Eunhae analyses - why they are real - part 1

For everything that I have typed below, any extra opinions that I would like to add would be in italics like this, while the translations from the original authors would be in normal fonts.

For non-Eunhae shippers, you can just leave this page. No one forces you to read. We have our freedom to believe what we think, you also have the freedom to believe what you think. We don't mind your business, so you also don't have to mind our business. Thank you.

Firstly, I would like to explain why this ship is not a business relationship. Hence, I am translating this article to explain it in detail about it. The author of the article is studying psychology so for some future articles by this author, you may see her talking about some professional terms, and even from a psychological point of view to explain why romance exists in their relationship.

And some of the short forms that we will often be using. he=happy ending and be=bad ending for a ship. In Chinese, these words are used quite interestingly as both adjectives and nouns, so I am trying to preserve the original meaning of the author below.

Let me state my stance clearly first. I believe firmly that there is a romantic relationship between them. I started to ship them because I came across the video where they hugged each other when they got released from the military without even knowing who they are. I cried at the moment when they hugged each other. The empathy of humans only exists when authentic emotions are expressed. At least for me, as I have asked myself, I cannot put on a drama to pretend that I am that close with a same-sex friend for over 10 years. Even my most unforgettable romantic relationship was not even having the love half as deep as theirs. I was also afraid at first in the first real-life couple that I shipped, which I even tried to deceive myself that they are be. Yet I couldn't convince myself of this. The fact that finding evidence to prove that they are just brothers is just wrong itself. Most of the scenes claim that they are be are just negligible when we compare them with the sweet moments between them. We do not have to find these sorts of so-called proofs, which are just the tip of the iceberg when we have many more meaningful pieces of evidence to prove that they are indeed having a romantic relationship.

When I was tidying up the pieces of evidence in this article, I was getting pretty mad with how those be cuts are edited in a way that did not reflect the whole situation. Many of the sweet moments that make me ship them are from the moments that not many would be aware of in some variety shows or that the camera did not intend to catch, as these are the moments that would really touch our hearts deeply. If you want to understand Eunhae deeply, I would recommend you to go through the whole material once. You would definitely have a different feeling from just reading those cuts.

Those be scenes are already defined as be, so I can only find loopholes in them. I cannot completely disprove them and it may seem a bit subjective as well. You can just judge it by yourself rationally. Many of the be cuts are incomplete and intend to mislead everyone. I will try to complement the scenes before and after the cuts and also the background. You can judge the authenticity yourself.

There is an important point I would you all to remember throughout the article.

Explicitly telling everyone that they are in a relationship is not the only way of showing that they are he.

I don't talk about their sexual orientation, as I think that the reason they are moved by each other, is not that the other is of the same sex as themselves, but because the other is important to them and is outstanding in their eyes. However, if they are telling everyone explicitly that they are in a relationship, they would be labeled with the word 'gay' forever. It also means that they need to leave the job that they love. It is indeed much scarier that what everyone can imagine.

They are artists who are still working. They are public figures. They are living in a place that is highly sensitive to this. They have other members that would relate with in terms of interests. They have family and friends that are exposed to the views and opinions of the general public. They have fans who are having them as role models. Telling everyone explicitly is meaning they are being irresponsible to all these.

So basically it is almost impossible for them to tell everyone they are in a relationship. We cannot judge the nature of their relationship due to this.

Hence, for all the questions and comments asking about the nature of their relationship, they can only deny themselves having a romantic relationship. This is irrelevant to them being be.

Also, they attempted to probe into our feelings towards their relationships and express their relationships in an implicit way (with reference to E02) (I will translate this a bit later). The best situation is that we are having an unspoken agreement with them. We don't ask them further, and they also do not deny this fact. Let us protect the world that only belongs to them, and let them have sufficient courage and power to face their own feelings. This would be the best scenario.

Their jobs are idols, not to give a drama to people who ship them.

Real relationships would not be used for business purposes. Be and commercialised relationships would not appear together.

When searching for the origin of those be scenes, I was pretty angry, as these are also from the interviews and shows during their promotion period (especially in Taiwan).

They are running the promotion with the songs that they produced with their sweat and tears. The songs that they wish to be recognised by others. The shows were only using the relationships between them to stir up hot topics and possibly controversies while neglecting the songs themselves. I guess no one would be happy with this. The best solution for them is to shift the attention towards their song and avoid talking about anything related to their relationships.

Eunhae started from a subunit that did not even have a name, to now they have passed their 10th anniversary. I believe everyone can see how much effort each of them has put into D&E. If they were using their relationships as a means to promote their songs, their relationship would have completely distorted. Certainly, they want everyone to appreciate their songs, and hence like them, but not aiming to see their interactions and hence knowing their songs.

E02 those scenes are from their personal vlogs and live with fans, which are situations that which they would be relatively more relaxed, while those be scenes are from interviews and shows with bad intentions. We can just take what they said in such scenarios lightly. More often, they are just defending and protecting themselves.

Someone said that they are being close in vlogs and lives for business purposes, while in those interviews people are claiming they are be, but these two scenarios can never coexist. If they are be, they do not have to show how close they are in private. If they commercialise their relationships, they would not shift the topic during their interviews. Shows can be edited and with components specially designed to showcase something intentionally, but these are not necessary for lives and vlogs. If they can choose, of course they would be showing a more real side of them.

Understanding them through their YouTube and group variety shows (e.g. SJ returns, Suju TV) where they are more real and relaxed would be more convincing.

Do not be a snowflake

The fact that you ship a same-sex couple already means that you cannot ask them to show much stuff to the public. Eunhae is already among the top when compared with other ships. In many hidden moments they attempted to show their relationships, and often give us many sweet scenes to ship them hard. That many sweet moments already, aren't these enough? When watching the minimal moments that they may be be and then you start suspecting them yourselves. Come on. If you are not willing to believe that they are real, no matter how many sweet moments they are having, it would still be useless for you. If you are moved by their relationships, why not just believe them?

In some Taiwan variety shows, they have spoken a few times 'We are not in a romantic relationship. Don't be like this.'

I don't really want to talk about the time that they were in Taiwan. The only feeling was that these shows really disrespect them a lot. All these questions are too direct and made them uncomfortable. They were not getting angry about them is already pretty impressive.

Their openness towards LGBTQ is not really the case that they are respecting and supporting it from their heart. Instead, they are pretending to be open about it so that they can get more discussions. Intentionally designing some couple components in shows for them to do, directly asking them about homosexual love so as to ask about their personal lives. They were going to these Taiwanese shows during their promotion periods. These shows did not ask about their songs but used such ways to stir up topics about them. If they were slightly not careful enough, their words would be infinitely magnified. I advise everyone can just skip those Taiwanese shows about them and take the words they expressed there lightly.

Those so-called be interviews also have sweet moments. That's why again, just take them lightly.

These materials I do not even want to explain. I really feel so furious with these shows. They are just promoting their songs. Hence all the personal topics are redirected to the songs by them.

I am really quite speechless about this interview. The host was only aiming to listen to their personal lives. Many cuts used this capture to say they are be, but in the whole interview, apart from this, most other scenes are pretty sweet. (As a HKer, I feel really sorry that a show from my place is doing something like this to them...)

Such a way to hold their hands and explain, and how they used their eyesight to keep hinting the MC to go to the next segment, obviously, they really wanted to shift the topic.

I believe everyone knows how they hold their hand in normal times. They did not even look into each other's eyes when they hold their hands. They just kept talking to the MC. From their actions and facial expressions, they just wanted to convince the MC.

Give everyone another cut of the same interview. Which of them was talking about their own stories, and which of them was cuing the next segment, I guess it is really obvious to see.

They can feel whether the MC is having a bad intention, so they will try to change the topic as soon as possible. The facial expressions and actions when they are really talking about their own stories are really different.

In this live with so many famous scenes, Kyuhyun said on the phone that D&E did not contact often behind the camera, which is interpreted as the other member spilling the truths about them. Yet if you try to watch the whole live, you would realise that they were just joking, and even looks like that Kyuhyun is being salty lol.

When Lee Hyukjae said that there is an athlete next to him, Kyuhyun immediately guessed that it is Lee Donghae correctly.

Here Hyukjae was more like boasting to Kyuhyun when talking about Donghae, and Kyuhyun's response was pretty salty as well lolll.

The first point is that Eunhae did not look into each other's eyes due to the words of Kyuhyun, which means that they did not even need to discuss in order to give a response. Not only does it mean that they know Kyuhyun was just joking, but also it means that they have sufficient confidence in each other.

These are said by Donghae. The whole time they did not look at each other, and they both were laughing happily.

Donghae did not need to look at Hyukjae when speaking this because he knows that Hyukjae would not take it seriously. Both of them knows that it is a joke.

Hyukjae also did not have any emotional fluctuations. It is just a common way to joke with their other members for them. They don't need to check on the reactions of the others as they trust in each other. They know where the heart of the other belongs, so they did not need to suspect each other because of jokes like this.

A point that I want to say is that, with reference to my analysis in E06 (another article that I will translate later, which is an extremely long analysis of Lee Hyukjae's personality from MBTI), Lee Hyukjae is the type of person that is often very meticulous but would be firm to his choice once the decision is made.

Even though Lee Donghae is pretty pure and direct, he is protected quite well. The reason that Donghae does not often go on variety shows, is not that he isn't good at it. Instead, he made some nice effects on variety shows. Rather it is that he didn't know those hidden rules in variety shows, which you need to adjust your tones, words, and intentions when facing people with a variety of intentions. Hence, if there are no other members to speak for him, it may be likely for him to speak something that can be easily misinterpreted.

In all my analyses, the period in the military is a turning point for them. After the enlistment, all the actions to hide the relationships are by Donghae, while all the actions to implicitly reveal their relationships are by Hyukjae.

Why Donghae is setting back now, when he was pretty direct before?

After the military, Hyukjae is really getting more courageous towards their relationships.

The show was already meant to stop originally. Both of their mics were already turned off with the ending song playing. Donghae asked to turn on the mic all of a sudden after reading the iPad for a while and then read aloud this comment. He intentionally brought up this comment is likely that he wanted to hide their relationships, but Hyukjae did not deny it.

And lastly this part Hyukjae was replying with a stern face, not knowing it is towards the staff or any other person, while Donghae was still looking scared and confused.

Actually, I don't really have a good feeling towards to production team of Danny show. Some of the segments are using the popularity of the ship too much, but since there are not many activities for them due to COVID, I still watch this show occasionally.

During the show, they don't read the comments very often. On one hand, there are too many comments to be read. On the other hand, there may be too many comments irrelevant to the show that may affect their mood.

This comment was brought up by Donghae when the show had already been meant to end. He didn't discuss with others on this topic. They usually do not bring up comments like this.

Perhaps they were having too many comments like this, which was possibly affecting their normal duties, so Donghae wanted to explain it, trying to suppress comments like this, yet the reaction of Hyukjae did catch Donghae off guard. I guess Hyukjae also didn't want things like this to sway his thoughts, so Hyukjae did not follow Donghae to deny it, and expressed their needs for privacy.

Their show also has commercial segments and guests, which means there are non-shippers that would be watching. It is really quite disturbing for them to have questions asking about their relationships every time, yet Hyukjae did not mean to deny it.

He was reading the comments from fans again. A point to note is that the staff intentionally chose the questions out for Donghae already and projected them to the screen, not chosen by Donghae. It is the staff who chose these for him to answer.

(I really want to scold the staff of the production team again. They are not doing something intentional like this as an isolated case to note.)

Take a look at this pretty extreme reaction from Donghae, and compare it with how he usually talks, you will realise that it is very obvious when Donghae tries to tell lies. Both his facial expressions and actions are very unnatural. Let me don't delve further into this, but instead let's see how sweet when he called Hyukjae in the same episode.

In the program of Lee Soogeun, Hyukjae asked about marriage. Many people thought it is meaning be. Firstly I need to state that they aim to promote their songs and D&E through the program. They should have discussed about what they would be asking with the program staff beforehand.

Compare it with the facial expressions of Donghae before the military. See how reluctant were them to discuss how this topic. As they were still insecure about their relationships, anything that Hyukjae spoke of would be taken seriously by Donghae. You can see Donghae obviously looks miserable here.

And then look at this recent interview. Donghae looks like he knows what will be spoken by Hyukjae. He didn't try to evade any eye contact.

Hyukjae asks who you want the children to be like when talking about the topic of children.

In fact, I don't think that you need to treat the discussions of marriage and children as be. They cannot escape from questions like this. It is the need of their work. What makes it important is how they answer it.

Donghae did not talk about who he wanted the children to be like. He only said that he wanted his son to be mischievous while being kind-hearted. Dating rumours

Lee Donghae did not have any certain dating rumours, while Hyukjae it was just about IU and Irene.

I think it is normal for them to have dating experiences before. It is also normal for them to have girlfriends before. It is impossible for them to be certain that they would be having a special relationship with each other. Apparently, it needs time and after experiencing some incidents for them to develop into a relationship like now.

They are not homosexual! NOT HOMOSEXUAL! They do not only have people of same-sex.

Having girlfriend and loving each other is not mutually exclusive.

Loving a person is irrelevant to the sex!!!!!

IU incident was too long ago. I don't want to discuss it again. Hyukjae clarified the rumours already. It is up to you to believe or not. Anyway, this topic is not something that we would like to bring up again. During Hyukjae's lowest point due to this incident, it was Donghae who stood by him and supported him. When everyone was attacking him, it was Donghae who tweeted multiple times to support him, and used the subunit to save Hyukjae.

For Irene that rumour, Hyukjae did not even have a single photo with her in private. I cannot really understand how the rumour came out. The so-called 'congratulating her birthday across nations' was actually the work arranged by the company in order to become a director, and even discussed with fans how to meet at the airport. The rumour was started with sexual harassment. Hyukjae even liked a post clarifying the rumour before. This sort of weird stuff cannot be regarded as dating in any sense.

Hyukjae moving back to the dorm

Hyukjae clarified a few times that moving back to the dorm was just meant to be a transition period, yet there are still people who over-interpret this action.

When they were living close together, there were even saesang fans and reporters to take hidden snapshots of them and even rumoured about them living together. Proving they are living together actually means they are speaking of their relationships to the public explicitly.

Everyone needs private space. I also do not believe them that they only have one housing property after being idols for many years. It is normal for them to have a flat just for photo-taking. What is known by us may not be everything. If they want to meet each other, they can have plenty of places to go. They don't have to let everyone know how close their houses are. Saying that this means they want to distance from each other is just ridiculous.

Also, they have mentioned on a few shows later that Donghae would go to the dorm with friends are drinking together (we all know that Donghae does not drink). In Mr. Housework, Donghae also went to the dorm during his break from work. So they can always meet when they want to meet, and the dorm is even more safe with fewer saesang fans.

Donghae and Heechul slept together in SJ returns

Too much commercialisation

Many fans say that Eunhae is be as they are doing it for business purposes. They just want to get the popularity among each other, and use all they can to get popularity.

If Eunhae is doing it for business purposes, it is basically suicidal.

They had the best timing for be before the military, yet they did not even be but even get more closer.

They are both among the top lines in terms of popularity. Even they just use fans who treated them as bf, they still do well. However, they did not even try to get people to treat them as bf, but even tried to get off their solo stans (later in the translated articles, there will be a famous scene for this). During online fansign, Donghae got into the camera for Hyukjae. Hyukjae did not even stop him, but let him continue to play around. (another famous scene to get off their solo stans)

Eunhae has gotten into SM for 20 years. They know more than any fans regarding how they should develop and handle their personal life.

Those fans who attempted to analyse them be or commercialising their relationships are just a mess. They know more than what their fans do. They are not stupid to an extent that they commercialise their relationships to bring up the popularity of the group. They would not use their relationship to gain immediate interests and cut off their future paths completely.

If not due to COVID, Hyuk would be a director and Hae would be a composer. They already set the route for themselves in the future. Even without all those media discussions, they can also live very well. They do not have to live in front of their fans to continue their work.

Those solo stans talking about grabbing the attention of the other are even more hilarious. They know each other for 20 years already. Those sweet moments that can even be regarded as publicising their relationships in other ships are even not enough? Is it that they need to tell the fans not to ask again, to that extent in order for us to understand? Is it because they are really the top among ships currently that made fans start to forget their sweet moments? They have more sweet moments than we can watch. If you are suspecting, why not you watch back their sweet moments, but bother yourself with those cuts claiming that they are be? Isn't this finding excuses to make yourself feel bad about stanning them?

We would argue even if we are dating. We can divorce even if we have married. Eunhae would not always be without conflicts, especially when they have already withstood more pressure than everyone else.

They can hardly find another person who can know themselves as much as each other. They are destined to need each other, and they cannot be without each other. Delving too much into their relationships, except for adding too much pressure to their relationships, does not even have a use.

I really feel that they have tried their best. They are already courageous enough. They can look into each other and confess. They can use songs to implicitly tell everyone how much they miss and love each other. They can protect and stand by each other to accomplish their dreams together. There will not be another Eunhae in the world.

Actually I am afraid. I am afraid that they are giving up as they are scared. I haven't been fortunate enough to get any soulmates in my life like how they care for each other. Even my imagining the existence of such soulmates, I already feel very grateful to have them. Lastly, irrational critics would often see everything as fake. They do not need anything as evidence for what they speak, nor taking any responsibility. They talked about Eunhae being fake for more than ten years, yet they are still together. The sweet moments of Eunhae already piled up to your home's ceiling, why don't you just watch and admit them?

The prerequisite for shipping Eunhae is that you need to respect them as individuals. You need to allow them to fear the pressure from the public. You need to allow them to escape and evade the public. You need to allow them to focus on their own work. They already linked themselves with each other. Whether they succeed or fail, they would be together succeeding or failing.

Eunhae are already in their thirties. They are big sunbaes right now. Those so-called using them for business purposes are already not for them. You can certainly think that they are still using their relationships for business. However, if you really believe in them who are courageously following their heart, I wish there are going to be more and more people who are respecting and congratulating them from their hearts.

Romance is when the soul matches each other, not limited by gender. It is already hard for people to understand and love each other. Do not care about the voices of the others too much.

If you read my previous blog entries, you would know that I am just supporting them regardless of the nature of their relationships, while this author supports that they are in a romantic relationship. Again you can disagree and choose what you want to believe. You don't have to listen to me, or the author.

I am putting the blog entries here and discuss their relationships as I really don’t want shippers to directly ask them about the nature of their relationships. I believe this bothers them a lot to an extent that they have to respond this occasionally. Hence, I want this to help shippers to understand and get silent with questions like this.

Even the posts that I wrote myself before, all those are compilations from the C ELFs. The Chinese Kpop fandom is pretty messy with many more controversies and rumours than the international fandom. However, instead of stirring up controversies, it is safe to assume that 80% of CELFs are Eunhae shippers (from the number of people in Eunhae Chaohua vs Super Junior Chaohua). It is an unspoken consensus among CELFs that we know these two and also puns about them. I am not wishing the international fandom will be having the same effect, but when these can survive well in the Chinese Kpop fandom, it’s not that concerning internationally.

And to be honest, I don’t really think such a small blog is causing any media issue anyway.

Lastly, we do not intend to invade their privacy. We are not going into the private space to look into them. We are just watching on-screen interactions as well, even those at the corners. We love their interactions and appreciate how beautiful their relationships are.

I don’t want to address issues like this again. It is my last time talking about all these. No one forces you to believe or read.

I’ve had one of my works kinda plagiarized but honestly I mostly found it really funny because I didn’t notice for like way too long

So I’m reading this fic right and I’m enjoying it but a few things stick out as familiar, a couple plot beats that I coulda *sworn* I had seen somewhere before. But also there’s enough stuff that’s totally unfamiliar that I was like ‘maybe I’ve read smth else this person I’ve done and I’m picking up on the style’

And it isn’t until the very very end of the fic where it ends in a *really* strange place— like, a side battle that was tangential at best to the main storyline— and in a really odd and specific way that I was like ‘hmm actually hey don’t I have a fic vaguely like this? Maybe’ so I go back and sure enough I Have written a fic like that. I’ve written a fic *very* like that. I’ve written a fic *very* like that that just so happens to be A, older and B, unfinished, with the last chapter being that minor side battle…….

Alright, so it’s not 1-1, and they’ve got enough differences that you *could* say it’s just coincidence, unless you happen to compare the fics side by side. You know that very lazy thing that people sometimes do for essays or some such where they copy-paste a sentence, but then switch the wording up a bit? Or there are several scenes in theirs that need context from mine to work.

I haven’t reported it or anything mostly because I find it incredibly funny. How bold this author is! ‘I’ve had this idea for a few years’ you sure have! And then, in the comments, upon being asked if it’s alright to translate it to russian— ‘of course! Just link back to the original fic ^^’ yes we wouldn’t want any stealing here would we oh plagiarism would be just awful! Every time I need a good laugh I go dig it up again, never fails to entertain. (Ofc if they do that to anyone else i Will slam dunk them in the trash since it is kind of a shitty thing to do, but god. The entertainment value is off the charts. I wonder if I ever add more to my own fic if a mysterious second chapter that they’ve been stewing on since 2019 will pop up)

I've had this happen to me. Quite a lot. I often don't say anything or report them, because it's not copy-and-pasted, like you said, it's a clear rewrite. I don't get it - writing your own ideas are wayyy more fun and gratifying - but I was never too upset about it

I've seen it happen to other people's fics too. Personally, I think ao3 is a hotpot of ideas and people often steal each other's ideas, sometimes without realising that they've done it. It's not necessarily a bad thing (so long as you make the idea your own), but I also think it's very important to acknowledge your sources. In fact, I've pointed this out to others before and suggested that they briefly add credit in the authors notes, and they flat out refused. Which annoys me. Like you said, it always stings worse when you see someone ripping someone else off.

Authors borrow ideas all the time, I just wish people were aware and honest and upfront about it, instead of blatantly plagiarising or refusing to credit their sources of inspiration

regarding Best Jeanist, Dabi, and all of that

@kaleswagdragon I hope you don’t mind me posting this comment and my response as its own post, seeing as it quickly got out of hand and sort of morphed into a whole entire essay.

anyway, so! you say that it’s a mischaracterization, but it’s really not, though. I mean, props for bringing up the cultural context of Japan, in which the honne-tatemae culture of covering up anything that might lead to any sort of conflict -- even if it means harming an innocent victim in the process -- is a very real issue. so given that, I understand why so many people are interpreting Jeanist’s statement in a “how dare you bring this family shame to light” sort of way. and Caleb’s “dirty laundry” translation doesn’t help, given the “we’re more embarrassed than actually concerned about this” feel of that particular phrase, which he apparently chose just because of the clothing pun without really giving much thought to any other implications.

but in the actual Japanese, the meaning/context is somewhat different. here’s a link to a twitter thread clarifying the original spoiler translation, and breaking down the actual Japanese dialogue.

I think the meaning here is very clearly “you waited until the public’s faith in heroes was already wavering to bring this down on them as a final blow.” if he was simply criticizing Dabi for publicizing the Todoroki family drama, he would have stopped with that first sentence. the two sentences afterward (“you waited until everyone’s faith in heroes was wavering, when the damage would be too great to handle”) make it clear that what he’s actually calling Dabi out for is the way that he basically weaponizes his story into the perfect political tool to finally take down the heroes. which is an observation that we as the readers can verify for ourselves as being true. look at how he so carefully edited the footage of Twice’s death. look at the contrast between the way he acts in the video, compared with the homicidal glee we see from the actual Dabi in real time.

Jeanist is notably the only one who is able to get the same perspective as the readers here, since he’s the only person who’s physically present in Jakku with the real Dabi, but is also able to hear the video being broadcast. meaning that he’s able to hear both video!Dabi’s calm, prerecorded “I’m just a concerned citizen trying to look out for a society being taken advantage of by the ones charged with protecting it” speech, and actual!Dabi’s “hahaha fuck you Endeavor I’m bringing the whole country down even as we speak, well anyway time to kill you all” reality. he alone can see that stark contrast between the concerned whistleblower act Dabi is putting onscreen, versus his true attitude of “I don’t actually give a fuck, I just want to eradicate the heroes and make my dad suffer.” basically, Jeanist is the only one who can see that juxtaposition, and see Dabi’s reveal for what it really is, seeing as Dabi literally spelled it out for Endeavor and the others. and so he’s calling him out on that.

and he’s not wrong to do so. it’s clear that a lot of fans vehemently disagree with this, but being an abuse survivor doesn’t excuse you from having the same obligation as every other human being on the planet to try your best to be a decent person, which at minimum means not going out of your way to hurt other people. I say this as someone who’s experienced abuse, which shouldn’t need to be a disclaimer honestly, but I guess that’s how it is these days. anyways, though, I have, and I know a lot of other people who have as well. it’s a terrible, awful, exceptionally shitty thing to experience, and it affects everyone in different ways. and every single person who goes through something like that deserves help and support and time to heal, and it’s a tragedy and an injustice that Dabi, from what we have seen, never got any of that.

but that doesn’t excuse him from still being held to the same basic standard of “hurting other people is shitty” as everyone else. it doesn’t mean he gets a free pass. it doesn’t mean that anyone who says “hey, Dabi using his trauma as an excuse to murder people is kind of fucked up” is an abuse apologist. and it doesn’t mean Horikoshi is an abuse apologist for writing him that way, for that matter, because guess what? sometimes people who are abused grow up to become abusers. that’s just a fucked-up thing that happens sometimes. and pretending like it doesn’t is ironically not all that different from that whole “sweeping things under the rug” concept you mentioned earlier. it does happen, and I think it’s important to acknowledge that, because acknowledging it is one of the necessary steps to take in fixing it.

this attitude of “if someone was abused they should be absolved of responsibility for their actions” that I’ve seen in some posts is taking the concept of “abuse often has a profound impact on people’s mental health, and that should be taken into consideration before judging them too harshly for behavior that they can’t always necessarily control”, and twisting it into this nice little loophole that people can use to duck accountability whenever it’s convenient. but being abused doesn’t give you the right to abuse other people, is my point. nothing gives somebody the right to do that.

and Dabi is hurting other people. he waited ten years to tell his story specifically because he wanted to use it to make others suffer. and, putting aside the part where he’s trying to engineer the downfall of society as a precursor to the mass destruction he and his pals have planned, he also broadcast the story nationwide without the consent of the other abused parties involved. which I’m not saying he didn’t have the right to do, mind you, because it’s his story as well as theirs, and he has the right to tell it. and the right to make his abuser’s crimes as public as he wants, if that’s what he decides. but it also ignores the question of what his mother and siblings might want, and the fact is that they’re also survivors, and so in theory should have the same right as Dabi to choose their own healing process, and decide exactly how they want their abuser, who like so many abusers is also a close family member, to be held accountable. anyway, but all of that is obviously very, very complicated and I don’t think there’s a clear right or wrong side as far as this part of it all. it’s not a situation where everyone can be happy, which unfortunately is often how it goes.

anyway, I’ve kind of meandered pretty far from my original point now, so my bad. my points are, basically,

(a) I think the linked explanation does show that Jeanist is chiding Dabi for using his trauma in this specifically scheming and destructive way, as opposed to saying “shame on you for not being a good little victim and staying quiet”, which would be a ridiculous thing for Horikoshi, who’s explored the topic of abuse more thoughtfully than any other mangaka I’ve read, to randomly have one of his protagonists say.

and (b) the people calling Dabi out on his shit aren’t all smug victim-blamers who have no sympathy for what he has been through. the latter point (and a lot of this post, actually) isn’t particularly directed at you btw; it’s more of just a general statement brought on by some of the discussion that’s been going on these past few days.

anyways, I actually like that the fandom is talking about all of this! I just think it’s a very complex subject, and an even more complex situation currently in the manga. and ideally, people would try to acknowledge that complexity when discussing it, rather than simply picking a side and doubling down on it no matter what, or shooting down the whole thing as problematic writing just because isn’t a neat and tidy situation where you can simply say “oh, person A is right and person B is wrong, that’s it, end of story.” it’s not, unfortunately. it’s a messy clusterfuck of a topic that’s only going to get messier as this plot continues, so hopefully we can all just sort of brace ourselves for that lol. this is really just the tip of the iceberg, I think.

Zoro x Reader - No Promises

Synopsis: A vicious pursuit, Zoro manages to get lost and stumble across someone powerful. Their aura is daunting and their ability with a sword is even more frightening, but being efficient with a sword is not their only similarity. Zoro soon finds out that their connection runs deeper, much deeper, not just skin deep in the pursuit.

“We almost caught up with him, Vice Admiral!” A shaky man yelled to his head officer with his hand against his forehead in pure respect. The person they were addressing didn’t look too pleased by what their subordinate said.

“Almost? Almost? Why didn’t you catch up to him?” They scowled as they slammed their fist down against the table and watched as it began to shake under the sheer force of their fist.

“He’s fast, we had no way -- “

“Bullshit,” They scoffed as they adjusted their white cape with a sour expression on their face. The subordinate squeaked and quickly scrambled to grab his papers before he ran out of the office with a small scream. They sighed in annoyance as they watched him run away, they leaned against their desk with a small frown. “Guess I need to go out there,” They said as they grabbed their sword and left their office. If something needed to be done, do it yourself or something like that, they thought. Like usual, the Strawhat crew was making a mess of a town they were in, and being the Vice Admiral in charge of the island and the islands surrounding it, they took it as their personal responsibility to make sure that this disturbance was accounted for. While most of the crew had escaped, there was a person that wasn’t accounted for yet: Roronoa Zoro, one of the world’s strongest swordsmen. They felt their hand tense at the thought of being able to finally fight him, to finally see if his strength was anything remarkable.

“Vice Admiral! We caught sight of him near the pier, it seems that he’s lost?” Another subordinate said in some confusion. They couldn’t help but sigh at that, they had heard about how directionally challenged the swordsman was, but they never expected it to be this bad, after all the island was only so big. With a small breath, they got into a running stance before they were practically flying through the air to the pier to catch up with the swordsman. They came to a skidding halt when they heard the sound of swords clashing.

He was here.

When they looked over their shoulder and saw the swordsman heavily breathing as he put his swords away, they couldn’t help but smirk.

“Are you already tired?” They teased as they slowly approached the rabid Zoro. Zoro frowned and went to pull his sword out, but their quick reflexes quickly stopped the swordsman in his tracks. “Did you seriously think that would work?” They frowned as they pulled their sword away. Their eyes scanned over the swordsman's body and noticed something interesting. Scars ran across his chest and his arms, all deep and jagged and painful, and most importantly exactly like theirs. They frowned at that realization and took a step back from him. Now it was Zoro’s turn to smirk, he took their look as them checking him out, who would blame them? He was built, strong, he was almost godly in his stature.

“If you just wanted me you could’ve asked, I've never done a vice admiral before,” Zoro teased.

“Shut it,” They snapped in disgust, they moved to take their coat off and unbuttoned the top of their shirt to show the same, long scar that Zoro had. “I was looking at your scar, where the hell did you get it?” They asked as they pointed to the swordsman in curiosity. Zoro frowned when he saw the scar that was the same as his own, but before either of them could say anymore, the marine reinforcements were beginning to arrive and come in full force.

“Run!” They quickly said as they grabbed the swordsman’s hand and went to run to a safe place for the two of them. They ran fast, Zoro even had to admit that he was surprised by their deftness and speed. As they reached an isolated, quiet part of the town, they started to slow down and looked over at the swordsman.

“Where -- “

“An abandoned part of the town, it was run down by pirates and the people here had to evacuate,” They shared as they adjusted the coat over their shoulders again. Zoro watched as their face became sullen and how they grew quiet as they looked around the town they were in. Even more than that, Zoro was surprised at how quickly they were opening up to him, why was that?

“Abandoned?” Zoro decided to ask. He almost regretted asking when he saw how their face darkened.

“All you pirates think you’re so righteous, you fight marines, other pirates but do you ever think about the citizens who have to live in your mess?” They asked him. Zoro stayed silent and watched as they glared at him. Zoro could feel the power emanating off of them, they were someone he knew he shouldn’t mess with so easily. A Vice Admiral, but why were they so different? Did they have the same moral compass as a normal Marine, yes, but something about the way they held themselves, the way the coat slid off of their shoulders caught his eye.

“What if I said the same about you, huh? You marines only cause damage where you go. You say you represent justice, but what is that justice? Where is it?” Zoro decided to press with a sour frown on his face.

“Don’t even compare me to -- “

“So you think you’re above the law? You think you can destroy towns that were run by pirates? What about the innocent people there depending on their protection? You guys do the same thing the lowly pirates do. I’m not saying pirates are better, I’m not. I’m saying to look at yourself before you spout bullshit like that, at least pirates have the guts to acknowledge when they destroy something, you all just run away,” Zoro ranted as he slowly stepped towards them. When he noticed how they were trying to look away from him, he used his hand to grab at their chin and force them to maintain the sharp, almost painful eye contact with him. Both of them had hate in their eyes, the tension between them was thick, but thick with what exactly? Neither of them could place their finger on what exactly it was. But soon, Zoro noticed how their eyes began to soften, their lips tightened and it looked as if they were thinking.

“There really are bad people on both sides,” They frowned as they tried to step away from the swordsman, but Zoro wouldn��t let them go that easily.

“Why do you have those scars?” Zoro asked instead. The position they were in looked compromising. The Vice Admiral’s back was against a wall now, the swordsman was looking straight down at their chest with curious eyes. Realizing the strange position they were both in, the Vice Admiral had the grace to blush and cast their eyes away from the swordsman as he seemingly undressed them with one of his eyes.

“They showed up one day. I was a captain on a ship and one day when I was patrolling, a sharp pain. I passed out, when I woke up I saw the deep scar across my chest which confused me, I wasn’t even attacked, and then even more scars started to appear. And two years ago the worst pain in my life happened. A deep pain, it was a personal scar I could tell, it was like fire,” They tried to explain, they did their best to try to explain something that seemingly didn’t make any sense. Zoro was stunned to silence, he stared at the scar some more and looked at the smooth edges of the scar, the stitching, everything. He knew the work of that sword, he was the one who was on the other end of the sword.

“It was my fault,” Zoro breathed out apologetically, but now it was their turn to be confused.

“What -- “ Before they were allowed to finish, Zoro stepped back and pointed to the deep scar on his own chest with a frown on his face.

“I got hurt then, that must've done something to you, but I don’t know why,” Zoro frowned. When they both looked at each other again, they began to realize that their connection may have run deeper than he realized. Neither of them were able to say anything about it though, how could they? One was a Vice Admiral and the other a pirate, a powerful pirate from a notorious group.

“I won’t forget you, Zoro,” They said as the sound of footsteps were heard in the distance: the rest of the reinforcements were coming. Their connection was deep, their lives were intertwined and they didn’t know it yet. “I will capture you one day, and then we can talk,” They said, their sense of justice and their loyalty to their job was still on the forefront of their mind, they couldn’t let Zoro know the power he had over them. Zoro felt the same way, he did his best to look annoyed, but it was difficult, he was intrigued by them.

“And I will do my best to kick your ass,” Zoro smirked.

“Romantic,” They teased.

“I can be if you give me a shot,” Zoro flirted as he started to follow the Vice Admiral out of the abandoned part of the town. They rolled their eyes and looked back over at him.

“You wish, now get out of here, and don’t get lost!” They yelled as they saw Zoro already running, was it even in the right direction?

“No promises,” Zoro smirked as he started to run past the marines that were there. They all looked confused, how did their Vice Admiral not catch up to him yet?

“Get him!” A marine yelled as the pursuit began. Zoro wasn’t worried about the people chasing him, instead his mind lingered on the Vice Admiral. The way the coat dropped off of their shoulders, their frown, so romantic. Zoro laughed and sped up, this was going to be an interesting pursuit for sure.

Straight after sex is one of the rare times where Kakashi feels completely at ease and relaxed. Chapter One

Fall of Junior Year – 8:57am

I curse every single decision that has brought me to this very moment as I power-walk across campus, sweating under the already blistering sun. Campus in August could easily be compared to a swamp given the amount of unearthly humidity, and I'm pretty sure I currently qualified as the local swamp thing.

The only positive feature in my morning has been the table of free coffee and doughnuts staffed by Student Government. The first day of the fall semester always seems to be accompanied by frantically wide-eyed freshmen and celebratory freebies. However, air conditioning is the only thing I would be celebrating today as I finally reach Tyson Hall – the destination of my 9:00am class.

As I rush to my classroom with one minute to spare, I slump into a seat in the far corner – my preferred location for people-watching out of the large windows and for getting away with doing homework for other classes.

Familiar faces surround me, an unsurprising observation given that this is our mandatory research seminar as psychology majors. I notice my friend Jenni sitting in the opposite corner, eyes glued to her phone screen.

Opening my laptop, I shoot her a text to come sit with me. Her head whips up, black braids moving every which way as she immediately piles up her things and hustles over, “(y/n), I forgot you were in this seminar! I just switched over from quantitative research because I couldn’t take any more statistics – or Dr. Harding.”

Dr. Harding is the dean of the psychology department and has been teaching here for ages. Feared by most psychology students for his tough grading and intimidating persona, he’s actually a huge softie – something I discovered by going to his office hours and seeing all 85 pictures of his grandchildren hanging throughout the room.

“He’s not that bad, Jen.”

She scoffs, “You would say that because you got an A in statistics like some sort of wizard. Besides, Dr. Newman is so much nicer.”

Jenni has an excellent point. Dr. Newman is the main reason I chose this seminar. As one of the most respected researchers at our university, she’s known for her qualitative studies on gender across cultures. I consider Dr. Newman to be a real badass woman and I lowkey stan her.

I turn to reply, but Dr. Newman begins taking attendance and class begins.

Fifty minutes later, Jenni practically drags me out of the classroom, “I cannot believe she kept us the whole 50 minutes. Is she aware that it’s syllabus week? It’s practically law to just read over the syllabus and then dismiss class. This is outrageous– (y/n), are you even listening?”

“Hmm?” I totally had tuned her out, focusing on the number of students flooding the quad. I had missed this – the rush of students heading to class, the yells of people greeting each other from entirely too far away, the buzz of excitement over potential parties…

“Unbelievable. How did I forget you have this whole weird-ass feminist crush on her?” Jenni forges forth, “It doesn’t matter. What are you doing tonight? You’re going out with us, right? Luna and I want to go to Hannigan’s.”

Since the three of us had all turned 21 over the summer, we finally could legally go to the bars in town. Hannigan’s currently holds the top spot on the list of bars that most of the upperclassman frequent. It’s a popular Irish pub downtown known for its cheap beer and mixed drinks.

It’s also BTS’s unofficial hangout – a fact that makes me slightly uneasy. After learning who the higher-ups are in BTS, I have taken to avoiding them like the plague. It was a relatively easy thing to do since the spring semester tended to be less focused on rushing and recruiting for fraternities and sororities.

But now it’s rush season, and I’m pretty much fucked. There will be no avoiding seeing BTS’s president Kim Namjoon out recruiting with his vice president Min Yoongi and his social chair Jung Hoseok. There will also be no avoiding pledge master Taehyung leading around new BTS pledges like a mother duckling. And don’t even get me started on how Kim Seokjin, Park Jimin and Jeon Jungkook will be popping up everywhere to advertise the latest BTS bash.

Sighing, I figure that the chances of actually bumping into them at the bar will be slim, given that it will most likely be super crowded and I can easily blend in.

I turn to Jenni as we keep walking towards our next classes, “Yeah, I’ll go to Hannigan’s. Are you going to come over to get ready at our place?”

Luna and I had moved into a cute little off-campus apartment over the summer. As it turned out, it’s cheaper to live off-campus than on-campus if you look hard enough. We also had it pretty good location-wise being just a few short blocks from both campus and downtown.

“Yes!” Jenni replies, slowing to a stop out front of the science building, “I’ll be over around 8 with tequila. I’ll text you later. I’ve got to go to neuro-psych lab now,” she rolls her eyes, “Hopefully we won’t be kept the whole time.”

Waving, we part ways, and I shake my head.

Tequila never leads to anything good.

Hannigan’s – 10:54pm

Fate seems to be on my side for once in my life. As soon as Luna, Jenni and I walk into Hannigan’s, my eyes are drawn to the back table where the BTS usually sits. It’s empty.

It’s practically an unspoken rule that no one else can sit there, and even though the bar is packed with all other tables accounted for, that one remains vacant – and for good reason.

Greek life essentially has a cult following around here. The Greeks provide status for those who are into that whole exclusivity thing. They also provide the best parties because of the size of their houses and because the university will never complain about one of their best sources of revenue.

I didn’t to rush a sorority way back in freshman year because I couldn’t feasibly afford it. The dues were way out of my price range, considering I was already paying for my education on my own. Luna, on the other hand, is in Epsilon Xi Delta (EXID) and consistently makes me and Jenni tag along to different Greek parties with her.

"Come on, bitches! Let's get some drinks," Jenni drags me and Luna through the packed room towards the bar that is already encircled by a crowd of thirsty students.

Tonight’s plan is simple – stick together, have fun, scope out cute seniors. Having already taken some shots before we left (saving that coin), we’re definitely feeling ourselves, flaunting our outfits like we didn’t spend a good hour picking them out earlier.

I had settled on a black t-shirt dress with a checkered flannel tied around the waist and some black Doc Martens. Luna and Jenni had tried to convince me to wear heels with them, but I knew syllabus week was a marathon – not a sprint. My feet would thank me later, and theirs would be crying.

As the bartender slides us our beers, the opening beats of Cocky AF by our badass queen Megan Thee Stallion blast through the speakers dispersed throughout the bar. Turning immediately to each other, we clink our beers together, take a sip, and head to the makeshift dance floor.

We squeeze and push our way through the masses until we reach a spot towards the back where the crowd has thinned out a little more. Within seconds, we’re in motion, hips swaying in time to Megan saying ‘bitch, I look good and you know that’.

Shaking out my hair, I get in the zone and lose count of how many songs we dance to. Eventually, our beers empty and Luna turns to me, “Another?" She accompanies her shouted question with an unnecessary charade of shot-gunning a beer in case I couldn’t hear her. I roll my eyes, laughing while I nod in response.

“Save our spot!” Jenni yells and disappears into the crowd of dancers with Luna towards the bar.

I continue dancing on my own. Swaying my hips, I decide to put my hair up to try to cool off a little in the sweltering bar. The music shifts into a new song, this one slower, more seductive, a favorite of mine – Lost in the Fire featuring The Weeknd.

As Abel’s angelic voice flows over me, a pair of hands slide over my hips from behind me. I start to pull away, but then I notice – the hands are tattooed. And for some reason, that hot little fact makes me relax into the large body behind me.

Those tattooed hands tug me back even more, bringing me flush against him as he falls into time with my movements. God, this guy can dance – a rarity these days.

His body is all hard muscle and heated skin. His mouth is hot against my neck, alternating between kissing, sucking, and biting. My skin buzzes. Fuck, I haven’t felt this way since–

Turning my head slightly, I can make out the vague outline him and it confirms my sinking suspicion... He’s a BTS boy.

"Hey, noona," he murmurs in my ear, his lips brushing over it as he speaks.

Fuck my life, I think as I shiver involuntarily in response. Spinning to face one of Satan’s henchmen, I toss my ponytail over my shoulder and jut a hip out in both defiance and defense. But really nothing could have prepared me for the sight of Jeon fucking Jungkook, the golden boy of BTS.

He somehow looks like he’s gotten even bigger since the last I saw him playing pong against Taehyung at that party – information that I cannot even comprehend. His left arm is completely tattooed, along with a few smaller ones dotting his hands. I glare at them, blaming those hands for throwing me off.

“Like them?” Jungkook waves his fingers in front of my narrowed eyes, “I got them this summer.” Smirking lazily, Jungkook makes his own perusal of me – taking extra time along the way.

His jaw flexes as his eyes turn molten, “You’re killing me, noona. Tae didn’t mention…” He trails off, swallowing hard.

I follow his gaze. Oh fuck. I had forgotten I decided to forego a regular bra tonight because I wanted to show off my piercings. Just having a thin bralette under my dress, my pierced nipples are definitely noticeable under Jungkook’s heavy stare.

Refusing to give into him, I square my shoulders, “Yeah, I got them this summer, too. But, I don’t see how that’s either your or Taehyung’s business.”

At my words, Jungkook rips his eyes away from my tits to finally meet my own eyes again, “Oh, but it really is our business. Tae said we’d like you and I agree.”

His voice is low and rough, and I swear I can feel it washing over my body, making all of my synapses fire in response.

“We?” I choked out. In full panic mode, I spin and try to leave, but I barely make it a foot away before getting stopped by a now-familiar tattooed hand wrapped around my wrist.

Luckily, a crashing sound echoes from the back table where the other BTS boys must be, and Jungkook lets out a string of curses, “Fucking hell, listen I have to go make sure no one’s hurt, or Joon will kill me. Stay here, okay? I’m not done with you, (y/n).”

His hand rushes up to the nape of my neck, pulling me into him. Our lips fuse together in a brutally hot kiss, his tongue slipping against my bottom lip for a fraction of a second.

And then he’s gone – disappearing rapidly through the fray to manage whatever trouble his frat has gotten into.

I stand there, shaking fingers on my lips wondering what the actual fuck just happened.

“Hey, sorry we took so long! This bitch cut in front of us and I swear she ordered for the entire fucking population of North America—”

Luna smacks Jenni’s arm, cutting her off, “You okay, (y/n)?” Luna peers closer at me, “Holy shit, is that a hickey? We were only gone for 10 minutes!”

My hand flies to my neck as both Jenni and Luna grab me, dragging me to the slightly quieter back alley of the bar. As they conduct the second Spanish Inquisition, I spill the details on what happened.

After a moment of silence following my explanation, they both start talking at once:

→ Jenni: “Hell yes, girl, go off! Jeon Jungkook is fine as fuck…” → Luna: “(y/f/n) (y/m/n) (y/l/n), have you lost your damn mind…”

→ Jenni: “…I’d hit that in a heartbeat. I’m so proud!” → Luna: “…Do you not remember last semester? Are you high? Oh my GOD, did he drug you?!”

“Stop!” I slap a hand over each of their mouths, “Jesus, Mary and Joseph, you guys are impossible. I am not ‘hitting’ anything, and, no, he did not fucking drug me.”

Sighing, I continue, “It was a lapse in judgement, okay? I remember last semester more than anyone, but he’s just so powerful and I don’t seem to have any common sense around BTS.”

I take my hands away from their mouths and immediately Jenni asks, “Wait, what happened last semester?”

Luna slings an arm around my shoulder, “Come on, let’s go get pizza and a six-pack from Ralph’s. We can go out another night this week.”

“Take-out from Ralph’s?” Jenni’s eyes widen comically, “This must be major tea. Let’s go.”

Instinctively, we clink our beers together for the second time that night and chug the remainder of our bottles in true broke bitch fashion (never leave paid-for beer behind).

With that, we trek back through the door and out of the bar. We finish our night filling in Jenni with our less than savory experience with the infamous BTS fraternity last semester.

But, as I lay in bed for the night, I can’t help but wonder if Jungkook had looked for me that night after I left… Or if he told Taehyung...

I've essentially caught up on AO and all your other side stories like Apples and Apostates, the Kinloch story and Pariahs, they're all sooo good. The downside is now I have nothing new to read until new updates and your writing kinda spoiled other DA fics for me cause I feel like few of them compare to AO and all it's companion series. You wouldn't happen to have any DA fics/authors old or recent you enjoyed reading to reccomend would you? Any good M!Handers fics would be amazing

I am actually very very bad at reading the things I want to read. I have stories I have been fully intending to read for five years but haven’t actually gotten around to reading. Once I get into a fandom mood, I spend literally every second writing and very little time actually reading, which I do not recommend. I can really only manage to read tiny stories in between writing.

@mikkeneko has written so many wonderful things centered around Anders. I like to go and grab a small one every so often for something dark or thought-provoking. They have 67 DA works you can look through here. It’s not Handers, but What These Walls Have Witnessed is my scene.

@ushauz is also brilliant and writes for a lot of characters, Anders among them. I like picking theirs up for interesting theories and humor. They have 30 DA works you can look through here. It’s also not Handers, but Lost in Translation is some A+ Anders content.

Back in the day Reikah used to post a lot of fun shorts on tumblr for Handers content and I really liked them. They’re not on here anymore unfortunately so I can’t link to them. They have 13 works you can look though here.

For more AO stuff - I will always recommend the lovely related words I’ve been gifted. Aside from the songs, there’s Amell’s Mabari by @96kyirah and Splitting Lips and Splitting Hairs by @verifiedhawke

If you want to read something short and sweet that just completely wrecked me, Signature by @alaterdate is an Amell/Anders story that gave me some serious “This hole was made for me!” vibes.

Dorianpink (@ is broken) wrote Heart of Gold which is a lovely outside look at a Handers romance if you haven’t checked that out yet either as well.

Of course there are tons of other brilliant writers out there, but those would probably be my main recommendations for Anders/Handers because those are what I’ve read. Again, I don’t really read a lot and when I do I have a very very hard time reading anything over like 2-5K words. (Ironically)

I’d recommend sorting by the AO3 filters for what you’re looking for - there are a lot of great authors and works out there that you really have to go digging for but even then it’s almost impossible to find among all the side pairings that get tagged. (I’m guilty of this as well with AO - My bad).

Like, I know you asked for Handers, but if you read AO you probably like Oghren, and cracked like a glass floor by @fanfoolishness is some serious GOOD SHIT. You could check that out too.

A Promised Land by Barack Obama. 8/10

I would recommend this book to my friends. I would reread this book.

There are certain things that Barack articulates that I’m thankful for. His over-optimism and feelings of eccentricity. I completely related to its isolating feelings even though it wasn’t the same situation and experience as mine. It’s nice to see something similar from someone different. I also liked his description of feeling everything in its entirety and how it was like a movie splice. I have felt this many times and it’s a beautiful way to describe it. I like how so much of what Barack says, thinks, and feels are so genuine and relatable. It's nice to see someone articulate and empathize this well, esp. from a man and a man in power.

I love learning that Michelle was disappointed by the situation caused by his choices at times. Other things were more important at the time and nice to see it be relevant.

It’s interesting to see the difference between this book and “Becoming.” They have different aims, but it still shows me a difference between a man and woman. I also notice that when men are described, it’s always physical. When it’s women, it’s more character and personality.

Crazy how intelligent and emotionally aware Barack is. When he stated how he couldn't just pick and choose the good things of Reverend Wright's church, I was like true and wow.

The things that Toot taught Barack is what someone should've taught me as I grew up.

Barack comparing the rides to Noah's Ark is amusing.

When he mentions translations of what the Big 4 are saying, I think about how we can't be straightforward in politics. Why not?

It took me forever to read this because I really wanted to absorb the knowledge. There's a lot of events that are covered and things I had no idea about. I love how this catalogues so much of history that were relevant to my lifetime.

On Elsa and “Out of Character” behavior.

Sometimes I see arguments between different groups of people in the Frozen fandom - with some people criticizing Elsa’s actions in F2 by calling them out of character and other people defending them by saying her actions are in-character. But here’s the thing - I think both groups are a little misguided. One side just wants to use anything to tear the movie down, but the other side just wants to defend the film when sometimes the people who critique it have valid issues.

First of all, I don’t agree with people who try to paint Elsa as OOC in F2 by saying that her actions make her less “refined” than in the first film. This idea of Elsa’s “refinement” feels more like stereotypical headcanon than canon.

In F1, Elsa feels liberation when standing in the free air, without the weight of queenship weighing upon her. Thus, in F2, her choice to stay in the Forest could parallel that if written well.

The trouble is, for some reason, F2 decides to write a narrative where Elsa’s own desires and sense of self are not the catalyst for her journey to explore herself. Her mother’s Voice is the catalyst, so instead of telling a story where Elsa drives herself forward, the film tells a story where Elsa is led by larger forces beyond her control. This becomes worse when we factor in the origin of Elsa’s powers. They’re “a gift” for her mother’s action and while we’re supposed to see that in a positive light, I just don’t.It feels like Elsa being forced on a path in life before she was even born - a path that doesn’t come from her but instead comes from her mother. The destiny narrative makes Elsa a pawn - and I know I’m not “supposed” to read the film that way, but there is textual evidence to support my perspective. The fact her powers are tied to her mother rescuing her father and not to Elsa herself. The fact that the spirits decided these things for Elsa because how could Elsa decide while still in the womb?

When people use superficial reasons like Elsa’s “refinement” to call her OOC, they sometimes criticize Anna being queen and treat that as OOC for Anna - but I’ve personally always liked Queen Anna. I feel the role suits Anna and that she makes a capable leader, making tough decisions in difficult times across both F1...

and F2.

So I don’t think the superficial readings of either sister being OOC are true.

But here’s the thing - I DO think that Elsa comes across as somewhat OOC in F2 compared to F1, just not in a way that the superficial readings ever get across. Let me explain.

In F1, we see over and over again that Elsa is deeply and sensitively attuned to Anna’s emotions.

When Anna is in pain, Elsa feels it. She doesn’t want to hurt Anna - either physically OR emotionally.

And when she does hurt Anna emotionally, it breaks Elsa’s heart. F1 makes clear over and over that Elsa doesn’t want to do this - makes clear over and over that Elsa understands the terrible emotional pain Anna undergoes because Elsa has felt a pain akin to it.

Look at the look in Elsa’s eyes in the screencap where Anna is walking away. You can see such anguish in Elsa’s eyes, such regret. If Elsa felt like she safely could, she’d reach out in a heartbeat.

Over and over, the first film stresses that Elsa understands Anna’s emotional pain, that it hurts her more than anything to hurt Anna emotionally even as Elsa feels like she has to do that because of how she has been raised.

And then comes F2 and Elsa’s connection to Anna’s emotions... lessens to some degree.

It’s still there in this moment. Elsa clearly hates doing this.

But we don’t get to pause on Elsa’s emotions. We don’t get to linger with them.

The next time we see Elsa is here:

When I first saw this moment in the theater, it felt... abrupt. This was the scene that was in all the trailers, and when you watch the trailers, you think something will lead up to this.

And then the film just cuts directly to this moment. It just... happens, with only the conversation from before as build-up - only conversational exposition.

We don’t get to pause to breathe with Elsa, to have the full weight of her reflection after sending Anna and Olaf away. She must have reflected on that as she made her way to the Dark Sea and it must have hurt... but we don’t get to... see it.

We don’t get to see an incredibly crucial emotional moment that could show Elsa reflecting on Anna’s pain and Elsa’s own pain.

We just cut to this and focus on Elsa being... Awesome.

And then we get Show Yourself, and Show Yourself is all about Elsa’s joy and validation... and in the process, Elsa reflecting on Anna’s pain gets pushed to the wayside.

Now, in the past, I’ve gotten angry at Elsa for this - because it felt acutely OOC to me for Elsa to... lose sight of Anna’s pain in such a way.

And when I got angry, anti-Elsa people jumped on my anger and tried to use it to justify their agenda - and I don’t want that.

You see, anti-Elsa people try to frame this as, “Well, Elsa is just Like That. She pushed Anna away for her safety before and now she’s doing it again.” Anti-Elsa people treat Elsa like she’s just... naturally callous.

My point is not theirs. My point is that Elsa (at least, the Elsa we see in F1) is NOT “Like That.”

In F1, we see over and over that Elsa is not naturally callous. We see so much how Elsa connects with Anna on an emotional level.

From my perspective, the anti-Elsa sentiment is just as shallow as the people who throw around the word “refinement.”

But in F2, Anna kind of gets... dropped from Elsa’s journey. The focus becomes Show Yourself, and then Elsa freezes.

I know that I struggle with these scenes because I feel for Anna so much, because I agree with Anna’s perspective and her desire to protect Elsa, because I disagree with Elsa’s choice to go on alone. (Again, my disagreeing doesn’t mean I’m saying that Elsa is a bad person the way anti-Elsa folks do. I know that Elsa loves Anna and wants to protect her. I just... wish the two characters could have resolved the matter in a different way, through communication and through love. And I’m not saying the conflict of Elsa’s decision and Anna and Olaf’s anger was bad. It’s actually a really intriguing scene where the characters all kind of right and kind of wrong. There’s depth there... but my problem is the film doesn’t really explore that depth later on. We don’t get the sisters talking together about the emotional crises that drive them.

We don’t get... anyone... talking together that much. Elsa and Anna seem on different wavelengths, Anna and Kristoff seem on different wavelengths. Miscommunication is a plot device. And I know you’re going to tell me that it’s supposed to be mature, that it’s supposed to reflect the characters’ trauma - and it does reflect that trauma incredibly well, but...

I just want to see the broken people I saw forming a family being able to communicate in a positive way for more than the last several minutes at the end. I don’t care about the maturity of miscommunication that translates into surface-level scenes. There’s as much maturity in a family healing together than in reopening wounds for drama’s sake.

So maybe, my use of the term “OOC” is wrong. Maybe it’s not OOC for Elsa to go on alone (because she wants to protect those she loves dearly), but the rushed nature of the following scenes don’t allow the emotional impact of that particularly complex scene to land. Instead of letting us feel its full weight, the film moves to other things.

I’ve praised the slow, brooding pace of F2 before, but at times the pacing can still be rushed. So maybe it’s not a characterization problem but a pacing problem.

Still, I... I can’t shake the feeling that F2 presupposes that Anna is in the wrong - and I just disagree with that presupposition.

The film frames Anna as though she has to learn something. She gets the chance to reflect on her life in aching and beautiful clarity in The Next Right Thing. The film has her apologize directly to Kristoff for leaving him behind because she was just “so desperate to protect” Elsa. And because of that, the term “codependency” gets thrown around - often by anti-Elsa folks who have weaponized the term.

Here’s the thing though. Anna has an incredibly understandable and rational position in F2. She doesn’t knw what is going on. All she knows is Arendelle could be in danger, her sister has been hearing this voice and hasn’t told her, her sister could be in danger, and Pabbie has further entrusted her with keeping Elsa safe.

Not wanting your only surviving family to die when they are put in a position where they are forced to do incredibly dangerous things is not codependency. “I don't want to stop you from being whatever you need to be. I just don't want you dying, trying to be everything for everyone else too. Don't do this alone,” is actually an incredibly clear-sighted perspective.

I don’t know. When Elsa is forced into extremes in F2, it’s often framed as heroic - and oftentimes, it is heroic. Seeking the truth about Runeard at the expense of her own life is an incredibly noble, compassionate, and heroic thing for Elsa to do. When Anna goes to extremes to protect Elsa, it’s framed as... desperation. Even though I just want to desperately cry to the screen sometimes, “But Anna is in the right, Anna is in the right, Anna is in the right...”

Maybe my mind has been exhausted by different factions in the fandom trying to place blame. maybe fandom in general is too focused on judging characters and so that hurts the discourse because we have people judging and condemning Anna as a character and judging and condemning Elsa.

Maybe Frozen 2 means to be broadly humanistic, with the characters all being partly right and partly wrong, so we can empathize and love them all. If so, that’s beautiful.

But I don’t like the presupposition that Anna is “too desperate” and I don’t like how that’s beaten home for her in such a torturous way. Maybe I just empathize with Anna too much and I see my pain in her pain across F2 and so the film just hurts to watch.

Maybe it’s because I wanted to see this family talking together openly instead of going on individual journeys of self-discovery.

I know I’m speaking from a personal place here - because the bond the sisters have (especially in F1) means the world to me and is among the most beautiful connections I have seen in fiction, so I’m sensitive about it.

But I needed to get these thoughts out.
