Expanding a thought from a conversation this morning:

In general, I think "Is X out-of-character?" is not a terribly useful question for a writer. It shuts down possibility, and interesting directions you could take a character.

A better question, I believe, is "What would it take for Character to do X?" What extremity would she find herself in, where X starts to look like a good idea? What loyalties or fears leave him with X as his only option? THAT'S where a potentially interesting story lies.

In practice, I find that you can often justify much more from a character than you initially dreamed you could: some of my best stories come from "What might drive Character to do [thing he would never do]?" As long as you make it clear to the reader what the hell pushed your character to this point, you've got the seed of a compelling story on your hands.

Here follows a non-exhaustive list of major events in Meketi history and Serot's many lifetimes. This will be updated as I continue to develop ideas. Years are given in Dale Reckoning for ease of reference.

-493 DR — The city-state of Tej is founded where the Eruti River meets the Great Sea

-430 — A series of disastrous wars destroys Tej; the capital moves to Nubt

-407 — Soshe begins spreading Her word in Zakhara

-392 — Soshe is gone in a blaze of sunfire; Semre slays their twin and becomes Monarch; begins a period of expansion that creates Meket; also begins building the Ribcage

-351 — Serot is born

-347 — The Beetle Death sweeps Meket

-343 — Serot is apprenticed to an old family friend and ghul lord

-335 — Serot perfects the technique to control kheprer

-332 — Beginning of Serot's relationship with Refhremmit; they begin gathering Meket's ghul lord to drive back to kheprer

-325 — Official end of the Beetle Death, though full recovery takes longer; Serot is appointed Spiritual Advisor to the Monarch of Meket; the Anactaci are founded soon after with Serot as the first Hegemon; the City of Eternity is founded

-315 — Serot has a falling out with Monarch Meresankh; he is removed from the position of Spiritual Advisor, though he remains Hegemon of the Anactaci

-308 — Monarch Meresankh attempts to take control of the Plane of Death but is lost instead; Monarch Yerem succeeds them; Serot soon after entwines himself entirely with Refhremmit and dies for the first time

129 — Monarch Khemiftreby is rumored to have founded the Monarch's Veil

400 — Meket along with many of its neighbors is conquered by the newly formed Yikarian Empire; the Monarch and their immediate family are sacrificed to the Faceless God; the rest of the royal family is kept under the Yikarian thumb with one member sacrificed each year

475 — Serot is reborn as the shepherdess, Talushem

490 — Talushem is taken prisoner due to her family's repeated inability to pay taxes; meant to be sacrificed alongside Hanumtept (member of the royal family) but Refhremmit intervenes; the two go into hiding and a rebellion forms around them

502 — Meket and their allies succeed in throwing off the yolk of Yikarian rule; Hanumtept is crowned Monarch of Meket; Talushem remains their general and right hand

662 — Rahaz University is founded in the city-state of Rahaz and is the first university on the continent

767 — A young man finds the teachings of the Loregiver and spreads them across Zakhara, seeking to unite the continent under his banner; he will become the first Grand Caliph; this likewise a period of great expansion for Meket as those who do not wish to submit to the Grand Caliph seek alliance or merger with them instead

1200 — Serot is reborn as Ahe, a hardline member of the Nra Myetme

1358 — The Godswar strikes Toril; massive upswing in Soshist conversions as their priesthood is the only one unaffected and the existence of an overgod is confirmed; Serot is reborn as Neheb

1385 — The advent of the Spellplague; the Planes of Death and Life fall into the Elemental Chaos, causing the powers of the Manthu and Anactaci to go wild

1388 — Neheb is sacrificed to seal the cities of eternity; Refhremmit removes their favor from Meket, refusing to answer the Anactaci or take guardianship of new houses of eternity.

1397 — The ruling family is usurped by a gnomish House; Monarch Thanese is crowned

1486 — The beginning and end of the Daylily War with the Yikarian Empire; Claims a portion of the coastland from Sun's Eye Province, appointing an ally from the Isle of Gardens its governor

1490 — Serot is reborn as himself on the continent of Faerûn albeit with a flawed memory; seeks answers about himself

1492 (flexible) — Serot helps destroy the Elder Brain and thwart the Absolute Crisis; with his memories almost fully recovered, he begins the return journey to Meket
