Kali Uchis: ORQUÍDEAS

Review: This album was a fantastic start for new music coming out in 2024. I love Kali’s music, and this album really stood out for me among everything I’ve heard from her. While I don’t think it’s a perfect album, there’s so much here to enjoy.

To be clear, I don’t speak Spanish. I don’t know what she’s saying, but I think the atmosphere of each song speaks enough to that to piece together the emotions and general song content. When I first heard Te Mata I must have listened to it a dozen times in a row. That song is so beautiful. The energy on songs like Muñekita and Dame Beso/Muevete hypes me the hell up. Some other great moments come in the grooves of Perdiste and the opening repetition of ¿Cómo Así? along with the collaboration with KAROL G on Labios Mordidos. When I come back to this album for a full listen, I don’t skip a song.

That being said, no skips doesn’t mean perfect. There are a few songs that don’t stay with me as much as the aforementioned tracks. I don’t think they’re bad, I just don’t think they present anything new in Latin Pop or do anything particularly special. I’m overdue for another run through (I’m writing this months after my prime listening time) so maybe I’ll make some edits when that happens.

All in all, I like this album. If it weren’t for “Brat and it’s the same but there’s three more songs so it’s not” this would be my favorite female led project. In my opinion, Kali Uchis’ “ORQUÍDEAS” is an Amazing project.
