Mark Rothko - Paintings on Paper opens in Oslo!
The Mark Rothko: Paintings On Paper is a stunning exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, in collaboration with the National Museum, Oslo. The exhibition opened at the National Gallery of Art on 17 November 2023, and opens in the National Museum on 16 May 2024.
This exhibition marks the first major presentation of the work of Mark Rothko in the Nordic countries. The Washington DC presentation of this exhibit was revelatory experience, and I highly recommend it.
This exhibition examines approximately 100 paintings on paper made throughout Rothko's career, from figurative works of the 1930s, to mythological and surrealist works of the 1940s, to works from the 1950s and 1960s painted in the artist’s signature format: soft-edged rectangular fields arranged against monochrome backgrounds. Centering these paintings on paper offers a new view of the development of Rothko’s oeuvre.
I have always felt a special emotional attachment to Rothko's late period, and the show has many key examples of this. However, don't sleep on the early works, which until recently were often plagued by old, inferior scans. For me, seeing these  in person, especially the watercolors of his "surrealist" period, made me gain an appreciation for how beautifully layered and constructed these paintings really are. The Rothko that we know and love later is present there in his translucent use of color
The exhibition is accompanied by a research-based publication written by Adam Greenhalgh of the National Gallery of Art, and an introductory book about Mark Rothko, written by Karianne Ommundsen and Øystein Ustvedt of the National Museum.
If you are in the area, do not miss this.

The disregard of Tim, Kon and Cassie, who were once destined to be ‘the next generation of heroes’, for bloodlines is something so interesting to me.
Once again a writers need to outdo those beforehand has made the medium suffer as a result.
The idea of found family has always been big in comics, from sidekicks to friends and teams. Having relationships with others, being able to support fellow heroes has always been such a goldmine of stories. It’s a reason why the JL was created after all. To be a hub for all things hero.
Now we just get ‘these kids need to live up to the mantle of their parents’ which is something that’s been explored over and over again in many different genres. And even in DC Comics because the sidekicks also have that angle.
But we are suppose to believe that for Damian, Jon and Lizzie it’s just ‘more’. But, as a writer, you cant really do that without lessening those who came before them and what they represented.
So you get this gallery of heroes, Tim, Cassie and Kon, who just… don’t matter anymore… despite being so popular in the 90’s, being the quintessential teenage heroes that the Titans grew out of. They are irrelevant, they haven’t grown up, they’ve been replaced and no one has no idea what to do with them.
But they still have the potential to be some of the best representation of queer, relatable comedic fun (bcus what was YJ if not then driving into nuns with explosives???) that the serious comics of today are sorely missing.
They just need a good writer.

my bad if this has been asked before but, who's your favorite DC hero? Or superhero other than spiderman? and for that matter, do you have any investment or knowledge in DC or are you a Marvel-only individual?
I don’t have nearly AS MUCH investment in DC but i do still like it a lot! Picking a favorite from DC is much harder as in the case of Spider-Man he’s not just my favorite Marvel hero but he’s also like…. my favorite fictional character of all time. So it kinda comes standard with that territory LOL.
HOWEVER, I can definitely say that Batman has some extremely compelling stories and though I wouldn’t consider myself a super fan or anything I definitely lovvvveeee some good Batman media. He also arguably has the best superhero rogue’s gallery apart from Spidey, so that helps. I know I meme about The Jokester™️ a lot but he truly is one of the greats and an undeniably striking presence at his best. I also love Green Lantern simply cause I think his power set fucks severely, but I know next to nothing about his actual lore unfortunately.
I would be remiss to not mention as well how much Young Justice has introduced me to some new favorites. Artemis/Tigress, Zatanna, Miss Martian, Blue Beetle, Dick Grayson/Nightwing. All fantastic, and that’s not even all the ones I love haha. It’s good stuff!

Okay, so I'm sure people are plenty familiar with Peter Parker and DC crossover fics, right?
However, I'd like to suggest: imagine if the DC universe is a canon comic book series and whatnot in the MCU, and vis versa?
Peter ends up in Gotham and is immediately (almost concerningly so) familiar with the rogue gallery, the vigilantes, and where relatively safe locations are. The Bats suddenly see who looks to be Peter Parker, and after they hear him talking about missing his dad, Tony, they're certain he's either way too far into a bit, or the MCU is real somewhere.
Bonus: Peter and one of the Bats meet each other in costume or something, and they both point at the other exclaiming "you're my favorite character!" or something, before they both go silent, realizing what they just said-

Hot Chocolate (Marcus Pike x gn!reader)
A Merry Fic-Mas - December 3
Tumblr media
Part of A Merry Fic-Mas: A Holiday Fic Calendar - click for masterlist. FYI: I'm having so much trouble with taglists at the moment that I'm not going to use them for now - if you want to keep updated, turn on notifications for my posts.
Pairing: Marcus Pike x gn!reader
Rating: Mature
Word count: 1280 words
Warnings: Implied smut, some heavy making out, Marcus being an adorable foodie romantic art nerd, fluff city. No use of Y/N and no physical descriptions of Reader whatsoever.
Summary: Snowed in and forced to stay over at your colleague’s Georgetown apartment, Marcus whips up a sweet treat to keep you warm.
Tumblr media
“I don’t have much by way of dessert,” Marcus muses from the kitchen, where he’s peering into his fridge.
You finish gathering the last of the takeout boxes from his dining table and begin cleaning them out at the sink. “You’ve given me a room for the night, Marcus, I don’t need dessert. Hey, where’s your recycling bin?”
He gestures to a cupboard near the sink and leans back on the counter, thinking. “Actually, would you like some hot chocolate? I think I’ve got everything I need.”
Everything he needs?, you think, wondering what more you could possibly need for hot chocolate beyond some powdered mix and milk. Marshmallows, if you were feeling fancy.
“Sure, sounds good to me.”
He grins in delight and starts rummaging in a cupboard, emerging with bars of dark chocolate and a jar of ground cinnamon, before delving into the fridge and retrieving milk and heavy cream. A heavy-bottomed saucepan is produced and positioned on the hob as Marcus mutters something about finding his grater.
This isn’t going to be cheap-ass powdered mix, is it.
Tumblr media
Alright, full disclosure: if someone hooked you up to a polygraph machine and asked you if you had a teeny tiny harmless little workplace crush on Marcus Pike, you’d have to answer in the affirmative.
And who wouldn’t? He was kind and funny, and smart as hell, quietly undertaking a PhD in art history and cultural policy at Georgetown while continuing to work full-time. He was one of the few people in the team who actually kept up with the art world, regularly seeking you out after a new show opened at the National Gallery to exchange your thoughts on it over coffee in the canteen.
The fact that he was also really cute didn’t hurt, either.
When snow and ice blocked the routes out of DC back to your place in Alexandria, leaving you stranded, Marcus immediately suggested that you stay over at his place. See? Kind.
“I’ll be fine, Marcus, really,” you’d protested, searching for hotel rooms in the city and recoiling when you saw the prices - and the lack of options. “Anyway, isn’t your place a one-bed?”
Marcus shrugged. “I’ve got a big couch, spare blankets and pillows, and I won’t stand by and see you hunkering down here for the night. C’mon. We’ll get takeout - I know a great little Korean place.”
Tumblr media
He carefully grates the dark chocolate into a bowl while you whisk most of the cream.
“Y’know, I really thought you were going to pull out a couple of sachets of Swiss Miss? I should have known better.”
Marcus chuckles to himself and checks the saucepan of milk. “Usually I’m a Swiss Miss kinda guy, I have to admit. But when you have guests, you do the Viennese hot chocolate. I like to make a fuss.”
You hold out the bowl of cream for him to inspect and he nods, eyes crinkling as he smiles at you. You put it down and fold your arms as you watch him work.
“Is it really Viennese, or is that just a name they use to make it sound all fancy?”
He laughs and looks at you in mock horror. “Of course it’s really Viennese! I even had it for the first time in Vienna.” Marcus takes the saucepan off the heat and adds the chocolate along with some sugar, a little cinnamon, and a dash of heavy cream. He begins to whisk the mixture carefully.
“It was one summer when I was a student - I had almost no money, but I did have one of those European Interrail tickets and I tried to see as much great art as I could. Took an overnight train to Vienna to see the Klimts at the Belvedere.” He pauses his whisking to assess the texture, then resumes.
“Like I said, I was down to my last few dollars - or Euros, or whatever the currency was at the time - but the one thing I was gonna do besides see the Klimts was go to a real Viennese café.”
The hot chocolate is frothy now, thick and glossy. Marcus nods in the direction of a cupboard and you open it, finding some mugs.
“So I’m guessing you got to a café.”
He turns off the stove and smiles at the memory. “Sure did. Café Central. It was like something out of a Stefan Zweig novel.” He takes a ladle out of a drawer and proceeds to fill the mugs with the steaming chocolate. “And I had a mug of something a bit like this - but much, much better - and a slice of apple strudel, and it was heaven.”
Marcus finishes off the chocolate by placing a large dollop of whipped cream in each mug, and hands one to you.
Tumblr media
“This is…incredible. I don’t think I can ever go back to Swiss Miss.”
Marcus chuckles and sips his chocolate, sitting beside you on the couch. “I’m glad you like it. Perfect drink for a snowed-in night.”
You take another deep draught of the delicious, smooth drink and hum happily to yourself. “And I’m checking out flights to Vienna first chance I get.”
He looks at you intently. “Uh, you’ve… uh…”
You can see a giggle rising in his chest. He can’t suppress it, and he laughs out loud.
“Why is the thought of me going to Vienna so funny to you?”
Marcus’s expression shifts to one of concern and he quickly shakes his head. “No, that sounds wonderful - you’ll love it - it’s just…” He reaches over and gently rubs the tip of your nose with his thumb, removing a large blob of whipped cream. “You had a little, uh, something.”
“Oh. Oh. I’m sorry.” You look down into your mug, a little embarrassed, but try to lighten the mood. “Feels like we’re in a scene from a cheesy holiday movie, y’know?”
He quirks his head. “How so?”
“Oh, you know. The whole ‘one character has whipped cream or something on their face and the other has to swipe it away and then…’”
You stop short, realising what you were about to say - and becoming very aware of just how close you are to him now.
Marcus’s voice is warm and low. “And then?”
Is he moving closer?
“And then… um. And then they usually, uh…”
He finishes your sentence by leaning in and kissing you, softly, gently at first. Your breath hitches as you feel the softness of his lips on yours.
He breaks away for a second, staying close. “Is this okay?”
“Yeah, it’s…it’s great.”
He takes your mug and puts it on the coffee table before cradling your face in his big hands and leaning in to kiss you again: a little harder, now, his tongue seeking entry to your mouth as your hands reach for his body and you lean back on the couch.
You moan and whine with pleasure as you feel Marcus’s hands caressing your body, taste the bittersweetness of the chocolate on his lips and tongue. As he moves his mouth to your neck, sucking and nibbling and licking his way along the sensitive skin, you begin to unbutton his shirt and reach for his belt buckle.
“Marcus?”
He looks up for an instant, hair tousled and eyes as deep and dark and shiny as perfect hot chocolate.
“You’re not sleeping on the couch tonight. You’re keeping me warm in bed.”

i've found the song that perfectly describes the journey and dynamic of my dc self insert florian aka starling and jason todd; sound of silence by cody fry and sleeping at last.
their first meeting as little kids. them growing from acquaintances to friends to best friends. both avoiding talking about their families for different reasons.
jason losing his mom and his dad going missing. his homelessness where flo hangs out with him and brings food, water and books. his encounter with batman, the batmobile and a tire iron. his time at ma gunn's and florian still pushes his way through to visit him and bring him stuff while they hang out.
flo's time of split custody. going to visit jason at ma gunn's and finding him not there as he apparently was adopted and ma gunn's being shut down but hoping his best friend is okay. his mom getting primary custody and the lead up to his huge breakdown.
jason's time at the manor with his adoptive family. flo unlocking his first meta ability and being kicked out by his mom to encounter thaumus byrd (otherwise known as birdbrain, the reason for flo's bird dna in his veins). jason's debut as robin and finding his best friend is in the news as missing.
flo's captivity which had him raised as if a 'child' to birdbrain in his warehouse refurbished into a home. his schooling, therapy, further experimentation and time as iris.
iris delivering messages for the gotham's rogue gallery and getting caught in a crossfire which batman and robin interrupt. jason's robin tries to talk to him and iris runs.
the garzonas case. jason finding the letter and wanting to explore about his mother. joker beating him with a crowbar and dying in the explosion at the warehouse.
flo plans his escape to be after he graduates. jason crawls out of his grave and the league takes him. jason spends time in the league and is dipped in a lazarus pit. florian escapes from birdbrain and begins a life of his own.
florian dons his old iris costume and debuts as his dna namesake; starling. jason finishes training and returns to gotham to debut as red hood.
starling rescues a civilian jason from captivity where he was being beaten by people he had fought to defend a shop from being robbed. they have that feeling of familiarity.
starling rescues punk aka morgan lee ankwicz (my friend's oc) from getting his ass kicked during a vigilante fight attempt.
batman rip happens (and all the extra goodies of that one year later era!). the misfits are formed to help in smaller time stuff while the batfam works big time. black mask holds up the museum flo works at as a civilian which red hood stops and saves him.
their first encounter both as civilians and the hugging tearful reunion that follows. relearning their friendship which blossoms into more than.
they start dating and have to plan how the fuck to break the news to their friends (and also family which he denies is his family in jason's case).
them sitting on a rooftop side by side with flo's head on jason's shoulder, the background with a translucent image of them doing the same thing as kids.

So you really liked My Adventures with Superman... and you want more Supes!
Tumblr media
I know quite a lot of people had their proper Superman introduction through MAWS, and are now curious to experience some more of him and his family. I can help you there! This post will go through some movies and TV shows you can check out for some more Superman greatness.
As a note, I'm not much of a comics person, so if you're interested in that I will plug @luthwhore's Superman Recommended Reading list.
Movies
Tumblr media
Superman: Man of Tomorrow
This movie is an origin story for Superman, and it's pretty good! It borrows from several of his comics origins without directly adapting any of them. It understands the core appeal of his character, this time placing a heavy focus on Superman as an immigrant to Earth to explore the dichotomy of being both human and alien. This is the beginning of a shared universe of DC films known as the Tomorrowverse, which you can check out if you like. Personally I felt the other films were very hit and miss, but your mileage may vary.
Tumblr media
Superman (1978)
This is one of those movies that's so iconic everyone should see it at least once. Christopher Reeve is the definitive live-action Superman for a lot of people, and it's very easy to see why -- he's one of the few actors who can really sell Clark and Superman feeling like separate people. It's also had an extremely heavy influence on lots of Superman stories going forward, even bleeding back into the comics. If you enjoy this movie, you can continue with its sequels. Superman II is solid, but Superman III, Superman IV, and Supergirl are all a bit of a mess. There's also the 2006 movie Superman Returns, which picks up right after Superman II with a new cast.
Tumblr media
The Death of Superman / Reign of the Supermen
The Death of Superman is perhaps the most iconic arc in Superman comics, but it's not really accessible to newcomers. This pair of films changes that, and is, in my humble opinion, better than the comic story it's based on. Both Clark and Lois have some great characterization, and it features the origins of Superboy and Steel. These movies are part of the DCAMU, a shared universe of films, but you don't need to see any of the others to follow along. That being said, some of them are also pretty good, so you can expand out to those if you're interested.
Tumblr media
Superman/Batman: Public Enemies & Apocalypse
This is a pair of animated films focusing on a team-up between Superman and Batman, and they're both a ton of fun. The two characters have a great dynamic that tends to not get captured well outside of the comics. These films are technically connected, but you could watch either one independently of the other.
Tumblr media
Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons
This film focuses on Superman and Batman's sons, Jon Kent and Damian Wayne, as they are forced to work together to save the world when their parents are out of action. It's absolutely delightful and a wonderful introduction to the Super Sons.
TV
Tumblr media
Superman: The Animated Series
If you want a solid overview of golden age Superman, his recurring characters, his rogues gallery, etc., this is absolutely the place to go. It's charming, it's well-made, and it's just fun. This series is also set in the DCAU, a shared universe that includes Batman: The Animated Series, Justice League, Batman Beyond, and more. You can continue to these other shows if you'd like to see Superman with other Justice League members.
Tumblr media
Superman & Lois
This show follows an older Clark and Lois as they manage raising teenage sons in their superhero world. It's a very different vibe than other Superman stories, being a more character-driven family drama. It also plays fast and loose with comics canon, often adapting things with a fresh twist to keep them interesting -- but it remains very true to the core idea of the characters. All the characters are excellent, especially Tyler Hoechlin's Superman. Also, if you enjoyed the brief appearances of John Irons/Steel in MAWS, you'll be pleased to know that he is a main character in this show, and he's cool as hell. His daughter Natalie (based on his niece Natasha from the comics) is also badass. S&L was originally created as part of the CW's Arrowverse, but was later changed to be a standalone. You don't need to be familiar with any of the other CW series to appreciate this one.
Tumblr media
Smallville
This is a fairly different take on Superman, primarily exploring him as a teenager growing up in Smallville and developing his powers. Later seasons see him move to Metropolis and show how he developed into becoming Superman. It also features what's widely considered to be the best live-action adaptation of Lex Luthor. That being said, this is a mid-2000s supernatural teen drama that's very much a product of its time -- it's got endearing but inconsistently written characters, irritating love triangles, campy plot lines, the works. It's one of those shows that alternates between being peak television and being the dumbest thing you've ever seen. How much that appeals is definitely up to you.
Tumblr media
Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman
I will be very upfront -- this is a series that will appeal very highly to a particular group of people, and not at all to anyone else. The show is more or less your standard Superman setup, but with a heavy focus on the growing and complicated relationship between Clark, Superman, and Lois. The plots tend to be pure 90s cheese, and some elements have aged pretty poorly, but the characters and their dynamics are excellent. If you're really interested in Clark and Lois' relationship, this is a must watch -- Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher have incredible chemistry. Otherwise, you can probably give this one a pass.
Tumblr media
Supergirl
This series is all about Kara as she becomes Supergirl. It does take a lot of liberties with her character, and her characterization is quite different from both the comics and MAWS. But she's still a great character in her own right, and the supporting cast is also excellent. The show features Kara, her adoptive sister Alex, Jimmy, and more. Superman does make a few appearances, but not very often -- this is very much Kara's show. The show does fall into some typical CW shortcomings -- forced romances, love triangles, overall cheese -- but if you're willing to look past that, you'll find a great series with a lot of heart and charm. This is part of the CW's Arrowverse, which can be overwhelming to try and get into. But apart from the few big crossovers, you can follow most of this show just fine.

Finally gave this one a chance...🫣
For my DC fans.. I'm *very* aware Ezra Miller was/is currently? controversial. BEFORE you come at me, I am a huge Batman nerd and that's really the only reason I watched this movie! 🫣
Pros:
1. Michael Keaton reprising his role as Batman 🦇🙌🏼 . 2. Batman being Batman. 3. George Clooney showing up at the end as Bruce Wayne (solid ending). 4. Gal Gadot 🤩👏🏼 That's it 🤷🏼‍♀️
Cons:
** I hate saying this as a DC fan, but DC just CANNOT do live action movies well at ALL (The Dark Knight trilogy aside)!! I feel like they've never learned from their mistakes?? Have they never analyzed what is wrong and why their movies tank more often than not?? Sorry not sorry 🤷🏼‍♀️ I'll stick to the animated movies/shows which they excel at!! **
1. Ezra Miller's Flash. Can you say cringy?? (Not the whole time honestly, but majority, yes) 😬 seriously my least favorite version. Might be biased because I don't particularly care for Miller as a person... (Grant Gustin will always be my Flash) 2. The cameos of both George and Christopher Reeves and Adam West's Batman, felt weird. They don't appeal to a younger generation. The only reason I know about them is because my owner parents were around during that time and educated me on them. I think this film had plenty of missed opportunities to have current cameos of the same heroes. Especially since the CW's Crisis on Infinite Earths pulled in Miller's Flash. Could have returned the favor?? 3. Nicholas Cage Superman?? Hated that. No no no. Honestly not a huge Superman to begin with, but I respect a good portrayal of him when it happenes. But that was just bad. 4. Supergirl/Kara.. eh. 5. The Jason Momoa cameo in the post credits... Come on 🤦🏼‍♀️ Aquaman could have been so much better. 6. I love The Flash, as much as the next person, but there seems to always be a recurring theme with this character and it lacks uniqueness. Which theme? The one where Barry tries to go back in time to save his mom and inevitably f*cks up the timeline, creating a paradox. It is an overused plot to say the least. There's GOT to be more out there on him besides that?? I wanna see more of him taking on his enemies, his known ones from the Rogues gallery!!

Brain has been having Duela Dent thoughts and just... Like... It's SUCH a shame that when they decided to make a sequel to The Long Halloween that they didn't decide to make it at least partially be about Duela!
Like... Gilda and Harvey did what they did in the Long Halloween in the pursuit of having a family- namely the chance to have children. Well... Then in a sequel, wouldn't it be interesting to explore the aftermath and consequences of them having gotten what they wanted, but in these less than ideal circumstances...? What if Duela was concieved just a short time before Harvey got his face scarred by acid and he went missing (and insane)? I personally would LOVE to see Harvey trying his damndest to be a good father to Duela all while he's become a permenant fixture of Batman's Rogues Gallery. Him always trying to visit and spend time with her, all while being in the revolving door that is Arkham. Him fighting incredibly hard against his compulsions for her sake because he does want to make Duela feel safe and loved. His struggling with the fear of becoming abusive like his own father, but ultimately never actually directly harming her. Because he does love his daughter and wife more than anything in the world and in spite of everything, he somehow manages to be an okay father and husband, even if he is considered to be a bad person. But Duela still growing up to deeply resent him, so much that she denies being related to Two-Face in every capacity and always lies about their relationship.
Like... There's actually such a genuinely interesting story to be told here! But I guess that the DC writers just don't care about Gilda and don't want to use Duela's relationship with Harvey to any interesting effect. :/
