Maddening how DC largely ignores this entire era, never really collecting or reprinting any of it except for Death of Superman, which is far from the best story it produced. That and the Wedding seem to be the only bits of the Triangle era widely available, which is just crazy, but not all that surprising. DC has never been all that fussed about reprinting Superman stories from the silver, bonze and modern age, except for a select few.

Review: Iron Man Epic Collection 18: The Return of Tony Stark
Tumblr media
The first half is pretty great!
Carrying on in the proud tradition of the first volume of Len Kaminski's Iron Man run, The Return of Tony Stark is 50% well-written, regular series issues and 50% filler. Unlike the previous volume, however, the editors had the good sense to front-load this Epic.
Iron Man 18 begins right where the previous volume left off: with the reveal to James Rhodes that Tony Stark is back to life. From there, we see Tony dive right back into life as Iron Man. These issues are chalk full of pure 90's style bombastic action, including a two-part storyline where Iron Man battles Omega Red (one of the most quintessential 90's Marvel villains). Kevin Hopgood also returns as penciler, and his art was a big part of why these issues worked for me.
Tumblr media
The second half of The Return of Tony Stark is made up of Annual #14 and several Iron Man stories from Marvel Super-Heroes. Normally, the annuals from this period are awful, multi-part crossovers, but this is actually a stand-alone story that's pretty good! It helps that Kaminski also writes it, and that he makes use of the Masters of Silence from earlier in his run as well as Meredith McCall, one of Tony's girlfriends from the early 70's last seen in Iron Man #28! One of my frequent complaints about Annuals is that they often don't matter, because sales are usually lower and, I guess, the creators and editors are afraid of readers missing something important, but this storyline is a good example of how a writer can construct something that is both good and feels like it adds something to the lore by simply giving closure to a minor character whose story was never fully resolved.
Unfortunately, the Marvel Super-Heroes comics are a very, very mixed bag. The most notable is #8, which features the debut of Squirrel Girl and is plotted and drawn by Steve Ditko. To be honest, this is also the worst of the bunch. I haven't read many Squirrel Girl comics but in the few that I have, I found her incredibly grating, and this is no different. There's one or two decent other stories from the Marvel Super-Heroes issues, but mostly they're fairly bland.
Tumblr media
In a perfect world, the good halves of Iron Man Epics 17 & 18 would just be combined into a single great epic. That said, I want everything collected, and that just means that there will be some less-than-stellar material. Even with the weak second half, I do think that the regular series issues of Iron Man are good enough to justify buying The Return of Tony Stark.

“Well, what tongue does the wind talk? What nationality is a storm? What country do rains come from? What color is lightning? Where does thunder go when it dies?” (Ray Bradbury, Something Wicked This Way Comes).
Scott McCloud and Kurt Busiek were the direct inspiration for this; in the foreword of a black and white collection of Zot, McCloud talks about drawing a complex, hectic piece of crosssover fan fiction to “get it all out of his system” before he started doing more independent work. I read that foreword a couple years ago and that line stuck with me.

R.I.P CARLOS PACHECO
Tumblr media
What a crappy week this has been, and I’m not talking about the election results.
First I got news of Kevin O’Neill (Marshal Law, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) passing a few days ago.  Then I learned that Carlos Pacheco Perujo passed away this morning.
Tumblr media
Carlos Pacheco, a Spanish artist, spent a long time working on this side of the Atlantic for both Marvel Comics and DC Comics.
Tumblr media
Although he had been doing work for Marvel since 1995, the first book I remember seeing Pacheco’s work on was the 12-issue Avengers Forever.  I initially picked up the book because it was written by Kurt Busiek, who was doing a bang-up job with George Perez on Avengers at the time.  I liked the story, and was very impressed with the artwork.
This was also the first time that Pacheco worked with inker Jesus Merino and - like Kirby & Sinnott, Swan & Anderson, Adams & Giordano, and Byrne and Austin - it was a match made in Heaven.  Merino would continue to be Pacheco’s regular inker for many, many years afterward.
Tumblr media
Pacheco also had runs on Fantastic Four and X-Men.
Tumblr media
Of course, with me being a DC guy, I was very excited when PAcheco moved to DC tin 2003 to draw a 96-page JLA/JSA crossover, Virtue and Vice, wherein he depicted the entire roster of each team.
Tumblr media
Pacheco also drew covers for several issues of the JSA’s own book.
Tumblr media
He then teamed with writer Jeph Loeb for a few issues of Superman/Batman.
Tumblr media
Then he joined up again with Kurt Busiek for (most of) a year-long run on Superman.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Busiek and Pacheco teamed-up again for their creator-owned series Arrowsmith.
Tumblr media
Arrowsmith: Behind Enemy Lines, the second volume in the series, finished up earlier this year.  The trade paperback collecting the series was released in September, at around the same time that Pacheco announced he was retiring from comics due to being diagnosed with ALS.
Despite the dire news, I was hoping we’d have more time to spend with him. As is always the case with someone you love and admire, they always pass away far too soon.
Rest in peace, Carlos.

Hey. Amazon is having a Doctor Strange kindle sale and I'm getting the last few Epic Collections that I don't have. I'm excited to read the latest one that came out, that has the rest of Stephen's Strange Tales issues. I have a question about the one titled Afterlife, that collects Strange Tales (1994) #1, Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme #76-90, Ashcan Edition; Doctor Strange: What Is It That Disturbs You, Stephen?. What do you know about the stories from that time? Thanks for any help.
Hello!! I'm so glad you're getting more comics to add to your collection!
Let's see what I can tell about these stories without any spoilers, mmmm...
I think my favorite part of Strange Tales #1 is the team-up with Ben and Johnny. Ben has teamed up with Stephen before several times, they have a very interesting and amusing chemistry, but adding Johnny to the equation only makes it better. The art is also incredible (Kurt Busiek has this unique style).
Sorcerer Supreme is a roller coaster. You'll be getting the unpopular "no stache" look, the weird stories and the "back to the roots" storyline (which is cool but at the same time not so cool? Some weird things happen, but if you read Jed's recent stories, you'll pick some references!). I really really really love Stephen's last look (the white shirt with golden ornaments and the cloak turning into the red trench coat). Also the "are you gay?" panel, which is a classic haha. Overall, not my favorite, but definitely essential reading!
Doctor Strange: What Is It That Disturbs You, Stephen? is a one-shot that I also own in my native language. It's kinda predictable but goes to a very imaginative scenario of fantasy, which is always welcome.
In short, I do believe it's a nice collection of stories and you'll not be disappointed! Hope you have fun and I appreciate your trust in me to give some feedback 🙏🏻

This week Jam, Jeff, and JD read The Jellyfish by Boum. This BD fresh out of Montreal publisher Pow Pow follows Odette, a character whose vision is being increasingly obscured by a swarm of jellyfish. It’s a story with a lot of depth and heart, and some great cartooning. We’ll talk about the book, and about the bridge Pow Pow seems to be working to build between the Francophone and Anglo comics scenes.
Also mentioned in this episode: Boumeries and A Small Revolution, also by Boum Runaways by Brian Vaughan and Adrian Alphona X-Men by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby For Better Or For Worse by Lynn Johnston The Impending Blindness of Billie Scott by Zoe Thorogood Battle Angel Alita by Yukito Kishiro Failure to Launch: A Tour of Ill-Fated Futures edited by Kel McDonald Ranma 1/2 by Rumiko Takahashi My Ideas on Sauce by Carmen Zetsou The Simpsons created by Matt Groening Star Trek: The Next Generation created by Gene Roddenberry Skibidi Toilet by Alexey Gerasimov Pirates of the Caribbean directed by Gore Verbinski Jason Pargin Queer Eye for the Straight Guy created by David Collins and Michael Williams and cherry tomatoes

Books Read in 2024 #4 - “Astro City Metro Book 1” by Kurt Busiek, Brent Anderson & various
Tumblr media
If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to live in a world full of superheroes, then this is the book for you.
A wonderful collection that pays homage to all the traditional superhero storytelling tropes while also focusing on the human aspect, be it a slice of life man in the street story, or an in-depth examination of what it means to be a hero’s sidekick, or a superpowered child longing to just play games with kids her own age.
The grand spectacle of superpowered battles are there, but often just happening in the periphery rather than dominating the narrative.
Easily one of the most intelligent and engaging books that also happens to have people flying around wearing capes.

Marvel 1602 by Neil Gaiman
"But hope, like heroes, can prove hard to kill."
Marvel 1602 —Neil Gaiman's singular take on Marvel's legendary collection of superheroes—deftly delivers a story that subverts what readers know about these characters by transplanting them from present-day America to 1602 England. This process allows Gaiman to tap into the core of these characters—celebrating the universality of their core values and the timelessness of their most resonant themes—while telling an urgent, exciting and fresh story of persecution, rebellion and selfless heroism; the exact type of story we've come to expect from our Marvel heroes.
I enjoyed this one, but didn't love it. These versions of these characters are interesting, but never so much so that I was blown away. And while a lot of this has to do with the artwork and character design, most of it has to do with there just being too many characters involved for the story at hand. I had similar issues with Kurt Busiek's Marvels *, but they're more glaring in this story, and made a lot of the second act feel far too sluggish.
7/10
-Timothy Patrick Boyer.
*But to a much lesser extent than here, thanks to our perspective being on the outside looking in.

I just read the last issue of Kurt Busiek’s original run on the Thunderbolts collected in my omnibus edition yesterday, and its portrayal of Jolt, aka Hallie Takahama’s, backstory was genuinely tragic! During a psychiatric session with her fellow teammate Moonstone, Hallie reveals that the reason she’s been so adamant against returning to school per Hawkeye’s orders is because she’s been using her status as a superhero as a form of escapism. To try and run away from the painful memories of her former friends and family who were all killed during the Onslaught incident. These flashbacks also convey Hallie’s strong sense of altruism inspired by the superheroes she looks up to, as she took it upon herself to look after fellow orphans who similarly lost their parents during the disaster before they were later all kidnapped and experimented on by Arnim Zola (which consequently gave Hallie her electric & speed powers).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like… dang! Hallie is only 15-years-old and has endured so much pain & loss, yet she still perseveres and is quite easily the most mature & morally upstanding member of Thunderbolts (Hallie had the worst luck joining the superhero team who’s members were all secretly supervillains in disguise…)!
Oh, and my boy Ben Reilly even has a cameo from his brief tenure as Spider-Man during The Clone Saga in the Onslaught flashbacks! Joy!
From Thunderbolts (1997) #33 by Kurt Busiek & Mark Bagley.

JLA/Avengers and Avengers/JLA
I'm keeping track of the comics I’m reading this year here. Hope you’re digging it.
When one talks of the great comic book creators, George Perez will always be mentioned and most often honored for his body of work. To be sure, Perez is a legendary collaborator on flagship titles for both DC and Marvel with a penchant for handling team books like no one else. (I particularly admire how he handles backgrounds but that’s me being geeky about comic art.)
Tumblr media
His run on Wonder Woman stands head and shoulders above all others. But perhaps it’s his collaboration with writer Kurt Busiek on the long-gestating, often stalled but finally realized JLA/Avengers book that dropped in 2003.
When he was dying of cancer, Marvel and DC finally agreed to reprint this with bonus material in order to honor him and help defray some of the costs of dying. Of course the printing sold out and it will be forever before it’s released again, if ever.
So when I was cleaning out my comics collection, I pulled this four issue series out to read for the first time since 2003ish.
The book was first proposed in 1979 with Gerry Conway plotting, Roy Thomas scripting, and Perez on art (he even drew some pages that were reprinted in one collection). When the two companies disagreed, the book was shelved but Perez maintained his contracts so that even if he was exclusive to one company or another, he would be free to draw this story. Every so often the crossover would be mentioned and everyone was always hopeful it would happen.
Finally, it did.
Tumblr media
Previous to JLA/Avengers, company crossovers were not in-continuity and that was okay (even though the Batman/Hulk event deserved to affect both timelines but that’s a digression for another time). In the right hands, these huge crossovers were effective stories (Batman/Hulk and the X-Men/Teen Titans are my faves) and more than just fun like the Superman/Spider-Man tales. This company crossover is the one to top them all.
Busiek brought his A-game to the project and Perez - who was meant to draw this story - delivered all the promises and more. It’s a terrific story with 48 pages each issue packed to bursting with action, power, and MasterClass-level storytelling from both. Starting with Arkon and ending with Metron, it's a series that definitely stays with you.
I will eventually hunt down the collections but for now I'm happy to have these four issues now easily accessible.
