Unleashing Creativity: Top Ways to Generate Unique Fantasy Story Ideas
Tumblr media
Photo: Standard License- Adobe Stock
Welcome back,
There's no denying that fantasy has been at the core of some of the most enchanting, daring, and downright unforgettable tales (for one reason or another) that have shaped the literary landscape. Who doesn't love the thrill of journeying to some new adventurous place with otherworldly creatures and epic battles between the forces of dark and light? Personally, I'm all about the dark side. Even for the most seasoned writers sparking the imagination can be difficult. Things like inspiration seem elusive as a dragon hiding in a mist-covered mountain. Today, I will cover a few ideas to find your muse. My muse sometimes hides in a dumpster...so let's find better ways to do this, shall we?
People Watching, with a Twist: Observing people in everyday situations can be a great source of inspiration. Now, add a layer of 'What If?'. What if the barista at your local coffee shop could control elements? What if the older woman feeding pigeons in the park was a retired warrior queen? This exercise allows you to create complex characters with intriguing backstories, ripe for the world of fantasy.
Travel Through Time: History is brimming with periods that, with a little twist, can become fantastic settings for your story. Victorian England's social hierarchies, the Renaissance's scientific innovations, and the fierce battles of Feudal Japan offer fertile ground for fantastical tales. Weave in elements of magic or mythical creatures, and you have an intoxicating cocktail of historical fact and enticing fantasy.
Bioinspiration – Fantasize with Flora and Fauna: The natural world is a veritable treasure trove of inspiration. Let's call this approach 'bioinspiration.' Start by exploring Earth's biodiversity's peculiar traits, behaviors, and survival mechanisms. Why not envision a species that communicates like whales but hunts like a pack of wolves? Or perhaps a plant that blooms under the moonlight and has the power to manipulate time? The possibilities are endless when you fuse the wonder of our world with a dash of fantasy.
Take a Hike (Literally!): When was the last time you truly engaged with the wilderness, the mountains, or the sea? Natural landscapes are rife with potential for fantasy storytelling. As you walk through a dense forest, consider the creatures that might inhabit such a place in a fantasy realm. That murmuring stream could be a water nymph's dwelling, and the wind howling through the canyon might be a dragon's call. Try to visualize your surroundings through the lens of fantasy — you may be surprised at what your imagination conjures up!
Harness the Power of Music: Like music, few things can stir the soul and spark the imagination. A piece of music can evoke many emotions and images depending on its rhythm, melody, and harmony. Try listening to music without lyrics (like classical, orchestral, or ambient music) and let your mind wander. Picture the scenes that the music evokes. Is that tranquil harp melody the song of a peaceful elven village? Does the tumultuous symphony represent the climax of an epic battle? Use these mental images as a springboard for your fantasy narrative.
So there it is, everyone. Five unique ways to draw up some inspiration. Go find your muse!! Probably shouldn't have said mine hides in a dumpster. I'm all about being superstitious, so I'm sure she'll never speak to me again.
Happy Writing,
Indigo Everly

Readers don’t like walls of text. But books are nothing but text, so obviously text itself isn’t the issue. The problem is that these indigestible chunks of narrative are monotonous – belaboring one type of narration instead of moving on.
But believe it or not, the opposite issue is even worse. Essential aspects of narration can be underused or absent altogether. This issue is so grievous that it’s usually addressed before publication. So while missing narration is a mere pest for bestselling books, it’s a recurring villain in the manuscripts we edit.
That’s why writers need to understand all of the roles narration can play. Each one has benefits and drawbacks, so balance and timing are key to telling a great story. To that end, let’s look at the five types of narration every fiction book needs and when to use them.

Vocabulary list for writers: EXPLANATION
📚✍️ Looking to spice up the way you explain your explanations? Check out these cool options!
Tumblr media
List summary: Account, accountancy, aide-mémoire, alibi, amplification, analysis, anatomising (also spelled anatomizing), annotation, apologia, argument, assay, assessment, breakdown, briefing, caveat, clarification, commentary, confession, construction, contextualisation (also spelled contextualization), and counsel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
💭 Uhh, why this topic in particular? 🤔
You see, we’ll be doing a lot of explaining, discussing, analysing, surmising, and whatnot during our
🗨️ Q&As
🗨️ Consultations
🗨️ Creative collaborations
(That’s a promise! 🫵🏼)
So, I thought, “What could be a better list to write than EXACTLY about the sheer level of clear communication we’ll practice?”
Anyway, anyway... I bet you won’t believe I originally intended this list to have only around 5–10 words! 🤯
🦗🦗🦗
[Crickets suddenly stop in shock]
Yep, it’s true! I overdid myself with this one… 😅
Now that you’ve read the first 21 out of 77, why not stay tuned for more vocabulary fun?
The next parts to this Masterlist of Words Similar/Related to “Explanation” will launch soon! 🚀 ...enough. Hold on to your rockets, fellas 😂
🍔 QOTD 🍔
Which word here is your favourite?
Yes, you have to choose just one!!! 🔪
‼️ DISCLAIMER‼️
I’m not claiming these words are true synonyms (i.e., having the exact same meaning as one another). They are not at all synonymous with each other, but they convey ideas or actions that resemble, complement, or specify the word “explanation”, which—if used with caution—can enhance the quality and impact of your writing, speech, and even your own thoughts and mindset.
In any case, it’s always a good idea to expand our vocabulary, even if we don’t use these new words right away. After all, science says language learning is good for brain health, so, why not? 🧠

I have never been proud
of much
about myself.
So if words are all
I have
then I am rich indeed.
They thrust a dagger into my chest
pain splintering into my
bones
and instead of blood
out pour thick black letters.
I do not have much
beyond this ink-dark
form of
self-expression.

ASMR
BY COREY VAN LANDINGHAM
Why not climb up the mountain             of delight? To this world’s thin
meridian, why not be not elsewhere, not cellaring the sulk and brood, pores cavernous
and visible, the rustling aspen portentous, the sorry
            unsaid. This world. Hello.

\\English below//
Being alone in the circle, condensing the energy, calling up the spirit of the place, the spirit of the ancestors, the directions, the elements. Refocus, hold your breath, let the sound spring forth. Spinning. Stillness. The veil is torn. No longer so alone, filling the space and time that are unravelling. appearing in hollows, to be out of one and out of the other. Staring at the candle flame, closing our eyes and seeing it again, red edged with yellow and green. Repeating the sacred words, saying the prayers, clearing the air. The black, the dark, and the vision weaves, consolidates, tapestry on a weft. I could sing, I could dance, but I concentrate. I connect, pull and knot threads, unravel others. The water is cool, the smoke heavy. The cards sparkle under my fingers. The symbols take shape. Offerings are made. Thanks are said. The circle is broken, dissolved. The energies are deposited on the ground, on my forehead, flowing towards the ground, towards the Earth. Back to the here and now. The magic remains.

as much as i want fairytale au to be short and sweet (relative to my other works) i'm currently gripped by a powerful urge to write copious amounts of wish fulfillment fantasy description wherein a benign old white man painstakingly cleans up my house and gives me a bath while i'm girlrotting on the floor and he's sooooo tormented over my state of existence which btw he is indirectly responsible for so he should feel more than a little ashamed!!! and also he falls in familial love with me. is there anything more beautiful in this world

What’s that, a second post on writing rules from Kurt Vonnegut? It’s as if I’ve become unstuck in time! Or maybe a commenter pointed out that the prolific author had at least one other set of rules floating around, and I just had to cover it.
You might notice a few things are different this time around. For one thing, Vonnegut is specifically talking about writing with style. What is style in this context? I read his article twice and I’m still not entirely sure, but my best guess is that he’s using it as a vague shorthand for wordcraft quality. The introduction talks about how your writing “sounds,” which could be a measure of how distinctive it is, but the rest of the piece casts a wider net.

I like doing an extremely close/limited 3rd person but there are stories not served by it. I wish there wasn't so much fashion to what lit devices are consider "well written", "realistic", "artistic." I end up making stories smaller, so I can shoehorn narratives into whatever the moderne glass slipper is and it's just a bummer.
I feel like, somewhere along the way, people forgot that Third Person POV is supposed to allow more distance than First Person and have instead started treating Third Person as "First Person But We Use She/He Pronouns".

i've started thinking of you like a spell. i have to wear the right clothes and speak a quiet incantation at evening's close and maybe, if the sun set at the right time and the moon's rise aligned, you would magick into existence against all odds and just in the nick of time.
but men are not magic, nor women divine. all power in me was always a lie. my circle was not made to summon a soul. and just like myself, i must let you go.

The Guardian of Northlock Manor | Wordpress
Tumblr media
IT ALL STARTS WITH AN IDEA WHERE A CITY CAN EXIST WITHIN A CITY — WHERE A WRITER CAN WRITE ABOUT A WORLD INSIDE THE PAGES OF A NOTEBOOK — OR MAYBE EVEN A WORDPRESS BLOG.
NORTHLOCK MANOR IS A PLACE THAT I’M PRETTY SURE DOESN’T REALLY EXIST ANYWHERE IN THIS WORLD BECAUSE IT’S A PLACE I GO TO WHEN I’M WRITING FICTION. IT’S A PLACE THAT I MADE UP SO THIS MEANS THAT AS THE GUARDIAN OF NORTHLOCK MANOR, I’M ALSO GUARDING THE SECRETS OF A WORLD THAT EXISTS WITHIN OURS. I’M SLOWLY FINDING THE WORDS TO MAKE THIS BELONG INSIDE THE PAGES OF MY MANUSCRIPT.
WORD-CRAFT IS LIKE BREWING TEA ON A RAINY AFTERNOON AND WATCHING THE ELEMENTS BATTLE OUTSIDE THE GLASS WINDOWS AND THINKING ABOUT HOW FANTASTICAL IT IS TO BE THE GUARDIAN OF THE MANUSCRIPT YOU ARE STILL WRITING. WHY MUST THIS BE A SECRET? BECAUSE IF TOO MANY PEOPLE WANTED TO WRITE THE SAME THING, THEN THERE WOULD BE A FIGHT OVER WHOSE VERSION IS BETTER. BUT WHEN YOU ARE ALONE AND THE NIGHT SKY IS AT WAR, YOU KIND OF KNOW THAT WHEN THE ELEMENTS ARE DONE FIGHTING, YOU HAVE TO GET BACK TO WORK. THIS IS WHAT THE WORLD OF WORD-CRAFT MEANS TO ME.
AS THE GUARDIAN OF NORTHLOCK MANOR, IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE THAT THE PAGES OF THIS MANUSCRIPT IS SAFELY TRADED ACROSS FICTION TO REALITY. YOU CAN FIND ME ON WATTPAD AND ON SOCIAL MEDIA, LIKE INSTAGRAM AND THREADS AND TUMBLR. IF YOU WANT TO SUPPORT ME ON KO-FI, IT WOULD MEAN A LOT TO ME. AND IF YOU EVER WANT TO CONTACT ME, IT’S ACTUALLY QUITE EASY TO DO SO. AND LASTLY, I’M NOT ON TWITTER OR TIKTOK A LOT SO IF I’M LATE TO RESPOND, PLEASE DON’T TAKE IT TOO SERIOUSLY.
MY NAME IS NICOLE LENNON AND SOMETIMES PEOPLE CALL ME NOLLY. I’M ONLY A WATTPAD WRITER SO I BELONG TO THE CHAOTIC MESS OF REALITY. SEE YOU ON SOCIAL MEDIA.
// YA Novel 'Everett Academy' by Nicole Lennon is now on Wattpad. Uploaded every Wednesday. #cozyautumnvibes

Really dope that every day you wake up and decide to provide voice & verbiage for people who want to justify using AI without any deeper thought on their own part. Really good that you’re using your wordcraft to be the bastion of normalization for anyone who thinks artists complain too much.
