poetry since writing is how i keep myself from going completely insane

was I like a new puppy, a new toy, a perfect girl, a good boy?

did the novelty wear off and reveal my imperfections?

yeah I bark and whine, but can't you see why? I love you—I wanted you to hear it. did you take it as mere jabber? I waited like a dog, excited and thrilled waiting for its owner to show up, unaware his spot in her heart would be left chilled.

the days went by, I sat there, tail still wagging. people told me to give up, but I stayed waiting. part of me will always wait— your voice my leash, able to control me in seconds. however his leash isn’t as soft and gentle as I once thought. maybe because it was new and pretty, I hadn’t had one for a while.

the longer it stays on, the more it rubs into my body, the more it hurts, the more it makes me groan, the more it digs into my bones. wounds can’t heal if you don’t leave them alone.

i liked my pretty collar—it was a gift from you. but you don’t seem to care and threw out the key. people say the collar is pointless now, but I kept it on. one cruel reminder however cut me like a knife: “if she trusts you, why keep you bound in strife? she knew you wouldn’t run, but was that not enough?”

i am enough—she said I was perfect. maybe she preferred to know I would always stay close. she trusted me but feared I might be taken. but if this were true, why would she have left me?

she found a new pet, gave them a pretty collar too. i’m sitting tied to a fence, watching it all. every now and then, she stops by, gives me a treat, a pat on the head, says it will all be fine—that one day, she’ll pick me up and we’ll go for a walk, again.

I recently noticed the knot came undone. I’ve regained my ability to run. but I said I was a good girl and would always stay. she said she’d come back for me one day. as time goes on, weeks became months.

I soon noticed her new pet always on the run, more playful and energetic. my owner seems happier, less apologetic. I hope they are happy—I truly do, but why leave me with hope so false and true? was I a fool, or just a pawn in your game? did I misread your signs, or should I still remain? is there a chance you’ll come back, or am I left to my fate?

I want to stay a good girl for you, but am I even in your thoughts, are they true? I sit and wait, wounds raw, eyes wet, but I won’t give up hope, or accept defeat just yet. my peers say you don’t care, but I know you do— maybe just not as much as I care for you.
