A part of Arthur, that sounded suspiciously like Morgana, figured it a kind of justice. For what Camelot had done to his kind.

He missed her dearly, but was glad she wasn't here to witness this carnage.

When Arthur learned of where the dragon had been, chained below Camelot, traped for over two decades, Arthur's heart stopped.

He couldn't hear his father's raving past the rushing in his ears. Cries of betrayal, how someone had freed it. Enemies of Camelot within, sewing the seeds of their destruction. How the hunt for this fiend would begin as soon as the dragon was killed.

Arthur heard none of it.

There was only one person in Camelot foolish enough to free a dragon.

Only one person with a big enough heart and small enough brain.

Only one person nosey enough to have found the bloody dragon in the first place.

Someone who stood up for unicorns and druid boys.

Someone whose expression as the dragon attacked was nothing short of crushed. Perhaps betrayal, Arthur thinks now.

Merlin.....what on earth have you gotten us into this time.

I just watched a video about the history of fools and oh boy does that describe Merlins place at court.

I'm imagining an AU now where Uther is riding past Ealdor and sees Merlin, goofy eared and struggling to contain a baby sheep and just finds him hysterical.

So he brings Merlin to Camelot as court jester.

Merlin thrives at this job. He's funny and clever, with just the right amount of backtalk. The court, and Uther, quickly become enamored with this country boy.

Arthur is not so pleased. He's never meet someone so disrespectful in his life. Yeah he's funny, and yes being treated less like a prince and more like a Clotpole (whatever that is) is refreshing. But what gives this kid the right to speak to a king like this.

If he looked a little deeper, Arthur might realize that he was jealous of how frank and open Merlin could be with his father. Uther would have his knighthood if Arthur said half the things Merlin did.

They grow closer of course, even if Uther does object a bit when Arthur drags the court jester on hunting trips and quests to slay dangerous beasts.

I do also like the idea of Merlin's magic being revealed and Uther being like

"Ha! The fool learned magic. What a funny trick, surely there's no prophecy at foot here that will dismantle my decades long genocide regime. Boy! Make the dog sing again that was hilarious"
