I can’t believe I haven’t yet posted about on of the coolest moments of my life!!!!
Meet Frogger!
This is the lunar mining rover my team and I built for the annual National NASA robotics competition. It took us a whole years worth of work, but after 6 years, the Embry-Riddle Lunabotics team is back in the game!!!!
We may have had the smallest budget and the least amount of experience with competition (bc most of us are undergrads), but we got 15th place out of 43 teams AND we got interviewed by some NASA officials for our unique design!
It may not look impressive, but to me, this is one of the greatest things I’ve ever built, and going to this competition is one of my greatest achievements of all time.

“let me work.”
“no, i’m not letting you work until you give me some attention,” he demanded.
you scoffed loudly, still not looking up at him from your textbook. “don’t you already get enough attention from the media and the fans?”
he had to hold back a scoff, rolling his eyes at the idea. he didn’t want attention from fans. he wanted your attention! but he didn’t want to tell you that and sound like some desperate nerd — because he wasn’t! he was him after all, handsome, popular, and definitely not obsessed with you.
“not enough, princess. besides, those people fawn over the actor!me, not the real me, ya know—”
“i don’t fawn over you at all, so i don’t know what you’re on about right now.”
“oh.” his smirk faded a bit.
that was true, he realized. you despised him, that was for certain. but he wanted you to want him the way he wanted you.
his gaze watched you intently as you wrote on your notebook, looking down at the paper and not at him. he was jealous of the paper. he wished you were looking at him instead.
but his fans would’ve threatened you until you unalived yourself if they knew. they would’ve ruined your life if they knew. you couldn’t be together, you never could.
so you sighed, once again choosing to ignore the subtle pout on his face and how you fell down the stairs one day thinking about it. how he probably thought you hated him right now, and you’d do nothing to change that.
why?
because you were a coward.

Hey,lets talk about this little problem.
I wanted to talk about this problem that I've been experiencing for a while, and I finally got the courage to talk about it because I saw other people complaining about the same problem.

I've lost count of how many xReader fanfics I've started reading and out of nowhere the character appears with a name, and then it's like a bucket of cold water that just leaves me sad and frustrated, I know that no one is obliged to please anyone, but please use the right tags.
I don't mean to be rude, seriously, because they're great fanfics but I don't think it's cool to trick people to get more likes.
And this is not just in one fandom but many.
This isn't personal, it's more of a vent, because as soon as I block the user, someone always appears to do the same thing again.
I'm not a writer, I don't know how hard it is to be one, we appreciate you, but this is really frustrating.
Thank you for reading this and I'm sorry if I offended you in any way.
Oh, and the reader having a “nickname” in your fanfic (that is an actual name) means it’s not an xReader either, bye.

anyway she’s a rising ATP pilot (probably at embry riddle though she’s a midwest girl at heart). then worsening family issues and a traumatic hangar fire cause her severe untreated mental illness to flare up. ashfur finds out and threatens to leak her medical records and get her grounded so she causes his crash. when they start to investigate the accident she cracks under the pressure and tells everyone. then when she gets grounded she just fucking disappears so everyone assumes she’s dead. she actually moves to alaska (under an alias) and flies cargo under part 135 and fallen leaves is her flight dispatcher. her farAIM is her most prized possession she loves to recite CFRs from memory. are you writing this down are you taking notes.

If you’re looking for a tailored, hands-on approach to flight training, Florida Flyers delivers exceptional value.
Key Factors to Consider When Choosing a Flight School
Selecting the right flight school involves more than looking at rankings or popularity. Several factors can influence your experience and long-term success as a pilot. Here are some considerations:
Accreditation and Reputation: Ensure the school is accredited by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and has a strong track record of producing skilled pilots.
Fleet and Facilities: A modern fleet and advanced simulators can significantly enhance your training experience.
Location and Weather: Schools in areas with favorable weather conditions, like Florida or Arizona, allow for consistent flying schedules.
Cost and Financial Aid: Flight training is a significant investment, so explore tuition costs, financing options, and scholarships.
Career Support: Schools with strong industry connections and job placement programs can help you secure positions after graduation.
Taking the time to visit schools, speak with current students and instructors, and review their resources will help you make an informed decision.

By the fire | Embry Call
Tumblr media
a/n: this one got away from me, but i LOVE it.
request; Can you do Embry X reader where he bumps into Her and imprints but is too scared to tell her because he soon has to tell reader about the pack and doesn't want to hurt reader so Kim asks reader to lunch. You can choose the other details
warnings; i dont think any <3
EMBRY;
He couldn't believe it.
He hadn't seen you since you'd gone to Forks high school, but you'd always been around, right? Right? He suddenly couldn't remember.
Embry'd bumped into you, literally bumped - as he was walking backwards in his mom's store, goofing with Jared and Quil about... he didn't even remember what - when he knocked into you. You'd been talking to his mom, when he knocked something right out of your hands. Quil and Jared had continued laughing, but when he caught your eye, nothing was funny.
Nothing was funny but everything was beautiful. He'd never noticed the colour of your eyes, the depths they held, the secrets they told. He never noticed the way you tilt your head slightly when looking at something. He felt a knot tie around his heart, felt it beat rapidly against the tight coils. Gravity shifted, planets moved, the stars changed, all of it a map leading him to you.
"I'm sorry," he choked out, trying to pick up the little figurine that fell at the same time as you, when you both reached for it, your hands touched, and he felt electricity shock all the way up to his elbow. "I'm sorry," he repeated, moving his hand for the trinket, picking it up and handing it to you. "I'm so sorry."
"It's okay," you said, smiling, "no harm no foul."
Your smile made his stomach drop like he was on a rollercoaster, you were so beautiful, he wanted to pull you close and never let go. Wanted to protect you from anyone that may cause you harm. wanted to make sure you were always happy, always warm, always comfortable.
You made the world turn.
"Are you okay?" you asked, "you kinda look like you're gunna throw up."
"Never better," he said quietly, mustering up a weak smile.
He was filled with excitement and anxiety. Suddenly riddled with worry and doubt, and just genuine concern for you. Were you dating anyone? What were your friends like? What were your hobbies?"
"Anyway," his mom, Tiffany said, breaking his stare from you, "you're hired, I'll let the owners know."
"Really? We never even had an interview," you said, smiling widely.
"I feel good about it, I can see the good in you," she winked at embry, "Can you start on the weekend?"
"Yeah of course! I'll see you then!"
Tiffany left then, someone else trying to check out at the register. You turned back to Embry, smile wild and genuinely. His heart could've melted than and there.
"What luck," you said, hitting him with your elbow playfully, "you might be my good luck charm."
Quil and Jared were still in the store, pretending to be interesting in some wooden figurines on the shelf, but were also clearly trying to sneak peeks at the two of you. Embry tried to subtly shoo them away, but they just pretended not to see.
"I have to get going," he said, ending the conversation. He noticed the disappointment on your face, and he felt bad. You would've been feeling everything that he was feeling, but you wouldn't understand. Or did you? He didn't know, did you feel your soul change? Your priorities shift? Did you feel different down to the core, like he did?
"Oh, okay, yeah," you smiled, "maybe i'll see you around?"
"You will," he said, resisting the urge to lean forward and touch you, brush your hair behind your ears. Instead he clenched his fists, leaving them dangling by his side. "I know where you are." He stuttered when you looked confused, "work! where you work i meant..." Jared snorted behind him, trying his hardest not to laugh.
"I'll see you later embry," you laughed, waving goodbye to Tiffany and leaving the store he watched as you lifted your hood up, sheilding from the light rain and left the beach.
"She knows my name," he said, goofy grin on his face.
"You're an idiot," Jared laughed, "I know where you are??? No game whatsoever."
"Shut up," Quil said, elbowing him. "He was nervous."
"What do I do?" Embry asked, feeling lost. You weren't anywhere near this, he shouldn't bring you into this, right? Wouldn't bringing you into this life be more dangerous?
"What do you mean? protect her, I don't know, hangout with her?" Jared said, "it's kind of self explanatory."
Tumblr media
YOU;
What a weird morning. First, you're walking down First Beach which you haven't done in who knows how long, and you see the souvenirs shop and a 'now hiring' sign in the window - which never happens because the last person they hired was Tiffany Call and that was over ten years ago, so you decided to go in. And when you're talking to Tiffany about applying, her son, Embry, who you haven't seen in years bumps into you and... and suddenly nothing made any sense at all.
You thought you had it all figured out, wanted a quiet life in the woods. had no real desire to leave this small town - and then suddenly, you didn't know anything. Didn't what you wanted, or with who... like you locked eyes with this boy and the axis your world revolved around just... changed. There was something new, a feeling you didn't understand, a feeling you wanted to run towards, and away from. Wanted to push, and pull.
Walking home from the gift shop that day was otherworldly. You wanted to be around Embry again, not to be creepy you just... you wanted him around. Felt like maybe he had a place in your life. But you hadn't really seen him around much... and it sounds creepy but you kinda thought, well, it seemed like you always kind of felt like he was around. In the dead of the night, with a sky full of stars, you would think - maybe it's crazy - but you would swear he was nearby.
But you hadn't seen him, and you had no other reason to think he was around except for an inkling, a tingle that said, 'oh good, he's here.' It helped you sleep. Made you feel comfortable.
That was nearly a week ago, and now you were reading a book, sitting as comfortably as you could on the plastic chair behind the register of the shop, waiting for anyone to need you or ask for help, but it'd been a slow day.
The bell above the door dinged, startling you out of the paragraph you were reading.
It was Kim... uh... Kim, you racked your brain trying to remember her last name but came up with nothing. She smiled at you, browsing around the store for a moment. She'd grown up around here, you had to wonder what she would need in a souvenir shop. But you smiled nonetheless, closing your book and making yourself available.
"Nice day out there," she said, toying with a necklace, twirling a few beads around the string. "Looks like there might be some nice sun later."
"I sure hope so," you said, tapping your fingers quickly on the counter, "my flowers are begging for some sunshine."
She laughed, "yeah, sounds about right."
"Anything in particular you're looking for?" you asked, rounding the counter and joining her by the jewelry. She looked at you, something soft in her features that felt so familiar, so welcoming. "I swear I'm not watching you, you're just the first person I've talked to in like, two hours."
Kim laughed again, "Slow day?"
"Like you wouldn't believe," you said, picking up a green beaded necklace. "This would suit you, I think."
She looked at it for a second, taking it from your hands and putting it around her neck without fastening it. "Yeah, I think you're right. There's a fire tonight, would be nice to wear something new for a change."
"Sales is easy," you joked, walking back behind the register, ringing in the total on the prehistoric register.
"Mm, I'm pretty easy to persuade, not sure if it should be an example of your salesmanship..."
"The boss doesn't need to know that though," you smiled, taking her money and returning her change.
"Hey you should come hangout sometime," she said, "maybe I can take you to a late lunch at the diner before the fire tonight?"
"You wanna take me to lunch?"
She blushed, "not as like a date... not that I wouldn't want to! I mean... I just thought-"
Your laugh cut her off, "Kim, I'm kidding. Lunch would be great."
"Funny," she rolled her eyes, but smiled. "I'll come pick you up later. Still at the same house?"
You nodded, and she left with a smile, waving goodbye. The bell rang again as she left, and you watched her trot across the road, getting into a car with Jared Cameron, the boy who'd been in the store with Embry a couple days ago.
Tumblr media
After your shift finished - and nearly your book due to the shocking lack of customers - you got home and changed, grabbing a shower before getting ready quickly.
Kim was out front, patiently waiting while you pulled on your shoes.
When you joined her in the car, she was just getting off the phone, speaking quickly and hushed. You looked around the area before you got in, that same funny feeling that maybe Embry was somewhere close.
"Ready?" she asked, kicking you out of your own thoughts.
"Yeah, totally..."
"Everything okay?"
"Yeah, it's just..." you were desperate to share this with someone. Your mom was long gone, and your dad had been out at his brother's for the last month or so, hunting and fishing. Not that you'd want to tell your parents about the obsession you'd been having for the Call boy... "It's weird," you sighed, "I shouldn't bother you with it."
"Try me," she said.
And there was something about her kind smile, and the soft look in her eye... you did. You spilled your guts all the way to the diner, and continued explaining your bizarre interaction and feelings until just after you'd ordered, that's when you finished explaining you'd hoped he'd come by the store, but he hasn't. And explained how you had this weird sensation that he was there when he wasn't.
"...and it's extra crazy cause we didn't even say that much to each other, like, I just felt... something. Like a cosmic connection? I guess? Is that nuts?"
"I don't think that's nuts at all," she shook her head, smiling and thanking the waitress who delivered your food. "You know, the same thing happened to me with Jared, and it turns out he had been around when I thought he was."
"Really?"
"Really. Same exact thing..." Kim looked like she wanted to say more, but hesitated. She ate some fries instead.
"I just want him to come by like he said he would," you said, pushing your plate away. Suddenly, you weren't that hungry. "You know?"
"Maybe you should go to him?" she offered, waving a fry around before eating it. "He'll be at the fire tonight, you should come."
"Do you think I should?"
"It's not like an official meeting or anything, just a fire Emily and Sam wanted to throw," she said casually, "Sam Uley, I mean."
"I don't want to just show up uninvited," you blushed, slinking into your seat, but you thought about it.
"I'm inviting you!" she smiled, that genuine, kind smile... she was hard to say no to. It felt nice to hangout with someone, your friends had mostly left for college and you forgot how fun it was to yap.
"Okay," you said, straightening up, "okay, I will."
Tumblr media
It was nighttime when you and Kim pulled up to the fire. A starless sky, but a beautiful night.
There was a group of people already huddled around a fire, and the nerve you'd conjured up had began to fade. Would Embry think this is weird? Were you weird? No, no, Kim had insisted. This wasn't even your idea. Would Embry believe that?
"Babe, hey!" Jared said, scampering over to hug his girlfriend, kissing her cheek. "Hey, y/n, how's it going?"
"Fine thanks," you said, "nice fire."
"Paul did it," he said, "he's kind of the fire guy of the paaaaa-rty..." he smiled, laughing like he hadn't confused his words.
"Come meet everyone, they're all nice. No one bites," Kim whispered, "Maybe Paul bites, just a little."
"Everyone," Jared announced, "this is y/n! Y/n, this is; Rachel, Paul, Emily, Sam, Quil, Jacob, Embry, Seth, annnnnnnnd Leah."
Embry's eyes were wide, locked on you from the moment Jared walked up with you. You felt embarrassed, like maybe coming here was a bad idea. You sat next to Kim, Rachel on your otherside, who smiled kindly at you, introducing herself again, and the conversation continued easily, and it was fun. But Embry was quiet, watching you as you laughed with Kim and Rachel, talking about an elementary teacher you'd all had in different years, enjoying a night out for the first time in a long time.
But you felt his eyes. They didn't seem angry, or judgemental... didn't seem like he thought you were a freak. And yet, Embry watched you, unable to focus on anything else. Quil nudged him, encouraging him to talk to you, but Embry brushed him off, looking into the fire for less than a minute before his eyes wandered back to you.
"We need more wood," Paul said, clapping Embry on the back hard enough that he lurched forward a little, "your turn."
"I went last time," he said, rolling his eyes, but getting up do to it anyway.
"And for your lovely assistant," Paul pointed at different people as he said; "eeny, meeny, miney, new girl," Paul landed at you, smiling as Rachel elbowed him roughly in the side. Not quietly at all he said, "What? That was subtle til you hit me."
"I don't need help," Embry said quietly, watching as you got up to do it without question.
"No it's okay, I wanna help," you said.
Embry led you over to a small shed, it's only contents were stacks of wood. He started loading up his hands, gesturing for you to stack a couple more on top. You started, but a log slid in your hand funny, and you yelped, dropping it in his arms and looking at your hand.
In an instant, Embry dropped the pile, grabbing your hand in his and looking at it, searching for the injury.
"Splinter," you said, "sorry."
"Does it hurt? Are you hurt?"
"I mean it stings a little, I guess, but I'm fine." But you didn't pull away, you wanted him to keep holding you, it was warm, and soft, and he smelled good. Like honey and oak. And he was so tall, towering over you but holding you so gingerly, inspecting your sliver.
"C'mon," he said, keeping your wrist in his grip, careful not to disturb the little piece of log in your hand, and led you out of the shed and into a house. Embry led you to the bathroom, bringing you into the small room and shuffling through the medicine cabinet with one hand, in the other - he still hadn't let yours go.
"Hey, I'm okay," you said quietly, "I can do it if you want, it's all good."
"I'll do it," he said gruffly, continuing his search for tweezers. When he found them, looking at your hand again. As if it were a medical procedure, he took a breath, and then grabbed the splinter, pulling it out swiftly but gently, making sure it didn't separate and get stuck. "You feel okay?"
"I'm fine, Embry," you giggled, "It was just a splinter."
He smiled a little, light blush on his cheeks as he looked around the small bathroom. "Still," he looked at you, resolve to avoid you shattering and disapatting, he wouldn't be strong enough to fight it for one minute longer. "They hurt sometimes."
You laughed, "yeah, I guess they do."
Embry continued to hold your hand, looking at you with those eyes that just made you melt. It was crazy to feel this way about him already right? Crazy that if he asked you to be his, you would be? It was too soon. But still... you wanted him to.
"We should get back," you said, gesturing towards the fire. "They might get worried."
"Wait," he said, looking back in the cabinet, pulling a small bandaid out, covering the tiny hole in your hand. "Don't want anything to get in there."
"Thanks," you said, and when he finally dropped your hand, you wished he hadn't.
You led him out of the house, and back to the shed - where he didn't let you help again for fear of another life threatening injury, and brought the wood over the fire.
And Embry was more animated when he rejoined everyone, opting to sit between you and Rachel rather than over by his best friends. He was close to you, but he didn't touch you again for the rest of the night.
Tumblr media
Kim had driven you home before it got too late, and now you were in your bed, trying to sleep but you were stuck daydreaming about those few moments in the bathroom. It was playing on repeat. The way he looked at you, took care of you. All of it, it was so... attractive? You were so drawn to him.
A knock on the door made you jump, and you thought about not answering it. But there was something in your heart that said you should, that gentle nudge that Embry was nearby made you think.... yea, okay.
So you did, you swung the door open, and Embry was there, standing in the glow of the moon. He looked sheepish, goofy smile on his mouth that just made you smile.
"Embry?"
"I forgot something at the fire, or... I mean, maybe I remembered something?"
"Well, what did you forget or remember?"
And he didn't answer in words, but instead caressed your cheeks with his hands, and pulled you in for a kiss. It was soft, delicate like he was. You closed your eyes, reaching up on your tippy toes to push yourself deeper into the kiss, closer into Embry, like you wanted to be engulfed by him, surrounded and ensnared by the all thing Embry.
His mouth worked against yours, movements equal parts measured and natural, calculated and instinct. He walked forward, forcing you into the house where he kicked the door shut behind him, keeping you tight against him. His tongue sliding against your lower lip, but the pulling it between his teeth, biting just hard enough to make you gasp.
But then he switched, kissing you slower, more tender than you've ever known. Until he pulled away, holding you close but just looking at you. He smiled, it was so small, you nearly missed it, the way the corners of his mouth twitched upwards. And he kissed you again, one lingering peck. Before pulling away, trailing his hands slowly over your arms, the light touch of his fingers on your arms made you shiver. And when he got to your hands, he entertwined your fingers, holding both your hands.
"You're so beautiful," he said, "I'm sorry I didn't come see you sooner."
"Forgiven," you said, meaning it.
He smiled. Every single feature on his face was sculpted and perfect. He let go of one hand, brushing your hair off of your face, tucking it behind your ear. "But don't answer the door like that at this hour again, too dangerous."
You laughed, hitting him softly. He laughed too, bringing you into a hug, pulling you into his chest.
He would have to tell you everything. There was still a lot unspoken, but he would tell you everything tomorrow, but for now, for right now, he was just gunna hold you. And that was enough.

John A Hagins IV, Florida inmate F82330, born 2002, incarceration intake February 2025 at age 22, scheduled for release December 2029
Attempted Manslaughter. Attempted Terrorism, Written Threats to Kill or Cause Injury
In February 2025, an ex-Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University student who threatened toshoot up the school was sentenced to eight years in state prison followed by 22 years of probation.
John Hagins IV, 22, pleaded no contest to attempted manslaughter with a firearm, attempted terrorism, and written threats to kill or do bodily injury, each a second-degree felony. Hagins faced up to 45 years in prison.
The Judge adjudicated Hagins guilty and, in addition to sentencing him, ordered that he not own any firearms or enter any college or school campuses.
Hagins' shoulders slumped as the judge pronounced the prison sentence.
Hagins received credit for the approximately three years he has been held at the Volusia County Branch Jail awaiting sentencing.
A Daytona Beach Police SWAT team arrested Hagins on Dec. 9, 2021, as he left his Acklins Circle apartment. He carried a backpack with a Kel-Tec firearm and 300 to 400 rounds of ammunition.
Hagins told police he was going to a shooting range, but he admitted to telling his friends about shooting up the university and referenced the 1999 Columbine High School shooting, according to testimony at the first part of his sentencing hearing in a prior News-Journal story.
The Assistant State Attorney asked for a prison sentence in the "double digits."
Hagins' defense attorney argued before sentencing that Hagins was just making stupid, idiotic jokes and had no intention of shooting up a school. The defense attorney asked the judge to sentence Hagins as a youthful offender and offered to waive the credit he would get for his time served so the court would have control over him for the next five years.
Hagins had been locked up in the Volusia County Branch Jail since his arrest and had been a model inmate, serving as a mediator in the jail and doing any jobs requested of him, including cleaning showers.
Hagins took the stand and testified that he wanted to get on with his life after 38 months in the Volusia County Branch Jail awaiting a resolution to his case.
He asked the judge to withhold adjudication so he could still pursue his career goal of becoming a pilot.
Hagins said under questioning by his attorney that he had no plans to shoot up the school.
He said he had been a model inmate while at the jail, helping to clean the jail and mediate disputes between inmates. He said he learned how to play chess and write in cursive.
“I’m not a danger to anyone,” Hagins said.
“To say that I learned my lesson is a tremendous understatement,” Hagins said.
He denied being stressed by school but he said some of the classes were hard.
He denied being depressed.
“I said something stupid — immature things which scared a few people,” Hagins said. “I’ve learned from this and will make sure it never happens again.”

Do you have any Ida Brady headcanons for pre-integrated AU? 👀
Oooh yes I do, thanks for asking!
It has occurred to me how we’ve met her when she’s legit at her lowest and coldest. So while she might be impressive AF right now, she’s not exactly the warm hearted sister Johnny could tell you of, the insane dark-horse risk taker Egan will bet on any day, the tireless and compassionate advocate of her girls, or the incredibly conflicted woman Rosie Rosenthal has the audacity to make laugh before Victory rolls round.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ok, full disclosure, there’s plenty about this AU I’ve not even bothered figuring out as it would drive me mad and stifle the creativity, so plenty of the aspects and rules of integration, etc, have been left nebulous even in my own brain.
The short of this concept, however, is that the Bloody 100th became the first (and likely only? maybe another by the end of the war) bomber group to intergrate. It added to their reputation as a crazy and undisciplined force, an experiment of sorts. Full of mad hatters and women who deserved to get shot out of the sky for attempting to engage in something as masculine aerial combat -it made the men both defensive of their group’s capabilities and that of their female fellows. Sink or swim together, and by god, they flew instead.
This also meant Ida Brady became the highest ranking woman of her sex in the air force at the time, although she was predictably never given close to a full squadron as was her “due” as a Lt. Colonel.
It was a bit of a surprise then when she pushed for full integration of the group, that she should not be over women only, and not all women should answer strictly to her. This was adopted by the time of Harding’s command and the girls’ broader deployment.
Old habits die hard however, and “Ida’s Banshees” were still toasted at the Silver Wings club, although technically many fellas were counted amongst them by then.
How’d she get into aviation? well my dears -it starts with a stock market crash
The Brady family did alright for much of the 1930’s, jobs in rural New York were hard to come by yet the soil was good for food and the community close, the desperate poverty of the big cities wasn’t as starkly obvious or quick to ruin out there. But just because the country takes a turn up doesn’t always mean a single family will, too. There’s always unforeseen twists and turns.
Her two brothers could add to the family with what work they could get, or apprentice as Johnny did. But Ida? Those should have been her courting years, according to mama. Mrs. Brady was a good woman, a product of her times and upbringing and an immigrant child herself. It wasn’t cruel to the Irish, it was custom, to send a child away to better serve their futures.
And so 1937 found Ida seated on a train headed down to an Aunt’s house in Miami, Florida, to help with Uncle’s Travel Agency and earn a wage and hopefully meet some young fellas
There may have been young fellas in Miami but Ida didn’t have an eye for them, she wanted money and security and and to be back with her tight knit family in New York.
Uncle’s little venture was a sprawling enterprise growing free and wild since the mid 20’s in Florida’s sticky air. Sure it was a travel agency but it also coordinated areal mail runs that also accommodated a growing number of passengers, and on the side was Uncle’s true passion: the aviation school of Embry and Riddle.
Named after himself (Riddle) and his business partner Embry, her uncle had been battling the government’s pesky fingers in his training programs since the 20’s and by the late 30’s —when Ida arrived— he had reopened three different times.
Such tenacity and unreserved frustration shown by someone she so admired in regards to authoritarian overreach cemented in Ida’s mind a very clear impression that the persecution she later faced was not due fully to her sex. Instead she chose to consider it persecution of the old American trait of not giving a damn about the pesky ball and chain of higher power. Yes she appreciated her rules in the army, but in civilian enterprises? She has definite opinions about leaving well enough alone
Becoming a pilot for Ida was something that happened out of necessity and opportunity than an immediate passion. If anything it terrified her a bit, but then again, so had canoeing down the rapids in Maine with Johnny. And Ida never backed down from what scared her, only what she felt was wrong. And as far as she could see, God hadn’t said nothin’ against either man or woman flying around. So, having decided to become a pilot and help her uncle in his dreams, she became an excellent one
By 1940 Uncle Riddle had yoked with the U.S. Army Air Corps Training Program, his private school had produced 250 students and certified them as pilots the previous year and he was much in demand.
Ida Brady had been one of his chief instructors and wasn’t that a trip?
When war broke out she was recruited by and immediately joined the WASPS, training women students to transport bombers this time.
You think being a dmv test trainer is scary? Try strapping wings to those kids. It’s hell to be excellent at a thing and sit on your hands while someone nearly kills you both with their inexperience. Yet that was her day job for almost a year, and she had a temperament oddly suited to it, calm, decently patient and lethally critical when needed, she was respected and her students became not only respected but fully equipped to keep themselves and their cargo safe by the end.
When the Air Force pitched its experimental Integrated Squadron, Ida already knew the majority of the girls joining would prove to have been her students.
I am not sure she jumped at a combat position immediately, between her traditional upbringing, crucial training role and suspicion of the army screwing over the whole endeavor, I think she would be wary.
There’s speculations about who talked her into it, some say her brother had reported the dreadful discipline and treatment of the 100th’s nearly disbanded female force to her, and driven by stubborn pride in her protégés, Ida Brady had shown up and demanded they at least be nixed with dignity.
Instead she found herself training both men and women to stay the fuck in the air…the whole point of their particular branch
They didn’t get nixed. And Ida was suddenly a squadron commander without an actual squadron
By England I imagine she is still fighting for inclusions in the crews, there’s lots of finicky dealings regarding who gets sent up. She is technically Cleven and Egan’s superior but even she has the sense to know that blending in is her best bet, so she does her utmost and is respected accordingly. An odd third wheel that somehow adds a subtle but significant amount of gravitas and dignity to the whole gang, a rules and regulations gal but on because her own conduct is examined under a microscope by those higher ups who’d like the can they whole production
Under Harding’s command, as the crews become scarce, there is no discrimination left.
Those Who Can, fly.
Ida Brady goes out each time, if her girls are out so is she, even if the integration she fought for is entirely complete.
When she’s downed two days after the disastrous Munster mission that claimed her brother and Egan, it’s just in time, she’s needed on the ground by her girls who’d been lost earlier
Going ahead and tagging in case anyone is interested in this wack list of headcanons ha

The United States has returned to the lunar surface for the first time in more than 50 years after a privately-built spacecraft named Odysseus capped a nail-biting 73-minute descent from orbit with a touchdown near the moon’s south pole.
Amid celebrations of what NASA hailed “a giant leap forward,” there was no immediate confirmation of the status or condition of the lander, other than it had reached its planned landing site at crater Malapert A.
But later Intuitive Machines, the Texas-based company that built the first commercial craft to land on the moon, said the craft was “upright and starting to send data.”
The statement on X said mission managers were “working to downlink the first images from the lunar surface.”
The so-called “soft landing” on Thursday, which Steve Altemus, the company’s founder, had given only an 80% chance of succeeding, was designed to open a new era of lunar exploration as NASA works towards a scheduled late-2026 mission to send humans back there.
“Welcome to the moon,” Altemus said when touchdown when the 5.23pm touchdown was eventually confirmed, after about 10 minutes in which Odysseus was out of contact.
It was the first time any US-built spacecraft had landed on the moon since NASA’s most recent crewed visit, the Apollo 17 mission in December 1972, and the first visit by commercial vehicle following last month’s failure of Peregrine One, another partnership between the space agency and a private company, Astrobotic.
Tumblr media
“Today, for the first time in more than a half century, the US has returned to the moon. Today, for the first time in the history of humanity, a commercial company, an American company, launched and led the voyage up there,” Bill Nelson, the NASA administrator, said.
“What a triumph. Odysseus has taken the moon. This feat is a giant leap forward for all of humanity.”
There was no video of Odysseus’s fully autonomous descent, which slowed to about 2.2mph at 33ft above the surface.
But a camera built by students at Florida’s Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University was designed to fall and take pictures immediately before touchdown, and NASA cameras were set to photograph the ground from the spacecraft.
The 14ft (4.3 metres) hexagonal, six-legged Nova-C lander, affectionately nicknamed Odie by Intuitive Machines employees, is part of NASA’s commercial lunar payload services (CLPS) initiative in which the agency awards contracts to private partners, largely to support the Artemis program.
NASA contributed $118m to get it off the ground, with Intuitive Machines funding a further $130m ahead of its February 15 launch from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center on a Falcon 9 rocket from Elon Musk’s SpaceX company.
Tumblr media
The IM-1 mission, like the doomed Peregrine effort, is carrying a payload of scientific equipment designed to gather data about the lunar environment, specifically in the rocky region chosen as the landing site for NASA’s crewed Artemis III mission planned for two years’ time.
It is a hazardous area – “pockmarked with all of these craters,” according to Nelson – but chosen because it is believed to be rich in frozen water that could help sustain a permanent lunar base crucial to future human missions to Mars.
Scientists announced last year that they believed tiny glass beads strewn across the moon’s surface contained potentially “billions of tonnes of water” that could be extracted and used on future missions.
The risks are worth it, Nelson told CNN on Thursday, “to see if there is water in abundance. Because if there’s water, there’s rocket fuel: hydrogen, and oxygen. And we could have a gas station on the south pole of the moon.”
The planned operational life of the solar powered lander is only seven days, before the landing site about 186 miles from the moon’s south pole moves into Earth’s shadow.
But NASA hopes that will be long enough for analysis of how soil there reacted to the impact of the landing.
Other instruments will focus on space weather effects on the lunar surface, while a network of markers for communication and navigation will be deployed.
“Odysseus, powered by a company called Intuitive Machines, launched upon a SpaceX rocket, carrying a bounty of NASA scientific instruments, is bearing the dream of a new adventure in science, innovation, and American leadership in space,” Nelson said.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Through Artemis, NASA’s return-to-the-moon program that also has longer-term visions of crewed missions to Mars within the next two decades, the US seeks to stay ahead of Russia and China, both of which are planning their own human lunar landings.
Only the US has previously landed astronauts in six Apollo missions between 1969 and 1972, while five countries have placed uncrewed spacecraft there.
Japan joined the US, Russia, China, and India last month when its Smart Lander for Investigating the Moon (Slim) made a successful, if awkward touchdown after a three-month flight.
Two further Intuitive Machines launches are scheduled for later this year, including an ice drill to extract ingredients for rocket fuel, and another Nova-C lander containing a small Nasa rover and four small robots that will explore surface conditions.

US returns to lunar surface with for first time in over 50 years
23 February 2024
A spacecraft built and flown by Texas-based company Intuitive Machines landed near the south pole of the moon, the first US touchdown on the lunar surface in more than half a century, and the first ever achieved entirely by the private sector.
Communication with Odysseus seemed be lost during the final stages of the landing, leaving mission control uncertain as to the precise condition and position of the lander, according to flight controllers heard in the webcast.

NASA launching rockets into radio-disrupting clouds
NASA is launching rockets from a remote Pacific island to study mysterious, high-altitude cloud-like structures that can disrupt critical communication systems. The mission, called Sporadic-E ElectroDynamics, or SEED, opens its three-week launch window from Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands on Friday, June 13.
The atmospheric features SEED is studying are known as Sporadic-E layers, and they create a host of problems for radio communications. When they are present, air traffic controllers and marine radio users may pick up signals from unusually distant regions, mistaking them for nearby sources. Military operators using radar to see beyond the horizon may detect false targets—nicknamed "ghosts"—or receive garbled signals that are tricky to decipher. Sporadic-E layers are constantly forming, moving, and dissipating, so these disruptions can be difficult to anticipate.
Sporadic-E layers form in the ionosphere, a layer of Earth's atmosphere that stretches from about 40 to 600 miles (60 to 1,000 kilometers) above sea level. Home to the International Space Station and most Earth-orbiting satellites, the ionosphere is also where we see the greatest impacts of space weather. Primarily driven by the sun, space weather causes myriad problems for our communications with satellites and between ground systems. A better understanding of the ionosphere is key to keeping critical infrastructure running smoothly.
The ionosphere is named for the charged particles, or ions, that reside there. Some of these ions come from meteors, which burn up in the atmosphere and leave traces of ionized iron, magnesium, calcium, sodium, and potassium suspended in the sky. These "heavy metals" are more massive than the ionosphere's typical residents and tend to sink to lower altitudes, below 90 miles (140 kilometers). Occasionally, they clump together to create dense clusters known as Sporadic-E layers.
"These Sporadic-E layers are not visible to naked eye, and can only be seen by radars. In the radar plots, some layers appear like patchy and puffy clouds, while others spread out, similar to an overcast sky, which we call blanketing Sporadic-E layer" said Aroh Barjatya, the SEED mission's principal investigator and a professor of engineering physics at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. The SEED team includes scientists from Embry-Riddle, Boston College in Massachusetts, and Clemson University in South Carolina.
"There's a lot of interest in predicting these layers and understanding their dynamics because of how they interfere with communications," Barjatya said.
A mystery at the equator
Scientists can explain Sporadic-E layers when they form at midlatitudes but not when they appear close to Earth's equator—such as near Kwajalein Atoll, where the SEED mission will launch.
In the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, Sporadic-E layers can be thought of as particle traffic jams.
Think of ions in the atmosphere as miniature cars traveling single file in lanes defined by Earth's magnetic field lines. These lanes connect Earth end to end—emerging near the South Pole, bowing around the equator, and plunging back into the North Pole.
At Earth's midlatitudes, the field lines angle toward the ground, descending through atmospheric layers with varying wind speeds and directions. As the ions pass through these layers, they experience wind shear—turbulent gusts that cause their orderly line to clump together. These particle pileups form Sporadic-E layers.
But near the magnetic equator, this explanation doesn't work. There, Earth's magnetic field lines run parallel to the surface and do not intersect atmospheric layers with differing winds, so Sporadic-E layers shouldn't form. Yet, they do—though less frequently.
"We're launching from the closest place NASA can to the magnetic equator," Barjatya said, "to study the physics that existing theory doesn't fully explain."
Taking to the skies
To investigate, Barjatya developed SEED to study low-latitude Sporadic-E layers from the inside. The mission relies on sounding rockets—uncrewed suborbital spacecraft carrying scientific instruments. Their flights last only a few minutes but can be launched precisely at fleeting targets.
Beginning the night of June 13, Barjatya and his team will monitor ALTAIR (ARPA Long-Range Tracking and Instrumentation Radar), a high-powered, ground-based radar system at the launch site, for signs of developing Sporadic-E layers. When conditions are right, Barjatya will give the launch command. A few minutes later, the rocket will be in flight.
On ascent, the rocket will release colorful vapor tracers. Ground-based cameras will track the tracers to measure wind patterns in three dimensions. Once inside the Sporadic-E layer, the rocket will deploy four subpayloads—miniature detectors that will measure particle density and magnetic field strength at multiple points. The data will be transmitted back to the ground as the rocket descends.
On another night during the launch window, the team will launch a second, nearly identical rocket to collect additional data under potentially different conditions.
Barjatya and his team will use the data to improve computer models of the ionosphere, aiming to explain how Sporadic-E layers form so close to the equator.
"Sporadic-E layers are part of a much larger, more complicated physical system that is home to space-based assets we rely on every day," Barjatya said. "This launch gets us closer to understanding another key piece of Earth's interface to space."
