Dolly Parton - Jolene 1973
Dolly Parton is an American singer-songwriter, actress, and philanthropist. With a career spanning over fifty years, Parton has been described as a country legend and has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time. She has had 25 singles reach no. 1 on the Billboard country music charts, a record for a female artist (tied with Reba McEntire). She has 44 career Top 10 country albums, a record for any artist, and she has 110 career-charted singles over the past 40 years. She has composed over 3,000 songs. She has founded a number of charitable and philanthropic organizations, chief among them is the Dollywood Foundation, which manages a number of projects to bring education and poverty relief to East Tennessee where she grew up. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Parton donated $1 million towards research at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, which funded the critical early stages of development of the Moderna vaccine.
"Jolene" was released on October 15, 1973, as the first single and title track from her the thirteenth solo studio album Jolene, and became Parton's second solo number one single on the country charts. "Jolene" became Parton's first top ten hit song in the UK, reaching number seven in the UK Singles Chart in 1976. It also re-entered the chart when Parton performed at the Glastonbury festival in 2014.
According to Parton, the song was inspired by a red-headed bank clerk who flirted with her husband, Carl Dean, at his local bank branch around the time they were newly married. In an interview, she also revealed that Jolene's name and appearance are based on that of a young fan who came on stage for her autograph.
During an interview on The Bobby Bones Show in 2018, Parton revealed that she wrote "Jolene" on the same day that she wrote "I Will Always Love You".
"Jolene" was nominated for the Grammy Awards for Best Female Country Vocal Performance twice, in 1975 and 1976. The first nomination was for the original recording, and the second was for a live recording from the TV series In Concert. It did not win either time, but in 2017, a cover by the a cappella group Pentatonix which featured Parton as a guest singer won the Grammy Award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.
In 2023 she released her forty-ninth solo studio album, Rockstar, a collaborative project with a variety of rock musicians and where "Jolene" is sung by Italian rockband MƄneskin, listen to it here!

Of My 50+ Favorite BLs these are the 10 I rewatch the most
So you could call these my favorite comfort foods. Everything on this list got a rating of 10/10 or 9/10 from me.
10 Most Comforting BLs
(for me, in order of most recently rewatched at the top)
Our Dating Sim
Korea 2023 Viki (watch the series not the movie)
This is a perfect short form KBL, an office set reunion romance featuring geeks that really suits 8 eps with no fluff and no chaff. Just comforting and yummy. I adored every aspect from the casting to the pristinely simple premise to the quietly smooth execution. Sure itās low stakes, but that makes it high domesticity and extremely warm and gentle. This is a fuzzy blanket of a story - a cozy BL. It lives in my rewatch pile and you know whatās best about it? Every single episode is in that pile. Thereās no skipping with this one, it might be good natured and calmly sweet but itās tight and the pacing is excellent.

Cosmetic Playlover
Japan 2024 Gaga
The most recent release on this list, it came out this year and I've already rewatched it 5x. I love this little show. It's a classic office BL about the older workaholic who loves his job and the younger upstart who unexpectedlyĀ loves his boss. Itās a hyung romance where everybody is extremely earnest and sweet and pretty about everything. Except our seme, who is slightly unhinged and a little obsessed in all the ways one likes best from Japan (if one is me).Ā Plus the kisses are good! Utterly charming unexpected gem of a show. What fun!
Jun and Jun
Korea 2023 Viki
A delightful office romance about an ex-idol who joins cubical life only to find his new boss is his first love. Other boys are sniffing around too. Operative word being "sniffing" as much of this romance involves smell. With a snappy (sometimes even raunchy) script, enjoyable sides, a pretty as peaches cast, and decent chemistry this show made up for in style what it lacked in substance. I like fluff. I loved this. I smiled every moment I was watching. My only caution is this is for fans of the BL genre only, I donāt think itāll work for anyone else.
My Personal Weatherman
AKA Taikan Yoho
Japan 2023 Gaga
This style of live action yaoi really only works from Japan. Basically: boys who fell in love in college end up living together but are so repressed they don't realize they're in love. It's higher heat than we usually get from Japan's HEA stuff, and that aspect is also very well done, but it leaned into the "why don't they just talk for fuck's sake?" trope which is only exacerbated into undiluted frustration by the fact that they're already fucking. It's great, but watching requires more patience than usual, even for Japan. That said it's also bruisingly romantic. Emphasis on bruise.
Unintentional Love Story
Korea 2023 iQIYI
OMG the plot! Uke forced into a totally understandable betrayal, falling in love despite himself, put into a corner he can't get out of, the AGONY, the PAIN in those gorgeous eyes. Gah. Okay, so: A boy loses his job due to trumped-up corruption charges accidentally discovers his ex-boss's favorite artist, now a recluse. Evil manager offers him his job back, if he can convince the artist to rejoin society. Instead, they fall in love. I found the artist a bit stiff and reserved but Gongchan (maknae of B1A4) is a fucking GIFT - he carried this show (which I do not expect from the idol element). He was luminous with extraordinarily expressive eyes, just drown in the emoting abyss. The external conflict, social tension and pressure is complex and beautifully executed, plus Korea gave us legit side dishes (NOT a love triangle, hally-fucking-luya). All that said, when I rewatch this it's usually just the second half, but WHAT a ride.
Semantic Error
Korea 2022 Viki
Sexy older boy discovers pouty younger boy has outed him as a slacker, starts out bullying him, accidentally falls madly in love instead. Korea hits it entirely out of the Parks by doing a university BL with everything we expect from BL just done exactly right. Korea's signature quality executed perfectly with added bonus good story, great pacing, stunning visuals, and fantastic chemistry. You cannot ask for more from a BL, let alone a KBL. Another one where the rewatch is mostly just the second half.
Old Fashion Cupcake
Japan 2022
This show had me from the moment they broke the egg yolk with the chopsticks in the opening credits. Itās about a younger man with a long cherished crush on his boss (ten years older and going through a mid life crisis) who decides to save and seduce said boss with pancakes. Itās wholesome, comforting, sexy, and a very necessary narrative about still having hope, interests, and openness to affection at any age. Itās a stunningly filmed late-in-life comg of age/queerness story packaged in a subtle critique of expectations around masculinity, love, and loneliness⦠and itās beautiful.
Yes yes. But the bit you know you want to rewatch is that long shot with the bite kiss. YOU KNOW you wanna.
Seven Days
Japan 2015
Ha! I faked you out 'cause this wasn't at the top but of course it's on the list! One of the best live action yaois ever made, with perfectly structured angst, fantastic characters and acting, and no problematic tropes (rare in Japanese BL). Older boy dares the hot af younger one to date him for a week. Turns out they both like it... A lot. The leads have excellent chemistry although itās low heat thereās still some really cute mutual kisses.
Takara & Amagi
Japan 2022
I gnawed on my knuckles and squealed a lot with this show, but a rewatch is way less tense. Reserved cool kid must learn to communicate to keep the tiny disaster nugget heās madly in love with. It is beyond charming: soft and gentle, packed with cuteness and high school angst, thirst, & yearning.
We Best Love
Taiwan 2021 WeTV
WBL successfully managed to pick up and combine the best features of Korean, Thai, and Japanese BL as it exists right now. Couple that to the insane chemistry from the leads, and we have one of the greatest BLs of all time, cooking to a recipe I doubt anyone else will ever be able to replicate since only Taiwan is this flexible. It's basically every classic BL trope bombarded at us in two parts, rapid fire, one after another. Rewatching this show reminds me of everything I love about this genre. It is the genre in pure concentrated form.
The End!
I think it's no accident that none of these are Thai, part of a rewatch for me is the brevity of the show, longer stuff does get rewatched, but not as frequently.

Secret Day Jobs
All the Robins and Batfam extended universe (aka, until I get bored) have started doing day jobs as they get older, but they are all worried Bruce will bench them if they find out they're burning the candle at both ends, so they keep it secret.
We all know Dick is a cop in some comics, but I would like to propose they all go into teaching in some way. They don't tell the others, and gradually all end up transferring to the same school. We're also assuming they are all adults here.
We have:
Jason Todd - English Lit Professor. Doesn't like dealing with college kids, so moves to high school literature. Sometimes covers drama lessons if it's Shakespeare plays.
Dick Grayson - Health and Wellbeing (don't know if this is just a UK thing, sometimes called PSE). Basically teaches kids the dangers of smoking and how to stay healthy mentally and physically. He also runs the schools gymnastics club and helps at some other sports clubs.
Tim Drake - Computing. One of those teachers that doesn't care if you swear or call him the proper title. Does not care if you are misusing the school computers. He figured out the others are all teachers and hacked himself onto the payroll cause he thought it would be funny. Hacking emails to change names to see how long he can keep the others from figuring out they all work in the same place.
Damian Wayne - Biology. He kind of wishes he went into chemistry, because he despises the giggles and childish behaviour whenever something mentioned in the course is even mildly sexual. Refuses to do the frog dissection and nearly gets into a physical fight with the head of department. This event is what clues Dick into his presence, "Did you hear the new biology teacher threatened to kill Mr Smith over something? Apparently had a Katana or something in his desk".
Cassandra Cain - Guidance Councilor. Very good at interpreting the body language of the kids. Also does some work with ASL interpretation when needed. Thought everyone was aware of each other and isn't really trying to hide. Tim still has no idea she's here. Dick gets jumpscared when Cass shows up to one of the after school clubs he helps at.
Stephanie Brown - Somehow in a different position everyday. She appears as a janitor one day, then she's doing the school bus run the next. On Fridays she works in the Canteen cause the food is good on Fridays. There explicitly to annoy Tim who knows she's there, but can't find her in the payroll.
Duke Thomas - Politics/Modern Studies. The sort of teacher to say he's putting on a documentary, then pauses every 30 secs to go on a tangent about something. Disagrees with half the shit in the curriculum, so does his own thing. The projector in his classroom hasn't worked for months, but no one needs to know that.
Also, the moment they all figured out they are all there.
Dick hears about the frog incident and very quickly catches on.
Duke goes to the office to pick up jotters and Stephanie is working there.
Jason used the guidance councilor's room to take a minute and chill. Cass was on top of a cupboard for 10 mins before revealing herself.
Dick goes to grab the first aid kit after a kid falls at gymnastics and Stephanie is the Custodian in today.
Damian needs some supplies and the lab tech is Stephanie.
An Arkham breakout happens during a parents night and all of them run to change into costume. Issue is they all hid their costumes in the janitors closet.
WE runs a scholarship fund for students and Bruce has to show up to the awards ceremony for successful students. He gets a tour of the school only to slowly run into all of his kids. To start with, the tour is run by Stephanie who is refusing to break character.
Stephanie: Thank you for coming Mr Wayne
Bruce: Stephanie wha-
Stephanie: Please, Miss Brown, Stephanie was my father.
Steph: Anyway, here is our lovely new labs that WE do graciously funded.
Damian: *Yelling at a child to follow safety procedures*
Bruce: What? Dames?
Stephanie: and down to the left is our English department.
Jason Todd: *Animatedly discussing the influences of Romeo and Juliet in modern culture*
Steph: This is our lit teacher Mr Todd Peters
Bruce: *makes a note to remind his kids on good undercover names*
Well I'm tired but will probably add to this at some point.

Iām going to Japan in October! Weāre doing Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, do you have any must-sees or any recommendations for a first time visitor? I hope you had a fab time, your photos looked amazing!!
Iāve only been to Tokyo of those so far but I think good universal advice for Japan is to IMMEDIATELY get a cute cheap touristy shoulder tote that looks easy to wash and feels like it can hold 20lbs because you WILL be at a loss for trash cans and you WILL need to carry your trash around until you find one and it WILL be awhile.
Your first stop should be a shrine and your first action after the entry rituals should be pulling a fortune. let good fortune (or protection from misfortune) color your trip with optimism and gratitude.
Hit up PopMart in Harajuku, not to go in, but to witness the line of people waiting to get in like a circus sideshow. Then walk past the door and down the block to Shutters and have some yummy food in a pleasant quiet atmosphere. Or go a bit further down the street to find a Turkish Kebab stand (halal so stop at a konbini and byob). 9pm is the best atmosphere imo.
In Akihabara I recommend Cure Maid Cafe, itās easy to find because itās right next door to the five floor sex shop Merci which is visible straight out the station. Itās a normal cafe with some cutesy drinks and the waitstaff wear oldtimey maid uniforms. Itās very relaxing and calming.
VISIT A DENNYS AT SOME POINT oh my god itās so much better than American Dennyās it sincerely feels like better quality food even tho I know itās likely just the good service and strict cleanliness. We accidentally sat in a smoking section and didnāt realize because we were alone and the area was so fucking clean there was no residue or smell. One thing tho is that they abide by timed menus. No lunch menu at 9am, and only some of the featured breakfast items are all day.
Try all sorts of foods! Itās so damn affordable itās insane and I never felt tired or bloated after a meal, only energized and satisfied.
Donāt eat McDonaldās or Starbucks or whatever you can usually get at home, it tastes the same, sometimes the special exclusive items are ass, and the only reason itās better is the level of service.
If youāre going to Skytree, the Tembo ticket is fine, donāt bother springing for the top floor unless you have kids with you, itās a Toy Story collab thing until 10/31 and itās pretty boring and thereās never any available seating, ppl literally unconscious on those chairs lmfao. thereās a cute photo spot where you can get a free photo then pay for a frame, but thatās about it. The alcohol in the cafe is watered down but the food was great for the price. And the character goods store has so much random shit, I literally got teletubbies merch??
Donāt bother with the Yaoi Dungeon (that one K-Books on Otome Road) unless you keep up with the modern yaoi meta because that place was so confusing. I felt like an old man yelling at clouds. Where are my horrifying early 00s semes and ukes. Who are these cultivation twinks. If you do itabag stuff I think it would be heaven tho.

"Adjusted for inflation, my starting salary of £12,000 was less than the £36,000 a first-year resident doctor now earns, but that conceals important differences. The hospitals where I did my early placements were obliged to provide me with free accommodation on site. These days resident doctors must rent privately, and with even rooms in shared houses costing £600-£1,000 depending on location, this represents a significant pull on income.
I was able to get a mortgage on a two-bed Victorian terrace in Oxford during my second year as a resident. With house-price growth far outstripping general inflation over the past three decades, home ownership is unattainable for many young doctors today.
... Additionally, I finished my five years at university with nothing more than the modest overdraft my friendly NatWest bank manager had granted me. A medical graduate today begins their career around £100,000 in student debt, a figure that will rise even as they begin paying it off out of their salary, thanks to exorbitant interest rates."
I'm no longer a junior/resident doctor, but I still very much support the campaign - but I agree with this summary that the working conditions of UK medicine have changed significantly, and that living standards have changed considerably as a result.
Not only that, but medicine is no longer the job for life it once was. People imagine a life of stability, however as the article states:
"When I qualified, jobs were well matched to the numbers of new graduates, and one rarely had to move to a different part of the country unless by choice. Residents today enter a lottery system in which they can be randomly posted hundreds of miles away from friends and family. There are often too few jobs available, so an unlucky minority are held in suspended animation, often waiting till just a fortnight before their start date to learn if something has been cobbled together somewhere in the country to enable them to commence their career.
Once past the two-year foundation programme, further jeopardy awaits. Numbers of specialty training programmes have failed to keep pace, so competition has become intense. For some branches of practice, fewer than one in six applicants will secure a training place... Medical unemployment simply didnāt exist during most of my career, but over the past few years it has become a grim reality. In general practice it is now endemic, the funding squeeze of the past 15 years leaving many surgeries unable to afford to recruit new doctors, even as patientsā top priority for the NHS has become the ability to access care from a GP."
This is a sad reality that is fuelling much of the discontent. Not only are doctors perfectly able to see how their profession has been increasingly denigrated and devalued by politicians and the media, both literally as we're repeatedly told we should be happy with effectively being paid less than they were 10 years ago (when nothing in life costs less!), facing increasing uncertainty over where and if they will find jobs, as the hyper-rotational system struggles to be fit for purpose.
This hyper rotational training process makes it difficult to become part of a community, to make friends and find partners, makes it difficult to put down roots and get to know our teams, as we are shuffled from place to place every few months. And it leaves staff open to abuse and neglect as the constant rotating makes it difficult to address concerns about the quality of training or the behaviour of other staff.
There are so many problems to address.

I donāt usually make Tumblr posts but I have the wildest theory for the most recent Doctor Who episodes.
I think The Rani was meant to be the Master but somewhere between Season 1 and Season 2 it got changed.
And I have a lot to say about it.
Season 1 hints
Season 1 of the New Who was filled with reference to The Master. Off the top of my head, Maestro playing his theme; attacking with drums; calling the one from 72 yards the worst prime minister the UK's ever had, the Skye Boat song and the Missy quote from Boom.
RTD has a history of doing this, in 10ās second season he hinted at Saxon so many times, plastering his poster everywhere and various calls to the prime minister or Mr. Saxon.
However the second season has had not a single reference to them, not even in passing, almost like They're intentionally avoiding anything that could be constituted as a Master reference.
Mischaracterisation
The Rani hates Galifrey. From Old Who, she has hated them since she got exiled for her experiments. And what's another thing, she isnāt running a single experiment and she isnāt regarding The Doctor with contempt as she usually does. Sheās treating him like Missy does in fact, flirting with him, dancing with him. āWe were lovers, we used to dance.ā
The Master is the flirt with The Doctor type. From Missy kissing him, to the Spy master calling her dear. Even The Saxon Master was flirting with him. And don'ts get me started on the older Masters, from Delgado calling him āMy Dear Doctorā repeatedly.
Disguise
Disguising herself in order to follow The Doctor around the universe is pulled straight from The Masterās book. From Mr Saxon, to O, to Missy pretending to be a robot, the disguises are a classic Master plot. The Rani has disguised herself once in her history for information from The Doctor.
The plot
The plot of releasing Omega to create a new Gallifrey is a very Master plan. The Rani has expressed her hate for Time Lords every since she was expelled from Galifrey for her experiments. She is a scientist that wants to run her experiments.
Where's a quote that says āUnlike the power-hungry villain archetype of the Master, the Rani was a ruthless evil scientist who wasnāt interested in ruling the universe as much as she wanted to understand it, no matter the cost.ā I donāt see how any of this Omega plot is in understanding the universe.
Where's a quote that says āUnlike the power-hungry villain archetype of the Master, the Rani was a ruthless evil scientist who wasnāt interested in ruling the universe as much as she wanted to understand it, no matter the cost.ā I donāt see how any of this is in understanding the universe.
On the other hand The Master continuously returns to it to try and rule it. Also taking over the entire Earth and hypnotising the entire population is also a very Master plot compared to the Rani. He literally hypnotised most of the UK as Mr Saxon whereas thereās no hypnotised in the Randi's past.
RTD and other erasures
Everyone talks about Robot Revolution being the poor manās cyberman plot. But with this realisation, I believe it was meant to be a cyberman episode that was changed for some reason. It has the same hallmarks of a cyberman episode, with the resistance, with turning a human into part robot.
RTD recently quoted The Master āPeoples of the universe: Please attend carefully.ā. And he was the first writer to bring the Master back in the newer seasons with the Saxon Master. I think he was going for another return and had to change it but kept the whole storyline the same and just replaced the Master with the Rani.
I don't know why this has happened, whether it was some other influence or not. But it doesnāt matter. This storyline was written for The Master and they were replaced by the Rani.
Now where does this leave us? In a dire place. I don't hate the Rani returning or any older villains returning and I don't hate the New Who. But what we have here is a plot written for one villain that was given to another. That has now introduced this old villain with the characterisation of another. This is the new generation of Who, some peopleās first iteration of the show. And they are messing up long established characters for some reason. I don't know about anyone else but I don't feel good about this.
If you have anymore to add to this theory, tell me more.
(And thank you to my partner Vic who had to listen to all of this conspiracy theory through voice memos of me rambling)

Hellooo great Welsh overlord of tumblr - I am wondering if you know where I could find some student thoughts on Aberystwyth Uni? I'm thinking about doing my MA in History there but being from Aus I'm not quite sure how you sus out the ~vibes~
(I know it's not your uni but any help is much appreciated! diolch!!)
In the UK we have the NSS - the National Student Survey. I can't remember offhand if the course specific details are publicly available (I think they are? But you'd have to trawl a spreadsheet. Try here) but I do know Aber scores pretty highly in most categories as a university. They've been top in Wales for student satisfaction for the last nine years, anyway and in some categories are in the UK top 5 and 10.
Plus, I can personally tell you it's a great town to be a student in
You could also have a look and see if there's a Reddit forum for this sort of thing? I don't use it myself, but that's the best place to find honest reviews these days
