OC Halloween Challenge 2023
Day Seven: The Comedic Relief
Honestly, they make even the scariest movies bearable. They’re almost never the main character but almost always the most liked. They say laughter is medicine for the soul, so which of your ocs soothes the characters and the situation with a joke made at the worst of times?
Zinnia blinked slowly at her best friend, at the silence that followed her stupid little joke. Even in the midst of everything else, Skye had found a moment of peace. A moment to say words nobody else would have dared.
Ronan’s bark of laughter cut through the tension in an instant. He slapped a hand to his lips, but the noise was already free. It had already set off a snigger from Jonas that the younger man didn’t bother to try stifling.
‘What?’ Skye asked innocently, the familiar mischievous tug of a smirk on her lips the thing that undid Zinnia’s own seriousness.
The clattering of their tin cans, an early warning system, cut the moment of peace short in an instant. Jonas was by the door in an instant, his attention surveying the little square that marked the entrance to their current hiding place.
‘Time to go,’ he said softly. The joy of Skye’s comment practically forgotten between one breath and the next.

I've seen a good number of people ask a question along the limes of "why do characters like Falin and hate Laios when they're so similar?" and i've also seen good analysis on the differences in how the touden siblings carry themselves that would, despite their shared traits, make a person gravitate to one more than the other.
But i feel like we've overseen one very central thing here.
People don't like Falin
Like... the average person in dungeon meshi doesn't like Falin. She was deeply ostrasized by her home village, in magic school she had zero friends before Marcille and the others generally saw her as strange and a bit offputting.
Tumblr media
Characters like Namari and Chilchuck like her well enough but not necessarily more than any other member of their party, including Laios. Neither Kabru nor his party think much of her. The canaries don't give a fuck about her. Toshiro's retainers don't see her as anything else than the weird foreign girl their boss has a crush on.
The reason we think everyone loves Falin is because, despite all the indifferent side characters, the 2 most important and central characters of the story are Laios and Marcille. Who are NOT representative of the average attitudes to Falin! But necromancy georg number 1 and 2 are our main eyes into the story and they love Falin so much that it colours our perspective of the whole world.
The only side character who qualifies as liking Falin and not Laios is Toshiro (at least at first, as he ends the story on much better terms with Laios) and that says a lot about his character, with him drifting to the quiet Falin precisely because of her oddness but being both uncomfortable with and deeply jealous of Laios' much more open expression of that oddness. Because he's a repressed guy from a culture where etiquette is incredibly important.
But like I said, that's a specific aspect of him, not to the world at large.
Because there's also people that click more with laios than with Falin.
Kabru, for one, who is initially distrustful of laios but clearly also deeply fascinated by him and drawn to him.
Minor spoilers, and you don't have to read too deeply into this, because I don't think Kabru particularly dislikes Falin or anything. But it's interesting that when he talks about his distrust of the toudens in ch.32 he's talking about them both. But his big friendship declaration in chapter 76 is aimed squarely at Laios, he doesn't say "you and your sister" he says "you"
Tumblr media
And Senshi!! He instantly clicks with Laios, well before he does so with anyone else in the party– who he also becomes friends with, it just takes a bit longer– specifically because they bond over their shared special interest in monsters!! Senshi is kind towards Falin and cares for her wellbeing, but he also... doesn't know her. The reason he is even here, helping to save her, is because he and Laios bonded over monsters and he wants to help his new friends out!
Of course, the theme of neurodivergent isolation is very present in Laios' story. I'm not denying that. He does turn people off, without meaning to and unable to fully understand why! But so does Falin. And just like there are people who like her despite of or even because of those traits, there are people who do the same with him.
In conclusion: "Average person loves Falin and hates Laios" factoid actually statistical error. Average person is neutral on both Falin and Laios. Georcille, Laiorg and Geoshiro, who live in the dungeon and think over 10,000 Falin-loving thoughts a day, are statistical outliers adn should not have been counted.

the fact that shakespeare was a playwright is sometimes so funny to me. just the concept of the "greatest writer of the English language" being a random 450-year-old entertainer, a 16th cent pop cultural sensation (thanks in large part to puns & dirty jokes & verbiage & a long-running appeal to commoners). and his work was made to be watched not read, but in the classroom teachers just hand us his scripts and say "that's literature"
just...imagine it's 2450 A.D. and English Lit students are regularly going into 100k debt writing postdoc theses on The Simpsons screenplays. the original animation hasn't even been preserved, it's literally just scripts and the occasional SDH subtitles.txt. they've been republished more times than the Bible

can't stop thinking about tamsyn muir's choice to present her deep, morally and politically complex science fantasy world with a central web of magic, secrets and lies reaching back ten thousand years through the eyes of three characters who:
1. tune out and start thinking about hot women whenever the magic system or worldbuilding are being explained
2. experience hallucinations on a daily basis, have brain damage and are being deceived and misled by their peers, authority figures, themselves and God
3. don't know who they are, have spent their entire life in one place and are, on all levels but physical, six months old

A co-worker of mine was standing outside with me during a break from customers to share a cigarette with me, and told me about how he had lost his brother that he was close with some years ago. He told me about how they used to be in a band together with some friends, and how ever since he'd died, he hadn't played any music because he'd been too scared and anxious. I told him about how I'd lost my brother to suicide some years ago.
I went home and pulled out an old tiny wooden box my brother had given me before he'd died. I'd been using it to store guitar picks I'd collected over the years, including one guitar pick that used to be his. I haven't played the guitar since he'd died, my hands are too small to play some of the chords, so I play bass and piano instead.
I went to work the next day and gifted my brothers old guitar pick to my co-worker. I told him that it'd been sitting in a box for ten years unused, and would probably sit there for longer if I kept it there. Told him that I thought he deserved to have it, because I bet he could put it to better use than I ever would. Told him I didn't feel like it was coincidence that me and him would cross paths with each other in our lives, and that it seemed suiting that we had these similar experiences but split in two halves. That somehow, I felt like he was meant to have the guitar pick. I told him that I knew he'd not played guitar since his brother died, but that if he ever decided to play again one of these days, maybe he'd be able to honor both of our brothers by using that guitar pick.
He almost cried. He thanked me. Then he went home that night and for the first time in years he played the guitar.
I don't know what the meaning of life is or what my purpose is, but I do believe that love and human connection is one of the most important things in life. It's finding ways to tell strangers you love them and share experiences with others. I think it's all just about love.

btw. your search for the most morally upright and ethical piece of media that has the most correct “representation” will destroy your ability to find the most profound and beautiful and human of stories. and may even destroy the stories themselves before they are created. if you even care.

Jason ends up in a fight in some town called Amity Park. He's partnering up with the local hero called Phantom.
It's against some ghost called Skulker, and he and Phantom are hiding behind a building while they regroup and take a moment to catch their metaphorical breath.
"I don't see any civvies around. You?" Phantom whispers, head invisible as he looks around the corner.
"Guess it's just us dead tonight," Jason deadpans (hah), loading his gun and checking to make sure there's no damages that would impact his ability to fire it accurately.
Suddenly Phantom is there, looking intense and serious in a way he never was in that fight, glowing eyes staring through Jason.
Taking him in.
"No," Phantom sighs, leaning away from a very spooked Jason and going back to fiddling with a thermos. "You aren't dead. You're alive, undeniably and in a way most people aren't."
Before Jason can ask what the fuck that's supposed to mean, a laser blast almost catches him in the leg.
He shelved it; both his questions and the weird fuzzy feeling that felt like relief at someone else telling him he was alive.
It felt like a weird vindication, but he never got that feeling when anyone else tried to tell him he was alive.
He'd parse it later; there was an ass to kick.

Experiment Story Introduction
All Jonas wanted to do was to change the narrative. People expected certain things of him because of family, his upbringing, his friends; expected them even he had worked hard to achieve goals nobody ascribed to him but himself. Jonas still wanted more, though. He wanted to break the vicious cycle of expectation, to do things that “people like” him never got the chance to. A bad day is all it takes for him to wonder about if the change is even worth it; and a chance encounter makes him wonder if some mistakes aren’t just destined to be repeated.
Ambition was one of those things Zinnia had always been told was a very masculine trait. Not by those closest to her, who saw her big dreams and determination as positive traits, but by others. Luckily, Zinnia ignored the words of others, knew that her hard work would pay off and their opinions on everything didn’t matter in the slightest. A chance meeting, an accident that she could never had planned for, and soon Zinnia begins to realise that there might just be more to life than the routines she’d so rigidly followed.
When Ronan got offered his dream job, he couldn’t quite believe it. Things in his life were looking up, and he was excited for what exactly the future might just hold for him. So he wasn’t exactly where he wanted to be just yet, but he was in the right place, and that was a better start than it could have been. However, sometimes it’s true that you shouldn’t meet your heroes, and soon Ronan is faced with a moral dilemma. One that might just ruin his chances of truly following his dreams.

Ronan rested his head gently against the back of his seat and finally allowed his eyelids to drag themselves shut. He’d always expected work to be exhausting, for it to take a mental toll on him because of how much thought went into everything. But he’d never expected it to be due to the moral dilemmas he was currently navigating.
Now, however, wasn’t the time to sleep. He couldn’t. Not yet. There was so much he still needed to do. So much that was all an attempt to try at least start making amends for the part he’d played in everything, no matter how unwittingly he’d done it.
‘Ro, babe, are you asleep?’ Layton’s soft voice drew Ronan to attention in an instant.
‘Not any more,’ he joked, but the concern behind his boyfriend’s eyes was enough for him to temper the small smile he’d tried to force onto his face. ‘I can’t.’
‘The blame doesn’t fall at your doorstep, you know,’ Layton said, leaning against the table so he could face Ronan. ‘It wasn’t –’
‘It was my fault, Layton,’ he said heavily, feeling the weight of those words in his chest.
‘You didn’t know,’ Layton assured him gently, moving to cup Ronan’s cheek.
Despite everything, Ronan shifted a little out of reach. Guilt gnawed away at his insides; guilt that he couldn’t allow himself to ignore.
Layton heaved a sigh, leant away from him once more. There was a flash of hurt behind his eyes, but Ronan knew it was because the words didn’t seem to be hitting home, rather than the fact he’d moved.
‘Just five minutes,’ Layton said, beseechingly. ‘And then we can see what else we can do.’
Ronan wanted to argue, wanted to note that he couldn’t rest while there was so much he could be doing. And yet the words stuck in his throat. Rest was important; and perhaps, if Layton was willing to help him work things out, it might just be that little bit easier to deal with afterwards.

enough stories about how someone learns to truely be happy through love. i want a story where someone is desperately seeking out love thinking it's the only way to be happy only for them to learn by the end that happiness is what they make of it and they don't need love at all to make it.
