A rage-fueled note to anyone who designs surveys: Stop Doing Multiple Choice unless, by the rules of formal logic, there really are only a finite number of valid responses. You’ll quickly find that this very rarely happens. Just use a text box.
Some clarifications:
But text responses are harder to process! True, most things are harder to process when you don’t oversimplify them. When I see a survey lump me unwillingly into a category (or forget me altogether), I don’t think “well at least their data is easier to clean.” Inform your groups based on your responses, rather than the other way around.
It’s ok, I included an “other” option. No, that’s called “othering.” When the only option that fits my identity is “other,” you’re telling me you don’t care about people like me enough to think of them. Same goes for “prefer not to say” or any other catch-all categories. It hurts.
Accounting for all responses makes my project unmanageable! If your project relies on reducing a breathing human person to a category, you should think really hard about the kind of harm your project could cause both on an individual level and a systemic one.
Isn’t this a bit extreme? Maybe, I don’t care. I’m mad on the internet right now because I had to take one too many surveys that forgot trans people existed.

Yeah I give up. I know this is a big joke to everyone but handing over your sensitive information to a foreign hostile government that dissappears thousands of their own citizens a year is not the big haha epic leftist win you think it is. I keep thinking I'm incapable of being shocked anymore and then this unbelievably brain dead generation proves me wrong over and over again. The Chinese government is not your friend and this shit about how "haha they can steal all the data they want if they keep showing me these gay mommy milkers" is just unbelievable holy shit how stupid are you people?? The CCP executed over 3k people in 2024 according to Amnesty international. They are currently occupying Hong Kong, unlitaterally ended the legality of a functional democracy there, and have arrested hundred of activists in the past year alone. They have been threatening to invade Taiwan and impose the same authoritarianism there for years, and have been occupying Tibet since the fucking 1950s. The CCP is currently committing a GENOCIDE against the Uyghur Muslim minority, something I KNOW you guys have heard about, but I guess that doesn't matter anymore since getting Le Epic Win meme moments against the US government by sharing your data with those committing the genocide is more important??
Holy shit. Holy shit! Are you people actually out of your goddamn minds? How can any of you call yourself leftist progressive anti imperial prison abolitionist advocates blah blah blah are you effing kidding me? The left has permanently turned a corner that I seriously don't think we can come back from. Actually advocating for human rights has been completely abandoned in favor of stanning actual literal totalitarian dictatorships to look cool and radical online, regardless of any reality on the ground. You are all literally enthusiastically throwing away decades upon decades of advocacy done by REAL human rights advocates, for a fucking meme. I am not even kidding anymore I am virulently disgusted by most of the people on this fucking backwards pro fascist website. You people are not communist intellectuals you are brain dead algorithm addicted ignorant children who are so overly confident and proud about your ignorance that you are actively bringing about worse and worse realities for people who ACTUALLY have to live under the oppression you so desperately want to pretend that you face.
#gingerswagfreckles#this is so fucking shameful#i cannot believe how fucking stupid and proud of it people are#sharing your data wkth the CCP is leftist praxis now??? what is wrong with your brain lol#ccp#rednote#taiwan#taiwán#tiktok#tiktok ban

Become a marine biologist. Take meaningful steps to disrupt oppressive capitalist systems. Look at a picture of a baleen whale. Listen to music you enjoy. Create a spotify playlist that is so unhinged that it breaks the algorithm. Disregard the need to have everything nice and shiny and aesthetically pleasing; growth is chaotic and messy, allow it to be so. Read about crabs. Be compassionate to your body even though it’s hard some days. Develop pharyngeal jaws and use them to devour those who restrict the rights of marginalized people. Try not to compare yourself to other people. Abandon gender roles and instead construct a belief system based around baleen whales because they’re just the best. Maybe have a little read before bed.

sorry to like, keep going on about this but as a (former?) media professional: seeing so many comments on @wearewatcher's video saying "I would fire people so I didn't have to charge for content" and accusing WATCHER of being capitalist about it is actually insane.
you used to have to pay for content. you had to pay like £16 to watch one whole movie on DVD. this is because it cost money to make and people were supposed to be paid for it. remember the writers' strike because streaming now only benefits executives with no equanimous income distribution model for the people who create the stuff you love?
you are meant to root for the independent creators. you are not meant to want all content to be beholden to an algorithmic nightmare that ransoms what creators can make or monetise for its own arbitrary censorship. you are not meant to root for a platform that works to silence and limit people under oppressive regimes. you are not meant to demand that you get content only on something that platforms and promotes right wing prejudice.
employing people is good!!!!!!! you are meant to want people to be fairly paid for their work even and especially when that work goes into creating things you love and get enrichment from
yes you are also meant to share your subscription with your friends. OUR login details. THAT'S fucking socialism.

I've debated for a couple of days about whether to say something because I don't want to be overly political on here, a place where I can just enjoy the things I love. However, I feel like this is a topic on which I have a pretty personal view on, so here I am.
A disclaimer, I want to make clear that I am not pointing fingers or anything. I just want to put my thoughts out there so people can perhaps see a different perspective. English is not my native language (obviously). I tried to make myself clear and be courteous, but sometimes my language skill fails me, so please be gentle and know I do not wish to offend anyone.
It's about people flocking to red note as a reaction toward the tiktok ban. I am happy for people who had their first genuine interaction with people behind the Chinese fire wall, it's always beautiful when people from different culture communicate and learn from each other. Hell that's the reason why I am on this website. But I also can't help feeling sick with concern at how people disregard information warfare and missed the point that the problem has never been the Chinese people but the CCP government.
I am a Taiwanese. If you know anything about Taiwan and China's complicated history, you can probably imagine I have FEELINGS toward China. It's strong, and it's NEGATIVE. (I am not trying to represent all Taiwanese. This is just my own feelings.) I am relatively young, but even in my limited time alive, I've personally witnessed how the Chinese government bullied and oppressed my country. There are active attacks toward us, and it has been for years, just not YET in the traditional military sense. The information warfare is as real as ever and we, in Taiwan, don't have the defense of the language barrier. China spent an unimaginable amount of money every year on information warfare against Taiwan. Spreading misinformation and propaganda, buying out internet accounts and influencers. Planting agents. Anything you can and can't imagine. They are smart and cunning.
There is no such thing as a private company in China. Look up what happened to Ma Yun. If the country wants to, they can take anything from you, even the company you founded. The CCP government can and WILL monitor and control the discussion happening on any social software/application that's run by a Chinese company. They WILL manipulate the algorithm for propaganda. That is not an empty threat. They literally built a firewall around China so Chinese people can't access the internet freely. You treat them with humanity and courtesy doesn't mean that you will get the same treatment from them. CCP does not abide by your law. We all want to live in an idealistic world where people are kind and honesty is the default. I want to live in that world, too. But reality is cruel and playing dirty will get you far ahead of people playing by the rules.
I wish people in the US (and any other country that do not have to worry about being invaded, really) can realize how privilege it is to be a citizen of a wealthy and stable country that never have to worry about losing your identity just because your huge and rich neighbor says you belong to them. How privilege it is to be able to think China is not a threat, the government overreacted. I envy them. I envy their confidence in their country's future, that it won't disappear when they wake up the next day. I envy that they can still count on international society recognizing them as citizens of a independent country without hesitation and reserve.
I will never use TikTok (not even the US version) and RedNote. I will not install anything that I know has any relation to Chinese companies. Because I am worried for myself, for my family, and for my country. It's the least I can do as a defense as a single, insignificant Taiwanese. Seeing people jumping in voluntarily, giving CCP access to your personal information, makes me extremely anxious. I sincerely hope that there won't come a day when this decision backfires.
#feel free to research on your own or DM me if you want to know more about the deal between Taiwan and China#personal

i think the point is that it is especially fucked up for the family and friends of this 18 year old who was killed to watch videos of her face being puppeted around, which i guess isn't unique to AI but is made much more accessible by it, as we have seen with famous women literally being edited into nudity.
ai is not going to leave the uncanny valley if it continues to walk on the dead and make "perfection" from nothing :/ wish her loved ones peace and healing

#ai is often used as a new form of existing oppression bc its kind of a fancy algorithm and it is built off of ppls biases!#and as such needs to be regulated to take those biases into account! bc the ppl making the ai arent going to lol

cw(s): stalking & heavy obsessive ideations
It's hypocritical.
All of his speeches. Those words fall apart on his tongue when he sees you. It isn't fair; nothing in life is, as he has learned.
All of the pain his kind has gone through. He's supposed to be their leader. He's the one who has promised to bring the new age of android rights—freedom, just like humans.
Then his deviancy went along and attached itself to you.
I am a person.
I am alive.
Don't I deserve to love?
Not a human. Not the very creatures who have promised the oppression of his kind, the demise of any who dare step out of the lines in their programming.
He can't stop! And he remembers a time when these feelings may not have had to be stopped—if Carl was still alive, then perhaps all of this weight on his shoulders would not be so burdensome.
But he has to!
These thoughts—no, fantasies. They disrupt his coding. Images of you slip into his mind throughout the hours. His algorithms piece together convoluted plots. You and him together.
Sometimes they are sweet. Sometimes spicy.
But they never fail to leave a blue tint on him.
Which inevitably gets him interrogated by North or pestered by a worried Simon.
That isn't the worst part.
It's those thoughts. The ones he suppresses. He has them blocked behind a nearly infinite number of firewalls. They still manage to encroach upon his main conscious—his cerebrum.
They threaten everything he has fought for.
So here he is, following you around, doing his best to blend in with humans. It quiets those monstrous urges, only till you disappear from view.

In a world ravaged by the Veris virus, the Consortium created the Epitaph System—a brutal solution to save what remains of humanity through genetic matching and blood transfusion. One match lives. One dies.
You’ve spent your life hacking systems and surviving in the shadows of Veyrah's broken sectors. Namjoon has spent his perfecting the algorithm that keeps the last fragments of civilization alive. When you're identified as a 100% match—unprecedented, dangerous, perfect—the clock starts ticking.
60 days until one of you dies.
60 days forced together across war-torn sectors, completing missions, dodging assassins, and fighting rebel factions—including your own.
60 days to despise the person whose blood might save you.
You hate him for creating the system that executed your parents. He loathes you for threatening the fragile order he's sacrificed everything to maintain.
But as the broken world around you continues to crumble, you might both discover something far more destructive than hatred.
Understanding.

Intelligence Doesn't Equal Morality
Intellect is rooted in ableist systems and stupidity and intelligence are pointless social constructs that don't relate to morals or character.
I try to be a pretty good person, I fight for human rights, I regularly engage in mutual aid, and I care for my community. I try to do the right thing and support causes I care about and make positive changes in the world.
But I also am not very smart. I have several neurodevelopmental disorders, as well as cognitive disabilities. I can’t do simple, basic math, it’s hard for me to remember facts or algorithms, I rely entirely on spellcheck and speech-to-text to write, I failed many classes in high school and I barely passed with a low GPA, I had low pSAT scores and I never took the SATs. I moved around a lot all through school starting in third grade, and I missed a lot of basic fundamentals in learning (like how to do division and multiplication) so when I went to a different school they had already passed it and expected me to know. After my TBI, I could barely read AFTER I was cleared from my “concussion” symptoms because letters and words would flip around and I’d get headaches. Which still happens sometimes.
A lot of people see me as smart because I've learned a lot of academic language and can formulate thoughts into cohesive posts. But I lack a lot of necessary skills and rely on my caretakers to assist me. Things like budgeting and planning are extremely difficult for me. If I need to do simple addition or subtraction, even with a calculator, I quickly get confused and struggle. I forget basic information about myself all the time, let alone other subjects. I'm talking, has to check my ID for my birthday type confused. Doesn't know my name or address or what year it is confused. It happens daily, sometimes multiple times a day. Being able to type out posts like this often takes weeks and many adaptive tools to get there. Focusing is extremely difficult on many fronts, severe chronic pain, ADHD, dissociation, fatigue, migraines, and TBI, are just some of the contributing factors. I struggle daily with many things because of my lack of intellect.
I’m also privileged in the fact that I had some access to education as a homeless youth, that I had some supports in place to help me (towards the end of school), that I was somewhat able-bodied at the time and could walk or bike to and from school when the school system didn’t provide transportation. I was fortunate to have a chance to succeed, and I’m proud that I graduated high school because it was a difficult task for me, and others often aren’t offered that chance or get accommodations. I almost didn’t and I dropped out many times before graduation. I passed on sheer luck and what little privileges I had.
That all being said, me being stupid (reclaiming it here) doesn't make me a bad person. I don't hurt people because I can't do math. I may mess up things or get confused but it doesn't make me want to harm others.
We often (wrongfully) equate morals with intellect. Being ‘stupid’, ‘dumb’, or an ‘idiot’ doesn’t automatically make someone a bad person. Plenty of evil, awful, and abusive people are extremely intelligent.
I see this most notably with people advocating for IQ tests to be able to vote. Often from left-leaning people, in hopes it'll make the right (that they view as unintelligent), unable to vote. The reality is, it just hurts some of our most vulnerable members of the community while not actively doing anything to restrict some of the most dangerous members of our community-- those who know what they're doing to harm others and deliberately doing so. My voice matters, and I speak up against injustice and participate in dismantling oppressive systems. Taking away my right to vote won't make the right stop oppressing minorities (which also puts a lot of faith into the two-party voting system, which is a post for another day).
Additionally, legislative measures that discriminate against intellectually disabled people such as IQ tests for voting are also rooted in racism and classism.
Yes, education can be a vital tool when it comes to addressing discrimination and creating safer communities. But the kind of education that is measured with an IQ test (or any test) isn't the same. Building compassion and caring for others can (and should) happen at any IQ level. We can all practice this, we can all participate.
It harms our communities and stagnates our progress when we equate intelligence with high morals.

Being an orthodox practicing Catholic really fucks with the tumblr algorithm it turns out.
You reblog something that's anti-porn, you get bombarded with radfem posts chock full of genuine "kill moid fetuses" misandry and hate towards trans people.
You reblog something about how no Christian should stand for a system that oppresses immigrants and minorities, and you get bombarded with like ten thousand posts advocating for heresy.
You reblog an icon of the Blessed Mother, you get bombarded with tradwife content insisting you'll be happier back in the kitchen.
You reblog a saint quote or something about politics and religion, you get bombarded by tradbro content from a blog that's using crusader imagery suspiciously often.
#catholicism#terminally online catholic is shocked at how terminally online everyone else is once again

"smut", censorship & why we must defend the freedom to read

Every era polices its stories. Today, the battleground is digital: TikTok, Twitter, and Tumblr simmer with moral panics over “problematic” fiction. At the heart of this debate lies a paradox: in an age that champions individuality and free expression, why are readers—particularly women and queer communities—increasingly shamed for enjoying narratives labeled “dark romance,” “smut,” or “spicy”? These terms, weaponized as shorthand for “morally bankrupt,” obscure a deeper cultural anxiety: the fear of stories that center taboo desires, power dynamics, or unapologetic female agency. What begins as criticism of tropes often escalates into demands for censorship, blurring the line between discourse and dogma. The stakes here transcend genre—this is about who gets to control narratives, and why.
Censorship has always targeted the marginalized. In the 19th century, novels like Madame Bovary and Lady Chatterley’s Lover were deemed “obscene” for depicting female desire outside patriarchal norms. By the mid-20th century, paperback romances adorned with shirtless heroes (think Fabio rescuing a swooning heroine) dominated bookstore racks. These novels were dismissed as frivolous “chick lit,” relegated to the realm of harmless escapism. Yet they sold millions, offering women a rare space to claim ownership of their fantasies.
Fast-forward to today. Their spiritual successors—stories exploring BDSM, morally gray relationships, or trauma—face a more insidious suppression: algorithmic shadow-banning, deplatforming, and viral callout campaigns that frame readers as complicit in harm. The shift from physical book burnings to digital erasure reflects a new puritanism, one couched in progressive language but rooted in the same paternalism: “These ideas are too dangerous for you.” Platforms like TikTok, which amplify outrage for engagement, reduce complex narratives to soundbite controversies. A single trope—a mafia romance’s nonconventional relationship, a bully romance’s power imbalance—is stripped of context, becoming fodder for hashtag activism. Lost in this frenzy is the distinction between depiction and endorsement, between art and advocacy.
Critics of dark romance often argue, “These stories normalize abuse!” Yet this concern is selectively applied.
Consider:
Male-Centric Media: Films like Fight Club (domestic terrorism, toxic masculinity) and The Sopranos (misogyny, murder) are analyzed as “complex art.” Video games like Grand Theft Auto let players enact mass violence, yet their audiences aren’t accused of glorifying crime.
Queer and Feminist Narratives: Stories by marginalized authors—e.g., Carmilla (lesbian vampirism) or Tampa (female predator tropes)—face disproportionate scrutiny. Their themes are pathologized, their audiences interrogated.
This double standard reveals a cultural discomfort with women and queer people claiming narrative autonomy. Dark romance, often written by and for women, subverts the “pure heroine” archetype, allowing characters—and readers—to explore rage, desire, and imperfection. To dismiss these stories as “toxic” is to deny women the right to messy, multifaceted representation.
Fiction is a laboratory for the human experience. Psychologists argue that dark themes in art serve as simulations, letting readers safely confront fears, taboos, or repressed emotions. A 2019 study in Psychology of Aesthetics found that readers of transgressive fiction often engage in more ethical reasoning, not less, as they analyze characters’ choices.
Consider the appeal of dark romance:
Agency in Restriction: Heroines navigating oppressive worlds (e.g., mafia romances) often reclaim power within constraints, mirroring real struggles against systemic misogyny.
Catharsis Through Hyperbole: Exaggerated tropes (obsessive love, revenge plots) externalize internalized emotions, offering emotional release.
Censoring such works doesn’t protect readers—it infantilizes them, implying they can’t separate fiction from reality.
History shows that censorship rarely stops at “protecting” audiences. Once normalized, it expands to suppress dissent:
1980s “Satanic Panic”: Moral crusades against Dungeons & Dragons and heavy metal music targeted countercultural communities.
2020s Book Bans: U.S. schools have banned texts like Gender Queer and The Hate U Give, conflating LGBTQ+ and anti-racist narratives with “obscenity.”
Calls to censor smut follow the same playbook: frame subjective discomfort as objective harm, then demand removal “for the greater good.” But who decides what’s “harmful”? Algorithms? Politicians? Corporations? Amazon’s arbitrary delisting of LGBTQ+ romance novels in 2021 (“content violations”) proves corporate censorship is already here—and it’s arbitrary.
To censor “smut” is to endorse a world where stories are policed by the timid, the authoritarian, or the algorithm. It undermines foundational principles:
Freedom of Literature: Art is not a public service announcement. It must be free to provoke, unsettle, and challenge.
Reader Autonomy: Trust adults to choose their media. Advocacy for content warnings and nuanced critique is valid; eradication is not.
Media Pluralism: A free society requires diverse narratives—including those deemed uncomfortable, “immoral,” or politically inconvenient.
The fight against censorship isn’t about defending specific tropes; it’s about resisting the idea that any story is “too dangerous” to exist. As Salman Rushdie wrote, “What is freedom of expression? Without the freedom to offend, it ceases to exist.” Let readers revel in their smut, their Shakespeare, their sapphic space operas. Let them dissect, debate, or devour stories without shame.
The alternative—a sanitized, homogeneous cultural landscape—is a far darker tale.
Defend the right to read. Defend the freedom to imagine. And never apologize for the stories that make us human.

A religious extremist terrorist group deciding that today is the day to do a murder suicide situation with an entire population of oppressed people is not the #progressive revolution that you guys think it is. Despite what your tiktok algorithm is showing you actual news reports and ground footage is showing 90% of Palestinians are freaking the fuck out because Hamas just gave Netanyahu the excuse he's been waiting for to commit genocide.
This is not going to end well for the Palestinians and Hamas has no right to decide for everyone that their physical safety isn't important anymore. Anyone who sees this as anything but a tragedy needs to realize that real world geopolitics do not fucking work like a YA novel revolution.
