Do you have any headcanons about Rohan’s folklore? What kind of fairy tales did they have (if any)? Superstitions? Thank you so much, and welcome back! Love to see more of you on my dash! 😊
This is such a great and fun question! It’s a big topic and one with a TON of room for creativity. I can’t say that I’ve built all this out in my HC yet, but I can give a start/framework based on a few things that I already had in mind or that make sense to me.
For folklore, which I think of as the culture expressed through poems, songs, stories, etc., I can imagine three big categories. (These categories exclude straight-up history, which the Rohirrim also document and transmit through song, poetic sagas, etc.)
Legends: These would be traditional tales that have some basis in historical fact but have become embellished or fictionalized over time. The Rohirrim have a TON of these about their most famous ancestors, like Fram, the slayer of the dragon Scatha, or Mahrwini, who led refugees out of enslavement at the hands of the Easterlings and wandered Rhovanion for years before eventually settling and establishing the Éothéod. These were all important people who did big things, but the legends really amp them up to an 11/10 on the hero scale.
Myths: These are stories, songs, etc. that have no basis in history or science but are used to explain the unknowable things about the world around them, like where stars came from, what happens when you die, etc. Some of the Rohirrim’s myths overlap with the mythology of the elves and Gondor (i.e., the Silmarillion) because those stories are in wide circulation and were adopted. So they’ve got tales of Béma (Oromë) riding among their ancestors, teaching them horsemanship, etc. But they also have some that their own ancestors invented, like the tale of the herd of magical wild boar who raced across the plains and created the tracks and gullies that rain would fill to create the Entwash and the Snowbourn rivers.
Fables/fairy tales: Much like us, they have a bunch of entirely fictional little stories – often centered around animals of Rohan – that were created to teach children important lessons about morality, ethics or safety. So they might have a story about Wrenna, a little bird who wouldn’t share a bounty of summer berries with his fellow birds and then froze to death when they wouldn’t let him back into the flock’s root nest once winter came. This is meant to teach the importance of group cohesion and fulfilling commitments for mutual support and allegiance.
Superstitions are really fun to think about, and I find them much easier to come up with on the fly. Some of the superstitions that I like (based either on traits of Rohan that were already directly in my HC or that I’d adapt from real life) are:
They leave little hunting-related offerings for Béma when they’re hoping for his intervention in life events.
They never pick or display white flowers, as those are associated with death.
The day in spring when the first foal of the year is born is considered a particularly lucky day. Any human babies born on that same day are thought to be destined for greatness.
If you ever sound your horn indoors, you’re inviting defeat in your next battle.
Every stable has a small statue or carved figurine of Felaróf, the first of the mearas. People rub Felaróf’s nose when arriving at the stable in the morning to guarantee themselves a good ride, so the nose of every statue always ends up being slightly shinier/a different color than the rest of it.
If you sneeze once, it means a friend is thinking of you and will bring you good news. If you sneeze twice, an enemy is thinking of you and you should check to make sure your sword is sharpened. (If you sneeze three or more times, you’re just sick and need to go to the healers.)
I could make those all day, but then this post would be even longer than it already is, so I’ll stop there. But if anyone else wants to throw in ideas, please do! And thank you for the Ask! ♥️ It’s nice to be back and chatting about Rohan again with you all! 🗡️🐎👑

Wildcard AU: reading through this, I realize not many personas were discussed for the Dekusquad, and so, I wanted to give my two cents on who would own which hero, and maybe what their persona does.
Iida: Pheidippides, the one who ran from Marathon to Athens to tell of the Greek's victory against the Persians at the battle of Marathon (where the sport gets the name from) before dying of exhaustion. Wind element with accuracy Debuffs.
Todoroki: Merlin, know for being the advisors to the "Main" hero of the stories (Uther and Arthur Pendragon), with magical powers from an unnatural birth. Magic Damage buffs and single-target elemental spells.
Uraraka: Princess Kaguya, daughter to bamboo cutters (commoners), who grants wealth to her parents from her presence, only to be later out of reach by her own desires. Light element attacks (assuming light can do damage like P5) and Ailment inflicting skills.
Asui: I'd like it to be Jiraiya, but that's been done in P4, so I'm not sure. Electric damage skills and accuracy/evasion buffs.
Yaoyorozu: Boudica, Queen of the Inceni Brittish people and "Lady of Victory" who led an (unsuccessful) uprising against the Roman empire. Navigational (as stated prior)
Inko: Lemminkäinen, Finnish hero who dies in the rivers of the underworld, who's mother fished his remains out with a magic rake, before putting him back together. It would have been the mother instead, but I cannot find her name anywhere. Healing and ailment/debuff neutralizing.
Bakugo: Achilles, one the other most known heroes of Greek myth (mirroring Midoriya), who was a great warrior and invincible in battle, save for a fatal flaw. Physical attack and fire skills with Amps, resistant to physical damage, but not immune.
Eri: Deirdre (as stated), Irish heroine who's beauty was prophesized to bring bloodshed that would kill the three greatest warriors of Ulster. Healing and Ice element magic.
All Might: Samuel Steele, Canadian Mountie and "Lion of the Yukon" who kept the peace between Canadian settlers and the First nation people, and made the Klondike Goldrush into one of the most organized goldrushes in history. Physical attacks and defensive buffs.
Interesting choices. I mentioned Uraraka having Atlanta once but I'm flexible on that if I like something else better. I should also note that not all of Midoriya's social links will end up with Personas of their own.
It hasn't come up but I did decide that Bakugou's eventual Persona is Mwindo

Elemental affinities in Persona 4
Someone on Reddit asked about the correlation between elemental affinities and the characters. Kinda interesting to think about it. 🤔 I think Kanji and Yukiko have really straightforward ones but the rest of them I am winging.
Protag / Starter Izanagi: Strong to thunder, blocks dark, weak to wind Yosuke: Strong to wind, weak to thunder, gains fire resist
The protag's affinity with thunder and starting with Zio spells might be due to mythology? While Izanagi was not a god of thunder, there is a part in the myth where Izanami attacks him with a hoard of thunder gods and he wards them off. The dark resist might be because Izanagi gets out of the underworld and then purifies himself.
Yosuke's 2nd/3rd Personas being Susanoo might be where his wind affinity comes from. Stories about Susanoo are about the sea, but he is also considered a storm god. So, wind, I-I guess?
Yosuke's Persona being weak to thunder feels like a gameplay thing since you only have Izanagi when you fight his shadow. Though them being opposites could also reflect their relationship. Like how Yosuke is the one who wanted to throw Namatame into the TV, and the protagonist is the one who has to snap him out of it. Or how the protagonist is the leader, but Yosuke is the mouthpiece.
Chie: Strong to ice, weak to fire, gains light resist Yukiko: Strong to fire, weak to ice, gains dark resist
Yukiko's elemental affinities definitely correlate with folklore and mythology. On April 30th, she brings instant noodles to the school rooftop. Kitsune udon for her, and tanuki soba for Chie. The kitsune and tanuki are two figures who come up in folklore, and Yukiko appears to be "kitsune coded" while Chie is "tanuki coded".
Kitsune are correlated with the color red and also with fire. Additionally, her first Persona, Konohana Sakuya, is also a deity related to flowers and volcanoes. Her 2nd/3rd Personas are Amaterasu who is associated with the sun. Volcanoes and sun fit the fire image.
Chie and Yukiko being weak to one another matches their folklore counterparts. The kitsune and tanuki, or characters representing them, are usually pit against one another. I think the most famous tale is Danzaburo? It can also be seen as a reflection of their relationship, and how their shadows distorted their feelings for one another into jealousy.
(Yukiko being weak to ice is kinda funny given that her name means "child of snow".)
Kanji: Strong to thunder, weak to wind, gains physical resist
Kanji's 1st Persona is a thunder god, so his affinity with thunder is pretty straightforward, as with Yukiko and fire. Wind is Yosuke's element, so him being weak to wind might reflect how Yosuke is pretty good at winding Kanji up.
Teddie: Strong to ice, weak to thunder, gains wind/dark resist
I correlate Teddie having an ice affinity Persona with the origin of his 2nd and 3rd Personas. The word Kamuy (Kamui) is from Japanese Ainu mythology, and the Ainu are indigenous to snowy Hokkaido. A Kamuy is a being of reverence and it's believed they walk around on earth as bears! So this is really appropriate for Teddie.
I have 0 thoughts about Teddie being weak to thunder. Maybe shared with Yosuke cause they live together - "We ride together, we get hit by Maziodyne and die together"?
Teddie and Chie having the same element seems like a gameplay thing. Chie only gets the single target spells, never gets ice boost/amp, and is more of a physical DPS with ice as a bonus. It's like how in P3, Junpei learned single target fire magic while Koromaru got the single target and AoE fire magic.
Naoto: Strong to light/dark, gains fire resist
Naoto having light and dark seems more like a gameplay thing to cover the remaining elements not used by the cast. Her 1st Persona is Sukunabikona, who is associated with hot springs and their healing properties, and also booze (I think) rather than light/dark.
Her 2nd Persona is a prince of Japan's imperial line, and her 3rd Persona is a title for the Emperor. The imperial family are supposedly descendants of Amaterasu (Yukiko's 2nd/3rd Personas), and the Amaterasu in this game is a pyromaniac. Naoto gaining fire resist on her awakening from Bikona to Yamato might be because of the mythological ancestry.
(Also, for those of you who never played Persona 4 on PS2, Naoto originally didn't have all 4 elements... Only Mudo/Hama/Megido... Suffering...)

hey you should tell me your ideal Pokémon team 🥺, because I like Pokémon very much atm
EEEEE POKÉMON!!!
I don’t talk about Pokémon very much but oh my gods I will SO tell you my ideal team.
Okay so; my lineup probably looks like
Serperior
Obstagoon
Sylveon
Toxtricity
Gallade
Falinks
And now I will explain why. Take into account that I don’t take any type weaknesses really into account when I make teams because usually I am headstrong enough to just boulder through any challenges.
First off my baby, my favorite starter Pokémon Serperior
Tumblr media
That’s my guy; I’d name mine Commodus or smth like that. It’d probably have the basic ability, I’d put more stats in it being my little fast physical attacker to pack some nice little punches and then dissapear and be my baby. It’s moveset probably is uh, magical leaf, leech seed, bullet seed, and breaking swipe :3
All of these are some of my favorite Pokémon but the next one up is Obstagoon,
Tumblr media
Specifically if I could it’d be a shiny Obstagoon, maybe named Brutus or Cassius for the funnies (if anyone can’t tell all of my main first teams in pkm games get named after Roman’s for haha funny jokes that only I find haha funny). I’d probably try and get a Obstagoon with Guts as an ability for the vibes or whatever. Movepool would probably be obstruct, throat chop, x-scissor, and close combat
Sylveon is actually my #1 favorite Pokémon of all time and is required on all of my teams,
Tumblr media
There’s Clodius lol (please my Sylveon always ends up being my bruiser too) but I’d keep a cute charm sylveon and my moveset would be. Draining kiss, disarming voice, psyshock, and play rough.
If anyone can tell I play Pokémon in a very “offense is the best defense” way, guns a blazing and all that jazz.
Next up is toxtricity,
Tumblr media
I’d want an amped form Toxtricity and I’d name it like. Nero lol maybe Quinctilius even (gods know that when I try to get one I’m getting to number 5 before I got one with the right nature) but I’d figure out a witty funny name for it. The move pool would probably be, overdrive, toxic spikes, sludge bomb, and discharge (P.S this would be my gigantamax Pokemon in sword and shield)
Also Gallade :3 I like Gallade, a silly little knight.
Tumblr media
His name would be Luci (short for Lucius Junius Brutus because I had to slip in one of my favorite Roman myth guys in there) he’d be my mega pokemon and it’d be silly. I’d try to get Justified but if not a sharpness Gallade would be fire too. Its movepool would be something like, psycho cut, psybeam, aura sphere, and close combat.
Finally, we have Falinks, the boy!!
Tumblr media
His name would be Pompey. He’d be a silly group of guys. It’d have no retreat just because I like the animation, megahorn, brick break, and rock slide
That’s it :3 honorable mentions probably go to mimikyu, dedenne, meowstick, pidove line, primarina, meowscarada, and others. This is just the team I’d probably roll with and uh. I like pokemon :3 I don’t take any of the technical aspect seriously but there’s like story in the team and stuff

The Four Seasons
Aka: Things About Jack and Mother Nature That I Totally Made Up But Drive Me Absolutely CRAZY BATSHIT INSANE. For Mother's Day!
Jack learned how to avalanche surf from her. He saw her surf down a massive rockslide once and went I WANNA DO THAT! SHOW ME NOW!!
The one and only ability that they share in its entirety is Wind Shifting (turning one's form into wind/air fronts). Mother Nature has a lot of variations of this ability, with leaves and petals and clouds and such, while Jack just has the snowy version.
And this is the first ability she ever taught him, out of necessity for fast travel when taking over seasonal duties.
They used to go for casual flights like this, and the whispering winds myth came about from these two talking while flying.
The other very small thing that they share is that Jack can actually hear Evergreens! In the same way that MN can hear all plants/flora, Jack has the same thing but only with evergreens, and very very faintly with mountains. But only if he sits up at a certain altitude where it snows, and only then it's more like a murmur.
Using the wind power thing, Jack has actually broken MN's wind speed record ONCE (1). He got real buck wild during the Blizzard of 1934 in Washington that year and capped out at 231 mph.
But he was such an ANNOYING SORE WINNER about it for actual DECADES that Mother Nature shut him right the hell up and beat THAT record with her own 253 mph winds in Australia and 1996. She still reigns supreme to this day.
Father Time sees a lot of similarities between the two and often regards both their intelligence and ambition as the most obvious to him.
Mother Nature got Jack into music/singing. There's a whole passage about how this came about reserved for the CC finale but it's my favorite thing.
They both cannot STAND the groundhog. He's a magical enigma and buts in with his own weather advice and annoy the both of them to no end.
When Jack was created Mother Nature's temperature regulation went kinda out of whack, so without any winter magic in her system she tends to run warm and is prone to heat flashes and overheats easier than before (Exacerbated by global warming).
She's the one that got him into music/singing when he was still very young, before he could permafrost. He got hooked on it as an art form/hobby from the beginning and I have a little passage about it right here! It's meant to show up somewhere in the CC finale but it's actually my favorite thing.
Tumblr media
She doesn't sing very much at all in public, not for an audience at any rate. It’s mostly reserved as a self-soothing habit she indulges in when alone. But the crowd tonight is amped, and they haven't heard her sing in centuries, in this instance it would be impossible to say no. The soft piano and building orchestrals cue her intro and the collective skins of all who were present ignited with goosebumps. Shivers up spines and a pang in their chests. The heavens open. The instrumental in the background gives way and makes room for her voice. Confidently ringing out to all corners of the tower with a powerful vibrato. But it also carries a sad current of sentimentality that softens the edge just a bit. Lucy and Charlie were just as enthralled as the rest of the public, not even daring to utter a noise during any of this. But Jack standing next to them was frozen in place, haunted looking.  A deep and ancient recognition lighting his eyes, a voice from his “youth” he never truly forgot but hasn't heard in a long time. Too long. Hearing every word as if it was the only noise in the room, forgetting where he actually was for just a moment. An instant, catapulted back in time. Shaking him to his severed core. He went looking for Mother Nature for a reason that has been lost to him for millennia, went searching for her in the meadows she frequents but he found Father Time instead. He was sitting on the ground with his back against a large birch tucked in the tree line, his eyes peacefully closed.  Jack was not afraid about ruining his moment and was going to ask where the council head had gone to but was promptly shushed by Father Time’s staff waving at him. He didn't say anything but put a single finger to his lips and mimed for him to listen. It took him a few attempts at starting a sentence before he finally kept quiet. And when he stopped, and strained, this was the voice he heard. Dulled by some innocuous distance away, but a voice like liquid gold that resonated with something intrinsic in his being that he could not explain. With only the birds and the breeze as her accompaniment.  A voice, a song that he couldn't forget if he tried. He remembers sitting with Father Time and just, listening to her sing. A habit that Mother Nature couldn't ever shake and a guilty pleasure that Father Time had developed. To sit and listen to her when she was harmlessly unaware.  Jack remembers that moment, that single instance of secretly listening to the woman sing, clear as still water. One never really forgets a moment such as that when their mother is the central pillar of their whole world. The awe of the moment crashes into him again in the present, causing his heart to skip a beat when the instruments fade back in. But the scariest thing was how unchanged she sounds. His memory of a time he used to wish long forgotten was still perfectly correct. She sounds incredible.

the price of your greed
Tumblr media
Stefan should've known it was going to blow up in his face the second Klaus suggested he help dagger Kol. Particularly after how everything went down the last time he’d helped Klaus to dagger one of his siblings. That creeping feeling of trepidation had only grown when Elena too had come to him with her own plan. Two conflicting plans all to put down one Original for a cure that had apparently already led to two separate massacres. He was starting to wonder whether it was worth it if it demanded such a high price just to find it. What would happen when it was finally within their grasp?
-༺₊⋆☾⁺₊༻-
"I don't wanna just dagger Kol, I want Jeremy to kill him." Elena's words had already registered before Stefan foolishly tried to disguise them with the revving of his bike.
Really mate? You should know better, had the 20s taught you anything? He wasn't some common halfling vampire that could be stumped by mere parlor tricks. It appeared he'd grown soft, let the Mystic Fools believe they were safe from retribution after all their plots against him, especially Finn's death. Well, it was time he rectified that. He'd already lost one brother after keeping him safely tucked away for 900 hundred years, he wouldn't let their hubris take another from him.
Damon's death had been swifter than he'd liked but the young vampire had never seen it coming and that was what had mattered in the moment. Time was of the essence to save his little brother, he'd already lost his youngest, the Other Side wouldn't claim Kol as well. So one second he'd been beyond the barred door and the next he was in front of the weakened vampire. Damon had barely enough time to turn at the sound of the door screeching open before he was dead, and Klaus was gone.
"If you're going to threaten me again Klaus, you can save your breath." Were the first words out of Kol's mouth before he'd even had a chance to speak.
"It seems your paranoia has gotten ahead of you, brother." Klaus ignored the scoff and muttered 'You'd know' that followed. "The Gilbert's are planning to kill you."
The line went deadly silent as Kol came to a stop, Klaus could just hear the grinding of his brother's teeth over the line but that was enough for him to picture the murderous expression he must be adorning.
"Are they now?"
For all the Mystic Falls bunch believed him to be the biggest monster, it was Kol that had garnered the more volatile and bloodied reputati on in the supernatural world of the two. It was Kol that the older sirelings feared. The ones that were old enough to have seen the Originals in the flesh, to have watched the myths about them be born. The ones that knew if Kol had appeared at your door then no amount of pleading would save you. Kol was no wolf, he had no need for the extended chase that Klaus had subjected Katherine to. The hunt only served to amp up the fear and apprehension in Kol's eyes.
Because Kol had been a witch - not a wolf - before their turning he knew that the torment was what really made the death significant, it was the suffering beforehand that ensured the earth would be scorched with the magic of their death. And it was something that Kol specialized in as a vampire.
"Well, you can forget about suggesting I return the daggers for my own safety. With the way you've all been fumbling over yourselves for this cure for your darling former blood bag, I don't trust that you won't just serve my daggered body over to them. This cure has clearly blinded you to any sibling loyalty you once felt." And with that, the line went dead.

International Fanworks Day: Feedback Fest Recs
Or, a list of wonderful crossover on AO3 that you really, REALLY should read. Originally written down in the comments to this post, which you also really, really should check out.
In A Strange Land (Nibelungenlied/Parzival): The Medieval literature rare crossover I didn't know I needed in my life. Laugh-out-loud funny, taking full advantage of the differences in tone, narrative structure, and storytelling devices between the poems it's based on in an elegantly sharp way that's absolutely irresistible and of the various traditions behind those same poems. So clever I periodically reread it. Also, specifically for the other nerds following this blog: great Hagen and Volker voices.
Tea Journal (Strange Magic/Fables): A story that uses the worldbuilding of one work to highlight the characterization of the other and bring it to its full potential, taking the readers on a journey moving smoothly from romance to drama to fluff, angsty and tender and fun and sexy until it reaches a beautiful, moving conclusion.
When Wart met the Doctor (Doctor Who/The Once and Future King): A fic I have craved since reading a certain tiny little line in The Sword in The Stone, using an inconsequential moment in the canon to build up a short yet delightful scene full of wonder and fun.
Identity Crisis (Prince of Tennis/Yuri!!! On Ice): A subtly cracky romp that brings two stubborn, prickly characters together via two adorable, fluffy cats with an attitude. How can you not love even just the premise!?
The Pendragon-Gorlois Family Reunion (The Historically Inaccurate Remix) (Good Omens/Arthurian Mythology): A cute, fun story with some nice moments of quiet, understated angst in between, finding thoroughly entertaining ways to play with Good Omens' wit and humor, Arthuriana's penchant for telling the same story in fundamentally different ways and amp up the drama whenever it can, and even certain things taken from Merlin BBC and its fandom. Which is fair, because it was written as a remix of a story about Crowley and Aziraphale watching the show, making it a lovely display of fannish creativity in more ways than one.
Green (Mad Mad: Fury Road/Norse Religion & Lore): A story about redemption, death, and growth and healing -- in that order. As the tags say, it's all about "turning patriarchal myths on their heads." A great rec if you were fascinated by the Norse mythology references in Fury Road, spent way too much time pondering over the the writers possibly slipping in a few more implicit ones (okay, maybe that’s just me), were always fascinated by Loki's children and appreciative of more positive takes on them, were always thrilled by kinder takes on death and the afterlife in general, and/or simply felt for Nux while watching the movie.
