Sex-linked barring Part 1!

This is the gene that is responsible for black sexlinks. It is sexlinked incomplete dominant.

b+ is the non-barring allele

B is the barring allele

Barring interrupts pigment production, creating bars of almost no pigment and bars of almost saturated pigment. Barring shows up best on a black base. This will allow for almost black and almost white bars. Other colors show good barring as well, but in some, it is very indistinct. Wheaten barred hen feathers and the blue barred feathers have especially blurry barring.

Because barring is on the sex chromosome, females can only inherit one barring allele. This would make them hemizygous for barring.

B/-: cuckoo d'Anvers female named Margaret

Here is a male with only one copy of barring. Since he had no selection in his background, he has some solid black feathers (however, even the best barred birds can have black feathers, they simply remove them for show). As you can see, he is roughly the same color as the hen above.

B/b+: Single barred d'Anvers male (His name was Stripes!)

With two copies of the barring gene, males will have more white bars, giving them a much lighter appearance.

B/B: double barred DominiquexD'Anvers cross (cage bars not always included)

Some of you might point out that all of the birds I just posted were cuckoo, not barred. It is true that barring as defined by the Standard of Perfection has much cleaner and more even bars while cuckoo is more rough around the edges.

An exhibition barred Plymouth Rock would be barred while a hatchery "barred Rock" would actually be cuckoo.

Why is this? The slow feathering gene, and also selection for better barring.

The "slow-feathering gene" is a sex-linked mutation that causes a bird to feather in more slowly.

Exhibition barred Plymouth Rocks have the slow feathering gene. I should know. I had one and his feathers came in slooowly. (Sadly, I lost whatever pictures I had of him.) This allows the bars to come in evenly.

Hatchery "Barred Rocks", Dominiques, d'Anvers, and most other breeds have the fast feathering gene. So their bars look like a rush job. I'll explain slow and fast feathering at a later date.

However, "barred" and "cuckoo" from a genetics standpoint are both barred. For simplicity's sake, I'm going to call them both barred.

Anyway, a neat thing about sex-linked barring is that if you have a true-breeding flock of B/- females and B/B males, you can sex them based on color.

All the dark chicks with white spots on their heads are barred. Large, irregular white spots indicate male chicks. Small, even white spots indicate female chicks. And once their feathers come in, the difference between homozygous double-barred males and hemizygous single-barred females is even more obvious. However, there is a lot of variation in barring. Some lines are lighter and some lines are darker. Since these barred chicks have a mixed heritage, even though they are homozygous and hemizygous, all of the chicks look very different and I probably couldn't reliably sex them.

On certain base colors, barring can be used to create autosexing chicks, a topic that definitely deserves a post of its own.

I also never got to sex-link crosses. I will have to make a part 2, maybe even a part 3!

WIBTA for taking advantage of my boss’ possible manic episode?

I know this already sounds bad but hear me out.

So I (30M) am the sole employee of this guy (62M) who’s honestly just a miserable boss and an even more miserable person. It sucks so bad working for him—the pay is horrendous, he’s verbally abusive, and the working conditions are awful (in the winter I literally have to stay bundled up the whole work day because he refuses to put the heat on in the office). He wouldn’t even give me holidays off if it wasn’t for the fact that there’s basically nothing to do those days because everywhere else is closed. I’m almost positive he unironically thinks poor people should die if they can’t work. His nephew (aka his only living relative and just the nicest guy) came by yesterday to invite him to Christmas dinner and he told him he’d see him in hell.

I cannot stress this enough—it’s BAD. I’d quit, but it’s been hard finding a better job and I’ve got four kids at home, including one with special needs.

Anyway, so here’s where I’m wondering if I’d be the asshole. Today was Christmas Day and he showed up at my house out of nowhere (huge red flag, I know). At first I thought he’d forgotten I had the day off and he was here to chew me out, which was worrying enough, but then his whole demeanor changed and he was super happy and excited and talking about how he was going to raise my salary. He even mentioned possibly making me a partner in the firm.

Now if that was it, I’d feel a little weird about the suddenness of it but it’d be fine. I’m not going to complain about having more money to feed my family. But then he started talking about how he wanted to pay our mortgage off. He talked about wanting to pay for our son to get the very expensive medical care that’s probably going to save his life. He mentioned at one point that he was going to be donating a huge amount of money to charity too—I knew he was rich but it staggered me. All this from a guy who doesn’t (didn’t?) even want to turn on the heat or the lights because it costs too much money.

It was such a sudden and drastic change that happened very literally overnight and now I’m kind of concerned he’s having a manic episode or something. I really, really want to accept his sudden generosity (I probably will; my wife is all for it and thinks he owes it to us), and I would love to believe that he’s truly had a sudden change of heart (an actual Christmas miracle lol) but I’m just worried about the possible consequences of accepting huge financial gifts like this from someone who I believe might be experiencing some kind of break from reality. Even if there’s nothing legally wrong with it, I’m worried about the ethics of it.

TLDR, my asshole boss might be in the middle of a mental breakdown. WIBTA if I accepted his offer to pay off my mortgage and my son’s medical expenses?

The tale of Zealand AKA three sex-linked genes explained in one post

Now that you know of three of the four most common sex-linked chicken genes, let me tell you a tale...

At sunset one August night, a couple Dominique hens, an Australorp hen, and a Faverolles hen were plotting. They hatched a plan, hoping to hatch eggs. Sneaking into a chick delivery box with fake straw, seeming much like a nesting box, they layed their eggs. Zealand decided to take it under herself to hatch these chicks. Weeks passed by. Somehow, none of my family had noticed she was missing every night, we had just assumed she wasn't missing at all, because we saw her every day when she came out. For five days we were on vacation, and since we locked the coop while we were gone, Zealand had to forage for herself. Four days before the hatch of the eggs, I FINALLY noticed she didn't come in at night. It took two days of spying on her to discover where her nest was, because she would loiter for hours, almost making me think she didn't have a nest, but she kept puffing herself up like a broody. I candled her eggs, and they looked old, so I didn't think they would hatch. But they did, over the course of a week. My family got rid of most of the chicks, because of them being crossbred, but we kept a few, including one that had the down color of a quail d'Anver, since I wanted to study its parentage. It turned out to be Starling, one of the most beautiful hens on the farm.

Starling was rather special, because her parentage means she was a three-way sexlink.

Her father was a blue wheaten Ameraucana. Let's ignore the blue part though. He had slate shanks. This is his genotype, the parts that are relevant anyway: e^Wh/e^Whml+/ml+s+/s+b+/b+id+/id+

These are the three sexlinked genes he had: s+/s+ gold, b+/b+ non-barred, and id+/id+ dermal melanin.

Her mother was Zealand, a Dominique bantam. Her coloring was barred. She had yellow shanks. Here is her genotype:

E/EMl/MlS/-B/-Id/-

These are the three sex-linked genes she had S/- silver, B/- barred, and Id/- dermal melanin inhibitor.

Now here is Starling.

Her genotype was E/e^WhMl/ml+s+/-b+/-id+/-

She inherited her three sexlinked genes from her father: s+/- gold, b+/- non-barred, and id+/- dermal melanin.

She also inherited a Ml Melanotic allele and an E allele from her mother, which interacted with the id+ gene to give her a dark purpley colored face and deep brown eyes.

Now, if she had a hypothetical brother, he would look very different.

He would be: E/e^WhMl/ml+S/s+B/b+Id/id+

He inherits three recessive sexlink alleles from his father and the three dominant sexlink alleles from his mother.

His sexlinked genes are silver/gold (appearing silver as a chick and yellowish as an adult) S/s+, barred B/b+, and dermal inhibitor Id/id+

Since his mother is the one with the dominant genes, you get sex-links!

However, if you crossed a Dominque male with a wheaten Ameraucana female, you wouldn't get sexlinks!

Both offspring would recieve the dominant sexlinked alleles from their father so they would both have white shanks, red combs, orange eyes, one copy of barring, and silver. The only difference would be that the males would recieve a copy of gold from their mothers so they would have a yellowish cast.

Imagine accidentally walking into a military dive bar by yourself, not knowing that the customer base was mainly military folk, and just kind of rolling with it

Imagine you dressed cute, your hair was done, and it had been a long week- you deserved a good ol' night on the town, damnit, and you didn't want to pay another Uber to go to another bar

Imagine you making your way up to the bar to order your first drink of the night and when you order a simple cocktail, the bar goes quiet for a split second because who orders a cocktail in this place?

Imagine not knowing that since the second you walked in that door, you've had eyes on you. Of course you've had eyes on you since you walked in, but one pair in particular stayed glued to your form as you walked through the bar

Imagine looking around after getting your drink from the bartender to see where you'd try to sit for a bit to sip on your drink

Imagine there being an empty table near the far end of the bar that you decide to claim as your own as you continued to scope out the bar patrons

Imagine finally locking eyes with the one man that has had his eye on you since the minute you walked in the door

Imagine freezing as you look into his eyes from across the bar, suddenly aware that this huge, masked military man had been looking right at you

Imagine deciding after a second fuck it and you just gave him a smile and a small wave before sipping your drink. After all, he had been looking at you first, right?

Imagine seeing him look away briefly after your wave and you finally turn to look around the bar again, idly sipping at your drink

Imagine not even a minute later, that very same man is now standing right next to you- how the hell did he get there so fast-? And so quietly-?

Imagine the silence that ensues, neither one of you wanting to say the first word (well, it was either not wanting or not knowing what to say)

Imagine the first thing you speak to Simon 'Ghost' Riley, unknowing who he is or what his reputation was, being, "So, uh... Come here often...?"

Imagine that really being your best line for this strange man

Imagine Ghost letting out a soft grunt as he nodded, "Often enough. Never seen you here before."

Imagine you giving him another smile, this one softer and more genuine as you reply, "I didn't realize this was so... Military oriented. Am I even allowed to be here?"

Imagine hearing a small huff from the man, his eyes indiscernible as he says, "Course you're allowed. I'd like to see them try to kick a bird like you out."

Imagine giggling softly, "A bird like me? What's that supposed to mean?"

Imagine all the while, Simon 'Ghost' Riley's teammates are still sitting at the bar, watching this all go down like it was a soap opera. It was, wasn't it? Their Lieutenant going out of his way to flirt with the little bird who accidentally wandered into a military-centric dive and still ordered the little cocktail you liked.
