Seventeen’s Love Languages
Acts of Service
Scoups: probably the type to do the dishes every time. If you cook, he’ll do the dishes. If you’re cleaning, he’ll do laundry. The type to also run errands for you if you find that stuff boring/tiring. Y’all’s going to divide-and-rule this chores game.
Jeonghan: maybe the kind to pay for things without really making it obvious. Acts of service doesn’t have a standard definition (like everything else) for this man. And then one day you’d wonder “oh yeah I don’t recall the last time I filled gas in the car”. Same goes for things around the house.
Joshua: the kind to do things you didn’t realise were due, like figure out insurance stuff or change your car batteries or maybe even restock supplies. He’ll pick up on things you might have missed so you don’t have to bother later.
Jun: seems like the type to notice little things that need attention/fixing, like tidying up cables, fixing a creaking cupboard door, and will do all the heavy lifting without ever being asked.
Hoshi: he might work better with instruction; you tell him to do something and he’ll do it every day thereafter. Would like nothing more than watering plants as you talk about your day, or fold laundry when you guys are watching tv.
Wonwoo: I think he’s a “do taxes before they’re due” kinda person, and would do stuff that you might find tedious. Might be tidying around the house as a habit so you don’t even really realise it, but it comes naturally to him.
Woozi: puts you on a phone plan so you never pay phone bills. I’d say same goes for gym memberships, grocery discount cards, online shopping accounts, etc. that you might not have ever bothered with because it was already done before you knew it.
Dokyeom: he may do little things but is consistent. He’d remember doctor’s appointments, recycling days, etc. and do his bit to help. The type to brew you coffee every morning.
Mingyu: literally everything you need done on that day. Cooking, cleaning, laundry, taking out the trash, groceries, honestly that’s the day you do nothing at all and everything’s taken care of.
The8: perhaps the type to remind you to go for health check ups and pick up the right vitamins/ supplements for you. He’ll do things you don’t have the time for, including organising, tidying and will do that when he sends you off on a spa appointment.
Seungkwan: Will likely enrol in a Pilates class with you and make sure your time off from work is spent on yourself. If you have a hobby or play a sport, he’ll always remember little things like buying you new equipment or tools. Probably into organising and labelling stuff.
Vernon: always remembers your takeout order, whether it’s coffee or your favourite pizza joint. Will never skip your weekend routines and make sure everything’s in place for movie night or barbecue Sunday, so you can relax until Monday comes again.
Dino: probably drives you around a lot whenever you need to go somewhere. Always remembers your work timings and calls you when you’re late. Will pick you up on late nights and drive you on groggy mornings.

ZERO DAY/CALDRE HCS
•Andre fell for Cal pretty quickly. It was a mix of Cals ‘pretty blonde boy’ looks, Andre being a loner with no real friends beforehand, and Cal just getting him in a way no one ever really has before.
•Andre introduced Cal to more heavy music. Andre likes industrial metal while Cal had only really liked grunge before. Cal also shows Andre some grunge songs. They’ll make playlists for each other every now and then.
•Cals really good at making bracelets (real ones or just those kid friendship type bracelets). He’s made countless ones for Andre. (Andre mostly wears the first one Cal ever gave him)
Andre has tried making them too but once he even gets slightly frustrated, he gives up and just tosses it into Cals lap to finish for him.
•Kinda related to prev point, Cal likes doing DIY clothes/jewelry stuff in general. It gives him something to focus on other than wanting to die all the time 💀 One of his favorite things he’s made is a bracelet made out of the tabs off of Monster Energy cans. (Andre is honestly jealous he doesn’t have one.)
•Andre had a skateboarding phase. He kinda gave up on it halfway thru the ZD plans but he did try to teach Cal how to skateboard. (No it wasn’t a excuse to touch him while trying help him steady himself on the board.. okay fr it wasn’t. Cal just wanted to try it out since he saw Andre owned a few skateboards)
Cal is a bit of a giggler so he couldn’t take Andre too seriously when he was trying to give him actually helpful advice on how to skateboard.
•If Andre was in a particularly good mood while driving, he’d sing along loudly to whatever was playing on the radio. Cal would just shake his head with a smile.
•Cal tossed around the idea of working at hot topic for a while but for some reason or another, never applied. Andres secretly disappointed bc he would have liked if Cal had a employees discount.
•When Cals really bored & just feeling ‘off’, he’ll cut different shapes and stuff on himself. He’s done stuff like hearts & a butterfly. He’ll also do words or letters like ZD, A (for Andre :P), and because he’s a Manson fan.. I think he did Marilyn Mansons MM logo at least once. What a emo /j
•Both of them like thriller & horror movies but when it comes to TV shows they are a bit different. Andre likes stuff like Ghost Hunters & shows where they try to find Bigfoot (bc hes a very imaginative guy 💀) while Cal likes game shows where he can yell out answers & go on about how the contestants are stupid with Andre. He’s also kinda interested in cooking shows which Andre hates since they’re ‘too boring’.
•Neither of them are huge readers really but if they find a book or magazine that’s interesting, they’ll let the other borrow it.
•Andre steals knives & blades out of Cals room when he’s not looking but Cal never says anything. They both know Cal will just find a way to cut somehow but Andre still does it anyways (and since Andre will ultimately do whatever Cal wants at the end of the day, If cal asks for one of his knives back enough, Andre will give it back)
•Andre is sooooo the type to punch walls. He won’t do it at home really since he doesn’t want his parents worrying about him so it leads him to like.. punching brick walls outside which is much worse for his knuckles lol. But of course Cals there to bandage it up later.
•Cal is diagnosed with a few different things but won’t really bring it up unless it really needs to be. Andre knows all of his diagnoses tho and Cal will joke that Andre has the same things (depression, autism, adhd, etc) Andre will joke that he’s perfectly fine.
•Andre kept a good amount of his toy action figures from his childhood. They are in a box in his closet.
•Cals a bit of creep because sometimes at sleepovers, he just stares at Andre sleeping. He does it without even anything going on in his mind. He’s just enamored by him. Andre has caught him doing it a few times and just groans and rolls over or tosses a pillow at Cals face

Shower Thoughts
Abigail is a shower girl, singing her favorite punk rock songs slightly off key. Switches up her hair dye every other month. Otherwise, a pretty simple routine. Has mastered the perfect cat eyeliner and a little mascara.
Alex is a soak after a long, arduous workout, and drowns himself in Old Spice products. Uses an exotic scented shampoo - guava.
Elliott is a long bath kind of guy, complete with candles and rose petals, and a writing tray to capture his thoughts. Spends hours on his hair, nails, skin, etc. Immaculate self-grooming habits.
Emily has a whole wind down routine, complete with warm shower, meditation to find her Zen, and lofi sounds to lull her to sleep. Quick shower before work in the morning, fluff drys her hair. It's just that perky.
Harvey is particular about his grooming routine. Cleanliness is next to godliness. He's a shower-to-wake-up-in-the-morning kind-of guy and a shower-to-wind-down-at-night kind-of guy. Frequently shaves and grooms. Doesn't wear cologne so not to disturb his patients with allergies.
Haley spends hours in the bathroom, primping, curling, mani-pedi touch ups, fogging up the mirror with steamy hot showers. Heavy on the perfume. Light floral scents. Flawless makeup.
Sam is a quick cold shower in the morning kind-of dude. Whatever's on sale for cologne and deodorant. Showers daily and uses hair gel. Would totally play with Vincent's rubber ducky if he takes a bath.
Maru is a Navy shower kind-of gal. Freaky fast. She has better things to do with her time. Light sunscreen and a little lip gloss.
Sebastian takes longer than his sister. Rolls out of bed half awake and stands in the shower for a few minutes to be more alert. Thinks about weird stuff in the shower. Like the Reddit argument he had over how to pronounce GIF. The best ingredients for sushi. The weird dream he had last night about the Wizard, a clown, and a ghost dog walking into a bar...
Leah would skinny dip in the lake. Fresh water. Moonlight. Liberating. Not that she does it too often. Otherwise it's a short shower. Turns the shower off when soaping up to save water. Has the same hairstyle since middle school. Lip gloss, brush of dewy foundation, mascara, a little light earthy toned eyeshadow. There. Ready.
Shane avoids it as long as possible. Heavy heavy heavy on the Axe. Does the whole scruff thing. It works for him.
Claire falls asleep in the bath, with a glass of wine, reading a book. Wakes up in cold water realizing she needs to evaluate her life. Buys cheap cosmetics with her employee discount.
Victor is clean shaven... always. He's a normal shower guy, uses aftershave, a little citrus cologne. Sends out his dry cleaning.
Olivia is a luxurious bath lady. Loofah, bubbles, champagne, candles, facial, classical, sit back and soak... ahhhhh! Victoria's Secret perfume. Something strong and vanilla. She's got her makeup routine down pat. Red lipstick is her signature. Looks like a different person when she doesn't wear any makeup.
Penny is sad the plumbing doesn't work half the time in the trailer. She enjoys long soaks in the spa, sweating out her toxins, listening to nothing but the water when showering in the locker room. It's a nice change over her mom yelling at the game on TV.
Lance likes his spiked hair. Lots of mousse and gel to get it perfect. He's a shower-under waterfalls-bathe-in-the-ocean type of gent. Uses a sea salt scrub. Rugged deep woods scented cologne.
Magnus - why shower when you can just use a cleaning spell? Such a time saver! But if he must, he will set up his tub in the woods and soak under the stars.
Sophia - has a grape chapstick she loves, special orders her pink hair dye, washes her feet nightly, showers every other day, no look is complete without her cotton candy blush.

Perfect Pumpkins
Tumblr media
Pairing: Eddie Munson/ Reader
Requested By: NA
Word Count: 2,934
Summary: Just another fluffy little fic about going to a pumpkin patch with Eddie.
Eddie Munson Masterlist
Stranger Things Masterlist
~~~~~
"It'll be so fun!" You all but whined from where you sat on the kitchen counter.
"Being cold and hunting for the prettiest vegetable is fun for you?" Eddie asked.
"Pumpkins are fruits."
He was quiet, only the sounds of running water as he rinsed a dinner plate in the sink. The water stopped and a comfortable silence fell over you. He picked up a dishrag from beside the sink and dried his hands. He turned to you, taking a step closer to stand between your parted knees.
You reached forward, your hands coming to rest atop his shoulders. He wrapped his hands around your back, linking his fingers behind you. You, in turn, crossed your ankles around his waist. He smiled as pulled him closer.
"Please?" You asked sweetly, blinking up at him through heavy lashes.
He rolled his eyes dramatically, his head falling to the side. "Have I ever said no to you?" He asked.
"You-"
"We're not getting a snake." He said sternly. His lips were suddenly on your cheek for just a moment before you felt them on the shell of your ear. "But we can get a pumpkin."
The next morning was an early start for you. You left Eddie curled up in bed, blanket clutched to his bare chest as he snored. He always woke up late when he could. When work or other obligations didn't require an early rise, Eddie Munson would sleep as long as you would let him.
So you decided to go about your normal weekend morning routine. The warm water of your shower bordered on too hot as you allowed the small bathroom to fill with steam. You hummed to yourself as you rinsed the discount soap from your body, your voice mingling with the loud rushing water around you.
When you walked into the bedroom you shared with Eddie you saw that he was still peacefully sleeping. He'd rolled over, no longer facing your side of the bed like he'd been when you left him. He was now on his opposite side, hair a mess around his head and your blanket pushed down to his hips. He was sweet like this, you thought. Calm and content in your bed. You chose an outfit for the day, simple jeans and a dark grey sweater over an old tshirt. After quickly dressing you stepped next to the bed, crouching beside your sleeping boyfriend. You placed a quick kiss to his temple, letting your lips linger for just a moment before pulling away. He stirred just slightly, his mouth closing as he dug his face deeper into his pillow.
The kitchen and living room needed tidying. A long week for both of you had led to clutter on most of the flat surfaces in your home. So you picked up your walkman from beside the couch and set to work.
By the time you finished cleaning up in the living room you'd flipped the tape in your walkman twice. You were so focused on your current task, wiping dust from the top of the TV, that you didn't notice Eddie in the living room with you.
"Oh, fuck!" You gasped as you turned around, hand flying to your chest.
"Gimme a minute, sweetheart, I just woke up." He giggled from his spot perched on the arm of the couch, one bare foot on the cushion while the other rested on the floor. He held a steaming coffee mug in one hand, holding his free hand out to you. You set your walkman and headphones on top of the TV before taking the few steps towards him.
He wrapped his arm around your ribs and nuzzled his nose into your chest. You pulled him closer, one arm around his shoulders, the fingers of your other hand tangling into his messy curls. You pressed a kiss to the crown of his head, inhaling his scent.
"Morning," you muttered into his hair.
"Still wanna go pumpkin huntin'?" He asked, his voice muffled by your sweater. You nodded into his hair, your nose mussing his hair slightly. "Give me… this much time." He said, holding up his coffee mug, his face still buried in the soft fabric of your sweater.
You pulled away from him, freeing your hand from his hair. Taking the mug from him, you brought it to your lips. It was still hot as it hit your tongue. "How's about this much time?" You asked him, handing the mug back to him as you swallowed the stolen drink, too much sugar as usual.
"I'll make it work," he answered with a smile. He leaned forward, lips pursed. You granted him the kiss he wanted, his lips soft against yours.
You took a break from cleaning and curled up beside Eddie on the couch. He kept one arm over your shoulders, the other hand alternating between a cigarette and his coffee. His own morning ritual. You loved mornings like this with him. Neither of you rushing around for work, no time crunch. Just soft murmurs about plans for the day, Eddie's bare chest beneath your cheek.
It was early afternoon before you left for the pumpkin patch. Merrill's farm was large, sitting just outside city limits and surrounded by woods. It was your favorite place to spend an autumn day. You had your window down as Eddie drove to Merrill's. Your hand was extended out the window, floating over the wind. Something about autumn brought out the child in you.
As Eddie pulled onto a dirt road that led to a gravel parking lot you felt your excitement grow. You watched as parents unloaded toddlers from back seats. An older couple walked hand in hand towards the pumpkins. You couldn't help but wonder if you and Eddie would be like that someday.
You hopped down from the passenger seat of the van, unable to contain the grin that was written across your face. You walked around the front of the van to meet Eddie as he closed his door behind him. He leaned his head back with a smile, looking arrogant as you bounced closer to him. You took his hand in yours, squeezing lightly as you reached across your chest to grab his forearm, your fingers wrapping around the sleeve of his jacket just below his elbow. Your eyes fell closed as you felt him press his face into the top of your head.
"Let's go find you the best pumpkin in town, sweetheart." He mumbled. You felt like a kid as you looked up at him, eyes wide and hopeful. He smiled down to you, brown eyes sparkling beneath the early autumn sun.
You led him by the hand towards the rows of pumpkins. The pumpkin field was just over an acre big. It was full of rows and rows of pumpkins of all sizes still on their vines. The ground was rough and uneven beneath your feet as you began to walk along the rows inspecting the pumpkins. Each one that you thought was perfect ended up having something wrong with it upon closer look.
You were beginning to get discouraged as you rounded the third row. Eddie noticed, grabbing your hand and pulling you to an abrupt stop. He turned you to face him and let his free hand fall to your waist. "What's up?" He asked quietly, dipping his head so that his face was closer to yours.
"They're all ugly," you sighed.
"We, like, just started looking," he answered, tapping the toe of his shoe to a pumpkin near you. You sighed, crossing your arms over your chest. He moved his hand from your waist to wrap around your back. His other hand joined quickly and he pulled you closer to himself. "You wanna pout or do you wanna find the best fuckin' pumpkin Merrill ever grew?" He asked quietly, his tone mockingly sweet.
"Can't I do both?"
"I'm gonna leave you here," he teased, though his smile gave him away.
"You wouldn't," you smiled back at him.
"Wanna bet?"
You leaned into him, trapping your crossed arms between your chest and his. You smiled into the kiss as his soft lips met yours. He tasted like coffee and cigarettes. You breathed in the light aroma of Old Spice that lingered around him. A gentle breeze blew around you, kicking up fallen leaves around your feet.
Eddie's hands trailed from the small of your back to your sides. His palms stopped, large and heavy, just above your waist. You felt his fingers press into the thick cotton of your sweater as he spoke, "Gonna have to do a lot better than that if you don't wanna get left here."
"We both know I can do better than that," you winked. You pulled away from him suddenly, taking two steps back as you put space between the two of you. His hands fell to his sides as you turned away from him to continue down the row of pumpkins. Eddie tailed behind you, smirking to himself as he watched you scan each pumpkin.
There was a part of him that wanted to complain. But he didn't, of course he didn't. Maybe he was a bit chilly, but he didn't mind. He liked being here with you. He liked watching how your lips pursed and your brows tightened when you bent over to get a closer look. He'd told you once, a few years ago, that looking at you was the best view he'd ever seen. He meant it then just as much as he means it now.
He was startled back to the present with your excited gasp. "Baby!" You sighed, planting one knee into the dirt as you held a pumpkin in your hands. "This one is perfect."
"Perfect, huh?" He asked, crouching beside you.
"Perfect," you agreed. Your smile grew as you ran your hands over the sides.
He pulled a pocket knife from his jacket pocket. It was an old, beat up thing he'd stolen from Wayne when he was in high school. He swore it added to his "scary" look, even though nobody outside of Hellfire ever saw it. The blade had needed a good sharpening then, and it only got more and more dull over time. But he figured it would do the trick as he flipped the blade open with a flick of his wrist.
It took a few sawing motions but Eddie did eventually free the perfect pumpkin from its vine. You picked it up, balancing it against your stomach as you turned it over in your hands. It was beautiful. The perfect shade of orange, smooth and even all the way around. You smiled to yourself as you imagined what kind of jack-o'-lantern you'd carve into it when you got home.
"You've got your pumpkin, pumpkin," he said with a wink, slinging an arm over your shoulders. "Ready for lunch?"
"We need to get you one, now."
"I don't need a pumpkin," he answered.
"Oh, yes, you do." You corrected him sternly as you pressed your pumpkin into his stomach.
He removed his hand from around you and took the pumpkin from you. He held it almost effortlessly in his hands as he followed behind you, once again looking over the pumpkins at your feet.
"And why, my love, do I need a pumpkin?"
"We can't put just one pumpkin on the porch," you answered, rolling your eyes as if it were obvious. "If there's only one pumpkin, some lonely woman might assume you're single and try to steal you from me in the dead of the night."
"The dead of the night?" He asked, giggling as you bent down to inspect one closer. You decided it wouldn't do and stood back up straight before resuming your walk down the rows. You hummed a simple affirmation to him. "Well, we can't have that. Now, can we?"
"Definitely not," you answered. "So we need to find you a pumpkin."
"As you wish, sweetheart."
You walked up and down a few more rows, Eddie and your perfect pumpkin following close behind you. You actually missed the second perfect pumpkin. Eddie was the one who spotted it. He stopped suddenly, digging the toe of his shoe into the dirt in front of the pumpkin. He set yours down beside it as he crouched to get a closer look.
"Hold up," he called over his shoulder. He wrapped his hands around the pumpkin, turning it as he looked at all sides of it. "Think I found my pumpkin." He glanced up to you as you came to stand beside him, offering for you to give it a once over for your final approval. You trusted his judgement, and told him so. And with that, he pulled his knife from his jacket once more and cut away at the vine.
"Good eye, baby," you praised him as you picked up your own pumpkin from the ground.
His smile was shy, almost hidden as he stood beside you with his pumpkin. It was a nice one. A lighter color orange than the one you'd chosen, bordering on yellow. And it was taller than yours, almost oblong. You wouldn't have chosen it for yourself. But Eddie liked it and he seemed happy with it, and that was all that mattered.
You walked towards the front of the property where a small farmhouse sat next to the road. One of Merrill's granddaughters was sat at a table with a closed cash box next to her open textbook that she was taking notes from. There was a row of pallets stacked on top of each other to her left. On top of each stack were different, smaller, autumnal decor. Mini pumpkins in orange and white, gourds, pumpkins covered in bumps, and finally jewel corn. But the table at the end, closest to the girl, was the one Eddie went for. Baked goods handmade by Merrill's wife.
"Can we set these here?" You asked the studying girl behind the table. She looked up at you and nodded sweetly before turning her attention back to her book.
You walked to the end of the row and began another hunt for the perfect pumpkins. Only this time, they were tiny. You ended up choosing 8 tiny pumpkins, mentally deciding where you'd put each of them once you got home. Your arm was full as you passed by the gourds to the jewel corn. You'd always loved jewel corn. The colors, both autumnal and not, drew you in like a moth to a flame. You tucked the husks of them between your fingers as you chose the most beautiful ones you could find.
Eddie, ever the sweet tooth, chose a loaf of pumpkin bread, cinnamon apple cookies, and cinnamon rolls from the table of baked goods. When he'd filled his large hands with enough sugar to give him a cavity he took his spot beside you.
"Ready?" He asked, eying your arm full of tiny pumpkins.
Your gaze was firm on a pumpkin in front of you. It was ugly. Well and truly ugly. It looked like it had been stomped on with its squashed and wrinkled shape. It was covered on one side with unsightly bumps and the other was blemished with a patch of green, like it had been picked too soon. You loved it. It was perfect.
Eddie smiled to himself when he saw the pumpkin you were looking at. Of course you'd want that one. The ugliest of the ugly pumpkins. You'd always had a soft spot for the misfits. He balanced his selection of desserts in one hand, easily picking up the ugly pumpkin with the other. You looked up at him with wide, happy eyes as he lifted the pumpkin from the table.
"Last one?" He asked as he brought the pumpkin up his chest.
"Last one," you agreed.
The girl at the table bagged your tiny pumpkins and jewel corn in old bags from various shops around town as Eddie dug his wallet from his back pocket. After paying he scooped up the two nice pumpkins, balancing them on his shoulders. You took the ugly pumpkin and the bags of desserts and other decorations, following him to the van. The gravel of the parking lot shifted beneath your feet loudly, but you were too focused on the pumpkin in your hands to notice. You unloaded everything into the back of the van, being careful to make sure the bags wouldn't topple over as Eddie drove home. He reached into the back and popped open the plastic box that held the cookies he'd chosen, handing one to you before taking one for himself.
"That woman is a magician, I swear," he sighed as he took a bite, walking to the front of the van. You took your seats and finished your treats, exchanging comments about how these were definitely the best cookies on earth.
Once you were home you immediately put your pumpkins on display on your front porch, the ugly one right in the middle. You stood beside Eddie, his arm slung lazily over your shoulders while you leaned into him admiring your little display.
"They look good," Eddie hummed. You smiled up to him. His cheeks were slightly pink with the chilly breeze that was sweeping around you. He bent forward and pressed his lips to your forehead, lingering just below your hairline for a moment. Even if you were cold, you couldn't help but think that this was what people meant when they talked about their happy place.
My least charitable view of this new 'supercorp' is DC wants to use it to muscle out the real one. I have an extremely hard time believing none of these people knew about this. No one googled supercorp? Please. This was a choice. And I hope it backfires on them. And it sucks just when I was getting excited about DC again after seeing Kara in the Flash movie (not discounting the various other issues with the star of the movie).
I have it on good authority to know that some people at DC are very much aware of what Supercorp is and the widespread passion for it. So this choice is… an interesting one.
Is it just this particular comic duo using it to their advantage hoping it boosts sales of their issue and DC simply shrugged and said “sure” and no more thought went into it nor the potential backlash? Very possible.
Is it some form of spite or deliberately trying to erase Supercorp as a queer ship and put any sort of a nail in the coffin for future canon Kara/Lena? Unlikely. For many reasons.
If you want to forever kill a ship, you kill the ship (see Karamel slaughtered in comics via incest AND the tv series via Mon-El gone forever AND in animated media via Mon-El as a villain). But they’ve not done that to SC. They’ve simply “borrowed” a ship name and logo concept…
But no one has come out and said Kara will always be straight, if anything DC has allowed multiple versions of Supergirl to dabble in sapphic moments, ships and heavy coding. And using the word “Supercorp” doesn’t erase Kara Zor-El + Lena Luthor as a duo nor their dynamic at all. If anything, that recent DC-approved, CW-tie in comic did quite a nod and a wink to Supercorp as a romantic possibility…
So there is hope for Kara/Lena in the future, IMO. Even IF right now, someone at the top perhaps doesn’t like the idea of Kara/Lena as romantic canon, and did approve this new SC name grab for some weirdly negative reason… it doesn’t mean much for the future. There is always a changing of the guard every few years, and comic books and characters go in a variety of directions all the time. So the real Supercorp could happen, and be made canon in a year, five years, or ten years. Or more. Nobody knows. But there is not a person on Earth with the power and longevity necessary to prevent it forever. So, hang in there, and keep fighting the good fight in strategic and passionate, but always positive ways. 🤟
Dear Sephiroth: (a letter to a fictional character, because why not) #66
Today's letter is maybe a little early, I know. But my mind is all abuzz with various things. In light of the realizations I've been having, it has occurred to me: though I am skilled at taking care of everyone in my general vicinity, I have no idea what taking care of myself really looks like, outside of a purely theoretical sense. And theory alone is difficult to follow through on.
So, whenever I try to imagine whatever it is that I might want and need at any given moment, my mind typically comes up with a big huge blank. If you asked me what I want right now, or what I need right now, I wouldn't be able to tell you. Most likely, I'd just stare at you, utterly baffled and looking stupid as I keep opening and closing my mouth, trying to come up with an answer and receiving only what effectively amounts to static noises and TV snow:
youtube
There are a lot of reasons for this. First of all, I've been trained to basically discount my own needs; saying that I'm hungry or thirsty or sleepy, for example, was a great way to get screamed at or smacked around in days past, so my mind has had to learn how to automatically ignore most sensations of discomfort that my body is trying to tell me, before I even consciously perceive that the discomfort is there. Especially if I'm focused on some task, I typically don't realize I'm hungry, thirsty, tired, or in pain until someone else tells me I'm being a crabbypants. My sense of interoception is very poor, and I'm not sure if that's the autism or the fact that I've had to learn from an early age to dissociate even from extreme stimuli.
Even for the pain from the rib injury, too; in an effort to protect itself from those who would get violent with me if I complained about pain or was slowed down from pain in any way (these people no longer exist in my life, and yet…), my mind automatically pushes the brunt of it out of my conscious perception (even though I no longer want it to do this; I'm working on it…), and what I'm left with is a sensation that's not… exactly pain as much as it is kind of a vague, dull, heavy cloud of general and poorly-defined unpleasantness that has settled itself into the upper right quadrant of my torso. And while this is an amazing skill to have (even if the price to get it was steep) because it allows me to mostly function through it, this also comes at a significant and ongoing energy cost; dissociation doesn't come cheap.
…So that's an obstacle between me and the whole "self-care" and "treating oneself gently" thing. Other obstacles include fun stuff like executive dysfunction (starting tasks is hard even if they're fun; stopping tasks is hard even if I hate them, and being reliably able to plan and prioritize multi-step tasks effectively is nothing but a distant fantasy for me) and impaired object permanence (this is why I forget that there are vegetables in the crisper drawer of the fridge until they start to smell weird). Then there's the rib injury itself, which limits my mobility and ability to do things in a given day, and the fact that my body does not tell me that I've done too much until it's too late (combination of dyspraxia and poor interoception), and then I gotta spend the next day paying for it.
Caffeine helps a little with the executive dysfunction, but it also makes me more prone to getting flashbacks, so I have to be very careful about how I use it. But I'm often not careful about how I use it, because I want to function. So by the end of all this, the general flow of my life looks kinda like this:
Tumblr media
…And it's only taken me like 12 years, but I'm FINALLY starting to actually realize that this is very much NOT sustainable. I'm a squishy mammal, not a machine. And I can't exactly be hanging out over here, imploring you to take care of yourself while I'm over here being kind of a dumpster fire, right? Something about rocks and glass houses. So something has to change. But I'm not exactly sure what yet.
On Tuesday, my therapist asked me to chew on the question of "What does taking care of a Lumine actually look like?" And so far, all I've come up with is a list of obstacles that stand in the way. But it's better than the nothing that I had previously, right? I can build from something that is not a nothing; I can work with that.
One of the things I think I need in order to not feel overwhelmed is "not clutter". But we are a neurodivergent house, and all three of us tend to set things down in weird places and then immediately forget that they exist. Today, in an attempt to try to remedy this, one of the things I came up with (don't laugh at me too hard for this) is to try to treat my house as though it's yours and we're just watching over it and waiting for you to come back home (silly, impossible, and ridiculous for a variety of reasons, I know; but hey, whatever keeps me motivated, right?).
I don't know how sustainable this will be in the long term (for a variety of obvious reasons), but I suppose the process of trying to learn how to keep myself motivated to tend to myself and my space properly will involve me making a lot of mistakes along the way to try to figure out what works and what doesn't. Better to start from shaky ground than from no ground at all, and to try to build a solid foundation from there.
Another thing I came up with is to try to be alert and mindful about myself in the same way that I am alert and mindful about the people I care about in my immediate vicinity. To be fair, this "alertness" and "mindfulness" comes about as a result of the hypervigilance that the C-PTSD leaves me with, but I wonder if I can learn to take a more wholesome approach to it, and then learn to turn that lens inward upon myself in a more merciful fashion than I have in the past. I don't really know what this will look like yet, but maybe I can start by setting an alarm to check in with myself at least once an hour.
I'm tired of it being the case that I either break myself from not doing enough for myself, or break myself from trying to do too much in one sitting. In service to the goal that is trying to build a routine that isn't unreasonable in light of my limitations, I'm going to try to set hard limits on how many things I do in a given day. So for example, maybe I'll wash 10 dishes. Maybe I'll fold 10 clothing items. Maybe I'll vacuum one room. And even if I can "technically" do more, maybe I'll just leave it at that, because doing any of these for any amount of time causes a lot of pain in the affected side of my body.
Up until now, I've swung wildly between "doing nothing" and "doing all of it at once", and… this doesn't work. So I think I might have to try to start small by building a very gentle routine (the ADHD despises routine, while the autism desperately craves the structure, so this is a fun dynamic to have to try to play with…) and adding to it as I grow accustomed and comfortable. I think it's time to work with my neurotype and physical composition instead of punishing myself for the fact that neither of these things exist in a way that's considered "normal".
I might ask my friends for ideas, too; when the task at hand is difficult, you're supposed to ask for help. Humans are social creatures (yes, even if developmental trauma can sometimes make people think like they're "born solitary"). Maybe they'll have some ideas about what I can do, and about what proper self-care ought to look like; it'll be educational. To be sure, I have no idea what I'm doing, and there's a lot that I don't know.
But I'm going to try to blaze the path forward anyway and write down what I learn along the way, so that when you decide you're ready, you won't have to start from scratch; I don't know what good any of this will do, but I would almost rather stop breathing permanently than see you get cut down again, so I have to try something. Anything. Even if it means I gotta do something I'm terrified of doing (like acting as though I'm worth my own effort and compassion) in order to model for you how it's done.
In the meantime, while I'm trying to figure all this stuff out, I've done a few things around the house and poured myself a lovely cup of the biscuit tea (I know I said before that it's unremarkable, but it's growing on me nonetheless). I'll share with you a few of today's highlights, just on the off-chance that any of it might give you even a small reason to smile today.
Here is the biscuit tea I made for myself, before and after stirring:
Here is some salmon, before and after steaming. It's important to get your omega-3s while trying to build new neural connections.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is some rice, before and after cooking. Remember the jar of rendered chicken juices from my 64th letter to you? That was used to make this rice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sliced fresh carrots, steamed as the rice cooked:
Tumblr media
Here's the balanced and wholesome meal that I made out of all this. I wish more than anything that I could hand you a bowl filled with these same contents.
Tumblr media
And here's a freshly-made bed! Bubbles, my giant lovely orca plush, is having a marvelous time chilling out on a bed that has THREE blankets on it!! I'm gonna be so warm and toasty when I go to sleep!! It's gonna be great!!
Tumblr media
You deserve all these things. You deserve a good tea, a wholesome, balanced, delicious meal, and a toasty, comfy bed all to yourself, where you can feel safe. Because all humans deserve these things; you're not an exception. So I'm gonna keep trying to help you. I'm gonna keep trying to call you back to yourself so you can build for yourself a life in which you can have this. I'm gonna keep trying because I love you in the same way that anyone loves a friend, and because there's lots of other people who love you, too.
We don't wanna see any more bad things happen to you, but really, only you have the power to make the kinds of choices that will lead you to peace and safety; all we can do is try to encourage you and cheer you on from here. I'll pray to every deity in my world that you might hear us and turn yourself around. So make good choices. Take care of yourself. Don't go so far away that the light of all the things that are beautiful and good cannot reach you. Sephiroth... please?
I'll write again tomorrow. I will always make the time to write to you, regardless of what I'm doing and no matter how tired I am. I'll always be right here.
Your friend, Lumine
Lex is starting to feel like herself again after the events on Bouvetoya Island... with a little help from a tall, dreadlocked knight in shining armor at her side! | Lex/Scar |
Lex managed to get herself up and out of bed by ten in the a.m., which was actually pretty impressive considering she hadn't gotten home from her tour until around two in the a.m. Right now, she was still living in her little cubby in the Adirondacks. It was a bit chilly, since it was still winter in upstate New York (and by a bit chilly, she meant cold as hell). Lex had always liked the cold, and Bouvetoya, whilst colder than anything she'd ever experienced (in more ways than one), had done nothing to diminish her love for the crisp air. She knew that her intergalactic friend from the stars wasn't very keen on the cold, and this fact made her realize even more that he indeed had a soft spot for her; she suspected he wouldn't willingly come to this icebox for just anyone.
After dressing, she unhurridly began making breakfast. She had the day off, and she planned on doing absolutely nothing. Recently, she had started taking steady work again, and it was such a relief to be back at her game again. She loved her job; loved the self-fulfillment of it, as well as showing other people the beauty of the world. Her tours were continuing in the mountains right now, and she had taken a big group on a long hike yesterday that had tired her out. It had also taken a lot of her night up, which she had expected. That was why today, she was going to park her sore butt on the couch, and kick back with some junk food and movies.
As she was eating her pancakes and bacon on the couch, flipping through tv channels, she found her mind wandering to her alien pal yet again. It was funny to think those of those two words in one sentance: alien pal. Who ever in a million years would've thought? Lex had never really been one to believe in any of that anyways. She hadn't discounted it entirely - she knew, being a partial scientist, that many things were indeed possible, and didn't always have explanations. Truthfully, she had just never really thought about humanoids existing from other galaxies. Life on other planets, sure. Like water, and plants, and organisms that had capability of movement. But a seven foot tall, scale covered dude with dreadlocks and a pension for violence? Hell no.
This had to be the farthest thing in the universe away from how she thought her life would turn out. And there was still more to come. Lex wondered, as she often did, what was awaiting her in the future. Would this relationship - friendship she had with this extraterrestrial continue? Would it escalate? Would he grow tired of her, and how very different she was from his race? Her brow furrowed at the thought; she didn't want to consider that.
A knocking sound came from her front door, and, mouth full, she turned her head towards it. Who would be visiting her at eleven a.m. on a Tuesday? Swallowing, she placed her plate on the couch cushion beside where she had been sitting, and rose to investigate. Pulling her sweater more tightly around her body, she crossed the short walk towards the entry to the house. Reaching one hand out, she peeked out the curtain, more of that bright sunlight streaming in through the window pane, making her squint to see who was at her door. A blonde woman, pretty face, waved excitedly back at her. Karen. Holy shit. Lex had completely forgotten that she had invited her friend over to her home that morning for coffee; she hadn't seen the woman in weeks, and Karen was finally back in the area after a brief vacation to the Bahamas.
Smiling back, Lex opened the heavy oak door and met her friend with open arms. "It's so good to see you! I'm so sorry, I totally forgot; I feel like the worst friend ever!"
Squeezing her tight, Karen didn't sound the least bit upset, a smile in her voice as she replied cheerily, "Oh, no worries, you've been busy as all hell! I'm just glad you're here - it's been way too long!"
Apologizing again for having pajama's on, Lex invited Karen into the warm house. She decided to make more pancakes and bacon for her friend to share, as well as turning on her coffee maker, while the two engaged in idle, pleasant chit-chat. Karen and Lex hadn't been as close as they normally had been lately. But to be fair, Lex had never really been close with anybody - she didn't have a best friend. And the friends that she did have, she grew even more distant from after everything had happened in Bouvetoya. She looked forward to talking with Karen more often; it was always refreshing to get together and just hang out with a friend, talk about life, recent experiences, etc.
There was one recent life experience, though, that Lex planned on keeping to herself. Karen probably wouldn't take too lightly Lex talking about aliens after knowing about her supposed 'unstable' mental state since the events on the frozen island. Though nobody else but herself knew that aliens were the cause of that misfortune, but she planned to keep everything to herself just the same. For her own safety, and for Scar's.
A little while later, Lex and Karen were sitting on her couch, coffee mugs in hand, talking about another one of their friends, Mariah, who had recently gotten engaged. Lex had been so disconnected from everything, that she hadn't even known Mariah had met someone. They were laughing about past dating experiences when there came a sudden thud from the roof. Lex, eyes wide, swallowed her coffee noisily in realization, and Karen jumped. "Oh, Jesus, Lex, that must scare the shit out of you every single time! That's the problem with living under the trees: once the snow comes crashing down, it sounds like an avalanche!" she giggled. Lex laughed with her, trying very hard to discern whether or not it was actually snow, or if it was something else. Someone else. For a few moments, there was no other noise besides Karen speaking, continuing their subject from before, and Lex was just about to relax when the scrabbling of feet (claws) on her roof made the hair on the back of her neck stand up.
Worst. Timing. Ever.
Lex had grown to really like Scar, but she had no idea how she was going to explain this one to Karen. Crap.
"Man, that stuff's really coming down!" Karen exclaimed, looking up at the ceiling, "Do you think my car's okay out there? It's under one of those giant pine trees,"
"Um, yeah, you know what? I'll go check on it." Lex stated, setting her coffee down on the table a little too forcefully, so some sloshed over the rim and onto her coffee table.
"Oh, I'll come wit-"
"Oh no, Karen, it's fine, really! It's cold out there, you stay in here where it's warm, I've got it, don't worry!" Lex said in a rush, practically running towards the door. Karen gave her a puzzled look before shrugging it off and sipping at her warm beverage.
Lex practically threw her coat around her shoulders, not even zipping it up before she was out the door, slamming both of them shut in her haste. She had closed them just in time, too, because as soon as she did, a huge creature that seemed to fall straight from the sky (or rather, her roof) landed heavily on two feet in the snow right in front of her porch. Straightening from his crouched position, Scar stood to his full height, chittering in greeting at her.
"Scar, hey buddy, um, listen -" She barely made it off the porch before she was swept up into those massive arms and squeezed against that brick wall of a chest in a giant bear hug. "Ow, Scar, can't breathe..." She patted him on the back in greeting as he set her down on her feet, holding a hand on her shoulder to steady her. Swaying as she gazed up at him, she once again tried to explain the situation to him. "Hey, can you come back in, like, two hours? I, um, someone who doesn't know about you is h-"
"Lex?" Came a faint voice from behind her, growing louder as a creak preceded the door opening, "Are you alright? I hear voices." Lex swung around towards her female friend, wondering how on earth she was going to explain the massive being in front of her. Well, this is going to be just great.
I just wanted to say: I love your art and especially your banner rn by talos! also your fic as well thank you for creating everything that you do for people, it’s awesome!
Second: what’s something that you’ve been chewing on lately, story wise? What character conflict, or plot point can you tell me about (that doesn’t spoil too much of course)? I wanna hear your thoughts about the characters you write and your head-cannons on them too! Just spit some word vomit at me!
Thank you!
My current banner art is actually a crop of the first paired piece I ever did to go with my Deathly Weapons fic.  (Specifically Chapter 11, which I still have a soft spot for since it’s one of earliest chapters that really let me lean into scratching the thing-I-haven’t-seen-too-often-in-fanfic itch.)
I recently got my hands on a discounted Wacom (my digital art process got tanked a few years ago when my poor art-compatible hybrid tablet-laptop was tragically taken from us by a cracked motherboard) so I’m looking forward to getting into a faster art workflow again and maybe putting some new pieces out more easily.  I’d like to do more comic art pieces for the Chapter 18 mission, and there’s a silly little concept drawing for the planned Mission 5 that might be new-blog-banner material if it turns out nicely.  We’ll have to see how that goes.
As for what I’ve been chewing on story-wise lately… I’ve sort of been all over the place.  I’m still on burnout recovery so I’ve been letting myself move non-sequentially, working on the bits my brain feels like focussing on rather than trying to force creativity where the juice isn’t flowing.   (One of the things about being my type of writing-nerd is that “self-indulgent” for me means a story with plenty of material to analyse, which is very fun as a reader but has created a lot of work for myself as the writer.  As mentioned in another post, I have a full-blown TV-show-style story-bible for this one.)
Recently, my authorial ping-pong-ing has been going into a fair bit of spoiler territory.  There are some chunks of the Act III endgame plan which are underdeveloped in the specifics of what the big-boss bad-guys’ plan is, whether I want to involve the Anti-Ecto Acts more, and the logistics of both the counter-strategy our heroes are planning to use and how to make its more action-heavy parts look cool in writing.  When I’m not doing that I’ve been focussing a lot on the upcoming Wally-centric chapters, which are a set I’ve been wanting to keep schtum about since there’s a small potential spoiler mixed in and I don’t want to risk giving the game up or pre-setting people’s expectations before they have a chance to blind read (even if a few people have already made some close guesses in the comments).  It puts me in a bit of an odd-spot right now because the chapters I’m drafting are an immediate spoiler, the later sections I’m working on are a major spoiler and there’s a good chance that a lot of the character stuff going on in the middle won’t make a whole lot of coherent sense without prior context because of how I like to layer foreshadowing/development.
That said, Wally-centric chapters mean Wally thoughts, and of those I have plenty to share:
First of all, I want to establish that I really do like Wally as a character.  The DW chapter set comprising Flashpoints through to Equilibrium is going to explore and develop some of his flaws and insecurities, which means he isn’t going to be looking his best, but it’s not meant to be a Ron The Death Eater situation.  He’s just a complex person, and taking him warts and all means sometimes you have to get up close and personal on the warts.
Something that I’m maybe a bit over-conscious of when reviewing my DW story notes is worrying about letting Wally slide into just being punching-bag joke-fodder.  Wally is quippy, irreverent, a little tactless and prone to being a bit of an impulsive goober who sometimes gets possessed by teenage boner-brain, which makes him easy to fall back on as a default source of incidental levity (whether cracking the joke or being the punchline).  Because I’m now writing an 8-character ensemble where most non-focal characters only get a few lines per conversation, it’s easy for characters to slide into being defined by their strongest surface level trait(s)… and something I worry about with Wally is that his availability as a source of jokes runs the risk of Flanderisation into a disposable Scrappy/ Flirty Comic Relief, which isn’t his character.  Wally is actually really important – not just for his scientific book-smarts but for his perceptiveness, earnestness and ability to function as one of the emotional barometers for the squad – so I always have it in the back of my mind to make sure I include enough moments that actually demonstrate those qualities and the other characters’ appreciation of them/ their friendship, so that it counterbalances the more light-hearted goofery.
I think he’s walking the same tightrope as Sokka from Avatar: the Last Airbender – yes, he tends to take the L more often than the others for comedy purposes and sometimes he gets stuck with supremely dumb side-plots for the sake of tonal balance, but to claim that it’s the entirety of his characterisation really misses the point by a wide mile.
On that note, I actually really like the decision YJ!Animated decided to go with in its first and only season (ahem) in giving Wally a normal and functional family background.  I know that’s not the typical background for his comics counterparts (and no shade on other fan-writers who want to write AUs exploring the abuse dynamic, those are really interesting stories) but I think it was a smart deviation for the purposes of a large ensemble, and offered a fair bit of potential for cast-balance.  It lets him serve an important role as the normal one – not only as an easy window into what the current lives of ordinary middle-class civilians look like (which is good because ordinary people are who our heroes are donning the masks to protect) but also as a touch-stone for the others, most of whom either come from different cultures or from very atypical backgrounds.  Even if we discount the Impure Atlantean with military training, the ostracised White Martian and the Half-Alien clone-weapon, the other members of this line-up are an orphaned circus acrobat adopted by a billionaire, a girl from a dangerously dysfunctional criminal household where she was forced to fight her sibling, and a fledgling sorceress raised by an overprotective single Dad.  The others might intellectually understand what a “normal” childhood and family look like but they don’t necessarily know it as intuitively and intimately as Wally does.  That normality gives Wally the potential to be a more stable foundation for the others, a source of emotional contrast and of a necessary wholesome mundanity.  That is a good thing for the Team to have.  I think it also speaks volumes to the heart of his character.  For this Wally, the Flash and heroism weren’t an escape from a bad personal situation.  His life was actually pretty comfy and privileged - he didn’t experience a brutal wakeup to the injustices of the world or some other personal call to action.  This is a Wally who opted into the game because he loves the players and sincerely believes in their values and mission.  And while that might mean he has a more romanticised idea of what heroism entails – and will probably face some rough shocks down the line as that rosy vision runs into those more brutal realities – it also means he brings a sincere hopefulness to the job that is less hardened than a lot of his roughed-up, pre-jaded peers.  Underneath the teen sarcasm and surface-level lancer/smart-guy traits, this Wally has as much power to be a stealth-Heart as any of his Flash!counterparts.
Something else I find interesting when using Wally is how a lot of his strengths and flaws feed into each other – and I think this alternate backstory is part of it.  For all of his good heart Wally can come off as insensitive, and I think some of that could be read as a product of living a more charmed life.  I think he’s susceptible to a thing that a lot of real people do – universalising their own personal experience as the default – and that while he is canonically a geek and somewhat genre-savvy about hero cliches, he’s a geek about in-universe media so he probably doesn’t think to apply those tropes to “real people” like himself or his colleagues.  While this Wally is a skeptic, he’s not a cynic, and I think he might forget how much of an outlier he is in a world where things like living parents and loving parents are often mutually exclusive.  He’s smart enough to connect dots but there’s a little blind-spot where he simply might not think to until one of the others jabs an elbow into his ribs, because his default view on humanity is in some ways a little kinder than typical due to that small but still significant amount of privilege.
At the same time, Wally is also someone who has probably run into (or watched his mentor run into) a lamp-post at high-speed at least once in his career.  He contains multitudes and among those multitudes is an endless capacity for some absolute Looney-Tunes nonsense, which the world is 100% better off for having.
I love him, your honour.
little venting on dash about ptsd, the portrayal of it in fandom and D.octor W.ho
okay not to suck intensely but I made the mistake of looking at the Doctor W.ho tag and I swear, the way tumblr talks about ptsd, trauma and shows where there is PTSD and trauma, is like... accidentally bound to make some real people's PTSD feel worse
the whole 'he has PTSD, he FAKES smiling, he's breaking down, he hides the pain behinf eveything is does' (especially said about a show that I generally associate with hope) is just... you KNOW people with PTSD can also be happy and really smile, right? WHILE suffering from it? And not just 'sometimes, but every day, and then yes, maybe they get triggered and are a nervous wreck for weeks, maybe a lot of their activities is with the purpose of feeling better *or* to escape feeling bad, they can overworry and have a negative view of every outcome of actions they take, they can avoid discussing things (or overshare!) and every person is different, just like the way they face whatever disorder they have is different.
My PTSD can lead me to 10 days straight of constant nightmares as soon as I close my eyes, which makes me sleep deprived and angry and teary, and has a constellation of symptoms that make hard to live in society, and I will still have hope and laugh, and it's not pretend-laughing. When I look at characters on tv with pts, every time a character is trying to deal with, either they *are* trying to hide pain or maybe they are just trying to live, but it doesn't make a difference, the fandom will say they are 100000% depressed and a bottomless pit of despair
and it makes me feel like... real people with PTSD who are just now learning they have it and what it is, will see this and think 'oh so that's how I'll end up, if I'm trying to be happy now it means I'm faking it and running from the inevitable' because damn it, I had to question myself a few times because of tumblr and I hate that I did, what more people with less self-awareness? Am I too happy? Does it mean it's not real and I'm avoiding the pain? No! PTSD is often accompanied by depression (which is not also a 'you can never smile' disorder) but doesn't come hand in hand with it, it's not automatic, and it's a bummer to watch my comfort shows only to read over and over how as soon as you got traumas your life is a forever tragedy and 'he has to heal!' -proceeds to discount everything he has done to do so, just because he still has avoidance (totally normal even if he's doing better, especially if traumas keep happening!) or hasn't fully healed yet (lots of people don't fully heal at all) and invalidates every second of happiness he has-
It feels like the opposite message of the Doctor, who says you smile because you know you'll be sad later. You really DO SMILE and then you are sad and then YOU SMILE AGAIN. Maybe you'll have an angry fit over something stupid later. Maybe you'll realize you are still hoping for everything to be better soon.
PTSD is heavy as hell for me, it's behind everything I do and think, but I can count on my hand how many time I have actually lost hope (temporarily), my breakdowns, and it just bothers me to read not only on D.octor Who but basically any show in which a character isn't broody about their trauma 'they are hiding their pain behind a smile' like yeah, SOMETIMES, sure, but other times we just smile, we still find things worth living for. Obviously there are people with PTSD who don't, but it's not a prerequisite of having PTSD. PTSD is trauma your brain can't elaborate, sometimes complex, sometimes it's part of how you grew up, it's not being unable to feel any happiness. And I feel like if the Doctor, thousands of years old, actually felt the way fandom thinks PTSD works, he'd have simply chosen not to regenerate no matter how much his friends begged, his story is about hope, not total despair, he keeps having bad stuff happening and being upset because it's a tvshow, if the show had ended with 14 he would have had a shot at being fine, unlike the Doctor described by the fandom, it's just that the season has to continue and if 15 is perfectly fine there are no emotional plots.
I guess all I want to say it... it bothers me that every single show, but especially the ones meant for children, are dissected and instead of a more complex view of pain and trauma that still involves, you know, will to live and some hope, I always have to choose between staying away from the fandom (though sometimes it's just for their weird takes due to shipping) or being subjected to metas that take away any hope and would make me not want to look at the show, because if you convince me that there is only pain and it's just too much to get better, I do NOT want to see that, I have enough in real life, thank you.
Oshi No Ko Episode 4: Manga-Based TV Drama
Tumblr media
So what happens if you struggle with keeping everything together when you already have six animation directors on a 20 minute episode? Well of course it's to add three more! And sort of comically enough, it manages to fix visual issues. However, it doesn't fix the foundational pitfalls of the direction and storyboarding that drag this adaptation down.
So yeah, adding more people to keep the pieces together has ended up working, but it really speaks to the challenges and issues that face their production pipeline for the episodes. As I said in the previous episode's review, shows like Ousama Ranking have at most 2 ADs for an episode, but lets do GWitch for a change of pace. The 2D Mech series, who in its most recent episode featured heavy use of Mobile Suits in combat and motion. So lets do a little tally, even though it's hard to compare.
GWitch's latest episode uses five ADs and one Assistant AD, and has a separate role of Mechanical AD that's split two and two between lead and assistant. How many does that leave GWitch with? In total, they have ten "Animation Directors". You know, one more than what Oshi No Ko has for lead Animation Directors.
So yeah, production issues who? In truth, I can't speak to anything other than what we can piece together from staff lineups and that sort of thing, but given the overall work and execution on Oshi No Ko, I'd say it's hard to discount when recent series from Doga Kobo have seen ADs top out in the range of six (My Senpai Is Annoying), which is already a large amount.
Anyways, the real aspects that bog it down. Oshi No Ko is a series with a lot of dialogue, and they established with the first real episode that they don't have a great deal of interest in making it an interesting conversation to follow. Unless the manga lays out the blocking and composition of scenes, it feels like Oshi No Ko struggles to find a way to fill space and time. Of course, there's plenty of caveats and added pieces that speak against this, but I had also mentioned those earlier. The original scenes, flat out, are more creative than a lot of the adapted ones.
Look at this layout. An anime original piece that lengthens the conversation at this point in the manga. It's creative and has a unique perspective that you can't really make use of in the manga.
Tumblr media
It's just that they don't really like relying on that, they'd sooner pull directly from the manga than shake it up and provide something that fits a screen better than a page. Take this one for example, it's effectively just a closeup of the same character shot in the manga, and even splits up Kana and the director's reactions in the conversation.
The direction highly favors cramped and closeup shots not for the sake of stuff like the expression and movement of some of the better pieces, but rather to cut corners and fill space since they don't have a better idea. Which is a shame, Oshi No Ko really is relegated to good pieces rather than being good.
Tumblr media
And the icing on the cake in that regard is how they handle such a dialogue heavy series, which as I said at the start, is not good. Slideshows, montages, random filler. They pull a lot of cheap and even lazy tricks to fill the space on the screen, and arguably none of them work well. It ends up feeling like it's droning on since you're not "actively" reading like you would in a manga. Just take a look at scenes like this.
There's zero motion, nothing creative to speak of to it, and the monologue is very flat and informative. By all metrics it just flops. There's nothing to engage viewers, nothing that speaks to any real effort to make the scene bearable or worth it compared to the manga.
Sometimes I wonder why I'm still watching this rather than reading the manga, but then I remember just how popular this anime seems to be. Not that I'm some anti-hyper or hater of Akasaka and Oshi No Ko, but I feel like providing a voice of reason that can give those examples and actual criticism for something that people continually overhype without any real explanation. As of writing this, Oshi No Ko is still above a 9 on MAL. It provides interesting if not somewhat expected information about the entertainment industry, and wraps it in poor packaging. Meanwhile, shows like Skip and Loafer cut to the heart of high school life on a macro scale and deliver wonderfully packaged messages and values to viewers.
It's just an imbalance in appreciation that I'd really like to tackle, given how Doga Kobo seems to be hardly holding on to Oshi No Ko here.
Note
i remember seeing this tv show as a kid that might have been a dream but the main thing i still remember from it is this big glass-like pillar at the centre of an island that got filled with rocks/stars/something and at the end of the episode they all got released and flew off into the sky. very heavy on purples. australia 2000s-2010s dont discount old reruns of something, it being a movie, or it being not real
If it's real I'm sure someone else remembers it!
Does this tv show sound familiar to anyone?
Gratitude Journal
The store has all the Christmas stuff out, including Christmas dog toys.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They're all so cute! Snake in a sweater cracks me up. I don't want them for my dogs because they'd just destroy them in 30 seconds, but as I pointed out to my husband, the toys have hanger loops, so I could totally put them on our Christmas tree. So I got the skunk and the penguin, and my employee discount made them very affordable.
Tumblr media
Also, I am still recovering from a pulled ab from over 2 weeks ago, and it's tough. I don't know if you know this, but you use your abs and core for literally every movement, so it's hard to rest the affected muscle. I keep thinking I'm better, then I'll move in a weird way or lift something slightly too heavy, and I'll hurt again.
Last night it got aggravated during a normal activity, and I got very sad and disappointed because it seems like it'll never get better, but then this morning my husband sent me a kind, thoughtful, encouraging text, saying he was sorry last night ended on a downer, but not to give up hope. I'm just so grateful to have this man in my corner. He knows me and gets me.
Also, we finished Reboot, which is a fun show, and along with everything else good about it, it's good to see Rachel Bloom on TV again.
How Does Spectrum's Pricing Compare to Competitors?
How Spectrum’s Pricing Stacks Up Against Competitors
Spectrum’s Competitive Pricing Overview
Spectrum offers a range of pricing options for its services. Their internet, TV, and phone plans are designed to meet various needs. Compared to competitors, Spectrum's pricing is often competitive. They provide several tiers of internet speeds, from basic to high-speed plans. This allows customers to choose a plan that fits their budget and usage. For TV services, Spectrum has packages that cater to different viewing preferences. This includes everything from basic channels to premium bundles.
When comparing Spectrum’s pricing to other major providers, several factors come into play. Spectrum often offers promotions for new customers. These can include discounts or free add-ons. For instance, they might offer reduced rates for the first year. They also sometimes include free installation or equipment. These promotions can make Spectrum’s pricing very appealing.
Comparing Spectrum to Other ISPs
When looking at competitors, it’s important to consider both price and value. Some ISPs offer lower prices but may have hidden fees. Spectrum aims to be transparent with their pricing. They strive to avoid surprise charges and offer clear, straightforward rates. Their pricing structure is designed to be easy to understand, with no hidden costs.
For example, while some competitors might offer lower base rates, their plans could come with additional fees or limited data. Spectrum’s plans typically include a fair amount of data and reliable speeds. Their no-contract options also provide flexibility. This means you can switch plans or providers without facing hefty cancellation fees. This flexibility is a significant advantage when comparing Spectrum to other ISPs.
Value-Added Features in Spectrum’s Pricing
Spectrum’s pricing often includes value-added features. Their plans include benefits like free Wi-Fi, access to a vast network of hotspots, and 24/7 customer support. These extras enhance the overall value of their packages. For instance, Spectrum’s internet plans come with no data caps, which can be a big plus for heavy users. Additionally, their TV packages often include popular channels and on-demand content.
Spectrum also offers bundling options. Combining TV, internet, and phone services can lead to further savings. Bundling is a common way to lower monthly costs while enjoying multiple services. This can make Spectrum’s overall pricing more attractive compared to competitors who may charge higher rates for similar services. By offering competitive pricing and valuable extras, Spectrum aims to provide a comprehensive and appealing choice for customers.
How Does AT&T’s Satellite TV Service Compare to Cable?
Tumblr media
Comparison of AT&T Satellite TV and Cable
AT&T’s satellite TV service offers a different experience compared to traditional cable. One key difference is the method of delivery. Satellite TV uses signals from satellites in space, while cable TV relies on physical cables. This means that satellite TV can be accessed in areas where cable might not reach. For example, if you live in a rural area, satellite TV could be a better option than cable. The wide coverage area of satellite TV often makes it a good choice for people living outside city limits.
Another difference is the installation process. Satellite TV requires a dish to be installed outside your home. This dish connects to the satellites to receive signals. On the other hand, cable TV needs a cable line to be run into your home, which might involve drilling or installing extra equipment. While the installation of a satellite dish can be less intrusive, it’s important to consider that weather conditions like heavy rain or snow can affect satellite signals. Cable TV generally has more consistent reception because it doesn’t depend on weather conditions.
Content and Channel Options
When it comes to channel options and content, both AT&T Satellite TV and cable offer a wide range of choices. However, satellite TV often provides more options for channels and programming. AT&T’s satellite service includes premium channels, sports packages, and international programming that might not be available with cable. For instance, if you are a sports fan, satellite TV might offer more sports channels than your local cable provider. Additionally, satellite TV often includes HD and 4K content, enhancing your viewing experience.
Cable TV packages also offer a variety of channels, but the availability can vary based on your location and the cable provider. In some cases, cable companies offer customizable packages that let you pick and choose channels. This can be a benefit if you only want specific channels and want to avoid paying for extras you don’t use.
Cost and Flexibility
Cost is another important factor to consider. Satellite TV and cable TV have different pricing structures. Satellite TV often has competitive pricing, and there might be special offers for new customers. For example, AT&T’s satellite TV service may come with promotional discounts or bundled deals that include internet and phone services. Cable TV prices can vary based on the package you choose and any additional equipment or services you add.
Flexibility is also a consideration. Satellite TV can be a good option if you move frequently or want to set up TV service in multiple locations. Since satellite dishes can be installed almost anywhere, it’s easier to transfer your service compared to cable. With cable TV, you typically need to schedule a new installation if you move.
In summary, AT&T’s satellite TV service and traditional cable TV each have their own advantages. Satellite TV offers wide coverage and a variety of channels, but it can be affected by weather. Cable TV provides consistent reception and often has flexible channel packages. Consider your location, content preferences, and budget when choosing between the two.
Fibre Broadband Deals in the UK: What You Need to Know?
In today’s digital age, high-speed internet is essential for everything from working from home to streaming your favorite shows and gaming online. Fibre broadband is often the best choice for a fast, reliable connection, and with a range of fibre broadband deals available in the UK, it’s important to know what to look for to find the best option for your needs.
Understanding Fibre Broadband
Fibre broadband uses fibre-optic cables to deliver internet services, providing faster speeds and more reliable connections compared to traditional copper-based ADSL services. In the context of fibre broadband deals UK, there are two main types: Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP). FTTC offers high speeds by using fibre cables up to the nearest cabinet and then copper lines to your home, while FTTP delivers fibre directly to your property for even faster speeds.
Types of Fibre Broadband Deals
Basic Fibre Packages: Ideal for light users who need reliable internet for browsing and occasional streaming. These packages usually offer speeds between 35-50 Mbps, sufficient for basic household activities.
Standard Fibre Deals: Suitable for families or households with moderate internet use. These deals typically provide speeds ranging from 50-100 Mbps, accommodating more simultaneous users and higher bandwidth activities like HD streaming and online gaming.
Superfast Fibre Deals: Designed for heavy internet users and smart homes, these plans offer speeds above 100 Mbps. They are perfect for households with multiple devices streaming in 4K, gaming online, or working from home.
Ultrafast and Gigabit Fibre: For those who demand the highest speeds available, ultrafast and gigabit fibre deals offer speeds of 300 Mbps and above, up to 1 Gbps. These packages are suited for very large households, businesses, and those requiring the fastest internet for intensive tasks.
Comparing Fibre Broadband Deals
When comparing fibre broadband deals, consider the following factors:
Speed: Choose a plan that fits your usage needs. Higher speeds are beneficial for more intensive use but may come at a higher cost.
Price: Look for competitive pricing and check if the deal includes any introductory offers or discounts.
Contract Length: Deals can range from 12 to 24 months or more. Consider how long you’re willing to commit and any potential exit fees.
Additional Features: Some providers include extras like free installation, broadband routers, or subscriptions to streaming services. Factor these into your decision.
Customer Service: Reliable customer support can make a big difference if you encounter any issues with your broadband service.
Choosing the Right Provider
UK providers offer a variety of fibre broadband deals, including BT, Virgin Media, Sky, TalkTalk, and more. Each has its strengths, so it’s worth comparing their offers based on speed, customer reviews, and additional benefits. Some providers also offer bundles that include TV and phone services, which might be a good option if you’re looking to consolidate your home services.
Conclusion
Navigating the world of fibre broadband deals in the UK can be overwhelming, but with the right approach, you can secure a package that meets your needs and budget. Whether you're looking for ultra-fast speeds for streaming and gaming, or a more basic plan for everyday browsing, there are deals tailored to every user. Key factors to consider include the speed, contract length, and additional perks like free installation or bundled services. By comparing offers from different providers and understanding your usage needs, you can find a fibre broadband deal that provides excellent value and keeps you connected seamlessly.
