions from the flock and the newbie. From there, the new bird can move to an open-cage status, then possibly cage free. It is important to note that the majority of birds that are easily adoptable into approved homes will not transition to our cage-free flock. This will avoid stress on them if they find a new family, and it will prevent stress on our own flock. With every bird that comes and goes, the flock is affected and the dynamic changes. We take the time to get to know each bird before making any decisions – as much time as it takes. It is our responsibility to do what is in the individual’s best interest, and for our existing flock.

As for maintaining the cage free setup, new toys, swings, boings and other perches are hung and changed out regularly to keep everyone busy. Most of the birds are flighted and will explore the room, but they always return to their “safe spot” on their own play stands for food, water or sleep (with the exception of a few that prefer sleeping up on the ropes).

I wish that I could tell everyone that eliminating cages was all sunshine and rainbows – a piece of cake – but it takes a lot of thought and even more work! It may not be for every flock, and I can’t make that decision for you because only you can truly know your birds. Only you know what your setup is capable of and what is realistic for you.

What I can say is that I have no regrets. I have never seen my birds happier. The sparkle in their eyes shines brighter; they chatter more and interact with each other more, even just vocally from across the room. The vibe in the room is much more lively and happy, and I no longer feel the guilt of seeing so many cages lined up around the walls like little jail cells.  A few birds in particular have completely turned around: for example, Ariel, a bird who was locked in a cage for ten years and very difficult to handle due to her mood swings (I self-diagnosed her as being bipolar with possible depression), now constantly asks for me to hold her and accepts preening, almost to the point of cuddling. The first time she did this is a moment I will never forget; it was the kind of moment that reminds a rescuer why they rescue in the first place. Tears of joy filled my eyes. Another change happened in my African Greys, Shelby and Remy. With the cage-free setup they go wherever they please, and that often involves following me wherever I am in the house, which is something I love. They fly back down to their rooms when they decide it is bedtime. Their confidence has become higher from having that independence.

Another perk for me personally, aside from the happy aura radiating throughout my bird rooms, is that this setup is very low maintenance compared to having cages. I spend less time scrubbing cages bars and bottom grates, which means I can enjoy more time interacting with the flock. What used to take a full day to clean now only takes a couple of hours – and that is a full on OCD bird room scrub down. We have leftover rolls of 48” wide paper donated by our local newspaper distributor. The paper is cut into large sections to completely cover the floors in each room. Smaller sections are laid over the main paper for the extra poopy spots for ease of changing it, and it makes the larger portion last longer. I sweep daily, and I wipe the walls and change papers in their entirety a couple times per week.

I still continue to make changes to the bird rooms, and this will be an ongoing thing. Another large phase that will take place in spring/early summer 2016 is switching out all of the wood trim for tile or stainless – whichever I find the most cost effective (or the least ugly). Lucky for the flock, I didn’t care for the wood trim we had in those rooms, anyway!

Main Points for going cage free:

Know your birds.

Be patient and observant.

Weigh your birds regularly to make sure they are maintaining weight and health.

Be prepared to make changes as flock dynamics change.

Adjust with the flock; you are part of it.

You better not care about your trim or possible furniture in the room, or have plans to change to un-munchable trim, like tile.

Keep them busy by changing out perches, toys and foraging activities. It’s like having a caged setup, but on a larger scale with no bars, so you have to get creative.

Enjoy watching your flock be a flock, and take pride in being part of it.

Fusataro doesn't strike me as some in-your-face king type, no pride, no big roar, but can definitely kill a black caiman with a single bite to the skull. Also Black Jaguars are just badass and regal and I love them and I love Fusataro.

Kei - Rat!

This is an unsurprising one, but it's for more than just his teeth. He cares about his family, he's skittish, but he's not defenseless. I imagine him as a little bit pack-rat like, hoarding little things that might be useful in the future. Rats are very social animals that get depressed alone and I feel like he's a poor wet rat who's stuck in a cage with an aggressive smaller male(Vice) but he deals with it because the alternative is being alone.

Lady Gekko/Rune - Luna Moth/Praying Mantis

Listen I think my reasons for this are obvious. Luna Moth-Moon-Jealousy it fits. BUT ALSO. Luna Moths, once they mature, find love and then die. Which. Yeah. That tracks. And female Praying Mantises are fucking bad ass bugs with a reputation for killing their mates. I don't think I have to explain more than that.

Hana - Honey Badger

Okay I'm writing out my thoughts process as I decide because usually I associate her with a bear cub but I'm avoiding repeating animals and a bear is Eater's. Maybe a Tasmanian Devil but that feels... Almost too easy, I guess? Or maybe she gets the Honey Badger. Yeeee. Cause maybe as she grows her two big role models are probably Mizho and Akitsu and I can absolutely see her going batshit when she hits their age.

Akira - Show-Line Dog, probably something like a Doberman

This one is kinda rough, because I definitely associate him with a young male lion, one who doesn't have a pride yet but is looking to take one over. BUT... Idk if Orghullo's animal is a lion or a foo dog so I'm playing it safe. He's definitely an intelligent animal, and not a dog who's just for looks. He definitely can use his teeth if he has to.

Sumako - Ferret

Domestic, cute, cuddly, wants to hoard her favorite people to herself. But do not forget she is a carnivore and a weasel and ferrets thrive on a whole-prey diet and watching one devour a frozen-thawed mouse is an experience I'll never forget. I want one so bad.

Kia has laid claim on the red fox, but I feel like Matsumoto, especially following her sequence with Jun, is a lot more cunning than she lets on. She's meticulous and careful, though also skittish and would rather run than confront a larger threat.

Highest K:D Ratio of any wild cat. Extremely protective of their family. Not to be under estimated for their size. Sharp witted, deadly, and smol.

Pretty legs Tall, diligent for danger, not quite as deadly as they seem but still a predator.

Okay, terrible jokes aside, Donkeys and their ilk are livestock guards against canine predators like coyotes and wolves and they're merciless and stubborn as hell when they have a target. They can be loving and mischievous with their owners.

Listen I'm a dog trainer for a living and there is no animal on this planet that fits this man more than this very specific dog breed. Calm, focused, very smart, literally the perfect first-time-owner dog in my opinion. Easy going, forgiving, would give you the world if they could.

What Kind of Witch?

 I was talking to a friend yesterday, who is a witch and practices Wicca, they asked me what kind of witchcraft or what kind of witch am I going to be. They explained that their are white witches and black witches. Witches that only do good withcraft like protection and healings and other witches that do curses and hexes. Or more basically witches that cast spells that benefit others or spells that harm others.

I have been doing some studying  and have come to the conclusion that I am a grey witch.  A witch that will focus more on helping others by casting protectuons spells and healing spells but at the same time. If it needs to be done I would not shy from doing a containment spell or maybe even using a curse to stop a bad person. 

I do not want to limit myself. I want to explore the full range of the craft. I also don't want to just limit myself. Some people use European practices while others use South American, Asian or African traditions. I want to embrace a full range of magickal traditions. 

I have also neen looking at some of the dieties. Most of the common ones seem to be very gender and hetronormative. From my experience and from my viewpoint I want to focus more on queer and transgender dieties in my practice of witchcraft. 

Rhe use of magic and Witchcraft has completely transformed my life from the depression and dispair of a few days ago to excitement and calmness I am not feeling.

I wush there was a may I could thank the young lady from the crystal store I went to over weekend that totally transformed my life over night.

Greatest Songs Ever - Part 25 (250 Songs Deep)

It's the big 2-5! There's no big celebration this time around, but you WILL find, at the bottom of this post, the long-awaited (lol) Spotify playlist of the ongoing Greatest Songs Ever. Big ups to my wife for letting me put it on her account.

That's enough pre-amble let's get down to business.

1983 "If This Is It" - Huey Lewis & The News

Unless I am misunderstanding history, there was a short time when Huey Lewis was one of the coolest people on the planet. In 2024, I cannot fathom it, but I guess the standards for "cool" are always changing. "If This Is It" is kind of an underdog in Lewis' catalog. It's not his biggest hit and isn't associated with a movie, but pound for pound I'd say it's the best I've heard from him. Its walking bassline and doo-wop vibe, have an undeniably lounge sound. Even the tongue-in-cheek approach to a break-up keeps the mood light-hearted and cute. My favorite parts are how Lewis plays with the delivery of "You better let me know/go". Jumping from on the beat to a half beat then back. The song keeps you on your feet.

2019 "Cruel Summer" - Taylor Swift

The second Swift song to make this list had an odd journey to hit-dom. It was an immediate stand-out on her 2019 Lover album, and an assumed single, yet oddly it didn't get an immediate wide radio release. Then the pandemic hit and Swift entered another era and "Cruel Summer" didn't get the attention it deserved. When the Eras Tour rolled around in 2023, the song had a new breath of life and a proper radio release. Taylor Swift is at her best when her poetry melts seamlessly into a melody. I could have hours of discussions on how this has affected her grander body of work, but for our purposes today, "Cruel Summer" is the perfect mixture of her perfectly crafted poetry set to a punchy infectious tune.

1971 "Sunshine" - Jonathan Edwards

It's easy to interpret "Sunshine" as a classic conservative anthem. With lines like "He can't even run his own life, I'll be damned if he'll run mine" and "When he tells me I better get in line, I can't hear what he's saying." the message of the song can be interpreted as heavy handed. However, removed from the post-60s anti-flower-children idea and seen with a wider angle lens, "Sunshine" is about taking control of your life and doing what's necessary to get through the tough times. It can even be heard as a man coping with depression. The beauty of the song is its simplicity and the craft of the lyrics. Once that has its hooks in you, you can find whatever meaning you want in the lyrics.

1990 "Hold On" - Wilson Phillips

1990's premiere nepo-baby group Wilson Phillips never really lived up to the hype of this first single, but like "Take On Me" or "Smells Like Teen Spirit," "Hold On" is an aggressive snap-shot of a very specific and precious moment in time. 2 years earlier it would have been too boring, 2 years later, not edgy enough or too positive. "Hold On" is also a favorite Hollywood needle drop. It works as both a sincere "I love this song" kind of drop and an ironic "this is funny because it's corny" kind of scene. Rarely does a song with such a positive angle become such a huge hit.

1973 "Drift Away" - Dobie Gray

In it's 54 year history "Drift Away" has become somewhat of an American Standard. Dozens have covered it and the odds you'll hear it at your local bar by a thrown-together blues-rock band are pretty high. Arguably though, the most famous version of "Drift Away" is Dobie Gray's 1973 recording. Is it Rock N Roll, is it Country, is it R&B? It's kind of all three and while every corner of American music tells a piece of the story, "Drift Away" lives in the space between and represents all American music. It's only compounded the fact that Grey was African-American.

2002 "Foolish" - Ashanti

It pains me to include a song whose first line is a whisper of "Murder Inc." from what sounds like Ja Rule ... but whatever. I forgot this song existed for a very long time, but once I heard that piano hook again, I knew it was a contender for this list. After my usual research, I wasn't surprised to find it was a sample from an old Debarge song, which had previously been used by Biggie. Luckily "Foolish" has more than one trick up its sleeve. The chorus is the scientific definition of an earworm and Ashanti's airy voice is perfect for the subtle pop arraignment.

1969 "Kick Out the Jams" - MC5

"KICK OUT THE JAMS, MOTHA-FUCKA!" Punk music before punk was punk, MC5's "Kick Out the Jams" seems unassuming at first listen, but the song and the band both would influence generations of punk, rock and metal. Recorded live, this track has a rawkus energy to it and the bridge's guitar solo literally sounds like a band destroying their equipment. Rob Tyner's vocals straining to hit notes and keep tempo only adds to the proto-punk attitude so many would fall in love with.

1966 "You Can't Hurry Love" - The Supremes

Another Motown classic hits the list! I really don't have much to say specifically about "You Can't Hurry Love." I love the bass-heavy instrumentation working opposite the super-high vocals of Diana Ross and crew. The other instruments feel like faint suggestions in the background. These sounds coming from Hitsville became a template for artists to reference for decades. This track is such a bold prototype, its tendrils can still be heard in modern music.

2017 "Hoodie" - Hey Violet

"Hoodie" has been on deck for 3-5 lists and finally lands here. Hey Violet hovered in the Next Big Thing category for about 5 years in the late teens. Basically, until they weren't able to release 2-3 solid pop-punk albums in that time. Just last month they released their "last" album and out of their career they managed to record a dozen or so solid tracks and one absolute classic in "Hoodie". When it was released as a single it had a feature from rappers Ayo & Teo. Like many post-release features, it was attention-grabby and superfluous. A young woman clinging to the busted-up Hoodie of a past lover is a universal enough concept that this song should have been massive, but I guess its inclusion here will have to do.

1992 "End of the Road" - Boyz II Men

Everything about "End of the Road" is wonderful. The soulful silky vocals of Boyz II Men, the super-serious lyrical content, the big climactic chorus, and even the cheesy spoken-word bass vocal breakdowns all paint a vivid picture of late 80s-90s dude-fronted R&B. The energy of this song is exactly the energy of Andy Samburg and Justin Timberlake's characters in "Dick In a Box." I didn't mean to include 2 motown produced tracks this time, but I do not regret it. It's catchy and sad and hopeful and sultry. I am sure though, that every kid in the 90s conceived during "End of the Road" now comes from a broken home, lol.
