Its very frustrating to be in a fandom where the fanon is wildly different from canon
Because then misrepresentation makes you want to bite things because it's wrong and defangs and lessens your favourite media
On the other hand when you're outside a fandom, meaning you haven't seen the canon ever or only in small chunks, and that fandom has taken over your dash. You can get so into the fanon that when you're presented with actual facts about the canon you're like "I'd rather just consume the fanon as its fed to me by my tumblr mutuals"
Because the fanon has everything that makes you smile and the canon is pain and despair
Anyway that's how I feel about Batman and the early MCU

Controversial Character Tournament Round 2: Light Yagami from Death Note vs Edelgard von Hresvelg from Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(remember that these characters are fictional and your fellow tumblr users are real. please be normal in the notes, i will not hesitate to block if you harass people)
Propaganda under the cut, may contain spoilers:
Light Yagami:
LOVE: - "He does some messed up things but have you considered: fucked up protagonists rock :)" HATE: - "this man makes me sick. ive genuinely had manic episodes over hating him. i have trauma from his existence in general. not even because of the murder. because hes a sexist cheater :(" - "My cousin and I frequently debate this. I think despite his 'intentions' he's ultimately a despicable character who cares for nobody but himself. She disagrees and says that he is just trying to do the right thing and making a difference in the world (she still thinks his actions are wrong, but she doesn't think he himself is despicable)" BOTH: - "I mean cmon man"
Edelgard Von Hresvelg:
LOVE: "People either claim she's the hero or the irredeemable villain with no in between. She's also my lovely wife who has never done anything wrong in her life." "I never even finished her route and remember nothing of what happens in that game but I DO remember the absolute warzone the fandom turned into because of her. She staged a coup and overthrew the head of the government/church and I think that's pretty cool of her. "But she committed war crimes!" God forbid women do anything." "I lied in the previous question. I don't hate her or love her in fact I have never even played this game. But I keep finding people making up Discourse™ featuring wild accusations of bigotry towards both Edelgard fans and Edelgard haters so I feel that she belongs here. (Also my friend hates her. but HER friend loves Edelgard. So even in my small social circle there is a clear polarization.)" "ok I don't have any solid propaganda because my opinion of her is more positive-neutral, but. she fits the spirit of this poll. trust me." "[three houses spoilers] Yes she started a war but it was the only apparent way to break the chokehold the church had over everyone in Fodlan. Also she’s the only lord you can gay marry so I’m hopelessly biased" "every time i go into the tag its either "edelgard is perfect no notes!!" or "edelgard is literally a fascist!!!". ive never seen someone with a neutral opinion of her. i yearn for battle." "I know very little about her to be quite honest! But good god. As a fire emblem fan for the GBA and engage. I have NEVER seen such a decisive character like Edelgard. Jesus Christ. I still find stuff in those tags. What the hell!!!" "I don’t even go to Fire Emblem but even I know that Edelgard has never done anything wrong, ever, in her entire life, and that if she did any war crimes they were a SUPER effective use of girl power. source: I am a lesbian. (realtalk I genuinely love a noble-minded extremist revolutionary and think Edelgard is a great character, so it’s kind of a shame that opinion on her seems to simply split down the line of “whether the person wants to kiss Edelgard or Dimitri more.”)"
HATE: "So on the one hand, she's fully willing to kill and burn and murder her way to a "better future" at the expense of the present, but on the other hand she's pretty cool and #girlboss. She's also a canon gay romance option, but idk if that makes her more or less problematic." "I just. I understand why people like her. I really do. And I don't have anything new to say for why I dislike her. Edelgard fans and stans have heard everything. She has great points and motivation, but her methods are wrong. She hitches her ideals to the first good opportunity and never reconsiders her allegiance when things go off the rails. She hates the church for "lying to people" and proceeds to lie to her own populace herself in her own route. She gives Claude an opportunity to live because she knows he believes in her goals. But Dimitri and his Kingdom are too beholden to the church to ever be offered such mercy. She herself acknowledges that the change she wants to see is more quickly enacted through war than subtle and slow societal change. She recognizes the human toll of her actions, but she justifies it through flowery language and an insistence that the change needs to happen now or it never will. I honestly find her so interesting, and I agree with a lot of her thoughts about the need for societal change in the world of FE:3H. But people latched onto her and propped her up as someone who can do no wrong. And that just never sat right with me. I just think she’s a hypocrite who got put in front of a shiny means to her end and was immediately blind to every other opportunity around her." BOTH: - "I dont even play fire emblem but I cant escape people not shutting up about how much they love or hate her" - "You said there were no hate answers for her...and I don't really hate her so it wouldn't be right but I wanted to balance things out some. She's the perfect storm of a character who sounds right and progressive and has a route all to herself that doesn't contradict that...but once you play other routes, it becomes clear she's kind of. full of misinformation. And attacking people who don't deserve it. Also a LOT of the divisiveness I'm willing to blame on the writers rather than her, for having her both be Evil Tyrant we NEED to take down and Sad Uwu Baby who just wants to eat cake and laze around and loves You the Player SO MUCH."

LGBTQ+ Disabled Characters Showdown Round 1, Wave 3, Poll 13
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A character being totally canon LGBTQ+ and disabled was not required to be in this competition. Please check qualifications and propaganda before asking why a character is included.
Check out the other polls in this wave and prior here.
Harrowhark Nonagesimus-The Locked Tomb
Qualifications:
She's a lesbian and the author Tamsyn Muir has confirmed she's written as schizophrenic, based on her own experience.
Okay SO Harrow is a necromancer nun who is also a huge lesbian. She spends the books of TLT series being super gay and repressed about her emotions for 1. Butch lesbian Jesus and 2. Human Barbie the death of God. She narrates the second book (Harrow the Ninth) and is author-confirmed schizophrenic. She experiences hallucinations thru the whole book and has since childhood. She’s also WIDELY headcannoned as autistic by the fandom (me too) because. Because she IS SO FUCKING AUTISTIC (source: I am autistic too)
Schizophrenic lesbian with a traumatic brain injury
Schizophrenic and sapphic
canonically a schizophrenic lesbian. neither word is used in series, she isn't in a position to get a diagnosis and queer identities are so normalised in the universe that labels just don't get mentioned, but she is written as both by an author who is also both.
Canon schizophrenia
Canon lesbian with canon schizophrenia
She's a schizophrenic lesbian with a traumatic brain injury
Propaganda:
The Locked Tomb is pretty popular on tumblr but I might as well submit her anyway
She’s a lesbian necromancer nun. She’s a saint and also woke up the death of God, who is a human Barbie, who she is in love with, tho she’s also kind of married to lesbian Jesus. She’s schizophrenic. She’s scrungly. She puts bread in a drawer. She’s even autistic
Harrow first started hallucinating (visual and auditory) when she was ten years old! The traumatic brain injury and seizures are much more recent. Unironically gotta love a pov protagonist who makes you struggle along with her in sorting out hallucination and false memory to figure out what's going on. Also while Harrow's disability shapes the narrative, the book isn't at all about her being disabled. It's a fantasy/scifi gothic horror novel about being trapped at a work retreat with God.
so many women want her but she’s determined to be in love with the soul of the dead earth trapped in a 10ft barbie doll instead. she’s a lesbian disaster and is trying to deal with both schizophrenia and over 200 actual ghosts haunting her.
a schizophrenic lesbian, written by a schizophrenic lesbian! she's in love with multiple dead women, but she's also a necromancer so that's not as big of an obstacle as it sounds. weird little bone-obsessed necromancer lesbian. I care about her deeply
Author Tamsyn Muir has discussed how Harrow's schizophrenia is modeled after her own experiences. It matters a lot in her eponymous novel, where her inability to trust what she sees and hears is compounded by her self-inflicted lobotomy to save her girlfriend's soul from getting absorbed into her own.
Harrow is one of the protagonists of her series & both her lesbianism & her schizophrenia play major parts in the story. The author has spoken about how she wrote Harrow based on her own experiences, and the authenticity comes through strongly. Beyond that, she's a teenage gothic nun in love with a holy corpse & she's the greatest bone magician ever born. What more needs be said.
She's a lesbian, she's psychotic, she has seizures, she faints regularly and can't rely on her own memory worth shit. And the only reason she's not going to kill god is so she and her girl can escape the cycle of violence. Basically, Harrowhark Nonagesimus is the entire package.
Anything Else?:
Listen. Listen. I’m not doing Harrow justice here. I LOVE her (Submitter 2)
The author is also schizophrenic! Which is pretty cool. (Submitter 3)
The author of the series is openly schizophrenic, and has mentioned in interviews that she's drawing on that experience when writing Harrow :) (Submitter 8)
Tokito Minoru-Wild Adapter
Qualifications:
Experiences flashbacks in response to auditory triggers (including his own name, implied PTSD), allegorical medical condition (his animal hand - canonically progressing in severity, canonically caused by a drug, canonically causes chronic pain), canon amnesiac. Wild Adapter originally began publication in a Boys Love magazine, and Tokito has an ambiguous relationship with his roommate Kubota; they share a bed and are shown to be physically affectionate toward and extremely protective of each other. There's also a couple of mini albums with character songs (some with lyrics by the author) that imply their relationship. Also I'm pretty sure this is official art https://www.zerochan.net/1163520
Propaganda:
He is the world's most pathetic wet cat of a man (he's actually compared to a cat by multiple people in canon), he walks through life with near childlike wonder and immense barely suppressed rage, he thinks about cutting off his own hand, he loves video games, he kills people, he is incredibly traumatised, he has a weird codependent gay thing with his equally traumatised antisocial roommate. There's official art of him handcuffed to a bed.

Round 1 - Side A
Tumblr media
Propaganda below ⬇️
Saint Citrina Rocks (Dimension 20's A Crown of Candy)
there's nothing better that i can do for this character's chance to win than to say that one of her titles, in canon, is "Cloistered Scholar of the Immaculate Confection" and if that ain't a great pun I don't know what is
I never finished acoc but if the fandom is actually right, shout out to gay lemon saint and martyr.
Popular headcanon says she fucked the broccoli Pope <3 (or at least that they had an intense romantic relationship which might've avoided premarital relations due to their religious ties).
OKAY so Citrina Rocks is basically the token Jesus freak (affectionate) of her very atheist maybe-a-touch-pagan family. She's a saint of the church that's actively fighting against her brother (the king of Candia, her home kingdom and yes the entire place and all the people are Just Candy) and his family. She was ordered to be murdered by a bishop of the church she was essentially canonically in homoerotic love with and she is made of lemon flavored hard candy. i love her SO MUCH
Jesus (Jesus Christ Superstar)
just google the gethsemane high note i think that should win this for him

ppl using the gumby thing or steve literally just confusing the names of things sometimes (esp the nazi vs german thing when we literally know his granddad fought in ww2 and told him stories and he probably referred to the nazis as germans) as proof that he can't read or is just incredibly dumb is so fucking irritating to me. esp when it's pulled from s3 when steve literally figured out on his own that the russian code was coming from hawkins within the same span of episodes. obviously s3 is where they really started pushing the "steve is dumb" jokes but s3 is also where they show us how capable steve is (the code, getting them out of the elevator, winning that fight, saving like half the cast by crashing the car w/o injuring himself or robin). like sorry but eddie canonically couldn't graduate high school and was not capable when it came to upside down problems (he was a princess in a tower most of the season and when he had to do more he died immediately) and no amount of lotr references changes those facts. this fandom is actively trying to make eddie my enemy at this point.
people act like forgetting a children’s cartoon name, and getting it one letter off, means steve’s illiterate? which is just ludicrous. and the german thing really annoys me, especially because the characters call the soviet’s ‘russians’ all the time (thanks to @findafight for reminding me of that lmao), and yet no one points that out. but steve calls nazi’s ‘germans’, likely, like you said, due to his grandfather’s war stories, and suddenly he’s the dumbest person on earth.
i think the only way you can honestly think steve is dumb is if you only listen to the few dumb jokes present in every season, but don’t actually watch the show. because we are shown time and again that steve is intelligent. he pays attention to the things no one else does, he’s emotionally aware, he’s talented enough at sports that he was a captain in two during high school and trained as a lifeguard for three summers, and he trusts his gut in a way no other character does, and has, as a result, saved nearly everyone’s lives multiple times.
eddie’s strengths aren’t in school, or dealing with monsters from an alternate dimension. fair enough! he’s clearly smart in other ways! but just the fact that he’s read books doesn’t mean he’s academic. and for some reason merely pointing this out sends people screaming out that steve is a dumb, fucking idiot who’s lucky he’s pretty.
people are so desperate for eddie to be better than steve that they willingly ignore canon, just to make sure their fave isn’t the ‘dumb one’ in the relationship. like fuck. at this point just leave steve alone.
i do like eddie, but jesus, the version of him praised in this fandom isn’t anywhere near canon, and is, to be honest, really fucking annoying.

Re: https://www.tumblr.com/olderthannetfic/738859016693874688/why-do-some-popular-things-have-such-small & the person who replied to it in Another ask about Slay The Princess --
This answer was a facinating read as someone currently in the James Cameron's Avatar fan space -- i was only 8/9 when the first movie came out, and wasnt very into fandom Yet, but around the early 2010's when i Did get into it and went looking, there was almost Nothing to be found (and the few that Did exist were either short character studies written by some of the smartest people on the planet or troll fics), less than a 1,000 Total in the media tag on ao3 iirc?? And i remember feeling Fine with that, for the exact readon you both mentioned -- the first Avatar is a very well rounded film, no matter what everyone cares to say about it. It was Written to be a stand alone film, and bc JC is good at what he does, that Worked, and there truly wasnt much to write fic about besides Extreme au shenanigans or a few theoretic between-scenes, you know the type.
Then the second movie came out Last year and then the Game came out THIS and the fandom has just. Exploded. It's almost funny because so many of the younger fans, who were in it for x readering with the Sully kids, keep complaining about how "the fandom is dying 😭😭" in the tags the past few months and i just have to stare at it like pal just because we're not still shooting metaphorical fireworks about how much we loved the sequel and game doesnt mean we've all Moved On 😩 Im still Diligently mpregging the resurrected villain in my new longform crack fic thats probably going to be finished around the time the 5th movie comes out. Wee child you must Power through with us. Increase Your Fandom Stamina 💪😎🏃‍♂️!!!
But yeah it's just been Extremely interesting seeing how drastically things have changed, going from that completed, hard-to-write Wholeness from how compact the first film was vs the Flood of worldbuilding and lore and new characters we've been given (and have yet to Get, there may be some evil f/f fics beyond the horizon...) and how much the Sequel has contributed in the process of making Avatar easier to enjoy Casually, rather than as a "stereotypical", "extreme" strawman'd Avatar fan of yor (our elders who i respect most vehemently, for their help in understanding and writing the Na'vi conlang in all our fics 💪❤).
Even though the canon movies have a lot of problems, ive been luckiy enough to see the Fandom do what its always done best -- ive met wonderful people and Incredible artists while the life experience + background knowledge who can flesh out the areas of the concept that JamCam has yet to delve into, for whatever reasons he claims to have, and ive And others have felt moved enough by it all to start writing our Own incredibly self indulgent and sincere stories, within the same framework! Bc good lord it really is a sandbox. The moment you start diving into all the Implications of Avatar's universe, how the RDA is run, how Eywa works, etc etc etc.... jesus. ive lost so many hours of sleep reading real academic papers on Actual xenobiology (yes its a real thing, it both is And isnt what you think it is) for these movies, its nuts.
So some days like Now i just have to sit here like. Wow. We built this house And made it a home. and its Awesome. these asks made me want to gush about it 🥰 thats all! tysm!! Love this blog SO much, keep up the great work n have an awesome day everyone!!!

Strawberry Bracket: Round 2, Poll 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda from submitters Under Cut
Bakugo Katsuki
He's just an asshole to people. Even his friends. Like ugh, I get his homelife isn't the best but jesus
Bully in canon, he learns and grows and apologizes but hes always a bit of a rude jerk. Middle school bully to generally rude high schooler, Bakugo is THE blond jerk
Yelling and insulting people are his two main character traits
blond, explosive bully character (though i hear he gets better)
he is a Dick. he is a Bitch. he is Blonde. he is probably well off— his house is massive. i love him
Blond hair, bullies the MC + is infamous for his shit attitude but is one of the heroes
He bullied the main character since they were kids. Angry boi who explodes things. Calls people he doesn’t care about extras.
He is the biggest of bitches, he's always shouting insults and stuff and he's very loud and bitchy :3
Bakugo just generally has the worst attitude. He’s always yelling at everyone and pushing them around. Even so, it’s clear that he’s smart and knows what he’s doing, and the fandom loves him.
Neito Monoma
He's such a salty lil shit. He aims to be as petty as possible when talking to his rival class schoolmates.

Fandom song animatic tournament: Bracket 1 Side B Round 2
Soldier, Poet, King - The Oh Hellos
"There will come a soldier Who carries a mighty sword He will tear your city down Oh lei, oh lai, oh, Lord"
Crossing the Line - Tangled the Series
"No! This has to stop now This thing where you think that you've been my friend And don't even hear how you condescend The way you've always done"
Remember that we're voting on how Iconic they are for ANIMATICS, not for the song itself. In order to make things fair, the tone and mood of the song should not affect how iconic it is (for example, a serious song should not be considered more iconic than a joke song just because it's serious)
Propaganda and animatic links of the songs under the cut:
Soldier, Poet, King - The Oh Hellos
Propaganda:
Everyone was doing animatics of this. The meme was that you’d choose one of your blorbos to represent the “soldier,” one for the “poet”, and one for the “king.” The original point of the song is that “soldier poet and king” are all one person, and that person is Jesus, but literally no one cares about that. Who needs Jesus when you have Warrior Cats?
What's that?...it's supposed to be about Jesus? NOT ANYMORE, BABEY!! It's about my BLORBOS
It's a really nice song and can highlight different characters and their talents/abilities
If your fandom is fantasy, has a fantasy au, or characters that fit the roles, this can works. Can probably fit any fandom.
you look this song up on yt and youre going to find an animatic with it for every fandom in existence i stg man
Animatics with the song:
Song of Achilles
DSMP Sleepy Bois Animatic
Genshin Impact
The Owl House
The Adventure Zone
Crossing the Line - Tangled the Series
Propaganda:
No Propaganda Submitted
Animatics with the song:
She-Ra
Encanto
Double Life Desert Duo
Marcanne Animatic
BNHA Villain Uraraka Animatic
Please be cautious and read the title, description and warning cards on the animatic videos if you decide to watch them. If you've got specific triggers I'd recommend even more caution when watching animatics of fandoms you don't know, since sometimes canon-typical themes don't get warnings.

what submissions have the most convincing propaganda: rather for being silly or being serious
hi anon. mod zazie here. i read through every single one of the submissions to answer this because i am insane. and the results are as follows ^-^
techno & phil fans are INSANE over "for you phil, the world!!" as they should be!! i, too, read bunfloras' phil & techno fics. but even if i didnt already know who emeraldduo was, you all have VERY GOOD propaganda. Immortal lifelong best friends... <3

Fareeha Amari is now a canon lesbian I think this will please you
Love that everyone mentioned me in this
Okay, so a lot of this is for @seolh who asked for the tealdeer for the short story because she knows I hate myself and have no sense of fucking self-preservation even a little bit, even at all. Overwatch is EXTREMELY difficult for me to drag myself away from, even if at this point (in some ways because of something I am about to complain about) my Lena, Fareeha, Angela, etc, are all BASICALLY original characters with their own gifts and weaknesses and internal lives that the game and its surrounding media is not interested in. I still have feelings for it in a weird fucked up way. It's my toxic not-quite-ex
ANYWAY THAT BEING SAID.
Things I loved:
Pharah being gay, obviously. But I'm going to be honest here--at this point what BlizzOfficial does has no bearing on my characters as I see them.
The slight nod to Pharah being a by the book weirdo with her seatbelt still fucking fastened when the flight is in any motion at all. Loved that. Actually that was my favorite part of the story. Thought it was great.
Love anytime we use callsign vs first name as an intimacy identifier, though, it DOES bug me that we become intimate with Baptiste in *checks watch* 3 pages.
Did not like:
So a lot of the problem I have with the surrounding media is partly Blizz' fault and partly the way we have now constructed our interaction with media on the internet. The percentages of which I'm not sure. But the writing, the characterization is BLAND. There is not a single bold choice made with any character in this story. Before you say "But Pharah is a lesbian!!!" This is an American game made by Americans, mostly, for Americans, mostly. That is the cultural context of the game. Like it or don't, it is true. Pharah being a lesbian given the game demographics is not all that bold. I'm not complaining about that specifically. What I'm saying is: These characters are milquetoast as FUCK. You can't be opposed to how either Pharah or Baptiste are portrayed because they are portrayed in such a textbook inoffensive way that they can neither fail nor rise. This is by design. I am not actually blaming the author. I am sure she had a brief that said "Every character has to speak and behave like like a textbook White American lest we be branded bigots on the internet." But it's annoying, and I know OW has, historically, had a very very annoying fandom that has cried wolf so many times and had so much infighting and had some of the WORST FAITH ENGAGEMENT with social justice I have EVER fucking seen, to the point of me finding it EMBARRASSING, but. It still leads to me looking at Pharah and Baptiste and being like "I have no clue who these bitches are and becaus eI cannot hate them I cannot love them"
"I would have thought it was obvious. I'm not passing, am I?" this is a very very weird line. If you're gonna have Pharah talk like a fucking White Midwestern American 24/7* she's going to say something like, "Do I look straight?" or something. I'm not offended just confused.
It seems they've decided that Pharah did in fact grow up with Overwatch around her all the time despite Ana sometimes being an absentee parent, I guess? I know it's been ping-ponged for awhile, and I admit to disappointment that they came down on this side, not for the least of which reasons that it makes it disappointing that ...everyone else also abandoned her? She said she's hadn't seen Cole in years. Angela? Jesus Christ, how does this woman not have significant issues. (Oh right. Milqued Toast.) It also makes Fareeha/Angela a weirder thing for me, so I will put it out of my mind immediately.
*Obviously I do not love this choice, but I do think it's a fair one and I understand why it's made. Please keep that in mind when I rag on it, I'm not actually IN REAL LIFE mad about it.

1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 12, and 25 for Kara!! I’m genuinely curious about this
1. Why do you like or dislike this character?
I THINK SHES SO NEAT... cradling her in my hands. i like a girl with anger issues and also with immigrant metaphors. i want to put her in a bucket and study her with a magnifying glass like a bug
2. Favorite canon thing about this character?
i think her dissonance about expecting to be older than clark but then being actually baby is so fun. and her immigrant metaphors and her tragedy are SO compelling to me. but i also really, really love that her grief turns to rage. the way she is so compassionate and also so fundamentally angry is just. YEAH!!! i LOVE that in a girl go ham fuck shit up!!!!
3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?
i'm honestly of two minds about the thing where they state she's significantly stronger than clark. it isn't really explained why (at least in sg2005?) (like, he's been under a yellow sun far longer than her at that point, what makes her different? how does every other kryptonian from kandor stack up in this powerscale? etc) and without any real basis, to me it just feels like a haha #girlboss thing where they were like well a woman can't be interesting if she's not physically the most powerful ever. unlike other women, this one kicks ass!!!!
7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?
acknowledging that she's got some REAL fruity vibes going on with several of the other girls she's interacted with 😳
8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?
generic girlbossification again and also just... not knowing anything about her i guess. like i get it, keeping track of it all with like linda danvers vs linda lang vs kara danvers (why is this her name in current canon btw. :/) etc can be confusing esp if you don't actually know where to start and just know kara, like, exists, but also. you know.
OH. ACTUALLY A SPECIFIC i have seen multiple posts in the last few weeks thinking she's significantly older than kon??? she is not!!! they're the same age (in postcrisis anyway idk whats going on in rebirth and frankly neither does dc i think)!!!! that's the whole reason she takes his death so hard!!! thats a member of her family her own age and he just died!!! like nearly every other person she's ever had!!
12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?
she also has the house of el family curls. she does not really care that much about her appearance though so she just kinda brushes them out and lets her hair be just the wavy "this could be curls but isn't" floof instead. also, it's a kinda brighter yellow than natural blonde hair (it's natural for kryptonians, but...!) the same way her eyes, like the rest of the kryptonians, are more luminous than normal human eyes. people tend to assume she dyed it.
25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?
my first impression was actually of mae kent because i didn't know the difference between all the supergirls and i was just reading sb94 alskdjf and then i looked it up and went Oh. this is more complicated than i thought. and it was a little intimidating for a second, but then i just went fuck it and started reading supergirl 2005. first impression of THAT was "oh jesus christ i hate men" because. well. look at the beginning of that thing. BUT when it picks up it picks UP and my god... cradles kara gently in my hands. i love her so much. she contains multitudes.

The validity of jock/quarterback Stan has served as a heated argument in the South Park fandom for over a decade. Years later, despite the popularity of such a portrayal diminishing, the discussion continues, often begging the question; Why doesn’t Kyle receive similar treatment? Is it because he’s legitimately less ‘jocky’? Or is it something else?
To answer this question, we need to turn back to canon. In this meta, I’ll be doing just that. There are a few subquestions we need to answer, all of which I’ll be going over individually;
Is Kyle equally as athletic as Stan?
Is Kyle equally as interested in sports as Stan?
Does Kyle have interests that are more formative than his interest in sports?
Let’s dive right into it!
Okay, I lied. We’re not diving right into it.
Firstly, a disclaimer; this meta piece is not an attack on jock Kyle, nor on a less jocky portrayal of Stan. Rather, it serves as a defense for jock Stan and nerd Kyle, as well as the fan-creators (both current and past) who choose to portray the characters in such a way. Everyone is entitled to their own headcanons and portrayals, regardless of canon basis; as such, I intend not to discourage alternative portrayals, but to instead facilitate understanding of why Jock Stan and Nerd Kyle were such formative interpretations, and how those portrayals do have extremely solid reasoning within canon.
And secondly, for clarification; I use the terms ‘jock’ Stan/Kyle and ‘nerd’ Kyle throughout this essay due to those terms being commonly used throughout the fandom.
For the definition of ‘jock’, I’ll be using Oxford Language’s second definition; “an enthusiastic athlete or sports fan, especially one with few other interests.” This definition is where I draw the questions I posed above from.
Tumblr media
For the definition of ‘nerd’, I’ll be using Merriam-Webster’s first definition; “a person devoted to intellectual, academic, or technical pursuits or interests.”
Tumblr media
In the way I’ll be using them, neither term is intended to be offensive; rather, as apt descriptions of the interests and talents Stan and Kyle have.
Okay, now we can get started!
Athleticism
The obvious first place to look for evidence of each character’s athleticism is in the episodes in which they actually play sports (most specifically football for Stan and basketball for Kyle), so let’s start there!
We’ll begin with Big Gay Al’s Big Gay Boat Ride, a Stan-centric football-centric episode, and one commonly cited as evidence for jock Stan. For our purposes, the relevant parts of the episode lie in the homecoming football game between South Park and Middle Park; a football game in which Stan plays as the quarterback. According to quite a few people in town, Stan is not only good, but the best quarterback South Park has ever seen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fact that this episode takes place in Season 1 is notable; it shows that Stan’s skill at football was both an intended part of his character from extremely early in his development, AND that it was formative enough to be the focus of the first Stan-centric episode in the series. Stan appears in three episodes before this one, as well as Jesus vs Frosty and Jesus vs Santa, but Big Gay Al’s Big Gay Boat Ride is the first episode that Stan gets the spotlight; and in the process, it serves as an episode that introduces key character traits that follow him throughout the series. The Stan traits that Matt and Trey wanted viewers to take away from this episode were that he’s open-minded, loves his dog, values masculinity (or ‘butchness’, as he describes it), and is REALLY good at football. This character trait is present throughout the entirety of the series, which I’ll elaborate on further later on.
However, Kyle also plays a role in this episode; when Stan doesn’t show up in time, Kyle’s elected quarterback in his place. Stan also tosses the football to Kyle near the end of the game, and Kyle scores a touchdown; this implies that while Kyle’s skills aren’t deserving of the recognition Stan gets, he’s not half bad at football. So, what about basketball?
The jock Kyle equivalent of Big Gay Al’s Big Gay Boat Ride is Season 9′s Mr. Garrison’s Fancy New Vagina, in which the relevant parts include Kyle trying out for the all-state basketball team and going to great lengths to achieve his goal. The details of how he goes about this aren’t particularly relevant, other than to note that if he was willing to undergo surgery, he must have been committed. During this episode, we find out a few relevant things about Kyle’s interest in basketball; that he’s the best player in his school, that he loves basketball, and that he wants to play for the Denver Nuggets one day.
Tumblr media
Notably, while he’s the best basketball player at South Park Elementary, he isn’t good enough to make all-states. I won’t be delving deep into why he didn’t make the team (due to him not making it being the setup for an episode that’s in extremely bad taste, in multiple ways), but it’s worth considering as it’s the only real situation we have in which Kyle is pitted against people outside of South Park. Another point of note is that while Kyle is talented at basketball, he’s never shown on the South Park Cows basketball team; this contrasts Stan’s prominent role on the football team, as well as Kyle’s own participation there.
Tumblr media
However, Stan and Kyle’s participation in football and basketball respectively aren’t the only evidence we have in-show of their athleticism; the two of them both participate on several different sports teams, as well as engage in other activities indicative of how athletic they actually are.
For the purposes of this argument, many of the sports the two of them participate in can be disregarded; if both characters are on the wrestling team in equal positions, it can’t be used as a point towards either of them. However, there is one relevant sport in which both of them participate, but take on notably different roles; baseball.
Baseball has many different positions, and they vary quite significantly in difficulty; commonly assumed to be the most difficult are the pitcher and the catcher. Stan serves as pitcher on the South Park baseball team; this implies that Stan, despite having no enjoyment for baseball as a sport, is good enough to be chosen for what is arguably the most difficult position on the team. Kyle’s positioning (behind and to the right) of Stan indicates that he’s the second baseman; it’s a fairly demanding position, but doesn’t come anywhere close to the difficulty of pitcher. This alone doesn’t indicate that Stan is athletic in a general sense rather than exclusively in sports, but other things do.
Consider the episode Asspen, in which Stan is challenged to a ski race from a far more experienced skier. He’s tasked with racing him down the fictional mountain K-13, which is described as being extremely dangerous; a character in the episode informs Stan that 35 people have died going down it. It is also important to note that skiing is a very physically demanding sport; Stan’s successful training throughout the episode already implies significant athleticism. During the ski race itself, he’s not notably fast, but he successfully avoids the obstacles and completes the race; a feat which, as we know from the episode, is not in any way easy. This indicates a pattern; Stan is recognizably good at athletic activities in general. This pattern continues down to the littlest details; in The Wacky Molestation Adventure, Stan effortlessly swings down from a tall pole to meet Mark and Linda, while Kyle walks instead.
Kyle, on the other hand, does not display the same pattern; compared to Stan-centric episodes, in which Stan is often given opportunities to display athletic prowess, Kyle-centric episodes beyond Mr. Garrison’s Fancy New Vagina rarely involve sports at all. This could indicate that while Kyle is equally as athletic, he just isn’t given a chance to show it; however, it’s worth noting how much more of a role sports and athleticism plays in Stan-centric episodes.
So, what can we conclude from all of this?
Both Stan and Kyle are good at their respective sports, but Stan is either objectively more athletic or has simply had more opportunities to demonstrate it. Their differing participation on the baseball team seems to clarify that it’s the former. Therefore, we can answer our first question; no, Kyle does not seem to be as athletic as Stan.
Interests in Sports
Stan and Kyle are both comparatively excellent players on their respective teams, but in order to determine whether Kyle’s athleticism is as formative to his character as Stan’s is, we need to delve deeper. Kyle is good, but how much does he actually care? Does he display consistent interest in sports, and in basketball in particular? How does he stack up against Stan’s interest in sports?
To determine this, let’s start with Stan, so we have a point of reference to go off of for Kyle.
Stan loves football; he has a passion for the Denver Broncos, in particular. His love of football (and even sports, in general) is obvious simply from entering his room; he has two football lamps, a John Elway poster, a Broncos sticker, a South Park Cows banner, and two pieces of baseball merchandise - despite that not even being the sport he’s most interested in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stan’s decked out room isn’t just a one-time design choice, either; when Stan moves to Tegridy Farms, he still has a Denver Broncos clock on his wall. His interest in sports hasn’t waned; the Broncos are still important to him, over twenty seasons after his interest in football debuted.
Tumblr media
Matt and Trey haven’t forgotten about Stan’s interest in the Broncos recently, either; in the most recent special, The Streaming Wars, Stan has a Broncos backpack.
Tumblr media
We have evidence of Stan’s interest in football from Season 1 to the most recent South Park content released, but his interest in football isn’t even limited to then; in Post-Covid, the first topic of conversation Randy brings up is the performance of the Broncos. And Stan’s response implies that he’s still following them, forty years later; even when Stan is down and depressed, barely able to show interest in anything at all, he still cares about the Broncos.
Tumblr media
Stan loves the Broncos, obviously, but more specifically, he loves John Elway; it’s clear throughout the show that he idolizes him. Stan’s idea of an important individual is John Elway - in Mecha-Streisand, he doesn’t take Barbara Streisand seriously because she doesn’t know him.
Tumblr media
His parents and friends are obviously aware of his fixation on Elway, too; he receives Elway-themed gifts several times throughout the show, once from his parents and once from Gary Harrison.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stan idealizes John Elway; it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that he wants to be like him, given his skill and passion for football. The first two instances in which Elway is brought up are in Season 1, but All About Mormons takes place in Season 7; Stan’s idolization of him holds strong for several seasons.
He doesn’t seem to have as much of a passion for other specific Broncos players, but he still stays up to date on both their and the team’s performance; in Trapped In The Closet, the scientologists distract Stan by asking him about the Broncos’ record; Stan knows the answer immediately.
Tumblr media
In Guitar Queer-o, when given the opportunity to meet a player from the Broncos, Stan is absolutely thrilled, and while Kyle seems excited too, Stan’s the one who follows up. Not only does Stan instantly recognize him, but he also knows his performance off the top of his head. Stan’s mention of his dad’s opinion also implies that he’s had conversations about the Broncos at home before, further supporting the idea of him holding a genuine interest in football.
Tumblr media
Stan’s also the first kid to step up and take a leadership role in multiple different sports; when playing football with his friends in Raisins, he lays out the game plan, and when Pip doesn’t know how to play dodgeball in Conjoined Fetus Lady, Stan’s the first kid to step up and explain it to him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s obvious that Stan’s interest in sports (football, in particular) is multifaceted and consistent; he has a preference for a favorite team (and keeps track of their performance), he idolizes a specific player, he decorates his room with various sports-themed decor, he takes an instinctual teaching role in sports-related activities, and he continues to hold a flame for football from age eight to age fifty. Football is the only interest of Stan’s brought up this consistently, over such a wide period of time. Clearly, there is evidence for Stan being an enthusiastic athlete and sports fan, as our definition of ‘jock’ specifies; what about Kyle? Does he have equal enthusiasm for basketball?
(Before we continue on, credit to M-Arkham-Ill on DA for the screenshots of Stan and Kyle’s rooms, and @/hachichimitsu for her thread on jock Stan, which I pulled a lot of these moments from! Go check her thread out!!)
Okay, back to Kyle; we started with Stan’s room, so it seems reasonable that we look first to Kyle’s room for evidence of his interest in basketball.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kyle DOES have something basketball-related on his desk; it’s a little trophy, implying that he won something or other. He also has a basketball in his closet, as well as a golf club; that being said, it’s highly implied that the club is more for his Stick of Truth persona than for actual golf. However, the rest of his room isn’t nearly as swamped with sports-related decor as Stan’s is; in fact, there seems to be another theme in his room that overpowers sports. But we’ll come back to that soon!
So, Kyle’s room indicates less of an interest in sports than Stan’s does, but does his interest in basketball throughout the rest of the series make up for the difference?
The next time in which basketball is mentioned specifically in relation to Kyle is in Cartman Finds Love, a season 16 episode. The seven season gap between these episodes is already notable; it implies that Kyle’s interest in basketball is used as needed. Stan’s interest in football, on the other hand, comes up even when it could be replaced by something else; when comparing these instances, Kyle’s interest seems to be plot relevant, while Stan’s interest is character relevant.
Back to Cartman Finds Love. The reason basketball is relevant in this episode is that it serves as a common interest between Kyle and Nichole; based on Kyle’s response to this realization, Nichole liking basketball is a great thing. This, at the very least, confirms that Kyle is still interested in basketball by season 16.
Tumblr media
Cartman Finds Love puts us off to a great start, but after that, it’s much more difficult to look for episodes in which Kyle’s interest in basketball becomes relevant. To my knowledge, there are no more scenes in which basketball is brought up for Kyle in the same way football is brought up for Stan. There are several instances in which all of the boys play basketball, but if they’re all doing it, we can’t really use it as Kyle-exclusive evidence. Similarly, at the end of Post-Covid, all four boys go to a Denver Nuggets game as Heather Williams’ special guests; Kyle doesn’t seem any more excited than the other three. After season 16, Kyle’s interest in basketball seems to drop off.
Once again, let’s sum up our findings; Stan is extremely enthusiastic about football, and that enthusiasm spans multiple aspects of the sport. Kyle, while maintaining his interest in basketball to an extent, doesn’t have nearly as many instances in which he displays that interest. So, let’s refer back to one of our questions; is Kyle equally as interested in sports as Stan? Again; the answer seems to be a no.
Other Interests
So, we’ve gone over Stan and Kyle’s sportiness in canon, and come to some conclusions; Kyle seems to be less athletic than Stan, as well as less interested in sports as a whole. We’ve also come to another conclusion; Stan’s interest in sports is a HUGE part of his character, and it dwarfs the large majority of his other interests. This makes Stan our textbook definition of a jock; he’s an enthusiastic athlete, an enthusiastic sports fan, and sports is his primary interest. Kyle participates in sports, and likes them, but I’d hesitate to call him enthusiastic; that being said, Stan does set an incredibly high standard for an in-show sports fan.
Now, we’re going to switch gears a little bit, and shift from Kyle’s interests in sports to Kyle’s interests in other things. Part of the reason I wrote this is to justify my interest in nerd Kyle; based on canon, is that a valid interpretation of the canon? Is Kyle devoted to intellectual and academic interests?
Let’s go back to that image of Kyle’s room, and back to the theme that I mentioned earlier; the theme in Kyle’s room that outnumbers his basketball trophy is academics! He has a picture of Einstein on his wall; a figure with obvious connotations towards innovation and intelligence. He has a solar system model and a globe on his desk, and we can tell that the solar system model is too small to be the costume he wore; therefore, it seems like it must be a school project. He has a calculator and pens as a permanent fixture on his desk; when viewers look at Kyle’s room, they’re supposed to notice that his room is massively themed towards academics. Almost to the extent that Stan’s room is themed towards sports!
Tumblr media
Such a trend continues in Post-Covid, too; when we get a good look at Kyle’s study, the first thing that stands out is the huge amount of books he has. He also has a basketball trophy - the same one that appears to be present in his room as a child, implying both some level of importance and that trophy was the only one that he’s ever won for basketball - as well as his solar system model. Kyle’s interest in basketball is still present here, but barely; in fact, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that, since nothing else related to basketball is present for him during the specials, that Kyle kept his trophy more for the reminder of winning than his love of the sport. Kyle has always been a character that thrives on validation, and such a concept would apply even more in Post-Covid, where it’s implied Kyle hasn’t ‘won’ anything or felt victorious in a very long time. Keeping a trophy just for the sake of it being a trophy would not be out of character. The same can’t be said about his books.
Tumblr media
Kyle’s room isn’t the only indication that he leans more towards the academics than the athletics, either; consider the following scenes.
In The Tooth Fairy’s Tats 2000, Kyle gets very into philosophy after finding out the tooth fairy isn’t real; he develops the undoubtedly intellectual desire to learn. He tears through books to try and find out what he’s looking for, which is a characteristic we rarely see in any other character; Kyle refuses to brush off things he doesn’t understand; instead, he seeks further knowledge and understanding. His desire to learn more about philosophy continues beyond this episode, too; in Kyle’s closet, there’s a book titled ‘Space-Time and Quantum Theory’.
Tumblr media
Another instance of ‘nerdy’ Kyle behavior is in Follow That Egg, in which he’s one of the students most passionate about the project; he is incredibly insistent on getting an A, while Stan doesn’t seem to care less.
Tumblr media
He cares deeply about his academic performance, and more than that, he actually admits to enjoying academics; he likes studying. He even says that it’s part of who he is; his love for academics and intellectual pursuits composes a core part of his identity.
Tumblr media
He’s even one of the finalists in the South Park spelling bee, being the only kid from South Park Elementary who makes it to the final three. His academic pursuits drive him; he strives for good grades and recognition of his intelligence, and he goes so far as to genuinely enjoy the process. His passion for academics is matched by few other kids in the school, and he most certainly trumps Stan in both his intellectual interests and performances.
Tumblr media
Furthermore, Kyle is one of the more tech-savvy kids; a passion that certainly constitutes technical interests. In The Snuke, Kyle delves deep into searching for the suspected terrorists; he only needs brief guidance to understand how to effectively research, going so far as to cross-reference accounts. In Bass to Mouth, it’s revealed that he knows how to track IP addresses. He’s naturally skilled (and even devoted) towards technical pursuits, meeting yet another qualification for our definition of a nerd.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even Kyle’s tendency towards speeches paints him as an intellectual; his role, especially in early seasons (including the pilot episode) is to say what he learned that day. He’s constantly on a quest for knowledge, a trait that separates him from the other boys. Similarly to Stan’s love of football and animals, this is the trait that the viewers were supposed to take away from Kyle in one of the first episodes; Kyle was meant to be the smart, self-aware kid out of the group from the very beginning.
This is even supported by the commentary for An Elephant Makes Love to a Pig, in which Matt and Trey have this to say about Kyle’s intelligence: “We decided in this episode that Kyle would kind of be the good student... he would kind of be the guy who got As, and stuff. He's not a dick about it, but he just is smarter than the other guys - school smarter than the other guys."
Okay, let’s recap one more time. The interest that’s most frequently brought up for Stan, even in situations where it’s unnecessary, is football; this implies that rather than being something to move the plot along, football is key to Stan’s character. Basketball (and other sports) do not behave in the same way for Kyle; instead, academics does, with Kyle almost always being the character who engages in intellectual, academic, and technical pursuits out of the main four. His interest in academics is also much more widespread than his interest in basketball.
From all of this information, we can draw our conclusion to our third question; yes, Kyle does have interests that are more formative to his character than basketball and sports, with those interests being academic.
We’re done analyzing canon; now, we need to decide what all of the above actually means. Is Stan a jock? Is Kyle a jock? If Kyle isn’t a jock, what is he?
The first question is the easiest to answer; absolutely. Stan fits every criterion for being a jock, bar none. No matter what term you prefer to use in place of jock - sports fan, athlete, quarterback, etc - Stan meets the qualifications.
Our second question is a little bit harder. Is Kyle an athlete? Yes - but not as talented as Stan is. Is Kyle interested in sports? Sure. But is he enthusiastic? Probably not; he rarely, if ever, displays interest in basketball beyond the two episodes where such an interest serves as a plot point. Does he have few other interests - or, in other words, is basketball his primary interest? Also, probably not. Kyle isn’t the sporty kid of the group - Stan is. Kyle’s primary interest goes beyond sports. Putting all of this together, I would have to say no; Kyle does not qualify as a jock, or at least the definition of a jock that we’re using above.
So, what is he? This question is simpler than the second one - he’s a nerd! His interests are primarily intellectual in nature, and he has a skill and a passion for academics matched by few; while many of the kids in South Park are notoriously bad at school, Kyle meets academic challenges with enthusiasm. In situations where the boys need someone with technical skills, Kyle almost always steps up to the plate; he knows far more about technology and how to use it than the average kid in South Park does. Similarly to Stan and being a jock, Kyle meets every qualification for being a nerd.
Does this mean the two of them will necessarily stay that way? Definitely not. There are thousands of possibilities for how the two of them will turn out; maybe Stan dives deeper into board games and becomes a nerd, or Kyle grows increasingly enthusiastic about basketball and becomes a jock. It could happen, and it’s an entirely valid headcanon. It’s even entirely valid to portray them differently as ten year olds - there’s no rule saying you have to adhere directly to canon!
But even if they do change in the future, or even if they’re portrayed differently, that doesn’t change how they actually appear in the show, and that doesn’t change the fact that when people choose to portray Stan as a jock and Kyle as a nerd, they are drawing directly from canon; they are simply having the characters maintain the interests they had in their youth. And that’s not a bad thing. It’s not an interpretation deserving of the constant criticism that it receives, either; the reason jock Stan and nerd Kyle became so popular (and stayed so popular for quite a while) was because it stays close to their canonical interests. It works directly off of what we see in the show, and in every fandom, canonical interpretations are always most popular.
Let’s go full circle, and answer the question I posed at the beginning one final time (albeit worded differently for clarity):
Why isn’t Kyle portrayed as a jock as often as Stan is?
The answer; because, at this point in the canon, he isn’t one.
(Thanks to @/allymumu for the title image, and thank you for reading!)

LGBTQ+ Disabled Characters Showdown Round 1, Wave 3, Poll 3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A character being totally canon LGBTQ+ and disabled was not required to be in this competition. Please check qualifications and propaganda before asking why a character is included.
Check out the other polls in this wave and prior here.
Daan-Fear and Hunger
Qualifications:
It's widely accepted by the fandom that he's bisexual as most of the playable characters in the Funger games are. For his disability, he is missing one of his eyes and covers his socket with an eyepatch.
Propaganda:
This is the most depressed man in existence, but he's also just really funny. The sheer amount of horrors he went through even before the actual horror game are so overwhelming it almost loops back to being funny.
Johnny Joestar-JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run
Qualifications:
He is canonly disabled (paraplegic) and often seen as LGBTQ+ in fandom. He spends the manga in a cross country horseback race with another man whom he gets very close to
Propaganda:
He’s a badass Kentucky cowboy ex-jockey who races horses despite not being able to use his legs (so he’s all muscle on top baby) - He is incredibly emotionally complex and has amazing character growth throughout the series - He is frequently drawn pressed up close against his male best friend in a not so straight fashion - He can shoot bullets from his nails and that’s sick as hell - One time he gave up the possibility to walk again just to save his partner and I think that’s the epitome of romance - He’s a cutie patootie - He has canonically met Jesus Christ. And Jesus approved of him. So you should too
Anything Else?:
I love him.

So are you saying , with your old post , this , for now , will be another scenario where we need to look at different forms of textually canon ? Vs , they kiss, they declare love etc (for now )
Nope! Saying the opposite.
I'm saying Robbie's beating you over the head with that post for 13 episodes and telling you that you're all blind assholes THEN slapping you with the text after making you guys chew your own cud tbh
And here we go with assigned meaning without context. In the context of everything else i've been saying, you decided to leap to this conclusion, even AFTER READING THAT POST.
This is the problem. And this is the plot.
I told you this fandom wasn't ready for Robbie's metanarrative and I told you Destiel fandom had its own come to jesus moments coming, and that's part of it.
That's what the fuck I'm saying.
I'm saying Robbie's pointing out unlevel and biased readings, projections, lowkey calling out even destiel fandom's internalized homophobia triggered by chasing dumb goalposts arguing with morons, and staking your asses to the wall right next to the wincels.
Jesus Christ, the post even talks about agreed language and shit, and let me guess, you didn't even blink to CONNECT THE CONTEXT about HOW THAT IS RELEVANT TO OUR CURRENT MONSTERS AND ADJACENT EVEN. How it's. THE WHOLE. PLOT.
The plot is you assholes have been arguing about the obvious and denying it on all sides for years too loud to hear it, whatever language it's spoken or presented in or whatever weird codes or however someone personally fucking speaks, it's the context, and you've all flunked for fucking years. HOT TIP: DEAN'S CURRENTLY SPEAKING IN 13 MIXED TRACKS.
The plot is I'm Lata and Carlos standing there going I FUCKING TOLD YOU SO. Even after John swore Mary wasn't his girlfriend. because everybody been knew.
