#CARATREVIVAL24 ❤️‍🔥 JAN 14 — FEB 14 Welcome to 2024, with a new set of prompts and challenges for Carats on Tumblr that should hopefully (🤞) be fun to create new content for! There are five segments, ending in a surprise gift session!
Any content is welcomed, providing that revolves around the prompts and that it follows the rules of the network: including not posting any stolen content nor any NSFW works! We're happy to see gifsets, SFW writing, moodboards, art and more! Here are the five segments below:
PART 1: PICKING FAVOURITES & FIGHTS ↳ Runs from January 14 to January 21! Create content that revolves around your bias/es in Seventeen, OR a flipped prompt about which member/s you could take in a fight ⚔️
PART 2: BLAST TO THE PAST ↳ Runs from January 22 to January 28! Create content that takes us back to your favourite era, or your favourite lyrics from Seventeen songs that have stuck with you 🎵
PART 3: IN THE ARENA ↳ Runs from January 29 to February 4! Create content that highlights the duo of members that you would pair up with to win The Hunger Games, or drop the violence and trickery to simply showcase your favourite live performance (including fanmeetings, concerts, and award shows) 🏆
PART 4: ALTERNATE UNIVERSE ↳ Runs from February 5 to February 11! Create content where you place Seventeen in another world (whether it's fictional or not, or in your favourite movie or book!) Here's a sample gifset idea! 👑
PART 5: LOVE AND LETTER ↳ Runs from February 12 to February 14! Our final prompt fittingly ends on Carat Day and Valentine's Day and here you can post a surprise gift for any other creator or blog! 💞
RULES 🗒️
Create and post SFW content that revolve around the respective prompts!
Reblog this post and follow @svtsource 💌 This event is about bringing together more CARATs <3
Caption your post with @svtsource carat revival '24: [chosen prompt]
Tag your creations with #caratrevival24 so we can find your work and reblog it to the network!
If you have any questions, feel free to send us an ask and we'll answer it as quickly as we can! Most importantly, we hope that you enjoy this event and creating for it ❤️

DAY 5849
Hyd,Koh Feb 22, 2024 Thu 9:25 PM
🪔 ,
February 23 .. birthday greetings to Ef Girish Badave .. and Ef Swati Seth ..
💐 .. wedding anniversary greetings to Ef Ashesh Dave and his respected wife Bhumika .. for February 23 .. 🙏🏻❤️💐
💐 .. wedding anniversary greetings to Ef Amit Fuhaar & his respected wife Sarita .. for February 21 .. 🙏🏻❤️💐
..
Birthday - Yash Goveas Friday, 23 February .. wishes and the wellness for this day .. Love from the Ef brigade 🌹
( IS THIS DATE 👆🏼 CORRECT OR IS IT JANUARY 30TH ) .. please clarify
A day of work endeth and another day of work stares within .. how to approach it, what would be the right give , how can it be bettered .. and such be the many that arise before the day ends ..
It is and has been the challenge or the fear of creative expectation - if it can be called that .. and that be the driving force for the professional .. will it wont it .. and what next .. complete one and the immediate mind think is , what of the next and whether it shall succumb or survive .. works at times , and not most of the time ..
Leave it to fate they say .. whoever 'they' be .. then it is proclaimed fate be made , not written on some divine blessing .. leaving it to fate and not in endeavour shall ever end in .. no play ..
And thus does the dilemma continue ..
What be in hand to be in judicious usage .. if addition comes good .. if not it was never fated , or desired , or expected .. so say the purists of proclamation ..
Many though work in defiance of the mode, and succeed .. they be blessed .. but endeavour never be ignored .. it does register ..
I endeavour with hope and strength of fulfillment - fulfillment within - all else is peripheral ..
'Success comes to those who dare and act' ..
the words ingrained within .. words written in my autograph book, in my very young days by the great legendary poet , Ram Dhari Singh 'Dinkar' .. his writing his presentation his voice reverberating in volume .. filled with the passion of life and living ...
Many misinterpreted the 'act' word to be in connection with an actor on stage or film .. NO .. 'act' is the act of action, perseverance, tenacity and determination .. when you 'dare' to bring tenacity in your thought word and deed .. then does success embrace you ..
Love and wellness ever ❤️

FFVII Rare Pair Week 2024
Tumblr media
Urban Dictionary defines rarepair as “A ship or pairing that not many people ship or is very rare to find fanfiction and fanart of. Typically happens within small fandoms or with minor characters.” So what’s your favourite Final Fantasy VII related rare pair? Do you have more than one? Here’s a chance to showcase them and help them move up from being rare! Not all parts of the pairing have to be from FFVII, and you don’t have to do the same pairing or group for the whole week! ** Pairings can be romantic or platonic. ** Below we have a list of prompts for this year. Feel free to be as creative with those as you want to, and take your time working on your entries, but please don’t forget to post them on the right date if you can. (But remember, no matter how late it’s better than never!)
For this event we are using a category approach. You can use the category as a theme for your prompt and the listed items suggested ideas. If none of the prompts give you any ideas, don’t worry! You can create anything you like for the week, provided it involves a rare pair! The goal of the week is to celebrate and share our rare pairs more than to just follow a list. Be it art, writing, mood boards, or even fic recs, just spread the love!
Feb. 16 | Day 1. Weather. Sunshine. Rain. Storms. The weather can create a meaningful moment, or a huge inconvenience.
Feb. 17 | Day 2. Unexpected Challenges. How does your pairing deal with an unexpected challenge? (For example, they come back home from a trip to find the pipes have frozen and they have no running water. Is one of them using the last of the drinking water to save their dying house plants while the other is desperately melting snow to keep the humans alive?)
Feb. 18 | Day 3. Favourite Things. From favourite things about each other to favourite items of clothing stolen to wear around the house (much to the other’s chagrin), or favorite things to do for or with each other.
Feb. 19 | Day 4. Near Death Experiences. For the angst lovers, the whumpers, this could be a true near death experience. For the lighter side, it could be something much less serious but someone is clearly being dramatic for sympathy. 😀
Feb. 20 | Day 5. Free Day/Combo Day. Combo space to mix and match prompts from this year (or a previous year’s list) or go wherever your canoe takes you!
Feb. 21 | Day 6. Events. Holidays, celebrations, traditions. Whether it’s a joyful day like a birthday or one of mourning like a memorial, there are many days throughout the year that bring us together. What’s a day that’s important to your pairing, or a time that brought them together for something that isn’t part of their regular day to day?
Feb. 22 | Day 7. Stories. Stories play a big part in our lives. They inspire, they entertain, they teach. Is there a story that your characters hold dear, or that they recount often to friends (or their kids)? (Or is there a story about your rare pair that you want to recommend to others today?)
Need more inspiration? Our past prompt lists can be found below, and you’re welcome to use any of them!
2023 List | 2022 List | 2020 List | 2019 List | 2018 List
Also, mod Asylos is taking requests for things to write again this year. That’s right, you can get something written for your rare pair, and not just do all the heavy lifting yourself. Send in your requests as an ask any time now up until the end of the event week.
Please remember to include the week’s tag (ffviirarepairweek) within the first 5 tags or else we might be unable to find your work! We will NOT accept/reblog anything containing Character/Ship Hate, so avoid including those in your entries. Also don’t repost anyone else’s work as your own! You are welcome to reblog other’s posts, but credit where credit is due.
You can submit your works on AO3 to the event collection at https://archiveofourown.org/collections/FFVIIrarepairweek
And if you have any questions, don’t be afraid of sending in an ask.
We hope it turns out to be a fun event for everyone!

I was chatting about how there were suddenly so many iteration ships this season that seemed like they had a lot of potential and somebody did the math and realized we had, approximately enough potential Mike/Mike ships to make this happen and thus this idea was formed.

Welcome to the 52drabbles prompt list for 2024 —which, amusingly, has 53 prompts! (Thank you Leap Year!)
The goal behind this year-long opt-in challenge is to post a drabble every week. To be actively writing, and actively posting, all year.
To that end we've built a list of prompts for each week in 2024 —plus a handful of alternative prompts that can be subbed in for any week (or used as prompts for bonus drabbles, because MOAR drabbles is always good!) The prompts include images, songs, random words or phrases, tropes, and in April, for poetry month - poems.
If the prompt is in double quotes, the prompt must appear in the drabble, otherwise it's meant as inspiration. During April you can choose to write a poem of the type specified as your prompt, or write *about* that type of poem. For song prompts, pick out a lyric if you like, or be inspired by the vibe of the song. Whatever works!
Also included is a list of lengths - you may choose any length from the list to pair with any of the weekly prompts.
Although the challenge is to write a drabble a week, it's a completely voluntary, opt-in sort of challenge. No hard and fast deadlines, no turning them in - just write and post. If you're posting on tumblr, please tag them with @52drabbles so we can find them for monthly roundup posts!
All versions of Bond and all ships are welcome. And if you're not in the Bond fandom? Yeah, you can play, too :)
Pick one of the following lengths each week for your drabbles:

Part of what makes Russia’s war on Ukraine such a world-changing event is that it’s not just about the latter’s survival as a state. The war has also cast a spotlight on the future of Russia itself. Will it ever settle in its borders? Will the Kremlin turn its stated aims into action and try to restore its Cold War-era empire beyond Ukraine? What happens if Russia loses the war?
That nuclear-armed Russia is not as stable as its leaders would have us believe became obvious last June, when Wagner Group head Yevgeny Prigozhin launched an armed rebellion that brought his mercenaries almost to the gates of Moscow. The most significant challenge to Russian President Vladimir Putin since he took power in 2000 ended in Prigozhin’s fiery death and a further crackdown on the regime’s critics.
Since then, Putin has hunkered down for a long war. With some 20,000 Russians arrested for anti-war infractions since 2022, dissent has been smashed. A staged election planned for 2024 will extend Putin’s rule for another six years; all serious challengers have been murdered, jailed, or pushed into exile. The Russian economy has been thoroughly retooled for war.
But whether the gamble Putin took on Feb. 24, 2022, will pay off is still unclear. If he wins in Ukraine, Europe could face other wars as Putin seeks to restore what he believes to be Russia’s rightful sphere of control in Eastern and Central Europe. If he loses, Russia might enter a spiral of instability at home. At Foreign Policy, we asked our best authors to spin some of these scenarios forward. Here are some of their most noteworthy articles from 2023.
1. The Dream of a European Security Order With Russia Is Dead
By Kristi Raik, Oct. 31
How will a future Russia fit into the European security order? France, Germany, and other European states long tried to partner with the Kremlin and grow economic ties. That vision crashed and burned with Russia’s invasion, leaving Europe to struggle for an alternative.
2. Why Putin Will Never Agree to De-Escalate
By Maxim Samorukov, June 13
Putin has everything to gain domestically by keeping his country on a war footing, Maxim Samorukov writes. That is one of many reasons why Moscow has no interest in negotiating an end to its brutal war in Ukraine.
3. Staring Down the Black Hole of Russia’s Future
By Anastasia Edel, March 10
“Increasingly lawless, economically doomed, and morally bankrupt, Russia is running out of good endings,” writes Anastasia Edel, who grew up in the Soviet Union and is no longer optimistic that Russia can take a turn for the better. She argues that only a clear defeat by Ukraine offers Russians the prospect of positive change after centuries of imperialism.
4. It’s High Time to Prepare for Russia’s Collapse
By Alexander J. Motyl, Jan. 7
In one of Foreign Policy’s most-read articles in 2023, Alexander J. Motyl examines scenarios for a breakup of the Russian Federation, which still contains dozens of colonized non-Russian peoples. Whatever its likelihood in the years ahead, not planning for such a disintegration betrays a dangerous lack of imagination among Western policymakers, Motyl writes.
5. Russia’s Frighteningly Fascist Youth
By Ian Garner, May 21
In an excerpt from his book, Z Generation: Into the Heart of Russia’s Fascist Youth, Ian Garner describes a new generation of Russians that glorifies war, death, and Putin—a creed that embodies the darkest elements of 20th-century fascism.

I jumped on a bandwagon...
I actually bought Cain's Jawbone like last year and was too intimidated to even look at it but then i found out Harper Collins was running a competition in Australia so in the first week of January I decided to actually give it a crack.
It took me basically the entire month, a lot of rereading pages and googling poetry references and muttering to myself about Henrys, but I think I finally understand the story. It was incredibly confusing and very challenging but once I was in it, it always felt possible and it was a lot of fun figuring it out. Even if I felt like I was losing my mind at times. And yes, I did submit my final answer before the comp closed on Jan 31 but, as of Feb 21, haven't heard back lmao so I have to assume I got the page order wrong somewhere.
Anyway, there were a couple of genuinely funny moments in the story and it's undeniably clever. Like, I can't even begin to imagine how you'd go about writing it, but it was a lot of fun to try and solve!

and fic writing questions! a) are there any motifs you're proud of/happy about/excited about in noble pining atm (like, could be mirrors or swords or vines or objects like that, or something more nebulous, like repeated dialogue or scene descriptors, etc.) and b) what's a challenge or problem you've had a fun time solving while drafting it, or that you're really proud of finding ways to handle? <3
a) so like. I realized far too late into the process of writing noble pining, after I'd realized how horrifyingly Long it was going to be, that I hadn't really anticipated or intentionally put any themes or motifs into it at that point? so as an insane person. I decided on a few themes I wanted to be intentional about that I thought were already present in the text, and like copy pasted relevant quotes I'd already written into a Google doc so I could keep track of them skfjbnskfjbn they kind of intersect, unsurprisingly, and its one of the points on my docket for editing to like. workshop integration and progress of the themes over the course of the story!!!
as for motifs uhhh. I don't really think so ?? not intentionally, anyway, like we could ask my betas uwu and bev if they've noticed any recurring themes or imagery or etc in their readings thus far but uhhh. no. this started as a silly goofy quick idea and then by the time I realized it was going to be the size and scope it was turning into, I had bigger problems ahead of me (like plot) to worry about, so stuff like motifs kind of got shoved by the wayside <//3 (maybe there are unintentional sav-isms?? probably. I'm sure I have common dialogue/scene/setting descriptors and tells that I'm unaware of that are all over this thing sfkjbnsfb)
b) ummm. so disclaimer I finished the first draft of np back in Feb (!! 25 chap 150k!!) and sent it off for beta'ing by the end of that month/beginning of march and um. haven't touched it since? not that I haven't gotten what I'm sure is lovely valuable feedback from my beloved treasured betas I just. haven't had the inclination or the spoons to start editing or working on the second draft of it. YET! I will. eventually. at some point I'll buck up and start on it, which will be the hardest part skfjbnskfjbnsf. so like. there isn't really anything Ive done Yet to be proud of, given that I haven't started editing actually, but I am proud of myself for like. figuring out the plot of it all?? I feel pretty damn good about the beats of the whole thing, which as someone who has NEVER even attempted writing anything this long or involved before was like. a huge impressive step for me! the other longest thing I've written was my d20 big bang fic from back in '21 and like. that was little more than 20k iirc?? and I got so stuck on trying to figure out the plot I wanted or how to make it work that I like. ended the fic BEFORE the plot climax so I didn't have to figure it out. so like. coming up with what I think is a pretty good plot arc and character arcs and individual and group beats and some politics in there and etc etc etc for this au. I'm proud of that <3 I hope when I read my feedback my betas will tell me that it works and that it isn't awful and bad. skfjbnskfjbnskfnj <333

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Tagged by both @mihrsuri and @unseenacademic 💜💜💜 Thank you so much! I actually wrote up most of the answers the day I was tagged, and then forgot to post them. For over 10 days, probably. Me bad.
1. How many works do you have on Ao3? 23! (One of them is a 'collection' of short ficlets, and has 6 chapters. So 28 stories in 23 works so far. Probably about to be more stories in still 23 works.)
2. What's your total Ao3 word count? 156,597 words. For now.
3. What fandoms do you write for? Currently? Just TWW. Who knows in the future!
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
They have about 35% of my total kudos, but the first two are ~21% alone. (The first one is the only fic that has over 100 kudos. Then again, any of them getting above 30 is a miracle.)
maybe everything's just turning out how it should be (Big Block of Cheese 2008; CJ & Josh. Posted Feb 2021) [121]
say it's here where our pieces fall in place (Vignettes, 1998-2008. Posted Jan 2022.) [66]
just your smile lit a sixty-watt bulb in my house that was darkened for days (Thanksgiving 2006. Posted Dec 2022.) [55]
nobody knows how to get back home (Missing scene from ITSOTG. Posted April 2023) (wait what. top 4?!) [50]
we could be the way forward and I know I'll pay for it (B4A Campaign Fic, spring 1998. Posted May 2021) [47]
5. Do you respond to comments?
YES. I don't take them for granted, and I like interacting with my readers. Sharing is nerve-wracking and makes me feel so exposed, so any comment makes it worth it. I like to thank peeps for their time! As of late, it's taking me weeks to get back to comments for Brain/spoons reasons (and because I try to do so in order, though not always). I sometimes feel bad I have fallen behind on leaving my own comments, so replying to what I get makes me feel bad. I love getting the rare, long, thoughtful comments, because I love seeing what people pick up on (had to restrain myself from commenting on everything), so if that one's up next… It'll delay everything. I have a harder time letting go of those.
I know replying or not is a hot topic, and I fall on the side of 'whatever the author does is fine' (I see them as being voluntary gifts to the author, kinda, but I understand why some authors can't or won't reply! Especially those who get dozens.). It does feel weird(ly demoralizing) when you see that yours is one of a couple of comments they haven't replied to, though. (Selfishly, as someone who tries to write medium-long comments, lack of anything can sting. It's irrational, it's not what I'm after, but it'd be nice to know whether that hour plus of my time was worth it. It's not transactional and I hate that c4c idea or whatever. Just. weird feelings.)
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
As we've established in previous similar memes (lol, I think I've answered these questions before), my fics don't really have angsty endings! For the most part. I think I said don't want you to go but I'll be okay then, and I can still buy that/definitely popped into my brain. I think some of my late S7 fics have an ominous feel to them, with some references/buildup to the angsty parts of IM, but I wouldn't call them angsty endings.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Um. The opposite is true! still you never took your hand from mine was my first thought, but I feel like oh, and I will be with you to feel the California sun is pretty darn happy. I could have picked almost any of them and I could make a case for them!
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I luckily do not. I have gotten a couple of comments that have messed with my brain, and made me second-guess things, but they were not hate.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Yes, but not regularly and not that well. It's usually short, mild scenes at most, but I did challenge myself to write a more explicit one last summer, especially after I got those 'one bed' tropes in the Wheel but didn't go there in the 500-word limit. Streets say it's hot. IDK. I also wrote a smutty continuation to the exchange fic. Best if we forget parts of that one happened. I also started writing one that would be in my S5 pregnancy universe but 🤐
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
I don't. But this question confirms to me I have answered this before because I know I've joked about how TV has already done that for me, lmao. See: Bones/Sleepy Hollow.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? (I had to track down this question because it wasn't anywhere.) I don't think so!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope! I'm having déjà vu here. I know I have answered this before: I could do it myself! But I have a feeling it wouldn't be as easy as one might think, but I'd be honored.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I don't think so…? If I have, it was years ago, in my forum/LJ days. I've been trying to make it happen for a while now, but who knows if it'll ever happen. WE HAVE IDEAS. We want to make it happen. (Wink wink, nudge nudge. You know who.)
14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
Spaceships are so cool. Atlantis was the first space shuttle I saw in person (and also the one I've seen the most) and it and its exhibit are awesome. I'm only missing Discovery out of the four space shuttles, because I didn't go to the second National Air and Space Museum location in Virginia back in 2015. And once the new exhibit center is completed, I'd love to see Endeavour again.
(In all seriousness, I don't have one. Booth and Brennan will forever and always hold a special place in my heart, but I love CJ and Danny so much, writing for them, their journey. Pls don't make me pick.)
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I am a big 'never say never' person, because I end up picking stuff up (and maybe rewriting it to fit my current style/ability) if I remember an idea… But I'm guessing many of them won't get finished. Probably some of those that are deep in my notes app or on the drive.
16. What are your writing strengths? I (try to) dig into the emotion of a scene as best as I can.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Everything else? I know it sounds like an excuse (at least to my ears), but writing in your second language is hard. I know my writing sounds limited because of it – my descriptions will never be as evocative as I wish they were, my dialogue won't be there. I am not the most imaginative person, either.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
If it makes sense, and won't take the reader out of the story, go for it! (A few words, or a line or two, might work if there's appropriate context.)
But also, as a non-native speaker, I'll always recommend using pals who might be fluent in that language and checking with them! I know that, throughout my many years in fandom, I've read quick things in Spanish within English fics that weren't entirely correct in the context they were being used (i.e. character's fluency, smaller details), and they took me out for a second. (I know, I know – pot, meet kettle. If anyone has read an unedited story of mine, they've found me making up English phrases.)
19. First fandom you wrote for? Bones. In Spanish. (I also think I wrote some ficlets in English that are probably hidden in some random LJ comm I created for my writing. They're probably 14-15 years old.)
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
I honestly cannot pick! And maybe it's yet to come. But basically, if I've gone through the embarrassment of having someone edit/beta a fic and catch all the avoidable mistakes, it's because it genuinely has something I like about it and that I think others will like, too. (Perceived quality aside.)
Off the top of my head, and out of the posted fics (obvious recency bias, sorry). I have a story for all 23… Also, let's consider I've mostly not read them since they were posted so I might be off. (Would love to hear what everyone's favorite is, if you've read any and are reading this!) Obviously, that top 5 by kudos has great ones. There's a reason
don't want you to go but I'll be okay: I just remember finishing it and knowing it was something special. Felt like many things coming together. I wanted to write angstier, a break from the endgame of the IM AU I've yet to post, and I think it works. I had had that quote as inspo for a while, and I think the trip to Berlin put it back on my mind. (The first haunted by the notion draft is from around this time, too!)
your love is a secret I'm hoping, dreaming, dying to keep: the structure is likely a tad repetitive, maybe (but also, the point of 3+1s, sort of?) but I love writing in that s7 period, and there should be more fic with the press corps. I think the stuff I wrote while editing (which included an overhaul of the +1) is even better than what was there.
oh, and I will be with you to feel the California sun: recency bias, yes. I love a good early Cali story, and even if this was nowhere the story I sat down to write originally, I love how it turned out. It's silly but fun, and so sunny.
still you never took your hand from mine: I will always have all the soft spots for my memoir stories, even if two of them have yet to be posted. This one doubled its size a year and a half after “finishing” it because I realized what it was missing. It's sappy, probably unrealistic re: the publishing industry, but damn it if it's not one of those that have made me cry while editing them.
we could be the way forward and I know I'll pay for it: I had to include an oldie but goodie from my first year, and this one is so special to me. (Along with BBC 2008, which I also absolutely adore. That was the fic I always wanted to post. Hilarious it was third. But it's also my most popular fic by a huge margin.) Seeing it recommended on Tumblr? God. I love campaign stories and all their potential. I love that I took a random line from some unposted story and it evolved into this fic.
nobody knows how to get back home: I almost added the most recent one because of how fun it was to write (or, as I mentioned above, Big Block of Cheese) but I like how bittersweet this missing scene one is. I find CJ's internal struggle so interesting to explore, and this is one of her most vulnerable moments. I also wanted to see a hug so badly.

Deathly Weapons Writing Roundup 2022
Tumblr media
Total Wordcount: 83,458 Published Chapters: 19/45
New Chapters Released This Year
Ch19: Chapter 18: Black Gold
MISSION 1 High seas and high stakes!  Learning to work with a new Teammate always comes with challenges, but when eco-terrorists commandeer a deep-water oil rig, the pressure has never been greater.  With lives on the line and fingers twitching on triggers, will Phantom’s powers let them swim… or sink?
Wordcount: 21,176 Release Date: 25 Feb 2022 Concept Art Piece
Sure feels like a decade has passed between then and now but nope, this was only published in February. In which I kick off Act II proper by adding 25% to the total length of the story!
I’m really proud of how this one came out.  Black Gold is the first of a series of planned mission-episode chapters with semi-self-contained A-plots that feed into the larger Arc Plot of Act II.  We’ve got some brand new antagonists inspired by characters from the wider DC Comics catalogue, in an entirely original story.  With this one I tried hard to mimic the feel of a YJS1 TV-mission, and based on the comments it seems I swung pretty close to the mark.  I didn’t talk about it in the chapter notes, but I also sought out some sensitivity-writing advice for this one, as well as having a friend sens’-read a few key scenes, and I think it resulted in overall better handling of the civilian OCs.  It might have taken a while to put together it’s almost the size of a Deltora Quest book all on its own but I think the result was worth the wait.
(Fun fact: Act II is deliberately structured to emulate a TV episode experience so if I do it right you should be able to pick up any given mission-block and enjoy the A-plot as a standalone story.  Black Gold wouldn’t be a bad jumping on point if you wanted to try Deathly Weapons out without committing to the full 83K read.)
Roundup of other 2022 development for this story under the cut:
Overall Structure
Structure has now been fleshed out enough for me to formalise the breakdown of chapters. I also decided to write episode teasers for each mission-block, which you can find here.  Currently looking like it’ll be 45 chapters in total, but that may expand to 46 if Mission 9 turns out to need a 2-parter.
Former Mission 5 (Enemy Lines) and Mission 6 (In the Mists) have had their places swapped. In the Mists was a bit of a floating mission structurally, and it turned out to work better when placed before the China and Emeralds interlude.  Meanwhile, the character-chapter following Enemy Lines felt better once placed later.
Our much neglected but no less beloved sorceress Zatanna now has a mini character arc about ghost-magic, starting at Mission 3 and cropping up as a background thread throughout later chapters.  As a side bonus, it comes with some fun meta-implications for my headcanons about Nabu and Clockwork being petty work-rivals.
The memento-shelf has now become a recurring motif in Danny’s character journey.
A set of “story bible” documents have been fleshed out with more detailed character profiles, plot summaries and the overall scheme of the villains.
Act II: Mission 2
Drafted the first scenes for Chapter 19: Flashpoints.
The three key OCs for Chapter 19 have been developed.  The police officer has been swapped out for an investigative journalist.  The other two were somewhat less-anticipated additions but I quite like them in a spiteful sort of way.
Artemis’ chapter 19 scene now gets more in-depth character focus.
Chapter 20 remains already in detailed outline.
Chapter 21 is now in full detailed outline, with 2 scenes in rough draft since 2021.
Act II: Mission 3
Opening outline has seen more development, feat. cameo appearance from Detective Montoya.
Zatanna now gets a character-focus thread to do with expectations and her growth as a sorceress.
The Arc-clue and the souvenirs have been adjusted.  Zatanna now also gets to take something home.
Act II: Mission 4
More development to the opening scene.  Artemis now reads a thematically-relevant part of Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There rather than a generic magazine.
Added a continuation to Zatanna’s arc.  She gets to take home another souvenir.
The Kaldur-centric post-mission chapter (Il-Lit Ships) has seen more outline development.
The Sam-centric post-mission chapter (Withered Red Rose) has also seen more detailed outline development.
Act II: Mission 5
This is now In the Mists.
Conner now has a detailed character thread providing emotional beats.  Galagos, Gorillas and making fun of the Team’s mentors ensue.
Interlude: China and Emeralds
Added more details to the opening scene, feat. gymnastic calisthenics.
Conner and Superman now have a scene together.
Act II: Mission 6
This is now Enemy Lines.
The M’gann-focussed post-mission chapter (Humans) is now in full detailed outline.  Accompanying Meta on Martian Bigotry in the DW!verse was written up to better underpin the discussion of her experiences.
Act II: Mission 7
Added more detail to the post-mission reveal discussion, particularly Phantom and M’gann’s similar experiences.
Act III: Mission 9
Structural outline for the mission-chapter and character interactions have been developed in more detail.
Zatanna’s arc about ghost-magic continues.
The first of two Conner-centric post mission chapters (Alliances) is now in full detailed outline.
Act III: Mission 11
Detail development for the post-mission character-centric chapters, including Dick, Danny, Bruce and the Team.
Development of detailed outlines for the first of three epilogue scenes.
Other stuff
Art things: Deathly Weapons now has a new Banner-Style Fic Cover and Book-Style Fic Cover
Community: There is now a DW Discord.
Lovely gifts: I’ve said it before and I shall say it once more: endless thanks to the inimitable @doodly-doop for their wonderful gift art of Wally’s wall-slam manoeuvre from Chapter 18  and @cryxdraws for their art of Danny’s upgraded costume from Chapter 16.
And of course, thanks to you (whoever, wherever and whenever you may be) for joining me on this ride.
Here’s to a productive 2023.

“Craig of the Creek”: An Exciting Adventure for All Ages
Tumblr media
Craig of the Creek follows Craig and his two friends, Kelsey and JP, who explore the creek near the fictional suburban town of Herkelton, Maryland. They face family conflict, snobs, witches, and other challenges along the way.
Reprinted from The Geekiary, my History Hermann WordPress blog o Feb. 9, 2023, and Wayback Machine. This was the forty-seventh article I wrote for The Geekiary. This post was originally published on July 21, 2022.
Craig of the Creek is an animated slice-of-life adventure-comedy series created by Matt Burnett and Ben Levin, who previously worked on Steven Universe. With the pilot debuting in December 2017, the series has run for four seasons and over 140 episodes. The season 4 finale aired on July 15, 2022.
As a warning, this recommendation discusses some spoilers for the first four seasons of Craig of the Creek.
Tumblr media
Kelsey (left), Craig (middle), and JP (right)
Craig of the Creek centers around the adventures of a 10-year-old Black kid named Craig Williams (Philip Solomon) and his two friends, Kelsey Pokoly (Noël Wells) and John Paul "J.P." Mercer (Michael Croner). All three are the show's protagonists. Kelsey's animal companion, Mortimor, also has an important role.
As the opening theme states, the series is focused on mysteries, danger, and friends who are "always by your side". The theme asks who will be around to not "let you down" when you go on a "wild ride". It claims that Craig, the eponymous protagonist, will "save the day".
Other characters are introduced as the series moves forward. This includes Craig's family, such as his father, Duane (Terry Crews), mother Nicole (Kimberly Hébert Gregory), his 16-year-old brother, Bernard (Phil LaMarr), and younger sister, Jessica (Lucia Cunningham). Also appearing is his grandfather Earl (Phil Morris) and his grandmother Jojo (Saundra McClain).
There are many more characters that Craig, Kelsey, JP, and Mortimor come across in their adventures through the Creek. Since the series is aimed at children and families, it, predictably, has affirming messages. The family-oriented Common Sense Media described the series as filled with "creativity, joy, adventure, individuality, and self-discovery".
Unsurprisingly, that focus has garnered Craig of the Creek various award nominations since its premiere in March 2018. This has included an Annie Award, two Daytime Emmy Awards, an NAACP Image Award, and a GLAAD Media Award. In 2018, the entire series won the "Common Sense Seal, an award given by Common Sense Media for the "diversity of its characters and inclusion of minorities", meaning that the organization recommends the series for "children aged six and above."
This diversity is reinforced by the show's writing staff. In August 2021, Jeff Trammell, head writer for the series, stated that the series has a writing room full of people with "different backgrounds and different experiences". He said the room is open in such a way that "it never feels like you're the one representative", especially for people of color.
The series has garnered a broad fanbase since its debut, with hundreds of thousands of people watching each episode. This is reflected in the 120 fan fiction works on Archive of Our Own, 43 fan fiction offerings on FanFiction.Net, and over 15,000 followers of the crew's Twitter account.
Tumblr media
Bernard and his girlfriend, Alexis
Although the series is for all ages, it also focuses on adult issues, like breakups and pressures on young adults. At the same time, there is a focus on safety, family clashes, and interracial relationships. This includes the romance between Bernard and his girlfriend, Alexis (Karen Fukuhara).
The untamed wilderness, i.e. "Creek", in this critically acclaimed series is a place where rules of the outside world don't apply and where children rule over all. However, there are some older kids. Three teenagers who play card games in a cave are known as the "Elders" (Mark, Barry, and David). While the show's creators voice two of these characters, Zachary Steel voices David.
There are many subgroups in the Creek. This includes the Junior Forest Scouts, the Horse Girls, the 10 Speeds, the Tea Timers, the Witches of the Creek, the Ninja Kids, the Sewer Kids, and the Alliance of Science. There's also Cardboard City and the Creek's main market, the Trading Tree. Some kids don't easily fit into any of the aforementioned groups.
However, these groups are occasionally united together by Craig. He organized the Council of the Creek, based on what his grandmother Jojo does as a local politician. He, and his friends, meet at the Stump, which they have turned into a hideaway.
Unlike other series, the Creek kids are a diverse group. The series has been praised for "broadening the ethnic-racial representations in children’s media" along with Molly of Denali on PBS, Dora the Explorer on Nickelodeon, and Elena of Avalor on Disney. The latter ended in August 2020 when Disney canned the series after three seasons.
Diverse characters in Craig of the Creek include Cannonball (Trammell), a member of the Ten Speeds, a group of kids who love riding mountain bikes. Then there's Carter Brown (Zeno Robinson), a kid obsessed with building cardboard contraptions. My favorites include Wren (Ashleigh Crystal Hairston), a nerdy girl who conducts wild experiments, and Kitherine "Kit" (Davis) who runs the Trading Tree.
This racial diversity is no accident. Black storyboarders and writers make sure the show "strikes the right cords". Characters like Craig's father were composites of Trammell and Tiffany Ford's fathers. Lamar Abrams created Craig's grandmother.
Levin and Burnett said that they wanted to have a "positive impact" with a show that is fun for kids and reflects diversity from the actual world. They argued that the show combines the experiences of the show's crew.
The show taps into, as some critics described it, the "adventurous side of Cartoon Network’s viewers". Plots are a combination of the character's real-life experiences and their vivid imaginations.
Tumblr media
13 characters in the series stated as LGBTQ in Insider's LGBTQ characters and cartoons database
LGBTQ+ representation shines through in Craig of the Creek. The Insider database of LGBTQ cartoon characters lists 13 characters for the series. Some of these characters only appear occasionally. Others are more prominent.
This representation is genuine. For instance, Angel José, a 10-year-old that runs the Creek Daycare, is non-binary, agender, and uses they/them pronouns. For much of the series, non-binary storyboarder and writer Angel Lorenzana voices them.
In the show's fourth season, Ben J. Pierce, a non-binary actor, voices Angel. Laura Mercer, the older sister of JP, is a lesbian and in a relationship with another girl, Kat. Fortune Feimster, a lesbian comedian, voices her.
There are other lesbian characters in the series. Tabitha and Courtney masquerade as "witches of the creek". In the episode "The Haunted Dollhouse" they kiss. In others, they hold hands or hang out together.
Craig of the Creek also has implied queer characters. This includes Jasmine Williams (Tawny Newsome), daughter of Darnell and Kim, and Craig's cousin. In the episode "Cousin of the Creek", she tells her cousin that she is texting her girlfriend.
It is implied that Pullstring and Merkid are non-binary. Some reviewers compared the number of non-binary characters in the series to Steven Universe, where every Gem is non-binary.
In the episode "Silver Fist Returns", Ben (Cole Escola), the "Secret Kid", keeper of Creek kids' secrets, reveals his crush on George (M. Michael Croner), a member of the Tea Timers. George reciprocates Ben's romantic feelings. Ben is also gender non-conforming.
Kelsey is a queer series protagonist. In the episode "Fire and Ice", she confesses her love for Isabella "Stacks" Alvarado (Montse Hernandez), a Latine bibliophile who hangs out in the library. While it was implied that both had feelings before that episode, they become a couple in the episode after Stacks admits her feelings for Kelsey during a secret book club.
Kelsey seems to have a crush on Vanessa "Wildernessa" (Izabella Alvarez), a girl who roams across the Creek on a huge Tibetan Mastiff named Cheesesticks. However, Vanessa does not have the same feelings toward Kelsey. Instead, she has a crush on Craig.
Queer show writers such as Kate Leth and voice actors like Stephanie Allynne (voiced Marie) buttress this representation. The Creek is a place you can be free to be yourself, as a recent Cartoon Network tweet stated. Lorenzana's art accompanied the message.
Tumblr media
Craig challenges King Xavier in the series Season 3 finale
Craig of the Creek goes further, with a clash between good and evil. King Xavier (Charles DeWayne) rules the other side of the Creek, known as Herkleston Mills, with an iron fist. He inherited the title from his older sister Cheyenne (Najja Porter). Previously, Kenneth (Lamar Abrams) ruled over Herkleston Mills as the first king, after a highway overpass divided the Creek.
Xavier's right-hand woman is Maya (Sydney Mikayla). She helps preserve Xavier's hierarchy. Others assist the King as well. This includes a fast-runner, Keun Sup /"The Blur" (SungWon Cho), Jackie / "The Arm" who is deaf and uses ASL, and Aggie / "The Squashinator" (Zahra Fazal).
Some are disaffected by Xavier's rule. This includes Raj (Parvesh Cheena) and Shawn (Croner) who are the Honeysuckle Rangers. Both are from a nearby neighborhood and have feelings for each other. Cheena is also a gay actor.
Raj and Cheena become allies of Craig. The Green Poncho, otherwise known as Omar (Robinson), becomes Craig's ally. He tries to protect Craig's side of the Creek from Xavier, and his domination, by standing guard at the overpass.
This all changes after Xavier takes photographs of Craig's map. He plots to take over Craig's side of the Creek. The final five episodes of Craig of the Creek's third season are a showdown between the King, his lackeys, and other Creek Kids.
At first, Xavier engineers a crisis to take control of Craig's side of the Creek. He takes over the Trading Tree, bans games, destroys skate ramps, and tempts kids to support him with candy.
It seems he has won, at first. He even screws with the magical girl-esque Sparkle Cadet (Kamali Minter). He even manipulates a situation that forces Craig to leave the Creek and return home. But, this is short-lived.
youtube
A high-stakes winner-take-all game of Capture the Flag begins. At the last second, Craig is victorious. Xavier loses his power. Craig declares that the Creek belongs to everyone. He says there is no need for a King and states that there is a whole other side of the Creek to explore.
This clash reminds me of the final four episodes of Steven Universe, which concluded that series. Considering that Steven Universe writers created the series and easter eggs to that show are present throughout Craig of the Creek, this may not be a coincidence.
The show's fourth season picks up where the third season left off. Craig, and his friends deal with the aftermath of Xavier's defeat. It somewhat echoes Steven Universe Future, where Steven dealt with the consequences of his victory over the Diamond Authority.
Omar, formerly the Green Poncho, becomes one of the stump kids. Craig tries to find his place in the Creek. Those from the "other side" of the Creek have more opportunities available to them as they are not hemmed in by Xavier.
These changes accompany continued diverse stories and characters. This includes a focus on the Filipino family of Sewer Queen, Latine mythologies told by Stacks in the library or Raj's Indian family.
In one episode, a Black woman, Maya, reconnects with Craig. She gives him advice, telling him that he should be himself, and not agree with what anyone else believes. In another, Craig bonds again with Sparkle Cadet.
Tumblr media
Craig and animesque magical girl, Sparkle Cadet, in episode "The Sparkle Solution"
Craig of the Creek continues to have institutional support from Cartoon Network executives. The series has been renewed for a fifth season and an original movie. In February 2021, Jessica's Big World, a preschool spinoff series for Cartoonito, began production. While it is not known when the spinoff will premiere, the fifth season of Craig of the Creek will begin in 2023.
This means that this show will continue. This is a positive. It will be a boon for cultural diversity, LGBTQ+ representation, and inclusion in animation. It joins other series such as the Proud Family revival series, Amphibia, and The Owl House, all with similar themes.
While the music of the series is nice, as are rap beats by MC Deltron (Teren Delvon Jones). I stayed with the series thanks to its voice actors, animation, and story, more than anything else. The often fourth-wall breaks also made the series enjoyable.
I recognized some of the voice actors from elsewhere. This includes Gunnar Sizemore, Kari Wahlgren, Michaela Dietz, and Deedee Magno.
However, the number of episodes (145) and seasons is a major stumbling block. It is a huge time commitment, which wears you down by the end, even if watched over a long period of time. It is not a series that is easy to binge over one weekend. So, prepare yourself.
The series felt strange to me because it mainly appeals to kids. From early on in the series, I realized that I wasn't the intended audience. A series where the characters are young adults would be more my speed than this series.
Despite these criticisms, I would still recommend Craig of the Creek due to its characters, plotlines, and themes. After watching all the episodes, I came to realize why it is such a wonderful show. The fifth season will likely continue in the same manner. Xavier may make a reappearance in the upcoming season, although it remains unknown what role he would play.
For those interested, Craig of the Creek is currently airing on Cartoon Network and streaming on HBO Max. It is also available on Amazon Prime and other platforms.

Queliot & The Magicians Fic Reading Winter Challenge, part 6
Hey, all, I apologize for the delay, and for the write-ups being a little shorter. I'm under so many deadlines, but I've still been reading (and enjoying your work so much!!), and I'm going to do my best! I'm either gonna give you 50 recs by the end of Feb., or I'll extend again into March & add still more recs. Guess which is more likely XD. Also apologies--my brain is in art mode--I probably need a serious proofreader. Anyway, thank you so much for all your amazing and beautiful Queliot fanworks! That goes for everyone reading this! You keep my heart alive. Once again, the number is merely a count of how many fic I've shared with you, that I've read and commented on during this time period.
21. I adored this continuation of the Queliot pirate epic! This time with a new look at Eliot's family and continuing the really great worldbuilding, pirate/sea vibes, and beautiful connection between the characters. Truly epic! Complete with music! Thank you, @summerstede❤️
22. These are just so incredibly sweet and loving! Very cozy, too, if you need some divine Queliot comfort! As always, these have so many great details, they feel so real and are definitely healing. Thank you, @lizardkingeliot❤️
23. This fic has just so much love, so many thoughtful details, which are so touching and show how hard Eliot will work to make things special for Quentin. And Margo and Julia help, great relationships amongst them all! And some truly special and beautiful moments...please enjoy!!! Thank you, @allegria23❤️
Also, there's fanart to go with it! Which I love, love, love so much! Such a beautiful visualization of an important (and very sweet) scene. Please share the love with the artist, too! Thank you, @tah-fcking-dah ❤️
24. Wow oh wow, this is an amazing way to subvert things! Quentin as a Niffin! Eliot on a mission to save him! I don't want to give you any more spoilers, but it's just so well done, and makes so much more sense than what happened. Thank you, @wolfnprey ❤️
25. I love the Winter Olympics, and this is an incredibly realized and beautiful Queliot AU (Eliot as a skater makes perfect sense! The translation of their personalities into skating styles!). Love everything, including the rivals to lovers, the character development, all the social media interactions, the slow burn (that seahorse thing makes my heart hurt, so good). Thank you, @inmediasres-1 ❤️
26. This is a Queliot-Divergent crossover! It's so good! And it comes with beautiful art by the author. I love the new solutions to the harmonic convergence, how to show Q what Eliot fears, Alice as a Niffin (loved her haunting & research), also some great BFF moments for Q & Jules and El & Margo; and the Queliot is just great!!! Love it! Thank you, @cyprianlatewood ❤️

february goals weekly update
(i plan to make this a weekly sunday post!)
goal one: write -- even just a single word -- 21 days this month (for GYWO). 2/21
goal two: write 10,500 words (for miniwrimos's feb 23 miniwrimo). 1,147/10,500
goal three: fully outline TSBPS (for a discord challenge). it's definitely plodding along -- i've committed to a few details like setting, time, the religious backdrop i'll be using, and some key plot points. my plan for the coming week is to fully sketch out the scenes for act i.
it feels like a decent start to the month. i'm not sure if i've ever mentioned this on this account, but i have a few crafts -- including writing -- that i tend to go really, really hard on for a little while before switching gears. one of those is hand-sewing and that's what i've been doing most this week, tbh. i don't know why, but i decided it was a great idea to hand-sew a new bag instead of just buying a purse that actually fits everything i need to carry?? so that's been making me drag a bit, but i'm still fairly well on track.

Since I miserably fell out of the 21 day productivity challenge, I'm going to try my own thing to keep me from laying around aimlessly for this week ^^ once again am posting for a sense of accountability
Goals for the week:
1) Attend medical checkup (asap, important)
2)Prepare for craft activity I'm organising for volunteer work (before Saturday, important)
-gather necessary materials
-make prototypes
-prepare instruction sheets/videos if needed
3)Write for a literary magazine (deadline on 1 Feb, sacrifice if not enough time, especially since I have no good ideas relating to the theme)
Goals for today:
-fold rabbit origami
-read ikigai
-start prep for craft
Will update at the end of the day ^^ Currently 3pm so...I should be able to make it
