Hi all.

I am a 25 year old student nurse and nature devotee who has an interest in memory benches.

With no valuable IT skills, a limited budget and no overall knowledge of creating and maintaining an active online map, I am seeking advice, tips and potentially assistance from those of you who have insight on how to achieve my goal.

In the UK, memory benches are everywhere - wooden or steel seats of engraved love given by those who were privileged enough to have shared life with those who have passed.

I made this tumblr so that I can start keeping a record of the memory benches I come across in my city, Sheffield, tagged here on this account by location, postcode and the dedicatee’s given name. I will record benches I find outside of Sheffield also, just far less frequently or sporadically.

My goal is to eventually pool the knowledge and resources together to, first, create an online directory of recorded memory benches and then hopefully develop into a map once I gain experienced of how to do so.

Week 12: Crowdsourcing in times of crisis

While social media is convenient, it also causes many problems. However, it can sometimes be a tool that saves lives.

Crowdsourcing is a method of gathering information and ideas from an unspecified number of people through social media and the internet to solve problems.

When the Noto Peninsula earthquake struck Japan on January 1, 2024, social media became a lifesaving tool.

A person in Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Power outage. Can't use the phone. I'm here.” A few minutes later, users who saw the post shared emergency phone numbers and maps of the nearest evacuation centers, and the person was rescued.

This is precisely what we mean by crowdsourcing in times of crisis (utilizing collective intelligence in times of crisis).

SNS and map apps were not originally designed as disaster response tools. However, depending on how they are used, they can serve as infrastructure for citizens to share information in real time during emergencies.

In times of disaster, we digital citizens are not only “consumers of information,” but also “sensors,” “relayers,” and sometimes “supporters.”Taylor (2023)

Japan has evacuation maps for each region, but NHK's national hazard map collects data provided by the government and local authorities, visualizes the risk of flooding for each location, and shares it as a basis for residents' decisions in times of sudden disaster.

However, not all information on social media is necessarily accurate. In the past, there have been cases where false information about bridges affected by landslides was spread. It is our responsibility to carefully evaluate the reliability of such information.

What we can do

・When sharing information, make sure it is accurate before posting.

・Posting with hashtags and location information will make it more likely to be seen by many people.

What not to do

・Avoid posting personal information as much as possible.

・Avoid posting sensational videos.

・Do not share ambiguous information.

IM BACK! ✨🙇🏻‍♀️ I know lately I’ve been absent from my socials. And I’m preparing a content to talk a bit about this with open heart! I needed some time and that’s it. It was refreshing and so good for my mental health.  Briefly speaking, I was again entering on a exhaustion on making art everyday. And constantly doing it was turning really harmful for me. "Einer meiner liebsten Einträge auf der Lacune Karte ist der mit den Raum-Scribbles vom Camelot, einer Disco für Lesben auf St. Pauli. Auf dem Adding Café im Februar 2024 wurden aus einem gemeinsamen Gespräch und Erinnerungen schnelle Skizzen mit Kugelschreiber auf weißem Papier gezeichnet. Wo genau standen die Boxen? War das DJ Pult links oder doch rechts gegenüber vom Eingang? Erinnerungen ergänzen sich, sind auch manchmal im Widerstreit.
