I know how the Merlin fandom makes jokes about George, like how Merlin doesn’t like him, and he doesn’t like Merlin, especially how they dressed him to look like Merlin but picture this:

George dressed like that because because he actually likes Merlin. He thinks Merlin is an Icon. He saw Merlin talk shit about Arthur and was like “I’m going to worship this man until I die”

I just think it would be funny in fics if he and Merlin were friends. George straight up lying to Arthur, covering for Merlin when he need to do magic things.

Arthur: “MER LIN — George have you seen my manservant anywhere”

*cue explosion in the background”

George, who help Merlin sneak out: who is Merlin, never heard of a Merlin

Bad merlin concept: Most stuff is the same, it's still set in a land of dragons and time of little gay wizards and all that shit, but it's filmed like the office. Allow me to demonstrate -

*Arthur stomping around his chambers*: ANOTHER MAGICAL THREAT??? THAT'S THE THIRD TIME THIS WEEK SOMEONE'S PUT FROGS IN MY STEW!

~Cut to merlin talking to the camera interview style~

Merlin: Oh yeah, that's me. He made me clean the stables so I'm pretending to poison him for a little while. Neat, huh?

How I picture Leon finds out that Merlin has magic:

Merlin was tired.

Not because of the abundance of chores and the fatigue that came from running around after yet another assassin, but because he hadn't used his magic at all for the past month. Yes, even with the presence of the assassin. Gwaine had fortunately been there to knock the guy out and throw him in the dungeons, catching him red-handed.

He had been trying to stay as cautious as possible, which was why he hadn't used magic in such a long time.

But the fact was - Merlin was born with magic. It was as natural as breathing to him. So when he didn't use magic for an extended period of time, he would get tired.

He needed to use magic. Just a small bit.

He would do it in the safety of his room, but he was currently carrying Arthur's armor to his chambers from the training field and it was heavy and he was so so tired and- well, it would only be a small spell.

He put the armor down, checked that no one was around, then held up a palm. His eyes flashed gold and a small fire appeared on top of it.

Just because he had missed his magic, he flashed his eyes gold and made the flame morph into a butterfly. He smiled as it slowly flapped its wings, staying on Merlin's palm.

Then Merlin heard a gasp and he snapped his head to the newcomer.

The thing about knights was that they were trained to be as quiet as possible even in armor. It was required for certain missions as well as hunting. But armor was impossible to be quiet, so Merlin, having spent a significant amount of time with them, had trained himself to automatically hear when they were approaching. And since they were always in their armor anyway, even sleeping in it sometimes, he had relied on that to alert him of anyone crossing the hallway.

After all, anyone else - servants and nobles alike - wouldn't bother quieting their footsteps while walking.

If they did, it would be because of malicious intent so it wouldn't matter if they saw Merlin or not.

But occasionally - very very occassionally - knights walked around without their armor.

That, combined with their light footsteps and silent movements, had caught Merlin unaware.

So when he snapped his head over to look at Leon staring with wide eyes at the butterfly made of flame in his hand, Merlin was surprised. More than that, he was afraid.

The two of them froze, with Leon's gaze on the fire butterfly and Merlin's on Leon, standing rigidly like deers caught in the wild.

Then Leon raised his eyes from the butterfly to Merlin, then back to the butterfly, then back to Merlin again-

Before he spun on his heel and walked the other way whistling jovially like he hadn't seen anything.

Merlin was still frozen like a deer. He didn't move until several minutes later when he did hear armor clinking against each other. That was when he got rid of the butterfly and hefted the armor up, walking back to his room, leaving Arthur's armor in favor of panicking.

When Merlin met Leon in the armory that evening, he tried to approach him. Leon, recognizing what Merlin was trying to do, let him, moving into a secluded changing room far from the armory with the other knights and squires and pages.

Leon nodded at Merlin in greeting when Merlin closed the door.

"Leon," Merlin started. "What you saw-"

"That you were shirking Arthur's chores? No worries. I didn't give you away before, I won't do so now."

Merlin blinked. "What?"

Leon sighed. "Look, Merlin. I don't get paid enough, even as a knight. Not with all those missions and calamities that keep getting Arthur into trouble. So I refuse to deal with anything above my paygrade. Even you avoiding chores."

Merlin blinked again.

Leon clapped a hand on his shoulder, and with a smile, left the room.

Merlin looked after the knight, wondering for the first time, exactly how many times the knight had committed or aided or turned a blind eye against treason for him to be this casual about it.

Arthur welding one of the only weapons that can harm Merlin, and Merlin having magic.

Both capable of hurting each other in the worst way possible.

Arthur: I am the king! I say what your rights are

Merlin: Yes, and you have declared that I am free

Arthur: Free to be yourself!

Merlin: Exactly and myself's attention is freely directed to another part that is not you at this moment.

Re-watching season two episode one of Merlin is so Ahhhh

Imagine if this was the episode that Arthur just started listening to Merlin about bad people. After seeing his people die because he trusted the wrong person, Arthur feels guilty. He realizes that Merlin knew that Cedric was sleazy (although Cedric wasn’t trying it kill everyone, it’s just the process of things). So now everytime Merlin vaguely gives a nose scrunch Arthur is like “well you have to go, banished”

Or like Merlin just is so petty and hold it against Arthur. He doesn’t immediately go back to work for Arthur right but instead he stays with Gaius and lcommits to the physician assistant position. Until Arthur is like “Merlin please everyone is being nice to me and you keep calling me sire, and everyone is spending time with you but me and sir Owen keeps wistfully talking about you ..” and so on.

But after Merlin comes back to being Arthur’s servant he makes petty remarks under his breath like a scorned wife. “Oh yeah George is a great servant, maybe he should be your manservant” and “you’re completely right Arthur, Henry did a fabulous job with your armour, maybe you should throw me away again and hire him.”

Arthur’s just like “Merlin please, it was one time” and tries to be better.

OR Could you imagine If one high ranking person believed in Merlin?? Like Leon starts to realize that Merlin has frighteningly correct assumptions of peoples and situations. So he just starts to pay more attention to when Merlin says “hey I think this person sucks”.

At first he thinks that Merlin is complaining about Cedric becuase he’s getting kicked out of the manservant position, and he empathizes but there is nothing Leon can do. Accept be coldly cordial around Cedric. But then Merlin is like “he’s been possessed” and Leon thinks it would be remiss to ignore that becuase it puts Arthur’s life at stake. So he follows Cedric around and sees him in the courtyard heeling out a spell and wacks him in the head whiles he is distracted.

I find it endlessly funny that literally whenever i see a gif or screencap where merlin isn't wearing the neckerchief, half the comments will just be "omg put ur collarbones away whore" 😭

Ok here me out, a Leon that figures out Merlin's magic on his own. Like he notices things, and he puts it together. He knows, he knows before anyone else (except gaius obviously, and maybe Lancelot) but he doesn't confront Merlin.

It's Merlin, there's got to be a good reason for it. He's seen magic before, and it's not always dangerous. It can be used for good. It can be used for fun. It's not always a weapon to fear.

He doesn't confront Merlin, because he understands why Merlin isn't telling people. It's not that he doesn't trust them, though Leon thinks that maybe Merlin has the right not to trust them. It's for his own safety.

So sure Leon knows, but he doesn't tell anyone. He doesn't bring it up. He doesn't talk about it, he doesn't try to drop hints that he knows. He knows, and he keeps that a secret because it's Merlin neck on the line.

And sure, maybe one day Merlin will try to tell him. And all Leon will do is say "Merlin I know, you don't need to say it" because saying it out loud could be dangerous and he doesn't want to risk Merlin.

Even if he doesn't love Merlin (which come on of course he does) he doesn't talk about the magic. But he gives him a safe place to do mundane magic. He gives him a place to do simple magic, nothing grand, nothing flashy, magic just because.

thinking about morgana's perception of merlin.

he's kind of a weird guy. devoted to arthur. devoted to camelot. he poisoned her for it. engaged in a year-long cold war against her. but ALSO, he's not anti-magic. he's maybe even pro-magic, because he helped her in 2x03, helped mordred in 1x08, and willingly conspires against the throne that he is supposedly so devoted to whenever it suits him. so she kind of likes him, even if she can't respect him.

and then. she finds out that HE is the powerful, preeminent, terrifying magical being that is Emrys.

i mean, seriously, what do you do with that information.
