Terrorvision
Tumblr media
The Wikipedia disambiguation page marks four articles for "Terrorvision". A British rock band, a low-budget US television horror anthology series circa 1988 comprising seven approximately 10-minute episodes, a 1986 horror-comedy movie, and a 2018 album by Belgian death metal band Aborted. Of these four, the tv series and movie had existed as named at the time of the original printing of the series. I am only familiar with the movie -- an enjoyable lark of a type critics despise and people apologize for enjoying landing awkwardly and not accurately at " so bad it's good, maybe?" -- and I guess you can say there is a similar element or two with these two Terrorvisions -- ooze pours out of the tv set for one -- but I am not sure out of what a change of title would stem. It could be that "terrorism" came to be a daily news word where "horrorism" never did.

Ok since Monika still has her admin powers in the side stories you think she could just discover them accidentally or use them without realizing
Anyways au where Monika and friends discover her admin powers but dont know about the wider context of what it means. So they just go around thinking Monika has magic and try practicing with a bunch of silly fun shenanigans because they figure it’s some chosen one bloodline stuff and not like. A product of their reality being a constricted digital science experiment.
This au will not end well
#yeah she probably needs the epiphany to consciously use it but hypothetical aus are fun and the angst potential it plentiful#the beauty of this au is that it contains potential for both wacky slice of life escapades and soul crushing angst#they’re like doing a dumb 3am ghost summoning ritual and Monika accidentally does some admin stuff and they’re like ‘woah your magic’#and they research a bunch of other dumb stupid rituals and nearly set the carpet on fire#they like try to rob a bank or cheat on a test and nearly delete half a building#and then at some point Monika suddenly extends her admin powers too far and acts real despondent for no reason#because she ends up epiphany beaming herself and is even more conflicted than base game because she grows so much more connected to the club#it’s even worse because they were her whole world and she knows so much she sees how human they are but they just aren’t apparently?????#and while she can’t pull a base game and kill everyone for a nonexistent player she still goes through so much angst and like#the girls notice and want to help but don’t know how because she won’t tell anyone and she keeps avoiding them and like aauughhh#it would probably end with Monika doing something drastic and trying to reach out for anyone out there who understands#and idk maybe she’ll find base game Monika post act 4 and she’s like ‘what the heck why did you abandon your friends don’t to what I did???’#and maybe she could fix her mistakes???? maybe not??????? whatever’s narratively fulfilling#shoot this was supposed to be a short post for a silly au what have I done#this feels like the plot of a kids tv show where the plot randomly gets really dark on its fifth season#also realizing al lot of the same plot points happen in my fantasy au so I really gotta get to that too#ddlc#doki doki literature club#tempestmothtalk

my little pony tales is so funny like as a concept. every other mlp show or movie to ever exist is just about ponies having a good time and being best friends and if they ever are put in any actual danger then the problem is solved with the power of peace and love and friendship or something. then theres my little pony tales where one of the episodes just ends with the protagonists blackmailing people as a solution to their problems and this is treated as if its ok

I WAS ONLY ABLE TO FIND OUT NOW THAT MY FAVORITE GHOST HUNTER FOUND FAMILY BOOK SERIES JUST GOT ADAPTED?? It was utter perfection. It felt like I was reading the books. The utter domesticity. George was adorable. Locklyle was perfect. The casual hand holding and forehead touches and cradling of faces. It manages to be heartbreaking at times how much they have such married couple energy not because of how they bicker but because the world they’re in has aged them prematurely and it’s like they’ve already had their silver years and golden years together. Him just casually buttering her toast for her?? Tenderly treating her wound?? He was outright looking at her lips in that scene! We always knew he was do-or-die for Lucy but seeing this series outside of Lucy’s POV makes it adorably apparent how besotted with her he is, and that struggle of wanting to let her in clashing with his suicidal tendencies was portrayed with so much angst. Netflix may have its problems, but it has also brought my favorite YA novels wonderful adaptations. I already got Six of Crows and Lockwood & Co., so here’s to hoping for A Darker Shade of Magic too. To add, as long as I’m wishing, I’m hoping The Raven Cycle gets one too.

A book asks the reader to imagine any sensory input of the story, whereas a film or TV show provides both sound and visuals. Audio fiction lives in the space between these two approaches. I think there's a unique power to that middle ground. I love how audio drama asks the listener to co-construct their sensory experience of the story.
Audio drama allows me to simultaneously experience 'This character feels real to me because I've heard their voice' and 'This character feels real to me because I've pictured them myself'.
What the characters are experiencing is both directly presented to me and left to my imagination. There's no page or screen between me and the story. It's there in my ears. It's there in my mind's eye.
There's a strange sense of intimacy to that, the intimacy of feeling like a fly on the wall during a conversation or of hearing a character speaking as if directly to me. Perhaps it sounds contradictory to say that experiencing a story only through sound allows me to feel uniquely connected to that story, but that's one of the reasons why I love audio fiction so much.

Arranged Marriage Malec fantasy AU with dragons. Because DRAGONS!
Fantasy AU, strangers to friends to lovers, arranged marriage (but the twist is, the marriage isn't arranged by the parents, but by the couple themselves) When Magnus was a child, a group of (wild/untamed, evil, controlled?) dragons attacked his kingdom and caused immense loss to all of its inhabitants. Magnus himself had to witness his mother's brutal death at the teeth of a three headed dragon, traumatizing him greatly and leaving him with a perpetual and insurmountable seeming fear of dragons. While the dragons were eventually fought back, and the kingdom slowly rebuilt itself, Magnus' father, the king, went the opposite side of the scale to his son, not fearing but hating all dragons and wishing them dead. Years later, it seems that King Asmodeus has made enough alliances with other lands to launch an attack on all dragons; including those belonging to the mountain kingdoms, that have been tamed by the people there and live in harmony with the humans. Now Magnus is no less afraid of dragons in his twenties, than he was as a child, but he doesn't wish to eradicate an entire species for the crimes of a few individuals. So he travels to the mountain kingdoms, in hopes of convincing the reigning king/queen/prince/princess to agree to a marriage with him. Because this way, King Asmodeus can't go around killing all the dragons, if his son and heir is married to a dragon rider.

🌲🐺🍁🌕 for dillard?
okay so the funny thing is that dillard is the name of the town that my yearlong motw campaing was set in. second funny thing is that this campaign had its finale session five hours before you sent this ask in.
original character? no. original CITY. its heavily inspired (directly lifted) from the town i live in so i'm gonna be vague as hell about some things on here, and might just go on tangents about npcs when applicable.
🌲 - Do they have a favorite location to hang out in? Given that Dillard is a location itself i'm just answering this for the party. they would visit one member's arcane library (grad student office) every session to research the monster that week. my favorite location as the game master was the deep cavern under the city where a great dragon slumbers <3
🐺 - How does this oc deal with solitude? choosing to answer this from some npc's perpectives. first off the npc The Coyote bc of the wolf emoji for this question: likes it fine but CAN work with people. i just think its funny how when they went evil for a bit they were just hanging out and living in a mad scientists lab. there was a sitcom there off-screen i know it. also answering for another npc, destiny sr.: she doesn't like it. she's a professor who's been monster hunting for decades, and knows that safety in numbers is tried and true. when her last monster hunting bud was hospitalized she immediately recruited the party to try and help her. despite this, she is bad at talking to people and drives away everyone who cared about her who WASN'T in on the monster hunting (including her ex husband and daughter). she really should've gotten into rock climbing. it wouldn't have saved her (she totally died) but it would have been funny.
🍁 - What is this oc’s favorite season? since it's literally just the town i live but with magic and an excuse to make up buildings, MY favorite season there would be winter. summer so hot it kills you spring so pollen it makes your head explode. fall alternating between stupid hot and stupid cold. yes winter also sucks but its the most tolerable
🌕 - If this oc was an animal, what kind would they be? (if my city was an animal there is a clear answer but its so clear its personally identifying. so i shan't say.) OKAY SO. a dragon. listen in the worldbuilding dragons existed, but went exinct in the permian 250mya, and are insanely magic due to other worldbuilding (magical diseases and symbiotic organisms). one crash landed into the ocean, and the impact formed a cave where the dragon has just been hibernating for millennia, and throughout tectonic activity that area is now the town of Dillard. to me the dragon is the soul of dillard - its why there is so much weird supernatural stuff going on in there. and also if it ever wakes up and emerges that WOULD trigger the apocalypse. shoutout to the great beast pendragon ig
(this also makes the question below that one, "Very serious question… are they more like a dragon, or a unicorn?" very funny.)

Watching some D&D campaigns rn and they’re good they’re great fab characters… but it’s just not Dimension 20, truly the greatest role playing series I’ve ever seen, it’s so easy for the players to become the characters, and they break character all the time but you can Telll when they are acting, at no point, even in the most serious of situations, does it feel like they’re trying to be serious and ‘play’ these characters, they simply become them and that has spoiled me for all other role play series

Headcanons that can and will make up how I write the Marvelous Bats AU I’m trying to actually write
Everyone has a minor upgrade or addition on the powers they have. Eugene has his technokinesis, Pedro is physically stronger than Billy even though they have the same blessing, Darla is faster, Freddy has some minor telekinesis and is better at flying in practice, and Mary’s courage is infectious to the degree of getting people out of being scared frozen in an emergency and getting them to rescue themselves and have the bravery to help others along the way.
Billy and Mary are still twins, she’s adopted by the Bromfields and Billy is newly fostered by the Vasquez’s but they all work and spend time together as a family unit despite the separate home lives
Billy knows how to make portals anywhere with doors, the place just needs to have a door. (He has tried getting the Batcave that way but apparently the car doors of the Batmobile don’t count)
Yes all the Bats know the Marvels identity’s and vice versa, the rest of the League? Nope. Just think Batman mellowed out in his crusade to learn Caps identity
Yes Bruce wanted to adopt Billy, Billy said screw that and Jason pointed out how bad of an idea it would be to have a kid named Batson in the public eye of Gotham. “The Joker can and will try to make a bad joke out of the kid Bruce.” “Yeah Batman, you want me to die in a robin costume of all things?” Bruce just stayed silent for a moment and almost started crying (it’s was only a week later Jason took a good look at the kid and realized Billy is a mini him and Bruce probably didn’t like the Robin comment)
Damian, Darla, and Jon are the true kid hero trinity. Their mission? Chaos
Freddy just about passed out when he met Barbra, the super amazing Batgirl is the super cool lady behind the monitor that’s one of freaking Batman’s most essential teammates? Oh the feeling of finally seeing a super like himself
Tim met Billy and Mary’s parents through his own when he was little, the 3 of them had a very long discussion about cool archeology stuff for a good few hours
Because his hero form is his “full potential” and is very big Pedro asked Jason to help him get from how he is now to his hero form, seeing as his body type was closest. Now they work out together every Tuesday and Friday (school and vigilante work permitting) half of it is actually working out and the other is building Pedros confidence
Batman and Captain Marvel make a point to block and argue heavily against any other Marvel joining the League, Billy is the only one until the rest of the family does meet the age requirement they have. Billy does the heavy lifting expected of the actual Champion of Magic and his siblings enjoy the small town hero life and look out for Fawcett and the Rock when he’s off world, Mary is the defacto leader when he’s gone.
Like how every Bat has their designated Super and sometimes Wonder, they all have a Marvel they hang out with more than others. Mary and Dick hang out and bond over being the unfortunate voice of reason siblings, Darla is the childish influence making Damian act more his age and love doing it. Billy and Bruce are the respective “heads of the family” and Bruce checks in a lot on how Billy’s life is going with the occasional leadership tip thrown in to help with hero work. Jason tutors Pedro when they’re both visiting, if they cross paths on the job they’ll talk sports a lot. Freddy and Eugene talk a lot about strategy’s, games, gadgets, and superpowers with Barbra and Tim.
Tawny and Alfred are golfing buddies, they also build miniatures of flag ships together and talk about their weird family of supers over tea
Eugene has hacked the Bat-computer on multiple occasions, each time to make an edit to any files Bruce makes of the family, mostly something childish like adding “the amazing” or “the super awesome” before their hero names in the files. But one hack he did was into his contingency plans files, which nearly gave Bruce a heart attack thinking there was going to be another accident that would almost kill his friends.
The hack was the change of “Further research needed to figure out a strategy for neutralization, for now the best strategy is to trick or force them into using their trigger phrase to de-transform before incapacitating them” to “let their siblings deal with the situation”
The Justice League’s first introduction to Captain Marvel was during a “Superman is being affected by Red Kryptonite” situation. By the time they caught up to him in Fawcett their resident hero was helping the man up and panicking over how much he hurt him trying to wrestle the Kryptonite off him, they offered him a seat with them by the end of the week after satellite imaging showed that he led Superman into the air after he knocked down a building and delt with him without further damage and Superman’s account that he broke his arm and bruised multiple ribs trying to stop him. Billy was 9 at the time and only had his powers a few months at that time so he had no idea how much he needed to reel his strength in and was panicking too much to properly do so either way in that fight.
Damian was jealous that Billy got into the league so young and Bruce still won’t let him on despite his capabilities but realizes Billy only got so far because of a lie of omission and one event where he severely harmed Superman, he’d call his father an idiot if he hadn’t tried to keep an eye on such a worrying individual
The Vasquez’s know their kids visit the Wayne’s every other day, as do the Bromfields, but only Vic and Rosa know about the superhero part of it all. The Bromfields just think Mary is visiting a girl friend and having sleepovers every so often, they aren’t entirely wrong since she does hang out with Cass and Stephenie but they don’t need to know her whole superhero life. It’s framed as a mentorship so that their kids can do their best with the powers given to them with a healthy amount of encouragement in still being kids and attending school, it’s mostly just the two families spending time with eachother though.
Black Adam used to antagonize the Marvel Family but after a fight with Billy 1v1 he saw he was a child and stopped trying to actively kill him, he’s now their weird uncle figure who pops by to show them some fighting moves and try to tell Billy to stop being the champion until he’s older.
Black Adam is closer to the movie version solely for the purposes of expanding the family size, he looks like his classic comic self but has to shift in morals and backstory he had in the movie
The fight happened in a empty patch of dessert outside Khandaq when Billy was 11, no one on the League knows why they suddenly stopped fighting or why Cap officiated the guys wedding but their happy he figured something out so his city didn’t get torn up every month by their fights anymore.
The hero names and nicknames for the Marvel family are as follows
Billy Batson —> Captain Marvel (Cap, the Captain)
Mary Bromfield —> Mary Marvel (Mary)
Freddy Freeman —> Lieutenant Marvel (Lieu, Captain Marvel Jr. (by one annoying reporter))
Pedro Peña —> General Marvel (The jolly green giant, Greenie)
Eugene Choi —> Chief Marvel (Chief, Master Chief (self proclaimed, never used))
Darla Dudley —> Ms./Princess Marvel (Ms., Missy Marvel, Missy (Used for professional purposes) Princess (Used every other time as her choice of code name))
Adriana Tomaz —> Isis (/got the amulet of Isis as a wedding gift from Darla from the Rock, she didn’t know what it was but is happy she got cool powers with the rest of the family/)
Amon Tomaz —> Horus (/name changed from comics to coincide with the change in family dynamic between him and Adriana from siblings to parent/child/)
Theo —> Black Adam/Khem Adam
Shout out to @thefantasmarex for reminding me how much I love these two families together
#Amon is basically their honorary cousin#him and Freddie talk a bunch about heroes and have fierce debates on if Superman could beat Adam#Freddie wins most those arguments once Billy steps in the room and reminds them he broke the guys arm at 9#battle for the batson!: Black Adam vs Batman!#winners: the vasques family#Damian has definitely taught Darla how to judo throw someone#it’s not like visiting would be much a stretch anyhow#Fawcett is basically Philly and Gotham is in jersey#just cross one state line and hello besties#or one magic doorway and they pop out of a random door they set up in the cave for that exact purpose#Jason and Billy spitting facts about the target the joker would put up on Billy’s head for the sake of a pun#the sudden influx of kids at Wayne manor on a normal basis and hanging out with his kids is explained away to the media as#Bruce: oh my son Damian made friends out of state who come over every so often#Vikki Vale: so why is this teenager being seen spending time with your other son Jason#Bruce: big brother program#VV: and this 8 year old with Tim drake?#bruce: he’s tutoring him on coding stuff or whatever the kids these days call it#VV: and this boy next to you that’s a dead ringer for the sons you fostered at his age?#Billy: I just tag along for the in house movie theater and his butlers cooking#Bruce: he does#media thinks that Damian is crushing on Darla after she goes to some event with them and there’s photos of them laughing together#but that’s just cause he’s never laughed in public before#much less brought a guest#darlas just happy people are complimenting her mlp purse on tv#Damian is happy hes winning at seeming like a normal kid with the crushing allegations#Cass and Mary practice ballet together#Marvelous Bats AU#shazam#batman#captain marvel dc

My Generation
The years had not been bad. Oh, there had been hard ships but nothing they hadn't been able to handle.
For Giles, he didn't regret any of them. He had a family and an interesting life. A long one in fact but as always, the past never truly went away.
He had forgotten to check his letter box that morning and it didn't occur to him to do so until late that evening. When he did, there wasn't much. An add, a notice from the Slayers. They wanted his advice. He set that aside. Another add. And then. . . a personal letter. He turned it over curiously. He seldom received letters any more. The kids. . . well they weren't really kids anymore, but they never sent letters. They texted and called or simply dropped by unannounced.
Amused he set the others aside and opened the letter. A lost art, he thought. Structuring a letter, penmanship, addressing. No one kept address books any more. This one had a name he didn't recognize on the return address.
Sitting down he slit it open and unfolded it.
"Dear Rupert,
I assumed you wouldn't open this unless I used a pseudonym and rather than take the risk I chose to go ahead and do so. So here I give you the big reveal, this letter comes from your dear old friend Ethan.
Now before you put it down I assure you it's in no way cursed. Well, perhaps for the postman. His night should be very interesting but for you it's safe. I need you safe old friend because I need to speak with you. Nothing serious, just two old friends and a drink. The address is real enough and you should be able to find me. I'm sure you've already decided to throw this away and not come but I assure you I'll be on my best behavior and I ask this now as humbly as I know how to. I want to see you. No tricks, no chaos, no lies or silly pranks. I will behave. I'm too old for a row anyway and from what I hear your back couldn't take it. But jokes aside I will be good if only you'll come. I'm old now my friend and I'm doing what old men do best, calling upon their remaining friends to relive the glory days. Do me a favour and give me this one night. I don't plan to bother you again. If you're willing, meet me at a pub called the Green Goat. It's in the town I'm staying at. It should be easy to find. I'll be there the night of the 22nd. Please come old friend.
P.S.
If you come I will lift the curse on the postman."
Giles rubbed his eyes. the letter had been rather touching up until the postage stamp. No tricks. Well, leave it to Ethan to give that his own meaning. He reread the letter and considered the idea. Perhaps Ethan had changed in his old age. The idea was preposterous. Old age be damned, people only changed because they wanted to and no part of him believed Ethan had ever wanted to change. He read it again. For all of Ethan's niceties he wasn't really being given a choice. He would go. He wondered if he would have gone if the postman hadn't been involved but no answer came to him. Perhaps, perhaps not. It didn't really mater. He would go. Checking the letter, he made a mental count, the 22nd was in four days. He hoped whatever was happening to the postman wasn't so bad.
And so, on the 22nd Giles found himself outside of the Green Goat looking up at the sign. Not an authentic. Made to look it yes, but a 20th century creation. He glanced in the windows but did not see Ethan. A figure in the back might have been him but he was sitting with his back to the window. Giles griped his cane and sighed. Feeling there was nothing for it he stepped in.
The decor was quaint, warm even. He found it appropriate and not too cramped. Scanning the faces, an old man caught his eyes and he realized he had been searching for a much younger face. After looking for a moment he realized that this was indeed Ethan. A grey haired old man with wicked, laughing eyes. The eyes gave him away.
He sat down opposite and cleared his throat. "Lift the curse, Ethan."
Ethan laughed. "Hello to you too, Ripper."
"The postman. . ."
"Already done. I had a spell alert me when you stepped into town."
Feeling more comfortable Giles sat back. "What do you want Ethan?"
Ethan twitched slightly, seemingly annoyed by his directness. Giles figured he'd probably wanted to make a dramatic entrance. "Just calling up an old friend. I don't think that's so wrong."
"Black mailing your old friends isn't quite the same thing."
"I didn't trust you'd come."
Giles nodded, that was fair. Well, not fair to the postman but assuming he would have come was. "And why are you calling me?"
Ethan laughed and motioned for a waitress. "A pitcher dear, and two glasses. The beer here's rather good."
"You're not answering the question."
Ethan paused a moment, irritated again by Giles's directness. "You never had any tolerance for theatrics. It was always one of your more boring traits. Very well. . . I had a whole dialogue worked out you know, but there you go again ruining things for me-"
"Ethan!"
Another look of annoyance. "Very well. . . I've got cancer." Giles's eyes widened. He had not been expecting something so. . . well. . . mundane. "Pancreatic."
"Pan. . ." Really, he had no idea what to say. Problems with demons, a pact with the devil. . . anything but this. "Ethan. . ."
"Oh, don't look at me like that. I don't need pity and you're dying too, just a little slower."
"R-really I- I don't know what to say. . ."
Ethan waved a hand dramatically. "Pft. I didn't call you here to discuss that. Terribly boring really."
"Ethan, have you tried treatments?"
A look of amusement. "Really Rupert, how well do you know me? I'm not going to spend my last days in a hospital on the half chance that one of their blasted treatments will cure me. I've always hated hospitals and I'm not a young man. I've only got maybe ten years left. Without the cancer that is. Why waste them?"
"There would have been a chance. . ."
"A chance. I didn't feel particularly inclined to try on a chance."
Giles looked down at his hands. "How long?"
"Do I have left? A couple months. The doctors said six. That was two ago. I know I'm dying. I can feel it."
"Ethan. . ."
"But again, I didn't call you to have you pity me."
"I don't pity you, I feel sorry for you. It's not the same thing."
"Well don't. We haven't even seen each other in almost thirty years. As I recall you handed me off to the Hitler Youth rather easily the last time I saw you."
Giles felt his jaw tighten. "You had turned me into a demon."
"All in good fun."
"My Slayer nearly killed me."
But Ethan had moved his beer to the side and had leaned across the table, smiling. "We did have our fun though, didn't we Ripper?"
Giles met his eyes but couldn't muster the energy to be as cold as he had wanted. "I don't know if I'd say your trying to kill me was especially fun."
"Oh please, remember the costumes? You can't tell me you didn't enjoy beating me that night."
Giles looked away. "Ethan. . ."
"The old Ripper came out that night. But then he never really went away, did he? You enjoyed hurting me."
"I was young. You've clung to the mistakes of my youth for decades."
"The mistakes. . . I saw you at your most free. Wild, uncaring, cruel to the world. No refinement but you had a chaos in you I've never been able to rival. A hatred."
"There's no one even left to remember it." Giles said quietly.
"No, there's not. Only you and me and we're, alone aren't we? No families, no children. No real friends."
Giles looked at him coldly. "I have a family. I have children. I have three. A daughter who became the strongest woman I have ever known, a girl who is one of the most powerful witches in the world and a boy who never quite realized just how brilliant he actually was. I had three wonderful children and they're my family. You could have had that Ethan."
For a moment, Ethan looked sad and the old face before him was twisted. "Come on Giles. . . it wasn't for me."
"Then what was? Your chaos gods? Where are they now?"
Rather than anger, amusement flickered in Ethan's eyes. "They don't grant mercy. They don't have compassion and I never expected such from them. I'm not a fool, I knew what I was getting in to. You felt their power once."
"That was years ago."
"Yes, a time gone by I suppose. We're old men now, no matter how much we hate it."
"I've never hated growing old."
"Oh please. I know you Ripper. The Watchers wanted to be old. They wanted to be old as boys but you. . . you weren't like the rest of them. You had fire in you. Anger. They could never understand that, the pompous stuffed shirts. You were alive."
"I was young."
"Yes and you had fun, didn't you? Didn't we?"
"Ethan I was so young. . ." He pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Don't be like them old friend. Don't be boring. It's the worst thing a person can be. I'm dying and I've got more life in me than they ever had."
"Ethan, you hurt people."
"Yes, and you did too."
"I stopped. I was a child rebelling! I'm an old man now, why are you bringing this up? Why are you so fixated on who I was fifty years ago?!" "Because I know who you really are and if I die knowing you lived the rest of your life denying who you are then it was all pointless."
"Pointles. . .?"
"So much wasted. You spent so long pretending. Being one of them when you never really were. "
"I don't know what you think I was. I grew up. I stopped being selfish."
"Yes you put on a suit and patches on your elbows and you stopped being exciting. My blood used to rush when you'd come over. All attitude and anger. Your eyes would glint with it. It was wonderful. It was intoxicating. I never knew what you would do. I used to say to people, let's go find Ripper, he'll make this night exciting."
"I was a child. People grow up."
"But they don't need to lie to themselves. You could change the way you dressed and the magic you preformed, you could speak all posh and make your father happy but I knew the truth and I saw it when I visited you in Sunnydale. You hadn't really changed. The anger was still there."
"Ethan you're dying, I don't want to talk about this."
"Then what do you want to talk about? My illness? My health? Because I don't."
"I don't know what you want from me."
Ethan paused. "It's lonely dying. The children never visit."
Giles raised his eyebrows in pity. "Mine do, Ethan."
"Yes, yours do." He snorted. "You didn't do badly did you? That girl, that Slayer. . . I knew you loved her. I could tell. In the way only a father could."
"I do love her. She's grown into a more wonderful woman than I could have ever hoped. I doubt even half of that's because of me."
"Probably not." Ethan laughed. Giles let it slide as the man's own bad humor. "I liked playing with you Ripper. We had our fun."
Giles looked down and sighed. "We did." He looked up and saw a spark in Ethan's eyes. It meant nothing, he was simply giving an old man what he wanted. He could admit it to Ethan if not to himself. "Perhaps it's best it all dies with us. All of our friends are dead."
"Well, the sordid dealings of two old men are meant to be forgotten. Give it two generations and we'll be only a blip in history. Hardly worth mentioning if anyone remembers at all."
"I would have thought that would have bothered you."
Ethan shrugged and Giles realized just how old he looked. Somehow, he was still seeing the boy he had first known. He wondered if Ethan felt the same. "I always try not to be predictable."
"An annoying habit."
"You once found it not so."
"Yes, and I was young and stupid."
Ethan smiled slightly. "You don't give me much, Ripper but I'll take the bones I can get."
"That's all your getting. Let it die Ethan. Let the past die. All of your tricks and all of my mistakes. No one needs to remember them."
"We're on death's door, Rupert and you're still ashamed."
"Our friends died."
"Yes, and I've made peace with that."
"It's not about making peace. You continued to use black magic."
"I worship chaos. I always have."
"Ethan, why did you call me here? To tell me you're dying? To bring up the past? It's pointless. I'm not who I was when I was sixteen and neither are you. Just die with dignity."
Ethan scowled. "Die with dignity? There's no dignity in death. I mean I'm sure there will be for you but I don't want it."
"Then I can't help you."
Ethan nodded, looking almost serene and for a moment they sat drinking in silence. "What do you think they see when they look at us?" Ethan asked after a while, gesturing towards the younger people in the pub.
Giles was startled and he looked around to see if anyone was watching. "I-I don't. . ."
Ethan laughed. "Calm down, I'm not asking if they see a pair of old queens. What do the young people think when they see two old men drinking together? I know what I thought when I was their age. Useless old pensioners, forever whining that the world had gone and changed on them. I thought it was pointless, their sticking around. It was my time to be young. The world had passed to me. I wonder what these people see when they look at us. The girls think the old are cute and the boys think 'that'll never be me'. They don't think about who we were. If we're still those people. We're relics to them. They don't think about the lives we've lived or the horrible things we've done. Just sweet old men, waiting to die."
"How very gloomy. never really gave them much thought, so long as they weren't telling me what to do." Giles allowed a small smile.
"Your hatred for being told what to do was always magnificent I doubt the young people today have that fire."
"Yes well. . . the world's passed to them. It isn't ours anymore."
"I don't particularly feel inclined to let it go. . ." Ethan huffed.
"I don't think we get a choice."
"I hate being old. My back hurts, my fingers don't work as well as they used to. I'm always cold. What have you got the cane for?"
"My knees aren't what they used to be."
"Horrid. Do you remember the song? Roger Daltrey, Hope I die before I get old? What was it called? The Who sang it?"
"My Generation." Giles smiled faintly.
"Do you think any of these people know that song?"
Giles glanced around. "Perhaps one or two."
"You were always good with a guitar. I'm not saying you were Clapton but you were quite good."
"I was rather proud of it." Another moment passed and Giles sighed. "It's getting late Ethan and I've got a long drive back. My eye sight isn't as good and driving in the dark makes me nervous. I think we should say good night on a positive note."
Ethan made a slight face but nodded. "I suppose."
Neither one of them made a move to get up and they finished their last drinks in silence before Giles finally tore himself out of the moment. "I suppose this wasn't such a bad meeting. I haven't turned into a demon yet."
"Give it time."
He glanced at Ethan sharply but Ethan raised both hands. "Just a little joke. I promised to behave and as much as it disgusts me I have." The laughter in his eyes died as Giles stood to leave. Ethan grabbed his wrist suddenly, eyes looking panicked. "Visit me before the end. Please Rupert. I'm only human and I'm alone."
Giles gave him a considering look before nodding. "Alright. Until then, Ethan." He left his old friend sitting there, he wouldn't visit. He knew that. Ethan probably knew that but he had said he would and sometimes that was all people needed to hear. He hoped it was enough but he didn't think he could bare to see the man again. Too much between them, too much past, too much anger. He couldn't do it.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
He tried not to think about it as the months passed but when four had come and gone and then a fifth he began to make peace with it. Ethan was dead and he was the last of his old friends left. Well, it was as it should be.
Around a year later however he found himself in London and as he was catching a cab back to his flat he stopped. Across the street, amidst the crowd. . . it couldn't have been. . . but he was sure it was. It was Ethan and the man caught his eye and smiled wickedly, waving. Giles felt his jaw drop as the face twisted into a grotesque parody of its former self. A vampire's smile.
Ethan was a vampire. Had he been in the Green Goat? He doubted it. As the figure across the street disappeared he shut his mouth. Of course, Ethan had always been a coward and. . . well it was unexpected. He shook his head, stomach feeling sick.
"You getting' in or not?" The cabbie snapped, pulling him from his trance.
He coughed slightly and climbed in. Ethan had evaded death.

one of my favorite things in fantasy and sci fi is when the setting of the work is in some ways absolutely better than our current setup which makes you go "god i wish i lived in this world" but as the story progresses you realize that the setting is also shittier than our current world in another, highly specific way that then makes you have to go "well maybe i can deal with this if it means not having to work to survive" or something similar
