Thank you @daggerbean for the tag! And welcome back, consider yourself tagged back if you have something else! <3 Another slow week, a last-minute project took me away... Next I'll have something more, hopefully.

Some Cullavellan, it's been a while. Cullen tried again at challenging her to a drinking game. She was raised Dalish with home-brewed spirits and can't be beaten, just brought to sing.

Whale AU shenanigans, the original one: bed-ridden raccoons are a delight to have around when you're writing the essay of your life, absolutely. (traditional from my sketchbook!)

It was all going well, and she was chatting with Josephine and her sister Yvette about Antiva and vernissages, when the weird dish appeared.

A waiter stopped by the trio, perfectly still with a silver tray balanced on his gloved hand. He cleared his throat, once and twice, and when Aisling finally turned and asked him with a smile what she could do for him, the waiter lowered the tray with grace.

And presented her with a small china bowl, richly decorated in blue hunting scenes with gold details… Full of salad.

Aisling took the bowl with one end, the offered tiny fork with the other and thanked the waiter. She didn’t miss how both Montilyet sisters gasped, ad viewing the content of the bowl. Josephine with worry, Yvette with excitement.

Aisling looked at them and found the same emotions on their faces.

She had no idea about why such a gesture could elicit such a reaction from them. Looking down at the content of the bowl, it was just filled with arugula leaves, so freshly green they must have been just picked, and neatly washed before being served.

It was a little weird that there seemed to be no other ingredient to the dish, and no dressing whatsoever, but it also was true that Aisling wasn’t the best judge over how Orlais preferred to serve its rocket salad.

It was definitely weird how the whole of the west side of the upper corridor in the ballroom had stopped to look at her. Which explained why Josephine wasn’t telling anything about how she should behave right now, with a bowl of arugula in her hand.

She looked around, felt the expectation radiating in waves and directing at her.

Months ago, she would have been spooked by all the eyes on her.

Months ago, she hadn’t been the Inquisitor for months.

Without any clue about what the Game expected her to do with some salad, she just shrugged and did what it felt a good logical solution.

She dipped the tiny fork in the leaves, picked up a dainty little morsel -little and graceful, just as Josie had taught her- and brought it to her lips, taking a mouthful.

Other people gasped, Aisling just chewed. Spitting now was not an option, she could see it too.

Beside, she quite liked arugula, the bitterness mildened by the spiciness.

It wasn’t the best, unseasoned and alone, and this one came clearly from a greenhouse, for in the wild it would have been too soon, but it was fresh enough and tasty.

And under the scrutiny of half the ballroom, not knowing why exactly everyone had stopped to look at her and now apparently also called their friends and their grandmothers, she ate it all to the last leaf.

“Well, that was refreshing.” She smiled at the crowd when she was finished. “Can I know who sent it? I would really like to thank them for the lovely treat.”

It was, apparently, a good thing to say: some ladies started to giggle, and she could glimpse both the Dowager and Madame De Fer smiling under their masks, brief flashes before they turned away.

Something good must have happened, but she still didn’t understand the start from the end.

𝐈𝐅 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐔𝐎𝐔𝐒 𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐁𝐎𝐋𝐎𝐆𝐘 essays were not the end of James Potter, certainly Y/N Y/L/N would be. She had the astonishing aptitude to spin his head right round, from madness or from love, he couldn't quite tell; but to be sure, she had cast a spell on him, one of those he could neither ward off nor get rid of; and every day, the coward and the fool he was bit back the love confession when it dangled dangerously close to his tongue.

That day, however, a novel thought crossed his mind. Halfway through his (surprisingly diligent, given the material) reading of his Charms textbook, James Potter was interrupted by a disgruntled prefect and a girl babbling like a chattering top, and he thought to himself that in a surprising turn of events, maybe Herbology homework would kill Y/N Y/L/N.

“She won't stop asking for you, James,” groaned the prefect, his face twisted into a grimace that spoke volumes about his eagerness to be there. “If you can find a way to shut her up, I'll be forever grateful.”

Startled, James stood up with a resounding scrape of his chair (he'd deal with the dark looks of the studious pupils in the back later), just in time to grab onto the shoulders of a precariously balanced Y/N. She giggled, seemingly unconcerned with the corner of the desk that had just about impaled her in the groin.

“You look so funny, James,” she cooed, earning the pair of them more daggered-looks from the students. “Why do you look so funny? Have you always looked this funny?”

“Merlin, what happened to you? You look like absolute garbage.”

She hardly had time to pout, or rather James failed to notice. His gaze had fallen on the scarlet spots, striped with sickly white, that he discerned between the buttons on her collar and the crooks of her forearms. These marks were all the more disturbing than her haggard eyes, her tangled hair and her drunken sailor's walk.

“Where’d you get that wound?” he queried — his voice had risen an octave all of a sudden. Puzzled, he turned to the Gryffindor prefect before Y/N could utter any more strings of syllables. “What happened to her?”

“Something about Herbology class and a plant of Dragon’s Tongue that should not have been anywhere near the students?” he winced, then gave a noncommittal shrug. “Heaven knows what she was trying to say. Pomfrey embalmed her with Peaceblossom oil and she's been like this since. Apparently, it's a side effect of the poultice. Look, can I leave her with you now? I've got loads to do.”

Not waiting for an answer, the prefect turned on his heels and stomped out of the library, pestering for the walls. Y/N chuckled giddily, leaning her full weight on James' shoulder; the latter was still too dazed to stop her from playing with the lapel of his sweater.

“Red really suits you!” she beamed, attempting to bury her nose in the fabric of his shirt—but he pushed her back as gently as he could, balancing her with a hand on her side.

“Alright, Y/N, that is very flattering and all, but you should rest. I’m taking you back to the common room.”

“I think,” she dropped her voice to a low whisper. James would have done better to ignore her drug-induced delusions, but Y/N's warm breath right below his ear had derailed his heart. “I think you should wear it more often. It really brings out those beautiful eyes of yours.”

Fortunate indeed that red looked good on him, because there was not a single patch left on his face that was not bright scarlet. Gulping with great effort, he forced himself to concentrate on his belongings he was putting away, on Y/N he still held at arm's length, and on the nonchalant smile he donned.

“You mean that?” (She nodded excitedly, like a little girl who’s just shared an immense confidence. James chuckled too, something vibrant and almost liberated.) “I’ll have Pomfrey drug you more often, if that’s what it takes for you to compliment me.”

“Hey, don’t get too comfortable, now, Potter. It’s not like I like your... stupid... brainless... idiotic... face.”

His chest filled with liquid warmth at the words she stammered, like the first sip of Butterbeer on the coldest day of the year. He would’ve forgiven anything — calling him every name under the sun and interrupting his first productive study session of the semester — if it meant he saw the doozy, radiant smile she gave him then.

“Come on, lean on me. Let’s get you to bed.”

He extended his arm, and she interlocked her own, James’s leather bag on his shoulder, Y/N’s wobbly excitement dripping from her every move like a cloud of sunlight; and thus they made their way out of the Hogwarts library, James Potter on the arm of his everlasting crush, steadying her whenever she tripped, careful not to press on any of her burns; and he had the widest grin on his face, growing as light-headed and exhilarated as Y/N’s with each step they took.

“How did you even get burns on your neck and forearms anyway? Don’t you have a, I don’t know, shirt to cover them up?”

Y/N turned to him with widened eyes, as if he had spoken the most absurd words in existence.

“The Dragon’s Tongue jumped at me, obviously. How else?”

“Right. Obviously. Silly me.”

“No, I’m actually dead serious,” she trailed on and on, miraculously avoiding a collision with a hurried First Year thanks to James’s timely pull, “I think those... those dunderheads! Had a personal vendetta against me. Have you ever seen a Dragon’s Tongue lurch at you?”

“To my chagrin, no.”

“Well it’s terrifying. It’ll haunt my nightmares. For sure. With their... roots! And all that.”

“Hm-hm. Serves you right for picking an elective as lame as Herbology.”

“Excuse you!” Y/N swatted James’s arm, and anyone who might have looked at the pair at that very instant would have recognized the unmistakable fragrance of love, distilled in their laughs. “Herbology is the most noble subject in the curriculum! It’s got... plants!”

“A most compelling argument.”

“And flowers!”

“Color me stoked.”

“And... and even trees, sometimes. But you wouldn’t know,” she perked up her chin with a fake-haughty grimace that only enchanted James further, “you don’t understand the beauty of vegetation.”

“What I understand from what you're telling me is that sometimes those pretty plants you study threaten to kill you, and that I, as the top student in DADA, would be just the person to protect you.”

Y/N frowned. At least she was walking in a somewhat straight line now, and even more luckily, didn’t seem to realize they had already reached the door to Y/N's common room. It mattered little how much James longed to keep her on his arm forever...

“I thought Remus was the DADA stop student.”

“Well, he lied.” (He hadn’t. Remus came out on top in every class he took, and James had half a feeling he would have too in those he did not even take. But how would it look if he went back on his word now, and toned down his competence?) “I could be a much better bodyguard than him.”

“I know,” beamed Y/N with a face so cloudless and genuine he wondered if her intoxication had not been an act all along, “that’s why I went to you first.”

The earth shook for a second beneath James' feet, or perhaps it was the shifting stairs of the floor that carried him far, far above the sky and beyond the Sun. Y/N smiled at him as if he had been a wonder, and he had to steel himself not to kiss her, there and then, in the middle of the hallway and of her confused mind.

He didn't have to uphold the decision for long. It was she who, with a small jump, broke the distance between them and kissed him on the cheek, as stealthily as gently. She lingered there for a split second, mere inches from his blazing skin.

“Red really does suit you,” she murmured, before she turned on her heels and... almost slammed into the wall adjacent to the door.

“For the love of God, please go to sleep before you break a bone!” James winced, both from the acute blush and the terror, but Y/N’s bell-like laughter softened his nerves.

James Potter stayed there, standing in the middle of the hallway, staring at a stone alcove that shadows veiled and austere portraits grumbling ad infinitum, long enough for disheveled professors to pass him by and pins and needles to run down his legs. So long that he didn’t even notice a mischievous young boy, running late to class, as always, all wolfish smirk and too-pale hands, stop in his tracks and raise an eyebrow at his idiot of a friend, staring into nothing with a dumbstruck smile.

“Care to explain?” teased Sirius, grabbing his best friend by the shoulder and away from the common room entrance.

“Shut up.”

aye, @tripleyeeet thank you for the tag - I'm sorry I take forever to do stuff like this mostly, I'm just a loser with these kinds of things, sorry...

Astarion - not to anyone's surprise, lol. But he has to go first - this character has me in a chokehold and goddamn he changed quite a few things in my life - for one, I started writing again and posting fanfics online and now I'm here!

2. Kaz Brekker - I prefer the book version though. He's such a great character, he's such a snarky genius and such a bastard - I love him. And Six of Crows was also my first read by Leigh Bardugo and now she's one of my favourite authors!

3. Big Boss/Venom Snake - For some still unkown reason I got really into MGS5 when it came out and am still a big fan of the MGS and Kojima to this day (although I haven't even played all the games, lol).

4. Ellie Miller - Last of Us Part 1 I could only watch as Lets Plays but I got into TLOU Part 2 myself and I love the story and Ellie especially although my heart still hurts - and probably always will.

5. Loki - I got into online fandoms because of that fucker. So in a way he paved the way for Astarion and my content today, adhwqfhef.

6. Hannibal Lecter - Gosh dang, he's such a perfect villain. One of my absolute faves. I could write you an 15 page essay on why I think Hannibal is a spectualar show over all - and also Mads Mikkelsen is amazing!

7. D.Va - Back when I was biiiig into Overwatch she was one of my absolute favourites. Girl in a big mecha wrecking ass - sign me up!

8. Jinx - I've loved her from when she was introduced to League. I love her design and how crazy she is and was especially happy she was such a big part in Arcane.

9. Geralt of Rivia - White-haired men just are my thing apparently... I love his grumpy ass and how his heart is ultimately in the right place despite him acting like he's an asshole.

re. your tags on that amazing gabriel/v1 comic: i'm not a biblical scholar but i AM a religious studies scholar and let me tell you that all your interpretations & the questions you bring up are super bangin. i love this so much. i wish i could send this to my 40 yr old thesis advisor (who IS a biblical scholar and also loves video games) but i would have to explain the gay sex game to him so . maybe not. anyway rest assured that there are biblical scholars in the world who would eat this shit up

this is super validating honestly, & just the overall positive feedback on that comic-- not to get Personal but it's so much harder for me to post anything i put a lot of genuine thought/effort into as opposed to silly doodles because of the little voice in my head that says "what if everyone thinks this thing you poured a part of your soul into is stupid and bad forever". for me that gets amplified like tenfold with writing or anything where i'm actively trying to communicate something more complex. drawing something pretty is easy, but creating something that'll make an idea resonate with other people the same way it resonated with me when i'm not even sure it makes sense is HARD and i'm really glad i apparently managed to pull it off this time

so yeah thank you very much. i absolutely could not have predicted that buying the silly robot game a month ago would lead to someone saying "there are biblical scholars in the world who would eat that shit up" about something i drew but i'm not complaining. its scary but... maybe i'll start posting some writing on here sometimes <3

The vague premise of "City Haunts" is that the character we are following in this context is choosing to stay in Dead Club City, letting themselves succumb to the madness and vices that keeps them tied to the city. Which these eight characters on the blog have some sort of Vice/Virtue that they've succumbed to that they need to climb out of (or not, I promote character detractment instead of growth). ↪ the url is also a reference to a "haunt" on multiple levels - a) a place frequented by a specific person or group of people, b) to continually seek the company of, or c) to stay around or persist; for all the characters on this blog, I feel like each of them are going their own "haunt", whether they are doing the haunting themselves or they continue to linger / stagnante in a place they shouldn't. They're all haunting this so-called "Dead Club City" and they have to figure out what to do there... Plus, the url looks cool. FUN FACT ABOUT ME : I've been one of the top performers at my job for the past 2+ years which is apparently achievement. Sales is a scam. Don't do it kids.

Lemme see. This is long, sorry about that. I’m in a rambling mood. These are just the characters that came wandering into my noodle in no order - at least, that was intended.

1. Dorothea from Middlemarch (by George Eliot). She’s probably my fave character ever. I think in a mostly abstract way, she’s come nearest to mapping out how I perceive the feminine part of myself. She starts out so so idealistic - wanting to do something to change the world, to matter, but society has its own rules that eventually beats her down, but she’s so stoic, enduring, and self-denying, that her happy ending is earned… but then the epilogue is so melancholy so was it happy? and… I don’t know. There’s something in it all that I’ve never found a better version of.

2. My brain is on D names now lol so Daphnae from AC Odyssey. The more I think about her story, as little as we’re given of it, the more I find something tragic and fated in it, and then there’s the possibility of changing that fate, or embracing it. Something, something doomed by the narrative, unless…?

3. Demosthenes from my pdfs lol listen - ancient history RPF is a fandom (apparently) so this is valid. I have been down some serious rabbit holes with this man of late - I won’t even start on why or this will be an essay. I could also have put Thucydides in this position - but I’m on D names.

4. Daria. No seriously. I loved this show when I was a teen, and she’s honestly my spirit animal. It was my nickname because I was unfortunately very much like that. I adore her deadpan, acerbic remarks and many of them will live on in my brain forevermore. I wasn’t as witty btw - but the vibes were the same.

5. Hedwyn from the vg Pyre (woot! My brain releases me from the letter D!). I’ve played it several times now, and he’s my fave. Just a sweet guy - so sweet, you always want to free him first, but then you also very much wanna keep him with you - and sometimes I’ve been selfish enough to send everyone else instead. I also like Volfred a lot but that has everything up do with the VA 🙈

6. Alfie from Peaky Blinders. I have no excuses - the character is an unhinged maniac but Tom Hardy just brought something (a twinkling eye) to the role that makes him a very likeable, back-stabbing psychopath.

7. Caesar from HBO Rome. Ciaran Hinds has been a fave of mine since Persuasion - and I liked how he acted this part / how he was written. That’s all I’ll ever say about Caesar - character or historical figure. There are at least another half a dozen characters in this series I might’ve mentioned too. I must rewatch it one of these days.

8. Gannicus from Starz Spartacus. Dustin Clare is an old time favourite from waaaay back when I was persuaded to watch McLeod’s Daughters - really bingeable but quite trashy Aussie TV - sorry to any fans - but it really is. I so enjoyed his vibes and he brings all of that to Gannicus and it just works so well for the character. Pure cheekiness, and when he does this face 🥺 chefs kiss. Side note - I will pretty regularly say some variation of ‘my cock rages on’ about the most random stuff so - thanks to this character for that gem lol.

9. Johnny Spit from the movie Gettin Square. Yeah this is left field and I seriously doubt there’s a fandom for it - but what a character - quintessentially Australian deadbeat, (played by David Wenham). There’s a courtroom scene that kills me every time. I hope he got square, for good this time.

10. Kenny from Mad Men. I don’t even know how to explain it, I just want to protect him and he doesn’t even deserve it, and he wouldn’t have thanked me for it - maybe it was just the way everyone else was just an asshole about his writing. I want to know more about the short story about the egg. I could’ve picked almost any other character from this show though. They’re all so good/bad for their own reasons.

hi! I saw your post about the why episode title change why 11 scenes cut why lamp etc etc and I know some of it but not all, and I was hoping you could elaborate on spngate— if it’s not too much trouble— or point me in a direction where I can join you in the spn gate?

I feel ashamed for HOW LONG i let this ask just rot in my askbox (it's from january, apparently, now it's april. i thought maybe two weeks passed but NO. it was months. ANON I AM SO SO SO SO SORRY. I LOVE YOU WITH ALL MY HEART) but now with the power of this url and the wine i am currently sipping, let me give you the best, most thought-out answer that i possibly can.

I don't know how long you've been following/watching spn, so I won't get into real deep iceberg theories that go back to season 8 and jeremy carver, for the purpose of this essay answer I'll just stick to the year anno domini 2020, and will try to do my best to tell you what happened.

Okay, maybe 2019. So, in june 2019, when the first scripts and drafts for s15 are presented, these things happen: 1. apparently, according to Berens, the confession scene is the first thing that was written for season 15. 2. Jensen Ackles is sat down and asked if he would be okay with this. (question is asked: why would they ask jensen if all he does in this scene is look at cas, he doesn't say anything, he does not confess, it changes nothing about his character, etc.; if you put the real tjlc tinfoil hat on you'd ask hey , maybe they asked him if precisely that is okay, if he is okay with the fact dean is practically silenced here but that's Deep) 3. Jensen apparently is okay with that, because it happens.

also this thing happens around the same time: 1. they write the ending for the brothers, and no matter what version of the finale we're talking about, Dean dies 2. Jensen Ackles is Not Okay with this. he calls Kripke who then, in a call and/or email assures him it's a good ending (Jensen says that) and also very quickly after that Jensen is announced to play Soldier Boy in Kripke's The Boys. make of that what you want

They film, blah blah, march 2020, covid happens, they stop production right after they film the confession. Last episode to air is 15x13, last episode they film is 15x18, they almost have a plane crush when flying to vegas con, and then, a loooong break until august 2020. Now, from what we know, there were two versions of the finale - the pre-covid finale they were supposed to film if the filming schedule wasn't interrupted, and the finale that happened.

What was supposed to be in the Original Finale/Pre-Covid Finale, we still don't know exactly, but from what the cast said, there was supposed to be a big cast reunion, Harvelle's Roadhouse in Heaven, Kansas Band (why are they dead?) playing there after Dean gets there and so on.

Anyway. July 2020. Misha does a livestream with Michael Sheen (the SuperGood campaign) where he says he is going back to filming the last two episodes in a few weeks. he said it LIVE. it's on youtube. people analyze the background from Misha's livestreams and photos and conclude he is in Vacouver, where spn is filmed. He also says that he is going back filming in a few interviews. Also here.

August 2020. They go back to filming in august 2020 to film 15x19 and 15x20.

September 4th, 2020. ALL THEY FILM, for the whole DAY, is one scene. They usually film a few. They film one. Song of the day? The Night We Met.

Somewhere before the episodes starts to air again, Dabb says only 30% of the audience will like the finale. Anyway, everyone concludes, Misha is filming, destiel is more or less going canon, but everyone including bibros is sure Misha is filming and will be there for the finale.

Originally, "Despair" was called "The Truth".

Finale airs.

It feels shorter (apparently it's not) but it does have an additional ad break. For Walker. But it feels shorter because of the "carry on my wayward son" cover montage that lasts too long and later it's discovered thanks to scripts that dropped that there are ELEVEN scenes that were filmed,, but didn't make it to the episode. The script that drops is also very telling, where scenes are just [OMMITTED]. It was explained that they wanted to have actor there but they didn't want actors to quarantine for two weeks to film one or two scenes BUT then that's exactly what they did with Jim Beaver lmao.

So yeah. I also remember Misha at a con (DarkLight?) where, after asked about the original ending, he answers that the original ending was something that would be better explored in fanfiction anyway. Theory rises he filmed and was cut off the episode without his or Jensen's knowledge because Misha sat down his kids to watch the spn finale (which was the first episode they were supposed to watch ever, why would he do that if he's not there?) and then, CW SPN twitter posts a goodbye video that has everyone from the cast and their mother BUT MISHA AND JENSEN ARE NOT THERE. Jensens sexy silence starts.

THEN THE WILDEST THING HAPPENS.

November 25th, the Spanish Dub. 15x18 drops in Brazil and Dean says "and i you" to Cas, after he confesses. No "don't do this cas" but "and i you". Tumblr stops working for two hours, people on discords are screaming, no one knows whats happening, someone claims Jensen was called in September 2020 to record some adlibs? To record the muffled sobs Dean does while on the floor. Theory is supported by the fact that in the Bazil version? When Dean sits on the floor? The sound that plays are birds. Chirping birds. Sounds don't match, what was Dean saying while crying on the floor, question arises.

Everyone decides there was a Rogue Translator who managed to hide from The CW Sniper (who is the reason actors just dont tell us everything) and translated some kind of Original Script. Voice Actors are invited to a podcast where they debunk this saying that it was added because the translator felt this was the right response or something like that. Anyway they debunk the fact that there existed, at any time, a version of a script, that maybe was send to them, where Dean says I love you too. This was a wild night, no one slept.

And like. I could make this post longer, but I am planning to, one day, make a huge masterpost with real sources about that because honestly you could write a book about it.

But tl;dr spngate is a theory that misha did film for the last 2 episodes and the changes they made were truly last minute (september 2020), they were going for a canon destiel, possibly human!cas engame, dabb was always on our side, and it's based on stuff like jensen actively hating the ending to the point he made his prequel after 2 years of radio silence, 11 scenes just cut from the finale, misha saying he is going back filming, and people like mark pellegrino saying the last scene he filmed was with alex and misha. also the onion field. why lamp is the theory that cas is represented and symbolized by lamps throughout the show and when dean dances with a Lamp in a drug induced dream instead of, say, some kind of a lady he is actually thinking about cas.

also there are little things like when jensen at an online con before the finale says that oh yes i am wearing a grey flannel but tomorrow? who know it could be blue and green. and we all collectively lost our shit. like when he said he is most excited to "tackle" with cas in season 15. or that "dean has no taste, clearly". WHY WAS YOUR PERMISSION NEEDED JENSEN

About this Blog:

So, I originally started this blog so I could reblog all the Aldhelm posts I had been bookmarking over the past year and a half, keeping them all in one place since I did not want to post them on my main art blog. I also wanted to use it to post my fic, since I finally decided to take the risk and publish it for better or for worse, and also share all the screencaps I had been taking for drawing references (and just for my own pleasure let's be honest here).

I am rather late to this fandom, having binge watched this show in the middle of last year (2022) just as season 5 was released. It was sitting in my watchlist on Netflix for a few years, but I neglected it, thinking it was just another Vikings ripoff. Boy was I wrong. This show has really gotten to me in a way that no other TV show or movie has. I have never been so obsessed with a TV show or movie in my entire life.

But what compelled me to make an Aldhelm blog? Well, for starters, it had become apparent to me that, although many in this fandom like his character, very few consider him to be their favorite character, and far fewer still are obsessed about him in the same way that many are about Sihtric or Finan, for example. I still can't wrap my head around that, but maybe I am the weirdo, so oh well. I will create another post about why I love him so much at a later date if anyone cares to read it.

There are tons of blogs for the show in general and for other characters, and most of Uhtred's "pretty boys" get lots of love on here, but not so much for Aldhelm. I don't know if anyone else will really care about anything on this blog, but it is honestly not why I made it. This is more for my own sake than anyone else's, and if anyone else gets anything out of this that is great too.

@locke-n-k3y thanks for the tag :] ah hm tbh I feel like my answers for these might be a bit boring but let's see...

1. Are you named after anyone?

Yes! (Referring to my legal name- which I still use), I was named after a character from the soap opera "General Hospital" haha.

2. When was the last time you cried?

Last week lol- which was... The first time in a couple months? It was nice but not enough.

3. Do you have kids?

Absolutely not. Never lol.

4. What sports do you play/have you played?

Never did any sports outside of gym class! Not formally, anyways. I do workout (mostly strength/weight training) fairly regularly... But I don't think that really counts here lol. :0 Been thinking a lot lately about picking up boxing.

5. Do you use sarcasm?

Yup! irl I often go for a sort of deadpan delivery of my sarcasm- what I've learned from other people is that I'm a little too good at that (I sometimes say very ridiculous things very convincingly). I won't usually specify unprompted that I'm being sarcastic, but you're always welcome to ask. Not as sarcastic online in general, however.

6. What's the first thing you notice about people?

Irl? Hmm. Hard to say. Maybe: eyes, voice, posture.

Online? Typing/texting style I suppose!

7. What's you're eye color?

Dark brown 👁

8. Scary movies or happy endings?

Not mutually exclusive lol. But, happy endings. I don't "dislike" tragedies but I'm not actively drawn to them either.

9. Any talents?

HM. I mean obviously I have things I'm good at but I'm never quite sure what differentiates a "talent" from a "skill". I suppose a lot of friends have said something to the effect of me being "good at reading minds" haha- also "good at explaining things" which is debatable but sweet lol.

10. Where were you born?

Halifax! Which I feel fine saying cause I haven't lived there for a long time lol. A foggy fishing city that I miss even now.

11. What are your hobbies?

I guess a large chunk of what I do on this blog counts as hobbies? Writing (whether it's fiction or analysis or shitposts), drawing, audio clipping and editing apparently (though much of that I just keep to myself- same for drawing tbh). :] I've also gotten into making iron-on patches. Tabletop and video games for sure but... Neither as much as I'd like these days. I tend to collect a lot of things as well- most notably coins.

12. Do you have any pets?

I've had MANY pets of many different species- but currently just my cat Bok! I do tend to take care of my older sister's bunny a lot too though.

13. How tall are you?

5'4, which all my 6'0 friends love teasing me over 😒. I've been told that I "seem taller from the way [I] carry myself", however. (Despite everything, I'm actually fine with my height!)

14. Favorite subject in school?

When I was completing my bachelor's (in computer science) I was particularly drawn to graphics-related stuff! In highschool my fave was definitely drama haha (gee I miss it tbh).

15. What is your dream job?

I HAVE NO IDEA no idea and that's kind of my issue rn tbh. Plenty of things that seem interesting, but I don't think I'm the kind of person who could have the same job for my whole life, no matter how perfect it is. I'll presumably end up in something programming-related eventually, though it's not what I'm looking for now. OH OKAY ACTUALLY dream job? Probably doing video essays (or possibly let's plays) on Youtube haha.

Books I Read In September

45. The Oleander Sword, by Tasha Suri

Pre-ordered this, and I’m entirely happy with what I got. I mean it’s got intrigue and angst and the literal and metaphorical selling of souls and lesbians and eldritch horrors and war crimes, what’s not to love?

But really, I’m pretty sure I already made the joke, but SFF lesbians and weird power dynamics around fealty and martyrdom sure are a pair, huh? (Or maybe that’s just a random bit of selection bias in the books I read/see talked about, but eh. I should catch up on Montress.)

Anyway, Malini is a joy to read, and the Yaksha are absolutely gorgeous and come across as rather believably alien, though I really do wish they weren’t quite so straightforwardly malevolent, and the temple/palace intrigues with whatever the asshole emperor’s name was and his priests was great. Can’t wait for book 3.

46. None the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

My other pre-ordered book of the year. And look, I am largely outsourcing my opinions on this book to the ongoing 24/7 symposium digging into every bit of symbolism and possible reference in these things going on here in the tag. But, like, book good. 

Also Pal and Cam, my beloveds. And Nona is adorable. 

I need to go scream in the wilderness a bit again.

47. The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid

This month’s attempt to acquire some Culture, via what was apparently the most influential book of 2007 (literally recommended to me because a coworker’s book club is doing it). 

But no, this was good! Very much of it’s time, though less in a ‘dated in a bad way’ way, and more in a ‘future generations of college students will get assigned this and told to write an essay about the cultural fallout of the War On Terror.’ 

It really, really committed to the whole ‘life story told in a conversation over dinner’ framing device, to a degree that books basically never do - the prose of the whole thing still felt conversational and like it could actually be said by one person to another. The constant asides to the cuisine being served and the order of the courses and everything did eventually start to grate, though. 

The big central twist is, well, barely a twist - except that the title gives you a very definite idea of where the protagonist’s arc is going to end up that you bring with you into the book. Still, really well done.

I’m surprised you don’t see the janissarya analogy made more often in modern polemic. Shoe doesn’t exactly fit, but close enough that you’d think it’d get some use.

48. Exit Strategy by Martha Wells

I really do adore Murderbot stories. They’re just perfectly sized for a lazy afternoon or two of reading, they’ve got the plot structure of a tightly edited 40-minute tv episode, and they’re just great fun comfort reads. Perfect book pringles. (Also Murderbot is one of the greatest protagonists of all time).

This one in particular would have honestly worked pretty well as a finale to the series? Or, since it clearly isn’t, I guess ‘works as a season finale’ is the better way to put it? It resolves the central underlying plot thread that’s been running through the books so far quite nicely, anyway. 

I totally admit that aside from Murderbot only, like, four characters have made a sufficient impression that I can reliably identify them by just their names, though. 

49. Elder Race by Adrian Tchaikovsky 

Hey, I finally finished the last Hugo nominee! Now to start feeling properly guilty about failing to answer that ask about my ranking/opinions from a month ago. 

But no, this was good. The only Tchaikovsky I’d read before was Children of Time/Ruin, so this was definitely a change of pace (obvious similarities in setting aside). The whole central conceit of ‘fantasy setting is actually the result of an apocalypse destroying a technologically advanced civilization and the descendents of the survivors viewing the remnants as magical relics and sorcery’ is so thoroughly cliche I think people just stopped writing it for a couple decades, but the execution is really well done. 

Nyr and Lynette are both fun POVs, anyway, and I absolutely adore anything that has multiple POVs seeing/taking part in the same events and interpreting them wildly differently. The one chapter that had two columns with Nyr providing exposition on one side and what Lynette&co actually understood him as saying on the other was great. 

Tchaikovsky also did a really excellent job of capturing the whole horror and grief and ennui of being the Last Of Your Kind better than I usually see, and also saying Fuck the Prime Directive, which is always appreciated. 

Also incredibly endearing that Nyr’s whole transhuman civilization gave themselves giant badass horns and then collectively decided to pretend it was for pragmatic utilitarian reasons. 

50. Fugitive Telemetry by Martha Wells

Because it’s 2 murder 2 bot month, I guess (but no all my holds on these really did just come in at once).

So apparently this was actually written after the novel, which I only found out after finishing it, but chronologically it seems to have taken place before? Which conveniently means I didn’t accidentally ruin any big twists for myself.  

Anyway, this was a fun detective story sort of thing. Murderbot being continuously annoyed at how much harder the lack of a dystopian panopticon made their job was a great running gag.

51. The Thousand Eyes by A. K. Larkwood 

Because it’s magical lesbians month, I guess. 

But no, this was a fun read. The whole setting and tone were very, hmm, D&D? Like a real mixture of super fantastical elements and generic fantasy things given different names (there are elves, and orcs, and for some reason specifically yuan-ti) and then the vision of society and the economics and the mindset and vocabulary of everyone who hasn’t been asleep in a ditch for ten thousand years is just incredibly modern. Not a complaint, it’s just very much a thing. 

My actual complaint is that this was like four different discrete stories stacked on top of each other and put into a compactor until they all fit in one book. There were a lot of times where I was kind of left feeling that Larkwood was relying on me knowing how a given story/character arc goes so she could just skip through the high points and then resolve it without necessarily building it up beforehand. 

(I also have a perpetual dislike for the plot beat of ‘oh no, the abusive cult who raised you was just doing their religion wrong. We’ve got a direct line to your/their god and he’s actually a great guy!’)

Interesting how minor a character Csorwe is in this one compared to Unspoken Name, really, but Shuthmili and Tal are both incredibly fun POVs so can’t say I really mind. Tsundere dragon goddess of betrayal and destruction was also a great time.

1. Are you named after anyone? Yeah, my second name comes from my great grandmother who was still alive when I was born (though she died when I was around 1) and my third one comes from my godmother!

2. When was the last time you cried? It was either Monday the second October or somewhere later during that week. I did cry on monday, not sure about the rest of the week, I was not in a good head space then.

3. Do you have kids? Nope!

4. What sports do you play/have you played? Oh that's gonna be a funny list: Ballet (I was very young, didn't do it v long thanks to my mum), soccer/Fußball (also not that long), swimming (actually did that for a while competitve), standard dance, judo, aikido, I tried capoera (but being fat didn't help with trying to do the movements slowly - my center of gravity is different), currently I'm trying to somehow get into the shape for parcour

And you can crochet/knit or read while you're there but if you want to take what you crocheted/knitted/read with you you would need to pay for the yarn/book. And. Well. There's been a lot of discussion about why Kate might think Anthony is still marrying her out of Obligation even after well...

And let's take a look shall we, Let's take a look at what's really happening to Kate during this scene because Simone Ashley's performance is so nuanced and beautiful, apparently I write essays on it now.

So this Kate, we know has been repressing what she wants since her father died, and if you wanna think about why she's done that and why she feels this responsibility I have a small (large) treatise on her relationship with Mary that sheds a bit of light on it.

Anthony, less than 24 hours before this, held her so close, and as good as admitted that he felt something, asked her to admit that she felt something too, asked her to deny what was between tham, and yes she didn't say what she felt, because Daphne walked in and she was I think still very confused about it, but look at it. Look at the way she leans her head against his and responds to his touch.

I wanna talk a little about Why this scene has me in such a chokehold. Why it's so important that it does come at the very end.

We're going under the cut because this is probably going to get long

Now if any of you have read any of my AUs you know that most every one of them has a scene like this. Offside most of all. I love Mary and kate's relationship and it's my absolute favourite Parent-child relationship in the Bridgerton series. Because they are mother and daughter by choice.

But with that choice comes the assumption or the feeling that one day, one day, one of them could choose not to have this relationship. Especially for Kate who, even in the book, craves belonging to something. Even though she keeps her emotions so tightly guarded, she wants to desperately to be loved.

And Mary loves her. Kate knows there's no difference in the way Mary treats her and Edwina, but there's a tiny voice in the back of her head that says If she chose to love you she could choose not to so easily. It's why we see this look on her face when Mary starts defending them all

1. Are you named after anyone?

Nope! My mom wanted a name that sounded good in both English and Spanish. She looked at a map for inspiration and saw the Sierra Madre Occidental range in Mexico and the Sierra Nevada range in California and went "aha!"

Sierra has never been a super popular name, at least not spelled my way, and she'd never heard it before, so it was perfect! Imagine her dismay when a few years later we discovered another Sierra, one year older, living a couple streets over in our tiny neighborhood. I also went to high school with one other Sierra. The mid-nineties was "Sierra's" time to shine, apparently.

2. When was the last time you cried?

Yesterday

3. Do you have kids?

Nope

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

I’ve recently realized I don’t use it as often as I think I do, but I think it’s still pretty often.

5. What’s the first thing you notice about people?

I think it’s their expression, particularly if they are smiling or not. If they are, what kind of smile is it? Is it telling me they don’t want to be here/don’t want to be talking to me? If they aren’t, do they look upset/frustrated or just busy or distracted?

6. What’s your eye color?

I think I’ve settled on grey. It changes drastically depending on what I’m wearing. Sometimes I look and they’re super blue. Other times I’m like wow those are so obviously green. Most of the time I’m like “wtf is this color?” My mom used to say they were “blue, like the ocean,” but I think we need to specify that it’s the ocean during a storm. A little grey, a little green, a little blue. Depends on which ocean and which storm.

7. Scary movie or happy endings?

Happy endings! I like some scary movies, but really I’m all about a happy ending.

8. Any special talents?

Ummmmm…. Mr. Brilla says my special talent is dropping stuff I had a solid hold on a second ago.

I’m a hobby collector. I try stuff and drop them all the time. I lean toward crafty or creative hobbies, like embroidery and cross stitch, sewing, drawing, writing, painting minis. I also love to dance (social and ballroom— partner dances) and sing (by myself in the car/shower…), and read.

11. Do you have any pets?

A chihuahua mix (mostly chihuahua) named Dulce!

12. What sports do you play/have you played?

I played soccer for 2 seasons when I was 7 because I liked being on a team and wearing a uniform, but I hated practice and games and, you know, playing soccer. I also tried gymnastics for a day and cried. I’ve never been a sports kid.

I do social dancing now, which still ain’t competitive, but it could be, ya know?

5’2”

14. Favorite subject at school?

(American) schools try really hard to make interesting stuff really boring and hard. I think my favorite was Spanish because I already knew quite a bit and already loved the language and was very good at it from the start. It was easy and I got to learn more about something I already loved.

If school were better, I would have loved more subjects because I love learning, in general. I find history and social studies and cultural studies all absolutely fascinating. I also find sciences really interesting, as well, but the classes were so rough in school that they were never a favorite subject. Math had its moments, too, but again… not always the greatest teachers or curriculum. I love reading and was very good at essays, so English/lit were ok, but the books were soooo hit or miss for me.

15. Dream job?

My dream job would be part-time teaching a high school Computer Science class (and would throw in Spanish I, too!) and part-time software engineer at some sort of “tech-for-good” company working in something worthwhile and/or cool.

Honestly is anyone surprised? I’m not saying this list is in order, but I love his character so much. The balance of feminine and masculine, the trauma without it being his only personality trait, the nuance is just superb writing (and acting) that I’ve never seen in media before.

Plus BG3 has got me back on tumblr, drawing for pleasure again, and I’ve made a bunch of wonderful friends - so I have a lot to thank the pasty elf for.

2.) Renee Walker from 24

Okay so this is a super niche one but Renee Walker got me through some of my darkest teenage years. Whilst I don’t agree with everything in 24, I love her character (another complex character with trauma), I love Annie Wersching (Gods rest her soul), and this character is the first I think of when someone says ‘favourites’.

3.) Ahsoka Tano from Star Wars

I know the point of this post is characters I love, but omg do I love Ahsoka! Her development is some top tier writing, and she’s the first strong female lead I ever remember recognising in Star Wars.

4.) Dr James Wilson from House MD

I relate to Wilson more than I should. He cares so much it gets him hurt, he’s the eternal optimist, and, he sees the good in people even when it’s not there. He’s also self sacrificing, relentless, and occasionally, a complete dumbass. (I’m also in love with Robert Sean Leonard so that definitely helps).

5.) Chin Ho Kelly from Hawaii Five O

I don’t have much to say about this one. He’s cool. He rides a motorcycle and has a shotgun. Daniel Dae Kim is gorgeous. Chin Ho is just a cool guy. (He’s also complex but I fear I am starting to sound like a broken record).

6.) Amy Santiago from Brooklyn Nine Nine

This is another case of James Wilson. I have changed a lot since then but mannn if I wasn’t an Amy in University! (Wanted to be a Rosa, was absolutely an Amy) Honestly though, it was nice to see a Type A, more than likely neurodivergent, but still strong and respected female lead. She is rarely the butt of the joke and I appreciate that about B99.

7.) Anna from Frozen

I know this makes me look like a Disney Adult but it’s so nice to see a kind, emotionally available, independent woman, in a loving and equal relationship, in popular media. She also deals with heavy grief in a way that both hurts and heals me.

8.) Ice Bear from We Bare Bears

I love this show. It is my background comfort show and Ice Bear is just the best. Nothing more to it than that.

9.) Sara Lance from Arrow

Okay so I ran a Thea Queen fan account when I was a teen, but Sara Lance was the first queer woman I ever saw on TV and it changed my life. I told my friends about my girlfriend (at the time) because of her. She made me feel seen when there was very little queer pop culture rep.

10.) Leonard Snart from The Flash

Ending in a cyclical manner - with a white haired, morally grey, traumatised, soft-for-the-right-person, queer thief. I am a woman of simple, and apparently identical tastes.

1. are you named after anyone?

my deadname is probably inspired by some french royalty. i did nickname myself after a videogame protagonist though, even though i don't use that nickname much any more

wait actually i'm vaguely remembering smth abt my mom supposedly naming myself after a local actress. that works too if that's true

2. when was the last time you cried?

very recently because i was very sad. but also it's easy for me to cry bc of stuff i watch. i teared up during three different moments while watching the new puss in boots movie

3. do you have kids?

no. probably never. it's a very big responsibility

4. do you use sarcasm a lot?

not a lot, just sometimes. usually just to be funny or when i'm ranting to someone abt an anecdote in private. i like making it apparent when i do though. "i DONT use sarcasm at all NOT using it right now. what makes you say that"

5. what sports do you play/have you played?

recently competed in badminton doubles!! with strangers i met like minutes before the matches started haha. we were short on people. i'm not Very Good at any particular sport but i'll play most things for fun. i miss doing frisbee class

6. what's the first thing you notice about other people?

i'm always So Scareds of people so it's hard to answer this question... probably the way they speak? i don't have to be looking at people to notice that

almost black, deep brown thangs

schmaltz forever

9. any special talents?

i can follow sheet music on the spot (just give me the pitch and i'm good) and i'm good at bullshitting melodies i've never sang before

born and raised and still here in the philippines

11. what are your hobbies?

watching shows and movies and getting incredibly emotionally attached to fictional characters and thinking about them too hard is my #1 hobby. aside from that i like listening to video essays/podcasts, drawing, writing... i also like walking. once i learn how to ride a bike i'd like to do that regularly too

i need more physical crafty hobbies, i just don't have the space/space management skills to do them rn... i used to do a lot of paper crafting as a kid

12. do you have any pets?

toothless is a... tuxedo cat? he's technically my grandpa's but i consider him my little guy too

they're my cousins' but i also live with two dogs :) toffee (middle) who is a very bitey puppy. he's aspin but he probably has some fancy breed in his blood or smn bc his fur is very soft. and betsy (right, jailed for crimes. she doesn't mind) is a shih tzu and they've had her for a few years now C:

13. how tall are you?

i hate checking my height cz i might shrink again. probably around 5'6"

14. favorite subject in school?

i loved math and science in grade school. in high school i enjoyed lit a lot more. pending answer for college lol

15. dream job?

my cousin once brought up the idea of us owning a bar/cafe/resto thing together. it would be nice!
