Wanted » Akila alias Shim'Tar

Akila ist eine mächtige Amazone und beste Freundin, Liebe und Rivalin von Artemis. Seitdem sie klein waren, haben beide ein hartes Training durchlebt um Shim’Tar zu werden. Obwohl Akila betont hatte, dass sie diese Rolle nicht haben wollte, wurde sie von den Göttern letztlich für diese Rolle erwählt. Als Shim’Tar ist Akila der Champion der Amazonen von Bana-Mighall und die Rechtmäßige Trägerin und Beschützerin des Bogens von Ra, einer mächtigen Waffe der Ägyptischen Götter. Die Rolle der Shim’Tar trieb aber auch einen Keil zwischen ihre Freundschaft mit Artemis und die beiden drifteten voneinander ab. Nachdem Artemis Bana-Mighdall verließ um ihren eigenen Weg einzuschlagen blieb Akila in ihrer Heimat und gab ihr möglichstes diese zu schützen, auch wenn sie die Rolle der Shim’Tar noch immer hinterfragte.

I guess in the same vein in my Nubia post, let's also explore the shifting mythology of the Bana-Mighdall Amazons. They're primarily know as the Egyptian Amazons, but that's not really the whole picture.

The Bana-Mighdall were split offs from Theymscira who were said to be nomads for a long time before settling in Egypt. And post-crisis actually does a decent job of showing that actually.

When Artemis dies she specifically asks for a coin for the ferryman showing her Greek routes.

When building New Bana-Mighdall their worship centers are referred to as mosques, not temples. A notably Islamic structure.

And in some issues Mammitu a Summerian/Babylonian goddess is shown among the goddess of Bana-Mighdall. Showing they don't worship just Egyptian goddess.

When I first read this I thought it was just DC not keeping track of the fine details again. But at least Mammitu is on purpose her being from a different pantheon being referenced in the text. And when combined with the other details, purposeful or not, I think it builds a surprisingly realistic picture about how their origins and nomadic years would have a continuous influence on their modern culture.

And it's a shame Rebirth got rid of that.

Rebirth made the odd decision to move Bana-Mighdall from Egypt to Qurac. Probably Jason's fault, thanks Lobdell. And yet somehow despite Qurac being the fiction stand in for Iraq Bana-Mighdall is more firmly Egyptian than ever.

The term mosque is gone

Akila was mummified, so they're not following Greek burial traditions anymore

And Mammitu has been removed in favor of the the very male Ra.

Not all of the changes are bad. They actually chose to refer to Isis as her older more Egyptian name Aset which is cool. But I do think in certain ways the Rebirth Bana-Mighdall seems flatter than pre-flashpoint.
