Education is a fundamental right for all children, regardless of their abilities. Inclusive education aims to provide a supportive and nurturing environment for students with disabilities, enabling them to access the same educational opportunities as their peers. Accommodations and modifications play a crucial role in ensuring that students with disabilities receive the support we need to thrive academically and socially. In this blog, we will delve into the significance of accommodations and modifications in empowering students with disabilities to reach their full potential.
Understanding Accommodations and Modifications
Before Metaphrasis dives into the importance of accommodations and modifications, it is essential to understand the difference between the two. Accommodations are changes made to how a student learns or demonstrates their knowledge without altering the content itself. Examples of accommodations may include extended time for exams, preferential seating, or the use of assistive technologies such as screen readers for visually impaired students.
On the other hand, modifications involve altering the content or curriculum to suit the individual needs of the student.
Enhancing Learning and Participation
One of the primary reasons why accommodations and modifications are vital for students with disabilities is that we enhance learning and participation. By providing necessary support, these students can fully engage in classroom activities and grasp the essential concepts being taught. Accommodations ensure that students can access information effectively, whereas modifications enable them to learn at a pace that is comfortable for them, reducing frustration and increasing motivation.
Boosting Self-Esteem and Confidence
Navigating the educational landscape can be daunting for students with disabilities, as we may face additional obstacles compared to their peers. Accommodations and modifications help level the playing field, allowing these students to experience success in their academic endeavors. This success, in turn, boosts their self-esteem and confidence, fostering a positive attitude towards learning and personal growth.
Fostering Inclusivity and Acceptance
Inclusive education is not just about providing an education to students with disabilities; it is about creating a culture of acceptance and understanding. When accommodations and modifications are embraced in the classroom, it sends a powerful message that diversity is valued and that every student is an essential part of the learning community. This fosters a sense of inclusivity, where students learn to appreciate and respect individual differences.
Nurturing Independent Learning Skills
By tailoring educational strategies to meet the specific needs of students with disabilities, accommodations and modifications help nurture independent learning skills. As students gain confidence in their abilities and learn to advocate for their needs, we become better equipped to take charge of their learning journey. These skills extend beyond the classroom and prepare them for future challenges in higher education and the workforce.
Meeting Legal and Ethical Obligations
In many countries, inclusive education is not just a recommendation but a legal and ethical obligation. Laws and policies have been put in place to ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to quality education. Accommodations and modifications are essential tools in meeting these obligations and upholding the rights of all students to an education that suits their unique requirements.
Facilitating Social Interaction
Inclusive classrooms provide an opportunity for students with disabilities to interact and build friendships with their non-disabled peers. Accommodations and modifications support this social interaction by creating an environment where all students can actively participate in group activities, discussions, and projects. As friendships blossom, it helps break down stereotypes and encourages empathy and understanding among students.
Improving Academic Performance
Numerous studies have shown that accommodations and modifications positively impact the academic performance of students with disabilities. By removing barriers to learning, these students can concentrate on their studies and make meaningful progress. As academic performance improves, it opens up more opportunities for their future endeavors.
Parental Involvement and Support
Accommodations and modifications also involve parents in the educational process. When parents see that their child’s unique needs are being met, it fosters a strong partnership between educators and families. This collaboration enables parents to support their child’s learning at home and advocate for their needs effectively.
Creating Lifelong Learners
Ultimately, the importance of accommodations and modifications lies in their power to create lifelong learners. When students with disabilities are empowered to succeed academically and socially, we develop a passion for learning that transcends the classroom. These individuals grow up to become active and engaged citizens, contributing their talents and skills to society.
Conclusion
In conclusion, accommodations and modifications are not just tools to support students with disabilities; we are a testament to the values of inclusion, acceptance, and equality in education. By embracing these practices, educators, and society at large can help shape a more compassionate and equitable world for all learners. It is essential that we continue to champion inclusive education and celebrate the unique abilities of every student, as we are the leaders of tomorrow.

I found an extremely dope disability survival guide for those who are homebound, bedbound, in need of disability accommodations, or would otherwise like resources for how to manage your life as a disabled person. (Link is safe)
It has some great articles and resources and while written by people with ME/CFS, it keeps all disabilities in mind. A lot of it is specific to the USA but even if you're from somewhere else, there are many guides that can still help you. Some really good ones are:
How to live a great disabled life- A guide full of resources to make your life easier and probably the best place to start (including links to some of the below resources). Everything from applying for good quality affordable housing to getting free transportation, affordable medication, how to get enough food stamps, how to get a free phone that doesn't suck, how to find housemates and caregivers, how to be homebound, support groups and Facebook pages (including for specific illnesses), how to help with social change from home, and so many more.
Turning a "no" into a "yes"- A guide on what to say when denied for disability aid/accommodations of many types, particularly over the phone. "Never take no for an answer over the phone. If you have not been turned down in writing, you have not been turned down. Period."
How to be poor in America- A very expansive and helpful guide including things from a directory to find your nearest food bank to resources for getting free home modifications, how to get cheap or free eye and dental care, extremely cheap internet, and financial assistance with vet bills
How to be homebound- This is pretty helpful even if you're not homebound. It includes guides on how to save spoons, getting free and low cost transportation, disability resources in your area, home meals, how to have fun/keep busy while in bed, and a severe bedbound activity master list which includes a link to an audio version of the list on Soundcloud
Master List of Disability Accommodation Letters For Housing- Guides on how to request accommodations and housing as well as your rights, laws, and prewritten sample letters to help you get whatever you need. Includes information on how to request additional bedrooms, stop evictions, request meetings via phone, mail, and email if you can't in person, what you can do if a request is denied, and many other helpful guides
Special Laws to Help Domestic Violence Survivors (Vouchers & Low Income Housing)- Protections, laws, and housing rights for survivors of DV (any gender), and how to get support and protection under the VAWA laws to help you and/or loved ones receive housing and assistance
Dealing With Debt & Disability- Information to assist with debt including student loans, medical debt, how to deal with debt collectors as well as an article with a step by step guide that helped the author cut her overwhelming medical bills by 80%!
There are so many more articles, guides, and tools here that have helped a lot of people. And there are a lot of rights, resources, and protections that people don't know they have and guides that can help you manage your life as a disabled person regardless of income, energy levels, and other factors.
Please boost!

here's a reference for people writing school-aged disabled characters in the US and are confused whether their character would be receiving a 504 vs IEP vs BIP:
✨ 504 documents center around accommodations only (including medical). accommodations allow the student different access to the curriculum in some way while still upholding them to the same standards of learning. for example, a student might have accommodations for 50% extra time on tests/quizzes, reference or formula sheets for math tests, sentence starters for english class, assistive technology like text to speech/speech to text, tests given in a low-stimulus location, etc.
✨ IEP documents, while they almost always do grant accommodations, also must include modifications which change the actual content of the class in some way. common examples of curriculum modifications could be a reduction in the material for classwork and homework, separate and reduced tests, a difference in expectation for output (for example, on a project, a student may be graded based on a different rubric or based on effort vs correctness), placement in a skills development/learning center/resource class, etc. IEPs may also grant services to the student like speech and OT.
✨ IEPs also may include a BIP, or a behavioral intervention plan (BIPs can technically exist independently from an IEP though that's rare). a BIP is used to provide strategies for harmful and/or destructive behaviors. BIPs are granted after a long data-collection process, so in my experience they are very individualized. examples could include the use of a 5-point scale, lots of walks to cool off when the student is feeling dysregulated or when prompted to by the teacher, breaks with preferred activities after completing x amount of nonpreferred tasks, a goal chart to track progress, a safety plan, etc.
So, in short:
Character is being held to the same standard of material but just needs changes in how the material is presented or accessed? 504
Character is behind held to a reduced or otherwise altered standard of material or requires additional support with alternate learning environments, smaller class sizes, and more staff? IEP
Character's disability is manifesting behaviorally and is causing them to engage in dangerous, harmful, or destructive behaviors (like getting into fights with students or destroying school property)? BIP
(again, IEPs can include all 3).

I visited Mezagoza the other day to talk to some of my brother's teachers and I can't help thinking. Those stairs can't be practical. Like is that really the only way to get up to the academy? How do disabled students get up there?
you can take a flying taxi up there for free or ride a pokemon (cyclizar are ever popular), but that's really the only other way to get up. the academy was built about 800 years ago as a celebration of the foundation of paldea following the decline of the paldean empire, and it was intended to be both a state of the art educational facility and a grand monument to the new region. we actually have a comedy from that time period in which the first director of the academy can't make it up the staircase and falls all the way down!
unfortunately, i'm not sure what there is to be done about the staircase. it's a historically important building, which has usually been the argument against making modifications to it, and the school technically offers an alternative in the form of flying taxis. building another way to get up would take money i doubt the academy is willing to shell out, but i don't really know much about whether or not there are plans to do anything about it.

miles g morales ★ general headcanons
Tumblr media
warnings: sort of angsty, mentions of his dad's death, money being tight and such 😞
a/n: hi my little piranhas im feeding you today say AHHHHHHHH.... all my random non-relationship miles g thoughts dumped into one! he has 6 lines but less is more right 😁 im okay i promi
Let me just geek out about his non-existent gear functions for a moment 😞 Miles is all about little modifications and improvement so when he messes around with his uncle's gear he decides to make some adjustments to the design and also the functionality. Has his own spin to all of his gear cause a part of him really wants to be like the superheroes he sees in comics with their own sort of persona. But of course it has to be functional so...!
All of his gear is coordinated and he has a mode where he can turn off all the lights for stealth and such! The lights are actually off most of the time but he puts them on to show off mostly or make himself known when he's bored of waiting.
A really cool function would be if he could redirect or offset his lights so when he's fighting in complete darkness he can easily confuse his enemies. Tends to scope out places and mess around with the power supplies — uses the occasional smoke bomb too. He's in his element in dark, maze-like places, which essentially makes Brooklyn his concrete playground.
Scarily good at lockpicking. Has broken into his own house multiple times from forgetting his keys. He can open most doors with simple tools and disable electronic locks with a little work.
Can I just mention his shoes as well... they're like the jumpy shoes from Subway Surfers you can't prove me wrong until the next movie comes out like— Okay no but seriously I imagine he can stick to surfaces and things and maybe they can propell him upwards? You see those glowing lights idk figure it out 😞
Also somebody (I have no idea who but here's the link to the original post) had a headcanon that he'd have a high auditory intelligence, so for a while, he spends time developing a voice modulator. He likely has one anyway to keep his identity a secret, but what he really wants to do is is create a device that can replicate other people's voices.
Because he's good with sound and physics he makes it work in no less than a few weeks. The first voice he tries is his uncle's and he says a bunch of dumbass stuff. (Aaron is a little annoyed but more proud of his nephew than anything.) Eventually it gets to the point where he can calibrate it with a couple clicks since he has such a good ear for frequencies and the like that deceiving villains is no trouble at all.
I think Aaron and Miles would still have that cool uncle and nephew relationship but its also a mentor and student one. While Miles is good at the tech stuff I think he's a pretty lousy fighter at the beginning and Aaron has to teach him a LOT.
Uncle Aaron probably used to fight for sport back in the day (boxing mayhaps? 😁) so a lot of Miles' technique stems from MMA due to its versatility (anything hand-to-hand at least.) Even then, most of the problem is being able to think quick and act quicker, so Miles goes through lots of practical training (so he's being chased by the Sinister Six from day one 😭) It's well worth it though because without the Spider-powers he has a lot of catching up to do.
While training with Aaron he's exposed to a lot of his old records and develops a taste for jazz. He comes to associate certain manoeuvres with the way the music goes, so he tends to hum to himself while casually knocking the wind out of people. His uncle finds it just a little creepy, but again, he's glad to see Miles coming along.
In fact, Aaron is relieved. His nephew had been reserved and was pretty much holed up in his own room for weeks after his dad passed. Of course the passing of Jefferson was hard on Aaron, but Miles has it even harder. Eventually, they decide to paint the mural together, and Miles lets Aaron know what's on his mind. He's always been close to his uncle but especially then spending time roaming the streets, painting, boxing and listening to old records was his lifeline.
Miles figures out his uncle is the Prowler before Aaron even lets him in on it. After seeing how determined his nephew his is, that's when it all started.
But with everything going on in his vigilante life, his normal life is something he has has to be careful not to fall behind on. At the age where college applications are coming up, Miles is driven to the bone with school, despite not actually being there half the time. Still, he's somehow averaging As and the occasional B, easily the top of his class in AP Physics and Calc.
He doesn't try to talk to people in school like he might've before, but he's not antisocial by any means (sometimes his bluntness is mistaken for talking back though 💀)
He's also the type of dude to do homework as soon as the teacher hands it out, because he knows he will not have time later (and to avoid all the night-before crises of freshman year.)
Rio is being pulled thin too, always covering shifts for her colleagues at the hospital just so she can have a little extra pay. She's been saving for Miles' birthday since his last one, always checks his clothes for holes or if they still fit, and makes sure there's something in the microwave if she can't be there for dinner. Rio makes sure he always has everything he needs, even while paying bills and rent. They're not struggling too much, but it's not like they can do whatever they want.
Despite that, they're managing; what she doesn't know is that the sigh of relief she breathes every month is because of him. Miles always makes sure to take care of his belongings, put in any cash he makes from his "part time job" into her account, just doing whatever he can to help. Also, he's become more and more protective of his mom, and he always takes the opportunity to do errands for her, especially when it's getting dark outside.
Miles is actually more paranoid than her when it comes to saving. Even when it's winter, and she tells him to turn on the heating whenever, you best believe he's throwing on his jacket in his own room and firming the cold. It's entirely unnecessary of course, but he can't shake the guilt when he feels the only reason his mom works so hard is because of him. They've moved twice already and there's no way they're moving again, so if the landlord gives them trouble he'll just give them hell (let's just hope it won't come to that.)
Miles learnt how to treat his own injuries from Rio. She taught him basic first aid at the very least, and on a couple of occasions he's tried to learn things himself with the clunky old first aid kit at home. Rio never asks why the stitch on one of their pillows is done with dental floss, and looks strangely like that of a suture (a very bad one at that.)
His Spanish also improved a lot too. After his dad's passing, he met a lot of relatives from his mom's side that he doesn't remember ever seeing before, but it encourages him to learn how to speak better. Long gone are the days of silently observing family drama over the phone — he has to keep up now, and he'll defend his mom cada día de la semana (even if she's somewhat embarrassed by it.) Essentially he's at that level of fluency where he can be rude without being rude 😭 (just saying some of the things his relatives say are NOT helpful.)
With all of this going on in his life, it's no surprise that sleep doesn't come easy. Or maybe it is, considering how much he works his body. Either way, he's left staring at the ceiling or curled up on his side most nights, the untouched toys and collectibles in his room to keep him company. Miles used to sleep at 8pm on the dot and wake up at 6; that was when things were good, and he didn't have his whole universe on his shoulders. All his bed is now is a place to collapse, and close his eyes until it's light outside. Most days, he's exhausted — bone-tired — but the most he gets is a light, forced, uncomfortable sleep. It's one in which he wakes up more tired than he was the night before, but he presses on, getting exercise in during the morning and trying to make breakfast for his mom because he knows a slice of toast is the most she'd bother to have.
And despite all that's changed since his dad has passed, Miles is still a kid. He has a thousand pictures from the time he went to Comic-con, a sketchbook full of drawings he never finishes, meticulously-organised playlists, college applications — all in the midst of a city that's falling apart at the seams as much as he is.
But he's okay, for now. As much as he can be.
"Keep your head up, son."
It's what his dad would've wanted, at the very least.

(Interrupting the Hell Tower Q&A for a moment to show you a redesign of an Oc I haven't drawn since high school)
Diana Jewel
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(The original designs from 2021, I changed her name to Diana because I thought it sounded cooler)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To be honest, when I first created her I just basically stole Strawberry Crêpe Cookie's design from Cookie Run Kingdom. When I first discovered the character I thought they were armless, because of the fact that they hide most of their body under a cape.
I thought it was pretty cool to see an antagonist with a disability, I have never seen something like that at that time. So I guess that creating an OC looking pretty much like them was my way to show my appreciation, I think.
And then I discovered that Strawberry Crêpe Cookie did, indeed, have arms underneath the cape. Whoops.
But even with that discovery, I still thought that the idea of a villain with a disability was still very great, so I decided to make some modifications to my OC. Especially the design, I didn't want to be accused of plagiarism.
Meanwhile I also thought of a backstory and personality, from which I got inspired by the songs "Primadonna", "The Family Jewels" and "Bubblegum B*tch" from Marina and the Diamonds: a privileged girl who grew up in a rich and imperfect family, she has an incredible talent for robotics and mechanics but because of how she was raised she's also very immature and incapable of showing affection (at least, for now).
I have an idea of creating a story with her in it, where, after committing a theft, Diana and a couple of other villains get transferred in a special school of heroes to change their behaviour.
There Diana would learn to grow as a person along with the other characters she meets there, in a world that is basically a combination of "Despicable Me" and "Big Hero 6", that it also makes a commentary about the school system and how it affects its students... But I think I'll stop here, I've already talked enough in this post lmao
But I do like to talk about the many ideas I have in mind, I have many stories that I want to tell yet so little time and energy to talk about and develop them. As for now I'll remain in my comfort zone that is the Pizza Tower fandom, but who knows... Maybe someday I'll be able to tell my own stories to the audience...

23 - Discrimination (Yeah I went there)
Tumblr media
[Text in image is as below]
i) Species;
a) All Sentient Species recognised by Mandalorian Law are completely within right to be adopted, adopt, and live within Mandalore, and Mandalorian Society. b) If a Species wishes to be added to the data base, a General Notice for Recognition can be applied for through the Mandalorian Archive of Galactic Sentients. The Mandalorian Archive of Galactic Sentients will also keep in check genealogy to take notice of the rare cases of possible gene modification and cloning. The Mandalorian Archive of Galactic Sentients is the official government and information authority for all occasions regarding inter-species law in Mandalorian Space. c) Sentient Species cannot be outlawed from sectors or systems – Mandalorian Law stresses the difference between a Species, and its local Governments. For example, a fleeing Zygerrian is not guilty of the crimes of the Zygerrian Empire. d) Sentient Species cannot be barred entry into clubs, pubs or venues due to their species. e) Sentient Species cannot be required or told by schools, family, or others to physically alter traits and physical features that do not cause harm. For example, a Zabracki shall not be demanded to wear a headdress to attend classes for the safety of other students.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Text in images is as below]
ii) Sex;
a) Mandalorian Law recognises separate biological sexes for all documented species under the Mandalorian Archive of Galactic Sentients. b) Mandalore recognises the separate sexes, sub-sexes, and individual genders within the Species Codex held by the Bounty Hunter Guild Associations. c) Mandalore retains its right to utilise the genderless and sexless terms and wordings in day-to-day use. d) Medical Professionals, and those whose services require said information are the only beings within Mandalore allowed to require a response to request of an individual’s sex, species, and gender information. e) Job applications and education shall not require confirmation of sex or gender for acceptance or application. f) Mandalore and the Mandalorian Sector practices the use of a multitude of private and communal refreshers – schools in the Mandalorian sector will tend to have two segregated bathrooms for the two more common humanoid sexes, a disabled bathroom, a unisex bathroom, and the communal bathrooms utilised in most military settings. Individual sectors can offer a differing, or greater range of choices – for example, Ordo Minor, which has the selection of disabled bathrooms, individual bathrooms, and the communal bathrooms with no segregation of any sort. g) Married Mandalorians are not required to inform anyone of their or their spouse’s gender or sex. h) Sex work in Mandalore falls under the Fair Work Acts, and is acceptable under strict and heavily monitored conditions. A Mando’ade who worked in this sector of business is permitted to apply to other forms of employment. Attempts to block applications and transfers of employment is both discriminatory to the Mando’ade’s financial freedoms and their sexual freedoms.
iii) Religious Interpretation;

a) Mando’a’s multitude of accepted forms are not to be excluded, impeded or banned in any way within Mandalorian Space. b) Mando’a is to be taught at every school in Mandalorian Space in the sector’s most common forms. c) No Mando’ade should be barred in any way from learning Mando’a. d) Speaking a Freed language is a protected right, and those found guilty of excluding or discriminating those speaking or who have spoken Freed language fall under Sentient Discrimination and can face charges at both Mandalorian and Galactic Courts. e) Speaking Basic is not banned in any way, but it is not a specific requirement to graduate, educate, be credited or to have a job. f) Basic cannot be a prerequisite in jobs that do not have any relevance to the speaking of the language. For example, a mechanic does not need to speak fluid Basic to practice on Ordo Prime or Manda’yaim. g) Learning to speak, read and write is a Right, not a privilege, and those barring students for financial reasons either in low or high levels of education will be held to account under Mandalorian Law. Learning languages in Mandalore is a Protected Right, and not to be interfered with by external pressures. h) Clan Foundlings wishing to continue to learn their pre-adoption language is a protected right under Mandalorian Law. Foundlings will not be punished for use of their pre-adoption languages.

v) Ability;
a) All Clan members, regardless of their capacity or ability to fight, are crucial to Clan Welfare. b) Clan members, or Mando’ade who are visually or verbally impaired should have allocations made for their comfort and to ease participation in day-to-day life. This includes species that routinely have these impairments, for example, nocturnal species being allowed to be as active as they require at their biologically required hours. c) Clan members, Mando’ade or warriors who have been injured to the point of being removed from combat have completed a great service for their Clan and their community, and any discrimination or exclusion of these Mando’ade is punishable by law. d) Mando’ade born with non-life-threatening defects are to be treated as ordinary Mando’ade under Mandalorian Law. e) Mando’ade born with life-threatening birth defects are catered for under the Public Health Acts, and can even be served at external hospitals around the galaxy under the Mandalorian Resources and Children Protectorate. Parents can make direct calls for assistance to the Mandalorian Protectors, and can expect near immediate response and support in the occasion of life-threatening illness or injury. This is a right under Mandalorian Law. f) Mandalorians with movement impairments, mental impairment and illness, and other neurological discrepancies are protected under Mandalorian Law. In the event of a Neurological Unsound Mando’ade hurting a child, the Mano’ade risks becoming institutionalised. g) Those of impaired, separated, different nature or disposition, and disability are completely able to be charged with serious offences. However, much like criminal justice, intent must be proved for charges such as ‘murder,’ or the charge will simply be held as high degree grievous assault and manslaughter. Ability Impaired Mandalorians will still face a firing squad if found guilty of War Crimes, Child Abuse, or Sexual Assault. h) Mando’ade that cannot live by themselves can either select, or have a carer selected for them out of their Clan or Community that passes Health and Carer Training and Psychological Evaluations. The selection will take place after their diagnosis with impairment. If a Clan member has already been acting as the Mando’ade’s carer, provisioning will be made for that Clan member to have access to appropriate resources and training without separating the Carer from their charge.
[Again, if anyone has any criticism, I am open to any form of assistance you can provide. Sections like this are close to my heart, as I have members of my family who cannot give informed consent, or have a disability that stops them from being able to hold a job. When the time comes, I'm hoping to link a master post for disability and medical beskar'gam symbols to this post so that disabled verde can colour and pattern their armour appropiately, and have it understood.]

What Are the Common Myths About Speech Therapy — and What’s the Truth?
Speech therapy is often misunderstood, with many people holding outdated or incorrect beliefs about who needs it, what it involves, and how effective it really is. These myths can prevent individuals from seeking help, or delay crucial intervention for themselves or loved ones. In this article, we’ll tackle some of the most common misconceptions about speech therapy and provide the facts to help clarify what this important service really offers.
Myth: Speech Therapy is Only for Children
Tumblr media
Truth: Speech Therapy Benefits All Ages
In reality, speech therapy supports people across the entire lifespan — from infants with feeding difficulties to seniors recovering from strokes. Therapists tailor their approaches depending on the age, condition, and goals of each individual. Whether it’s helping a toddler form their first words or guiding an adult through voice therapy, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are equipped to work with all ages.
Common Adult Speech Therapy Needs
Adults may seek speech therapy for a variety of reasons:
Stroke recovery (e.g., regaining language skills after aphasia)
Traumatic brain injuries
Voice disorders affecting quality, pitch, or strength
Progressive conditions like Parkinson’s disease, ALS, or dementia
Speech therapy for adults is not only common but essential for regaining independence and improving quality of life.
Myth: Speech Therapy is Just About ‘Fixing’ Stuttering
Another misconception is that speech therapy only addresses stuttering. While stuttering is an important area of focus, it’s far from the only one.
Truth: Speech Therapy Addresses a Wide Variety of Disorders
SLPs handle a broad spectrum of communication issues including:
Articulation and phonological disorders
Language delays or disorders
Social communication (pragmatic) challenges
Voice and resonance disorders
Swallowing and feeding difficulties (dysphagia)
Examples of Speech Therapy Specializations
Speech therapy includes diverse specialties, such as:
Aphasia rehabilitation for individuals who’ve lost language abilities due to brain injury
Accent modification to enhance communication confidence in multilingual speakers
AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) support for non-verbal individuals using devices or systems to communicate
Myth: Speech Therapy Results are Immediate
Some expect a “quick fix” from therapy and may get discouraged if progress seems slow.
Truth: Speech Therapy is a Gradual Process
Therapy is not a one-size-fits-all solution. It requires time, consistent practice, and patience. Progress depends on factors like the severity of the issue, the individual’s motivation, and how often therapy occurs. Like physical fitness, communication improvement happens over time — not overnight.
Myth: Speech Therapy is Only for People with Speech Disabilities
People often think you must have a diagnosed speech disorder to benefit from therapy. This is simply not the case.
Truth: Speech Therapy Supports a Wide Range of Communication Needs
Even individuals without speech “disabilities” can benefit from therapy. Examples include:
Accent reduction for clearer communication in professional settings
Public speaking coaching
Social communication training for people with ADHD or autism
Early intervention for babies showing potential developmental delays
Myth: Speech Therapy is Expensive and Not Worth It
Cost can be a deterrent, with many assuming therapy is too expensive or not covered by insurance.
Truth: Speech Therapy is a Valuable Investment
While private sessions can be costly, many options are affordable or even free:
Insurance coverage may reduce costs for medically necessary treatment
School-based services provide free therapy for eligible students
Community clinics and telehealth options offer budget-friendly alternatives
Moreover, the long-term benefits — improved communication, confidence, academic and career success — far outweigh the costs.
Conclusion
Speech therapy is a powerful, versatile service that goes far beyond the common stereotypes. It’s not just for kids, it’s not only about stuttering, and it’s not a luxury — it’s a lifeline for millions. Understanding the truth behind these myths can help more people get the support they need. Whether you’re a parent, a professional, or someone recovering from a medical condition, speech therapy might be the key to unlocking better communication and a better quality of life.

So as of yesterday I'm cleared to speak about the overarching project that I get to front for the next three months.  (save for the specific novel AT design I'm presenting at the funding competition)
After a year or so of planning, paperwork, presentations, and getting my ducks in a row I've been approved to design, construct, implement, and inform people about a brand new tiny, community-run assistive technology library. We will also be making a public webpage with instructions on how people can get their own up and running.
It will be stocked with non-custom assistive technologies [AT] people can check out, which is cool. What's also cool is that it will be stocked with educational materials on assistive technologies and most critically: self advocacy in the concept of assistive technology.
So often we (the royal we of doctors, therapists, systems, and people who claim to be helpers but are doing a shit job at times despite their best intentions) tell people the importance of self advocacy and standing up for your rights! Only to usher the patient/student/person-in-need out the door, having been as useful as cancer without having explained any of the words, processes, or practices involved in this concept to the people we are trying to help
The library has 4 specific branches of self advocacy thusfar.
Educational materials designed specifically for people experiencing either permanent or temporary status of low-intellect (could be developmental, or from a head injury with a high chance of recovery)
educational materials designed for people entering the workforce with a disability who need to be able to SAFETLY advocate for AT, or environmental modifications. This one is for my brother who learned to advocate in highschool and then showed up to job interviews self-disclosing AT the interviewers and telling them what he would need because he was so used to this being the way to handle advocacy with his teachers. Advocating in the workplace is preparing for a battle and you need to know what kinds of tricks, traps, and biases are waiting for you and how to pre-plan for them rather than react in the moment.
educational materials focusing on self advocacy for adult-students. Your colleges and universities will likely have some resources available, heres how to get them, when you should disclose disability status, and some tips and tricks for how to support yourself in a campus community
educational materials designed (im soooo excited for this one, I worked really hard to get this one in here!) for children and NOT their parents. Self advocacy with children is either only covered in juvinile contexts "remember to say no to bullies~"  and not actual concrete here is how to advocate for your needs as a disabled child. Maybe you have a wonderfully supportive and present family and you just want to practice advocating at 504 meetings before heading off to college. Maybe you have a wonderfully supportive family who CANT be present, and so you need to advocate for yourself when they can't be there. Maybe you don't have a supportive homelife... but you still need to learn to advocate for your health,
I have a shoestring budget. And 3 (three) other people helping me. The gods themselves could not give me more or I would use the resources available to me to dethrone them, so for now we settle on making the best little AT library in the community we can.  It WILL fuck severely.

i think part of why jirous hearing aid & prosthetic jack is hitting hard is how precious and specially made for her it is...
obviously the worst part of the injury was how violatingly personal it was. it was one of the most brutal scenes in the whole series. we were always told her jacks were industructible and yeah, they are... but ears arent. it felt so unfair that she had to be hurt so intensely in an end game with so relatively few injuries..
the thing is, her recovery feels even more personal. this was surely a unique device, custom made for her! as a UA student and war hero she probably got top of the line care from a truly talented doctor and prosthetic designer. just based on the blocky tech design and seemingly extendable new jack, they may have taken considerations to not only replace her quirk but also leave room for hearing amplifications and noodle modifications, who knows. theres no denying her hero career is still just starting thanks to their help
but more than that.. shes going to be such cool disabled rep, or at least I really hope so! its highly thematically relevant. shes amplified her powers through technology and innovation since the very start. she was basically born as a chimera of machine and human elements, to some degree. she also has some of the best and most supportive friends in the whole series, both of whom tie into this! like seriously, can you not picture momo getting to know jirous doctor so she can learn how to make custom parts and modifications or do repairs? literally WHO ELSE is charging her batteries besides kaminari? you have to imagine they were there with her at the first meetings, its an absurdly good symbol of their bonds and I'm pretty happy imagining their future helping each other even further through things like this
all in all, I'm just so much happier than I thought I could be from this resolution and I seriously hope it resonates with other people too

Fall 2024 disability talks and screenings
On October 16th 2024 I (Margot) I had the privilege of having gave four presentations on disability. I spoke to two medical student classes about disability and bioethics such as how many disability rights activists see euthanasia and medical assistance in dying, and certain genetic testing, as a violation of disability rights (Not Dead Yet 2024). This conversation highlighted the importance of understanding how society views disability and the ethical implications that arise from these views. I discussed how side effects of medications can be disabling, and how invisible physical disabilities can sometimes be misdiagnosed and therefore dismissed as psychological disorders. It’s vital for future healthcare professionals to recognize that not all disabilities are visible and that the impact of treatments can vary greatly among individuals. Then I spoke to a group of college faculty about accessible teaching strategies like UDL. Last I spoke to a class of special education teachers, and paraprofessionals about accessibility and my life story.
On October 24th 2024 I spoke to another class of students learning to be general education and special education about the film “A Stroke Of Endurance” and modifications that can be made and addressing both mental and physical disability. This session highlighted the importance of recognizing each student’s unique needs and the role of educators in facilitating their success.
On December 5th I screened “Drama Sighted” for another group of teaching students to discuss the impacts of bullying of disabled students. The conversation turned into a discussion of “A Stroke Of Endurance” when an audience member mentioned they knew someone who had died of an ischemic stroke recently. One student said they thought Crip Video Productions main mission was to let disabled people know they matter and are valued.

No one in this party is mentally stable
Lae'zel: religious fanatic with a strong superiority complex. Yes, I know that's racial, but it's still true. No one gets that way by accident; and it's pretty clear that this is taught behavior.
Shadowheart: victim of cult behavior, kidnapped, brainwashed, tortured
Astarion: PTSD oozing from his pores. used, abused and tortured.
Gale: look he seems like a dorky wizard but there is a strong feeling of depression and a little bit of a suddenly disabled parallel. throw in a touch of 'washed out honor's student'
Wyll: is it okay if I say daddy issues? hero complex. Some parallels to coming out and being thrown out, but that's not one to one. He did choose to be a warlock, even if he was manipulated into it.
Karlach: betrayed, enslaved, non consensual body modification, touch starvation. Even though she'd chosen a life of violence in being a bodygaurd, I don't think it counts as a choice by the time we meet her. I can't help but feel some of her cheerfulness is a mask. terminal illness parallels
Halsin: probably closest, but you don't have guilt like that for that long without having it weigh you down.
Edit: I haven't even finished the game once yet, so please feel free to add your own commentary on their mental states!
