Inclusive Future Magazine: Visions from a Gender-Inclusive Future is an anthology of speculative prose and art in the guise of a pop-culture magazine from the future. All of the creators involved are trans, nonbinary, and/or genderqueer, and it provides a collective vision for a gender-inclusive future by answering the question: What might gender look like fifty years from now?

We're open for preorders via Kickstarter right now! This Kickstarter is our sole method of taking orders for both the print ($12) and ebook ($5) versions of the zine, so if you want a copy, you have until June 21 to order one.

Sent off the manuscript of my debut queer thriller to the editor. This will be the first in a trilogy with queer, trans woman profiler Mary Dubois. The story is based in regional Quebec and is one of the first, if not the first Canadian thriller written by a trans woman about a trans woman, including other queer women and men. http://www.joellecirce.ca

The last workshop of the winter season for @flux_twc the theme today was “femme”, probably the one I was most looking forward to! As a trans masc person, who does have fluidity in gender expression, but feels like they need to go towards masc to be “seen” by others as masc… I appreciate the expiration of femininity. I don’t want to push it away or dismiss it, because I still enjoy it for myself. And I love the heck out of femmes 💚💗. Meet Delta!

Delta is the main character of my novel. He is a scrawny young man who wakes up in the 24th century with no memories besides a lot of trivia about the United States. Unfortunately for him, the U.S. was broken apart about 200 years prior in the aftermath of World War Four-and-a-Half. Now he needs to figure out what he is, why there's a strange core in his chest that allows him to control nanobots, and most importantly, how to fit in.

My latest obsession is the 2017 side-scrolling, platforming game Celeste, about a troubled young woman who climbs a mountain. In doing so, she challenges herself to achieve what she thinks maybe impossible and confronts her inner demons along the way. The metaphor of climbing a mountain is enticing, read several ways throughout the game’s plot as overcoming adversity, grappling with anxiety, confronting depression, recovering from addiction, and (for me the most compelling narrative) coming to terms with one’s gender identity.

But I didn’t download the game Celeste on the Switch because the main character was canonicly trans, although this was a cool fact to learn later on. I began to play the game because I wanted a challenge.

As Madeleine ascends the mountain, she meets a version of herself in a mirror, a dark reflection that chases, mocks, and attacks her. This is part of her, a shadow self that is not unfamiliar to those who’ve played games like Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time or Sonic the Hedgehog. This is not just an inversion of you, but a reflection of what you might become if you give in to your pessimism and doubt.

But what might be initially challenging, what might seem insurmountable, can also be an absolute delight. This is what I wish someone had told me about being trans. Of course, it is difficult to live in a society that often vilifies trans people, but it also joy to be yourself.

This is also what I wish someone had told me about writing a book. The difficulty is the point. Just because the task is hard doesn’t mean it cannot also be fun.

The same might be true of beginning an art career or coding a video game. So much of what gives life meaning balances on the fulcrum of challenge and contentment. I did not write this weekend because writing is no longer a pleasure, only work.

The dark version of Celeste, a purple-goth sprite lovers of the game have nicknamed Badeleine, tries to convince you to not climb the mountain. After all, this task is too difficult. This is not meant for you. Why would you persist in struggling?

There are levels of Celeste on which I died fifty, one hundred, five hundred times. When I cleared those levels, I felt immense pride. I didn’t think about the hundreds of ways I had fallen into a spike trap or plummeted off the side of an 8-bit mountain. What I knew, what I know too of writing a book, is that even the words you struggle to write, even the pages you barely finish, even the mountain whose pinnacle you reach bone-tired, is a source of joy.

The difficulty is the point.

We must allow ourselves to attempt the seemingly insurmountable. Even if failure seems inevitable, the joy is in the attempt. In the treacherous climb, we push ourselves. We prove to ourselves the beautiful, human things of which we’re capable.

As I type this, there are over 380 anti-trans bills being proposed in the United States. Republicans in office have begun using genocidal language to talk about eliminating trans folks. I am a part of the #bookstagram and #booktok communities, and I want to see us DO SOMETHING about it. Several influential tiktok accounts have banded together to create various events throughout late March to help raise money and awareness for trans rights. I want to do my part in my own way to do the same. @mercurystardusttopz and @alluringskull have banded together to do a 30hr livestream on March 31st, which is #transdayofvisibility with the goal of raising $1M for @pointofprideorg Several book-related accounts (including my own) on #tiktok and #Instagram are planning to do a #readathon of books by #transauthors I'm writing this to ask you to sponsor me or another reader you know who will be participating and pledge to donate a certain amount of money for every book I read by trans (as in transgender/agender/genderqueer/non-binary/…) authors, and I will match those donations up to $100 (or more if I can get my finances to cooperate).
