Revolutionizing Classrooms with Pregnancy | In a dynamic history class, a 19-year-old pregnant man captivates his peers with his insights. His fitted polo shirt clings tightly to his prominent belly, symbolizing a unique blend of youth and motherhood. Engaged in a spirited debate with his boyfriend, they challenge the norms in more ways than one. Each hand raised is a step toward breaking boundaries, showcasing that education knows no traditional limits. The classroom buzzes with energy as desks get cluttered with books and curiosity, creating a vibrant scene. I find the detail of Sherlock addressing John by his first name in The Abominable Bride really interesting because during the Victorian era, the use of first names was unusual and normally reserved for married or engaged couples. Even close friends or acquaintances would usually not refer to each other by their first name, hence why they call each other “Holmes” and “Watson” throughout majority of the episode.
The use of first names and nicknames was restricted to people who were very close to each other during the Victorian era, such as relatives or occasionally intimate friends, but even then it was out of the norm. Generally speaking, only the children of the family would be referred to by their first names. Men would also generally never refer to each other by their first names, as it would be seen as intimate or informal, even when it came to familial relationships or close companionship
The interaction in the episode goes as follows -
HOLMES: Thank you, John.
WATSON: Since when do you call me John?
HOLMES: You’d be surprised.
WATSON: No, I wouldn’t. Time you woke up, Sherlock. I’m a storyteller. I know when I’m in one.
HOLMES: Of course. Of course you do, John.
John remarks the use of his first name because it was unusual for non-couples to refer to each other as such, but then reciprocates it by calling Sherlock by his as well. So. It’s more intimate than you’d expect at first glance. Fun fact.

mock exam preparation🗒️
I feel less anxious than yesterday and my neurobiology exam went a lot better than expected! Managed to do 7/8 tasks so I’m pretty confident about my grade :) Went home, had lunch and then worked through the 8 pages of history homework on the Cuba crisis and Korean War. (Yup, half the text is highlighted- people tend to make fun of me for it but it helps me remember things; that way I can remember exactly what information was stored on what part of the page)🌀
Today and tomorrow will be spent at my desk studying for my 4 hour long politics mock exam on Thursday. We got 84 (yes, 84- not 48) pages of material to go through. I’m already loosing my mind and all I did was download everything…

"Why didn't I learn this in history class?"
Lemme talk about something a bit more serious today. Because ever since I started to ramble once more about historical context for Castlevania Nocturne I have gotten asked this one so often:
"Why did I not learn this in school?" Or: "Why did I not learn this in history class?"
And I shall tell you why: Because school sucks.
I do not mean this in some exaggerated way or hyperbolic way or anything. School sucks. And you do not go to school to learn anything useful, you go to school for two reasons: a) So that you are out of the hairs of your parents and they can be exploited at their work place. b) So that you learn to listen to authority from a young age on and get some basic skills that you will ideally be able to leverage for your own exploitation.
I am sorry for sounding so darn Marxist right now, but that it is it.
And here is the thing: Because the entire school system is build towards exploitation, nobody actually wants you to learn about actual history. It could give you ideas, and that would be very tragic, wouldn't it?
Depending on the country you live in, history class mainly is concerned with two things. Teach you a bit about the bad stuff, and then also get some nice patriotic propaganda into your head. The latter stuff is especially strong in the US. I mean, pretty much every kid learns some variation of the entire darn "thanksgiving" bullshit. I just will leave you with the Adam's Family Values scene about this.
youtube
I mean, this is especially noticable right now of course, where everyone is crying about kids maybe learning just a little bit of real history in school - and so many people trying to forbid it.
In Germany, our history class basically goes like this: We note everything that has happened until 1900 in about three hours, only doing a very, very rough overview, and then we will talk about the Weimar Republic, First World War, Third Reich and Second World War at nauseum. Which could be good, if we actually talked about how the Nazis came into power. But if you ever talk with any random German who has not studied history, you will notice that most of them are of the opinion that the Nazi party was not elected in the popular vote, and that at least 40% of all people in the Third Reich were in fact against Hitler. Both of those things are not true. Nazis were elected - and they used some trickery to stay in power - and more than 90% of Germans were in full support of Hitler.
And the French Revolution? Obviously you will not learn about that. It might give you ideas. You know. Ideas what to do with unelected people who rule your country. And if you learn about the French Revolution, you might see how there are certain parallels to modern times.
You see, those who do not learn from history, are fated to repeat it.
Which kinda brings me to the even more radical part of this. You know what you can do to really fucking annoy those in power? You can learn about history. And you can teach others about history.
They will often tell you, that history is not as important as STEM. And in some way, sure: History will not cure cancer, and it will only do so much to help with climate change. But... It will teach you about how to recognize tyranny. And how to fight it. And frankly, under tyranny you will most likely not get cured of the cancer, let alone climate change. So yeah, tyranny - and getting rid of it - is important.
And, how did a wise man once say?

So one of the new classes I have this semester at school is U.S. Government and the moment the teacher opened his mouth I knew I wasn't gonna like this class too much.
He said that whole "Democrats and Republicans just need to listen and stop judging each other just because they have different opinions" bullshit.
I'm four days into this course and he has started every day with saying some variation of this sentiment and it has annoyed me to no end.

I genuinely hope I never learn about stuff like sherlock holmes & oscar wilde in english class cuz like there’s absolutely no way I would be even somewhat normal about it and I really don’t need an entire class knowing how much of a fucking nerd I am lmao

friday the 13th🛸
Made it through this special day without any incidents, yay! History class was spent reading up on the Vietnam war and sending stickers to a classmate (or friend? I am not sure how to define our relationship). As expected I got to read The Secret History while the rest of my English class finished writing their reviews; it took the entirety of the period. Math class was pretty uneventful because half of the class was on the orchestra field trip; I still have to copy todays notes though since I didn’t get to finish them.
Remember how I was looking forward to todays therapy session? Well…it wasn’t particularly bad but the moment I walked in there I didn’t have a single thing to talk about, so we just reviewed the past year. It was rather boring and one thing my therapist said pissed me off; I’ll get back to it next session and hope we can clear this up. I’m a bit mad that it didn’t help but made me feel even more uncomfortable…
task for the weekend: buy secret Santa presents🎁, organise my notes from english class so I can hand them in on Monday📝
