The moment Andrew put Neil's hand on his chest and Neil repeated Andrew's words back to him; "I won't be like them, and I won't let you let me be.", is such an important moment in their romance.

It's where Andrew starts really letting go. He gave Neil ground. And he didn't take it because he knew better than to accept the nonverbal permission. Giving ground doesn't mean it's ready to be taken. Andrew had always made his needs very clear, and his boundaries.

Neil took exactly what Andrew gave. No more. No less. A hand in the center of his chest. To an outsiders perspective it might not be very important but to Andrew it would've been everything.

It means he could fully trust Neil, as much as he is capable of. It's further proof that Neil wouldn't take advantage of him, push too hard, none of it. It means that for once this nothing didn't have to stay nothing. It could be something. Maybe not now, but in the future.

Andrew chews on the inside of his jaw for a moment before turning back to Neil. “Will you talk about the angel thing instead?”

“What about the angel thing?” Neil still looks sort of pouty about being called a mafia baby. But in Andrew's opinion it’s a good look for him.

“I don’t know. I just don’t understand it.”

“Understand what?” Neil asks, exasperated.

“Why I, of all people, got a guardian angel.” Andrew answers honestly. “It just seems wasteful, an angel just for me. Today was the first time I’ve been in danger since July and it wasn’t even real. Surely there’s someone out there who needs you more.”

Neil gives Andrew a long, searching look. One that sort of makes him feel naked. “You need me plenty.”

Andrew is offended at that. “I can handle myself.”

“I know you can,” Neil says. “But you still need me. Or I wouldn’t be here at all.”

“Why do I need you though? I’m not accident-prone and I am more than capable in a fight, against anyone but Renee. Hell, you should be looking after Kevin.” Andrew says with a huff. “At least that would give me a break.”

Neil snorts. “With everything Kevin’s been through, he must already have an angel. One that does their job properly.”

“Properly.” Andrew repeats.
