#Old Parents

Visiting my parents for a week, because these things happened at the same time:

My dad is going blind. He's been in the hospital for a few days so they can try to reverse it or at least slow it down, but things don't look good.

My mom slipped on the ice and fractured her shoulder. She's in a lot of pain, and needs a lot of help.

I hadn't planned on like, moving here, but until I can see my mom get in and out of bed without my help, and see my dad manage to either make a sandwich by himself Or learn to ask for help, I don't really feel like I can go home.

I really do miss my bed though. And my computer. And a warmer temperature, because it is coooold here. I'm supposed to go home this weekend so they can see how well they handle things on their own, but it seems like I'll have to go back next week again.

I feel like no one talks about this part of being the youngest child.

Being the last one in your house when your parents had children late.

You help your parents walk. You noticed all the little things they do now that they always need you, they're just like you.

You hear them constantly complain and shout, you hate it but the guilt is worse.

You do all their little things for them as they did for you.

Mom's hair would be completely gray if she stopped dying it.

You watch them watch all their friends die.

Your mom wanted to go back to school.

Your parents thought they would own a house.

Your dad wanted a patio

and mom wanted a garden.

They can't clean like they used to

they can't read like they used to.

You do it for them

they did it all for you.

Mom can't remember what she did today And dad can't tell the time.

They still have to work.

My parents met in 1980 and in 1990 after having 4 kids together, they finally got married. Then in 1997 when my mom was 43 she started having symptoms of menopause, or so she thought..

She went to the doctor and they told her she was actually just pregnant with lil ole me 👹🥹

i don't really like when people say dungeon meshi is accidentally good autistic representation, because while i understand not wanting to make conclusions without explicit confirmation from the author, there's always the weird assumption that non-western authors somehow don't know about things like neurodivergency/queerness/etc. (on top of the assumptions that east asian authors are somehow more naive or oblivious to "western" social issues).

given that dungeon meshi started being published in 2014, it's not really a "work belonging to its times"—it's as contemporary as any other media we discuss on this site, which means it should be fair to assume it engages with contemporary topics (and at the very least, you shouldn't say that the representation is accidental with so much confidence)

but anyways, the chapter "perfect communication" in ryoko kui's "terrarium in a drawer" is some of the most straightforward autistic representation I've seen, and from now on I'm going to assume that laios's character writing is absolutely intentional in that regard:

Favio said the owner of the demolition company came by yesterday to see the property and learn the scope of work. Favio requested an estimate and in true-Spanish form wanted a clause that any work STARTED wouldn't be paid until the work was COMPLETE. Amusing to my American ears, especially when dealing with contractors.

2. We started a group chat with the Architect.

3. I contacted another (or the same) three fence installation companies (again).

4. School started 9 days ago and already the Kid's teacher requested a parent meeting in the Guidance Office. Yikes. My anxiety is high. It's clouding my parenting and wife-ing.

5. Cleaned the chicken coop. So satisfying.

Bonus 6. Received validation from the Play Therapist regarding my opinion of educating the Kid. That felt good.

I had to go to a different veterinary clinic this weekend because my usual place is only open weekdays, and the vet was so rough with Grim, for no reason 🥲 like Grim was purring and trying to headbutt this lady and doing cute little meows (despite being so ill that she was gagging and mouth-breathing), and then this lady SCRUFFS HER to get her onto the scale. and continues to use excessive force in pinning her down for the examination. I've been to 12 years worth of vets with Grim, and I've never seen someone act this way. it was so stressful.

on the bright side thought, this vet was obviously component in other areas, because the meds are already working. she's on antibiotics and something to help her airways open (because the throat infection triggered pre-existing asthma), and it's obvious she feels so much more comfortable.

if you’re young and transmasc and the people in your life haven’t been great about the whole thing and you’re starting to feel like it might be easier to just give up and pretend to be the person they want you to be, i need you to hold on. because the thing is, one second you’re 16 and a future where you get to make decisions about your own body and life feels so impossibly far away and you can’t imagine living like this for that long, but then you blink and it’s been six years and you’re in your car with the music blasting and your voice is lower than the guy in the song’s and your hair is long for the first time in a decade because you’re finally confident enough to grow it out again on your own terms and your chest hasn’t been weighed down in months and it’s the freest you’ve ever felt in your life and i promise it will be worth the wait. don’t give up on yourself.

once again thinking about jason as duke’s robin. he’s ~4 years younger than jason, and that puts him at 8-12 during Jason’s time as robin. that’s prime time to get attached to your local kid vigilante before your own life goes downhill.

and if we try to keep duke’s meeting with bruce in zero year + duke’s age (so he can remember the meeting and hold that conversation with bruce), he has to be around 8. if he starts following batman through the news at that time because of the mess that just happened, the robin he sees is probably jason. I’ve literally connected the dots
