#Witchcraft Gender & Marxism

Text
i watched a philosophy tube video about witchcraft, gender and marxism. and it put into words something that i knew already. capitalism can not exist in a magical realm because there is nothing to exploit. magic is by definition the creation of something from nothing. in my magical world, at the time of [D2], there is turmoil. there is a growing movement to capitalise the world, to industrialise. this is at odds with the small local communities who want to live at peace with the world, and i think it raises an interesting question. the ethics of scale and the idea that humans were not designed to live such a widely connected life. people live in large scale communities, but never alone. it's more... a whole village combined into one building. and the social system has shifted to accommodate this change of state.
i feel this utopian ideal of a tight knit community designed to help each other out is at odds with the systemic flaws needed to cause and effect my way into a tight story. maybe the situation can be.. government is insisting the ways of old are correct, and the people refusing to accept.
though with magic being able to fix most social issues, i think people would be more aware of political issues.
omfg i completely forgot about contract magic. exploitative capitalism is back on the table bois. now the bougousie has an extremely literal way to control you, through magic that binds you to remove bodily autonomy in the name of "protecting yourself" all so that you can consume product.
this then evolves into a greater control of people and bodily autonomy in E set through the use of [redacted]

Thursday Night Link Roundup - October 29th Halloween Edition!
I was about to start this and then realized: Halloween is Saturday!
And when I say “realized,” I mean “remember, forgot, and then remembered again.”
So instead of making a list of things I’ve watched this week, here’s a list of Halloween or Halloween adjacent things :)
So this is one of my favorite Philosophy Tube videos: Witchcraft, Gender, & Marxism. I love the costumes, the atmosphere, and the crackling fire, and the “if you take this line of thought too far you can end up in a bad place” jokes in the form of random conservative types calling him. I love his facial expressions then like, “That way is the primrose path of dalliance... also, griftery.”
youtube
It made me buy one of the books he mentioned to learn more, and of course I had to go look up a bunch of papers to read them, lol. I’m sure my professors thought I was bloating my papers with Too Many Citations, but I’m really just a fan of researching.
I found this by watching a video about Peter Kropotkin’s book Mutual Aid (which I think I’ve posted before).
[EDIT: I took the section about “witches and beer” out because I found out later that it was wrong. The Halloween TNLR from 2021 has a video explaining the actual history of the witch hat.]
It’s sort of wild just how much of capitalism had to be violently forced on people, to the point of - after realizing that beer making could be profitable - priests making sermons about how women shouldn’t be in commerce. It’s just fucking wild. Like: when your economic philosophy is so far removed from what makes people happy and what lets them enjoy life that you need to use your religion to brainwash them into thinking otherwise? Wild.
I still haven’t watched the second season of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I’m not even sure how, like, it’s there, I can watch it, I think I’ve just been way too busy. Which I know is probably partly an excuse, but when you have no time, you really want to expend what you do have on stuff that needs to get done, you know?
Anyway, I do have time to watch Nightmare Masterclass’ Sabrina and the Economics of Necromancy… because it’s not an entire season of a show, lol.
youtube
I had not really put together the “liberal progressives” vs “regressive conservatives” aspect of the show together. Like, I probably got some of it (it’s been a while since I watched the first season and I have no memory, I don’t remember), but I don’t think I had put it together in so many words as NM.
I need to watch it again. I miss my girl Prudence.
Aspirations.
We all have them.
Here’s mine:
youtube
Though I will admit, I love the campy nature of the 60s show way more than the 90s movies. I love the 60s brand of vaudevillian weirdness that just doesn’t find them weird, and I find the 90s versions maybe a smidge too malicious. Though, I will walk into anyone’s house and question their choice of pastels - or, lately, grey - grey is not a color, it is a shade. Even the original Addams set was awash in hues:
Tumblr media
Now you might be thinking, “Isn’t it just colored that way because each of those colors reads as a different grey in black and white TV?” And you wouldn’t be wrong, that’s definitely a reason. Or you might think, “What? That’s garish!” And - if you were one of those people who’s currently remodeling their kitchen/living room/bathroom, in shades of grey I would tell you that, while your logic is sound to you, it is not correct. Also, if you’ve ever had the pleasure of being in a Victorian Era home (I grew up in one and I’ve been on tours of quite a few in addition to Victorian Home magazines being the only magazines my mother subscribed to), that decor isn’t garish by any means. It’s actually quite normal; I’ve been in houses that looked like that. The Victorians were wild about color.
Also, I just adore John Astin as Gomez. What a Mensch. I need to find the Halloween Anniversary TV movie. I used to watch it constantly as a kid.
Anyway, for the last of the videos that will embed, here’s some idiots:
youtube
They’re so dumb and also drunk. Watching it made me feel like I’m drunk, and also, a little spooked because I’m sitting here drinking a matcha latte as I type this.
On crashing weddings:
“We can find one.”
“That would be a little hard.”
“Now, currently, in this climate: yes.”
“Also you’re ten thousand feet tall.”
[Wheeze] “I’m not ten thousand feet.”
“They won’t be like, ‘Look at those two guys mingling in the crowd,’ they’ll be like ‘Hey, who’s that fucking squatch.”
“We’ll just find a-- a tall wedding.” [Wheeze] “Then they’ll be like, ‘Who is that little boy over there?’
“We just can’t win!”
“We can’t win!”
I love that they roast each other, lol.
Songs of the Week:
Spooky Scary Skeletons (Remix) (Extended Mix) (Spooktober Theme Song)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mrGdGMNsv0
That’s it. That’s the post.
LACUNA COIL - Swamped
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOuxOUYycoU
What does this song have to do with Halloween? You can hear it in a certain vampire-related RPG. Hello to my Malkavian brothers and sisters.
Night On Bald Mountain - Fantasia (1941)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLCuL-K39eQ
Mussorgsky had absolutely no right going this hard… but it’s a good thing he did. I sort of love Russian composers because they’re big believers in just… whatever this large, bombastic style is called. “It’s less ‘oui oui,’ and more ‘dasvidaniya.’”
I also was in love with the way the ghosts floated out of their graves as a kid, they’re so wispy and like smoke and didn’t look like animations, but magic to a five year old in the 90s. But the things flying at the viewer in the last third used to scare the hell out of me.

on magic and sin
EDIT (16 Sept 2019): Now on Ao3 with a few tweaks!
The philosophy of magic isn’t to answer questions but to solve problems.
This is the point of Heaven. Contrary to popular belief, no bureaucracy exists in Heaven. It just becomes the lens we humans see the order through, what we think order looks like, all the corporate-looking things: the suits, the windows overlooking humanity, the hierarchy of the Hosts etc. Because Heaven's philosophy really is not to question. It’s to just be, to just do.
So Aziraphale doesn’t really have paperwork, because paperwork is Hellish and humane. That’s not to say it’s beneath them, but angels aren’t terribly fond of human things, and human concepts are just so primitive. Heaven has order because they believe order to be what Heaven should be about and therefore, they have it.
It’s not terribly efficient, of course, because one lie could cripple the system. But since a whole Host of angels believe in order, no one, not even the fledgling angels, think to disobey or lie.
Except for Aziraphale.
Earth is a grey area. There are limits to Heaven (and Hell and magic) out there. One needs a funnel to carry that magic into a plane of existence without killing people with how Eldritch it is with incomprehensible power (a corporation, in this case). Aziraphale, one of the first four angels assigned on Earth, changed.
This, of course, is bad in Heaven’s eyes.
For example:
The first sin was committed by an angel. Lucifer did not lie. They bore in their heart, or the celestial equivalent of it, the fruit of contempt for humans despite being a being of Love. They gave out the seeds of doubt like free samples in a market. The first meteor shower, as it was seen on Earth, looked beautiful but smelled of brimstone that did not waft into the gates of Eden.
The second sin was committed by a human. Eve did lie, but only later on. She was tempted with the taste of forbidden fruit and gave out the Knowledge it served her as a death sentence to her and Adam, not out of contempt, but out of concern for him. A doubt expressed once lead to mortality and suffering, a hand guiding the sword of skin-of-the-teeth-survival with a tight grip of desperation.
The third sin was committed by a part time bookshop owner/angel. Aziraphale lied, over and over and over until the words of it became him. ‘Where is the flaming sword I had given you,’ asked God, but the question came more as a dare, a temptation. And Aziraphale—held with the conviction that he'd done the right thing and bearing contempt in his heart at the cruelty subjected on humanity for the sin of Knowledge—bit into the fruit of this temptation with the gusto of Heaven's only food enthusiast, licking every last drop with the self-satisfaction of the right.
Magic exists in Heaven to solve problems, favours, to keep questions at bay, to clear away lines of hierarchy and power. Archangels are not more, seraphim are not more, principalities are not more. Hierarchy is Hellish and humane. Heaven is neither and nothing. Aziraphale, who has seen power reveal wrong, knows that this is bullshit.
And so, the principality Aziraphale stayed on Earth for millennia after Eden. The reports are prayers, the deeds of the day whispered through gritted teeth. He falls, not from grace, but hard and fast for the messiness of the humanity he sacrificed for. He courts a demon who loves just as, if not more fiercely and steadfastly than he.
He stops the apocalypse because he believes it should be stopped and goes humbly back to his bookshop, magic singing ineffability into the order Crowley demands from it.

4. Boris Johnson/Downing Street statement
What we asked:
The Mail on Sunday reported on the 5th of October that a senior government source told them that Lizz Truss was handed the women & equalities brief by Dominic Cummings in an attempt to "strangle" the issue of GRA reform. Is this true?
At the Pink News awards last week, former women & equalities minister Penny Mordaunt said that she believes the British people are "good" and she knows that because (in her words): "Unlike you, I have seen the results of the consultation." She also went in to seemingly call for the release of the consultation results. Has the Prime Minister seen the results? Is he involved in the decision in reguards to when the results will be released?
What are the Prime Ministers current views on Gender Recognition Act reform?
Statement they sent to us:
A Downing Street spokesperson said:
"The PM has a long and strong record on LGBT rights, and he is a proud champion of equality. He has been repeatedly clear that we must do more to ensure that trans rights are protected.
"That’s why we have consulted on potential reforms to the Gender Recognition Act. It is vital that any next steps are carefully considered and have the right backing in order to have a positive impact on the trans community in the UK.
“The Government received more than 100,000 responses to the consultation and met with 140 organisations to ensure concerns were heard from all sides of the debate. We’ll set out next steps in due course.”
5. Liz Truss/Government eqaulity office statement
Questions we asked:
The Mail on Sunday reported that a "senior government source" told them that Lizz Truss got the women & eqaulities brief from Dominic Cummings because the minister is against "children being helped to seek transition" thinks giving her the brief will "strangle" the issue. Is this true?
What are the minister's views on GRA reform?
What are the minister's views on transgender children?
Last week Penny Mordaunt heavily implied that the results of the GRA consultation were "good" and called on the government to release the results of the consultation. Can we get a comment from the minister on this? Is it true that the results are in favour of GRA reform?
Can we have a copy of the consultation results? If not, why not?
It has been just over a year since the consultation came to a close, why haven't the results been released yet? Is Downing Street ordering the GEO to hold back on releasing the results?
Statement they sent to us:
It is vital that the next steps on any potential reform of the Gender Recognition Act are carefully planned, and have the right backing so they can have a positive impact on the adult trans community in the UK.
We had more than 100,000 responses to our consultation and have met with 140 organisations to ensure that we have taken into account views and concerns from all sides of the debate. We will announce more detail on our proposed next steps in due course.
At the Pink New Awards, Minister for Equalities, Baroness Williams, said:
"I remain committed to the reform of the GRA...I want as minister [of state] for equalities to live in a world where people at work and at home can be who they are."
In July, as part of the LGBT Action Plan, the Government announced its intention to publish a call for evidence on the experiences of people who have a non-binary gender identity.
This is an emerging and complicated area of policy, and one in which the Government is still developing its research and understanding. The evidence gathered from this exercise will inform the Government's next steps in this area.
