July and August 1979. The unusual transatlantic production schedule of the original Marvel STAR WARS comic, which for a time was published in the U.S. in 36-page monthly color comics and in eight-page weekly installments in the B&W UK series, led for a while to the use of two different inkers for regular penciller Carmine Infantino: Bob Wiacek, who did the cover of issue #25, and Canadian artist Gene Day. Generally, Wiacek and Day inked the stories in alternating issues of the color series, although Wiacek's inks might appear on several consecutive covers. They each gave Infantino's pencils a distinctly different look. Here's a page from issue #25, inked by Day:

If I had to choose just one word to characterize the work of Gene Day, who died suddenly in 1982 at the age of 31, it would be "intricate." Whether doing inks/finishes or both pencils and inks, his art was characterized by an abundance of textures and small details, many of them seemingly rendered with a pen. Note for example in the second panel above the shading on Baron Tagge's face and the linework of the structure behind him, and the grille structure of the ceiling in the third panel.

A side note worth mentioning here, not related to the inking, is the use of color. Original colorist Ben Sean uses the two-color treatment of the hyperspace shot to segue into three panels with a minimal color palette, which I think is supposed to represent the limitations of Tagge's cyber-vision (without which, as the final panel indicates, he is blind). The digital recoloring has mostly followed Sean's original colors, but they're brighter and more saturated than they appeared on newsprint paper, and for some reason, the recolored version of the second panel has substituted a solid orange fill for the original yellow-orange gradient, as seen below:

Note that the line weight of Wiacek's inks is different than Day's, and more of the inking appears to have been done with a brush than a pen. There's still some pen shading (note for example the bottoms of Tagge's boots in the final panel), but much less than in Day's pages, and minor details, especially in the backgrounds, feel a bit sketchier. Consequently, Wiacek's figures have a greater sense of solidity than Day's, but their environments are often less sharply defined. (This isn't necessarily bad — from a storytelling standpoint, it may be better not to get lost in the weeds with extraneous background detail — but it does look different.) Note also the Zipatone texture fill in the second panel. Day uses Zipatone as well, but more sparingly and often in smaller areas, where it's often overshadowed by the detail of his line work.

With the release of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK in 1980, the UK series was relaunched as a monthly, simplifying production logistics. Infantino did not pencil the film adaptation, but he did the first four post-ESB issues, each with a different inker (Day and Chic Stone, then Tom Palmer, then Day, and finally Carlos Garzón), which led to even more dramatic differences in the look of the finished art. Infantino, who by his own account had no particular enthusiasm for the series, then departed. Gene Day, meanwhile, was doing some extraordinary work on Marvel's MASTER OF KUNG FU series, initially finishing Mike Zeck's pencils and then doing both pencils and inks, which really showed off his enthusiasm for intricate design.

Prior to his death, Day did layouts for two complete issues of STAR WARS, which appeared in #68 and #69 after his death, finished by Tom Palmer. Although they don't have the complex linework of the work Day finished himself, they have a really striking sense of design that make them arguably the most interesting-looking issues in the original Marvel series.

Incidentally, Dan Day and David Day, who did (inter alia) the Renegade Press CASES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES series, are Gene Day's brothers.

Summary: You just wanted to take a shower, but you're disturbed by a horrible spider.

A/n: I struggle to write that because spiders are my number one phobia and just thinking about it is killing me.

The heat of Australia knocks you down a little more each day and the nights are real hell. Between Oscar sticking to you, because he's used to it, and the mosquitoes who are attacking you, you thought you were at the end of your rope.

You step into the bathroom, ready to take a cold shower, in a hope to cool yourself down. You tie your hair into a horrible bun and look at yourself in the mirror for a few seconds. Your skin is much tanner, but still not used to the harsh sun of the southern equator. You run your hand over your face and notice how oily and rough it is. You remove your clothes, careful not to touch the areas where your skin is red, burning. You leave them on the ground, near those that Oscar left the day before, and you turn towards the shower.

As you were about to go inside, your whole body froze. So this hell will never end? You take a long look at the horrible black and hairy creature that is at the bottom of the bathtub. Its eight legs are frozen to the ground and its eyes are fixed on you. Neither you nor the spider dare to move. Your heart beats fast and you feel your legs start to shake. You open your mouth but nothing comes out, as if your voice is blocked. Then, finally, as the spider begins to walk towards you, a shrill cry finally escapes from your throat.

You walk backwards desperately, until your back meets the wall. Your eyes never leave the spider as you feel this horrible feeling of a spider walking all over your body.

''OSCAAAAR'' You scream a second time, hoping your boyfriend can hear you across the big house. In less than a minute, someone opens the door in a big 'boum' and Oscar takes you in his arms to move you away.

''Y/n! You're ok!?'' He places both hands on your cheeks and turns your head to either side, as if to check if you have any injury. ''Why did you scream? Are you in pain? Did you fall?'' He debited his words, as if the end of the world has fallen on you.

''Spider..'' Is all you manage to say, still in shock from the big hairy bug you just saw.

''Spider?'' Repeat Oscar, with a once of worries in his eyes.

Oscar isn't really afraid of spiders. He is accustomed. But just knowing it's a spider doesn't help much. It can be a black widow or a small house spider.

He wraps your towel around you, to prevent you from catching a cold (even if the heat in the room definitely prevents you from it.) and heads towards the bathtub.

He starts giggling when he sees the 'little' spider at the bottom of the bathtub, desperately trying to get out.

''What are you doing there...'' He starts talking to the spider while grabbing it by its two back legs.

''WHAT THE HELL OSCAR!?'' You scream as he shows you the spider with a smirk. ''It's a Huntsman. They are harmless.''

''AH HUNTSMAN!? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!?'' The horrible creature starts moving in all directions and tries to get out of the grip of Oscar's fingers but can do nothing.

The Australian uses his other hand to open the bathroom window and places the spider on the sill. It takes the opportunity to run and hide in the bushes below.

''Welcome in Australia, honey.'' He giggled again and leaned to hug her but she walked back.

''Wash your hand before touching me, I don't wanna have baby spiders on my skin.'' Oscar rolls his eyes and quickly runs his hands under the water before forcing you into a hug. You struggle slightly but eventually let yourself go and he kisses your forehead.

''Go take that shower, my mum and sis want to show you Sidney.'' You groan slightly but he finally lets go of you and leaves the bathroom to give you your moment of privacy alone.

1. What is something that your OC would never purchase for themselves, but would be (secretly?) delighted to receive as a gift?

Horses. Alaric does not usually wear jewelry or has a liking to certain clothes, and he is not usually stingy with his money. However, he has a fondness for horses, but woukd never buy his own horse because House Vallic has so many spare horses in the stable (although they aren’t his).

2. Is your OC ticklish? Has anyone ever dared to find out?

actually yes! It’s was a really funny experience for his wife, Cerelle, when she found out (wdym this giant man is ticklish?). He is, however, willing to break a few fingers if someone (*cough* Aegon) tries especially when his guard is let down.

3. How easy does your OC find it to apologise?

Alaria Redwyne gave birth to stubborn children only. Alaric finds it difficult to apologize unless it’s to someone he really cares for (like his sister, emotional incest go brrr)

4. When did your OC first see a dead body? If they have not seen one yet, how might they react to doing so?

When Alaric was 3-ish, his older brother Cyrus, who is was 7 at the time, would die (STILL FIGURING OUT HOW but supposedly a ‘fall’) and although he was too young to understand much, the memory of seeing his older brother’s dead body is engraved in his head, even if it is a blurry image at times. Shortly, his younger brother, an unnamed twin who died during childbirth, was buried later in the same year, leaving Alaric in that strange position again.

5. Does your OC have any recurring dreams? Have they ever told anyone else about them?

Not necessarily. He often does not remember his dreams and when he does have recurring dreams, which he had a few times at 14 after his first battle, he mostly contained it to himself and his sister.

6. Is your OC stingy with their money (or other resources)? Or are they something of a spendthrift?

He is a spendthrift. Absolutely. Alaric knows his family is wealthy, especially during the reign of Viserys I. He does not stop himself in any way from indulging in wine or luxuries, nor does he feel any regret really.

7. Does your OC have a sweet tooth? Or do they prefer to avoid sweets and sugary treats?

No. Alaric would choose carbs and savoury food any day over sweets. As a child, he indulged himself in too too much sugar, that as an adult or teenager, the taste was rather sickening now that he has extended the horizon of his food choices.

8. Is your OC easily provoked by insults or mockery?

YES. A Vallici feels strong. And unlike his Father or sister, who are better at containing his emotions, he acts on this anger. Alaric cares deeply for honor and reputation and a jab at that or his family makes him feel vulnerable and exposed to everybody, so to counter it, he acts like a dick or acts violently

9. Where is somewhere your OC has visited that they never want to visit again?

The Red Keep. After his mother’s health became worse, Alaric and sisters were sent to the Red Keep to be warded off to his uncle, Lyam Redwyne. It’s not that it was a bad experience, but it was boring and so isolating for young boy. Alicent did try to mother him, as did other figures, which really did not help and instead messed around with his head. It was this isolating childhood that really helped made the fact that he can not express himself truly and hides himself behid fake bravados and anger bc at the court, no one can be themselves. However after his sister married Aegon, Alaric, who is devoted to her utterly completely, went back there

10. Is your OC ever somewhat flirtatious?

He is a frat boy! Men, women, old, young — Alaric is really charming and really good at flriting. If it breathes and looks good, he wants to stick his dick in it and he does so everytime.

And that’s not even taking into consideration the billions earned in NET PROFITS from their investments in the military–industrial–congressional complex (MICC), with hundreds of our leaders in both houses receiving monthly coupons from these companies.

Within 24 hours of centibillionaire Elon Musk using his X platform to upend a congressional funding bill and push the federal government to the brink of a shutdown, three GOP lawmakers are now calling for him to be named Speaker of the House.

On Thursday, Senator Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican, was the first to float the idea, in a post on Musk’s own X platform. “The Speaker of the House need not be a member of Congress,” Paul wrote. “Nothing would disrupt the swamp more than electing Elon Musk.”

Senator Mike Lee from Utah also endorsed Musk as Speaker, though he added that he would also be happy with Vivek Ramaswamy taking up the role, he told right-wing talk show host Benny Johnson, “Let them choose one of them, I don't care which one, to be their Speaker,” Lee said. “That would revolutionize everything, it would break up the firm.”

Paul’s suggestion was quickly picked up by another far-right elected official when Marjorie Taylor Greene, a representative from Georgia, wrote on X, “I’d be open to supporting @elonmusk for Speaker of the House. DOGE can only truly be accomplished by reigning [sic] in Congress to enact real government efficiency. The establishment needs to be shattered just like it was yesterday. This could be the way.”

Greene was referring to Musk's role in killing a bipartisan government funding deal that current Speaker of the House Mike Johnson spent months negotiating with Republicans and Democrats. Despite president-elect Trump and his team not objecting to the deal, according to Politico, Musk began a campaign on X on Wednesday to blow the deal out of the water, posting about it more than 100 times.

Ultimately, Trump and vice president–elect JD Vance issued a lengthy statement on X calling the deal a “betrayal of our country” and urging Republican lawmakers to reject the deal—which they did.

What comes next is unclear. If a deal isn’t reached by Friday, federal workers will stop receiving paychecks, and large parts of the government will temporarily stop operating. But with Democrats saying they have little interest in returning to the negotiating table, and Johnson having already ruled out raising the debt ceiling, which Trump is demanding, there is no obvious path to a viable bill, much less one Musk approves of.

Following what looks to be the failure of the bill, Democratic senator Jeff Merkley wrote on X, “Speaker Johnson: Maybe it’s easier to just hand your gavel over to Musk.”

Johnson and Trump’s transition team did not respond to requests for comment. Musk did not respond to a request for comment. On X, Musk responded to one post referencing Paul and Greene’s suggestion and Democratic criticism of his influence, writing, “They are just upset that, for once in a long while, their attempt to pillage taxpayers failed!”

As Paul wrote, there is no explicit Constitutional requirement for the Speaker of the House to be an elected member of Congress, though every one in US history has been. Just over a year ago, Trump’s supporters floated the idea that he could be installed as Speaker after Kevin McCarthy, a California Republican, was ousted from the position.

Musk’s ascent within American politics has been rapid, from donating (along with his PAC) hundreds of millions of dollars to Trump in the final months of the campaign to being installed as cochair of the nonexistent “Department of Government Efficiency,” an advisory group tasked with coming up with proposals to slash government spending and, presumably, fire huge numbers of federal employees.

The scale of his influence over Trump and his policies is unclear, but it’s obvious that many lawmakers believe he holds a significant amount of sway. On Wednesday, Senator Marsha Blackburn from Tennessee posted on X about the Kids Online Safety Act. Rather than tagging Johnson, she tagged Musk.

Becoming Speaker of the House would put Musk in a position of actual power, but one of the key roles of the position—being second in line for the presidency—would presumably be stripped from him given that Musk, a US citizen since 2002, is not a natural-born US citizen and is therefore unable to serve as president.

The ideal of ‘no taxation without representation’ was expressed in the constitutional establishment of the Congress which would tax, authorize spending for different policies, determine the laws, and have the sole power to declare war.

The President would spend the money as authorized, see that the laws were ‘faithfully executed, lead the army and state militias in defence the country if attacked. The President could veto an entire bill including budget and return the bill to Congress with his objections.

If the vetoed bill was reapproved by 2/3 of each chamber the President’s veto would be over ruled.

The President does not have the power to pick and choose what laws to enforce or which authorizations to payout except as specifically provided by Congress (emergency funding budget for disasters).

Do you think Severen survived the end of Near Dark and he's probably just chewing on roadkill somewhere until he gets his strength back? I think he's the most likely to have survived; there's so much emphasis on daylight, direct daylight being the only thing that can kill them, that his death seemed...an odd way to go out permanently. Personally, I like to lean on 'they'll all be fine eventually, it just won't be a very fun recovery, plus transfusions don't work like that and Mae and Caleb are still vampires.'

Weirdest song you get stuck in your head? A rotating mix of atrocious pop music; sometimes it's just snippets of whatever I've been listening to recently. Right now I have "Father" by the Misfits stuck in my head.

What is an item you wish would become a fad? Common sense; selfishly I do wish goth would go mainstream again like it did for two minutes in 2014ish, just to make it easier to find dark makeup.

If you had to live in an era, what would you choose? None in the past; I think it'd be fun to visit, but between health concerns and other factors I really wouldn't want to move someplace else. If i HAD to....just like. A couple decades earlier, I guess?

Fav genre of music? Most of what I listen to falls under the rock umbrella.

Fav past time? Writing, reading, I'm bad at it but also like painting. My favorite time-wasting activities outside of my house are wandering art museums and this really nice botanical garden I'm lucky to live near. I don't consider it a time-waster because it's my therapy, but I spend a LOT of time at the National Aquarium too (not exactly local, but not a horrible drive).

Gators or Crocs? like...the animals? Crocodiles are one of my favorite animals, but I love everything crocodilia. I have a bunch of tiny alligators and crocs on my desk at work, and another that lives on top of the radio in my car.

Possums or Armadillos? the latter for the novelty; we have a lot of possums around here so I'm used to seeing them.
