A Closer Look at Belle's Book: Part II

In Part I, I went into some detail about the illustration inside Belle's book, but now I want to turn the page, so to speak.

Thanks to the magic of 4K, I was able to zoom in on some details in Beauty and the Beast that I had never noticed before, and this time I wanted to see what story Belle was reading. I've seen theories that it was either foreshadowing Aladdin or referencing Sleeping Beauty, and I myself noticed that it bears some artistic resemblance to Snow White... but it turns out that it has nothing to do with Disney, or its fairy tales.

It's something else entirely, and it's in French!

After zooming in and studying each frame, I managed to make out the following text:

une languissante sirene! Enfin, il sera bientôt heureux, si c'est là ce qui doit causer son bonheur. Je sais que je suis agréable à regarder, puisque j'y ai du plaisir moi-même, et de ce plaisir je ne priverai pas mon mari, au contraire. Je ne sais si je l'aimerai, je l'espère; mais je veux qu'il m'aime lui, et je ferai pour lui plaire tout ce qui lui plaira. Ah! chère Adélaïde, je suis pleine de rêves absurdes et de pensées contradictoires! Je songe à des choses qui me semblent à la fois douces et vilaines, et j'ai des imaginations qui me font rougir en même temps que pleurer! Au moins, je ne m'ennuie pas. Je vis plus en une heure de ces journées que l'an passé je ne vécus en toute l'année. Chaque heure me renouvelle, me grandit et m'épanouit. Je me semble un rosier qui fleur rirait à vue d’œil, je suis fraîche et parfumée; je suis légère et forte: j'attends le bonheur. Paul est plus beau que je ne l'avais encore jamais tu. Il est pâle avec de grands yeux pleins de fièvre et d'amour. Je le trouve sublime quand il s'agenouille près de moi pour me regarder comme en prière. J'ai envie de le prière aussi, parfois, et de coucher ma joue sur ses genoux, mais quand j'ai cette envie-la, je me fâché contre moi-meme et je boude Paul.

Which, roughly translated into English, means:

a languid siren! Finally, he will soon be happy, if that is what will make him happy. I know that I am pleasant to look at, since I take pleasure in it myself, and of this pleasure I will not deprive my husband, on the contrary. I do not know if I will love him, I hope so; but I want him to love me, and I will do whatever he pleases to please him. Ah! dear Adelaide, I am full of absurd dreams and contradictory thoughts! I think of things that seem to me both sweet and ugly, and I have fantasies that make me blush and cry at the same time! At least, I am not bored. I live more in one hour of these days than I lived in the whole year last year. Each hour renews me, makes me grow and blossom. I seem to myself a rosebush that blooms laughing before my eyes, I am fresh and fragrant; I am light and strong: I await happiness. Paul is more handsome than I have ever seen him before. He is pale with big eyes full of fever and love. I find him sublime when he kneels down next to me to look at me as if in prayer. I want to pray to him too, sometimes, and to lay my cheek on his knees, but when I have this desire, I get angry with myself and I sulk at Paul.

By the way, there is one more sentence (maybe even two) at the bottom of the page that is partially obscured by Belle's shoulder and right hand. It may or may not be important to the rest of the excerpt, but for completion's sake, I'll share it here:

Il est ... maintenir un homme dans les ...

Which translates to:

He is ... to keep a man in the ...

Intriguing, isn't it? What was she trying to say?

Overall, the author appears to be an unwed woman dreaming of her future marriage to a man named Paul. Her confidante is someone named Adelaide, but I suspect she is actually writing to herself. Regardless, she is either betrothed to Paul or she longs to be, since she calls him her husband. Perhaps it is an arranged marriage? She goes on to dwell upon his handsomeness, and how she longs to be close to him, but then she gets angry at herself for feeling this way. The last line of the passage is incomplete, but my best guess is that the author is saying that Paul is not to blame for her sulking, so it is not right to keep a man in the dark, i.e. ignorant. I could be wrong, though. In any case, she is conflicted about her feelings on the matter. You could even say that her feelings are "new, and a bit alarming".

I can see why the filmmakers chose this passage for Belle's book.

It may not be a fairy tale, but it certainly has elements from the film. There are references to beauty, roses, imagination, and eyes filled with love, and passion.

Belle:

"Oh, isn't this amazing? It's my favorite part because—you’ll see Here's where she meets Prince Charming But she won't discover that it's him 'til Chapter Three!"

Do the lyrics match the story hinted at on the page itself? No, but I really respect the filmmakers for going out of their way to include this kind of detail in the film. They could have taken the easy way out, by writing out something like "Once upon a time" to echo the opening narration, or used "Lorem ipsem" Latin filler, or even meaningless brush strokes just to fill the page... but they didn't. They chose something in French that Belle herself might have liked to read. And I think that's really cool.

Intro: Reigen and Mob were assigned to complete an exorcism at an abandoned hotel, however there was a 90s throw-back festival that ended up slowing them down.

Warnings: None/Fluff

*brrrrr* *brrrr* Mobs phone rang, he picked up to see Reigen calling “Hello?” Mob says monotoned. “Hey Mob, it’s the usual, we have an exorcism down at the abandoned hotel from the 2000s.” Mob nods “Oh okay, but Master Reige-.” Reigen feeling exotic, cuts off Mob. On the other side of the phone he does his classic arm movements, “Don’t worry Mob, it’s going to be a breeze.” Mob was actually going to mention the fact that there would be a festival today and that there normal time would be slowed trying to bypass everyone. But as usual, he said nothing and went with it.

Mob showed up to the office, Reigen already prepared to leave. “Ah hey Mob! Is dimple with you?” Dimple appears out of hiding from Reigens annoyance. “Yup…right here.” “Alright let’s go!” Reigen takes a look at his phone while walking to check the newest news and he was the only one who didn’t know about the throwback festival, at the exact time they left the office.

“Hey….hey did you guys know about this?” Reigen says showing his phone to Mob and Dimple. “Yeah everybody knows, it’s an event that happens every decade.” Said Dimple, unfazed. Reigen shrugged a little disappointed, “We might go through some trouble, let’s hurry.” The group moves quickly towards the abandoned hotel, but it was too late. The festival had already begun so they had to slow down, however Mob and Dimple didn’t mind slowing down and watching. Mob was in awe at all the cultures and sub-genre’s of clothings from years before.

“Wow master Reigen, these people are really having fun!” Reigen sighs in an unpleasant tone, “This is not what we came here to do, we wont get all the money if we don’t finish in time, lets get a move on and-.” Reigen turns while talking and walks into someone a part of the festival, your drink falls out your hand and onto the sidewalk. “Hey!” You say booming towards to group. “I hope you’re going to help me pay for that.”

Reigen with his eyes on the ground, says “listen ma’am we don’t have time….time…TIME…?” He looks up and takes a look at your flashy physique and makeup. Mob and Dimple look just as astonished. “Uhhhh” Reigen is at a loss for words. Mob however really wanted to speak to you, everyone at this festival has seemed so unique and joyous. “I really like your style miss..” you look at the boy and grin slightly, still a bit angered your drink was spilled. “No need to be formal, im y/n!” Reigen butts in “Well y/n we have an important job to do, really i do apologize for the inconvenience but we really gotta go.”

You take a look at the man,

Hes quite handsome..

His suit is ironed with a tight fit around his chest and legs, showing very slight muscle. His eyes with a bland but seemly seductive aura beams towards your own eyes. His hair, a bit frizzled but still neat. Taking a closer look he appears to have tiny freckled spots and smooth lips. “Ah right.” Reigen may or may not have a soft spot for your cute face and exaggerated eye makeup, he finds it attractive. “Well y/n, heres my card. Anyway Mob let’s go! We’re gonna be late!”

“Oh..bye y/n!” Mob waves, you wave back with a smile.

The group runs off and you stand there with the card and look down, ha. Fake business card, its just his number.

Dimple swoops over to Reigen. “I definitely saw that, looks like someone is trying out new things these days.”

“Shut up dimple.”

In the middle of the night, someone is entering RWBY'S dorm

*poke poke*

Yang: Mghn.... zzzzz

*poke poke*

Yang: *mumbling* Ruby, stop it, it's too early-

???: *whispering* Yang, i need your help.

Yang: *still half asleep* ... Jaune? Why are you...

Jaune: You got a motorcycle, right? I need to use i-

Yang: *now fully waking up* Woah there! Bumblebee isn't something that i- mfhm!?

Jaune: *placing his hand on her mouth, making a silence gesture* Don't wake up the other.

Yang: ... *Slowly nod*

Jaune: *removing his hand* Now, i know Bumblebee is like your baby, and i wouldn't ask you for help if i didn't have to leave but-

Yang: *aghast but still whispering* You are leaving!? W-why?! *As her eyes get used to the dark, she can see that Jaune is in his complete armor.* Does it have anything to do with what happened yesterday?

Jaune: *looking away* It's... nothing any of you should be worried about. I don't want anyone else to be hurt.

Yang: ... *Shaking her head* I can't just let you go alone, just wait for me and-

Jaune: *fear in his eyes* No!

RWB_: *Waking up from the sound*

Ruby: *looking at the source of the sound* What the... Jaune?

Weiss: *taking her scroll to get a bit more light* Why are you here!?

Blake: *take one look at him* ... You know, if you wanted time alone with Yang, you should have told me.

Jaune: ... Shit.

Weiss: *massaging her temples* So let me get this straight; you enter into our dorm in the middle of the night in full fighting gear so you could get Yang motorcycle to go fight an evil man in Vale... *Look at Blake* Ever got an impression of déjà vue?

Jaune: *sigh* That's the best i can say, yes.

Ruby: But why don't you want our help?

Jaune: ...

Yang: Wait... Is that man..?

Jaune: *looking at the ground* He was one of them, yes.

Yang: *eyes glowing red* And you wanted to go fight him alone!? Didn't you warn Blake of the same thing?! That she would get killed if she tried going against the White Fang by herself?

Jaune: *shaking his head* It's not the same, nothing is the same.

Blake: Ok, that will be the kettle calling the pot black, but what do you mean it's not the same? I almost died at the dock and against the mecha. Had it not been for my team...

The room turn silent

Jaune: Forced? I was forced to see a bunch of kids die while they drained me of my blood for that damn crest! But when it came to killing the slavers, you think i hesitated?! When it comes down to killing a man in cold blood, i highly doubt any of you could deal with the guilt! And look at me! I'm perfectly fine!

Yang: No you are not! You told us how awful you felt after killing them even if it was to save others!

Yang: *flinching, then goes to say her piece of mind before stopping, as she sees him cry*

Jaune: *trying to wipe his tears* I CAN'T LET YOU GET HURT DAMN IT! I-I CAN'T PUT ANYONE IN DANGER! I... I WON'T LET ANYONE ELSE LIVE THROUGH WHAT I DID! I... I...*Looking at Yang, tears falling slowly* i can't live with the thoughts of my friends getting hurt or killed...

???: *sigh* And what about us? Aren't we allowed to not see you hurt?

RWBY+J: *turning to the door, seeing the rest of team JNPR*

Pyrrha: *crossing her arms* Imagine how horrible WE would feel if anything happened to you.

Nora: *sniffling* I don't want to see more people go...

Ren: And even less our fearless leader.

Jaune: *sigh* Guys- *get slapped*

Ren: *looking at Jaune in the eyes* You really thought you were the only one who had it rough during the years? I saw my village get destroyed, the few survivors getting either kidnapped or killed. You think i... No, *point to Nora then himself* WE never wanted to avenge them? Nora also has a crest, what do you think we had to do so she wouldn't get caught?

Jaune: ... *Sigh* I just... I just wanted to protect you guys-

Pyrrha: *shaking her head* No, you wanted to die a hero, try redeeming yourself by fighting someone who is far above us in terms of power.

Literally had that thought not a second ago and I missed babbling about things I like soooo much and Aventurine and Ratio are just the best to inspire

Nous putting their gaze towards Aventurine.

I know he's not "book smart" but there are a looot of different sides of knowledge, plus the fact that he's almost completely detached from the world ??? That he doesn't care about his life and everything and everyone he loved disappeared and now he can't form meaningful relationships by fear of killing them ? His luck that is so curious but also terrible and immediately puts him apart from others ?

Also the VeriVasha angst...

Ratio, in my point of vue, did have the dream of becoming a Genius. Maybe his parents had big expectations (linking that to the name Veritas can also build looots of angst), maybe he just viewed them as perfect and like we say "Never meet your heroes", maybe he wanted to prove something... Either way, he realised that most of Genuises are truly terrible people because they are ready to make gruesome sacrifices in the name of knowledge.

And Ratio will never be gazed by Nous because he cares so much. His humanity and kindness are the things that make him so lovable but also that are hindering a "great possibility", it's Greek tragedy at this point : the hero that wants to attain their goal but the very nature of themselves is in contradiction with this goal and so they will always chase but never catch. Ratio also learned that he cared and after raging and many questions as to why, he manages to get out of this embellishment about the Genuis Society. After all, he doesn't need to be a Genius to gain knowledge, and he feels like he helps much better bringing knowledge to people instead of stealing it or weaponizing it. He considers himself a fool because for him, it's humanity at it's finest : a bit of knowledge but also silliness and care. He doesn't see himself above the others much than what is facts : he knows he's smart by many worlds standards, that he's beautiful but he doesn't think of himself as flawless or completely above others. When Aventurine is gazed by Nous, Ratio first feels a tiny bit of jealousy -even if he isn't desperate to be recognised, he still feels envy and longing- but it's quickly, too quickly erased by a wave of worry.

He knows now some conditions to be a Genius and it terrifies him to see his partner (together or not at this point, whichever brings the most angst ooor they could have a thing on and off and Aventurine doesn't dare crossing the line by fear of losing Ratio and Ratio doesn't want to cross any boundaries) being in such a state that an Aeon that is promoting a sort of apathy and detachment of humanity

I think he would be so scared even just to lose Aventurine, he already seem so far most of tge time and this newfound recognition might be a tipping point or just the sign that he is already gone.

Did Prieur Claude Antoine really have a daughter with Madame Vêtu in 1788 (or is it just a strong possibility)?

Whether Prieur had a daughter with Catherine-Elisabeth Vétu, born Joly, is something we can never know for sure, unless we go back in time and ask them. However, according to both Paul Arbelet and Georges Bouchard, who had the chance of having access to Prieur's complete collection of personal papers, there's strong evidence that the latter might have truly been the biological father of Madame Vétu's last child.

Before delving into the matter, allow me a little digression on how Prieur and Catherine came to know each other.

The two met in 1785, when he was 22 and she was 29; yes, she was seven years older than him! The former moved to Dijon both for military duty and to assist Louis-Bernard Guyton in his scientific works. The young officer needed a place to stay and one of the rooms of the Vétu family house revealed itself to be the most suitable for him. Bouchard guessed that the two might have become close very soon, allowing Prieur to eat and sleep there for free since his low salary at the time wouldn't have allowed him to always pay the rent. (1)

Not a far-fetched speculation, considering Catherine’s lively character and active participation in the management of her husband's grocery store; at that time managing a business implied a minimum of education and both a strong dedication and commitment to work; qualities that Prieur appreciated and admired in a person. On the other hand, Catherine, despite the age gap, must have been impressed by Prieur's reserved, hardworking character and polite manners, something that her husband seemed to be lacking. (2)

In 1785 Catherine already had two children, Pierre, 9 years old and Bernard, 7 years old; three years later, her last one, Claudine was born. Prieur was chosen as godfather, or offered to be.

As mentioned before, the supposition that Claude-Antoine might have been more than a simple godfather stems from some facts that for Arbelet and Bouchard are pretty emblematic: In Prieur's personal notes, there's a date written down by him and another one right next to it, which not only corresponds to Claudine's birthday, but it's curiously nine months distant from the first date. I’m not an expert on 18th century customs, but it’s not unlikely that men wrote down the date in which they had intercourses with a woman to know if they were the father of the child that might have later been born. When Claudine was 17, Prieur arranged a marriage between her and a friend of his, Drappier, to whom he later associated the business the former was running at the time; at the time these engagements for a girl were her father’s or her guardian’s duty. When Prieur wrote his testament, he left quite a sum of francs to Claudine's son as inheritance and lastly, there's also a letter from an old garrison fellow of Prieur, in which there's written "I wish good morning to you and your women". (4)

I’d like also to add that from the bits of their correspondence shared by Bouchard and the overall treatment Prieur reserved for her throughout her life, the two seemed to be pretty close, linked by an intimacy that goes beyond the one between a woman and an old family friend. He was always there for her, sent her various gifts and helped her financially. In my opinion, this further confirms the hypothesis that Claudine was his real daughter.

Why did he never adopt her, not even after Joseph Vétu’s death? It’s a question that those who wrote about Prieur never asked themselves, but that I personally wonder. The only thing I can think of right now, given my limited knowledge, is that he didn’t want to give her his surname and cause her to be persecuted. Despite never being the target of slander, he had been part of the revolutionary government responsible for the Terror and not a normal one, but a member of the “bloodthirsty Committee of Public Safety of Year II”: so was the view of the Great CSP during the Napoleonic Era and Restoration.

It’s Prieur himself that in a letter dated 1814 to General Marescot reveals he resigned from public life at the beginning of the century because he foresaw the persecution the members of the government prior to the Consulate would have endured. (5) If he had had a concern for his daughter, it would have been a legitimate one: Sadi Carnot couldn’t advance in the army, despite deserving it, and was denied some positions, because of the surname he bore.

Edit: thanks to @nesiacha 's detailed answer about inheritance and legitimate/illegitimate children during the First Empire a more plausible reason why Prieur decided not to legally adopt her lies in the fact that Claudine not only wouldn't been granted the same rights as a natural child as far as inheritance was concerned: she would have received significantly less; but also illegitimate children were often viewed in a very hostile and negative way, in some instances, even considered as "monstrosities in the social order" and a "real calamity for morals". He clearly didn't want to stain Claudine's honour. Last but not least, Prieur and Catherine-Elisabeth never married after Joseph Vétu's death and the latter recognised Claudine as his daughter when she was born, so I don't think it would have been easy for Prieur to pass over this.

Curiously in their correspondence, Claudine always calls Prieur "mon cher parrain" (= my dear godfather) and nothing in those letter hints at the fact she might have known her real father's identity.

On page 56 of Prieur’s biography, Bouchard affirms with confidence that the date of Thursday 1 December 1785 which Prieur wrote in his “Tableau du temps... depuis 1782 jusqu'en 1792.” - a sort of list of the main events of his life - corresponds to the latter’s unofficial engagement with Catherine. Considering that Prieur arrived in Dijon in August, it means it took them four months to fall in love with each other. Though, except for a vague remark on “a certain number of coincidences that would be too long to report”, Bouchard doesn’t explain in specific how he got to that conclusion.

From some letters and papers that Prieur kept, Joseph Vétu appeared as a “lousy and insignificant man” (G. Bouchard, p. 56).

Choisir la version de son forum

La première étape de la création d’un forum est de choisir parmi 6 versions différentes celle que vous souhaitez. Mais ce n’est pas forcément évident pour tout le monde, surtout quand on a aucune idée de ce que ces noms signifient !

A quoi ça sert, la « version » du forum ?

Pour simplifier, il s’agit de l’élément qui va déterminer la structure HTML de base de votre forum. PhpBB2 va par exemple faire une structure en tableaux (= avec <table>, <tr>, <td>) alors qu’Invision va faire une structure avec des éléments en flottement (=avec float, position) ModernBB et AwesomeBB sont beaucoup plus modernes que les autres et utilisent des standards comme flexbox et grid.

Globalement, ce choix ne vous empêchera pas de coder les choses comme vous le voulez par la suite si vous êtes déjà à l’aise avec vos templates, ce n’est que pour déterminer la structure de base, mais il est quand même important de partir sur une base de templates qui vous convient plutôt que d’avoir à tout transformer vous-même.

Comment choisir ?

— PhpBB2

Forumactif la décrit ainsi : « PhpBB2 est la version qui vous permet de totalement personnaliser votre forum. Si vous avez besoin d'un forum flexible et stable, n'hésitez pas à essayer cette version. » En réalité, toutes les versions permettent de personnaliser de A à Z son forum, c’est surtout la plus ancienne version sur la plateforme et elle est donc très datée, mais elle est toujours fonctionnelle.

Avantages

Beaucoup, beaucoup des LS disponibles sur les forums d’entraide sont des LS compatibles avec PhpBB2 seulement. Pour les utilisateurs de LS qui n’ont pas forcément de connaissances en HTML, la version PhpBB2 est plus riche en ressources. De plus, les tutoriels d’apprentissage sont aussi très souvent en PhpBB2, ce qui rend cette version très accessible… Malgré de nombreux désavantages.

Désavantages

La structure en elle-même n’est pas extrêmement claire pour les débutants, même si encore une fois la plupart des tutos d’apprentissage sont sur PhPBB2. De plus, elle ne donne pas forcément de bases très correctes puisque, comme je disais en introduction, cette structure est basée sur des tableaux et peut inciter à structurer tous vos futurs codes en tableaux là où des techniques plus actuelles permettraient de produire des codes nettement plus modernes et clairs. (En utilisant flexbox ou grid notamment, comme ce sera le cas dans Modern et AwesomeBB.)

— Invision

Forumactif la décrit ainsi : « Invision est une des versions les plus performantes de Forumactif, sa puissance et sa stabilité rendent cette version incontournable aux utilisateurs qui souhaitent exploiter au maximum leur forum. » Je conseillerais en effet plutôt cette version aux personnes déjà à l’aise avec le codage, puisqu’elle intègre des techniques plus modernes de codage… Qui ne sont déjà plus assez modernes.

Avantages

Elle est bien plus facile que PhpBB2 d’un point de vue codage. Les templates sont construits de façon bien plus claire et l’affichage du thème de base contient des petites choses sympathiques comme (entre autres) des catégories rétractables, et l’affichage de la liste des membres en petits blocs plutôt qu’en liste. Il permet également d’aligner les profils à gauche ou à droite dans les messages en utilisant un simple bouton dans le panneau d’admin (Général → Forum → Configuration → Structures des pages, option Position du profil dans les messages).

Désavantages

À nouveau, le désavantage majeur est le manque de LS/tutos sur cette version qui est pourtant très intéressante. À noter cependant qu’elle utilise les flottements (float et position) pour placer ses éléments, un standard aujourd’hui déprécié au profit de flexbox/grid. Cette version a quelques LS disponibles, mais les ressources et les aides demeurent limitées, car elle a été très vite éclipsée par ModernBB.

— ModernBB

Forumactif la décrit ainsi : « Le thème ModernBB permet de créer un forum design, simple et intuitif. Le code a été modernisé pour faciliter les personnalisations du forum. » En effet, le look de base est beaucoup plus plaisant et moderne que les versions précédentes ; et le code est beaucoup plus conforme aux standards de codage d’aujourd’hui, utilisant en majorité flexbox pour créer des colonnes. Il est donc aussi beaucoup plus clair pour apprendre à coder.

Avantages

L’affichage de base de ModernBB offre des fonctionnalités sympas, comme un header pleine largeur, une barre de navigation qui suit le scroll, les catégories rétractables, la position droite/gauche du profil dans les messages, et des statistiques qui s’affichent en footer du forum. De plus, elle est en partie responsive (c’est-à-dire qu’elle s’adapte aux petites largeurs d’écrans) avec un mode mobile-friendly. Récemment, Forumactif a aussi permis d’afficher des images dans la liste des sujets sous cette version.

On note également l’existence d’une ressource très utile, le Blank Theme de @code-lab, qui permet d’avoir une base propre et optimisée pour commencer à coder sur cette version et la rend beaucoup plus accessible aux débutants comme aux confirmés.

Désavantages

Bien qu’on pousse désormais pour que les ressources s’adaptent à cette version, il n’y en a toujours pas autant que pour PhpBB2. Néanmoins, cette version est celle qui est privilégiée désormais pour les nouveaux LS.

— AwesomeBB

Forumactif la décrit ainsi : « Le principal avantage de la version AwesomeBB est sa fonction responsive. Votre forum s'adapte à toutes les tailles d'écran, les membres peuvent ainsi discuter, partager des photos et chatter aussi bien sur PC que sur mobile. » Effectivement, cette version est entièrement responsive car elle est codée de façon moderne et cohérente avec les standards de codage actuels.

Avantages

AwesomeBB regroupe tous les avantages de ModernBB avec quelques différences d’affichage, notamment la prise en compte de la toolbar directement dans la barre de navigation, offrant des panneaux latéraux qui s’ouvrent au clic.

Désavantages

Il n’y a littéralement aucunes ressources disponibles en forum d’entraide pour cette version.

Changer de version

Il est possible de changer de version de forum à n’importe quel moment.

Panneau d’administration → Affichage → Choisir un thème → Onglet « Version »

Mais attention ! Puisque chaque version a sa propre structure HTML pour le forum, vos templates modifiés ne seront plus compatibles avec, et l'opération supprimera votre CSS. Certains javascripts peuvent aussi être incompatibles et devront être modifiés pour fonctionner. En clair, votre contenu (messages, avatars, comptes, etc…) sera sauf, néanmoins votre forum n’aura plus du tout la même apparence.

Et en résumé ?

Au final la véritable hésitation se situe entre PhpBB2 et ModernBB. Actuellement, l’offre des forums d’entraide permet surtout de se familiariser avec PhpBB2 qui est pourtant très vieillot. La version ModernBB est néanmoins très intéressante malgré le manque d’encadrement pour ceux qui veulent s’y lancer, et gagne en présence sur les nouveautés en LS/tutos.

Pour ceux qui ne souhaitent pas se plonger dans le code profond de leurs forums et simplement personnaliser l'apparence grâce au PA et aux images, le choix est nettement plus simple : basez vous simplement sur l'apparence de chaque version pour décider de la structure qui vous plaît le plus. Comment écrire un scénario de JDR ?

En tant qu’auteur de campagnes de JDR, j’ai passablement galéré pendant des années pour écrire des scénarios qui tiennent la route, qui ne soient pas facilement déraillés par les joueuses et joueurs mais qui ne leur donnent pas non plus l’impression d’avancer sur des rails, et qui leur donnent un sentiment d’immersion. A force de tâtonner, j’ai fini par trouver une méthode relativement efficace, en tous cas pour moi. Je vous propose donc de partager cette astuce. Évidemment ce qui marche pour quelqu’un ne marchera pas forcément pour un autre, mais si vous voulez vous lancer dans l’écriture de scénarios de JDR et que vous ne savez pas par où commencer, sait-on jamais, cela peut vous aider.

La première phase est de se constituer un brouillon. Commencez par jeter en vrac toutes vos idées, sans filtres : personnages, scènes cools, twists scénaristiques, éléments de gameplay… prenez le temps qu’il faut, laissez travailler votre esprit en tâche de fond. Puis organisez-les, voyez qu’est-ce qui marche avec quoi, qu’est-ce qui aurait le plus de sens d’un point de vue chronologique… et comblez les trous entre vos éléments. Cela vous donnera une première ébauche de scénario, qui peut tenir sur une ou deux pages.

A ce stade, les MJ les plus aventureux ont suffisamment d’éléments pour lancer une partie en improvisation. Cela demande un talent spécifique, et beaucoup de mémoire. Vous faites comme vous voulez, mais moi, à ce stade, j’en suis qu’au début de mes préparations.

Si vous voulez continuer à étoffer votre scénario, vous vous retrouvez confronté à deux problèmes : premièrement plus vous ajoutez de la structure, plus vous retirez de la liberté aux PJ parce que vous avez votre “canon” de ce qui est sensé se passer ; et deuxièmement vous risquez de passer à côté de trous dans le scénario que vos joueuses et joueurs ne manqueront pas de pointer du doigt en pleine partie. Et c’est là que vient l’astuce. 

Trouvez qui est l’antagoniste dans votre scénario (que ce soit un maître des ténèbres ou votre rival dans le concours du plus beau jardin, si votre JDR n’est pas un bac à sable il y a un antagoniste). Réécrivez votre scénario, de A à Z, de façon très détaillée… mais DU POINT DE VUE DE L’ANTAGONISTE, comme si les PJ étaient absents et/ou très naïfs et tombaient dans tous les pièges. Pourquoi ? Pour résoudre vos deux problèmes. D’une part vous ne maîtrisez pas les choix de vos joueuses et joueurs, mais vous maîtrisez ceux de vos PNJ, donc vous pouvez tout à fait mettre l’antagoniste sur des rails et le réorienter dès qu’il s’en écarte, sans nuire à la liberté des PJ. Et d’autre part en écrivant en détails le plan machiavélique du méchant vous avez plus de chances d’en voir les failles et de pouvoir les combler.

Une fois cela fait, identifiez les éléments clefs de ce plan, ceux sans lesquels l’antagoniste ne peut pas arriver à ses fins. Ces éléments sont vos “points fixes”. Votre mission, en tant que MJ, est de faire en sorte que ces points fixes se produisent quels que soient les choix des PJ, afin de les guider le long du scénario que vous avez prévu. Le reste du plan constitue les “points mobiles”, où les joueuses et joueurs auront beaucoup plus de liberté. Cela vous donne votre découpage, et vous pouvez compléter votre scénario en insérant l’histoire des PJ dans les points mobiles, de façon non dirigiste.

Il reste une dernière étape pour avoir un scénario complet. Maintenant que vous disposez de toutes les étapes, voire d’un découpage en chapitres en suivant les points fixes, vous pouvez faire trois listes : 

les lieux visités

les PNJ rencontrés

les éléments de lore importants

A l’aide de ces trois listes, vous pouvez réécrire une dernière fois votre scénario complet, en y intégrant le lore et les personnages et les lieux clefs. Vous avez une histoire riche, une force antagoniste bien plus redoutable et donnant plus de fil à retordre, et une liberté de mouvement garantie pour vos joueuses et joueurs.

Vous pouvez lancer votre partie à partir de là, en utilisant vos trois listes comme pense-bête.

Si par contre, comme moi, vous aimez tout planifier à l’avance, vous n’êtes qu’au début de votre préparation : chaque lieu, chaque PNJ, chaque point fixe et mobile vont avoir le droit à leur propre fiche, et un certain nombre d’éléments complémentaires vont encore être nécessaires. Mais on en parlera plus avant dans un futur article, donc restez connectés !

I discussed this a bit in a previous ask, but yes. Ivih was born with levinsickness, which we see affecting a young kid in Everkeep, as well as a hyune cleaner working in True Vue.

Pulling right from the other ask:

her days range from good (able to stroll down to True Vue with friends as long as she takes regular breaks) to awful (body pains, headaches, and paralysis enough to require in-house help)

Fortunately, Everkeep is well-equipped to accommodate people born with the condition, relatively frequent as it is. There are elevators to circumnavigate stairs, ramps into most places, and benches all over to take a break when she needs one.

Ivih also has mobility aids she uses on a regular basis. Most notable is a wheelchair, which she mostly pushes herself around on, but for the days when even that is hard to manage, she can switch it over to an electrope motor. The frame is her favorite color: bright fuckin' fuscia. It has stickers all over it from her favorite brands, bands, and she may have disabled some of the safeties on it so that it can reach some, let's say, unsafe speeds in areas where there are no guard rails, which is most of S9.

On days when even getting out of bed is difficult, Ivih has a few resources she can call on. Pure headcanon here, but I figure Everkeep has services in place that dispatches assisted living nurses to help out those who would benefit. But more often than not, she prefers to call on friends. One miss Selenite (@ahollowgrave) has been such a helping hand, and Ivih counts herself as lucky to have people as reliable and gorgeous as Nite.

All that is INSIDE the dome, however. Outside is a whole other story. With ambient aether that doesn't lean as heavily into lightning, Ivih's symptoms are drastically reduced, and she can function almost completely without the mobility aids that she normally relies on. What she'll struggle with out there is a set of different issues: restlessness and recklessness while she tests (and very quickly finds) her limits. Not to mention what would happen if she ever was hit with lightning-based magicks or discovers that, even in arid Shaaloani, there is a monsoon season with spectacular thunderstorms that will affect her just as severely as a bad day in the 'keep.

im out so this is just noting something i wanna think about more later: what is true vue? this part of solution nine seems to be sphenes blindspot. she wasnt shown visiting there, its where the anti govt organization hq is, the powers at play here rather than the government seem to be the rhodina consortium and ascension arcadia under its president, notably economic powers. why does this area feel like our regular capitalist cyberpunk dystopia inside a city that otherwise is more utopic? the guy who snapped at sphene in msq was from here too. and contrast how compassionate she was to the kid with levinsickness in the residential area while the guy in true vue blues got extorted because of his levinsickness, like its a Thing there to exploit chronically ill people?? also the whole thing about the arcadion we already know. so why was my perfect niceys king completely unaware and unconcerned with these things happening in her own fucking domain? has the right of rule really been handed to the capital holders of the city? is rhodina the reflection of rowena and the true face of evil in solution nine????

Cette coiffure, pour jeune dame, convient à une chevelure ondulée de longueur moyenne.

On partage les cheveux d'une oreille à l'autre, on relève la partie de derrière, on la noue au moyen d'un ruban. Booooon le jardin commence à reprendre une forme de jardin, les oiseaux font bombance et remplissent tout l'espace auditif disponible et c'est tellement bon. Des fleurs apparaissent par endroits, et des bourgeons déjà ouverts:

Un mur de bûches a fait son apparition dans le fond du jardin, pas trop haut parce que je veux profiter de la vue, et d'autres murs apparaîtront, autant cachés que possible. L'un derrière l'abri de jardin où j'ai récupéré la terre en préparation dans les composts, un autre très probablement sur le côté nord du terrain... Il y a encore beaucoup beaucoup beaucoup à faire mais on se voit enfin avancer, j'ai fendu du bois presque tous les jours de cette semaine et c'est fou ce que c'est un sport complet, il n'y a pas un seul muscle de mon corps qui ne me fait pas souffrir. J'ai hâte de mesurer les tas de bois pour calculer combien de stères auront été fendues.

I wrote a really negative rant post about All For the Game fanfic, so I want to write a positive one. I really do love this fandom, and it’s fanfics, and I want to share the love as well.

By category, here are some fics I love.

Time Travel

Once More by AkemiAsh I just call this The All For The Game Time Travel Fic in my head. It has a really interesting take on Neil and Andrew going back in time all the way to high school. It will probably never be finished, but I still love rereading it.

One More Time (With Feeling) by elesary All of elesary's fics are wonderful and there are several on this list. Many are unfinished, and though the author tends to update a new chapter every week, they rotate between fics. So if you don't like unfinished fics, this is not the one for you. However, if you want a time travel fic with Neil and Andrew going back to their first year at Palmetto, with really interesting characterization and relationship dynamics, this is the fic for you.

Amnesia

Back To The Start by fuzzballsheltiepants There's a lot of fuzzballsheltiepants on this list because they're an absolutely brilliant writer. You can't go wrong with any of their fics. Please note that they are locked though, so you will need an AO3 account to view them.

Muscle Memory by elesary Andrew wakes up in the hospital with no memory of the past few years. It's incredibly in-character and wonderful.

Presque Vue by elesary Neil wakes up in the hospital with no memory of anything since Andrew drugged him at Eden's. Really interesting start! Unfinished so far.

Raven!Neil

Black As the Raven Is, He’ll Get a Partner by nekojita I think this counts as a fandom classic, but it's my favorite Raven!Neil fic so I had to mention it anyway. The Ravens find Neil after he turns down the Foxes' offer to play at Palmetto and he is a Raven from the beginning of his college career. Featuring Neil & Jean friendship and really, really slow-burn Andreil. Mind the warnings for graphic violence and rape (I think it's slightly worse than canon)

Ever More Raven Neil (series) by ynnon this is a recent series where Neil goes to Evermore for Christmas and never leaves. It has two complete installments thus far but the series is technically unfinished. It is one of the most original takes on Raven!Neil I have ever seen and the writing is spectacular. I can't recommend it enough.

Neil’s Asexuality

Swinging Along the Z Axis by SpangleBangle Neil and Andrew discuss what attraction is like for Neil.

Sliding Doors by Moth2Flame Neil and Andrew never kiss during their time at Palmetto. Neil and Robin figure out their asexuality together, and Neil and Andrew get together years later.

The Test & All The Little Lights by fuzzballsheltiepants The first fic really focuses on Andrew, the second on Neil. I call this the "Willing vs. Want To" fic in my head and think it's a really interesting exploration of asexuality (particularly in the second installment).

Random Andreil

Not Nothing by TheRainbowElectric Possibly the most brilliant AFTG fic in existence. I cannot hype it up enough. Seriously, just go read it.

Except When It’s No by TheRainbowElectric The one where they try handcuffs and it goes badly. Based off Nora’s extra content.

Out of the Ashes by puddlejumper99 Neil and Andrew meet pre-canon when, after his mother’s death, Neil starts attending high school in Columbia instead of Millport.

A Mewment Like This by fuzzballsheltiepants I'm usually not the biggest fan of AUs, but this one is wonderful. Andrew and Neil meet at the vet because they both have cats with stupid names. It might sound fluffy, and it is clever and funny, but it also explores some of the darker themes and character development that happen in the books.

if every time we touch, you get this kind of rush by Talls This fic has Andrew and Matt kissing (still with Andreil and Matt/Dan as the main ships) and it sounds absolutely insane but just trust me, you have to read it. This is also possibly the best-written makeout scene I have ever read in my life.
