yet another reason why queer romance in media that is very subtle or more queer-coding than actual explicit rep is so much more compelling than the wealth of straight stories that are out there is bc I think a lot of romance writers forget that you have to like. show not tell. and imply things. and if you hustle things along and put two characters together for the sake of it instead of really working to build their relationship and show how well they work with each other it's not really going to be as interesting to people. and for some reason, a staggering amount of people do not know how to write romance properly so you get a very bland forced dynamic that either feels like an afterthought (he's a boy and she's a girl, hey they could be together because that's what happens!) or the only thing that matters about their characters (see her? she's the Love Interest. that is all she's there for)

however if you're being censored and you literally can't make your characters say "I love you" or kiss or maybe even hold hands you're going to have to come up with more creative ways to tell your audience that they're in love and that usually results in the most poetic beautiful stuff you've ever seen that's SO much more interesting than two characters who make eye contact and go into the slow-mo rose petals scene that's basically screaming at you "hey look at these two. they're in love. you're supposed to be invested in their relationship now. do you get it?" eye contact held for slightly too long in an emotional scene is more compelling. a hand very lightly touching their back is WAY more compelling.

and might I add this is not even impossible to achieve with uncensored straight romances at all like Pride & Prejudice is wildly popular for this exact reason. how many times have I seen people going insane over the hand flex scene. they didn't even kiss in that movie unless you count the extended ending. and everyone loves it. because it's done RIGHT.

tldr; romance is hard to write and you have to put in the effort if you want people to care about your ship. now go forth and imply something

QUICK EDIT TO ADD ALSO when things are more subtle that gives people more space to interpret the dynamic as whatever they want. something might be subtle because that's all they're allowed to show, but something might be subtle because that literally what it's supposed to be. as an aroace person I personally see a LOT of queerplatonic vibes from more subtly played relationships and it's so incredibly exciting and heartwarming for me. and that's a whole new realm of relationship that I think should also be given more attention

Last but not least! I know Ophilia has a lot of queer ™️ coded travel banters. I just. I just think she prefers boys, or that she can be homoromantic at most. It just feels right to see him as aroace when he likes to tease Crick and basically everyone so much, I think it makes a nice, funny contrast

We stan another bisexual king. His story is full of men and what does he do? He asks if they want him to take off his shirt. That’s kinda queer if you ask me! But I also like some of his banters with Throné and Agnea and I find both pairings very cute.

Now this was a hard one because of the (quite annoying) childish characterization they gave Ochette in the game. She only seems to love jerky but I know she’s capable of loving others romantically.

This girl likes boys to me! Might be because of her cute flirt with Hikari in the game, but she doesn’t strikes me as someone who’s interested in girls. I really liked her moments with Gus and Gil. After all there’s already a lesbian power couple in her story and it’s Dolcinaea and Veronica /j

Now I had a hard time with Throné but the main reason why I think she’d only be capable of loving girls is the conflicting relationships she has with male figures in her life. She’s got Father. She’s got Pirro and Scaracci. She’s got Claude who did that. Everytime she tried to trust the men in her life it went bad. So I think that while she can still be attracted to men, her heart only trusts girls

Hikari - Straight

Same as Agnea basically. He doesn’t really give me a reason in his story to believe he also likes boys

So I've started reading Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know and I thought it might be fun to periodically update this blog with some of my reactions as I read it.

Here are my thoughts on chapters 1 - 3.

Chapter 1

GREAT way to open a story. "Oh no, everyone thinks our lord is locked away inventing a new cultivation path but really he's locked himself up with a smutty romance novel and I don't know what to tell everyone" is just an amazing hook.

Ok, so his Left Protector is definitely the love interest. Can already tell Yin Hanjiang is gonna be a little bit of a freak. I do love a loyal knight/ prince dynamic.

So this 'romance' book is a possible future timeline, but it sucked so much somehow he got sent this book and told to 'do better this time'? 😂

Lmao the reviews at the end. God I also would hate that book so fucking much. Idk Baili Qingmiao yet but she deserves to be a cold uncaring bitch. Let her be a calamity this time please.

Brooklynn: Of course she has blue hair and pronouns. Transfem, started identifying as demigirl after jwcc (they/she/he pronouns). Aromantic bisexual, struggled a lot with coming to terms with her aromanticism, especially after having been in a romantic relationship for six very important years of her life; got in a queerplatonic relationship with Darius a while after jwct.

Sammy: Trans woman, came out when she was 12 (she/they pronouns). Lesbian and in a happy relationship with Yaz (let me be delusional)

Ben: Transmasc, after the island they realized they were nonbinary as well (he/they pronouns). He's unlabeled as far as sexuality goes: he's very comfortable using the trans and nonbinary labels, but that's it. Also probably somewhere on the ace spectrum but who knows.

Yasmina: She doesn't give gender non-conforming vibes to me so she's cis (she/her pronouns). Demiromantic bisexual: Esther Stone was how she first questioned if she was actually straight and then Sammy was her first (and only) gay crush and relationship. Still happily dating Sammy (shh)

Kenji: Bisexual; knew he liked boys and girls from a young age but that his dad wouldn't allow it, and then when he wasn't under his control anymore he was dating Brooklynn anyway. Lowkey forgot about it until he tried dating again as an adult. He's probably genderqueer in some way but hasn't given himself time to think about that (he/him pronouns)

my notps: bodhi/ridoc and violet/cat

I'm going to address Violet/Cat first. I think it's well known I think Cat is an absolute piece of work and the fandom give her too much credit. I mean, don't even start me, it's been one of my biggest bug bears lately. Do not accuse fanfic writers of demonising her, she came that way.

In regards to the pairing though...it could work. Would I personally read it? Probably not, but I think if given a really good redemption arc—one better than *checks notes* finding a boyfriend—I could see it. Of course, that would all be predicated on Xaden being idk dead or something, sooooo yeah.

Bodoc...oh god the bodoc. I'm signing my own death warrant here, I swear.

I'm going to hold everyone's hand when I say this...the fandom practically created the Bodhi they adore. He has very little substance in the book. Bodhi is this fandom's Darcy Lewis. We know next to nothing about him and honestly, half of what we do know, we know from Rebecca's interviews and not the series itself.

Do I like him? Yes! But it's kind of weird to me that everyone insists we know more about him than say...Rhiannon. It's almost like he's got a cult following. He's the One Direction of this fandom and I am terrified to say it kind of kills the vibe for me. He's definitely the one you don't want to admit you're not vibing with out loud, because people will come for you...but here I am, doing it for you, anon!

I sound like a broken record but this series has such a large ensemble cast that you genuinely don't get that much background or substance...for anyone. We get his general demeanor and attitude, enough to know what he's like, but what he's thinking? What he cares about? All guesswork. He's shippable with almost everybody because he's a fun little template you can superimpose however you like.

Ridoc has more depth, in my opinon, after Onyx Storm, and everything about him is easy. To me, Ridoc is the fandom bicycle—shippable with practically everyone. There are opportunities for some really fun romance no matter who you put him with.

Which brings me to yes, I would read bodoc, though personally...I find it a little boring most of the time. I think their affinity as a ship lies in both of them feeling like they're not enough—that angst gives you some juicy bonding material, but without it...they're a bit mundane?

I enjoy it in The Underpants Heist because I think Yanny has a good thing going with grief and jealousy and all these other things that make it compelling (though I'm not up to date on it right now), but in other works it can just seem...boring? Background? Filler-esque? And I'm saying that as someone who's written it!

I think the fandom just defaults to it now as the most popular pairing for each of them, but that doesn't make it compelling. There are definitely instances where I think oof, it would have been more interesting to pair him with [character], you know? Or to make him aroace—I find aroace Bodhi very compelling!

I did proudly suggest Ridoc/Sawyer for dead on arrival, because I thought it would be fun, which is how it's meant to be!

Ultimately, no shade to those who ship it—as I said, I've written them as a side-pairing myself!—it's just not the default for me, I suppose. I enjoy it when it's fun though! 🖤

LMAO well "bad universe smallidarity" is how I interpret smallidarity personally. I know my following has been curated a lot by this point but I still get anxious to comment on it out in the open, so I'm just gonna: This is about characters. It's about characters. Hello I'm talking about characters and this says absolutely nothing about any relationships present in the real world and I wouldn't have it any other way than it is now. This is about characters and I am a big fucking fan of Jizzie, don't even doubt me (said in general, not to you lol)

Anyway. I made a long post about this before but it's a little bit cringe so I'm gonna try to sum my thoughts up again: I love analysing Joel's freak behavior and to me his character reads as homophobic but in a deeply closeted way. His relationship with Lizzie is extremely cute but I get more aroace vibes from it than anything honestly. Their characters would have gotten together because, it made sense to. "Hey we like each other, might as well get married" and good for them, but although they are cute and every now and then proclaim their love, it feels more like an obligatory sentiment to make to me, their characters within the Life series and other SMPs I've watched with them just don't strike me as a couple if you take away the specific terms they use that confirm it. Like honest to god someone can try and make a compilation of that and I'm willing to bet that the compilation of him and Jimmy being weird would be at least comparable in length. And frankly I don't think Lizzie gives much of a fuck anyway

Joel's treated Jimmy very undesirably in the past, main culprit being ESMP2, until out of nowhere he chooses to end their rivalry and proclaim them two best friends instead, which Jimmy very easily goes along with. This very sudden change in their relationship being enforced by Joel makes me think he came to some revelation and had a good think about it. That's a lie, he's bad at that, he probably had a meltdown instead and didn't know how to fix things other than to go tell Jimmy "hey lets be friends now and um impose new law". This is where he contributed to the Jimmy ecosystem (AKA the harmful environment and people that enforce the idea that Jimmy is inherently lesser than them) the most and then abruptly stopped. Instances of him belittling Jimmy one way or another still happen afterward but it really has changed and become both more lenient and less frequent. What has been a constant however is the weirdass homoerotic behavior

This since and before ESMP2, but it really gives vibes of someone in love but neglecting to acknowledge it and/or combating those feelings with vocal disapproval of any intimacy that could be inferred. He has a wife after all, in fact, he'll remind you every chance he gets. Joel has no problem indulging in and joking about more sexual approaches vs more affectionate ones. Eg, the neck kisses, calling Jimmy babe, having pillow talk with Tango and literally making a baby with both Jimmy and Sausage in ESMP. But anything affectionate makes him feel vulnerable and so that's a no-no. I have no good explicit examples for this other than the fact that he just doesn't engage in affectionate engages/jokes much (not even with Lizzie) and him refusing to hold Jimmy's hand in SL. It's all jokes, and if it does get too sus, no worries, he can always just proclaim "I have a wife!!" as a no-homo safety net. But methinks he's just in denial. Unfortunately when he starts to grapple with his feelings I think he becomes homophobic and has probably called himself every slur out there. It'd make sense to me given how he often acts around Jimmy. It's not that he has anything against the concept of gay, he just doesn't know how to handle himself being gay

But, along with him trying to step out of the ecosystem and instead wanting to support Jimmy, he's also become more open to intimacy? For lack of a better word. He's been much less outward about his interactions with Jimmy being jokes, eg the RL and WL kisses where they're both just fucking soft about it man and just carry on, or him declaring himself to just be flirting with Jimmy to Gem and Scar in WL with no caveat. Still, Joel absolutely can't express genuine love or care in any conventional manner to Jimmy which hmm. Why might that be... WL puts Joel's worry for Jimmy to the forefront where he is VERY vocally upset about almost each of Jimmy's deaths but can't express this to him any other way than to call him a loser. Other people might hear of his worry (eg Gem) or he'll defend Jimmy to them (disapproving of the premature grave people built for him in SL. This in general is really important in signifying his departure from the ecosystem by disapproving of others within it). He is very nice to Jimmy, like in WL (especially considering Jimmy's several attempts at killing him for no real reason) but only outside of vocal confirmation

This is why in the smallidarity compilation I included clips like him in Phasmo just saying he was worried about Jimmy TO Jimmy because this fucker never says that so this is substantial material for me. It's character development, maybe he's slowly exiting the closet and coming to terms with his feelings and that he can be "vulnerable". Anyway that's why I label him homophobic but the point is that he really does care Jimmy a lot and he's been much better to him and by virtue less homophobic towards himself
