So, this is something I've wanted to do since literally second grade. Dictionary drawings. I'm not going to tell you which word each page is, because that's fun to me. And it should be obvious. It'll take a while, but I'm going to do EVERY page in my 501 page Websters dictionary I got for free in third grade, ripping out the pages one by one. I'm going to release them in incriments of five.
This is pages 1-5. I have pages 6-24 also finished so expect all that soon. Anywho's, super excited. Hope you like it! :D <3

AFAICT the problem is that Standard English does exist, but the Standard English doesn't (unlike the situation with Italian, Croatian, or Icelandic; I'm not sure to what extent this is true for German, French, or Spanish, all of which are spoken in multiple major countries) - that is, there's about two dozen (maybe more) different claims to Standard English, from Orrm to Wijk (and maybe a few even later than that - Rosenfelder in particular might qualify).
AFAIK probably the only one of those with lasting influence to the present day is Noah Webster's standard, though Brigham Young's standard also has some extant currency, and I guess Strunk & White's standard would count if we ignore how incomplete it is.
Tumblr media
The mid-18th century, but yes. AFAIK post-1776 there's been no attempts to impose a cross-national standard on English that didn't flop so horribly that they hardly count.

Y'all. Kraft just erected an 8 foot tall monument to its own mayonnaise outside of Merriam Webster's HQ in Springfield in an effort to make "Moist" Merriam Webster's word of the year. It feels like an article from the fucking Onion but this is real life

If Harry is Disco, does that make Kim the Elysium?
Definition of Elysium of course being “an eternal paradise in ancient Greek mythology originally only for heroes and others granted immortality by the gods and later also for the blessed dead and those who lived a righteous life” according to Merriam Webster’s Dictionary.
Seem kinda gay to me if so 👀👀

guy at work today was being kind of weird about Midwestern accents at me during team lunch ("can you say something in your accent?" "explain it to me") and then of course he dropped the "I don't think we [Californians] have accents, we speak with the correct pronunciation, so we don't have an accent."
and I swear to god the other coworker (wonderful Persian woman who tells me about her cats and her garden, I knew two weeks into the job that I loved her) eating lunch with us saw the fucking health bar pop up over my head and heard my fight music start. bc she laughed right as I leaned in with the polite smile of someone who is about to be a menace and asked him who gets to decide which way of speaking is the "correct" one.

writing tumblr posts is easy because i can be as incoherent as i want and a certain number of people will probably like it anyway (<3) however writing emails makes me feel like i'll be hunted for sport if i phrase anything in a suboptimal way
