Today, we take a moment to celebrate a historic milestone - the anniversary of South Africa legalizing same-sex marriage. 🇿🇦🏳️‍🌈 On this remarkable day, South Africa not only became the first country in Africa to recognize love in all its forms, but also set a precedent for human rights and equality across the globe. This day serves as a reminder of the progress we've made, and the work that still needs to be done. Let's continue to fight for love, acceptance, and equality for all. Today we celebrate love, human rights, and the beautiful rainbow nation of South Africa. 🌈❤️

Yesterday, here on tumblr, someone reached out to me, seeking help. And now I am here seeking yours. I don't care about your opinions and views. The matter of the fact is that everyone deserves to be treated as human beings, and they deserve the rights of human beings as we all do.
Right now, we have a violation of the LGBTQ+ community in Uganda after its government passed one of the harshest anti-gay laws, which includes punishment by death.
Here are two Al Jazeera articles on this:
1. Displaced twice: Gay Ugandans on the run face upheaval in Kenya
2. Ugandas anti lgbtq law causing wave of rights abuses activists say
Yesterday, @annoyingpaintertragedy (please take a look at their blog) reached out to me regarding this. They mentioned that many of Ugandas lgbtq civilians were forced to flee Uganda to neighboring Kenya. But situations are just as bad in Kenya. They spoke of the Kakuma refugee camps where they now live along with many other refugees.
I myself am just now learning of this. But if you have any information or links of organizations that may help regarding this situation, please send them to me or add them to the reblogs.

2. Thailand moves closer to legalising same-sex marriage
Tumblr media
“Under the law, it describes a marriage union as one between two individuals, rather than a man and a woman. It will give LGBTQ+ couples the ability to adopt, have equal access to marital tax savings, rights to property and the ability to decide medical treatment when their partner is incapacitated.”
3. Juvenile platypus found in NSW: a sign of breeding success
Tumblr media
“A baby platypus was discovered in the Royal National Park less than a year after 10 were reintroduced to the area, marking the end of a half-century local extinction. The Ivy Foundation is an LGBTQI+ organisation in Malawi. One of my really good friends from university, who is currently working in Malawi, has helped them set up a GoFundMe - they currently are struggling to pay rent for the safehouse they run in the Malawian capital of Lilongwe.
They do not need a huge amount of money - only the equivalent of €800 to cover the next three months, so any donations would be massively appreciated. Currently they are staffed by volunteers as they do not have the funds available to pay wages for their staff. Any extra money would go towards their programmes to try an improve the safety, security and economic status of LGBTQI people in the country. The economic situation in Malawi is already extremely difficult, having one of the world's lowest average incomes. It also has one of the highest percentages of people living with HIV/AIDS of any country in the world. For LGBTQI individuals in Malawi, the challenges are even worse – from being denied access to health services and education, to facing homelessness and societal ostracization, and in some case even criminal prosecution.
Even if you cannot donate please consider sharing this link to others who may be able to. Thanks!
EDIT: If you want to follow them you can find them on Facebook at https://m.facebook.com/people/Ivy-foundation/100076556454298/

Ugandan president signs anti-LGBTQ+ law with death penalty for same-sex acts | Global development | The Guardian
On 17 April, a court in the eastern town of Jinja denied bail to six people working for healthcare organisations who had been charged with “forming part of a criminal sexual network”. Ugandan police confirmed that it conducted forced anal examinations on the six and tested them for HIV.
At the risk of offending any Ugandan supporters of this bullshit who might be here on Tumblr, fuck you.

WORLD NEWS
Ukraine: Russia strikes Kyiv as Western leaders meet in Europe (AP)
“Russia shattered weeks of relative calm in the Ukrainian capital with long-range missiles fired toward Kyiv early Sunday, an apparent Kremlin show-of-force as Western leaders meet in Europe to strengthen their military and economic support of Ukraine.”
South Africa: At least 20 dead in club; cause not yet known (AP)
“South African police are investigating the deaths of at least 20 people at a nightclub in the coastal town of East London early Sunday. It is unclear what led to the deaths of the young people, who were reportedly attending a party to celebrate the end of winter school exams.”
Turkey: Arrests in Istanbul as LGBTQ marchers try to defy Pride ban (AP)
“Dozens of people were detained in central Istanbul after city authorities banned an LGBTQ Pride march, organizers said Sunday. Turkey’s largest city has banned the march since 2015, but large crowds nonetheless gather every year to mark the end of Pride Month. Organizers called the ban unlawful.”
US NEWS
Abortion Protests: Police at Arizona Capitol fire tear gas, disperse protesters (AP)
“Police fired tear gas to disperse abortion rights supporters demonstrating outside the Arizona Capitol Friday night, forcing lawmakers to huddle briefly in a basement inside the building as they rushed to complete their 2022 session. Thousands of protesters had gathered earlier on the Capitol grounds in Phoenix, divided into groups both supporting and condemning the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade.”
Pride: Parades march on with new urgency across US (AP)
“Pride parades kicked off in New York City and around the country Sunday with glittering confetti, cheering crowds, fluttering rainbow flags and newfound fears about losing freedoms won through decades of activism. The annual marches in New York, San Francisco, Chicago and elsewhere took place just two days after one conservative justice on the Supreme Court signaled, in a ruling on abortion, that the court should reconsider the right to same-sex marriage recognized in 2015.”
US Senate: As Senate-confirmed justices end Roe, how will voters react? (AP)
“The end of Roe v. Wade started in the Senate. It was the Senate Republican partnership with President Donald Trump to confirm conservative judges, and transform the federal judiciary, that paved the way for the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling to overturn the constitutional right to abortion. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell set the strategy in motion, engineering the Supreme Court’s makeover by blocking President Barack Obama’s 2016 nomination of then-Judge Merrick Garland and changing the Senate’s rules to easily confirm Trump’s picks.”

President Museveni’s passing of this bill will have deadly consequences: 20 years in prison for “promoting” homosexuality, the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality,” and seven years in prison for anyone using their premises for homosexual acts, are just some of the provisions in a bill that has already emboldened homophobes to commit hate crimes.
As well as an assault on our human rights, the bill is a serious public health threat that would decimate the HIV response. My community back home would be pushed to the shadows of society and fear – afraid of accessing services for fear of being reported.
