the Nerima Wrecker Crews' Guide to Ranma Fandom for Newcomers
With the release this month of a brand new anime adaptation of the eighties manga Ranma ½, a lot of new fans are joining an older fandom that may leave them...confused about some details.
See, when the Ranma manga began in 1987, series creator Rumiko Takahashi was already solidly-established from her success with the runaway hit Urusei Yatsura. It only took two years for an anime adaptation to begin airing....for a mere eighteen episodes, before being canceled. If you go back to the '89 anime, you will almost certainly notice some drastic shifts in art style and tone from the first eighteen episodes to the remainder, and that's because only a single season was produced by Studio DEEN before production shifted to a new directorial crew, who dubbed the following season Ranma ½ Nettōhen (Fierce/Hot Battle Chapter).
The thing is, between the original eighteen episodes being made while the manga was still relatively early in its nine-year run, attempts to draw in better ratings by heavily promoting fan-favorite characters, a need for filler episodes to let the manga catch up to the pace of the anime's releases, and even the biases and friendships of the respective directors and writers...some things wound up being different.
And as a result, the Ranma ½ of the Eighties and Nineties is very different from what we're going to get with the 2024 anime. The 2024 series is based on a manga that had been finished for decades, and between the official releases so far and some unfortunate early leaks, it shows plenty of signs of being far more faithful to the original manga.
So, we of the Nerima Wreckers' Crew are here to introduce you to a few of the things you might run into as a new Ranma ½ fan exploring the existing fan content that has accrued over the past few decades!
Be aware: you're about to read spoilers for a four decades old manga. Questions about something that we don't cover in this post? Leave a comment asking for more, after the jump!
Something to get out of the way first: we're the NWC as an in-joke: as both Transformers and Ranma fans (and in some cases, fictive introjects), we wanted to combine the 'Wreckers' group name from Transformers with the English-language Ranma ½ fandom's nickname for the group of martial artists, students, teachers, monsters, and other characters who populate the series:
The Nerima Wrecking Crew.
Tumblr media
The principal setting of Ranma ½ is Nerima, a ward of the metropolis of Tokyo. There are 23 special wards, and Nerima is a real-life one that is found in the northwest of Tokyo—in fact, it was the 23rd and final ward! In English-language communications, the local government identifies the ward as Nerima City, so that's how we'll speak of it here.
Nerima is a large city that still retains a very suburban, even exurban character stretching back to its history of farming. There are even still farms within the city limits, including at least one dairy farm last we checked! It's part of Tokyo, but it has a kid of old-fashioned peaceful character...that makes it the perfect place for anime characters to disrupt. That kind of disruption led the English-speaking fandom to dub our favorite crew of violent martial artists the "Wrecking Crew", presumably after their propensity to bust down walls and buildings.
A lot of anime and manga take place in Nerima. Takahashi's previous hit series Urusei Yatsura, the cat-robot classic All-Purpose Cultural Cat-Girl Nuku-Nuku, the anime adaptation of Stop!! Hibari-Kun, even Tokyo Ghoul...okay, some of these are not quite the same genre as the others.
Tumblr media
This is often attributed to the large number of anime studios based in the city, but Ranma's adventures in Nerima have a special bond with the environment that seems to go beyond, stretching back to the original manga. Ranma is often seen walking along (or falling from) fencetops above canals just like the above image from Wikimedia, and scenes set in nearby parks map fairly well to specific ones in Nerima City, so we can generally assume that the neighborhood where the Tendō Dojo is found is roughly in the Ōizumi area along the Shirako River seen above.
More specifically, it's in an imaginary neighborhood somewhere nebulously within those boundaries, a neighborhood that parts of the older fandom know as Furinkan-chō, AKA "Furinkan Town", after the Furinkan High School that Ranma and Akane attend—drawing a connection to the more official identification of the cast of Urusei Yatsura as living in Tomobiki-chō and attending Tomobiki High School.
Tumblr media
A sober, dignified edifice to education...populated by a bunch of martial arts lunatics.
Some of whom are probably going to be pretty different in the new anime!
Tumblr media
Meet the principal of Furinkan High School. Yes, this is a native Japanese man. Yes, he has problems.
Principal, Headmaster, or in Japanese Kunō-kōchō (no given name provided) is, unfortunately, the unfortunate father of the equally unfortunate series mainstay Tatewaki Kunō. The Principal here visited the USA for a while in order to learn from our education methods and came back an even worse problem than he'd left, becoming obsessed with the trappings of Hawai'ian tourism and the English language. In the original Japanese, his dialogue is heavily peppered with random English words and phrases (and an obnoxious Woody Woodpecker-style laugh).
The thing is, it's hard to translate a character randomly speaking English...into English. So, the official English translations of the original manga and anime had the Principal badly pepper his speech with Hawai'ian Pidgin phrases. It's going to be a little while before he shows up in the new anime, so it's hard to say for sure how he'll be translated...but it probably won't be that. So, new fans: you're probably going to encounter a few fanworks where there's a random fake-Hawai'ian man threatening teenagers with bad haircuts.
Teenagers like Hikaru Gosunkugi.
Tumblr media
This is Gosunkugi. You'll probably see him next season, because we're going to perform acts of supervillainy if they don't make a second season. He shows up pretty early on in the manga, and has an important role to play in a major storyline...but he didn't show up in the original anime for 94 episodes after he was supposed to appear.
Tumblr media
What we got instead was Sasuke Sarugakure. There's some debate about exactly why the anime-only character Sasuke was added: a diminutive ninja with thick eyebrows, prominent whiskers, buck teeth, and a miserable lot in life as the Kunō family servant. Seemingly...the only servant. Sasuke's role in the original anime seemed to have been not only to fill in for Gosunkugi in an early storyline, but to act as a comedic foil to the overblown antics of the Kunō family—especially absurd since the anime took the already comical wealth of the Kunōs from the manga, and exaggerated it to an absurd degree that seems all the more ridiculous when you learn that Sasuke sleeps in the crawlspace and gets by on fewer than three meals a day.
Oddly, this characterization as a comically impoverished ninja is a recurring bit in Takahashi's stories: Urusei Yatsura featured the job-hunting missing-nin Kaede, and the last few volumes of the Ranma ½ manga introduced the threadbare kunoichi Konatsu.
Tumblr media
Get used to this image. It's probably all you're going to see of Konatsu for a good few seasons...because the original anime never got to that part of the manga.
Konatsu is a thorny topic in the fandom due to matters of gender that aren't helped by the original anime never getting to those stories, and the original manga chapters taking forever to be available in English. What can definitely be said is that Konatsu A: identifies as a kunoichi, specifically a title for female ninja, and B: is AMAB.
But this is a series that's all about playing with gender.
For example...
Tumblr media
The Girl. An anime-only episode of Nettōhen presented a story of Ranma taking a blow to the head, waking up not long after and insisting on actually being a girl—identifying her life as a boy as being something akin to a bad dream. This version of Ranma knows she was assigned male and turns back into a male body when splashed with hot water, but she demonstrates a visceral dysphoria about it that is painfully relatable. The episode's plot is concluded and the status quo is restored when the pacifistic girl is struck once more in the head at the end, restoring the Ranma who is a confident martial artist and self-identified man among men...but an increasing number of highly-rated fanworks reference this single-episode anime-only story.
This isn't the only time an anime-only episode touches on the idea of Ranma who is solely identified as a girl:
Tumblr media
Ranma and the Evil Within starts off with Ranma joking about staying a girl forever, only for it to be taken seriously by the recurring problematic antagonist Happōsai (seriously, he's just the worst, and for some reason the original anime production team decided to make lots of anime-only episodes featuring him). A magic incense is brought into play, splitting off all the femnine 'yin' from Ranma's masculine 'yang'.
Tumblr media
This split-off half is characterized as unbalanced, magically powerful, and a threat to Ranma's life. So of course, she looks sick as fuck. But just like The Girl, she's a one-off character. Don't worry: if the anime runs long enough to cover all the manga storylines, we'll still get a story about a female-only duplicate of Ranma. But it's going to be a little while.
Speaking of girls in Ranma ½, let's touch on Akane's female friends!
Tumblr media
Mostly going unnamed in the manga, Akane has several female classmates and friends who received more prominent roles in the old anime.
Tumblr media
(gif by @roseillith)
The two most notable of these are Yuka (lighter brown hair), and Sayuri (darker brown, often in a ponytail). These names do get called out in the old version of the anime, though they don't seem to have much personality beyond "girls who are friends with each other and Akane".
Tumblr media
This role is sometimes filled by others in the old anime. It's much harder to find episodes where any other girls in the class are named, but due to two of them recurring, fanworks often bring them up as Akane's other friends:
Tumblr media
Meet Asami (wavy shoulder-length hair) and Hiroko (short hair and freckles)...or is that Makoto and Shikako? Sources vary on these names, and English language websites disagree on which are the 'official' names. If anyone can track down an episode where either one is named on-screen, we'd appreciate it!
Akane isn't the only one with school friends: Ranma's got a few recurring acquaintances among the male students, as well.
Tumblr media
In the old anime, these two are specifically named as Hiroshi (lighter colored hair and wider eyes) and Daisuke (dark hair and narrow eyes). They're often treated by both the source material and fanworks as Ranma's sole "normal" guy friends, and in general behave like stereotypical high school boys...including openly lusting after Ranma's girl form, even after they learn that she and the male Ranma are one and the same.
Tumblr media
Hiroshi and Daisuke show up more consistently as a pair than Akane's friends in both the manga and the original anime, and fanworks often pair them romantically with Yuka and Sayuri. But even with how common Hiroshi, Daisuke, Yuka, and Sayuri are (down to their incredibly average names), they deserve mentioning for new fans...
Tumblr media
...Because the new anime renamed them all! "Hiroshi" is now "Shingo" (しんご), "Daisuke" is now "Kiichi" (きいち), "Yuka" is now "Noriko" (のりこ), and "Sayuri" is now "Tomoyo" (ともよ).
That's it for now, because there's a brand new episode out that we haven't had a chance to watch while we wrap up this post on our lunch break. Until next time, this is the Nerima Wrecker Crew, signing off!

🌲We went from knowing about 5 to 150 alters in the span of a few years and i know there a still more i just don't know about yet. 🌻 "Im the fluff. Be afraid!" This quote is from one of our syskids being silly with our PS. Its great to see how save our syskids can feel here. 🌙 Some of our newest fictives are really close, some of them are in a relationship and one teenager was adopted by two others. 🌊 We have what we call the "Billie-Eilish-clause", because of the song "my strange addiction" which includes the line "Dont ask questions you dont wanna know, learnt my lesson way to long ago." We use this to kind of joke about the situation, when we question something and another alter will just tell us to stop asking. These moments can be really scary and joking about it makes it easier.
🌺 There is this beautiful garden with pillars that look like they are part of an ancient ruin. We have important meetings there.
🌍 Some of us can change the innerworld but at least while fronting we cant remember a lot about it and cant access it freely. The things we do know, we know because someone got a glimpse of it from the front or because another alter told us.
🐛Nathan! He stared out as a persecutor and went through a lot of change and became a much more healthy and protective part of our system.
🍂 Not as far as I know, but I learned that that doesn't have to mean anything.
☀️We are still working on our internal communication, but without a lot of blackouts and greyouts we never really started with most of the external communication techniques we see other systems use.
🌱Relatively open, most of our friends know and we tell most people close to us at some point.
🌄Yes, absolutely! It took years for us to finally get over the faking thoughts and denial. We still sometimes have these thoughts, but we learnt how to handle them.
🍁 Some just know their name. Some need some time to figure it out and many look through name-websites until they find one they like. 🌈 Yes, a lot actually. Some are introjects and some not. When it comes to the introjects we have mages, wizards, witcher (from the show "the witcher", so mutants technically), a Pokemon, vampires and a werewolf. Our non-intrjoject non humans are more vampires, a dragon-shapeshifter, a shapeshifter that can transform into different animals, a wolf, a cat, a part of our innerworld, a storm, a water elemental, someone made out of darkness, two robots, a demon, several Nagas and more. Im sure Im forgetting some and one I just cant explain.
🦔 Yes, definitely. Some we miss and I kinda miss being the person I was before I split a few months ago.
👥 Mostly our PS and some of our system friends. We sadly have bad experience with our Singlet (ex-)Friends about being open as ourselves.
🦚 I would say we are relatively overt, but it depends on the context. In some situations we automatically mask or the host gets frontstuck because of the need to mask and we cant really stop that, even if it's theoretically save.
DID / OSDD ask game
🌲 How has your numbers of parts changed over time?
🌻 Favorite quote from a part.
🌾 Any songs you relate to DID / OSDD?
🌙 Share a special relationship between parts.
🌊 Any inside jokes in your system?
🌺 Describe one part of your inner world.
🌍 Can you change your inner world and access it freely?
🐛 Which part made a lot of progress?
🍂 Did a fusion happen in your system?
☀️ How do you all prefer to communicate?
🌱 How open are you about your DID / OSDD?
🌄 Did you ever went through phases of denial?
🗻 How much does your inner world feel like home?
🍁 How do your parts get their names?
🌈 Are there any parts who view themselves as something other than human? Or who have supernatural powers?
🦔 Are there any parts of you that you miss?
👥 Is there a person you all can be yourselves around?
🦚 Ho covered / overt is your DID / OSDD?
❔ (ask any other question)

words: 11k
“It’s, uh, not exactly a hello, but… we try and mimic each other’s heartbeats,” Vash says. “It’s kind of like we’re saying, ‘I’m here for you.’ Because the closer together we are, the easier it is to actually merge thoughts and stuff. I don’t know if I’d really be able to feel it if you tried. It’d feel different from a human, anyway. Plants always have a hard time keeping our minds apart. If you’re not careful, you might start breathing a bit too close and suddenly, you’ll have a sibling crowding you out of your own mind.” “Are you talking,” you say carefully. “About Knives?” Vash lets out a long sigh. “Sometimes I don’t think we were meant to be different people,” he says. “I think there’s more I could have done to help him if we lived in the same skin."
a fic about vash's birthday, and livio having an introject of wolfwood, because it's my birthday & why not

Alterhuman is a term that refers to someone who does not fit the traditional standard of what is considered human, and/or does not identify as human. This can include non-human system members and introjects, however it also includes singlets who don't quite fit the term human, or identify as non-human to an extent.
Otherkin refers to someone who identifies partially or wholly as something non-human, usually involuntarily.
Mythkin: identifying as something found in mythology, such as a unicorn, merperson, dragon, etc.
Divinekin: identifying as something with divine origin, such as an angel, demon, or other deity.
Faekin: identifying as any type of fae, such as fairies or elves.
Alienkin: identifying as an alien, or any non-earth being.
Robotkin: identifying as a robot, AI, or similar technology.
Objectkin: identifying as an object of some kind.
Conceptkin: identifying as a concept of some kind. This may overlap with fictionkin and musickin.
Musickin: identifying as a song, album, tune, or similar.
Plantkin: identifying as a tree, flower, or other plant.
Foodkin: identifying as a food of some kind.
Polykin: having multiple kintypes; identifying as multiple beings.
Halfkin or demikin: Those who identify partially as another species/a fictional being, rather than fully. A kin identity such as a Werewolfkin could be considered a halfkin under certain circumstances.
Therians or animalkin are people who feel their spirit is non-human, typically being an earthly animal. They are included under otherkin, though they describe those with more earthly-based spirits, and do not include creatures that are mythical, fictional, deities, magical, etc.
Therians may have animalistic impulses and instincts such as biting, hissing, scratching and panting, and they also may 'shift' and feel more animalistic at times, though not all therians shift. Some may engage in quadrobics (depending on the theriotype), wear faux tails, ears, and wings, and join therian packs to meet other members of the community.
Fictionkin (formerly known as mediakin) are those who identify as something found in fiction, including characters, species, glitches, etc. This may or may not be considered otherkin, since fictionkin includes human fictotypes, however it is typically included under the otherkin umbrella.
Some fictionkin believe they are reincarnated, some follow psychological beliefs for their identity, while some follow metaphysical beliefs (such as soul collecting.)
Hearted/Otherhearted/Fictionhearted
For the therian, otherkin and fictionkin community respectively, being ‘hearted is having a strong feeling of connection and kinship with a being. This differs from kin due to the fact that ‘hearted individuals identify with the creature, not as it.
Astral Shift
When someone’s astral body takes on the form of their kintypes during astral projection.
Aura Shift
When one’s aura takes on the shape of their kintypes.
Awakening
When Someone comes to the realization that they identify as nonhuman. This is not “becoming” or choosing to be a therian or kin, it is realizing what they were all along.
Berserker Shift
A type of deep mental shift where all human awareness is lost and the individual becomes their kintype completely (mentally, not physically.)
Bi-location Shift
A shift in which the shifter leaves their physical body and materializes elsewhere in the form of their kintype. Some people claim that the form is physical and can interact with objects, while others say it can not. This shift is a very controversial concept in the community.
Cladotherian
Someone who identifies as a whole clade of animals, rather than a specific species. For example, a feline cladotherian would identify as all species of felines, (tigers and bobcats and house cats etc...) or could be described as having a feline “essence,” without being able to narrow it down to a specific theriotype. They may have a few main forms, such as being a feline cladotherian that often has tiger and house cat shifts.
Contherian
A person who’s humanside and animalside are fully integrated, so they are in a consistent state of both human and animal at all times. They do not experience shifts because there is nothing to shift into.
Draconic
Describing the community of people who identify themselves as dragons spiritually or psychologically. Most of the old draconic community has merged with the ever-growing otherkin community.
Dream Shift
A dream Shift is when one is, or transforms into their theriotype in their dreams. When still searching for your kintype, dreams should be taken with a grain of salt, as they can often have other, non-literal meaning that’s not so obvious, and animal dreams do not always point to a kintype.
Emotional Shift
A shift that is triggered during certain emotions.
Greymuzzle
Someone who has been in the therian, otherkin or furry community for a long time and has a lot of wisdom and experience. This is not a self-given
Involuntary Shift
A shift that happens without conscious effort
Kintype/Kinself
The word used to describe the species or character one identifies as. Used mostly by otherkin and fictionkin.
Mental Shift
When one’s thoughts and behaviours change to resemble ones kintype. This can be anything from a mild animalistic urge, to a very strong shift in perception.
Paleotherian
A therianthrope that identifies as a creature that is extinct. Also can be called paleokin.
Phantom/Astral Limb
A phantom limb when one feels and receives sensory info from what feels like a limb when no such thing exists physically. This is experienced by amputees who have their limb, as well as therians and otherkin. The type that therians and otherkin feel specifically, are called supernumerary phantom limbs, because they feel limbs such as tails and wings that were never there in the first place, at least not in ones human life.
Phantom/Astral Limb Shift
A Phantom/Astral Limb shift is a Shift in which the kin feels the sensation of the body parts of their kintype, such as a cat therian feeling a tail, although there isn’t one there.
Polymorph
Not to be confused with polykin, a polymorph is someone who’s kintype shapeshifts into a vast array of forms, though they usually have a base form.
Polytherian/Polykin/Polywere
A polytherian, or, polykin is an individual who has more than one therio and/or kintype.
Psychological Therian/Kin
Someone who believes that their therianthropy/kinity stems from a psychological cause, such as abnormal brain wiring or imprinting.
Sensory Shift
A sensory shift is when a kins senses become heightened and more like that of their kintype. This is not a physical heightening of the senses (Senses can not be heightened beyond the limits of the human body,) but rather a heightened awareness of those senses, resulting in the person noticing them more.
Shapeshifterkin
Someone who has a kintype that is able to shift into other beings. This is not the same as actually claiming to be able to physically shift.
Shift
A change in state that causes one to become more like their kintype. There are many different kinds of shifts.
Species Dysphoria
A feeling of great discontentment/discomfort about ones human body. Feeling as if one was born the wrong species.
Spiritual Shift
When someone’s aura or astral body shifts into their kintype
Spiritual Therian/Otherkin
Someone who believes their therianthropy or kinity stems from spiritual causes.
Standard Therian/Otherkin
A therian or otherkin that only has one kintype.
Sun/syntherian
A suntherian is someone who’s theriotype is integrated in their personality. However, unlike contherians, they can have changes in mood that cause them to feel more or less non-human.
Synpath
Someone dwho identifies strongly with and has a deep connection to a creature. This is sometimes used interchangeably with otherhearted.
Therian Gear
Therian Gear are articles of clothing or accessories that some therians like to wear as a way of feeling more like their theriotype. They can be good relievers of dysphoria, but can also just be worn for fun. Some examples of Therian Gear would be a tail, an animal shirt, a therian necklace or a headband with animal ears attached.
Theriomythic
An Uncommon term used to describe someone who identifies as a mythical creature such as a dragon or gryphon, but feels more wild and instinctual, and often finds it easier to relate to the therian than the otherkin community.
Vacillant Therian
A therian whose therioside is integrated so that shifts occur fluidly as if on a sliding scale.
Voluntary Shift
A shift that is induced through conscious effort.

Note
we will go wild in amount of questions we ask: 2, 7, 8, 9, 14, 17 but inverted(are there any human members), 18, 23, 24, 32, 36
That's a lot of questions, so I'll be putting the answers under a cut!
2 - what are everyone's fashion tastes?
We don't really have distinct fashion tastes, honestly. There's only two things there which is that null doesn't care as much about fashion and I care a little more, and for a few weeks the new leather jacket we bought was a front trigger for me.
7 - how long have you known you're part of a system? has it taken other members a longer or shorter time to come around?
About 1.5 years now I think? Mostly there's one member who has the most amnesia barriers and it took a while to even realize she was there because of said amnesia barriers.
8 - what was the discovery process like for you?
It was a fairly simple process, mostly we learned about systems from talking to systems and then at one point null (jokingly) thought "what would [name] do", and got a very clear answer. From that point on it was pretty clear what was going on.
9 - what do you feel your origins are, if you feel comfortable sharing?
We don't really have any word for what our origins are, and also aren't especially interested in figuring it out. We just are, that's all.
14 - what is religion and spirituality like for your system, if applicable?
Mostly we're all atheists, but I do have a bit of a connection to the values of the way of flame. I've talked a bit about it, but some of the values of my source religion are still very important to me now, even if the beliefs are not relevant to me at this point.
17 but inverted - are there any human members?
We have a shared body identity which does include being human, and our protector is Literally Just Some Guy (except not really, but that's a whole other matter) so he's probably human. Sort of.
18 - do you have introjects? if so, where do they come from?
Yep, I think I'm a pretty obvious one myself, mainly my source is the idw1 continuity. And then there's sari, her source is transformers animated.
23 - do you wish you had more or less members, or are you happy with what you've got now?
We're happy with where we're at.
24 - how active are your other members? who's around in headspace the most? who fronts the most? who's dormant, if anyone?
We don't really have a headspace, it would take us effort to maintain and it's honestly not really important to us. Pretty much everyone (unless their role involves being less active) spends a decent amount of time in front.
32 - how has your system changed over time?
Mostly we've stopped consciously trying to work on things like headspace or co-consciousness, which has led to both of those things being... well, less of a thing. Aside from that though, not much has changed.
36 - name your favourite quality of all the members you can think of, including yourself.
Favourites are always a very very difficult thing for us, so I'm going to stick with just something I like without trying to define that as the absolute favourite. sari is always very sweet and cares about her friends a lot, null always tries their hardest to do the right thing, our protector is very kind, and I'm good at analysis :]

The Twin Peaks Guide to the Occult [3]
The Summoning of Spirits
Summoning is such a quintessential part of magick practice. This has been the case historically as well as currently. What is summoning? It is a particularly involved way of communicating with the self, and of picking and choosing aspects of our memory and personality that we then give animation to. We create a spirit within ourselves with these dimensions. The mind is incredible - particularly in its ability to model and to imagine. We are limited only by the boundaries of our imagination and memory.
Below is a method to summon entities. It is particularly easy to give animation to elements of our memory that we have a defined stereotype of. The characters of a show, people we know in person and have a long relationship with - drawing on our internal stereotypes of people we have a strong “sense” of is one of the easiest ways to develop an animate point of consciousness within our mind’s eye that can be talked to and influence our behavior in a way that feels abstracted from our main sense of self.
This can be used for many things. Gaining perspective. Modeling character interactions in a work of art - imagining and then modeling what will happen next in a story you are writing. The abstracted nature of these animate characters we can create in our mind lends themselves to spontaneous psychological effects and moments of inspiration - things that feel somewhat outside of our control. This adds variability to our thoughts. It’s also just a fun practice and it is interesting to play around with the mind and what it can do.
A Consideration of Character
The interactions between the various parties in Twin Peaks in addition to the general social  context of the town serves as one of the main points of interest in this  show. Twin Peaks presents a compelling and immersive community of  characters. Understanding and analyzing their motivations is a good  place to learn the general logic behind the idea of entity contact or summoning spirits.
For this summoning ritual, the only materials needed are your imagination and a quiet space. Enter your mental space that you set aside for considerations related to Twin Peaks and, perhaps, your studies of the occult more broadly. Model all of your senses in this space; attempt to immerse yourself as vividly as you can in your internal reality. This is now your entire reality; repeat this idea to yourself as you disavow information offered to you from your circumstances outside of your mind’s eye. Let go of daily life concerns, unpleasant physical sensations, and so on. All there is, is the internal world.
There are two main divisions in types of spirit work. Perceiving the other consciousness outside of yourself (evocation or summoning), and perceiving yourself as becoming this new consciousness (invocation or possession).
A third type involves hallucinating the other consciousness. A study of imposition (learning to consciously create hallucinations), which is outside of the scope of this post, can be used to provoke this third type. It is similar to the other two types but with a slightly different focus. A fourth type involves altered states such as dreams or the use of entheogens. A fifth type uses a ritual or other external cue. These latter three types are all different ways to obtain one of the former two types of entity experiences.
It is furthermore possible to integrate or transform the resulting abstracted consciousness into the self to change the self in the direction of that integrated consciousness. By being forced into direct contact with the consciousness as it integrates, the main self decides its own answer to the internal conflicts encountered by that consciousness.
External places and ideas have a type of consciousness to them, although it is experienced slightly different by the magick practitioner. This is likely due to the way the mind remembers information. It remembers information along certain axes. We have a division in our place vs. our person memory and the way we handle perception related to these two things.
Some people find it easier to shapeshift into a new consciousness. Other people find it easier to animate a consciousness that feels separate from themselves. Repeated attempts to access and animate the same concept/character increase the elaboration and complexity of the resulting spirit/animated and abstracted aspect of the self.
While in your internal space, visualize the character you wish to model. Imagine their appearance, their mannerisms. From there, it becomes a matter of modeling their mind. Focus on your internal stereotype of that person, focus on your sense of that other person, your feeling when you think of that person.
Route 1:
Draw your sense of that person into yourself. You become that person. Everything you do is checked between your logic vs. that other person’s. Everything in this trance state is done in the shape of that other person. All of your thoughts are this other person. After 10-15 minutes, more or less if you want, you can stop.
Route 2:
Imagine that other person separate from you, either in your mind’s eye or outside of yourself in your physical location. Have a conversation with that person. Model what they would say. After 10-15 minutes, stop for the day. At first, it will feel awkward and as though you are talking to yourself via a puppet, but after enough times it will become more natural and automatic, and you may find yourself slipping into that alternate perspective or hearing its internal logic comment on what you do throughout the day. Don’t forget to regularly remind yourself of the division between yourself and this part of your memory/personality/perception.
If you want to reintegrate with this abstracted sense of self, reverse the process. Take the feeling of that self and integrate it with your main sense of self. Visualize a picture, something symbolic, maybe of colors mixing to become a new color. Blue and red becoming purple. Keep reminding yourself that the only voice you hear inside your head is yours, and this is your thought process. It will quickly integrate into your main sense of self.
Don’t forget to come up with a cue that signals the beginning of a summoning/possession session and a cue that signals the end of it. Clean compartmentalization of behaviors and mental states is essential for a particularly vivid psychological experience.
Bob, Leland, and Mr. Robertson
Leland is one of the most compelling characters of the show. We see aspects of his psychology expressed indirectly in the events of the show. Leland, as Bob, is a character that affected the lives of not only his daughter, but of his co-workers and the people he engaged in criminal activity with. The various moves he makes to cover his second life are found peppered throughout the show; 25 years after the events of his daughter’s death and his subsequent suicide, his attempts to cover-up Bob are still being discovered - like with his attempt to hide his daughter’s journal entries in the police station that is only discovered in the third season.
Leland is one of the most interesting characters from this show to model, least of which being the wealth of information the show contains on his character. Leland is implied to have been a user of cocaine, and that fire was his metaphor for the high of cocaine. “Fire, walk with me.” Leland’s relationship with Mr. Robertson from his childhood is left mostly in the shadows; was it a sexual relationship? Did he witness Mr. Robertson kill someone? In either case, the psychological impact of Mr. Robertson on Leland’s childhood changed him as a person, leading to his possession by Bob in the show. It is a wonderful metaphor for the process of introjection itself, and how traumatic experiences and individuals can seem to haunt us for the rest of our lives. Not only did Leland find himself personally haunted by his experience with Mr. Robertson, but the way it affected Leland as a father to Laura affected her as well. Bob is a terrific metaphor for the psychological affects of these cycles of inherited trauma.
The Duality of Leland Palmer and Laura Palmer
Laura and Leland were similar and opposites in many interesting ways. There is an important contrast between the two that is worth considering. Laura and Leland both had difficult upbringings; Leland’s implied traumatic past and the implied trauma Laura witnessed from living in Leland’s household with its particular demands (his involvement in organized crime and drugs, and so on.) At the same time, it’s heavily implied that this makes them similar in some ways. Leland has a difficult time controlling his behavior, up to the point that Ben Horne calls for his murder (it is implied that Bob’s possession of Leland and his subsequent suicide may have been a metaphor for the psychological effects of Leland dodging Bob Horne’s hit) because he’s attracting too much attention. Leland was a man who could call a hit or kill a prostitute for fun, and it was implied he regularly practiced both things. Laura was not this sort of person at all and wanted to bring him down after discovering these things, making them opposites in a sense; however, this was Laura’s own approach to death, and it could be said this was how Bob manifested in Laura. Death by prison isn’t much better than death by hitman.

Objectkin: A person who identifies on an integral level as an inanimate object of some sort. Usually used by trolls, but some claim to have this identity.
Conceptkin: A person who identifies on an integral level as a concept, such as songkin or emotionkin. Their validity in the community is widely debated.

Fictionflicker: Flicker. A fictional identity which is temporarily taken on, usually after consuming media which the identity stems from. This usually ends shortly after the media has stopped being consumed.
Draconic: To describe people who identify as Dragons. Most of this old community has merged with the Otherkin community.

Antikin: Anti. Used to describe someone who trolls the Therian/Otherkin communities and refuses to listen to information provided about such communities, whilst spreading misinformation themselves.
Fluff: Fluffbunny. Someone who is suspicious or 'fluffy’, usually used in Otherkin communities. A 'fluffy’ person is commonly a person who makes extraordinary claims such as Physical Shifting. This term is falling out of use.
Tumblrkin: A term those in the Otherkin communities outside of Tumblr use to speak of a certain type of Otherkin within Tumblr that are overly fluffy and misinformed, who also usually give a bad name to the community.
Kinsidering: A pun on considering. Used by people from Tumblr to describe the act of questioning if an entity is their kintype.

SYSTEM KANEKI HC: an explanation post
rewrite of this post from a few months ago!! im posting it on this sideblog this time bc i keep changing my main’s url
disclaimer again: im a singlet but my gf @ditzgf gave me some info abt systes and answered some of my questions, and i did a lot of research abt systems b4 writing this post, but yea if i say anything bad tell me bc idk everything sdfghjklmù
this post will contain spoilers and will contain themes of abuse, torture, death, etc.
it’ll also be kinda messy and unorganized bc im bad @ putting my thoughts in2 words
kaneki is probably a system bc he has childhood trauma (his mother beating him up), an inner world (as depicted in a few chapters of tg and tg:re, during his torture or when haise and kaneki were communicating prior to the rose extermination operation), and in tg, Banjou once says that he still has his tender heart from be4 being tortured by Yamori, but he sometimes turns merciless like an on/off switch (which could just be a different alter)
two of the most striking pieces of evidence are tg:re chapter 144, where kaneki talks to different versions of himself,
Tumblr media
and tg chapter 140, where kuroneki hugs shironeki and thanks him for always fighting for the “weaker him”
Tumblr media
these panels both seem to show the different alters communicating in some sort of inner world.
the alters
i think we can easily identify a few different alters.
one of them is Rize. (not exactly the “real” Rize. this alter would be an introject of her)
At certain points, kaneki is seen talking to her despite her being supposedly dead. In the manga, he talks to her when he’s being tortured, and when he’s “dragon”. in the anime, she is much more present, seemingly tormenting him after his transformation into a ghoul. when fighting amon for the first time, kaneki even says he’s letting her take control of his body. I think Rize is a persecutor because she is very often tormenting kaneki, probably with the goal of making him “stronger”.
Tumblr media
another easily identifiable alter is Haise. He doesn’t remember anything of his life as “kaneki”, and he seems to be struggling with the fact that many people see him as kaneki and not as his own person,
Tumblr media
I think there was also an introject of Hide at some point, since when Kaneki fights Arima in tg:re, Hide appears and tells him to keep on living.
Another important thing to note is that all these different alters seem to have “appeared” during stressful times. Rize -> when Kaneki was turned into a ghoul Shironeki -> when Yamori tortured him Centipede -> after Kanou tells him a ghoul named Yoshimura is the leader of Aogiri and Kaneki believes he is talking abt the manager 240/Haise -> after Arima “kills” Kaneki Black Reaper -> almost dying during the Rose Suppression Operation One-eyed king & Hide-> fighting against Arima a 2nd time
anyways those r my thoughts dxgfhtguyuhjikolp

THE DETACHMENT OF THE CONSCIOUSNESS FROM THE OBJECT
By understanding the unconscious we free ourselves from its domination. That is the basis and also the aim of the instructions in our text. The pupil is taught how he must concentrate on the Light of the inmost region, and, at the same time, free himself from all outer and inner bondage. His life-will is guided toward a consciousness without content which none the less permits all contents to exist. The Hui Ming Ching says about this detachment : —
" A halo of Light surrounds the world of the law. We forget each other, quiet and pure, altogether powerful and empty. The emptiness is irradiated by the light of the heart of heaven. The water of the sea is smooth and mirrors the moon in its surface. The clouds dissapear in blue space; the mountains shine clear. Consciousness reverts to contemplation; the moon disk rests alone.'
This description of the state of fulfillment pictures a  psychic condition which could perhaps best be characterized as a detachment of consciousness from the world, and a withdrawal of it to an extra-mundane point so to speak. In this way, consciousness is both empty and not empty. It is no longer preoccupied with the. images of things but merely contains them. The fullness of the world which heretofore pressed upon consciousness has lost none of its richness and beauty, but no longer dominates consciousness.
The magical claim of things has ceased because the original interweaving of consciousness with the world has come to an end. The unconscious is not projected any more, and so the primal participation mystique with things is abolished. Therefore, consciousness is no longer preoccupied with compulsive intentions, but turns into contemplative vision, as the Chinese text very aptly says.
How did this effect come about ? (We grant assume of course, that the Chinese author was first of all not a liar ; secondly, that he was of sound mind ; and, thirdly, that he was an extraordinarily intelligent man.) To understand or explain the detachment described in the text our mentality requires a somewhat roundabout approach. There is no use in our mimicking Eastern sensibility; for nothing would be more childish than to wish to aestheticize a psychic condition such as this. This detachment is something I am familiar with in my practice; it is the therapeutic effect par excellence, for which I labour with my students and patients, that is, the dissolution of participation mystique.
With a stroke of genius, Levy-Briihl has laid down the condition he calls participation mystique as the hall-mark of primitive mentality. As described by him it is simply the indefinitely large remnant of non-differentiation between subject and object, still so great among primitives that it cannot fail to strike the European conscious standpoint. In so far as the difference between subject and object does not become conscious, unconscious identity prevails.
The unconscious is then projected into the object, and the object is introjected into the subject, that is to say, psychologized. Plants and animals then behave like men ; men are at the same time themselves and animals also, and everything is alive with ghosts and gods. Naturally, civilized man regards himself as immeasurably above these things. Instead, often he is identified with his affects and prejudices, and shamelessly accuses others of the things he will not see in himself. In a word, even he is afflicted with a remnant of primal unconsciousness, or non-differentiation between subject and object. His mind, nearly as much as much as the primitive's, is full of disturbing contents and he uses just as many apotropaeic charms. He no longer works the magic with medicine bags, amulets, and animal sacrifices, but with nerve remedies, neuroses, 'progress', the cult of the will, and so forth."
But if the unconscious can be recognized as a co-determining quantity along with the conscious, and if we can live in such a way that conscious and unconscious, or instinctive demands, are given recognition as far as possible, the centre of gravity of the total personality shifts its position. It ceases to be in the ego, which is merely the centre of consciousness, and instead is located in a hypothetical point between the conscious and the unconscious, which might be called the self. If such a transposition succeeds, it results in doing away with participation mystique, and a personality develops that suffers only in the lower stories, so to speak, but in the upper stories is singularly detached from painful as well as pleasing events.
The creation and birth of this superior personality is the achievement meant by our text when it speaks of the " holy fruit ", the " diamond body ", or in other ways to an indestructible body. These expressions are psychologically symbolical of an attitude which is out of reach of intense emotional involvement and therefore safe from absolute shock; they symbolize a consciousness detached from the world. I have reasons for believing that this sets in after the middle of life and is actually a natural preparation for death. To the psyche death is just as important as birth and, like it, is an integral part of life. What happens finally to the detached consciousness in the end is a question the psychologist cannot be expected to answer. Whatever theoretical position he assumed, he would hopelessly overstep the boundaries set him by science. He can only point out that the views of our text with respect to the timelessness of the detached consciousness, are in harmony with the religious majority of mankind. A person thinking differently would stand outside the human order in some way, and therefore, would be suffering from a disturbed psychic equilibrium. Thus, as a physician then, I make a great effort to fortify the belief in immortality as far as I can, especially in my older patients to whom such questions are crucial. If viewed correctly in the psychological sense, death is not an end but a goal, and therefore life towards death begins as soon as the meridian is passed.
Chinese yoga philosophy bases itself upon the fact of this instinctive preparation for death as a goal, and, following the analogy with the goal of the first half of life, namely, begetting and reproduction, or the means towards perpetuation of physical life, it takes as the aim of spiritual existence, the begetting and perpetuation of a psychic spirit-body (" subtle body "), which ensures the continuity of the detached consciousness. It is the birth of the pneumatic man, known to the European from antiquity, but which he seeks to produce by quite other symbols and magical practices, by faith and Christian way of life. Here again we stand on a basis quite different from that of the East. Again the text sounds as though it were not very far from Christian ascetic morality, but nothing would be further from the truth than to assume that it is actually dealing with the same thing. Behind our text is a culture thousands of years old, one which has been developed out of, and beyond, primitive instincts, and which, therefore, knows nothing about the brutal morality suited to us as recently civilized, barbaric Teutonic peoples. For this reason, there is lacking to the Chinese that impulse toward violent repression of the instincts which makes our spirituality hysterically exaggerated and poisonous. Whoever lives his instincts can also separate from them, and in just as natural a way as he lived them. Any idea of heroic self-conquest would be entirely foreign to the sense of our text, but it would inevitably amount to that if we followed the Chinese instructions literally.
We must never forget our historical premises. Only a little more than a thousand years ago, we stumbled from the crudest beginnings of polytheism into the midst of a highly developed, oriental religion which lifted the imaginative minds of half-savages to a height which did not correspond to their degree of mental development.
In order to keep to this height in some fashion or other, it was unavoidable that the sphere of the instincts should be thoroughly repressed. Therefore, religious practice and morality took on an outspokenly brutal, almost malicious, character. The repressed elements are naturally not developed, but vegetate further in the unconscious and in their original barbarism. We would like to climb the heights of a philosophical religion, but are, in fact, incapable of it. The best we can do is to grow up to it.
The Amfortas wound and the Faustian conflict in the Germanic man are not yet healed ; his unconscious is still loaded with contents which must first be made conscious before he can be free of them. Recently I received a letter from a former patient which pictures the necessary transformation in simple but expressive words. She writes : " Out of evil, much good has come to me. By keeping quiet, repressing nothing, remaining attentive, and hand in hand with that, by accepting reality — taking things as they are, and not as I wanted them to be — by doing all this, rare knowledge has come to me, and rare powers as well, such as I could never have imagined before. I always thought that, when we accept things, they overpower us in one way or another. Now this is not true at all, and it is only by accepting them that one can define an attitude toward them. So now I intend on playing the game of life, being receptive to whatever comes to me, good and bad, sun and shadow that are for ever shifting, and, in this way, also accepting my own nature with its positive and negative sides. Thus everything becomes more alive to me. What a fool I was ! How I tried to force everything to go according to my idea ! "
Only on the basis of such an attitude, which renounces none of the values won in the course of Christian development, but which, on the contrary, tries with Christian charity and forbearance to accept the humblest things in oneself, will a higher level of consciousness and culture be possible. This attitude is religious in the truest sense, and therefore therapeutic, for all religions are therapies for the sorrows and disorders of the soul.
The development of Western intellect and will has lent us the almost devilish capacity for imitating such an attitude, apparently with success too, despite the protests of the unconscious. But it is only a matter of time when the counter position always forces recognition of itself with an even harsher contrast. A more and more unsafe situation comes about by reason of this crass imitation, and, at any time, can be overthrown by the unconscious. A safe foundation is only found when the instinctive premises of the unconscious win the same recognition as the view-points of the conscious. No one will deceive himself as to the fact that this necessary recognition of the unconscious stands in violent opposition to the Western Christian, and especially to the Protestant, cult of consciousness. Despite the fact that the new is always hostile to the old, a deep desire to understand cannot fail to discover that, without the more serious application of our acquired Christian values, the new can never gain ground.
