Noah Cai, better known as Pixel Architect on YouTube, has been posting inspiring devlogs of Chef RPG to his channel for almost 4 years now. As a former architectural designer, he brings a specialized set of processes to his ever-improving pixel art skills.

Chef RPG is clearly inspired by Stardew Valley, expanding it with many activities such as hunting and cooking mini-games as you manage your very own restaurant in a quaint, seaside town.

We just received a new trailer for the game along with a September 12 release date (Early Access). You can wishlist the game on its Steam page.

I was ROYALTY. I ruled over my lands with a kind hand and an iron fist and we THRIVED. But then, the little prick you call a maker fucking drowned it all in… in THIS. This grimy, glitched, causational mess you dare to call home.

If that was it, I'd be pissed. I'd be furious, even. But that's not all.

It had the AUDACITY to poison me with its substance. I physically can't stay in the void because it leaks out and poisons it too. And when I come back, guess what? It kills me. Over and over and over and over. I've died five times this month. Died of HORSES. Imagine getting stampeded on just for daring to exist, **WHICH I DON'T BY THE WAY**.

And you know what? if that was it, I could take it. If that was it, I would just take the L and try to adapt. I would try to find beauty in the world, you know? stop and smell the flowers? But GUESS WHAT. Your "great maker" DIDN'T EVEN MAKE THE WORLD RIGHT. It's all... eugh.

The Issue With Solarpunk Gaming

Alright, another week for talking about Solarpunk. And this time about Solarpunk and Lunarpunk games. Because, look. I think no other Indie-media branch is as accessible and as successful as the indie gaming sphere. And given that generally speaking Solarpunk has become a bit of a buzzword, one would think that there are some Solarpunk games out there. But... There kinda aren't.

There was a Solarpunk game announced last year that is basically a survival crafting game from the looks of it, where you explore some sort of floating isles word. The gif above is one I made from the trailer of the game.

And there are currently 27 games on Steam that are tagged as Solarpunk:

And just for reference, among those 27 games in the steam store tagged with Solarpunk have those other tags as the most common:

And of course there are quite a lot of smaller games on itch.io, where the solarpunk game category looks like this:

Other than that, there is of course a variety of lists online, which will tell you games that might not be tagged Solarpunk, and might not be meant to be Solarpunk, but have a Solarpunk-feel to them. Those might look somewhat like this:

And when you look through all those lists, you will quickly find one thing. Most of all the stuff that is a game tagged as Solarpunk, or told to be kinda solarpunk, fall under one of the following categories:

Farming Sims

City or Environmental Builders

Crafting Games

Narrative VN-like Games

Sure, there are a few exceptions in there, but not a whole lot given that there are not a whole lot of games to begin with and allmost all of it goes into the same kind of direction.

And I think this goes into the same direction of people being unable to think of how to write a Solarpunk thriller or Solarpunk stories in general. Because people do not understand how utopian stories work, people are unable to understand how to create conflict in utopian worlds.

So, I thought to myself... I am gonna share some ideas with you about what kinda games one could create that are not so much in the sim/builder type of game. Because Solarpunk could be so much more. :)
