Knock At The Cabin [Flip Flopped version]

Written for @munson-blurbs and @corroded-hellfire’s excellent Flip Flopped summer writing event, challenging writers to explore what might’ve happened to their story if a plot point had taken a different direction.

WC: ~1k

CW: Not much in this part, but overall the series is 18+ so minors DNI. Post-S4, dark themes, hurt/no comfort, canon-typical distressing images, canon-typical brandishing of weapons but no actual violence, mentions of someone vomiting but it’s not described.

Summary and A/N: Thanks so much to Bug and Red for creating this event! I decided to revisit Knock At The Cabin, and see how Part One might have played out if the gang had a very different reaction to their surprise visitor.

There, hunched, shivering, soaked and covered in mud, is your friend. The one who’d died saving the town. The one they’d buried only a few days ago, after he’d been lying on a slab in a lab somewhere for weeks.

Eddie.

The increasingly noisy wind blows leaves and rain horizontally across the stoop. Inside the hallway, there’s silence. You all crowd at the door, mouths agape, and initially, none of you move.

You take in your visitor’s appearance. His hair is lank, wet, muddy and full of twigs and leaves. He stands, shoulders sagging, in filthy, soaking clothes, the wet material dragging his frame down further. He’s barefoot, his feet muddy and bloody.

His cheeks are gaunt, his lips grey, not the plush, rosy pink that they once were. He looks thinner than you remember, and his skin was always pale, but it seems lighter now, almost translucent.

Eddie finally lifts his eyes to you all. They’re sunken, red-rimmed, and have lost their usual sparkle.

None of you consider what events or twists of fate might have brought Eddie to you, only caring in this moment that he’s here, standing in front of you. He should be dead, but somehow he's here!

Dustin shoulders his way between you and Steve and takes his first good look at the strange visitor. At first he’s confused, incredulous, but this rapidly gives way to pure terror, as he lets out a high pitched screech over the sound of the rain. He abruptly turns on the spot and runs down the hallway, yelling,

“Zombie? ZOMBIE!”

Robin screams, hands coming to cover her mouth as she backs away from the doorway a couple of paces.

Steve reacts defensively, raising his nail bat as he steps outside, placing himself between Eddie and the party. Lucas takes Steve’s lead and grabs an old walking stick from a stand by the door, moving to join him and brandishing it like a weapon.

Steve yells towards Eddie over the noise of the rain,

“What are you? One of Vecna’s foot soldiers?”

Lucas continues, jabbing the stick at the air in front of him,

“A demon? A lab-grown demogorgon? Get back!”

Will is swaying, rubbing at the nape of his neck. Robin and Jane try to comfort him, the three of them clinging to each other in tears.

You hear quick footsteps behind you and glance back to see Mike rushing to the kitchen, followed by the distinctive sound of someone throwing up.

Steve spreads one arm out and signals for Lucas to get behind him, hustling him back through the opening, slowly retreating as he yells over his shoulder,

“Everyone get inside. Now!”

You watch as Eddie stumbles backwards, eventually stepping off the stoop.

You seem to be the only one who’s concerned rather than terrified. You try to shoulder your way through them all to get outside, see Eddie properly, but the movement of their combined retreating bodies pushes you back into the hallway, and you’re unable to get a proper look at him, let alone go out to him.

As soon as everyone’s inside Steve slams the door, locking and bolting it and scanning for something heavy to brace it with.

Without looking around, he barks,

“Robin, get the satellite phone.”

Robin, wide-eyed, stammers,

“B-but we’re only supposed to use that in an emergency.”

Steve continues, his voice becoming more high-pitched,

“Well, I’d say that someone coming back from the dead qualifies as a fucking emergency, wouldn’t you? Call Owens. Now!”

Everyone scatters into the cabin. Robin tries to find the equipment Owens gave you when you moved here. Will and Jane comfort each other on the sofa and Jane wraps a blanket around her friend's shoulders. Lucas and Steve find bookcases and tables to put against various windows and doors. Dustin sits rocking near the back door, holding his knees to his chest, whilst Mike cleans himself up in the kitchen.

You’re the only one who moves to the living room window to look upon your friend.

He raises his head, initially simply staring at the closed door with a blank, stunned expression.

You place a palm against the glass, feeling like it’ll get you closer to him somehow. It’s enough to draw his attention, and as your eyes connect his brows draw up and you see a look of rejection and fear pass across his features.

You breathe his name quietly against the glass, and it fogs up a little.

His expression briefly turns to sadness, before he drops your gaze and runs a hand down his filthy cheek. Shuffling backwards for a few steps, he turns and shambles off into the rainy night.

He takes a few longer steps before pausing to look over his shoulder at the door again, and that defeated expression turns into a scowl as his brows furrow and his lips slowly curl up into a snarl. The softness in his eyes is completely gone, and is replaced with a steely black glare.

He turns away then, and you see him break into a jog. He’s bouncing his shoulders and flinging his hands out to the sides as if he’s building himself up for something.

He runs so far down the lane he almost reaches the highway. You nearly lose sight of him, and he appears only as a dark silhouette.

Suddenly the shape shortens as he drops to his knees, raising his face to the swirling grey sky and spreading his arms wide as brief flashes of lightning begin to light up the clouds.

The wind buffeting the trees increases, and starts to send larger branches, twigs and more leaves to smack against the roof and windows of the cabin

It’s almost enough to drown out the inhuman bellow Eddie emits.

But you hear it…

i feel like ppl who don't like the remaster bcuz they feel like it mischaracterizes their fave or removed their favorite story moment or joke are forgetting that the remaster isn't like..... canon?? it isn't replacing that actually happened. the original is still canon to the rest of the show. oj is still an asshole paintbrush and lightbulb still never interacted until season two!!! that's the actual canon of the show!!!! im not sure what the in-universe explanation for the remaster is but i do know it isn't going to replace the original so if you dont like how the remaster does something rest assured your interpretation is Objectively the correct one in terms of how characters/their actions will impact the story "going forward" <3 and mephone4s still likes hello kitty

In the midst of a wip where Amity Park goes kablooey because the GIW once again tried to blow up the Ghost Zone, but that backfired (literally) so very badly that the explosion took out half of Illinois.

Danny survives but was stuck in his core for a fat minute, and when he gets out he immediately goes on the hunt for Dani in the hopes that at least she survived too. Without any gear, he just follows his gut (core) instinct and winds up in Gotham, only to find out that Dani was caught by Ghost Hunters and destabilized entirely.

Danny, who was avoiding going ghost just knowing how dangerous he is, does not react well to this.

Enter Batman, who's trying to find out why over half of Gotham suddenly experienced a mass blackout.

But this isn't your Bruce Wayne Batman,

It's Thomas Wayne.

the multiverse actually should be the most funky comic bullshit of all but when you try to categorize it so much and assign them all numbers and tie the idea of the multiverse into the concept of revitalizing the company brand the whole thing dies a long fifty year death which has to culminate in an adaptation of hickman’s secret wars that no one left on this planet cares about while referencing the original secret wars which is the sell out toy commercial comic event of all time. whereas the platonic form of the superhero comic multiverse is actually when alex summers’ soul does interdimensional spirit travel and spends years of real publishing time in a parallel world married to his brothers dead wife who brainwashed him and then fights dracula with the omniversal power of all realities.

I keep thinking about a parallel universe where, after vander dies and vi is taken to jail, silco as a last favor to his old sister in weapons decides to spare little powder's life but is not interested in taking her with, so she just stays there in the rubble and fire surrounded by the bodies of her family. Vi is not coming back for her, no one is coming back for her and she just waits for life to take her away like it did with her family.

Simultaneously, just a couple blocks away a couple young investors who just got the green light to start working on hextech find themselves looking to purchase more material for their endeavor when they hear the blast and come rushing close. By the time they arrive everyone is gone except for a crying blue hair girl from the undercity, viktor approaches without hesitation, the empathy he feels for the girl blinds his good judgement as jayce stands close by just in case.

After some back and forth viktor sets his foot and takes little powder with them back to the academy, explaining that to the guards was definitely fun for jayce while viktor only cared about getting her out of the cold and comforting her, she clung to him like a second skin and wasn't letting go, reluctantly she allowed jayce to carry her back to piltover once her weight was too much for viktor's cane to hold them both, but she didn't left viktor's side the entire night.

It took viktor several days to get a word out of her but eventually, after opening up to her about being from the undercity too, he found out her name was powder and she was an orphan, he couldn't get much more out of her without triggering some very strong emotions he didn't know how to handle, but that was enough info. She was an orphan and she didn't have a place to go.

Jayce of course felt pity for the girl, he emphasized with losing a parents, he really did, but he couldn't help but have second thoughts about the whole situation, he suggested taking her to an orphanage downtown which viktor shut down real quick, he was as clung to the girl as she was to him and jayce had to deal with it because he was also clung to viktor.

What started as a kind gesture of trying to help a little girl in need turned into something more permanent in the blink of an eye, suddenly 7 years had passed since that fire in the docks because now little powder was a young lady, long blue braid and a face permanently stained with grease as she spent her days working at the lab with viktor and jayce in whatever new project they needed her help with while at the same thing working on her own stuff on the side.

With powder's innate talent for engineering hextech's advanced double as fast and now viktor and jayce were working on projects at a much bigger scale than they ever envisioned, powder lost interest in hextech a while ago but goes along with it to help her dads.

Neither viktor nor jayce ever thought about having children, they were both so focused on their career that becoming dad's one night was definitely something they had to adjust their lives around, specially to a child with as much baggage a powder but they quickly grew to love her and it made their bond stronger, now they had something else in common other than hextech, they were a small family.

Of course powder was closer to viktor most of the time, he just seems to get her in ways jayce didn't and after he got into the council a part of powder resented him a little but at the end of the day when it was just the three of them on the lab working the world just felt like it was in order. Everything that had to do with vi and vander was left in the past, powder chose to focus on the good life she had in piltover as one of the creators of hextech, deep down it brought her comfort to know that's the life vi wanted her to have, one where she didn't have to worry about her next meal or having a roof over her head at night. Yeah she was different from everyone else in piltover and she always got dirty looks here and there, but she was content and she was thriving.

Until the day she finds out about a pink haired girl locked away in the stillwater prison that recently got released to help a young inforcerer work on a case related to the shimmer problem in the undercity. Now she has to choose either to stick to the life she's made for herself in piltover, or leave it wall behind to go chase a ghost in the undercity.

It's a whole mess of a plotline but I really like to think there's a world where powder got to live up to her potential with loving dads / mentors that didn't feed into her more dangerous traits, I believe ví would've loved to see her thriving in piltover even if it was under the thought that ví left her there that night.

what do you think of that theory that Alastor is also an infesting/infestor demon? people say that after the new ep, Alastor and envy demon Ronaldo have some characteristics in common. like, feeds off misery, disappears in a oozing shadow, green power association and stuff. and somehow this seems connected to the theory that the Von eldritch family somehow own alastor's soul. because theyre also envy demons, and, more precisely, actually friends of the morningstar family (lucifer

Oooh - this is actually the first I've heard of this theory, but I can definitely see where people are making the connections. I don't think Alastor is an infestor demon himself because while he is emotionally manipulative, sadistic, and quite canny at reading people, it seems that is more his delightfully horrid personality rather than any preternatural advantage. Also, his actual approach to eliminating his targets is, uh, brutal and overwhelming violence, not luring people into traps and supernaturally feeding off of their misery. I think there's probably a lot of sadism and shadowy-ness going around hell in general. He also doesn't have any fishy themeing whatsoever!

But I think it would be really neat if he did have connections to the Von Eldritch family. He does have a pretty pronounced negative reaction the moment he realizes Lucifer is coming to the hotel, prior to ever meeting him, even though Lucifer himself isn't familiar with who Alastor is. Alastor's opinion could be based on reputation, but it would be fun if the real reason for his reaction was that the Von Eldritches were the ones who got their claws into his soul! And it would certainly entangle him in the Morningstar family business. Perhaps in a deeply nefarious way...

But it would also be fuckoff hilarious if it was literally just because they were trying to set their kid up with his ex-girlfriend.

Question about NG+ & Report Card Wishlist

Is there ever an opportunity to spend time with Eito in NG+ in order to unlock hints for his report card wishlist?

I, uh, did not really spend much time with him in Route 0 because Math felt like the least useful stat, and In 2nd Scenario it’s possible to gift him things but not spend time with him

I could probably guess my way through since I filled out most of the other report card gifts already (barring characters not available in 2nd Scenario) but I was curious if there are routes/free days where I could just spend time with him normally ^^”

I think I should focus more on the link between Rafal and Japeth in TCY because I was typing out a joke post that went something along the lines of "TCY is so funny because the whole division between the two Pens comes down to "omnipotent omniscient harbinger of fate" vs "some snake guy" under the assumption that the scim that was Lionsmane was just one of Japeth's, but I realised I didn't have a source for that so checked flesh and blood again and what do you know Lionsmane is apparently "made out of my father (Rafal's) spirit.". I was aware of the reference to 'Rafal's spirit' mostly because it's a concept never mentioned by name again in the series but somehow never noticed that Lionsmane WAS just. Rafal. which has horrible consequences for the Japeth Lore

Basically. It seems very important to me that the "Storian VS Lionsmane" duo can be boiled down to "Fate VS Japeth", given that a lot of Japeth's motivation comes from his desire to be able to control fate, stating in Flesh And Blood "soon I'll be fate's master, with the power to take love back (where he's talking about Aric)." . Saying that he IS Lionsmane ties into that nicely, given that he'll write his own fate with the pen that Is Him. This also fits into the "Past is Present" prophecy, given the last line of "Until you change it", being exactly what Japeth aims to do.

However, Japeth does not 'change it', because he's not the one writing his fate, because He's Not Lionsmane. RAFAL is. The fate that Japeth thinks he's creating for himself isn't the one he wants, but is Rafal's fate instead... which is exactly what ends up happening to him, given the second fratricide incident. This also works with Past is Present, because Past IS Present, given it's the same fate. Which also works as a lovely little reminder that Japeth has absolutely no control over his fate in the slightest, reflected by a few other pieces of book 6 information: Rafal's message to him (that happens before book 4) instructs him to remain loyal to his brother, and to always put his brother first. He doesn't win a single one of Arthur's Trials. It is literally stated by Rafal in a flashback that it was LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE for japeth to end up being One True King. what I am Trying To Say is that there was absolutely no way in hell Japeth could ever have "changed it", ever. Anyway because of all of this I firmly believe that Soman should've put at least a couple of vague references to the TCY twins in the prequels given that Japeth and Rafal might have the most interesting link between them in my opinion

Consider: The Incredibles AU where instead of the disappointing sequel, the Parr family's move after the first movie takes them to the neighbourhood of the Addams family shortly after Addams Family Values.

The families quickly become friends. Wednesday is thirteen at this point, only a year younger than Violet, based on her actor's age and the movies' timeline; Pugsley is about eleven, a year older than Dash; and Pubert is one like Jack-Jack. The Parrs discover the Addamses' supernatural abilities and (arguably correctly?) assume that they're also supers. As the Addamses are happy to go along with it and now feel solidarity with the oppressed supers, getting the anti-super laws overturned proves to be both much easier and much more fun thanks to their vast wealth, charisma and... altogether ookiness. Gomez and Morticia help the Parrs in adjusting to and accomodating Jack-Jack's developing powers. The newly traumatized Parr kids bond with kids and receive guidance from adults who take all the pain and life-threatening situations they've been through in stride and admire their strength of character. Everything works!

Before I went to see Deadpool and Wolverine I asked my girlfriend (who had already seen it) what she thought of it. She said it was “good but suffered from being an mcu movie”. And I was like yeah that sounds right.

But now I get it. Because if it wasn’t an mcu movie the last scene would have been a graphic sex scene with Wade and Logan.

Big Mama’s Assistant with narrative They/Them pronouns (until the reveal) is my everything right now :D

Big Mama’s Assistant speaks with a stern and commanding voice, muffled slightly from the mask and making it harder to deduce whether Big Mama’s assistant is really a living being or the perfect robot. “You are the Hamatos?”

The question almost sounds judgemental rather than looking for confirmation. A hint of disbelief in Their tone like they aren’t what the Assistant thought they’d be.

spinning silver has an extremely rigid and vicious fantasy hierarchy involving the suicide of 'failed' servants similar to tge but unlike tge it also has the main character go 'this is incredibly fucked up oh my GOD' and even though the entire book and the entire pov is spent with maia, it feels like miryem's relationship with power is explored with actual nuance bc it's not presupposed she's Always Good and Right before she even steps into the room. even in this small scene it's better handled! she does screw up, she does misuse her new power, she does internally AND externally interrogate that. and even though her title is just as forced on her as maia's was, and even tho she's surrounded by (from her pov) literal monsters who kidnapped her, trap her, neglect her, and force her to use her wits every single day just to stay alive, she's WAY less of a whiner than maia was. 'wahhh my attendant's don't approve of me I'm such a victim' dude you are the literal MOST powerful person in the entire kingdom if you don't shut the fuck up....
