Dave is a time demon trying to get Karkat's soul as an assigned job by his boss, the ruler of Hell. But because Karkat has a weirdly strong protective amulet that he never takes off, he has to disguise himself as a human to try and gain enough of his trust to catch him in his most vulnerable state. He really doesn't want to, though, because he is the most insufferable person he has ever known.

Meanwhile Karkat is a college student trying to go through life at the same time as he is getting bothered by some weirdo who is coming to annoy him at the bar where he works at, how lovely. The universe seem's to conspire against him, as life gets weirder and weirder the more time passes, but at this point he is used to it.

so i keep getting this post on my feed about how people hate vriska because she's a girl or whatever blah blah blah this is old, but their phrasing was? interesting? they compared her to eridan and gamzee (as usual), so I'm gonna break it down real quick. they said gamzee is worse because he's a serial killer, and eridan is worse because he's a genocide apologist and a ""sexpest"" (good lord, that's a thirteen year old.) let's start with the comparison to gamzee, because girly, vriska is also a serial killer. that's a whole thing. not to mention gamzee was LITERALLY NOT OF SOUND MIND WHILE RAMPAGING. anyway, on to the eridan part. yes, eridan did attempt genocide, we get it. i literally cannot go five minutes on homestuck tumblr without seeing somebody complain about it. obviously, not a cool thing to do, but we can't just completely ignore the fact that vriska also killed people? like, at the scale we're working on, mass murder is mass murder. vriska isn't innocent of being weird about lowbloods, either, which brings us to our next topic. now, do i think it's right to call thirteen year olds sexpests?? no, obviously not, what the fuck. but if we're bringing that up, I'm not gonna shy away from mentioning that vriska sexually harassed tavros quite a few times in canon. concept explored, rant over. they're all bad people to a pretty strong degree (maybe gamzee less so than people make him out to be since, y'know, he was experiencing extreme symptoms of withdrawal), but they're all kids who grew up in a society that practically encouraged them to be that way. extra point, do i like eridan and gamzee more than i like vriska? yes. is that because i hate vriska, or think she's worse than them, or dislike trans women? absolutely not, that's a ludicrous accusation to jump to off of such minimal information. do i have my own unique feelings and opinions on characters that frequently change as i understand them better and are heavily influenced by outside factors as well as canon ones, which have nothing to do with prejudice or blindly following other people's malcontent? yes! I won't say that nobody hates vriska for baseless reasons, of course such a controversy-fueled fandom will breed some strange opinions, but "transmisogynistic murder apologist incapable of forming unique opinions" is a rather harsh label to attach to a mostly harmless preference.

no negativity intended towards the person who made the post I'm referencing, even if i came off a little harsh, although i do have them blocked because of how triggering that post was to me so I doubt they'll actually see this at any point.

So basically the entire deal with Henry IV Part 1 is that it's kind of this battle of the Henries, right? Henry Hotspur (Vriska allegory) is hotheaded, temperamental, obsessed with heroism and will kill as many men as will take to reach his goal and have his due part of the kingdom; Prince Henry (Terezi allegory), later to be Henry V, is the crown prince yet presents himself as a goofy reveler more than royalty

Except! That's part of his ploy! The entire thing is that Prince Hal is pretending to be this dumbass bastard because it's slowly gaining him allies. And when war does finally break out, he outshines his brother (prince John which, lol) and lo and behold- secretly, he's been a tactical genius this whole goddamn time

Add in the literal courtroom scenes (the play court, the real deal, literally all of Henry IV Part 2 is a courtroom drama) and the final climactic fight between Hal and Hotspur, and what do you get? Pre-retcon VrisRezi. Take a look.

i realised that i have a pedometer on my phone, so ive been recording my steps with how much ive been walking at work and i noticed my steps today at exactly the perfect time

so i’m re-reading homestuck. currently i’m near the beginning of act 5. assorted thoughts:

1. rose is so fucking funny. fanfic writers never remember this

2. speaking of rose — her classpect means that in fanart and fanfic, her mysterious seer-iness is highly emphasized. but in acts 1 through 4, the mysterious one is jade. DREAM VISIONS! ENIGMATIC HINTS AT PROPHECY! TIME LOOP BULLSHIT! jade is THE mysterious seer-adjacent character. meanwhile, rose acts like she knows what’s going on but she basically never does. as a result, fanfic especially gives the mysterious-seer attributes to rose and jade is just sort of… there. (i am kinda guilty of this myself.) my new 2024 slogan: let jade be enigmatic as fuck!

3. the first time vriska ever appears — unless you count her username appearing without being directly referenced, which happens pretty early — is at the very very edge of a panel, in which you can see one of her horns. that happens a few times pre-act-five, especially in panels that involve terezi. honestly most terezi conversations pre-act-five get funnier if you imagine vriska looking over her shoulder like ::::/ or like ::::D

4. the fandom image of karkat is highly positive. the idea of his character is kinda locked to karkat as he appears in act 6 (maybe late act 5?), and fan depictions of early karkat (pre-sgrub, or simply early act 5) seem to retrospectively plaster his later characterization onto his earlier self. his general assholery is interpreted as blunted grumpiness that no one really takes seriously. that interpretation more or less makes sense for later versions of his character, but it’s startling how genuinely mean he is in early act 5! he’s such a jerk that in a conversation with early act 5 vriska he comes off looking worse! that’s HARD. and a really interesting facet of his character!

As for Redglare, it would surprise me if I ever heard her name again. If she finds me then I welcome her challenge. 8ut I am so confident she will play no relevant role in my future, I won't even 8other peering into my oracle to satisfy my curiosity.

Scratch is fucking everywhere! He's hiding in every era, corrupting every plan, manipulating entire generations of trolls into serving his goals. I'd ask where this ends, but I already know it doesn't end - not until the universe does.

Looks like it's go time, then - but who’s the smart money really on?

Well, Gamzee won’t be able to intimidate Vriska as easily as his previous victims - and honestly, I think even Eridan is too lost in the sauce to fear him now. Our young Prince of Hope is probably the most vulnerable fighter, though, since losing his wand would render him powerless. I think he'll be the first to go down.

If I'm right, then this fight is really between Vriska and Gamzee. Cards on the table, who's taking that matchup?

Gamzee is strong, scary and durable, but I still think this comes down to maneuverability. If Vriska takes to the skies, melee combat is out, and - although we can't be sure about this - we didn't see any ranged weapons in Gamzee's Specibus. The best he has is probably Equius's bow, and I wouldn't count on him hitting a moving target before she can steal his luck. Even if he does have an effective ranged option, Vriska would still be a challenge to tag. She was astoundingly fast in Wake.

Yeah, I'm giving the advantage to Vriska here. Let's see how it goes!
