Everything we know about 'DC vs. Vampires: World War V'
Tumblr media
As the night cloaks the sky, a new chapter in the DC Universe unfolds, darker and more thrilling than ever before. ‘DC vs. Vampires: World War V’ emerges from the shadows, bringing with it a tale of heroism, sacrifice, and survival in a world overrun by the undead. The Dawn of Despair: In the icy grip of winter, the fragile truce that once held between humanity and the nocturnal predators is shattered. The vampire queen, Barbara Gordon, commands an army that thirsts for more than just victory—they crave the very essence of life that courses through the veins of the living. In DC vs. Vampires: World War V, it's the dead of winter, and any hope for a fragile truce between the Green Arrow-led human heroes and vampire queen Barbara Gordon's army has been dashed by Damian Wayne and his guerrilla fighters. Damian is the only one fighting back against the bloodthirsty hordes, leaving Green Arrow with a choice: Does he stand and fight or sacrifice the boy in the name of peace? According to DC, not only will this new Elseworlds series build upon the compelling storylines from the previous DC vs. Vampires series, but readers can also expect to see reimagined versions of current DC Super Heroes in this dark and terrifying world. A Beacon of Resistance: Amidst the chaos, a lone figure stands against the tide of darkness—Damian Wayne. His guerrilla warfare tactics are the last line of defense in a world teetering on the brink of eternal night. With each passing moment, the question looms larger: Will Green Arrow stand beside the young warrior, or will he sacrifice Damian for a chance at peace? A New Vision of Heroes: This 12-issue series, crafted by the acclaimed duo of writer Matthew Rosenberg and artist Otto Schmidt, promises to expand the lore that captivated fans in the original ‘DC vs. Vampires’ and its sequel, ‘DC vs. Vampires: All-Out War’. Expect to see reimagined versions of beloved DC Super Heroes, now fighting for survival in this grim alternate reality1. Art That Haunts: The debut issue features a main cover by Otto Schmidt, with variant covers by Steve Beach, Jae Lee, Riley Rossmo, and Nikola Čižmešija, plus a foil variant cover by Homare. Each piece is a window into a world where the lines between hero and monster blur1. Join the Fight: ‘DC vs. Vampires: World War V’ is not just a comic book series—it’s a battle cry for all who dare to dream of light in the darkest of times. Preorder begins on May 17, with the series set to hit shelves on August 14. For those who cannot wait, a digital version will be available on the DC UNIVERSE INFINITE platform1. As the war between light and dark wages on, one thing is certain: the world of DC will never be the same. Will you join the fight? It’s the dead of winter, and any hope for a fragile truce between the Green Arrow-led human heroes and vampire queen Barbara Gordon’s army has been dashed by Damian Wayne and his guerrilla fighters. Damian is the only one fighting back against the bloodthirsty hordes, leaving Green Arrow with a choice: Does he stand and fight or sacrifice the boy in the name of peace?

This feels like a hot take nowadays, but Jara (Jason Todd/Yara Flor) was the best possible relationship that could’ve come out of the Elseworld’s Teen Titans. Do I think the series as a whole would’ve been better without a romance plot? Yes, of course, but man do I love Jara.
First of all, both of them are dealing with the pressure of carrying on the legacy of two of the original Teen Titans. I see Cara fans saying “oh, but Batgirl is a legacy name, too,” but it’s really not the same. Cass had Barbara in her corner while Jason and Yara didn’t have Dick or Donna in theirs (at least at the start/not in the same way that Cass had Babs.)
Also, despite the fact that the romance plot from #27 to #36 was forced I admit, they had chemistry before that. Almost from the start, before they were really friends or got along that well, they had banter! There was tension! There was already foreshadowing for the relationship that would blossom between the two of them by #5.
The specific moment of foreshadowing that comes to mind in issue 5 is Roy’s thought boxes on page 26, where Roy compared the two to him and Donna. Most people say this makes no sense, that it would be better to make a comparison between Dick and Donna, I say this was purposeful to hint at how their relationship would develop.
And at the end, Yara was the one who was there for Jason after he killed Condiment King, helping him as he tried to figure out what it meant to have blood on his hands. All the others, especially Roy, turned their back on him without even asking why he did it (which I suppose we should blame the writers for more than the characters, and how rushed the entire ending is).
In conclusion, whether you like the ship or not, the writers were pushing it from the start. If you’re an Elseword’s Teen Titans fan, you can’t ignore it. Stop getting pissy when people enjoy the CANON ship, and stop trying to make a perfectly normal friendship a romantic relationship… but also qpr cara would slap.

The devastating finals of the arrowverse elsewords crossover season, I-
First Oliver has to leave his daughter and Felicity and finds out he’s going to die, Felicity breaks down as oliver leaves (AFTER 20 YEARS SHE FINALLY GETS TO SEE HIM AGAIN)
Then Nora gets erased from the timeline, barry and Iris break down as this happen and later Iris breaks down after she finds the journal and as if that wasn’t bad enough, Barry’s disappearance date changes to 2019 during crisis
Then Lena has to find out from Lex that her best friend is supergirl and breaking down after “killing” her own brother
And then Nate dies and Zari sacrifices herself to save him, erasing herself from the timeline and no one remembers her because her brother is in her place. Oh my god. My steelhacker heart. AND THE WAY HE WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO FELT LIKE SOMETHING WAS MISSING??? Like, hello. I’ve officially converted to steelhacker.

So this post and this one got me thinking more about what a darker, grittier, more twisted and deconstructive (but still very whimsical, wholesome and heart-filled) take on Winnie The Pooh would look like, and since Pooh’s now in the public domain, such a thing isn’t in the realm of the impossible anymore, and would certainly be a more worthwhile contribution to Pooh canon and society as a whole than...that thing. What I lean towards is a three season TV series in a similar vein to Amphibia where low stakes small stories and comedy meets with a larger, steadily building overarching narrative that leads to bigger revelations and higher stakes conflict. Said conflict has to arise from somewhere, so I thought up four OCs to bring it with them!
Context: This hypothetical series would be an Elsewords take on Winnie The Pooh from the main Disney depictions that reframes the Hundred Acre Wood as a vast, magical Eden of regrown nature and wildlife located in Sussex, England on a post-apocalyptic Earth. Christopher Robin is a orphaned boy who lives in a nature-overgrown neigborhood in Sussex and has secret access to the Wood, where he’s befriended some friendly cryptids with very plush animal-like appearances. All the classic Pooh tales transpired until one day Christopher had to leave at behest of his caretakers. In this story’s present day, Christopher is a young adult who returns to the Hundred Acre Wood and learns some deep, dark secrets about it that he’d never known in the childhood he left behind, such as the connection between the Wood denizens and the higher spirits of nature, the crystal stones that keep effect the way time flows within the Wood, why creatures such as Heffalumps, Woozles, and Jagulars are as they are, and the unnatural evil that lurks beneath the Wood’s soil...
Credit to @disneyfan50, who put forward what could very well work as an ongoing flashback storyline in the first season, prior to the emergence of the first OC seen on this post in the present day tale.
And now, here they are - my OC Bad Guys!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
John Jagular emerges as the chief antagonist of the story, the ruler of the hidden Jagulars’ Vale who, in response to the natural resource scarity in his dominion, seeks to turn the Hundred Acre Wood into his first ever colony and tax the shit out of them so that a portion of their goods (hunny, hacorns, sticks, herbs and plant-life, Rabbit’s vegetables, etc.) can go to Jagular’s Vale. Much as he wants to be taken seriously as a soverign monarch, King John is quite a hapless and oafish figure who normally fails. His basis is the character of King John, who appeared in a handful of poems by A.A Milne, and he is a partial Expy of Prince John from Disney’s Robin Hood. He’d be voiced by Alan Tudyk (w/ his Clayface and King River voice)
Tumblr media
Kaleb Jingswell is the unexpected human antagonist, a competitor of Christopher Robin’s who’s put his foot down in land development and real estate business, meaning yes, he does exactly what you’d think he’d do: tries to secure a deal for the Hundred Acre Woods to get bulldozed and made into the future site of homes for humans. While many are in need of homes in this post-apocalyptic setting, his intent is not to help the needy but simply to spite Christopher by desecrating his childhood playground. Much like John Jagular, Kaleb is heavy on comedic relief despite his cruelty and wickedness. He is a suspiciously similar character to Giles WInslow Jr. from Christopher Robin (2018), but he also has influences in Big City Greens’ Chip Whistler and El Hazard’s Katsuhiko Jinnai (same initials even!) He’d be voiced by Kyle McCarley (Simon Laurent from Infinity Train, etc.).
Tumblr media
Sylvester T. Reynard is the true villain of the piece, a suspicious fox who roams around the woods in clownish get-up, always claiming to be conveniently exactly what someone might need him to be at that given moment. Feigning friendliness to Pooh and friends, Reynard is constantly scheming up ways to dupe them, will never hesitate to stab them in the back when it suits him, and eventually starts playing them, the Jagulars, the Heffalumps and Woozles, and even Kaleb Jingwell’s human demolition team against one another. While as comical a figure as John and Kaleb, Reynard differs in that he does more long term thinking than either of them and has moments where his darker, more intimidating true nature shows itself. His animation would also notably differ from that of other characters, with his movements being stange and jerky and his feet sometimes lifting above the ground, signifying something very off about this particular critter. His basis is the obscure one-off antagonist Sly Fox from the book Pooh’s New Clothes, who duped the Hundred Acre Wood residents and got away with it with a handful of hunny jars, and the clown-like garb and make-up along is an allusion to none other than Pennywise the Dancing Clown from Stephen King’s IT. He’d be voiced by David Tennant (w/ his Dread the Evil Genie voice)
Tumblr media
The Thing From Below is the overarching villain, though we’d not learn he exists until near the very end when it’s revealed he’d been sealed beneath the Hundred Acre Wood for ages. A beast who knows no morality, the Thing wishes to swallow up all the mystical supernatural power within the crystal stones in order to strengthen itself so that it may dominate the Wood and leave a wasteland of dust, decay, and bones in its place. It is said that more of its kind used to exist and are what brought the planet to an apocalypse a good many years ago, the effects of which are still being dealt with, and the older forest spirits imprisoned this last one because it was the strongest and cruelest of them all. Not pictured is that on the tip of its tail a tall, thin branch sprouts out, and on the edge of the branch is a long, crooked wire-like thing, and on the edge of that is Sylvester T. Reynard, who the whole time was the Thing’s puppet working to get it released from beneath the earth (yeah, turns out my “Professor Pericles” idea from 5 years earlier ended up a little more on the mark than I’d expected). As you’ll most likely notice, the Thing is indeed the Skullasaurus, the fabled fearsome monster from Pooh’s Grand Adventure, though it would not be addressed as such. And as an additional Mythology Gag, it’d be voiced by Jim Cummings using only growls, grunts and roars, as all of his “speaking” is done by Reynard.
By the by, I'm also still waiting for that Madeline Robin-centered spinoff, but that should be its own thing entirely, obviously. The poor girl doesn’t deserve to be put through anything like these nightmares!

tried to find your opinion on this by searching young justice show but couldn't find anything so anyways what's your opinion on the show if you've seen it?
I personally love it as an elseword story (idk if I'm using that right) and think it was very creative and well done. I don't really like how Linda was left out but oh well you win some you lose some. (Also hate Cass backstory change so much ughhhhh)
I don't think I've talked about it before! Honestly, I don't think about the show much. I watched uhh three and a half seasons maybe? And then just kind of slipped off it. (I literally don't remember if I watched the episodes with Cass or just heard about them, so I won't comment there.)
I think it's valuable to judge these things both as adaptations and as independent pieces of fiction, so:
as an adaptation
YJTV is not a faithful adaption of the comics universe, but it never purported to be. Dubbing it an Elseworld seems spot on to me. It takes a lot of elements and characters from the original, but thoroughly remixed in a show that is a new story at its core--centering on a team that never existed in comics. And that's fine!
I would have preferred they called the show something else. It's really not a young justice adaptation, and that’s just confused branding. But that's a minor point.
It does bug me the way they utterly changed some characters. Like, why chose to "adapt" comics villain Artemis Crock just to make her a hero with supervillain parents instead of, you know, adapting any of the existing teen heroes who already fit that story? Why "adapt" Cheshire just to make her central story about a family she's never even been related to in comics? Why "adapt" Superboy to make him grumpy angry boy with angst over being unable to fly?
Just. I will never ever understand adaptations using characters in name only. Who is that for?? It means nothing to people who don't know the character already, and it's a disappointment to people who do. You can just make an OC! You're allowed to do that in your new show!
That said, the only thing about YJ as an adaptation that I truly, utterly resent it for is the dynamic with Conner and Clark that has since polluted every fan space, I hate it, the end.
Otherwise, as an adaptation, it's fine! I got some issues with it, but I think it's perfectly legitimate to make an elseworlds type thing with its own narrative identity rather than a strict adaptation.
as a show
i think it sucks. Sorry.
I should say, the first season was solid. With a limited focus on a team of six-ish, it did really well. Good character and team building, good plot work, just generally enjoyable. I liked it a lot!
And then it went off the rails. I am hardly the first person to say it but: this show has too many characters. And imo that problem is so pronounced that it’s not a flaw in an otherwise good show, but completely destroys the whole thing. It has way too many characters. It’s not even in the realm of the right number of characters. And, iirc, it's worse and worse every season.
The other huge flaw in the show became really obvious to me in season...3 I think? And that is absolutely baffling decisions on what to tell and what to show.
This is tied into the too many characters thing--there simply isn’t enough time to show even half of what needs to be shown. But I also remember regularly wondering why on earth one event was deemed irrelevant enough to be a brief slideshow-with-narration sequence, or even glossed over in one line of dialogue, while something seemingly way less important would be played out on screen.
Huge character and relationship development? Eh, throw it in the time skip and reference it later. Key progression that would have gotten the audience invested in a dynamic? Idk say it happened off screen and assume viewers will fill in the blanks themselves. Super cool event where the characters made major plot progression? Just reference it in dialogue so we can jump ahead to this other scene that the creators actually care about.
I just. I couldn’t do it. I’m willing to give leeway to a show and fill in gaps, but I can’t handle being expected to wholesale create attachment to characters and relationships and plotlines and twists all on my own, while the show puts no work into it.
The thing about this show being an adaptation--and I almost put it in the above section--is that it wants all the benefits of being a unique story and all the benefits of being comics-based, and that just doesn’t work. This show expects everyone to have knowledge across the entire DC universe just to watch it, and lazily falls back on that rather than explain things or introduce characters itself. (And I’m saying this as a dedicated comics reader!!!) And it also expects you to read that show-specific tie-in comic, or look up the backstory for this event, or read that one blog post from that one guy that totally explains the important thing that they never bothered to give any time to on the show.
If I were going to try to boil the problems with this show down to one thing, I would say this:
YJTV wants to be its own, unique, massive, sprawling superhero universe, but it’s a fucking half-hour TV show. And there is no stretch of the imagination in which that works.
#*#ask#anon#*dc#dc#yjtv#take two of trying to write this without tumblr erasing it all ughhh#for the sake of keeping this post focused i'm dropping misc examples in the tags:#(1)#so many characters being barely introduced or not introduced at all#(most of the s2 additions but even going back to rocket in s1)#but then the show expecting you to still care about and invest in them as if they were treated like real characters#(2) basically every single important development and event in the conner/mgann relationship after s1 happening?? off screen????#(3) a scene i cannot remember the details of (at the end of a season i think) that is supposed to be a big victorious moment-#showing how well connected and respected nightwing is and what a good leader he is#except the show literally never did anything to build to it or show it or even make that a real part of dick's character#they just expect you to project it over from comics#(4) every vague reference to jason todd where you're required to already know the story to glean anything from it#(5) some line of dialogue where bart (?) offhandedly references a funeral for a character and i had to literally rewind-#to realize that he was talking about a side side character who was never on the show and no one without additional comics knowledge would kn#*know#but they still thought just dropping funeral without explanation was a good writing choice somehow#(6) oh!! speaking of the terrible i hate it thing they did to clark and conner!!#having conner spend all s1 angsting over wanting clark to be his dad and then at the start of s2 be like#wow we're brothers now and it's great! this off screen development was totally fulfilling and meaningful! don't worry about seeing it!#(i mean no wonder people who ONLY watched yjtv think them being brothers is disappointing. it was in the show.)#(but yes i still resent the show for pushing the father/son thing in the first place because them being brothers is great actually)#(and how dare you do clark like that. he doesn't deserve it.)#ok so maybe i should have put this in the post because that's a lot#whatever i leave it to the judgement of peer review

Really am going to miss "The Flash". Liked the finale even if it was a bit more subdued than I thought it would be. I was a fan of the 90s "Flash" TV show that only got 1 season before it was cancelled, so I'm so glad we were able to get 9 even if I do think it probably should've ended before that just due to the writing. There were still things I liked in the later seasons, but still glad we had it this long. Very happy too that they brought Caitlin back and Eddie as well and they stayed alive at the end. Also happy Barry and Iris finally had baby Nora, and Joe and Cecile got engaged. Not mad they left it open ended too even though we know it's unlikely we'll ever see this version of the characters again with the new DCU. It's also the ended of the Arrowverse and I loved all of those shows and it's sad to see them all gone now. Even likely both "Superman and Lois" and "Gotham Knights" won't stay either on The CW (or broadcast TV in general), as we still don't know their fates, so it's possible there will be no DC shows on The CW anymore. I am excited for what the DCU is planning, as well as the Elsewords movies/shows like Matt Reeves' "The Batman", "Joker 2", and if there's more announced, but it's a huge change to get used to and after losing all of these. So again I'm glad we had this show for as long as we did and Grant's Barry is still my favorite version of the character and still hoping there's a cameo in "The Flash" movie next month even if it's like how his cameo was in "Titans" and they just use footage from the show. LOL :)
