Benzodiazepines, used to treat anxiety, can cause harmful side effects when taken long-term. The documentary "Medicating Normal"
Etienne de la Boetie2
Aug 26, 2024
by Dr. Joseph Mercola
STORY AT-A-GLANCE
Benzodiazepines, used to treat anxiety, can cause harmful side effects when taken long-term. The documentary "Medicating Normal" explores how psychotropic medications can worsen patients' conditions over time
Long-term use of benzodiazepines can lead to impaired thinking, confusion, disorientation and negative effects on fluid intelligence. Even teenagers are increasingly prescribed psychotropic medications for mental health issues
The pharmaceutical industry has redefined "normal" to equate discomfort with abnormality, leading to overprescription. This approach prioritizes profit over addressing root causes of mental health issues
Polypharmacy, the use of multiple medications simultaneously, is a growing problem in America. It affects various groups, particularly the elderly, and can lead to numerous health complications
To reduce medication dependency, list all medications, use one pharmacy, scrutinize new prescriptions and consider healthy lifestyle changes. Regular medication reviews with health care providers are also crucial
Benzodiazepines are a class of psychotropic medications used to treat anxiety disorders. They work by promoting the release of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter, thus slowing down the nervous system.1 However, they’re prone to abuse, and when taken for years, can cause harmful side effects — many of which have not yet been fully identified and studied.
The documentary film “Medicating Normal,” produced and directed by filmmaking duo Lynn Cunningham and Wendy Ractliffe, sheds light on this problem. The film was inspired by a relative of Cunningham, who, at one point, was taking 10 pills daily, and she wanted to raise awareness about it. Here’s their statement, from the film’s official website:2

are you familiar with XingXing the one armed temple macaque?
I am, and to be honest I have very mixed feelings about her situation.
I have been vocal about how it is wrong and unethical to keep primates as pets, how feeding wildlife is harmful, and how human/primate interactions are dangerous for both parties. XingXing is an interesting case, as she does not fit perfectly into the categories I have talked about.
XingXing is not a pet, and is able to free roam. I have been told that XingXing decides how to spend her time and will often go into the forest for days at a time. She is fed by people, but only a few who are trusted to do so, who she has ongoing relationships with. Additionally, she has a trauma history that means that she would struggle in the wild if left entirely alone.
In complex cases like this it is easy to say that she should live at a sanctuary. Of course animals living in the wild is ideal, but most people agree that if that is not possible that a sanctuary or zoo should care for them. The reality is more challenging, as sanctuaries are in high demand and need a lot of support. They are typically underfunded and rely on the labour of volunteers, and while they would love to care for every animal in need it is simply not possible. Additionally, major changes can be detrimental for animals especially if they have trauma histories. As such I feel that if XingXing is able to live well where she is, her comfort should be prioritized.
That being said, I feel that there should be some improvements made to her lifestyle and the way it is documented. While being fed may be necessary if she is unable to forage for herself, she appears to be quite overweight. While humans can be a pretty wide range of sizes and still healthy, other species have much narrower ranges of healthy sizes and XingXing's size may be detrimental to her health and activity level. The woman who cares for her is elderly and may not be able to encourage her to be more active, but despite XingXing's diet appearing to be not bad health wise (mostly fruit from what I have seen) I think cutting down on the sweets and adding more leafy greens could be good for her both in helping her lose weight and encouraging her to forage for her own food as much as possible.
The only major issue I have with XingXing is her social media presence. She is very cute and charismatic, but seeing her being fed and pet by people can be detrimental to her species and other monkeys in the long term. People who see monkeys being treated like pets even if they are not pets are likely to get the idea that monkeys are safe, friendly, and even adoptable. A caretaker for a macaque that requires supplemental snacks giving her a banana and a tourist giving a wild macaque a banana to bribe it to pose for a picture can look virtually identical on social media. Increasingly, social media accounts for accredited sanctuaries are adding disclaimers or even not posting photos or videos that show staff touching the animals altogether to avoid making it look like the animals could be pets.
XingXing is lovely and I hope that she is well taken care of and active, but I also worry that people who see photos and videos of her will get the wrong idea on appropriate human/primate interactions.

short mun introduction here. hi, hi! i'm autumn (she/they, 21+) and i bring you not only my baby aera here, but also moon taeho (@mooninkd) & ahn kiha (@srnscng) so feel free to contact me on any of them! i also have discord upon request ♡
short muse introduction here. kim aera. 25 y/o. a nurse practitioner at cheongdanhae clinic and a resident! she was born and raised in yuseong bay all her life and honestly she has never known anything else nor she does really want to (for now anyway) even though she might claim otherwise. here is her profile and here is her pinterest!
answer the following prompts, either ooc or ic!
when did your muse first arrive in yuseong bay?      as said before, aera was born and raised in yuseong bay! she once dreamed of doing med school in some big city (seoul) just like her big sister that also went there for her university degree and have her little young adult adventures, however in the end she gave up the idea because of certain circumstances in her life. not that she's sad about not leaving yuseong bay anymore!! actually she wholeheartedly sees it as her home; she likes her job and she likes the house that she lives in, she likes (esp!!) the stray cats on the bay and she genuinely doesn't see herself living somewhere else (at least for now).
what does an average day look like for your muse?      she wakes up around 7am, has a cup of homemade matcha latte (recipe from her mother! she wanted to consume caffeine in a "healthy" manner so aera grew up with more matcha than coffee in her life) while attending to the small garden that she has (that was also her mother's!), talks to the plants a little bit so they can grow well and then goes back inside to have a proper breakfast, talks a little with the picture that she has of her parents in their little altar. then she gets ready goes to work after a cheerful i'm going now but i'll be back in the evening! goodbye to them so she's at clinic at 9am. as promised is only back around dinner time; usually she's too tired to cook so she buys dinner on the way or shamelessly stops by the place of one of the elderly couples/people that saw her grow up and knows that they'd never refuse to feed her (as a matter of fact they're more than glad to do so!), besides the company always does her good. then she goes home to watch some drama while doing some crocheting, especially if she didn't have any other opportunity to do so during her day (like having a slow day at work or anything like that); goes to bed around 10pm the earliest, 11pm to 12am the latest.
where can your muse usually be found?      besides work (rip aera and her 10 hours shifts), she can also be seen around the pier around mid afternoon, even more so during the colder seasons, trying to put sweaters (that she made herself) on the cats of the community they have in yuseong bay; goes to daeyanghwa florals every two weeks or so (or when she wants to treat herself a little) to get gardening supplies or new seeds/flowers for her garden and goes to lemon martes almost weekly for groceries because she always forgets one thing or two even with always having her groceries list with her— also enjoys the farmer's market to see the stalls and encountering a familiar face or two. once in a blue moon, she can also be seen in the recreation center trying to start some working out routine that she drops after a day or two.
how does your muse feel about hanhwa resort?      it's a little complicated because as much as she loves the fact that it's bringing attention to yuseong bay and allowing new people to go in and out of the town in a frequency that was never seen before, aera can't help but also feel a little resistant to how it's changing the town that she has known since she was young, after all, she was never good at dealing with change to begin with and if she really stops to think about it, she gets anxious about her own lifestyle being affected eventually (esp because of the higher prices that are only getting even higher); on top of it, she doesn't like the overall way that the resort treats the rest of the city, either like they're an annoyance to their business or as if they were part of the entertainment that they were providing.
is there an aspiration for your muse to stay in or leave yuseong bay?      as said before, aera isn't very good with changes and she has lots of attachments with the town so she has more reasons to stay than to leave. even if she does say that she dreams of a life out of it (and romanticizes the hell out of it), deep inside she feels like the calm and quiet life of a small town like yuseong bay suits her the most and she doesn't genuinely sees herself anywhere else for now. but then it's hard to say how much those desires is from the way she decided to deal mainly with her grief and how much is from a personal desire/want or even if it really matters in the end.
answer the following, ooc!
list your muse’s three favorite songs.      in no particular order: red velvet - about love ; twice - cruel ; taeyeon - time lapse.
describe your muse’s wardrobe.      cute scrubs, mostly very light/pastel colors, a combination of feminine and comfortable. loves loves to wear oversized sweaters/cardigans (and alikes), even more so when she learned how to make them herself and that's why it's not unusual to see her with rolled up sleeves of whatever she's wearing so her hands are usable, also adores short overalls and high waist bottoms (skirts, shorts, jeans, etc etc), sneakers over anything else but does own a couple of heels for any "fancier" events even if they're very rare.
what is a color, word, and emoji that you feel describes your muse?      lilac, daydream, 🐣
three strong likes and dislikes for your muse.      really likes crochet, rom coms, matcha bubble tea / really dislikes interrupted naps, almonds, iced americano (and/or most iced coffees)
three positive and negative traits for your muse.      positive traits softspoken, dutiful, caring / negative traits fanciful, unambitious, naive
three talents and shortcomings for your muse.      talents has a good memory, high tolerance for spicy food, queen of small talking/starting conversations / shortcomings doesn't know how to say no even when she wants to, can't whistle, trusts people that she shouldn't
what is a book/tv series/movie/video game character that you feel your character relates to?      she gives off the same energy as honda tohru from fruits basket.
a relevant goal or arch for your character to overcome.      TW DEATH & GRIEF it's been six years since her parents passed away and even though she swears that she's over it, aera obviously isn't. she's still incapable of letting them go. of course that she isn't as depressed as she was during the highest point of her grieving process, but she's also sort of lowkey in denial while clinging to small things that she feels are the only things that she has of her parents (i.e. her house which ends up stretching to yuseong bay as a whole, the necklace she is always wearing that is from her mom's, even her love for match only developed after her mother died, etc etc) so i wished that she'd genuinely move on and cling to her parents' memory in a healthier way/in a way that doesn't stop her from doing things that could want but (maybe) convinces herself that she doesn't (like leaving yuseong bay even if for vacation). END OF TW.      also she's almost ridiculously afraid of ending up alone/feeling lonely so hopefully she'll overcome that and make healthier friendships/be taken less advantage by people just to make them stay 🙏
extra bits !
started crocheting as a way to deal especially with stress related to getting her nurse license and now it's become a habit/hobby, it isn't really unusual to see her crocheting somewhere, even during work if it's a slow day; part of her love language became offering/making sweaters or scarves or keychain sized amigurumis for the people that she cares about (including the community of cats in yuseong bay).
once in a blue moon she gathers enough stuff to sell that at the farmer's market in a very small stall, but it's extremely rare since she has a full time job and usually gives away anything that she makes that isn't for herself anyway.
has a driver's license because her sister insisted that she at least learned how to drive just in case, is pretty ok at it but has no real interest in getting a car for herself.
has a good relationship with her sister even if it'd be easy to assume that they're strained (i.e. big sister doesn't visit often unless it's some special event like chuseok or anything relating to their parents', aera doesn't visit her at all because that would mean leaving yuseong bay, their different personalities, etc etc). they still care for each other and even though big sister can be a little pushy in trying to get aera to move on from the things that she feels like aera needs to, she means well and tries to tone it down when/if aera calls her out in it.
is always wearing a delicate necklace with a pendant of a single (real) pearl that used to be her mother's. the story behind it is that it was aera's father engagement present to her mother, it was even said that he fished that pearl himself and then asked to make a necklace out of it; it's unsure how true this story is but aera believes it wholeheartedly.
had a very serious relationship (wc coming soon!!) that ended up badly and now she's also scared of falling seriously in love again, instead she is more fond of the idea of love and her feelings are completely about the image/idea of the target of her affection that she has in her head instead of the real person, thinking that this way she'll protect herself from genuine feelings + still enjoying her romanticized (and somewhat shallow tbh) idea of love. big consequence of it is that she has at least one new crush every day and then ghosts anyone who shows genuine interest to her.
would love to adopt a cat (or any pet tbh) but feels like her lifestyle is too busy to be able to properly take care of any other living being that isn't the plants in her mother's garden so instead she tries to look after the kittens and any other strays that she meets on the street but then again never fully commits to it.

If we discount the number of babies and underaged deaths/accidents, it should be 80-85 imo. I'm pretty sure your 50s are called middle-age because reaching the age of 100 is pretty possible nowadays (and in the future).
But if we take the natural life expectancy, most people can make it to 80+ if their lifestyles are healthy enough. Few live past 90 (including my great-grandpa, who is a bit frail but still healthy and sound at 91~92), though only exceptional people make it to 100-110+... So I guess late 30s to 50 is a pretty good range for middle-aged, while 60 is aging and somewhat old. 70 is already elderly though, and 80+ is straight-up geriatric. 😂
I totally agree with this. However, I think the point is less what the actual average lifespan for most people is, or what exact number counts as middle aged, and more so that we're being forced to work for low wages and decreasing rewards for the majority of our young, healthy lives.
And that short period of freedom when you do finally retire is meant to motivate you to spend most of your waking hours for the majority of your life making other people money. Not that many of us will even be able to retire at all given that people cannot make meaningful savings when their paychecks only barely cover their cost of living, social security is disappearing as we speak, and republicans are trying to raise the requirement age to your 70s.
I want to have time to enjoy my life when I'm still young enough to be healthy and full of energy. I don't want to have to put my dreams on hold or always push my true interests and priorities to the side for the majority of my life. I don't want to wait to live until I'm so old that I can't continue working because my body is breaking down and I'm approaching death. I should get to enjoy my life, my health, and my time NOW.
Because, really, no amount of time is guaranteed to us. Regardless of the average lifespan, there's no certainty that you will reach that number or anywhere near it. I could be hit by a bus tomorrow, or I could die of cancer at 35, or I could live to 103, who knows! But the point is that I want to live freely right here and right now; I do not want to spend my life toiling for too little pay to just barely survive on while a tiny percentage of the population gets even more obscenely wealthy. If we truly understood how tenuous our time really is, we wouldn't be okay with waiting until we maybe hit our 60s or 70s to enjoy our lives.

Understanding Elderly Depression: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
Tumblr media
As our population ages, understanding the mental health challenges faced by the elderly becomes increasingly important. Depression is a significant concern among older adults, affecting their overall well-being and quality of life. In this article, we will explore the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for elderly depression, providing valuable insights for caregivers, family members, and healthcare professionals.
What is Elderly Depression?
Elderly depression is a mental health disorder characterized by persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, and a range of physical and emotional symptoms. It is not a normal part of aging but a medical condition that requires attention and treatment.
Causes of Depression in the Elderly
Physical Health Issues: Chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis can contribute to depression. The physical pain and limitations these conditions impose can lead to feelings of hopelessness and despair.
Loss and Bereavement: The death of a spouse, friends, or family members can trigger profound grief and loneliness, increasing the risk of depression.
Social Isolation: Reduced social interactions due to retirement, mobility issues, or the loss of loved ones can lead to feelings of isolation and depression.
Medication Side Effects: Some medications commonly prescribed to older adults can have side effects that contribute to depressive symptoms.
Genetics: A family history of depression can increase the likelihood of developing the condition.
Life Transitions: Major life changes, such as moving to a nursing home or adjusting to a new living situation, can be stressful and contribute to depression.
Symptoms of Elderly Depression
Recognizing depression in the elderly can be challenging as symptoms may differ from those in younger individuals. Common symptoms include:
Persistent sadness or anxiety
Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
Fatigue and lack of energy
Changes in appetite and weight
Difficulty sleeping or oversleeping
Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
Difficulty concentrating and making decisions
Physical symptoms such as aches and pains without a clear cause
Thoughts of death or suicide
Treatment Options for Elderly Depression
Psychotherapy: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal therapy (IPT) are effective in treating depression by addressing negative thought patterns and improving coping strategies.
Medication: Antidepressants can be prescribed to help balance brain chemicals. It’s crucial to work closely with a healthcare provider to find the right medication and dosage, considering potential side effects and interactions with other medications.
Lifestyle Changes: Encouraging physical activity, a healthy diet, and regular sleep can improve mood and overall health.
Social Support: Maintaining strong social connections through family, friends, and community activities can help alleviate feelings of isolation and depression.
Support Groups: Joining a support group for older adults can provide a sense of belonging and understanding.
Medical Care: Managing chronic health conditions and ensuring proper medication management can reduce the physical factors contributing to depression.
Preventing Depression in the Elderly
Stay Connected: Encourage regular social interactions and participation in community activities.
Promote Physical Health: Encourage regular exercise and a balanced diet.
Provide Emotional Support: Be attentive and supportive, recognizing the emotional needs of older adults.
Monitor Medications: Be aware of potential side effects and interactions of prescribed medications.
Seek Professional Help: If signs of depression are present, seek the advice of healthcare professionals promptly.
Remember, if you need further guidance or support, don’t hesitate to reach out to your mental health professional or contact us for assistance.

5 habits I've picked up during my Lisbon years
These are the biggest life changing habits I've picked up during my seven Lisbon years.
They come in no specific order.
Vegetarian diet
Tumblr media
Not my pic.
Not that Portuguese cuisine is known for its vegetarian dishes (because it has none!) but my view on food and cooking have changed while spending my 30's in Lisbon (or it's the old age hehe). Good flavors are rather a simple thing and a lot can be done with fresh and good ingredients without complex procedures.
When still living in Finland I didn't enjoy cooking that much or know exactly how to use the best out of the ingredients I had in my reach. Finnish grocery stores are filled with overproduced and ready-to-go meal options which I also indulged greatly. Finnish cuisine is also rather meat focused which I have stepped away from a bit during my years abroad even though I still enjoy a good steak every now and then.
Portuguese supermercardos on the other hand differ quite a lot - many things can be found fresh and locally produced (except cod because that they actually get from Norway). Instead of e-code filled spice mixes you don't need much else to highlight the natural flavors except salt, pepper, lemon and olive oil. This has changed my way of seeing and consume food tremendously.
Nowadays my social media feed is filled with Mediterranean style vegetarian recipes and I've taken on such things as herbs, onions, garlic, olive oil, arugula and fresh vegetables to my daily diet. I take advantage of seasonal products such as pomegranate, watermelon, mint to bring variety to my plate.
Fun fact is that I've also learned to eat oats, berries + cottage cheese in here which all have been part of Finnish classical diet forever but which I used to hate when living back home.
I'm more human
Tumblr media
Not my pic.
Things don't always work and not especially here in Portugal. Systems crash, procedures fail and so do people. You cannot be in a hurry while living in this city or schedule no more than one bureaucrat procedure on your weekly agenda. And that one thing takes the entire day often! Portuguese people and culture still embrace old fashion lifestyle in many ways. Many things still run with pen and paper here and developments come in practice slowly. It's human that mistakes take place and that things might not be easy on the first try.
On a different side of the coin however, elderly, pregnant women or people with small kids or injuries often get priority in groceries and other places. Or you might be passed by the queue because you only have one item in your shopping basket when the person in front of you is buying for a family of six. There's humanity in everyday counters. I'm not saying that not being able to trust the process is entirely stress free but I do enjoy the more human side of things. Life is more merciful, my flaws don't make me and I demand less from myself and those around me.
Traditional = more simple life?
Tumblr media
Not my pic.
I'm not saying that everything is about money or that you wouldn't need it but when you don't have much of it you tend to prioritize the real things in life.
The essential part of Portuguese everyday life routine is the meals, family and relationships in general. Yes, we all have to go to work but it doesn't become us. During free time people read books, exercise, go to the beach or play football - some of these being perhaps the essential parts of a Portuguese (or even of South European) lifestyle. These off-screen activities embrace social relationships, healthy and in my opinion more equal lifestyle where one's background with money or success doesn't matter.
This a far cry how I remember the years lived in Finland. The society is very performance and success focused - whether it's from the financial wealth to meeting the social standards - life is measured with achievements, success. The standards are the same for everyone, every child, woman and man and pressures start to grow from a very young age on. Individuality feels criminal. It's about reaching the finish line with great scores instead of enjoying the journey and its benefits to you.
Portuguese salary is is still lower than an average EU-citizen's elsewhere in Europe. As mentioned this country is slow to develop, therefore people and the lifestyle have remained traditional in many ways. Despite of the recent years' tourism boom that has brought along more pressure to provide things in a more modern manner. However it's not super uncommon to step into a store that only accepts cash, or to a Portuguese kitchen that has changed only a little during the last century. Life can be so simple.
Outdoor sports
Tumblr media
Not my pic.
Funnily enough coming from the country of four seasons, thousands of lakes and forests that offer almost the same amount of possibilities to exercise all year round, I didn't learn to embrace outdoor sports before January 2020 - in Lisbon. I started running just before the covid shit storm, just in time when gyms and everything else shut down. There was nothing else than the empty streets and parks to conquer.
Funnily enough this new found lifestyle would suffer significantly if I ever moved to Finland (or any other Northern country with proper winters) because indoor, treadmill running doesn't do it for me. I'm in eternal love with the Portuguese weather because I can get around the rains or heat waves - the weather is not an obstacle for me!
Less productive
Tumblr media
Not my pic.
I said these five things come in no particular order but it feels natural though to put this last. This is the result of all these four.
I don't feel pressured to do anything that I don't want to do. Whether it's to change jobs, to have a relationship, to travel, to exercise or eat healthy. I do all these things because I want to and if not, it's because I'm not feeling like it. I may be less productive and not where "I supposed to be at my age" - I can feel the judgement every time going home.. but the choices I've made during these seven years have felt truly mine and only mine.
Sometimes I do wonder if these changes and steps would have occurred if I had lived in Finland or somewhere else. Some maybe, others not.

A postmenopausal woman in her 50s came in with tooth decay and breakage.
On examining, most of her teeth were broken and among the ones that were intact, many of them had cavities.
And this reminds me how important tooth care is, which I am sure a lot of people neglect in their early 20s and 30s.
Now here's the important part :
A lot of people unknowingly suffer from Vitamin D deficiency due to lifestyle and eating habits. Generally we see this in postmenopausal women and the elderly but nowadays it's also prevalent among children and adults.
Vitamin D deficiency can often have no symptoms until it becomes severe. Sometimes, it can present as fatigue and muscle weakness or bone/joint pains.
And when levels are unregulated and the deficiency is untreated for long it can lead to tooth decay. Vitamin D deficiency can also cause depression. And when we are depressed we tend to neglect our health.
Yes age does play a role. You are definitely going to have tooth problems in your late 70s & 80s.
But I can guarantee that no one wants that in their late 40s and mid 50s.
So here's what you can do :
Make sure you are taking a healthy, nutritious diet on a regular basis and your life is more or less organised.
If you feel easily tired/sleepy or muscle weakness or bone pains, definitely see a doctor and get a 25-hydroxy Vitamin D test. Monitoring Vitamin D levels yearly can help because sometimes it does not present with symptoms until it reaches a severe stage.
Maintain oral hygiene: brush teeth twice a day(a lot out there don't) ; rinse mouth with Chlorhexidine Mouthwash for 5mins after dinner ; floss regularly.
Do not delay visits to a dentist. Do get checked for cavities. Get hold of an honest dentist who will cater to your needs.
Take care of yourself(body+mind). Also, if you have diabetes, get it checked and under control.

8 Easy Exercise Tips for Midlife
A recent study confirms what you may have suspected. Adults tend to become much less active as they reach their midlife years.
Researchers at the University of Texas have completed the first large scale study of activity levels among subjects 38 to 50 years old.
As they followed them for ten years, they expected that intense activity would decrease, but they were surprised to find a decline in ordinary daily activities like walking as well.
It’s a serious issue because, as we age, we lose bone and muscle mass and gain weight more easily. Our heart also becomes smaller and less flexible.

On the other hand, research shows that even elderly adults can start to turn back the clock with regular and appropriate exercise.
If you want to beat the odds, it’s important to start making choices at midlife that will lower your risk for serious conditions like obesity, cancer, diabetes, and dementia.
