Headcanons: Avian Ainur

AN: As some of you may know, my friends and I've been having some fun with giving our favorite bird Ainur avian traits, so I figured it's about time I compile my headcanons. Links down below. Enjoy!

𓆰 Quick introduction: The term "avian Ainur" includes Manwë, Eönwë and any other Ainur who are closely associated with birds/exhibit bird-like traits (so you could also think about Aiwendil for example; and as always go wild with headcanons and OCs if you want ♡)

𓆰 Just like some bird species mate for life - as well as Ainur in general - so do avian Ainur. Their mates/SOs/spouses are very important to them.

𓆰 While most of them are usually gregarious, they may become withdrawn and develop territorial aggression while courting someone and/or when they're getting ready to/about to mate. During these times, they can be seen either completely fixated on their mate and trying to be around them at all times or perching somewhere to survey their territory.

𓆰 Courtship begins - ideally - once they fall in love. If permission to court their lover is needed, most of them respect that and ask first.

𓆰 The customs around courtship and the activities it entails are important to avian Ainur especially, in contrast to some of their peers who prefer to go about it in more spontaneous or pragmatic ways.

𓆰 Courtship behavior usually includes showing off their pretty wings and flying skills via aerial exhibitions, as well as flying together with their future mate if requested and especially if the person in question is an Ainu (or otherwise capable of shapeshifting into bird form) too.

𓆰 Additionally, avian Ainur like dancing for and with their future mates, which is usually accompanied by a warm, fluffy wing hug.

𓆰 As with all the Ainur, singing is also an important part of courtship. Especially those who are shy and don't consider themselves gifted with words like to express their feelings via song. Those studying poetry alongside Manwë like to incorporate this as well.

𓆰 Once a relationship has been established, avian Ainur take great pride in providing for their mate. This includes singing for them, feeding them (especially if they aren't an Ainu as well and therefore need to eat), preening, physical affection and "building a nest" - which more often than not entails everything between acquiring a lovely house and building pillow forts on beds and couches, not building a traditional bird nest.

𓆰 They're very protective and can be rather jealous, especially during mating season. Should someone else try to hurt or woo their mate, even the ones of gentler nature are ready to fight.

𓆰 Whether mating season happens and when depends on hormones (if wearing a fána), the environment and the bird species used for inspiration. Typically avian Ainur experience occasional heats either after they bond with their mate or due to prolonged periods of loneliness and need for closeness.

𓆰 During heat/mating season their sex drive is quite high and repeated coupling (as in up to several times a day) typically occurs - if no mate or any kind of partner is available, they become very needy and stressed.

𓆰 Due to their Ainurin nature, conception is not necessary/not always the goal of mating, but couples may choose to do so.

Quarters of King's Landing

Vast swathes of empty land outside of King's Landing were separated and converted into Quarters. Each Quarter is set aside for lords, ladies, and anyone from a particular kingdom within Westeros. A sheriff is appointed to each Quarter, to maintain law and order. These Quarters came into being after the conquest, with the Dornish Quarter being the last of them. They do not just serve as a place of residence for those wanting to spend time in the Crown Lands. They are also places where one could find specialties from each region.

The Northern Quarter: Lumber, furs and pelts, fine wool and yarn, cured salmon and salt-cured sturgeon roe, true green and blue dyes obtained from winter roses and their leaves, and a rare, costly perfume that can only be made from winter roses are the most sought after goods. Some of the best hunters and trackers can be found in the Northern Quarter, along with some of the best boxers and wrestlers. Their seers are revered, and people from all over come to them for guidance on future decisions. Festivals sacred to the Old Gods are celebrated here.

The Vale Quarter: Weapons and armor. Some of the best plate and swords and mail can be found here, along with the best war horses. The best place to look for a master-at-arms would be in the Vale Quarter. Some of the finest sculptors for marble and stone can be found here. Equestrian events are the order of the day in the Vale Quarter.

The Stormlands Quarter: Some of the best shipwrights, boatbuilders, and sailors can be found here. There is even a hall for their fighters to put on boxing matches. Fighters from all over Westeros and beyond come to compete and wagers have reached record-breaking numbers in some instances.

The Dornish Quarter: Dates, Camels, and Sand Steeds can be found here, along with the finest linen and cotton, and lightweight hauberks suited for exceedingly hot weather. True red dye, one obtained from tiny insects that live only in Dorne, is sold in the Dornish quarter. A racing track can be found here, for horse and camel races.

The Reach Quarter: All manner of perfumes and oils, rare vintages and the finest silk. Their shipwrights are as good as those found in the Stormlands Quarter. Books of all kinds can be found here. Whenever the weather is fine, there are poetry and storytelling evenings.

The Westerlands Quarter: The best smiths and jewelers and glassmakers from in and around Lannisport come here. Gold and silver and platinum jewelry can be found here, as is beautiful hand-blown glass. Here one can find acrobats and ribbon dancers and tightrope walkers performing if the weather is clear.

The Riverlands Quarter: The best boatmakers and archers. Trackers from the Riverlands Quarter are as good as those found in the Northern Quarter. The nobles in this Quarter organize boat races along the Black Water Rush during late spring and summer.

The Iron Islands Quarter: Whale meat and whale oil can be found here, as well as shipwrights, sailors and whalers looking to ply their trade. Finger dancers and fire dances are held here and attract quite a crowd.

Doesn't know what to do here, but as an Experienced Vigilante:tm: he takes note of all the INexperienced vigilante's causing more danger than they realize.

Danny takes it upon himself to act as a low level villain so he can secretly train these vigilante's to be stronger. One day, a Bigger Villain decides to Fuck Around and Find Out.

All his "enemies" realize Danny could've folded them anytime he wanted when he effortlessly defeats the Big Bad.

For me, it's the perfect continuation of their story, and the most unhinged plot twist you could find in a fic.

This fic is half of my soul, or what the poets say. It's so much better as an ending than what they've given us. At least this is filled with such golden love it makes you ache. At least this makes sense.

3. from hearth and ashes, we’re reborn by @remuscariad. [G] [5K] [canon era magic reveal].

This fic is so good you'll be on your knees from it. The prose, the characterization, the tropes used... it will linger in your mind and fester there from how beautiful it all is. And the art in it by @onepeppercorn... stunning.

4. Our broken pieces by @aramblingjay. [T] [10K] [canon era established relationship]

You can pry this fic from my cold dead hands. I will never stop recommending it until it gets the fame it deserves. One of the most beautiful fics ever written about them, and genuinely encompasses their characters so perfectly.

5. gentle as an early spring breeze by @prattery. [G] [2.5K] [canon divergence golden age]

They are alive and in love and we're all living in this fic because it's what they righteously deserved. The way their life was written here and the love between them... I swear this author could write anything and I'd kudos it before even reading it.

Ever so softly rubbing a thumb over your skin and daring to imagine how it would feel without his gloves. When you pass the puddle, or reach the end of the stairs, or arrive at the storage room, Barbatos just smiles and doesn't let go.

So you know how it's canon that Will listens to true crime podcasts?

What if that's how he finds out that Nico is from the 1940s?!

Like he's listening to the latest episode about 'the death of Maria di Angelo and the disappearance and supposed kidnapping of her missing children, Niccolò and Bianca di Angelo'.

And it's not all that strange for demigods to pop up in conspiracy blogs or podcasts - Percy had a four part series about him, and Will listened to the whole thing during a nightshift at the infirmary.

So yeah, Will starts listens to the di Angelo episode thinking nothing of it, maybe he's just hoping to have a laugh about what the mortals thought happened to Nico or maybe he's more than a little curious about Nico's mysterious past.

And the hosts, in crackling stereo voices because they desperately need a better mic, are talking about lightning striking the hotel, how "the storm popped up out of nowhere" and the "strange seismic activity reported in the area at the time"...and then the date drops...

The hosts say something along the lines of, "The di Angelo siblings were reported missing by their family back in Italy after no word had been received of their safe passage to America. The police report states they were last seen by an anonymous witness entering the Lotus Hotel & Casino with an unknown third party in December of 1942."

And Will's just sat there, gaping at the infirmary bed he'd been stripping of its sheets. Because everything is adding up now, and Will's not quite sure how he missed it...
