Seeing the Body as a Symbol- Symbolic Interactionism and Plastination

What do we see when we look at a plastinated body? A former person-or just a preserved specimen?

Symbolic interactionism is a sociological theory that focuses on how human interaction creates and exchanges meaning. It's used to understand how people interpret objects, behaviors, and roles in everyday life. One of its key insights is that meaning isn't inherent- we create meaning based on context and interaction.

Plastination as a Social Symbol

Visitors who encounter plastinated corpses in exhibits like Body Worlds rarely see them as people. The cadaver's faces are often removed, their organs exposed, and they're posed in theatrical positions. This shapes how we interpret them- not as an individual who once was, but as symbols of science, learning, or even art.

As Walter (2004) put it, these preserved bodies evoke "awe at the intricacy... of real human bodies that is rarely evoked by pictures, models, and computer simulations." Yet, this fascination also detaches us from the humanity of the body itself.

Dehumanization Through Abstraction

Lawrence Burns (2007) writes that plastinates "have no faces, no smells, and one does not cut into them... it is easy for the viewer to abstract the plastinated specimen from the person who formerly lived." This shows how symbolic meaning is redefined: a once-social body becomes an object, devoid of identity, emotion, or context.

Why It Matters Sociologically

By applying symbolic interactionism, we understand plastination not just as a medical process but as a cultural performance. It reflects how we construct meanings around the body, especially after death. The question becomes: Are we learning from these bodies or simply consuming them as symbols?

The more I think about it, the more I question Arcane S2's politics and themes, which were so foundational to S1. Like, a tiny example [SPOILERS AHEAD]:

Singed wins. He gets exactly what he wants in the end. All his "efforts" are rewarded. What does that say about people who share his ideology of eugenics? He is the source of nearly every horrible thing and conflict that happened (Shimmer, the factory deaths, Jinx, Vander as Warwick, the corruption of Viktor), and he gets a happier ending than any other character. Not even a 'he got what he wanted but he has become completely unrecognizable/monstrous to his daughter' tag at the end. You can say they're setting him up and need to open his daughter to future shows, but the way you end a character's story says something about what you think about that character. What does it say when the eugenicist war criminal gets the happy ending he doesn't deserve?
