She does not believe he thought she would be relieved at the news that he may be walking away and leaving Nikki Heat behind. Not for a hot second does she believe that he has a thought to spare for how she feels about anything—not how she actually feels anyway. She’s sure he has plenty of thoughts to spare when it comes to building up his own sense of importance to her. She probably can’t count the thoughts he’s devoted to how lost she’ll be without his playground-based insights, how tragic her life will become when she’s inevitably kicked off the force because she’s unable to solve a single murder without him. He probably has to rent out a storage space for those kinds of thoughts, but there’s no way in hell that the idea of her being relieved every occurred to him. 

She’s sure of that. 

She’s pretty sure. 

Except . . .

They are fighting about stupid things. A part of her mind—a very persuasive part—points out that this is not breaking news. This is not evidence of anything other than the fact that he is still drawing breath in proximity to her. But a different part of her mind—a much smaller, but possibly more honest part—points out that these are arguments are not just stupid, they’re weird. Worse still, they’re weird on both sides. 

Even if he’d been lying in that grimy hallway, why would he choose that lie? Where would it even come from, given the sheer size of his ego? And what the hell was up with her jerky, stilted—and let’s face it, belated—agreement that she is, she would be, in the event of . . . relieved? Why does that feel like a lie?  

She’d like it to be his fault. If she could lay her own awkwardness at his feet, that would be ideal. She’d like to convince herself, for instance, that the sheer enormity of a lie that would require him to have any kind of empathy or insight into her actual feelings simply staggered her in the moment. 

But it’s not just that moment. It’s their utterly childish argument—within sight of a billion cameras, within earshot of a billion tabloid parasites—at the book launch. He’d been spinning lies there, too, hadn’t he? His sudden onset allergy to eye contact and his mumblings about her not knowing anything about being scorned, about being turned away . . . all that had to be some kind of act, right? He can’t have given any real thought to her heartaches or lack thereof, not when he’d decided from the get go that Nikki Heat was kinda slutty. 

The only thing that should ring true about the entire, juvenile conversation should be his denunciation of his own character as too insubstantial to support more than one novel, but even there, she’d tugged the other way, suddenly championing the self-proclaimed bane of her existence as having plenty to her. The one thing they should be in one-hundred percent agreement about, and something about it makes her dig her stupidly expensive, bought-for-the-occasion heels in and deny his premise. She should be relieved that there’s some truth-telling at last—some highly unlikely eleventh hour self-awareness on his part, but she’s not. The things that ought to ring true don’t. They’re fighting, then back-burnering the fighting for the good of the case, then they’re lapsing into awkward silence after they both acknowledge that it’s happening. He’s going, and she’s relieved, right? 

No. Not right. It’s not right on any level. She knows that, and there’s no other word for it but weird. 

She’s not exactly coping with the weird—his, hers, theirs. She’s not acing this part of things, and then it seems she doesn’t have to. He gets a phone call, and so does she. He’s not leaving after all, and she knows how this goes. She ramps up her fury. She is going to kill him. He was supposed to be out of her life. She draws herself up and prepares to meet his look of smug satisfaction. 

But there isn’t one. He cowers instead. He insists he had nothing to do with either phone call. It’s fine. It’s a variation on a theme. It’s her twisting his ear and him frantically crying, “Apples.” That’s all it is. 

She’s sure. 

She’s pretty sure. 

Except . . . 

They’re heading out from the scene of the murder—the new are you coming, or what? murder. They’re sliding into their respective seats in her unmarked, belting in, getting ready to peel away from the curb. She turns the key in the ignition. His voice is so quiet, so drawn in that she can barely hear it over the sound of the car turning over.   

“I’m glad I still get to do this.” He looks up quickly, panic flashing across his face. “I didn’t—I swear I didn’t know Paula was going to call—I swear . . .” He looks back down at his own hands, fidgeting in his lap. “I know you were . . . you would have been glad to have this all over with, but I just . . . I’m glad it’s not.” 

The car idles. She doesn’t know what to do with this. The silence stretches out, but what he’s said lingers. The truth and vulnerability of it fills the silence up. He thought she’d be relieved—glad even. He’s uncertain of her. She feels a twinge of self-reproach, a bigger twinge of defensiveness—like she’s not uncertain of him? 

They are uncertain of each other and why wouldn’t they be? They’re not exactly in the habit of saying what they mean. So she does, for once. Kind of. 

“Yeah, well, I guess I’m glad, too.” She mumbles. She glares at him. “After all, I’m under orders to be glad, aren’t I?” 

He sits upright, his head swiveling toward her in surprise. “That you are, Detective. Under orders,” he says with a startled smile, and she can see tht he knows. 

She thinks he knows. 

A/N: . . . and then they totally made out in the car. But seriously. I like to imagine there was some acknowledgment that they really were on the verge of parting and were both unspooling over the possibility.

Dreams are something of a mystery. No one, not a single scientist, knows why we dream. Are we simply filtering through memories as we sleep? Are our subconscious trying to tell us something? Or are we tapping into a realm beyond our reality?

When Mabel first appeared in her dreamscape, she was well on her way to a panic attack because she thought she was back in Mabeland…or that everything after was all a dream and that she never left Mabeland and Weirdmageddon was still happening.

What clued Mabel that it wasn’t the case was because everything was downscaled from how Mabeland was presented, with way less lighting and – thankfully – a proper playlist. And no Dippy Fresh, thank the glitter gods.

On the plus side, Mabel got to hang out with Xyler and Craz, who appeared to help her realize where she was and she was thankful.

Then, Xyler had to say something to her.

“Oh, right! I totally forgot to tell you that the Maiden wants to have tea with you!”

“The Maiden?” Mabel asked. Maiden? Oh, no! Did she accidentally conjure up Jennica?! Hopefully, she isn’t causing a rift to happen between Xyler and Craz like in Dream Boy High 2: Big Summer Blow Out!

“She’s waiting for you at your place,” Craz said, pointing over at a nearby corner building that resembled her castle in Mabeland, just smaller.

Seeing nothing else to do, Mabel headed on over there. She reaches for the door – barely noticing how she is colored shades of rose – and opens the door. Waiting for her on the other side was, in fact, this Maiden.

And she(?) wasn’t what Mabel expected when thinking ‘maiden.’

In Mabel’s honest opinion, the Maiden…wasn’t pretty. In fact, she looked dead. Like, all bones dead. And she wasn’t like that whitish color that bones have. She was all black, as though she was colored with charcoal. A striking contrast to all the colors surrounding them.

And her dress, while still somehow immaculate, was in tatters in certain areas, mainly around the lower portions of her dress and sleeves and there was dirt and grim staining the faded colors. It was like she died on her way to a Victorian party and was buried in the very dress she was wearing.

If anything, though, the Maiden’s dark hair was surprisingly fine and lengthy…like reeeaaally long. It spreaded out behind the Maiden, covering almost every surface on that side of the room and hanging off furniture and lamps, like dark, silky veils.

That side of the room looked dimmer, like the dark tresses seemed to be absorbing the color.

The Maiden sat at the tea table with a saucer in hand. Another set sat patiently across from her, waiting for Mabel to take a seat.

And Mabel cautiously did, watching the Maiden’s movements. The Maiden moved to take a sip of tea – prompting Mabel to notice her long and sharp canines and empty eye sockets – and no tea spelt out.

“Um…hi?” Mabel said nervously.

In fluid motion like an old-timey lady, the Maiden gestured to Mabel's waiting cup with her slender, bone hand.

Realizing that the Maiden wanted her to take the tea cup, Mabel carefully picks up the piece of china. She wasn’t sure what to do until the Maiden made another gesture. At first, Mabel thought the skeletal figure wanted her to drink it…which was something Mabel didn’t want to do, until she realized the Maiden just wanted her to look at it.

So, Mabel peered inside the cup, seeing that the ‘tea’ was swirling unnaturally, like a vortex or galaxy. In the middle was a – very familiar – ‘X’ shape… She couldn’t shake her gaze away from it, even as something dark and oily started to taint the ‘tea’...

She blinks awake in the morning, inside of her bedroom. Waddles was asleep in his piggie bed, unaware of Mabel’s newfound uneasiness to what she had witnessed.

She glances over to her nightstand to see a clipboard with some paper on it and a pencil, placed there last night when Mabel was brainstorming a knitting project.

Mabel seats up in bed and takes the clipboard and pencil and begins to draw.

Once finished, she stared at the crud drawing of the Maiden and her rose-colored self and the tea.

She also drew a question mark between them, unsure what to make of the whole thing.

9:55 and i'm 402 cals in 👯‍♀️ /s

this morning i:

scrolled my followed tumblr tags

made breakfast (high protein bagel + cheese spread, sm lower calories than butter and you don't need much)

watched half of 'To the Bone', i've been avoiding bc i thought i'd find keanu reeves weird in this style of film but nah. made sure to not eat while watching, about half of my snacking is passive, from when i'm consuming media, so i'm trying to break the habit with fidget toys and gum. seems to work! i do think about snacking but i don't feel i have to, it's just a tiny itch atp

had my fave crisps (walkers pickled onion). i feel so guilty but i'm gonna try burn the 125cals extra to my normal amount

and now i'm back in bed listening to yeule, crystal castles and similar artists and am doing half arsed sit ups between songs, whilst scrolling tumblr and chewing gum,, ofc.

i believe my uncle's going on an 18k step walk today, i've tried to message him so i can join but he hasn't responded in 2 hours. my only worries are he goes without me or he makes me have a meal once we reach the destination (a pub).

goals for today are:

at least ×3 15min exercises

6k steps (aiming low as not sure if i can join my uncle)

fast from 5pm today - 1pm tomorrow, 20 hour

stay under cal limit (650, but capped at 715)

did ×2 15 min exercises but one of them was for 74mins (363cal) so i'm gonna give myself a pass... i did snack afterward though ffs.

as for steps, my mum made me stay home but i did manage to get 6.8k in the end! went up and down stairs for as long as possible before they got back, had minimal breaks cos i didn't know when they'd be back.

i last ate just now so now we hold off until 1 tomorrah 🤞 EZ

i'm pissed at myself for eating so unhealthy though. thats my fault for buying sm snacks, i made sure they're all below 150cals but thats still way too much... i can't find my 63cal or 50cal snacks anywhere so i needed to get something, else id eat the other snacks in the house and they're much higher. anyway, gonna do a few crunches, then am off for some well deserved sleep x

summary yn is a famous musician who has always dreamt of having her own castle to explore, no school to attend and a simple life. prince park sunghoon, on the other hand, would rather see the world from a stage than staying inside of his family’s enormous castle, being obliged to attend important, royal meetings. eventually, yn is invited one day at the park’s castle to meet the royal family before performing at the annual Hybe beneficial concert, and that’s where she meets sunghoon, who has finally convinced his parents to let him attend the famous “HAC”. but the next thing they know is that they’re in the other’s body.

first look at the monster high g3 animated series

alright rather than bombard u all with a series of posts im just gonna go in for a second watch and put a play by play of my impressions under the cut. reader beware: its going to be long and stupid as hell.

0:18 the new design for the school is kind of amazing. like part of me misses the more traditional spooky-gothic-castle but like i cant deny that the big lightning bolts look cool af and i do think it has more character than the g2 which imo just kind of looked like. a school.

0:33 new spectra is soo cute lol she wasnt anywhere near my fav in the old series but smth about the big flowy purple curls is rly charming me this time around

1:10 i rly like a lot of these background monster designs. this zombie girl in particular is very cute and also i think i spied a werewolf boy in the back who i liked.

1:19 still obsessed with this cleo design. hope future dolls get better at capturing her charm and in general they stop being so weird abt her race and skin color. also for all that ive seen folks worry that this gens cutesier design will mean taking out the more horror-adjacent elements for the sake of better fitting the typical Girl Toy brand, im so happy to see mh3 doesnt shy away from a bit of tasteful gore <3

2:08 i wasnt sure where to put this part but im still sort of struggling with this concept of monsters hating witches, especially considering in this version witches arent like a separate monster-adjacent species (rip casta fierce) rather witchcraft just seems to be something anyone can learn to do? i dont entirely hate it i just dont get it i guess. i do think itd be fun if later there was like a witch high rival school. possible opening for the long awaited ever after high crossover event? anyone?

2:45 i know its just a vampire joke but in before g1 purists get mad abt the idea of g3 draculaura actually biting ppl even though shes a vegan in g1. i mean i think theyll probably keep that trait since its a handy way to avoid blood in a kids show and its sorta quirky-endearing to boot but i think itd rule if they let draculaura bite some people this time around tbhhh.

5:11 ok i know i said this when the sneak peak came out but the idea that heath is an actual demon and son of the literal DEVIL this time around, confirming that hell is real in monster high lore, is making me insane. i genuinely love it. wish theyd given heath some cute lil horns or a tail.

5:37 dracula being this like celebrity in the monster world i think is an interesting take but i feel like im gonna get so annoyed if his character starts showing up a lot. idk i dont hate it its just a weird vibe.

6:05 it took a while to click since clawdeen doesnt talk a lot in this ep but it is kind of weird hearing her (and draculaura) without an accent. i kinda found g1 draculauras voice a little grating at times so i dont mind that and i do rly like how clawdeen sounds more like an actual kid but idk i miss the accent

6:28 theres not a whole lot to say on deuce since hes only here for side gags in this ep but just wanted to go on the record with: i think hes cute

6:42 weirdly super enamored with the food-creatures, especially the burger lol. reminds me of bugsnax. also this whole fight sequence rly displays how far mh animation has come from rigid flash animations of a handful of stock characters. its neat.

9:08 lol ok i know its probably just another reference to dracula being bad with technology (cute trait for him tbh) but when i first saw this i couldnt help over-analyzing with my Lore Brain and wondering if it was also a reference to vampires not showing up on camera. but then i realized the kid he takes a pic with also has fangs and bat wings and shows up fine so thats probably not it, especially since drac canonically shows up fine in video.

9:50 the "bat out" reoccurring line is so incredibly cheesy it makes sense hes quoting it from some 70s b-movie he was in. but that doesnt make it any less cringey to me. also i know i said he kinda annoys me and he does but i do desperately wanna know how this bitch got into show business. drac backstory please. dracstory, if you will.

10:45 im reeeeally excited to see how this plot develops. i honestly assumed this series would be more like the web shorts except longer and more developed. as in, episodic and largely unrelated to one another, but im soo hype to see them doing something more serialized with overarching conflict and stakes. also we <3 classic troublemaking cant mind her own damn business toralei. like girl you have no reason for acting like this. she is simply a messy bitch.

final thoughts: really really liked it. love the visuals and the ways the new characterization plays with old beloved traits. love that this series has more of a familiar cartoon hijinks vibe rather than leaning too hard into it being like a Teen Girl Show just because the toys are first and foremost a fashion doll line. i dont know if im articulating that well i just mean i like that the girls are allowed to have like a full range of motion and action and emotion, and that they can be like gross and funny in addition to pretty. i think g1 had a good start in this regard but was definitely limited both by the animation and the expectation to follow that niche established by like barbie/bratz animated works (no hate to any of those either tho)

there are changes that ill need to get used to obviously, but i feel like the franchise is heading in a strong new direction. i saw some folks complaining that the bits about draculauras witchcraft and clawdeens half monster/half human felt like they were introduced as a means to employ annoying Fantasy Racism tropes, and thats a really valid criticism, but its also kind of something monster high has always done (with regards to monster/human conflict, certain monsters being discriminated against for certain traits, jackson jekylls entire character, etc).

i get the concern, but i feel like in a series so centered on embracing differences its kind of impossible to not include issues of discrimination, and it being a kids fantasy series, that does sometimes translate in a way that feels wonky or oversimplified at best. tho tbh monster highs execution regarding the subject always kind of felt to me like one of the better ones. idk. im just feeling good about this first look and excited to see how the show and the monster high franchise as a whole develops further as we move forward.

anyway stan g3 lagoona she deserves better than the g1 purists have been giving her.
